आरंभिक विचार (2) – पुराने नियम के प्ररूप

 

हमने इब्रानियों 6:1-2 में से तीसरी आरम्भिक बात, बपतिस्मों, पर विचार करते हुए, पिछले लेख में हमने देखा था कि बाइबल परमेश्वर का एकमात्र सत्य, अनन्तकालीन, अचूक, अपरिवर्तनीय वचन है जो सर्वदा के लिए स्वर्ग में स्थापित है; जो कभी भी समय, स्थान, या व्यक्ति के अनुसार बदलता नहीं है। इसलिए, इस तथ्य को बपतिस्मे के बारे में हमारे इस अध्ययन पर लागू करने के बाद हम समझ सकते हैं कि शब्द ‘बपतिस्मा’ या ‘बपतिस्मा लेने’ का जो अर्थ और अभिप्राय नए नियम के उन आरंभिक समय के लोगों के लिए रहा होगा जिन्होंने बपतिस्मा लिया था, वही उसका मूल, अपरिवर्तनीय अर्थ है जो हमेशा सभी स्थानों पर, सभी के लिए लागू है। कोई भी अन्य अर्थ या व्याख्या इस मूल अर्थ को और स्पष्ट कर सकती है, उसकी पुष्टि कर सकती है, किन्तु कभी भी उसे बदल नहीं सकती है, उसके स्थान पर कोई और अर्थ नहीं ला सकती है। इस संदर्भ में हमने दो बातों को आगे के विचार के लिए अपने सामने रखा था - पहली, क्या पुराना नियम बपतिस्मे के बारे में कुछ कहता है, और यदि कहता है तो क्या कहता है? दूसरी, क्यों किसी ने भी यूहन्ना बपतिस्मा देने वाले या प्रभु यीशु के शिष्यों पर कोई नई, पवित्र शास्त्र से बाहर की रीति आरंभ करने का दोष नहीं लगाया? ऐसा कैसे प्रतीत होता है कि सभी ‘बपतिस्मे’ से परिचित थे, और बिना किसी वाद विवाद के उसे स्वीकार कर लिया? ये दोनों बातें परस्पर संबंधित हैं, और हम आज इनके बारे में देखेंगे। 

हमें यह एहसास करने की आवश्यकता है कि यद्यपि पुराने नियम में बपतिस्मे का कोई उल्लेख नहीं है, परन्तु परमेश्वर द्वारा मूसा में होकर इस्राएलियों को दी गई व्यवस्था, अनुष्ठानों, और रीतियों में अनुष्ठान के अनुसार स्नान करना, शुद्ध होना, और स्वच्छ करना अत्यावश्यक तथा बहुत महत्वपूर्ण बातें थीं। प्रभु यीशु और फरीसियों से सम्बन्धित एक घटना (मत्ती 15:1-3) पर विचार कीजिए। इस घटना से हम देख और समझ सकते हैं कि फरीसी अपनी रीतियों के पालन के प्रति कितने कट्टर और निश्चित थे। फिर भी वे लोग यूहन्ना बपतिस्मा देने वाले के पास बपतिस्मा लेने के लिए गए (मत्ती 3:7), और उन्होंने कभी भी यूहन्ना बपतिस्मा देने वाले के द्वारा, या प्रभु यीशु अथवा उसके शिष्यों के द्वारा (यूहन्ना 4:1-2) बपतिस्मा दिए जाने के लिए कोई आपत्ति नहीं उठाई। यदि यूहन्ना बपतिस्मा देने वाले ने, या प्रभु यीशु और उसके शिष्यों ने कुछ नया आरंभ किया होता तो जो लोग भोजन से पहले हाथ धोने के लिए आपत्ति उठा सकते थे, वे इस बात के लिए निश्चय ही कहीं अधिक गंभीर और तीव्र प्रतिक्रिया देते। ये उदाहरण दिखते हैं कि चाहे पुराने नियम में ‘बपतिस्मा’ शब्द नहीं दिया गया है, किन्तु  फिर भी उन लोगों के लिए यह कोई नई बात नहीं थी; उस समय के यहूदी और उनके धार्मिक अगुवे उसे पहले से ही जानते थे और स्वीकार करते थे। व्यवस्था में वस्त्रों को धोने और स्नान करके रीति के अनुसार स्वच्छ होना कई परिस्थितियों में निर्धारित किया गया है, जैसे कि उनके लिए जो:

·      रीति के अनुसार अशुद्ध हों (लैव्यव्यवस्था 14:8-9)। 

·      जो शरीर के किसी रिसाव या प्रमेह के द्वारा अशुद्ध हों (लैव्यव्यवस्था 15:3-12)।

·     जो लहू या किसी मरे हुए पशु को खाने के कारण अशुद्ध हो गए हों (लैव्यव्यवस्था 17:15-16)।

·     जो किसी मरे हुए व्यक्ति, या मनुष्यों की अस्थियों, या कब्र को छूने के कारण अशुद्ध हो गए हों (गिनती 19:16-20)।

·    महायाजक, हारून पहला था, को महा-पवित्र स्थान में प्रवेश करने से पहले अपने आप को अनुष्ठान के अनुसार शुद्ध और स्वच्छ करना होता थी, उसके बाद ही वह मिलाप वाले तंबू के महा-पवित्र स्थान में प्रवेश कर सकता था (लैव्यव्यवस्था 16:23-28)।   

पुराने नियम में भविष्यद्वक्ताओं ने भी परमेश्वर को स्वीकार्य होने के लिए शुद्ध और स्वच्छ होने के लिए कहा है (यशायाह 1:16; ज़कर्याह 13:1)। और प्रभु यीशु ने भी इसी संकेत देते हुए पतरस से उसके पाँव धोने के बारे में यूहन्ना 13:6-10 में बात की - यहाँ पर पद 10 पर विशेष ध्यान दीजिए। इब्रानियों का लेखक भी इब्रानियों 9:6-10 में इन्हीं अनुष्ठान के अनुसार शुद्ध और स्वच्छ होने की बातों का उल्लेख करता है।

    इसीलिए जब प्रभु यीशु मसीह के अग्रदूत, यूहन्ना बपतिस्मा देने वाले ने अपनी सेवकाई का आरंभ पश्चाताप के प्रचार के साथ किया और यरदन नदी में बपतिस्मा देने लगा (मत्ती 3:1-6); और इसी प्रकार से जब पतरस ने भक्त यहूदियों से पश्चाताप करने और बपतिस्मा लेने के लिए कहा (प्रेरितों 2:38), तो इनमें से किसी की कही बात से किसी को कोई अचंभा नहीं हुआ। यहाँ तक कि फरीसियों और सदूकियों ने भी बपतिस्मे के लिए यूहन्ना बपतिस्मा देने वाले के आह्वान को बिना किसी विवाद के स्वीकार कर लिया, क्योंकि उनकी समझ के अनुसार यह कोई नई बात नहीं थी। यह उनकी जानी-पहचानी धोने और शुद्ध तथा स्वच्छ होने की रीति के अनुसार ही था; वे इसे किसी रीति से शुद्धि के साथ जोड़कर देखते थे (यूहन्ना 3:25)। तो, यद्यपि पुराने नियम में बपतिस्मे का कोई उल्लेख नहीं है, किन्तु फिर भी व्यवस्था तथा भविष्यद्वक्ताओं में लोगों के जल के द्वारा स्नान करने, धोने और स्वच्छ होने के कई हवाले हैं। साथ ही, जल के द्वारा बाहरी रीति से स्वच्छ होने को भीतरी रीति से पापों से स्वच्छ होने के चिह्न के रूप में भी स्वीकार किया जाता था, जैसा कि कुछ उपरोक्त हवालों से स्पष्ट है; साथ ही यशायाह 1:16; ज़कर्याह 13:1; यूहन्ना 13:10; इब्रानियों 10:19-22; तीतुस 3:4-7 को भी देखिए।

    यदि आपने प्रभु की शिष्यता को अभी तक स्वीकार नहीं किया है, तो अपने अनन्त जीवन और स्वर्गीय आशीषों को सुनिश्चित करने के लिए अभी प्रभु यीशु के पक्ष में अपना निर्णय कर लीजिए। जहाँ प्रभु की आज्ञाकारिता है, उसके वचन की बातों का आदर और पालन है, वहाँ प्रभु की आशीष और सुरक्षा भी है। प्रभु यीशु से अपने पापों के लिए क्षमा माँगकर, स्वेच्छा से तथा सच्चे मन से अपने आप को उसकी अधीनता में समर्पित कर दीजिए - उद्धार और स्वर्गीय जीवन का यही एकमात्र मार्ग है। आपको स्वेच्छा और सच्चे मन से प्रभु यीशु मसीह से केवल एक छोटी प्रार्थना करनी है, और साथ ही अपना जीवन उसे पूर्णतः समर्पित करना है। आप यह प्रार्थना और समर्पण कुछ इस प्रकार से भी कर सकते हैं, “प्रभु यीशु, मैं अपने पापों के लिए पश्चातापी हूँ, उनके लिए आप से क्षमा माँगता हूँ। मैं आपका धन्यवाद करता हूँ कि आपने मेरे पापों की क्षमा और समाधान के लिए उन पापों को अपने ऊपर लिया, उनके कारण मेरे स्थान पर क्रूस की मृत्यु सही, गाड़े गए, और मेरे उद्धार के लिए आप तीसरे दिन जी भी उठे, और आज जीवित प्रभु परमेश्वर हैं। कृपया मुझे और मेरे पापों को क्षमा करें, मुझे अपनी शरण में लें, और मुझे अपना शिष्य बना लें। मैं अपना जीवन आप के हाथों में समर्पित करता हूँ।” सच्चे और समर्पित मन से की गई आपकी एक प्रार्थना आपके वर्तमान तथा भविष्य को, इस लोक के और परलोक के जीवन को, अनन्तकाल के लिए स्वर्गीय एवं आशीषित बना देगी।

Preliminary Considerations (2) - The Old Testament Antecedents

   

    While considering the third elementary principle, Baptisms from Hebrews 6:1-2; in the last article we have seen that since God’s Word the Bible is the one and only true, eternal, infallible, unalterable Word of God forever established in heaven; never ever changing according to time, place or person. Therefore, applying this fact to our study on baptism means that what the term ‘baptism’ or ‘to be baptized’ meant for the people who had taken baptism in the New Testament times initially, the same meaning is the basic, unchanging meaning for everyone else, at all times, and all places. Every other meaning and interpretation can supplement or complement this basic meaning, but never replace or change it. In this context we had brought up two points for further consideration - firstly, what, if anything, does the Old Testament say about baptism? Second, why did no one accuse John the Baptist or the disciples of Christ Jesus of starting off some new unscriptural ritual? How come, everyone seemed to be familiar with the term ‘baptism’, and accepted it, without any controversy? Both of these points are related, and we will see about them today.

    We need to realize that in the Old Testament although baptism has not been mentioned, but in the Law, and in the ceremonies and rituals given by God through Moses to the Israelites, ceremonial washings were an integral and very important part of the observances. Consider an incidence related to the Lord Jesus and the Pharisees, given in Matthew 15:1-3. From this incidence we can see and understand how particular and adherent the Pharisees were maintaining their ceremonies and rituals. Yet they went to John the Baptist to be baptized (Matthew 3:7), and never objected to the baptism being practiced by John the Baptist as well as the disciples of the Lord Jesus (John 4:1-2). If John the Baptist, or the Lord Jesus, or the Lord’s disciples had started something new, then surely those who could object to not washing hands before food, would have objected to it and protested much more seriously about this new practice. These examples show that baptism, though not mentioned under this term in the Old Testament, but it was nothing new for those people; in some form was already known and accepted by the Jews and their religious leaders. Consider some Old Testament examples of ceremonial purification, washing of clothes, and bathing as prescribed in the Law:

• For people ritually unclean (Leviticus 14:8-9).

• For people made unclean because of body fluids (Leviticus 15:3-12).

• For people become unclean because of eating blood or dead animals (Leviticus 17:15-16).

• For anyone who has become unclean by touching a dead person, or bones of a man, or a grave (Numbers 19:16-20)

• The High Priest, Aaron being the first one, on the day of Atonement had to first make himself ceremonially clean and then enter the Most Holy Place of the Tabernacle (Leviticus 16:23-28).

    The Old Testament prophets also spoke of washing and cleansing from sins to become acceptable to God (Isaiah 1:16; Zechariah 13:1). And, the Lord Jesus in John 13, alludes to this in His conversation with Peter about washing of Peter’s feet John 13:6-10 - pay particular attention to verse 10 here. The author of Hebrews also alludes to these ceremonial washings in Hebrews 9:6-10.

    Therefore, when John the Baptist in his ministry as the forerunner of the Messiah, the Lord Jesus, came preaching repentance and baptizing people in the river Jordan (Matthew 3:1-6); and similarly, when Peter asked the devout Jews to repent and be baptized (Acts 2:38), neither of them surprised anyone by asking the people to be baptized. Even the Pharisees and Sadducees accepted John the Baptist’s call to be baptized, without raising any controversy, since to their understanding this was nothing new. It was similar to their known and accepted practice of ceremonially cleansing themselves; in some manner, they associated baptism with purification (John 3:25). So, even though baptism is not mentioned in the Old Testament, yet there are ample references in the Law as well as in the writings of the Prophets, of people being asked to wash, bathe, and cleanse themselves, using water. Moreover, outside cleansing with water was also known and accepted as symbolical of the inner cleansing from sin, as is apparent from some of the references given above; also see Isaiah 1:16; Zechariah 13:1; John 13:10; Hebrews 10:19-22; Titus 3:4-7.

    In the next article we will consider the meaning of the word used in the original Greek language and translated as ‘baptism’ in English in the New Testament. 

    If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Repenting of your sins, and asking the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely, surrendering yourself to Him - is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. You only have to say a short but sincere prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ willingly and with a penitent heart, and at the same time completely commit and submit your life to Him. You can also make this prayer and submission in words something like, “Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sins and repent of them. I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself, paying for them through your life.  Because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, and you rose again from the grave on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God and have freely provided to me the forgiveness, and redemption from my sins, through faith in you. Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.

    इस बात को ध्यान में रखते हुए, जब हम परमेश्वर के वचन से बपतिस्मे से संबंधित विभिन्न बातों और शिक्षाओं में जाते हैं, तो यह हमारे लिए बहुत सहायक होगा कि हम बपतिस्मे के बारे में कुछ आरंभिक बातों को भी देख और समझ लें। इन आरंभिक बातों की समझ के लिए हमें अपने आप को उस समय-काल में ले जाना होगा, जब इन बातों को पहली बार कहा गया, या ये घटित हुई थीं, और जब इन्हें परमेश्वर के वचन में लिखवाया गया। यदि हम इन बातों को उन लोगों के दृष्टिकोण से देख और समझ सकें, जिन्होंने इन्हें पहली बार सुना था और अपने जीवनों में लागू किया था, तो हम यह भी समझने पाएंगे कि उन्होंने इन के बारे में क्या समझा था, और इन्हें अपने जीवनों में किस प्रकार लागू किया था। इस बात को यदि कुछ भिन्न रीति से कहा जाए तो, बपतिस्मे से संबंधित बातें और इस शब्द के सबसे पहले और आरंभिक उपयोग, उस समय में बपतिस्मे को दिए जाने का उस समय के लोगों के लिए जो अर्थ, जो व्यावहारिक अभिप्राय था, यही अर्थ और व्यावहारिक अभिप्राय ही इसका मूल और बुनियादी अर्थ और उपयोग है। यही वह अपरिवर्तनीय तथ्य है जिसे हमें स्वीकार करना है, समझना है, और अपने जीवन में लागू करना है। अन्य कोई भी अर्थ या व्याख्या इस मूल और बुनियादी अर्थ एवं उपयोग में कुछ योगदान कर सकती है, उसे और अधिक स्पष्ट कर सकती है, किन्तु कभी भी उसे बदल या हटा कर उसका स्थान नहीं ले सकती है। अन्यथा, जैसे ऊपर कहा गया है, यह परमेश्वर के वचन को बदलना, उसे असत्य, चूक जाने वाला, और परिवर्तनीय कर देना होगा। 

    बाइबल में बपतिस्मे का पहला उल्लेख नए नियम में मत्ती 3 अध्याय में, प्रभु यीशु मसीह के अग्रदूत यूहन्ना बपतिस्मा देने वाले की सेवकाई के साथ किया गया है। बपतिस्मे को हम जिस तरह से जानते और समझते हैं, उसका वैसा कोई उल्लेख पुराने नियम में नहीं है। किन्तु पुराना नियम इसके बारे में पूर्णतः शांत भी नहीं है। परमेश्वर के वचन के एक तथ्य पर थोड़ा विचार कीजिए; इस तथ्य पर यदि किसी का ध्यान जाता भी है तो भी शायद ही कभी जाता होगा। और शायद ही कभी अथवा कभी ध्यान नहीं जाने का कारण है, क्योंकि हम बपतिस्मे के बारे में उन्हीं बातों के आदि हो चुके हैं, उन्हें वैसे ही देखते और समझते हैं, जैसे हमारे डिनॉमिनेशन, मत, अथवा समुदाय की मान्यताओं और सिद्धान्तों के आधार पर, हमारे धार्मिक अगुवे और प्राचीन हमें सिखा और पढ़ा देते हैं। विचार करने के लिए आवश्यक इस तथ्य का दो जगह पर उल्लेख किया गया है - पहला, यूहन्ना बपतिस्मा देने वाले की सेवकाई के साथ मत्ती 3:1-7 में; और दूसरा, प्रेरितों 2:38 में, भक्त यहूदियों को पतरस द्वारा किए गए पहले प्रचार में, जिसमें वह उन्हें पश्चाताप करने और बपतिस्मा लेने के लिए कहता है।

    यूहन्ना की सेवकाई वाले हवाले से हम देखते हैं कि न केवल जन-साधारण, वरन फरीसी और सदूकी भी, जो परमेश्वर की व्यवस्था तथा पुराने नियम पवित्र शास्त्र के ज्ञाता थे, उसके पास बपतिस्मा लेने के लिए आए। पतरस द्वारा “आकाश के नीचे की हर एक जाति में से” आए हुए भक्त यहूदियों (प्रेरितों 2:5), अर्थात जन-साधारण के लोगों से पश्चाताप और बपतिस्मे के लिए किए गए आह्वान में यह निहित है कि वे लोग व्यवस्था की बातों और माँगो से भली भांति परिचित रहे होंगे। लेकिन न तो जन-साधारण ने, न फरीसियों और सदूकियों ने जकरयाह याजक के पुत्र यूहन्ना बपतिस्मा देने वाले को कोई चुनौती दी कि उसने कोई नई बात जो परमेश्वर के वचन में दी ही नहीं गई है उसे सिखाना और बताना क्यों आरंभ कर दिया है? उन्होंने न ही उस पर परमेश्वर के वचन के उल्लंघन का आरोप लगाया, और न ही उसे परमेश्वर की निन्दा करने का दोषी ठहराया। इसी प्रकार से, जब पतरस ने उन भक्त यहूदियों से बपतिस्मा लेने के लिए कहा, तो किसी ने भी उससे इस बात को समझाने के लिए नहीं कहा; और न ही परमेश्वर पवित्र आत्मा ने इस बात के किसी स्पष्टीकरण को वचन में लिखवाने की कोई आवश्यकता समझी। इन बातों का प्रकट अभिप्राय है कि आम लोग, फरीसी और सदूकी, और भक्त यहूदी, सभी समझते और स्वीकार करते थे कि शब्द ‘बपतिस्मा’ या ‘बपतिस्मा लेने’ का क्या अर्थ है; उनके लिए यह कोई नई अथवा अनसुनी या विचित्र बात नहीं थी।इसलिए, प्रभु यीशु की पृथ्वी की सेवकाई के समय बपतिस्मे के जैसे समझा, स्वीकारा, और पालन किया जाता था, वही उसका मौलिक, अपरिवर्तनीय स्वरूप है, जिस में कुछ अन्य सहायक बातें जोड़ी तो जा सकती हैं, किन्तु जिसे कभी भी बदला नहीं जा सकता है; अन्यथा यह परमेश्वर के वचन के चरित्र के विरुद्ध होगा, और इसका यही अभिप्राय होगा कि परमेश्वर के वचन में दिए गए और हमारे पालन के लिए हमें सौंपे गए तथ्यों को बाद में कभी बदला जा सकता है; जो कि एक पूर्णतः अस्वीकार्य और गलत धारणा है। अगले लेख में हम अपने अध्ययन को यहाँ से आगे ज़ारी रखेंगे।

Preliminary Considerations (1) – People’s Initial Understanding

    Before we get into our study on the third elementary principle mentioned in Hebrews 6:1-2, and our topic for the day, i.e.; baptism, we need to become aware of a basic fact related to interpreting and understanding the Bible. The Bible is the one and only true, eternal, infallible, unalterable Word of God forever established in heaven (Nehemiah 9:13; Psalm 19:9; Psalm 111:7-8; Psalm 119:75, 86, 89, 138, 142, 144, 152, 160, 172; Proverbs 30:5; Ecclesiastes 3:14; Isaiah 40:8; Jeremiah 31:36; Matthew 24:35; John 17:17; Romans 3:4; 1 Peter 1:25). It does not change with time, place, or person; it always remains the same for everybody, forever. Therefore, what it meant for the people at the place, and at the time its texts were written; that will always remain and mean the same for everyone else, at every place, and at any time. If it were to change due to any consideration, then it cannot be considered the always true, eternal, infallible and unalterable Word of God. For then some portion of it will no longer remain true, will change, hence it will not be eternal and unalterable, and since a part of it has failed, so it will not be infallible either. To state it simply, in that case, the Bible can never be accepted as the Word of God, and can never be trusted for anything; since then with time, or place, or person, parts of it will keep varying. Therefore, those who accept the Bible as the Word of God, will also have to accept it whole-heartedly with its characteristics, and not only keep them in mind when studying and interpreting the Bible, but also apply them to the meanings and interpretations that are given to its words, verses, and passages; and assess and accept or reject those meanings and interpretations accordingly.

    With this in mind, as we go into various aspects and teachings about baptism, from God’s Word, it will be very helpful to look into and understand some preliminary things about baptism. To see and understand these preliminary things, we will also need to place ourselves in the same time-frame, as was, when these things first happened and were written in God’s Word. If we can understand these things from the point-of-view of those people who first heard of them and their application, we can also understand how they understood them and applied them to their lives. To put it in a different manner, the things related to baptism and the use of this term, when it was first said and done, conveyed a certain meaning and understanding of this word and its application to the people of that time. This meaning and understanding of this word and its application is the basic, unalterable fact, that has to be accepted, understood and applied by us today. Every other meaning and interpretation may supplement and complement this initial basic meaning and understanding, but none can ever replace or change this initial basic meaning. Else, as stated above, it would tantamount to altering God’s Word and rendering it untrue, fallible and alterable.

    The first mention of baptism in the Bible is in the New Testament, in Matthew chapter 3, with the ministry of John the Baptist, the forerunner of the Lord Jesus Christ. There is no mention of baptism, as we know it, in the Old Testament. But the Old Testament is not completely silent about it either. Ponder over a scarcely, if at all noticed fact from God’s Word. This fact is scarcely ever, or not at all noticed by us, since we are all so accustomed, trained, and taught, to think about baptism in the manner our religious leaders and elders preach and teach to us about it, according to the beliefs and doctrines of our denominations, sects, and groups. This fact to ponder over is mentioned at two places - first, with the ministry of John the Baptist in Matthew 3:1-7; and second, in the first preaching of Peter to the devout Jews and his call to them for repentance and being baptized, in Acts 2:38. 

    With John’s ministry we see that not just the common people, but also the Pharisees and Sadducees, the experts and teachers of God’s Law and the Old Testament Scriptures, came to him for baptism. In Peter’s call for repentance and baptism, he was addressing the devout Jews (Acts 2:5), the common people, who had come from “every nation under heaven”, who would have been well versed with the requirements of the Law and its fulfilment. But neither the common people, nor the Pharisees and Sadducees who were scholars of God’s Word, challenged John, the son of Zacharias, a priest, for starting something new; or of preaching and teaching something not given in God’s Word; they did not accuse him of breaking God’s Word, or of blasphemy in the name of God. Similarly, the devout Jews when told by Peter to be baptized, did not ask for this term to be explained to them; nor has the Holy Spirit considered it necessary to have an explanation of this term recorded in God’s Word. The evident implication is that the common people, the Pharisees and Sadducees, and the devout Jews, they all understood and accepted what the term baptism or ‘to be baptized’ means; it was nothing new or unheard of and strange for them. Therefore, baptism as understood, accepted, and practiced in Lord Jesus’s earthly ministry time is the basic unalterable form, that could be supplemented, but never replaced; else it would against the character of God’s Word by implying that facts recorded in God’s Word and given as such to us for practicing, can be changed at some later date; an unacceptable and false notion. We will continue our study from this point onwards in the next article. 

    If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Repenting of your sins, and asking the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely, surrendering yourself to Him - is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. You only have to say a short but sincere prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ willingly and with a penitent heart, and at the same time completely commit and submit your life to Him. You can also make this prayer and submission in words something like, “Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sins and repent of them. I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself, paying for them through your life.  Because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, and you rose again from the grave on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God and have freely provided to me the forgiveness, and redemption from my sins, through faith in you. Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.

    विभिन्न मसीही समुदायों और डिनॉमिनेशनों में बपतिस्मे के संस्कार के किए जाने और उसके विषय समझ को लेकर इतनी भिन्नताएँ इस बात का प्रमाण हैं कि बपतिस्मे, को भी बहुत गलत समझा जाता और उसका दुरुपयोग किया जाता है। व्यक्ति जिस डिनॉमिनेशन, मत, या समुदाय से संबंध रखता है, उसके अनुसार बपतिस्मा देने, उसके उद्देश्य और उपयोग के बारे में बहुत सी भिन्नताएं देखी जाती हैं, जो बाइबल के अनुसार सही और वास्तविक हो भी सकती हैं, और नहीं भी। जैसे मसीहियों में बाइबल की अधिकाँश शिक्षाओं से सम्बन्धित त्रुटियों के देखे जाने के लिए सही है, वैसे ही बपतिस्मे के बारे में इन भिन्नताओं और त्रुटियों का आधारभूत कारण भी वही है - मसीहियों में व्यक्तिगत बाइबल अध्ययन की कमी; उसके स्थान पर उन का पुल्पिट से कही और सिखाई गई बातों को  तथ्यों पर आधारित एवं सही मान कर चलते रहना। आने वाले दिनों में, परमेश्वर के मार्गदर्शन और अनुग्रह के द्वारा, हम केवल बाइबल के आधार पर देखेंगे कि परमेश्वर के वचन में बपतिस्मे के बारे में क्या लिखा और सिखाया गया है, तथा क्या निर्देश दिए गए हैं। लेकिन हम इस बात के विषय बिल्कुल स्पष्ट और निश्चित रहें कि बाइबल के अनुसार, उद्धार के लिए बपतिस्मा कतई आवश्यक नहीं है, बपतिस्मा प्राप्त कर लेने से व्यक्ति स्वतः ही परमेश्वर के परिवार का अँग नहीं बन जाता है, और न ही स्वर्ग में उसका प्रवेश निश्चित हो जाता है, जिसे रोका नहीं सकता है; ये सभी धारणाएँ गलत हैं और पूर्णतः निराधार हैं। हम उन बाइबल के पदों को भी देखेंगे जिनके आधार पर इस झूठी धारणा को बताया और सिखाया जाता है, लेकिन पहले हम बपतिस्मे के बारे में आरंभिक और मूल बातों को देखेंगे और समझेंगे। 

    आज, समाप्त करने से पहले, हमें बाइबल के बारे में एक बहुत ही साधारण और बुनियादी बात को समझने और मन में बैठा लेने की आवश्यकता है। परमेश्वर ने बाइबल को हम साधारण लोगों के लिए लिखवाया और उपलब्ध करवाया है, कि हम उसे पढ़ें, उसका पालन करें, उसे अपने जीवनों में उपयोग करें। जिस समय में परमेश्वर पवित्र आत्मा अपनी प्रेरणा के द्वारा बाइबल की विभिन्न पुस्तकों, पत्रियों, कविताओं, और अन्य सामग्री को लिखवा रहा था, समाज के अधिकांश लोग या तो अनपढ़ थे, या बहुत कम पढ़े-लिखे होते थे। साथ ही, उन दिनों में, विशेषकर हमारे नए नियम के इस काल के संदर्भ में, आरंभिक कई सदियों तक न तो कोई बाइबल विद्यालय थे, और न ही कोई बाइबल शिक्षा-प्रशिक्षण प्राप्त किए हुए लोग। किन्तु प्रभु यीशु मसीह के बाद, प्रथम शताब्दी और प्रथम कलीसिया के समय से, लोग बाइबल का अध्ययन करते, उसे समझते, उसकी बातों को अपने जीवन में लागू करते, और उसका अनुसरण करते चले आ रहे हैं, वे भी जो या तो अनपढ़ या बहुत कम पढ़े लिखे हैं। और यह आज भी सारे संसार के सभी स्थानों पर होता आ रहा है; तथा परमेश्वर का वचन अपना काम कर रहा है, उसके पाठकों के जीवनों को बदल रहा है (यशायाह 55:11)। दूसरे शब्दों में, यह एक शैतानी झूठ है जिसे उसने व्यापक रीति से फैला तथा गहराई से लोगों में बैठा रखा है कि बाइबल पढ़ने, समझने, तथा पालन करने के लिए कठिन पुस्तक है। इसे समझने के लिए विशेष शिक्षा और प्रशिक्षण की आवश्यकता होती है। जब कि बाइबल का सीधा सा तथ्य यही है कि न केवल परमेश्वर ने इस जीवन बदल देने वाली पुस्तक को साधारण लोगों के लिए लिखवाया और उपलब्ध करवाया है, वरन इसके लिए प्रत्येक मसीही विश्वासी को उस एकमात्र शिक्षक को भी उपलब्ध करवाया है जिसकी इसके लिए आवश्यकता है, जिसके अतिरिक्त और किसी की आवश्यकता नहीं है - परमेश्वर पवित्र आत्मा (यूहन्ना 14:26)। पवित्र आत्मा प्रत्येक नया जन्म पाए हुए मसीही विश्वासी के अन्दर निवास करता है; जैसे ही व्यक्ति पापों से पश्चाताप करके यीशु को अपना उद्धारकर्ता और प्रभु मान लेता है, पवित्र आत्मा उसमें आकर निवास करने लग जाता है। जैसे-जैसे व्यक्ति पवित्र आत्मा के निर्देशों और मार्गदर्शन के अनुसार चलने और व्यवहार करने लगता है (गलातियों 5:16, 25), वह परिपक्व भी होता जाता है, तथा बाइबल उसके लिए और अधिक स्पष्ट होती जाती है, जीवन में और भी अधिक आनन्द आता चला जाता है। 

    यदि आप एक मसीही विश्वासी हैं, तो कृपया अपने जीवन को जाँच कर देख लें कि आप वास्तव में नया जन्म पाए हुए प्रभु यीशु के शिष्य हैं, पापों से छुड़ाए गए हैं तथा आप ने अपना जीवन प्रभु की आज्ञाकारिता में जीने के लिए उस को समर्पित किया है कि नहीं। आपके लिए यह अनिवार्य है कि आप परमेश्वर के वचन की सही शिक्षाओं को जानने के द्वारा एक परिपक्व विश्वासी बनें, तथा सभी शिक्षाओं को वचन की कसौटी पर परखने, और बेरिया के विश्वासियों के समान, लोगों की बातों को पहले वचन से जाँचने और उनकी सत्यता को निश्चित करने के बाद ही उनको स्वीकार करने और मानने वाले बनें (प्रेरितों 17:11; 1 थिस्सलुनीकियों 5:21)। अन्यथा शैतान द्वारा छोड़े हुए झूठे प्रेरित और भविष्यद्वक्ता मसीह के सेवक बन कर (2 कुरिन्थियों 11:13-15) अपनी ठग विद्या और चतुराई से आपको प्रभु के लिए अप्रभावी कर देंगे और आप के मसीही जीवन एवं आशीषों का नाश कर देंगे।

Prologue

   

    For the past over two months, we have been studying about the basic teachings of the Christian Faith, that help in providing a firm foundation for the disciples of the Lord Jesus, the people of God, to build and grow in their Faith. Presently we are considering the six elementary principles mentioned in Hebrews 6:1-2, and having seen the first two, from today we will begin considering the third elementary principles, of “Baptisms.” The basic reason why so many variations in carrying out baptisms and differences of understanding about it have come up and taken root amongst the different Christian groups is a serious lack of personal Bible Study by the Christians. Instead, Christians are more inclined to accept and believe whatever is preached and taught to them from the pulpit, trusting it will be the truth. This has given Satan an open door to bring in his heresies, wrong teachings, and false doctrines and mislead the people into serious errors and their deleterious consequences. One very common, but patently false notion about taking baptism amongst the people is that it makes one a ‘Christian,’ acceptable to God, and worthy of entering heaven. Those who have been reading and pondering the articles presented in this study would have seen the stark difference in what is commonly believed and followed by the people, and what the Word of God actually says, and asks to be done.

    These variations related to the procedure and understanding about sacrament of Baptism in different Christian denominations and groups shows that it is a grossly misunderstood and misused sacrament amongst the Christians. Based on one’s denomination, sect, or group, there are many things taught and implemented in those circles, for administering baptism, for its purpose and function, which may or may not be Biblically true and factual. What is true for the many errors related to Biblical teachings amongst the Christians, for baptism too, the basic underlying cause of these errors and wrong notions remains the same – a lack of personal Bible Study, and learning first hand from God’s Word, what God has to say about it; instead, the people’s relying on whatever is preached and taught from the pulpit, accepting it as being factual and true. In the days ahead, through God’s guidance and grace, we will look at the various texts, teachings and instructions about baptism, only from the Bible, as they are given in God’s Word. But let us be very clear that Biblically speaking, it is an absolutely unBiblical, baseless, and absolutely false notion that baptism is required for salvation, and a baptized person is ipso-facto a member of God’s family, his entry into heaven is guaranteed. We will be looking into the various Biblical verses that are misinterpreted and misused in support of this false concept, after we have first understood about the basics of baptism.

    Before we close today, we need to understand and keep in mind a very basic fact about God’s Word the Bible - God had it written and made available to us, the common people, to read, use, and follow it. At the time God the Holy Spirit inspired and got written the various texts of the Bible books, letters, poetry, and other contents, the overwhelming majority of the people were either illiterate or poorly literate. Also, at that time, especially from the point-of-view of our age of the New Testament, for many initial centuries, there were no Bible training schools or their trained clergy. Since the first Church of the first century AD, the Bible was being studied, understood, applied and followed by the common people - poorly literate or illiterate, as is being done the world over even today; and God’s Word continued to work in the lives of its readers and change them (Isaiah 55:11). In other words, this is a satanic lie spread and deeply established among the people that the Bible is a difficult book to read, understand, and follow. That it needs special training to be able to understand it. The fact of the matter is that God has not only provided to the common people His life-changing Word, but has also given to every Christian Believer the one and only teacher required to learn God’s Word - the Holy Spirit of God (John 14:26) who resides within every Born-Again Christian Believer. All one needs to do is to repent and accept the Lord Jesus as one’s savior and Lord, and allow the Holy Spirit to lead and guide him (Galatians 5:16, 25). As one matures through obedience to the instructions of the Holy Spirit, the teachings of the Bible will also become clearer, and bring increasing joy in life.

    If you are a Christian Believer, then please examine your life and make sure that you are actually a Born-Again disciple of the Lord, i.e., are redeemed from your sins, have submitted and surrendered your life to the Lord Jesus to live in obedience to Him and His Word. Whoever may be the preacher or teacher, but you should always, like the Berean Believers, first cross-check and test all teachings that you receive, from the Word of God. Only after ascertaining the truth and veracity of the teachings brought to you by men, should you accept and obey them (Acts 17:11; 1 Thessalonians 5:21). If you do not do this, the false apostles and prophets sent by Satan as ministers of Christ (2 Corinthians 11:13-15), will by their trickery, cunningness, and craftiness render you ineffective for the Lord and cause severe damage to your Christian life and your rewards.

    If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord.     एक स्थिर विश्वास बनाए रखने के लिए प्रत्येक मसीही विश्वासी को परमेश्वर के सम्पूर्ण वचन को सीखना और जानना चाहिए। बाइबल की तीन प्रकार की शिक्षाएँ है जो मौलिक हैं, जिन से एक दृढ़ नींव मिलती है जिस पर मसीही विश्वास को बनाया और बढ़ाया जा सके, तथा प्रत्येक मसीही विश्वासी को उन्हें जानना चाहिए। ये तीन हैं, सुसमाचार से सम्बन्धित शिक्षाएँ, जिन्हें हम देख चुके हैं; इब्रानियों 6:1-2 में उल्लेखित छः आरम्भिक शिक्षाएँ, जिन्हें हम देख रहे हैं और वर्तमान में उनमें से दूसरी, “परमेश्वर पर विश्वास” के बारे में सीख रहे हैं; और व्यावहारिक मसीही जीवन से सम्बन्धित शिक्षाएँ, जिन्हें हम आने वाले समय में, आरम्भिक शिक्षाओं के बाद सीखेंगे। किसी में भी विश्वास रखने के लिए, हमें उस व्यक्ति के बारे मैं, उसके गुणों, विशेषताओं, और चरित्र के बारे में जानना आवश्यक है; और यही बात परमेश्वर पर विश्वास रखने पर लागू होती है। हम देख चुके हैं कि परमेश्वर ने एक खुला निमंत्रण छोड़ा हुआ है कि लोग आएँ और परख कर देखें कि वह कितना भला है (भजन 34:8)। दूसरी आरम्भिक बात, अर्थात “परमेश्वर पर विश्वास करना” के बारे में सीखते हुए हम परमेश्वर के गुणों और विशेषताओं को देख रहे हैं, विशेषकर उनके बारे में जो कलीसियाओं में बहुधा बताए और सिखाए नहीं जाते हैं। परन्तु प्रत्येक मसीही विश्वासी को उनके बारे में जानना चाहिए। जब विश्वासी उन गुणों और उनके अभिप्रायों के बारे में सीखेंगे, तो परमेश्वर पर विश्वास रखने के बारे में उन्हें एक दृढ़ नींव मिलेगी। आज हम परमेश्वर के एक ऐसे ही गुण के बारे में देखेंगे जिसके बारे में शायद ही कभी कहा या सिखाया जाता है, अर्थात, परमेश्वर के जलन रखने के बारे में।

    परमेश्वर का वचन बाइबल हमें सिखाती है कि परमेश्वर जलन रखने वाला परमेश्वर है (निर्गमन 20:5; 34:14; यहोशू 24:19)। परमेश्वर के जलन रख कर कार्य करने को समझने के लिए, हमें इस बात को ध्यान में बनाए रखना चाहिए कि परमेश्वर अपने लोगों पर अपने अधिकार या स्वामित्व को बहुत गम्भीरता से लेता है; और कभी भी, किसी को भी, किसी भी कीमत पर, उन्हें उसके हाथों से ले जाने नहीं देता है (यूहन्ना 10:28-29)। वह कभी भी, किसी भी कारण से न तो उन्हें छोड़ता है और न ही त्यागता है (इब्रानियों 13:5), और इसीलिए, विश्वासी उनके पथभ्रष्ट और अनाज्ञाकारी जीवन के बावजूद, उद्धार कभी भी नहीं खो सकते हैं। लेकिन परमेश्वर ऐसे गैर मसीही बातों के जीवन और व्यवहार की अनदेखी भी नहीं करता है, उसे हल्के में नहीं लेता है, और उनके पथभ्रष्ट एवं अनाज्ञाकारिता के जीवन के कारण परमेश्वर के लोग परमेश्वर द्वारा दण्डित किए जाते हैं, यदि आवश्यकता होती है तो घोर दण्ड भी पाते हैं; लेकिन परमेश्वर उन्हें कभी अपने से अलग नहीं करता है, उन्हें त्यागता नहीं है। जो परमेश्वर के लोग हैं, वे न केवल उसकी सन्तान, उसके परिवार का अँग हैं, वे उसकी अमूल्य सम्पत्ति भी हैं। वह उनके, उस का होने को, उन लोगों पर उसके अधिकार या स्वामित्व को बहुत गम्भीरता से लेता है। पथभ्रष्ट होने और सँसार से समझौता करने के लिए, और विश्वास में दृढ़ बने रहने के स्थान पर शैतान द्वारा उनके सामने लाए गए प्रलोभनों में पड़कर गिर जाने के लिए वह उनके साथ सख्ती से व्यवहार करेगा, आवश्यकता हुई तो ताड़ना, घोर ताड़ना भी करेगा – जैसा कि हम इस्राएल के इतिहास से देखते हैं; किन्तु परमेश्वर कभी भी किसी को भी, जो उसके हैं उन्हें उस से ले जाने नहीं देगा। एक बार जो परमेश्वर के सन्तान, उसके परिवार का अँग बन गया, वह अनन्तकाल तक परमेश्वर की सन्तान और उसके परिवार का अँग बना रहेगा। यद्यपि बाइबल इसके बारे में बहुत स्पष्ट है, और सम्पूर्ण बाइबल में किसी के भी उद्धार खो देने का कहीं पर भी, कोई एक भी, उदाहरण नहीं है, फिर भी शैतान ने लोगों के मनों में यह गलत धारणा बहुत गहराई से बैठा रखी है कि यदि भले कार्यों के द्वारा उद्धार को बना कर नहीं रखेंगे, तो अपने उद्धार को खो देंगे। बाइबल का तथ्य यही है कि उद्धार पाया हुआ व्यक्ति ताड़ना पा सकता है, और पाता भी है, और हो सकता है कि अपने पथभ्रष्ट जीवन के कारण स्वर्ग में खाली हाथ प्रवेश करे (1 कुरिन्थियों 3:13-15), किन्तु वह अपना उद्धार कभी नहीं खोएगा।

    इसे ध्यान में रखते हुए अब हम परमेश्वर के जलन रखने के बारे में विचार कर सकते हैं। हमारी सामान्य प्रवृत्ति जलन रखने को एक नकारात्मक रीति से, एक बुराई के रूप में देखने की होती है, क्योंकि हमारे प्रतिदिन के जीवन में हम इसे इसी प्रकार से देखते और अनुभव करते हैं। किन्तु मूल इब्रानी भाषा में परमेश्वर के जलन रखने के लिए यह इस तरह से उपयोग नहीं किया गया है। मूल यूनानी भाषा में, जिस में नया नियम लिखा गया है, जिस शब्द का अनुवाद ‘जलन रखना’ किया गया है, उस शब्द का शब्दार्थ है “उकसाना या उत्तेजित करना; अर्थात, प्रतिद्वंद्वी होने के लिए उभारना।” अर्थात प्रभु को रीस दिलाने या जलन दिलाने से तात्पर्य है कि उसे उसके अधिकार या स्वामित्व को जताने के लिए उभारना अथवा उत्तेजित करना। प्रभु अपने विश्वासियों से, अपनी सन्तानों से असीम प्रेम करता है; इतना कि उन्हें छुड़ा लेने और उन के साथ मेल-मिलाप करवाने के लिए उसने अपने एकलौते पौत्र को भी दे दिया (यूहन्ना 3:16; रोमियों 5:1, 11); वह उनमें पवित्र आत्मा के रूप में निवास करता है (1 कुरिन्थियों 3:16; 6:19); और प्रभु ने अपने आज्ञाकारी स्‍वर्गदूतों को उनकी सेवा-टहल करने वाली आत्माएँ बना दिया है (इब्रानियों 1:14)। अब प्रत्युत्तर में वह यही चाहता है कि उसके लोग उस से, और केवल उसी से प्रेम रखें (2 कुरिन्थियों 5:15); प्रभु के प्रति उनके प्रेम को किसी अन्य के साथ विभाजित न करें, और प्रभु को ऐसे ही हल्के में न लें, प्रभु को अनेकों में से एक ईश्वर न समझें (व्यवस्थाविवरण 32:16, 21; भजन 78:58)।

    यह और भी स्पष्ट तथा उचित तब हो जाता है जब हम इस बात पर मनन करें और एहसास करें कि समस्त सृष्टि में केवल दो ही ‘शक्तियाँ’ हैं; एक सृष्टिकर्ता परमेश्वर है (जो वास्तव में एकमात्र शक्ति है), जो इस सृष्टि का स्वामी है, और उसके साथ उसके स्वर्गदूत हैं। और दूसरी ‘शक्ति’ शैतान है, जो एक बलवाई स्वर्गदूत है, और उसके साथ उसके दूत हैं। शैतान और उसके दूत या लोग, सभी परमेश्वर के बैरी, विरोधी, प्रतिस्पर्धी हैं, जो उनका समय पूरा होने पर हटा दिए जाएँगे और अनन्तकाल के नरक में डाल दिए जाएँगे (मत्ती 8:29)। इनके अतिरिक्त कोई अन्य शक्ति अथवा शक्ति का स्त्रोत नहीं है; और हर जन या तो परमेश्वर के साथ सम्बन्धित है, अन्यथा वह स्वतः ही परमेश्वर के बैरी और प्रतिस्पर्धी शैतान और उसके लोगों के साथ सम्बन्धित है; इसलिए जो परमेश्वर का अनुयायी नहीं है, वह अपने आप ही शैतान का अनुयायी है। इसलिए यदि कोई, विशेषतः परमेश्वर की कोई सन्तान, अर्थात मसीही विश्वासी, यदि अपने प्रेम, लगन, और ध्यान को परमेश्वर के अतिरिक्त किसी अन्य के साथ जो परमेश्वर की ओर से या परमेश्वर के द्वारा नहीं है, बाँटना चाहता है, उस के साथ सम्बन्धित होना चाहता है, तो फिर स्वाभाविक है कि वह या तो शैतान या किसी शैतानी जन के साथ ही होगा। और ऐसे में इस में कोई अचरज की बात नहीं है, वरन साधारण सी बात है कि यह परमेश्वर को न केवल अस्वीकार्य, वरन उसे बुरा लगने वाला होगा; और फिर वह इसी के अनुसार प्रतिक्रिया देगा। यदि मसीही विश्वासी परमेश्वर की चेतावनियों और डाँट-फटकार से नहीं संभालेगा और सुधरेगा, पूरे मन से परमेश्वर की ओर लौटकर नहीं आएगा, तो फिर उसे लौटा लाने के लिए परमेश्वर को उसके प्रति कठोर होना पड़ेगा, कि वह विश्वासी लौट कर आ जाए; लेकिन परमेश्वर उसे बुराई या गलती में बने नहीं रहने देगा।

    इसे एक पारिवारिक स्थिति के समान देखिए और समझिए, जहाँ जब कोई बच्चा माता-पिता के प्रति अनाज्ञाकारी रहता है, सुधरता नहीं है, उसे दिए गए निर्देशों के विपरीत व्यवहार में बना ही रहता है और उसके कारण परिवार का नाम खराब हो रहा है। यदि ऐसी कोई सन्तान माता-पिता की मौखिक डाँट-फटकार से नहीं मानता है, तब अपनी सन्तान के प्रति उनके प्रेम के कारण, और उसे भविष्य में किसी हानि में पड़ने से बचाने के लिए, माता-पिता को कठोरता से काम लेना पड़ता है, उसकी ताड़ना करनी पड़ती है। उनका ताड़ना करना, उस बच्चे के प्रति उनके प्रेम, उस पर उनके अधिकार का सूचक है, और बच्चे को वापस परिवार की सुरक्षा और देखभाल में लौटा लाने के लिए है, जैसा कि इब्रानियों 12:5-11 में भी लिखा है। इसी प्रकार से, परमेश्वर का जलन रखना वह नकारात्मक, बुराई वाली, जलन रखने की साँसारिक प्रवृत्ति नहीं है, वरन यह प्रेम रखने और देखभाल करने की एक अभिव्यक्ति है, ताकि वह अपने लोगों को शैतान की युक्तियों से सुरक्षित रखे। अब हम समझ सकते हैं कि बाइबल में परमेश्वर के संदर्भ में वाक्यांश “जलन रखने” से अभिप्राय है परमेश्वर का अपनी अमूल्य संपत्ति या अधिकार के प्रति, उसकी सन्तानों के प्रति सुरक्षा रखने और देखभाल करने के लिए उभारा जाना, और परमेश्वर की भटकी हुई सन्तान को वापस परमेश्वर के पास लौटा लाने के लिए जो भी आवश्यक हो वह करना। चाहे ऐसा करना अभी उस सन्तान को कठोर और दुखदायी लगे, किन्तु अनन्तकालीन दृष्टिकोण से यह करना आवश्यक और लाभकारी है (1 कुरिन्थियों 5:5)।

    इसलिए, परमेश्वर का जलन रखना वास्तव में नया-जन्म पाए हुए मसीही विश्वासी को आश्वस्त करता है कि वह परमेश्वर के हाथों में सुरक्षित और सकुशल है; कोई भी उसे परमेश्वर के हाथों में से ले जा नहीं सकता है। यदि आवश्यक होगा तो परमेश्वर अपनी सन्तान के साथ दृढ़ता या कठोरता से भी व्यवहार करेगा, उसकी ताड़ना भी करेगा, किन्तु शैतान को कभी भी उसे अनन्त विनाश में ले जाने नहीं देगा। हमने जो परमेश्वर के विभिन्न गुण, विशेषताएँ, और चरित्र सम्बन्धी बातें देखी हैं और उन पर विचार किया है, वे सभी हमें आश्वस्त करती हैं कि हम निःसंकोच और निश्चिन्त होकर “परमेश्वर पर विश्वास” कर सकते हैं। अगले लेख से हम इब्रानियों 6:1-2 में उल्लेखित आरम्भिक बातों में से तीसरी, “बपतिस्मों” पर विचार करना आरंभ करेंगे।  

    यदि आपने प्रभु की शिष्यता को अभी तक स्वीकार नहीं किया है, तो अपने अनन्त जीवन और स्वर्गीय आशीषों को सुनिश्चित करने के लिए अभी प्रभु यीशु के पक्ष में अपना निर्णय कर लीजिए। जहाँ प्रभु की आज्ञाकारिता है, उसके वचन की बातों का आदर और पालन है, वहाँ प्रभु की आशीष और सुरक्षा भी है। प्रभु यीशु से अपने पापों के लिए क्षमा माँगकर, स्वेच्छा से तथा सच्चे मन से अपने आप को उसकी अधीनता में समर्पित कर दीजिए - उद्धार और स्वर्गीय जीवन का यही एकमात्र मार्ग है। आपको स्वेच्छा और सच्चे मन से प्रभु यीशु मसीह से केवल एक छोटी प्रार्थना करनी है, और साथ ही अपना जीवन उसे पूर्णतः समर्पित करना है। आप यह प्रार्थना और समर्पण कुछ इस प्रकार से भी कर सकते हैं, “प्रभु यीशु, मैं अपने पापों के लिए पश्चातापी हूँ, उनके लिए आप से क्षमा माँगता हूँ। मैं आपका धन्यवाद करता हूँ कि आपने मेरे पापों की क्षमा और समाधान के लिए उन पापों को अपने ऊपर लिया, उनके कारण मेरे स्थान पर क्रूस की मृत्यु सही, गाड़े गए, और मेरे उद्धार के लिए आप तीसरे दिन जी भी उठे, और आज जीवित प्रभु परमेश्वर हैं। कृपया मुझे और मेरे पापों को क्षमा करें, मुझे अपनी शरण में लें, और मुझे अपना शिष्य बना लें। मैं अपना जीवन आप के हाथों में समर्पित करता हूँ।” सच्चे और समर्पित मन से की गई आपकी एक प्रार्थना आपके वर्तमान तथा भविष्य को, इस लोक के और परलोक के जीवन को, अनन्तकाल के लिए स्वर्गीय एवं आशीषित बना देगी।

Faith Towards God - 8

 

    To have a firm faith, every Christian Believer needs to study and learn the whole of God’s Word. There are three kinds of Biblical teachings that are the basic, and provide a stable foundation to build and grow in Christian faith, and every Believer should know them. These three are, teachings related to the gospel, which we have already seen; teachings about the six elementary principles mentioned in Hebrews 6:1-2, of which we are presently learning the second principle, i.e., “Faith Towards God;” and teachings related to Christian behavior, which we will see after completing learning about the elementary principles. To have faith in anyone, we need to know about that person, his attributes, characteristics, and character; the same applies about having faith in God. We have seen that God has left an open invitation for people to come and see that He is good (Psalm 34:8). Learning about the second elementary principle, i.e., having “Faith Towards God” we are considering God’s the attributes and characteristics, particularly those that are usually not taught or talked about in the churches. But every Christian Believer should know about. When Believers learn those attributes and their implications, they are provided a firm foundation to have Faith Towards God. Today we will be considering another such rarely talked about or taught attribute, i.e., the jealousy of God.

    God’s Word the Bible teaches that God is a jealous God (Exodus 20:5; 34:14; Joshua 24:19). To understand God acting in jealousy, we need to bear in mind another of God’s attributes that God is very possessive of those who are His, and never lets them go or be taken away from His hands at any cost (John 10:28-29). He never ever forsakes them for whatever reason (Hebrews 13:5), and therefore, the Believers never lose their salvation because of their wayward living and disobedience. But God does not condone such unchristian behavior, and for their waywardness, the people of God are chastised by God, even severely if it so required; but God never discards them, casts them away from Himself. Those who are God’s people, they not only are His children, His family, they are His precious possession also. He is very possessive about them. He will chasten them for their being wayward, for compromising with the world, and succumbing to the temptations brought by the devil instead of standing firm in faith, and if it is required, He will even chasten severely - as we see from the history of Israel; but God will never ever let anyone take those who are His, away from Him. Once a child of God, once a part of His family, always, for eternity a child of God and a member of His family. Although the Bible is very clear about it, and there are no examples of anyone ever losing their salvation because of their wayward life, but still, Satan has driven this misconception very firmly into many people’s minds and misled them into believing that salvation can be lost if it is not maintained by good works. The Biblical fact is that the saved person can be, and will be chastened, and may even enter heaven without any rewards because of his wayward life (1 Corinthians 3:13-15), but he will never lose his salvation.

    With this in mind, we can now look at what God’s being jealous means. Our normal tendency is to think of jealousy as a negative trait, as something wrong, since that is how we see and experience this feeling in our day-to-day lives. But that is not how this word has been used for God in the original Greek language, in which the New Testament is written. The word in the Greek language, that has been translated as jealousy in English literally means “to stimulate alongside, i.e., excite to rivalry.” Therefore, to provoke the Lord to jealousy implies to stimulate Him or provoke Him to act out of His possessiveness. The Lord loves His Believers, His children, immeasurably; so much, that He gave His only begotten Son to redeem them and to have them reconciled with Him (John 3:16; Romans 5:1, 11), He lives within them as the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 3:16; 6:19), and has made His angels their ministering spirits (Hebrews 1:14). In return, He expects them to love Him, and Him alone (2 Corinthians 5:15); to not divide their love and affections for Him with others, and not treat Him casually as one of the many whom His people love (Deuteronomy 32:16, 21; Psalm 78:58).

    This becomes clearer and justifiable when we ponder and realize that there are only two ‘powers’ in this universe; one is God (actually, the one and only power), the creator and owner of this universe, and He has His angels. And the other is Satan, the rebellious angel, and his followers. Satan and his followers are all the rivals and enemies of God, who, when their time is completed, will finally be taken away and cast into everlasting hell (Matthew 8:29). There is no other power or source of any power, other than these two, and everyone is either associated with God, or else is automatically associated with God’s enemy and rival, Satan i.e., every person, can either be associated and joined with God, or with Satan and be his follower. So, if anyone, particularly a child of God, i.e., a Christian Believer, desires to share his love and affection, or associate with anyone other than God or anything that is not from God, then he can only be sharing or associating it, with Satan or with someone associated with Satan and satanic things. This quite naturally will not only be unacceptable, but even abhorrent to God; and He will act accordingly. If the Christian Believer does not respond to God’s cautions and admonitions, does not mend his ways and turn back to God whole-heartedly, then God will have to be harsh with him to turn the Believer back to Him; but God will not leave Him in his error or bad behavior.

    Think of it as a family-situation where a child is being disobedient to parents, is not mending his ways, persists in living contrary to the instructions given to him, and is sullying the name of the family because of his life and behavior. If such a child does not listen to verbal cautions and admonitions, from the parents, then out of their love for the child and to safeguard him from future severe harm and harsh consequences, they have to act firmly, and resort to chastising him. Their chastisement is an act of love, is because of their being possessive of him, and to draw the child back into the safety and care of the family. God has said the same in Hebrews 12:5-11. So, the Lord’s jealousy is not the jealousy in the negative and worldly sense, but is an act of His love and care, to keep His people safe from the wiles of the devil. Now we can understand that the term “provoke to jealousy” implies, to be stimulated to act for the protection and care of someone who is God’s precious possession, the children of God, and to do whatever needs to be done to bring God’s wayward child back into God’s fold. Even if it is hurting and painful for God’s child for now, but it is beneficial from the eternal perspective (1 Corinthians 5:5).

    So, God’s jealousy assures every truly Born-Again Christian Believer that he is safe and secure in the hands of God; nothing can take him away from God. If required, God will deal firmly with His child or chastise him, but will never let Satan lead him away into eternal destruction. The various attributes, characteristics, and character related things about God that we have seen and considered assure us that without any doubts or hesitation, we can have “Faith Towards God.” In the next article we will begin considering the third elementary principle mentioned in Hebrews 6:1-2, i.e., “Baptisms”.

    If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Repenting of your sins, and asking the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely, surrendering yourself to Him - is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. You only have to say a short but sincere prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ willingly and with a penitent heart, and at the same time completely commit and submit your life to Him. You can also make this prayer and submission in words something like, “Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sins and repent of them. I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself, paying for them through your life.  Because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, and you rose again from the grave on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God and have freely provided to me the forgiveness, and redemption from my sins, through faith in you. Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.
