परमेश्वर के वचन से उचित व्यवहार – 8

 

प्रेरित पौलुस से परमेश्वर के वचन का उपयोग करने, उससे व्यवहार करना सीखने के लिए हम 1 कुरिन्थियों 1:17 से सीखने के बाद अब 1 कुरिन्थियों 2:4-5 को देख रहे हैं। हम ने पिछले लेख में देखा था कि यद्यपि पौलुस बड़ी प्रभावी पत्रियाँ लिख सकता था, लेकिन वह एक प्रभावी वक्ता के रूप में नहीं जाना जाता था (2 कुरिन्थियों 10:1, 10)। लेकिन इसके कारण उसने अपने आप को कभी किसी रीति से सीमित नहीं समझा, और उसकी इस अयोग्यता के बावजूद, परमेश्वर ने उसे बहुत सामर्थी रीति से उपयोग किया, क्योंकि वह हमेशा ही परमेश्वर को पूर्णतः समर्पित और आज्ञाकारी रहता था। परमेश्वर के वचन का उपयोग करने, उस से व्यवहार करने में हमेशा ही पौलुस का उद्देश्य कभी भी अपने लिए कोई महिमा अथवा प्रशंसा प्राप्त करना नहीं होता था, किन्तु परमेश्वर द्वारा उसे दी गई सेवकाई द्वारा हमेशा सारी महिमा परमेश्वर ही को देना होता था। पिछले लेख में हमने पौलुस द्वारा अपनी सेवकाई में अपनी ही बुद्धि के उपयोग के बारे में देखना आरम्भ किया था, और आज उसे ही ज़ारी रखेंगे।

यद्यपि पौलुस यहूदियों के पवित्रशास्त्र, हमारे पुराने नियम, को बहुत अच्छे से जानता था, किन्तु उसके श्रोता, गैर-यहूदी या अन्यजाति लोग थे (गलातियों 2:7), जिनके बीच परमेश्वर ने उसे सेवकाई सौंपी थी, और वे अन्यजाति लोग उस यहूदी पवित्रशास्त्र को नहीं जानते थे। इसलिए पौलुस के पास कोई तरीका ही नहीं था कि वह उनके मध्य पवित्रशास्त्र के बारे में अपने ज्ञान, बुद्धि, और समझ को प्रदर्शित कर सके। उन लोगों को उस सुसमाचार, उस सन्देश को बताने और समझाने के लिए, जो सन्देश परमेश्वर उन लोगों को देना चाहता था, पौलुस को पहले उसे परमेश्वर से प्राप्त करना होता था, और तब ही वह उसे उन लोगों को देने पाता था, और वह यही किया करता था (1 कुरिन्थियों 11:23; 1 थिस्सलुनीकियों 4:1-2)। इस तरह, हम देखते हैं कि परमेश्वर ने पौलुस और उसकी सेवकाई के लिए बातों को इस तरह से नियोजित किया था, कि शैतान किसी भी प्रकार से उसे अपने चंगुल में फंसा कर, उसे और उस के ज्ञान, बुद्धि, समझ को, औरों के लिए तथा स्वयं उसके लिए भी ठोकर का कारण नहीं बना सकता था। और पौलुस इसके बारे में बहुत स्पष्ट था, वह खुल कर मान लेता है कि उसका प्रचार उसके अपने किसी ज्ञान-बुद्धि अथवा योग्यता के द्वारा नहीं था (1 कुरिन्थियों 2:1, 4)। क्योंकि पौलुस केवल वही प्रचार करता और सिखाता था जो उसे प्रभु से प्राप्त होता था, इसी लिए वह बड़े आधिकारिक तौर से, निःसंकोच होकर, अपने सन्देश को सभी को दे सकता था; बिना कभी भी किसी के भी द्वारा किसी भी प्रकार से गलत ठहराए जाने, या किसी त्रुटि में पड़े होने के आरोप में फँसने के भय के; और न ही कोई उस पर वचन के दुरुपयोग का कभी दोष लगा सकता था।

पौलुस ने इसी बात को कुछ भिन्न शब्दों में, इससे अगले अध्याय में, अर्थात 1 कुरिन्थियों 3:5-8 में भी कहा; यहाँ पर वह परमेश्वर के वचन के बोए जाने को बताने के लिए, बीज बोने के रूपक का उपयोग करता है। यहाँ, वह पद 5 में कहता है कि उसे और अपुल्लोस को बीज, अर्थात वह वचन जो उन्हें बोना था, वह परमेश्वर ही ने दिया; फिर पद 6 में वह कहता है कि परमेश्वर ने जो दिया था, उसे उसने बोया, और अपुल्लोस ने उसे सींचा, लेकिन उसे बढ़ाने वाला, अर्थात, उसे उगाने और उसमें फल लाने वाला परमेश्वर ही था। इसीलिए, वह पद 7-8 में सारा श्रेय परमेश्वर को देता है, अपने लिए अथवा अपने सहकर्मी अपुल्लोस के लेने के लिए कुछ भी नहीं रख छोड़ता है।

कुरिन्थुस की मण्डली को लिखी अपनी दूसरी पत्री के समापन की ओर आते हुए, 2 कुरिन्थियों 9:10 में, पौलुस इसी रूपक का उपयोग करते हुए परमेश्वर को “बोने वाले को बीज” देने वाला बताता है। अर्थात, परमेश्वर ही है जो बीज, यानी कि अपना वचन उन्हें देता है जो सेवकों के समान उसे समर्पित हो जाते हैं। अर्थात्, उन्हें जो अपने ही गढ़े हुए ‘बीजों’ को बोने और सींचने वाले नहीं, वरन परमेश्वर के द्वारा दिए गए ‘बीज’ बोने और सींचने वाले होते हैं। और तब ही परमेश्वर अपने दिये हुए बीज को बढ़ाता है, अर्थात अपने दिये हुए बीज से फल और फसल देता है; जो मनुष्य की बुद्धि और ज्ञान के ‘बीज’ के साथ हो पाना संभव नहीं है। यह सम्पूर्ण प्रक्रिया, बीज प्राप्त करने से लेकर फसल प्राप्त करने तक, पूर्णतः परमेश्वर पर ही निर्भर है।

 

यदि कोई प्रभु के लिए एक पूर्णतः समर्पित और केवल उसी का आज्ञाकारी सेवक, जैसा कि पौलुस था, बनने के लिए तैयार है, तो परमेश्वर न केवल उन्हें उपयुक्त संसाधन, अर्थात समय, स्थान, और आवश्यकता के अनुसार लोगों के लिए उपयुक्त वचन उपलब्ध करवाएगा, जिसे उन लोगों के मध्य दिए जाने की आवश्यकता है, और सेवकों से उन संसाधनों का सही उपयोग भी करवाएगा, वरन उनके प्रयासों पर आशीष और उनके कार्य के लिए प्रतिफल भी देगा (1 कुरिन्थियों 3:8)। अब, जब सभी कुछ परमेश्वर से ही है, और लाभांश स्वर्गीय तथा अनन्तकालीन हैं, तो फिर परमेश्वर के वचन की सेवकाई के इस कार्य में नश्वर मानवीय सोच, ज्ञान, और बुद्धि की कोई आवश्यकता या महत्व रह ही नहीं जाता है।

इसलिए परमेश्वर के वचन के उपयोग और उसके साथ व्यवहार के सर्वोत्तम परिणामों के लिए, हमें वही और वैसा ही करना चाहिए जैसा पौलुस ने किया – परमेश्वर से पूछें, उसी पर निर्भर रहें, उसे आप को बता लेने दें कि कहाँ पर, कब, कैसे, और क्या कहना है। तब परमेश्वर का वचन कभी निष्फल नहीं जाएगा, वरन जिस काम के लिए भेजा गया है उसे करेगा (यशायाह 55:11); और अपने समय तथा तरीके से परमेश्वर न केवल आशीष देगा, वरन अनन्तकालीन प्रतिफल भी देगा। किन्तु यदि हम कार्यों को अपनी समझ और बुद्धि से, अपने तरीकों से करने लग जाएँगे, तो वह व्यर्थ या निष्फल परिश्रम ठहरेगा जो आशीष और प्रतिफल नहीं बल्कि परेशानियाँ लाएगा।

 

अगले लेख में हम उन विषयों को देखेंगे जिन्हें पौलुस ने अपनी सेवकाई में, वचन के उपयोग तथा उस के साथ व्यवहार के लिए प्रयोग किया।

यदि आपने प्रभु की शिष्यता को अभी तक स्वीकार नहीं किया है, तो अपने अनन्त जीवन और स्वर्गीय आशीषों को सुनिश्चित करने के लिए अभी प्रभु यीशु के पक्ष में अपना निर्णय कर लीजिए। जहाँ प्रभु की आज्ञाकारिता है, उसके वचन की बातों का आदर और पालन है, वहाँ प्रभु की आशीष और सुरक्षा भी है। स्वेच्छा से अपने पापों के लिये पश्चाताप करके, प्रभु यीशु से अपने पापों के लिए क्षमा माँगकर, स्वेच्छा से तथा सच्चे मन से अपने आप को उसकी अधीनता में समर्पित कर दीजिए - उद्धार और स्वर्गीय जीवन का यही एकमात्र मार्ग है। आपको स्वेच्छा और सच्चे मन से प्रभु यीशु मसीह से केवल एक छोटी प्रार्थना करनी है, और साथ ही अपना जीवन उसे पूर्णतः समर्पित करना है। आप यह प्रार्थना और समर्पण कुछ इस प्रकार से भी कर सकते हैं, “प्रभु यीशु, मैं अपने पापों के लिए पश्चातापी हूँ, उनके लिए आप से क्षमा माँगता हूँ। मैं आपका धन्यवाद करता हूँ कि आपने मेरे पापों की क्षमा और समाधान के लिए उन पापों को अपने ऊपर लिया, उनके कारण मेरे स्थान पर क्रूस की मृत्यु सही, गाड़े गए, और मेरे उद्धार के लिए आप तीसरे दिन जी भी उठे, और आज जीवित प्रभु परमेश्वर हैं। कृपया मुझे और मेरे पापों को क्षमा करें, मुझे अपनी शरण में लें, और मुझे अपना शिष्य बना लें। मैं अपना जीवन आप के हाथों में समर्पित करता हूँ।” सच्चे और समर्पित मन से की गई आपकी एक प्रार्थना आपके वर्तमान तथा भविष्य को, इस लोक के और परलोक के जीवन को, अनन्तकाल के लिए स्वर्गीय एवं आशीषित बना देगी।

Appropriately Handling God’s Word – 8

 

In learning from the Apostle Paul about utilizing and handling God’s Word, having learnt from 1 Corinthians 1:17, we are now considering 1 Corinthians 2:4-5. We saw in the previous article that though Paul could write impressive letters, yet he was not known to be an impressive speaker (2 Corinthians 10:1, 10). But he never felt handicapped because of this, and despite this inability, God used him mightily, since he always remained fully surrendered and obedient to God. Paul’s aim in utilizing and handling God’s Word was never to gain any glory or appreciation for himself, but to always give God all the glory through his ministry that had been entrusted to him by God. We had started to consider Paul's use of his own wisdom in the previous article, and will carry on with it today.

Though Paul was very well versed in the Scriptures of the Jews, i.e., our Old Testament, but his audience were the Gentiles (Galatians 2:7), amongst whom God had appointed him his ministry; and they did not know the Jewish Scriptures. Therefore, Paul could not in any way show-off his knowledge and his wisdom of those Scriptures to them. To convey and make them understand the gospel, the message that God wanted him to deliver to the Gentiles, Paul had to first receive it from God, and then pass it on, and that is what he used to do (1 Corinthians 11:23; 1 Thessalonians 4:1-2). Hence, we see that God had so arranged things for Paul and his ministry, that there was no way that Satan could manipulate and turn his knowledge, wisdom, and understanding into becoming a stumbling block for him and others. And Paul is very frank about this, he openly admits that his preaching was not through any of his own wisdom or abilities (1 Corinthians 2:1, 4). Because Paul preached and taught only what he received from the Lord, therefore, he could very authoritatively and unhesitatingly present his message to everyone; without fear of ever being proven wrong, or accused of being in error, in any manner; and no one could accuse him of misusing God’s Word in any manner.

Paul says the same in different words, in the next chapter, i.e., in 1 Corinthians 3:5-8, where he uses the analogy of sowing seed to illustrate his sowing God’s Word. Here, in v. 5 he says God gave to him and Apollos, the seed, i.e., the Word they had to sow; then in v. 6, he says that he planted what God had given, and Apollos watered or nurtured that seed, but the increase, i.e., its growing and bringing fruit was from God. Therefore, in v. 7-8 he gives the entire credit to God, keeping nothing for himself or his colleague, Apollos.

Paul uses the same analogy as he concludes his second letter to the Corinthians, in 2 Corinthians 9:10, naming God as the one who “supplies seed to the sower.” So, it is God who provides the seed, i.e., His Word, to those who submit to Him as His laborers, i.e., to those willing to plant and water not their own contrived, but the God given seed provided to them. It is then that God gives the increase from His seed, i.e., the fruit or the harvest through His Word, and not through words of man’s wisdom. The whole process, from receiving the seed to receiving the harvest is totally dependent upon God. 

If one is willing to be a fully surrendered and completely obedient to the Lord kind of laborer, like Paul was, then, God will not only provide the appropriate resources to them, i.e., His appropriate Word for the time, place, and need, of the people amongst whom it has to be used, and have them use His resources appropriately, but will also bless their efforts and eventually reward them for their labor (1 Corinthians 3:8). When everything is from God, and the returns are heavenly and eternal, then there is no need or scope of any temporal human thinking, knowledge, and wisdom in utilizing God’s Word for God’s work.

Therefore, to get the best results for utilizing and handling God’s Word, we need to do it in the manner Paul used to do it – ask God, depend upon Him, let Him tell you what to share, where, when, and how to share it. Then, God’s Word will never go vain but accomplish what it was sent for (Isaiah 55:11); and in His time and manner, God will not only give blessings, but will also give eternal rewards. But if we start doing things our own way, according to our own wisdom, then it will be a vain labor that will create problems instead of any blessings and rewards.

You can also make this prayer and submission in words something like, “Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sins and repent of them. I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself, paying for them through your life.  Because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, and you rose again from the grave on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God and have freely provided to me the forgiveness, and redemption from my sins, through faith in you. Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.

प्रेरित पौलुस के जीवन और उदाहरणों से परमेश्वर के वचन के उपयोग तथा उसके साथ व्यवहार करने को सीखते हुए, हमने पिछले लेख से 1 कुरिन्थियों 2:4-5 से देखना आरम्भ किया है, और साथ ही हमने बहुत संक्षिप्त में पूरे 2 अध्याय को भी देखा था, कि यह पूरा अध्याय परमेश्वर के वचन के साथ व्यवहार के बारे में है। फिर हमने पद 4 को लिया था, और देखा था कि पौलुस इस पद का आरम्भ दो दावे करने के साथ करता है, पहला यह कि पौलुस अपने श्रोताओं पर कभी भी अपनी बुद्धि, या ज्ञान, और/या सेवकाई से मिलने वाले स्तर, प्रतिष्ठा, प्रशंसा, आदि, के बारे में बताने के द्वारा कोई प्रभाव नहीं जमाता था। और दूसरा यह कि उसकी सेवकाई तथा उसके द्वारा परमेश्वर के वचन का उपयोग, दोनों ही किसी भी रीति से कोई भी महिमा लेने के लिए नहीं, बल्कि परमेश्वर को महिमा देने के उद्देश्य पर केन्द्रित थे। उसके बाद हमने पौलुस के पहले दावे, अपने श्रोताओं पर प्रभाव जमाने के प्रयास न करने, से सम्बन्धित कुछ बातों को देखा था। आज हम इस पद में पौलुस के इसी पहले दावे के बारे में कुछ और आगे देखना ज़ारी रखेंगे।

पद 4 में किया गया पौलुस का दावा, उसने जो इससे पहले के तीन पदों में कहा है, उसका निष्कर्ष है। कुरिन्थुस की मण्डली को सुसमाचार प्रस्तुत करते हुए, उसने उन्हें अपनी वाक्पटुता अथवा प्रभावी शब्दों, शैली, और व्यवहार द्वारा लुभाने का प्रयास नहीं किया; और न ही किसी अन्य रीति से उन्हें सुसमाचार सन्देश को स्वीकार करवाने का प्रयास किया। यह निश्चित करने के लिए कि ऐसा ही हो, इस अध्याय के पहले तीन पदों में वह अपनी उस कार्यविधि की रूपरेखा देता है, जो उसने वास्तव में किया। अर्थात्, उसने क्या नहीं किया, और क्या किया, उन दोनों को ही एक तुलनात्मक रीति से पाठकों के सामने रख दिया, कि किसी को भी कोई भी दुविधा न हो। पौलुस की यह कार्यविधि उस से जो कि संसार की सामान्य रीति, श्रोताओं को प्रभावित करके अपने अनुयायियों को एकत्रित करने के प्रयासों एवं व्यवहार से बिलकुल भिन्न है।

 

पौलुस 2:1 में कहता है कि उसके द्वारा सुसमाचार का दिया जाना न तो वाक्पटुता के साथ था और न ही ज्ञान की उत्तमता के साथ। कलीसियाओं में पौलुस इस बात के लिए जाना जाता था कि यद्यपि वह पत्र तो बहुत अच्छे और प्रभावी लिखता था, लेकिन प्रत्यक्ष में वह एक अच्छा वक्ता नहीं था, बल्कि एक बहुत अप्रभावी वक्ता था (2 कुरिन्थियों 10:1, 10)। लेकिन पौलुस ने कभी इस बात को एक कमज़ोरी के समान न तो देखा, और न ही कभी कमज़ोरी बनने दिया; और न ही कभी इसे सुधारने या बदलने का प्रयास किया। वह जैसा भी था, परमेश्वर के वचन और सन्देश को लोगों के मध्य जिस भी तरह से प्रस्तुत कर सकता था, उसने वह बिना किसी हिचकिचाहट के, बिना अपने आप को अपनी किसी कमज़ोरी के कारण सीमित समझे हुए किया। क्योंकि उसने अपने आप को परमेश्वर को समर्पित कर दिया था, उसकी आज्ञाकारिता में चलता था, परमेश्वर के हाथों में छोड़ दिया था, इसीलिए परमेश्वर ने उसे, जैसा भी वह था, वैसे ही बहुत सामर्थ्य के साथ उपयोग किया, यद्यपि वह एक उत्तम वक्ता नहीं भी था, तब भी। पौलुस तब भी सभी अन्य उत्तम समझे जाने वाले वक्ताओं और वाक्पटुता दिखाने वाले प्रचारकों से बढ़कर परमेश्वर के लिए उपयोगी था, और आज भी है।

दूसरी बात जो पौलुस दोनों, पद 1 और 4 में कहता है, वह है कि उसने परमेश्वर के वचन और सन्देश को देने के लिए अपनी बुद्धि का सहारा नहीं लिया। इसे समझने के लिए, हमें पौलुस और उसकी सेवकाई से सम्बन्धित दो आधारभूत तथ्य, जिन्हें हम पहले भी कुछ बार देख चुके हैं, ध्यान में रखने चाहिए। पहला, दमिश्क के मार्ग पर प्रभु यीशु के साथ साक्षात्कार और उसके जीवन परिवर्तन होने से पहले वह एक बहुत शिक्षित फरीसी था, जिसने अपने समय के सुविख्यात शिक्षक गमलीएल से शिक्षा पाई थी, और उस समय के पवित्र शास्त्र – हमारे आज के पुराने नियम को बहुत अच्छे से जानता था। दूसरा, परमेश्वर ने पौलुस को अन्यजातियों में, तथा पतरस को यहूदियों में सेवकाई के लिए नियुक्त किया था (गलातियों 2:7)। मानवीय समझ और बुद्धि से यह बिलकुल तर्कहीन और मूर्खतापूर्ण लगता है – एक शिक्षित और प्रशिक्षित फरीसी को जो यहूदी पवित्रशास्त्र का अच्छा ज्ञाता है, अन्यजातियों में भेजा जाए; और एक अनपढ़ यहूदी मछुआरे - पतरस (प्रेरितों 4:13) को पढ़े-लिखे यहूदी अगुवों, पवित्रशास्त्र के ज्ञाताओं, और अन्य यहूदियों में भेजा जाए। किन्तु परमेश्वर की बुद्धि-समझ तथा कार्य-विधि के अंतर्गत यह अपने दोनों सेवकों को शैतान की युक्तियों से सुरक्षित बनाए रखने के लिए एक अति-उत्तम कार्यविधि थी। क्योंकि, अब इस स्थित में, दोनों, पौलुस और पतरस को अपने-अपने श्रोताओं को संबोधित करने के लिए अपनी योग्यताओं और बुद्धि पर नहीं बल्कि पूर्णतः परमेश्वर पर ही निर्भर रहना था; और ऐसे में फिर शैतान उन्हें परमेश्वर के वचन के प्रचार के लिए बहका या भरमा नहीं सकता था।

हम इस बात को अगले लेख में और आगे देखेंगे। लेकिन परमेश्वर के वचन से व्यवहार और उसके सन्देश को औरों तक पहुँचाने के बारे में हमने अभी तक जो देखा है, वह है कि हमें कोई उत्तम वक्ता अथवा वाक्पटुता से प्रचार करने वाला होने की कोई आवश्यकता नहीं है; हम जैसे भी हैं, हमारी जो भी योग्यताएं अथवा योग्यताएँ हैं, प्रभु हमें वैसा ही अपने लिए उपयोग कर सकता है । यदि हम प्रभु पर निर्भर रहें और उसके मार्गदर्शन तथा आज्ञाकारिता में अपनी ज़िम्मेदारियों का निर्वाह करें, उसके वचन को सीधे, साधारण, समझने में सरल शब्दों और वाक्यों में प्रस्तुत करें, तो हम प्रभु के लिए बहुत प्रभावी एवं उपयोगी हो सकते हैं। परमेश्वर के वचन का उपयोग और उसके साथ व्यवहार का उद्देश्य अपनी महिमा करवाना नहीं, बल्कि परमेश्वर की महिमा करना है; लोगों पर प्रभाव जमाना नहीं, वरन उन्हें उनके पापों के लिए कायल करके उनके लिए पश्चाताप करने, तथा परमेश्वर से उनके लिए क्षमा मांगने, उद्धार के लिए प्रभु यीशु पर विश्वास करने तक लेकर आना है।

Appropriately Handling God’s Word – 7

 

In learning to utilize and handle God’s Word through the life and example of the Apostle Paul, in the previous article, we began considering 1 Corinthians 2:4-5, and very briefly saw that actually the whole of chapter 2 has to do with handling God’s Word. We then took up verse 4, and saw that Paul makes two assertions at the beginning of the verse, firstly that Paul refrained from impressing his audience by either by his wisdom, or, knowledge, or, by stating the importance, eminence, appreciation, etc., that he attained through his ministry, etc. And secondly, his ministry and handling of God’s Word were centered not on receiving any glory in any manner, but on giving glory to God. We then saw some things related to his first claim, of avoiding impressing his audience in any manner. Today, we will continue with Paul’s first claim in this verse.

Paul’s claim in verse 4 here is the culmination of what he has said in the preceding three verses. In presenting the gospel to the Corinthians, he did not try to persuade them to accept the gospel because of Paul’s eloquence and persuasion through impressive words and mannerisms. To make sure this happened, he outlines his methodology in the first three verses of this chapter, stating what he actually did. Paul’s way of working was much different from the conventional worldly way of trying to impress the audience and gain a following. In other words, he placed before his readers, both, what he did not do, and what he did, as a contrast, so that nobody is left in any confusion.

 

Paul says in 2:1 that his presentation of the gospel was neither with excellence of speech nor through any wisdom. Amongst the Churches, it was known about Paul that though he was great in writing impressive letters, but face-to-face he was not a good speaker, rather, he was a poor speaker (2 Corinthians 10:1, 10). But Paul never saw this as a handicap, nor did he ever allow it to become a handicap; and he never tried to change or improve this either. Whatever he was, however he could present God’s Word and message to the people, he did so without any hesitation, or feeling tied down by any of his inabilities. Since he made himself obedient and surrendered to God, left himself in God’s hands, therefore God used him mightily just as he was, despite his lack of eloquence. Paul was, and still is far more effective for the Lord, than any of the more eloquent speakers.

The second thing, as Paul says in both verses 1 and 4, is that he did not use his wisdom to present the Word and message of God. To understand this, we ought to keep in mind two of the basic facts related to Paul and his ministry, and both have been stated earlier a couple of times. Firstly, before his encounter with the Lord on the road to Damascus and his conversion, he was a learned Pharisee, trained under Gamaliel, a renowned teacher of that time, and very well versed in the Scriptures of that time – our present-day Old Testament. Secondly, God had appointed Paul to serve amongst the Gentiles whereas God appointed Peter to serve amongst the Jews (Galatians 2:7). While to human thinking this seems absolutely illogical and absurd – a learned Pharisee, well versed in the Scriptures, being sent to the Gentiles; and an unlearned Jewish fisherman - Peter (Acts 4:13) being sent to the learned Jewish leaders, to those well versed in the Scriptures, and the other Jews. But in God’s wisdom and way of doing things, it was a master-stroke to keep both His ministers safe from the wiles of the devil. For, both Paul and Peter had to depend upon God to help them address their respective audience, neither could do so through his own wisdom and abilities; and thus, Satan could not mislead them in preaching God’s Word.

We will consider this further in the next article. But what we have learnt so far about handling God’s Word and conveying God’s message to people is that we need not be eloquent, or a good orator to do so; the Lord can use as for His purposes just as we are, whatever be our abilities or inabilities. We can be very effective for the Lord if we just rely on Him and fulfill our responsibilities under the guidance and obedience of God, and present His Word in simple, straightforward, easy to understand words and sentences. The purpose of utilizing and handling God’s Word is not bringing glory to self, but glory to God; not impressing people, but bringing them to the realization and repentance of their sins, asking God’s forgiveness for them and believing in the Lord Jesus for salvation.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Repenting of your sins, and asking the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely, surrendering yourself to Him - is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. You only have to say a short but sincere prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ willingly and with a penitent heart, and at the same time completely commit and submit your life to Him. You can also make this prayer and submission in words something like, “Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sins and repent of them. I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself, paying for them through your life.  Because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, and you rose again from the grave on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God and have freely provided to me the forgiveness, and redemption from my sins, through faith in you. Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.

पौलुस पद 4 का आरम्भ दो दावों के साथ करता है; उसका पहला दावा ऐसा है, जो वर्तमान में परमेश्वर के वचन के प्रचारकों तथा शिक्षकों में से बहुत ही कम, यदि कोई करे भी तो, अपने लिए करेंगे। सामान्यतः, आज की प्रचलित प्रवृत्ति यही है कि वर्तमान के बाइबल के प्रचारक और शिक्षक पहले अपने श्रोताओं या जिन को सन्देश पहुँचाना है, उन्हें, अपनी शिक्षा, योग्यताओं, ज्ञान, और उनकी सेवकाई की लोकप्रियता, आदि के आधार पर प्रभावित करना चाहते हैं। ये सभी प्रचारक और शिक्षक परमेश्वर को मिलने वाली महिमा का पूरा या अधिकांश भाग नहीं तो कम से एक अंश तो अवश्य ही अपने लिए लेना चाहते हैं; और ऐसा करना, परमेश्वर की सेवकाई करने वाले के लिए अनुचित व्यवहार है (यशायाह 42:8; 48:11)।

 

लेकिन पौलुस उसके द्वारा परमेश्वर के वचन के साथ व्यवहार में ऐसी किसी भी संभावना के उत्पन्न होने से पहले ही उसे पूर्णतः समाप्त कर देता है। पौलुस अपने श्रोताओं से अपनी शिक्षा, फरीसी होने के लिए उसके कठोर प्रशिक्षण, पवित्र शास्त्र की उसकी समझ, इन सब बातों के कारण वह जिस स्तर तक पहुँचा था, आदि बातों का कोई उल्लेख नहीं करता है। उस ने केवल एक स्थान पर इनका उल्लेख किया, फिलिप्पियों 3:5 में; और यहाँ पर भी वह बहुत सरसरी रीति से इनका उल्लेख करता है, और वह भी उसकी सेवकाई में उन बातों का व्यर्थ होना दिखाने के लिए (फिलिप्पियों 3:7-8)। उसका दूसरा दावा है किस प्रकार से उसकी सेवकाई और परमेश्वर के वचन के साथ उसका व्यवहार परमेश्वर को महिमा देने पर ही केन्द्रित था, यह दिखाने के द्वारा कि सेवकाई के लिए जो भी सामर्थ्य उसके पास थी वह उसे पूर्णतः परमेश्वर की आत्मा से मिली थी, न कि उसकी अपनी किसी योग्यता से।

हम पौलुस की सेवकाई और परमेश्वर के वचन के साथ उसके व्यवहार से सम्बन्धित उसके इन दोनों दावों को आगे के लेखों में भी देखेंगे।

Appropriately Handling God’s Word – 6

 

We are learning from Paul’s life and examples of how to handle God’s Word. We have seen from 1 Corinthians 1:17, three things about Paul’s ministry that had a bearing on his using God’s Word in an appropriate manner. Firstly, Paul knew what he had not been sent to do; secondly, he knew what he had been sent to do; and thirdly, in fulfilling his God assigned task, he did not add his own wisdom of words into God’s Word given to him, lest the message of the Cross of Christ be made of no effect. Today we will begin to see another aspect of Paul’s use of God’s Word from 1 Corinthians 2:4-5.

These verses, actually, the whole of chapter 2, builds upon the third point of verse 17 of chapter 1, that we saw in the last article – negating the role of human wisdom in handling God’s Word. Chapter 2 makes it clear that God, to those of His people who are obedient to Him and desirous of sincerely serving Him, gives the required power and ability for their ministry, through His Holy Spirit that resides in them. The Holy Spirit teaches them the appropriate part of God’s Word for their ministry (2:12-13). But those who are not actually committed to the Lord, those who are still in their natural carnal state, are unable to receive or understand what God the Holy Spirit has to say (2:14-15). Paul concludes the chapter with a statement implying that only those who have the mind of Christ can know and learn what God wants to say (2:16). The lesson of this chapter, from our context, is that those committed and surrendered to the Lord, sincerely desirous of serving God the way He wants them to serve Him, will also be given the appropriate Word and taught how to use it, by God the Holy Spirit. Therefore, to appropriately handle God’s Word, the preliminary condition is being committed and surrendered to God, and being willing to sincerely serve Him the way He wants them to do it. With this in mind, we will consider 1 Corinthians 2:4-5.

Paul begins verse 4 by making two claims; his first claim is one that very few, if any, of the present-day preachers and teachers of God’s Word would like to make about themselves. Usually, the prevalent tendency of the current preachers and teachers of God’s Word is to first try to impress the audience, or the recipients of their message, by their education, qualifications, their knowledge, and the popularity of their ministry, etc. They like to take at least a slice of the glory that should be given to God, if not a good part, or all of it; and doing this is contrary to the teachings of God’s Word and improper for a minister of God (Isaiah 42:8; 48:11). 

But Paul, straightaway cuts off any possibility of this happening in his handling of God’s Word. Paul does not mention to his audience his education, his rigorous training as a Pharisee, his understanding of the Scriptures, and the stature he had gained because of all this. The only place he refers to this is in Philippians 3:5; there too he mentions it very briefly, and only to discount it, to show how vain these things were for his ministry (Philippians 3:7-8). His second claim is about how his ministry and his handling of God's Word was centered around giving glory to God, through demonstrating that the power that he had for his ministry was entirely from the Spirit of God, and not because of anything from his side.

We will continue studying further both these claims of Paul about his ministry and handling God’s Word in the subsequent articles.
