परमेश्वर के वचन से उचित व्यवहार – 23

 

पौलुस के जीवन और उदाहरणों से परमेश्वर के वचन के सही उपयोग और उसके साथ उचित व्यवहार को सीखते हुए, पिछले कुछ लेखों से हम 2 कुरिन्थियों 4:2 से देखते आ रहे हैं। इस पद में पौलुस ने अपनी सेवकाई के तीन गुणों तथा साथ ही उद्देश्यों को भी लिखा है। अभी तक हम पौलुस की सेवकाई के उद्देश्यों को, और तीन में से दो गुणों को देख चुके हैं। आज हम इस पद में दिए गए तीसरे गुण, “न परमेश्वर के वचन में मिलावट करते हैं” को देखेंगे।

पौलुस द्वारा यह कहना, उस समय – पहली कलीसिया के समय में, इस बात का संकेत है कि शैतान तब भी कार्यरत था और उसने अपने दूतों को चारों और फैला दिया था, जो गलत बातें और गलत शिक्षाएँ प्रचार करते और सिखाते रहते थे। जैसा कि हमने पिछले लेख में देखा था, इन झूठे प्रचारकों और शिक्षकों में से कुछ तो यह साँसारिक समृद्धि अर्जित करने के लिए, या कलीसिया में अपना एक ओहदा बनाने के लिए करते थे। जबकि अन्य यह लोगों को बहकाने, भरमाने, और उन्हें गलत मार्गों पर डालकर परमेश्वर से दूर ले जाने के लिए करते थे। जबकि उनके द्वारा बहकाए गये लोग इसी भ्रम में पड़े रहते थे कि वे अभी भी परमेश्वर के पीछे चल रहे हैं, उसी की सेवा कर रहे हैं (2 कुरिन्थियों 11:3, 13-15)। जिस शब्द का अनुवाद “मिलावट” किया गया है, मूल यूनानी भाषा में उसके अर्थ ‘बिगाड़ना’ और ‘हेरा-फेरी करना’ भी होते हैं। इसलिए तात्पर्य प्रकट है, परमेश्वर के वचन का दुरुपयोग करना केवल तब ही संभव है जब पहले किसी प्रकार से उसमें कोई मिलावट की जाए, या उसे बिगाड़ दिया जाए, या उसके साथ कोई हेरा-फेरी की जाए। अपने परिशुद्ध स्वरूप में, यदि उसके साथ कोई अनुचित व्यवहार नहीं किया गया है, परमेश्वर का वचन कभी भी किसी को भी पथ-भ्रष्ट नहीं कर सकता है, किसी गलत मार्ग पर नहीं डाल सकता है। इससे पहले की हमारी सम्बन्धित श्रृंखला में हमने विस्तार से उन बातों को देखा था जिनके द्वारा शैतान लोगों को, यहाँ तक कि प्रतिबद्ध मसीही विश्वासियों, परमेश्वर के वचन का प्रचार और शिक्षा देने वालों को भी परमेश्वर के वचन के दुरुपयोग और गलत व्याख्या करने के लिए बहका देता है।

ऐसा करने के दो बहुत सामान्य, किन्तु बहुधा पहचाने न जाने वाले तरीके हैं; एक है परमेश्वर के वचन में मानवीय बुद्धि और कौशल की बातों को मिश्रित करना, जो क्रूस के सन्देश को, सुसमाचार को व्यर्थ कर देता है (1 कुरिन्थियों 1:17)। और दूसरा है वचन को ‘सुधार’ कर उसे और बेहतर दिखाने का प्रयास करना; उसे और अधिक आकर्षक, लुभावना, और स्वीकार करने के लिए सहज बना कर प्रस्तुत करने का प्रयास करना; बजाए जैसा परमेश्वर ने उसे प्रदान किया है उसे वैसे ही उपयोग करना, जैसे कि परमेश्वर ने अपने नबियों से करने के लिए कहा है (निर्गमन 7:2; यिर्मयाह 1:7, 17; 23:28; यहेजकेल 2:7; 3:10-11)। हम मसीही विश्वासियों को शैतान द्वारा बहकाए जाने से बचाए रखने के लिए परमेश्वर ने हमारे अन्दर निवास करने के लिए हमें अपना पवित्र आत्मा दिया है, जो हमारा सहायक है और हमें प्रभु यीशु की बातें सिखाता और स्मरण दिलाता है (यूहन्ना 14:16-17, 26)। जो लोग पवित्र आत्मा के प्रति समर्पित और आज्ञाकारी रहते हैं, वह उन्हें परमेश्वर के वचन को सिखाता और समझाता भी है (1 कुरिन्थियों 2:10-14)। लेकिन फिर उन्हें जा कर उसे जो पवित्र आत्मा ने सिखाया है, उसमें अपनी बुद्धि और समझ की बातें नहीं मिलानी चाहिएँ, और न ही उसे ’बेहतर’ करने का, उसे और अधिक आकर्षक और लुभावना बनाने का, स्वीकार करने में सहज बनाने का प्रयास नहीं करना चाहिए; बल्कि जैसा परमेश्वर ने दिया है, उसे वैसा ही उपयोग करना चाहिए, बजाए इसके कि लिखे हुए से आगे बढ़ें (1 कुरिन्थियों 4:6)।

जैसा हम देख चुके हैं, क्योंकि पौलुस परमेश्वर को पूर्णतः समर्पित और आज्ञाकारी था, इसीलिए वह न केवल परमेश्वर के वचन में मिलावट करने, उसे बिगाड़ने, या उसके साथ हेरा-फेरी करने की प्रवृत्ति से बचकर रह सका, वरन जैसा परमेश्वर ने उसे दिया था, वचन को वैसा ही लोगों तक पहुंचाने में उद्यमी भी बना रहा (1 कुरिन्थियों 11:23; गलातियों 1:11-12; 1 थिस्सलुनीकियों 4:2)। हम मसीही विश्वासियों को, क्योंकि हम सभी परमेश्वर के वचन के साथ व्यवहार करते हैं, और विशेषकर उन्हें जिन्हें वचन की सेवकाई सौंपी गई है, इस खतरे के विषय अवगत और बहुत सावधान रहना चाहिए कि शैतान हम में क्या करने की प्रवृत्ति उकसा सकता है, अर्थात परमेश्वर के वचन में मिलावट करना, उसे बिगाड़ना, और उसके साथ हेरा-फेरी करना। क्योंकि शैतान की इस चाल में गिर जाने का अर्थ है हमने कहीं, किसी रीति से, सँसार और शैतान के साथ समझौता कर लिया है, शैतान को हमारे जीवन में होकर काम करने का अवसर प्रदान कर दिया है। इसका परिणाम न केवल हमारी सेवकाई का व्यर्थ और निष्फल हो जाना, बल्कि साथ ही हमारा परमेश्वर के वचन का दुरुपयोग करने का दोषी हो जाना भी होता है। जैसा पौलुस के साथ था, वैसा ही हमारे साथ भी होना चाहिए, हमें परमेश्वर के वचन में कभी कोई मिलावट नहीं करनी चाहिए; अनजाने में भी नहीं; क्योंकि अनजाने में भी ऐसा कर देना इस बात का संकेत है कि हम किसी प्रकार से परमेश्वर के मार्गों से भटक गए हैं, और किसी बात में शैतान की युक्तियों में फँस गए हैं।

अगले लेख में हम 1 थिस्सलुनीकियों 2:5 से पौलुस द्वारा परमेश्वर के वचन के साथ व्यवहार के बारे में एक और बात, ‘लल्लोपत्तो’ की, यानी ‘चापलूसी’ की बातें कभी नहीं करने के बारे में देखेंगे। 

यदि आपने प्रभु की शिष्यता को अभी तक स्वीकार नहीं किया है, तो अपने अनन्त जीवन और स्वर्गीय आशीषों को सुनिश्चित करने के लिए अभी प्रभु यीशु के पक्ष में अपना निर्णय कर लीजिए। जहाँ प्रभु की आज्ञाकारिता है, उसके वचन की बातों का आदर और पालन है, वहाँ प्रभु की आशीष और सुरक्षा भी है। स्वेच्छा से अपने पापों के लिये पश्चाताप करके, प्रभु यीशु से अपने पापों के लिए क्षमा माँगकर, स्वेच्छा से तथा सच्चे मन से अपने आप को उसकी अधीनता में समर्पित कर दीजिए - उद्धार और स्वर्गीय जीवन का यही एकमात्र मार्ग है। आपको स्वेच्छा और सच्चे मन से प्रभु यीशु मसीह से केवल एक छोटी प्रार्थना करनी है, और साथ ही अपना जीवन उसे पूर्णतः समर्पित करना है। आप यह प्रार्थना और समर्पण कुछ इस प्रकार से भी कर सकते हैं, “प्रभु यीशु, मैं अपने पापों के लिए पश्चातापी हूँ, उनके लिए आप से क्षमा माँगता हूँ। मैं आपका धन्यवाद करता हूँ कि आपने मेरे पापों की क्षमा और समाधान के लिए उन पापों को अपने ऊपर लिया, उनके कारण मेरे स्थान पर क्रूस की मृत्यु सही, गाड़े गए, और मेरे उद्धार के लिए आप तीसरे दिन जी भी उठे, और आज जीवित प्रभु परमेश्वर हैं। कृपया मुझे और मेरे पापों को क्षमा करें, मुझे अपनी शरण में लें, और मुझे अपना शिष्य बना लें। मैं अपना जीवन आप के हाथों में समर्पित करता हूँ।” सच्चे और समर्पित मन से की गई आपकी एक प्रार्थना आपके वर्तमान तथा भविष्य को, इस लोक के और परलोक के जीवन को, अनन्तकाल के लिए स्वर्गीय एवं आशीषित बना देगी।

Appropriately Handling God’s Word – 23

 

For learning the appropriate way to utilize and handle God’s Word from the life and example of Paul, for the past few articles we have been considering 2 Corinthians 4:2, where Paul has mentioned three characteristics, and the purpose of his ministry. So, far we have considered the purposes of his ministry, and two out of the three characteristics of his ministry. Today we will consider the third characteristic that Paul has mentioned here in this verse, i.e., “handling the word of God deceitfully.”

For Paul to have said this, at that time – i.e., the time of the first Church, is an indicator that Satan was already at work, and had spread around his agents, who were preaching and teaching wrong things. As we have seen in the preceding articles, some of these false preachers and teachers did this to gain worldly prosperity, or to acquire a status amongst the Christian Believers. While others did it to misguide and put people on the wrong path, leading them away from God. Those who had been misguided by them, would continue to remain under the false impression that they are following or serving God (2 Corinthians 11:3, 13-15). The word translated “deceitfully”, in the original Greek language, means ‘to adulterate, distort, or falsify.’ Therefore, the implication is evident, God’s Word can only be misused, if it is first somehow adulterated, or distorted, or falsified. In its pure unadulterated form, it will not misguide anyone; it will never put anyone on the wrong path. In our preceding, related series, we have seen in detail the various ways through which Satan causes people, even the committed Christian Believers, the preachers and teachers of God’s Word, to mishandle and misinterpret the Word of God.

Of the two very common but often unrealized ways of doing this, one is adding things human wisdom and ingenuity to God’s Word, which renders the message of the Cross, i.e., the gospel, ineffective (1 Corinthians 1:17)। And the second is to try to embellish it i.e., improve upon it, or make it appear more attractive and appealing, or more convenient; instead of using it in just the way it has been given by God, and as God had instructed His prophets to do (Exodus 7:2; Jeremiah 1:7,17; 23:28; Ezekiel 2:7; 3:10-11). To help us Christian Believers stay safe from being misled by Satan, God has given us His Holy Spirit to reside in us as our Helper, and to teach and remind us the things taught by the Lord Jesus (John 14:16-17, 26). Those who stay obedient and submissive to the Holy Spirit, He teaches God’s Word to them and helps them understand it (1 Corinthians 2:10-14). But then, they should not go and adulterate what the Holy Spirit has taught them with things of their own wisdom and understanding, nor try to improve upon it, or make it appear more attractive and appealing, or more convenient; but utilize it just the way it has been taught and given to them, instead of going beyond what has been written (1 Corinthians 4:6).

As we have seen, since Paul was fully submitted and obedient to God, therefore, he could not only stay safe from the tendency to adulterate, distort, or falsify God’s Word, but also be diligent in presenting it as it had been given to him (1 Corinthians 11:23; Galatians 1:11-12; 1 Thessalonians 4:2). For Christian Believers, since we all handle God’s Word, and particularly those who have been given the ministry of utilizing God’s Word, it is essential to remain aware of this danger, of this tendency that Satan often induces in us, i.e., of adulterating, distorting, or falsifying God’s Word. Since falling for this satanic ploy indicates that somehow, in some way, we have compromised with the world and Satan, and have allowed him to work in and through our lives. This will not only render our ministry ineffective and unfruitful, but will also make us guilty of mishandling God’s Word. As it was for Paul, so should it be for us, that we should never use God’s Word “deceitfully”, not even inadvertently; since even the inadvertent misuse on our part indicates that somehow, we have deviated from God’s ways, and in something have fallen for Satan’s ploys.

In the next article we will consider another aspect of Paul’s handling of God's Word from 1 Thessalonians 2:5, i.e., his never using any flattering words.

 

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Repenting of your sins, and asking the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely, surrendering yourself to Him - is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. You only have to say a short but sincere prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ willingly and with a penitent heart, and at the same time completely commit and submit your life to Him. You can also make this prayer and submission in words something like, “Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sins and repent of them. I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself, paying for them through your life.  Because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, and you rose again from the grave on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God and have freely provided to me the forgiveness, and redemption from my sins, through faith in you. Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.

पहला गुण मुख्यतः पौलुस के अतीत, उसके प्रभु यीशु में विश्वास में आने से पूर्व के जीवन के बारे में था। हमने देखा था कि प्रभु यीशु में विश्वास में आने से पहले वह अपनी कुछ बातों और व्यवहार को अपनी धार्मिकता का व्यवहार समझता था’। वह उन बातों पर घमण्ड करता था जिन्हें उसने अपनी शिक्षा और प्रशिक्षण के समय मनुष्यों से, अपने गुरुओं से सीखा था; और बड़ी निष्ठा से उनका पालन किया करता था। उस समय उन्हें वह अपने लिये सद्गुण की, और परमेश्वर के प्रति भक्ति को दिखाने की बातें समझता था। परन्तु प्रभु में विश्वास में आने के बाद, और परमेश्वर से वचन की सही समझ और फिर दर्शनों को पा लेने के बाद, उसका दृष्टिकोण बिल्कुल बदल गया। मनुष्यों की शिक्षाओं पर आधारित दृष्टिकोण को बनाए रखने की बजाए, परमेश्वर और उसके वचन के सही दृष्टिकोण में आने के बाद, वह उन्हीं बातों को “कूड़ा” समझने लगा (फिलिप्पियों 3:7-8)। अब वही बातें उसके लिये लज्जा का कारण थीं; उनके कारण वह अपने आप को संसार का सबसे बड़ा पापी (1 तीमुथियुस 1:15), और प्रेरितों में सबसे छोटा, बल्कि प्रेरित कहलाने के भी अयोग्य समझने लगा (1 कुरिन्थियों 15:8-9)। और इसी कारण उसने अपनी लज्जा कि उन पुरानी बातों को पूर्णतः त्याग दिया, उनसे दूर हो गया। प्रभु और उसके वचन के साथ सही रहने के लिये उसने अपने पूर्व साथियों के बैर और घोर विरोध को भी स्वीकार कर लिया, परन्तु परमेश्वर और उसके वचन से जीवन भर कोई समझौता नहीं किया। उसने अपने जीवन का उद्देश्य मनुष्यों की बातों और विचारों की परवाह किये बगैर, परमेश्वर को प्रसन्न रखना बना लिया (2 कुरिन्थियों 5:9; गलातियों 1:10)।

 

इसके बाद, 2 कुरिन्थियों 4:2 में दिए गये उसके दूसरे और तीसरे गुण उसके जीवन, जैसा जीवन वह तब के लोगों के मध्य जीवन जीता था, और उसकी सेवकाई के बारे में हैं। दूसरे गुण में, पौलुस कहता है कि वह ‘चतुराई से नहीं चलता था।’ अर्थात, वह परमेश्वर के वचन की अपनी सेवकाई को अपनी स्वार्थ-सिद्धि के लिए कदापि उपयोग नहीं करता था; अर्थात् वह पाखण्डी जीवन नहीं जीता था। उसके इस दावे की पुष्टि इस तथ्य से है कि परमेश्वर की सेवा के नाम से पौलुस ने न तो साँसारिक ओहदे या वस्तुओं का कभी कोई लालच किया, और न ही उनके लिए कोई कार्य किया (प्रेरितों 20:33; 1 थिस्सलुनीकियों 1:5; 2:5, 7; 1 थिस्सलुनीकियों 3:7)। इसके विपरीत, अपनी सेवकाई को करते हुए, साथ ही पौलुस अपने जीवन यापन के लिए भी कार्य करता था, कभी किसी पर अपनी आवश्यकताओं के लिए निर्भर नहीं रहा; और अपनी कमाई में से औरों की भी सहायता करता था (प्रेरितों 20:34; 1 कुरिन्थियों 4:12; 1 थिस्सलुनीकियों 2:9)। उसने तो जिन कलीसियाओं में वह सेवा करता था, उनसे कभी वह भी नहीं माँगा जो उसका उपयुक्त बनता था (1 कुरिन्थियों 9:14-15)।

इसकी तुलना में, उस प्राथमिक कलीसिया के समय में ही, ऐसे लोग खड़े हो चुके थे जो परमेश्वर के वचन के प्रचार और शिक्षा को व्यक्तिगत लाभ के लिए उपयोग कर रहे थे (रोमियों 16:18; फिलिप्पियों 3:19), जिसकी पौलुस ने भर्त्सना की। पौलुस ने तिमुथियुस को भी सावधान किया कि, “जो समझते हैं कि भक्ति कमाई का द्वार है” (1 तिमुथियुस 3:19), उन से दूर रहे; तथा तीतुस को निर्देश दिए कि उनके मुँह बंद किए जाने चाहिएँ जो “लोग नीच कमाई के लिये अनुचित बातें सिखा कर घर के घर बिगाड़ देते हैं” (तीतुस 1:11)। पौलुस ने कुरिन्थुस के विश्वासियों को यह स्मरण दिलाया कि वह परमेश्वर के वचन को “बेचता” नहीं था (2 कुरिन्थियों 2:17; इस पद में हिन्दी में जिस शब्द का अनुवाद “मिलावट” या “हेरा-फेरी” किया गया है, मूल यूनानी भाषा के उस शब्द का शब्दार्थ है बेचना, अथवा लाभ के लिए उपयोग करना)। और इफिसुस के मसीही विश्वासियों से अपनी अंतिम विदाई लेते हुए पौलुस उनके सामने एक आदर्श जीवन जीने का दावा कर सका (प्रेरितों 20:18-19)। पौलुस का जीवन सभी के सामने एक ‘खुली-किताब’ था, चाहे वे उसके विरोधी हों अथवा समर्थक, कभी भी कोई भी उस पर साँसारिक वस्तुओं और बातों का लालच करने, उनकी प्राप्ति के लिए अनुचित उद्देश्य और मार्ग रखने, या उन्हें प्राप्त करने के लिए कुछ गलत करने का आरोप नहीं लगा सका। यहाँ तक कि, सँसार से कूच करने की प्रतीक्षा करते हुए, वह बड़े भरोसे के साथ यह कह सका कि जब वह स्वर्ग पहुंचेगा, तो प्रभु के द्वारा उसे ‘धर्म का मुकुट’ दिया जाएगा (2 तीमुथियुस 4:8)।

क्योंकि वह सँसार और सँसार के बातों तथा वस्तुओं से विरक्ति का जीवन जीता था, प्रभु के प्रति पूर्णतः समर्पित, आज्ञाकारी, और प्रतिबद्ध था, किसी भी भौतिक वस्तु या लाभ की लालसा अथवा लालच नहीं करता था, और क्योंकि उसने अपने आत्मिक स्तर एवं अधिकार का कभी भी अपने व्यक्तिगत लाभ के लिए उपयोग नहीं किया था, इसीलिए परमेश्वर ने उसकी सेवकाई पर आशीष दी और उसे वचन के गूढ़ भेदो के बारे में ऐसी अन्तर्दृष्टि प्रदान की, जैसी किसी और को कभी नहीं मिली थी; और प्रेरित पतरस ने भी यह बात कही (2 पतरस 3:15-16)।

यह वर्तमान में देखे जाने वाले व्यवहार से एक वास्तविक किन्तु अप्रिय तुलना प्रस्तुत करता है। वर्तमान में लोग प्रभु की सेवकाई को न केवल साँसारिक वस्तुएँ, लाभ, और समाज में उच्च स्तर अर्जित करने के तरीके के समान उपयोग करते हैं, वरन उसे सही ठहराने के लिए कई गढ़े हुए तर्क भी देते हैं। उन्हें लोगों के साथ, तथा उन्हें ‘प्रभु की सेवकाई’ के लिए धन एवं संसाधन उपलब्ध करवाने वालों के साथ चतुराई से व्यवहार करने में कोई संकोच नहीं होता है, यद्यपि उपलब्ध करवाई गई वस्तुएँ और संसाधन उनके व्यक्तिगत उपयोग के लिए अधिक और प्रभु के कार्य के लिए कम उपयोग की जाती हैं। हो सकता है कि वे इसके बारे में कुछ तर्क दे सकें और अपने किए को सांसारिक आधार पर उचित भी ठहरा सकें; लेकिन वे यह भूल जाते हैं कि परमेश्वर का आँकलन, निर्धारण, और न्याय उसके अपने ही मानकों के अनुसार होगा, न कि उन लोगों के अथवा सँसार के मानकों के आधार पर। और तब उन्हें बहुत शर्मिंदा होना पड़ेगा, भारी हानि उठानी पड़ेगी, ऐसी हानि जो न केवल उनके सँसार में कमाए गए उस अनुचित लाभ से कहीं अधिक होगी, बल्कि जो चिर-स्थाई और अनन्तकाल तक बनी रहेगी। अन्ततः, परमेश्वर के नाम में व्यक्तिगत लाभ के लिए चतुराई से चलना और व्यवहार करना उन्हें कल्पना से बाहर हानिकारक और भारी पड़ेगा।

हमारे लिए पाठ यह है कि परमेश्वर के वचन के साथ उचित व्यवहार करने और उसकी सेवकाई करने के लिए, परमेश्वर के प्रत्येक सेवक को, पौलुस के समान, बिना किसी प्रकार की कोई चतुराई के, एक खुली-किताब जैसा जीवन रखना होगा और परमेश्वर के वचन का व्यक्तिगत लाभ के लिए नहीं वरन्   परमेश्वर के राज्य के लाभ के लिए उपयोग करना होगा। अगले लेख में हम तीसरे गुण को देखेंगे।

यदि आपने प्रभु की शिष्यता को अभी तक स्वीकार नहीं किया है, तो अपने अनन्त जीवन और स्वर्गीय आशीषों को सुनिश्चित करने के लिए अभी प्रभु यीशु के पक्ष में अपना निर्णय कर लीजिए। जहाँ प्रभु की आज्ञाकारिता है, उसके वचन की बातों का आदर और पालन है, वहाँ प्रभु की आशीष और सुरक्षा भी है। स्वेच्छा से अपने पापों के लिये पश्चाताप करके, प्रभु यीशु से अपने पापों के लिए क्षमा माँगकर, स्वेच्छा से तथा सच्चे मन से अपने आप को उसकी अधीनता में समर्पित कर दीजिए - उद्धार और स्वर्गीय जीवन का यही एकमात्र मार्ग है। आपको स्वेच्छा और सच्चे मन से प्रभु यीशु मसीह से केवल एक छोटी प्रार्थना करनी है, और साथ ही अपना जीवन उसे पूर्णतः समर्पित करना है। आप यह प्रार्थना और समर्पण कुछ इस प्रकार से भी कर सकते हैं, “प्रभु यीशु, मैं अपने पापों के लिए पश्चातापी हूँ, उनके लिए आप से क्षमा माँगता हूँ। मैं आपका धन्यवाद करता हूँ कि आपने मेरे पापों की क्षमा और समाधान के लिए उन पापों को अपने ऊपर लिया, उनके कारण मेरे स्थान पर क्रूस की मृत्यु सही, गाड़े गए, और मेरे उद्धार के लिए आप तीसरे दिन जी भी उठे, और आज जीवित प्रभु परमेश्वर हैं। कृपया मुझे और मेरे पापों को क्षमा करें, मुझे अपनी शरण में लें, और मुझे अपना शिष्य बना लें। मैं अपना जीवन आप के हाथों में समर्पित करता हूँ।” सच्चे और समर्पित मन से की गई आपकी एक प्रार्थना आपके वर्तमान तथा भविष्य को, इस लोक के और परलोक के जीवन को, अनन्तकाल के लिए स्वर्गीय एवं आशीषित बना देगी।

Appropriately Handling God’s Word – 22

 

We have seen that in 2 Corinthians 4:2 Paul has stated three characteristics of his ministry of God’s Word, as well as the purpose of his ministry. These three characteristics are, he had renounced the hidden things of shame, he did not walk in craftiness, and he did not handle the Word of God deceitfully. Having already considered the purposes of Paul’s ministry in earlier articles, in the last article we had considered the first characteristic of Paul’s ministry, that he had renounced the hidden things of shame. Today we will carry on and see the second characteristic mentioned in this verse.

The first characteristic mainly pertained to Paul’s former life, i.e., life before his coming to faith in the Lord Jesus. We had seen that before coming into faith in the Lord Jesus, he used to consider some of his attitudes and behavior as his own works of righteousness. He used to take pride in those things which he had learned from men and from his teachers during the time of his education and training; and he used to follow them with great sincerity. At that time, he considered them to be matters of virtue for himself and of showing devotion toward God. But after coming into faith in the Lord, and after receiving the correct understanding of the Word from God and then visions, his perspective changed completely. After coming into the correct perspective about God and His Word, instead of retaining his perspective based on the teachings of men, he began to consider those very things as “rubbish” (Philippians 3:7-8). Now those same things were a cause of shame for him; because of them, he began to consider himself the greatest sinner in the world (1 Timothy 1:15), and the least among the apostles, rather even unworthy to be called an apostle (1 Corinthians 15:8-9). And for this reason, he completely renounced those previous things of shame and totally turned away from them. To remain right with the Lord and His Word, he accepted even the enmity and fierce opposition of his former companions, but he never made any compromise with God and His Word throughout his life. He made it the purpose of his life to please God, without worrying about what men may think or say (2 Corinthians 5:9; Galatians 1:10).

 

After this, in 2 Corinthians 4:2 are given the second and third characteristics, and these pertain to his life, as he lived it; and his ministry as he carried it out while serving amongst the then people. In the second characteristic, Paul says that he ‘did not walk in craftiness.’ Meaning he did not use his ministry of God’s Word as a means to serve his own ends in the garb of serving God; i.e., he did not live a hypocritical life. An affirmation of this claim was that Paul neither ever coveted, nor ever worked for any worldly position or possessions (Acts 20:33; 1 Thessalonians 1:5; 2:5, 7; 2 Thessalonians 3:7). On the contrary, while carrying on with his ministry, Paul also worked for his living, never being dependent on others to provide for his needs; and, out of his earnings he would help others as well (Acts 20:34; 1 Corinthians 4:12; 1 Thessalonians 2:9). He did not even claim what was his due from the Churches where he ministered (1 Corinthians 9:14-15).

In contrast, as early as at that time of the first Church, already people had come up, using the ministry of preaching and teaching God’s Word, as a means of personal gain (Romans 16:18; Philippians 3:19), which Paul denounced. Paul also cautioned Timothy to stay away from those “who suppose that godliness is a means of gain” (1 Timothy 6:5), and instructed Titus that the mouths of those who were “teaching things which they ought not, for the sake of dishonest gain” should be stopped (Titus 1:11). Paul reminded the Corinthian Believers that he did not go about “peddling the Word of God”, as many were doing (2 Corinthians 2:17); and in his final farewell from the Ephesian Believers, he could claim to have an exemplary lifestyle (Acts 20:18-19). Paul’s life was an ‘open book’ before all, whether his detractors or those in his favor, and none could ever accuse him of any covetousness, inappropriate motives, or wrongdoings for acquiring any worldly status or wealth. So, much so, that awaiting his final departure from the world, he remained very confident that when he reaches heaven he will be rewarded with the crown of righteousness by the Lord (2 Timothy 4:8).

Because he lived this life of remaining detached from the things of this world, a life fully surrendered, obedient, and committed to the Lord, not desiring any temporal things or gains, not coveting anything, never ever using his spiritual status or authority for extracting any leverage of any kind for his personal gain, therefore God blessed his ministry and gave him such insights into His Word, that had not been given to anyone else; and even the Apostle Peter acknowledged this (2 Peter 3:15-16).

This is in such stark contrast to what is commonly seen these days, where people blatantly use the Lord’s ministry as a means of acquiring worldly possessions and status, and even justify doing this by various contrived arguments. They have no hesitation in dealing craftily with people and donors, to have them provide for ‘Lord’s ministry’, which actually is more for serving their own selves than for the service of the Lord. While they may be able to argue about it and justify their deeds on worldly grounds. But they forget that God’s assessment, evaluation, and judgment will be according to God’s criteria, not theirs or the worlds. And then they will cut a very sorry figure, and their loss will not only be far more than any gain they may have had from their walking craftily in the name of the Lord in this world, but will also be eternal and permanent. Eventually, walking craftily to gain worldly things will turn out to be unimaginably disastrous for them.

The lesson for us is that to be able to worthily handle and minister God’s Word, like Paul did, a servant of the Lord must live an open life, without any craftiness, and use God’s Word not for personal gains but for the benefit of God’s Kingdom. We will consider the third characteristic in the next article.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Repenting of your sins, and asking the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely, surrendering yourself to Him - is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. You only have to say a short but sincere prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ willingly and with a penitent heart, and at the same time completely commit and submit your life to Him. You can also make this prayer and submission in words something like, “Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sins and repent of them. I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself, paying for them through your life.  Because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, and you rose again from the grave on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God and have freely provided to me the forgiveness, and redemption from my sins, through faith in you. Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.

हम पौलुस के जीवन और उदाहरणों से परमेश्वर के वचन के उपयोग और उस से व्यवहार के बारे में सीखते आ रहे हैं, और हाल ही में हमने इसके लिए 2 कुरिन्थियों 4:1-5 से देखना आरम्भ किया है। पद 1 को देख लेने के बाद, पिछले कुछ लेखों से हमने पद 2 को देखना आरम्भ किया है। हमने पहले यह देखा है कि इस पद में पौलुस अपनी परमेश्वर के वचन की सेवकाई के तीन गुण तथा उस सेवकाई के उद्देश्य बताता है। पिछले लेखों में हम उद्देश्यों को देख चुके हैं, और आज से गुणों के बारे में देखना आरम्भ करेंगे। इस पद में दिए गए पौलुस की सेवकाई के तीन गुण हैं:

• लज्जा के गुप्त कामों को त्यागना

• चतुराई से न चलना

• परमेश्वर के वचन में मिलावट नहीं करना

अपने तथा अपने सह-कर्मियों के बारे में जो पहला गुण पौलुस यहाँ पर लिखता है, वह है, “हम ने लज्ज़ा के गुप्‍त कामों को त्याग दिया।” इस कथन की तुलना उस से कीजिए जो पौलुस ने अपने मसीही विश्वास में आने से पहले के जीवन के सन्दर्भ में अपने बारे में कहा था, जब वह एक बहुत उत्साही फरीसी, पवित्र शास्त्र – जो हमारा पुराना नियम है, का ज्ञानी था और उस के बारे में अपनी ही समझ के अनुसार काम करता था, “पर मैं तो शरीर पर भी भरोसा रख सकता हूं यदि किसी और को शरीर पर भरोसा रखने का विचार हो, तो मैं उस से भी बढ़कर रख सकता हूं। आठवें दिन मेरा खतना हुआ, इस्राएल के वंश, और बिन्यामीन के गोत्र का हूं; इब्रानियों का इब्रानी हूं; व्यवस्था के विषय में यदि कहो तो फरीसी हूं। उत्‍साह के विषय में यदि कहो तो कलीसिया का सताने वाला; और व्यवस्था की धामिर्कता के विषय में यदि कहो तो निर्दोष था” (फिलिप्पियों 3:4-6; साथ ही प्रेरितों 26:4-5 भी देखिए)। हम पौलुस के इस कथन से देखते हैं कि उसकी पृष्ठभूमि और उसकी योग्यताएँ सभी को अच्छे से पता थीं, लोग भली-भाँति जानते थे कि उसकी धार्मिकता के व्यवहार के आधार पर उसमें कुछ कमी नहीं थी, किसी भी बात के लिए उसकी आलोचना नहीं की जा सकती थी।

 

प्रभु यीशु मसीह को अपना उद्धारकर्ता ग्रहण कर लेने के बाद, उसने तुरंत ही प्रभु यीशु के परमेश्वर का पुत्र होने, प्रतिज्ञा किया हुआ मसीहा होने का प्रचार करना आरम्भ कर दिया था (प्रेरितों 9:20, 27, 29), और अब यह बात भी वह उसी पवित्र शास्त्र ही से प्रचार करता था (प्रेरितों 17:2), जिसके आधार पर पहले विरोध करता और सताता था। दूसरे शब्दों में, उसके परिवर्तन से पहले और बाद में, पौलुस के जीवन में ऐसा कुछ भी नहीं था जो लोगों या समाज से छुपा हुआ हो, अनैतिक हो, सामाजिक दृष्टिकोण से अस्वीकार्य अथवा किसी भी रीति से आलोचना के योग्य हो। लेकिन फिर भी  यहाँ 2 कुरिन्थियों 4:2 में, पौलुस अपनी सेवकाई के विषय जो पहला गुण कहता है, वह है कि उसने लज्जा के गुप्त कामों को छोड़ दिया है! पौलुस के अपने विषय इन दोनों परस्पर विरोधाभासी प्रतीत होने वाले कथनों में हम सामंजस्य किस तरह से बैठा सकते हैं?

इस प्रतीत होने वाले विरोधाभास या त्रुटि को समझने और सामंजस्य बैठाने की कुंजी है फिलिप्पियों 3:4 का आरंभिक वाक्य “मैं तो शरीर पर भी भरोसा रख सकता हूँ।” प्रभु में विश्वास में आने और उसे अपना व्यक्तिगत उद्धारकर्ता और प्रभु ग्रहण करने से पहले, पौलुस का उत्साह और कार्य उसके ‘शरीर के कामों’ पर, अर्थात उसकी अपनी योग्यताओं, शिक्षा, पृष्ठभूमि, तथा अन्य मनुष्यों – धार्मिक अगुवों से उसे मिलने वाले समर्थन और पुष्टि पर आधारित थे। जो उसने सीखा था और जो उसे सही लगता था, उसके आधार पर वह वही करता था जो उसे उचित और करने योग्य लगता था, यह समझते और मानते हुए कि उसका किया हुआ परमेश्वर की दृष्टि में भी सही और उसे भी स्वीकार्य होगा। पौलुस ने यह माना है कि उसकी इन उन्मादी उत्साह और अनुचित प्रवृत्तियों ने उसे प्रभु का विरोधी और प्रभु के लोगों को सताने वाला, उनके विरुद्ध क्रोध में पागल सा, निन्दा और अंधेर करने वाला बना दिया था (प्रेरितों 26:9-11; 1 कुरिन्थियों 15:9; फिलिप्पियों 3:6; 1 तीमुथियुस 1:13)। प्रभु यीशु में विश्वास में आने के बाद, उसकी यह अपने ‘शरीर’, अर्थात उसकी अपनी इच्छा और समझ के अनुसार, तथा उसकी अपनी दृष्टि में सही अथवा गलत होने के आधार पर काम करने की मानसिकता तुरन्त बदल गई। वह विनम्र, प्रभु को पूर्णतः समर्पित और वह हर बात के लिये मनुष्यों का नहीं वरन् पूर्णतः प्रभु का आज्ञाकारी बन गया (प्रेरितों 9:5-6; 26:19)। अर्थात्, जो कुछ भी प्रभु कहे केवल वही करने वाला, चाहे उसकी कोई भी कीमत क्यों न हो (प्रेरितों 9:15-16)। यहाँ तक कि उसमें आए इस परिवर्तन के कारण वही धार्मिक अगुवे जो उसका समर्थन करते थे, उसे उपयोग करते थे, अब उसके विरोधी और उसकी जान के दुश्मन बन गये; परन्तु पौलुस न तो उनसे डरा, न सबके सामने सत्य बोलने से हिचकिचाया या कतराया, और न ही वचन के अनुसार सही बात को बताने, सिखाने, प्रचार करने से पीछे हटा (प्रेरितों 26:6, 19-22)।

 

उसके इस पहले के “शरीर में भरोसा रखने”, और उसकी इस प्रवृत्ति के उसके व्यवहार में प्रकट होने के कारण वह अपने आप को सब प्रेरितों में सबसे छोटा, बल्कि प्रेरित कहलाने के भी योग्य भी नहीं समझता था (1 कुरिन्थियों 15:8-9); वरन्, अपने आप को ‘पापियों में सबसे बड़ा’ (1 तीमुथियुस 1:15) कहता था। इस बात पर भी ध्यान दीजिए कि पौलुस का यह घमण्ड, उसका उग्र होना, और इस प्रकार की अन्य सभी बातें उसके अन्दर की उन त्रुटियों का ही बाहरी प्रकटीकरण थीं, जिन्हें लिये हुए वह जीवन जी रहा था। प्रभु यीशु में विश्वास में आने और प्रभु को समर्पित और आज्ञाकारी बनते ही, उसके अन्दर की त्रुटियों के ठीक होते ही, उसके बाहर का व्यवहार, यानी कि अन्दर की त्रुटियों का बाहरी प्रकटीकरण भी स्वतः ही ठीक हो गया। इसीलिए, पौलुस उन्हें “लज्ज़ा के गुप्‍त काम” कहता है - लोगों के सामने वह भला और निर्दोष था। परन्तु अन्दर की उन त्रुटियों ने जो बाहर व्यवहार में समस्याएँ खड़ी करती हैं, उसे स्वयं अपने तथा औरों के लिये भी विकट समस्या बना रखा था। जब उसका ‘छुपा हुआ’ ठीक हुआ, तो उसका ‘प्रकट’ भी ठीक हो गया। 

पौलुस ने मसीह यीशु में विश्वास में आते ही, इन्हीं “लज्ज़ा के गुप्‍त कामों” को तुरन्त ही त्याग दिया। पौलुस ने अपने ‘शरीर में भरोसा’ करने को, अर्थात, अपनी ही समझ और बुद्धि के अनुसार निर्णय लेने, अपनी योग्यताओं और शिक्षा के अनुसार कार्य करने को; मनुष्यों के दर्जे के आधार पर उनका अनुसरण करने, उनकी कही बातों को मान लेने को त्याग दिया। उसने अपने घमण्ड और दूसरों पर हावी होने की जीवन शैली को त्याग दिया; वह विनम्र और धैर्य रखने वाला बन गया, परमेश्वर के अन्य संतानों की कमियों और गलतियों के साथ धैर्य से व्यवहार करने वाला, उनको धीरज के साथ सुधारने वाला बन गया। यदि अन्य विश्वासी उन से रखी गई आशाओं पर पूरे नहीं उतरते थे या प्रभु के पीछे सही रीति से नहीं चलते थे तो अब वह उनके पीछे डंडा लेकर नहीं पड़ता था, न ही उन्हें अपने से दूर करता था, या अपने आप को उन से दूर कर लेता था। वह प्रभु की इच्छा का आज्ञाकारी बन गया, प्रभु से जानने वाला कि क्या कहना है, किस से कहना है, कब और कहाँ पर कहना है, बजाए अपनी सेवकाई को अपनी ही समझ और इच्छा के अनुसार करने वाला। अब वह प्रेम, क्षमा, और मेल-मिलाप का केवल प्रचार नहीं करता था; वरन् सक्रिय होकर विभाजन की दीवारों को खड़ी करने के स्थान पर उन दीवारों को गिराने और व्यावहारिक एक-मनता को लाने के प्रयास किया करता था, केवल उसका प्रचार ही नहीं करता था। 

हम पौलुस से सीखते हैं कि परमेश्वर के वचन के सेवक में यह पहला गुण होना चाहिए – वह अपने शरीर पर किसी भी बात में कोई भी भरोसा नहीं रखे; वरन विनम्र, धीरजवंत, विलम्ब से क्रोध करने वाला, और जो सेवकाई परमेश्वर उस से चाहता है, उसके विषय परमेश्वर पर पूर्ण रीति से निर्भर और आज्ञाकारी रहने वाला हो। पतरस ने भी यही बात 1 पतरस 2:1-2 में कही है, वचन के निर्मल दूध की लालसा रखने और उसके द्वारा बढ़ने के लिए सबसे पहले हर प्रकार का बैर भाव, छल, कपट, डाह, और बदनामी को त्यागना है – पहले एक भीतरी परिवर्तन आना है, और तब यह परिवर्तन बाहर के व्यवहार में प्रकट होगा।

Appropriately Handling God’s Word – 21

 

We have been learning from the examples and life of Paul about utilizing God’s Word and handling it, and of late have started considering 2 Corinthians 4:1-5 for this. Having seen verse 1, we are now on verse 2 for the past few articles. We saw earlier that in this verse, Paul states three characteristics, and the purposes of his ministry of God’s Word. We have seen the purposes in the previous articles, and will look into the characteristics from today. The three characteristics of Paul’s ministry, as given in this verse are:

• Having renounced the hidden things of shame

• Not walking in craftiness

• Not handling the Word of God deceitfully

The first characteristic that Paul states about himself and his co-workers is, “we have renounced the hidden things of shame”. Compare this with what Paul says about himself, in context of his life before coming to faith in Christ, when he lived and functioned as a very zealous Pharisee, learned in the Scriptures – our present-day Old Testament, doing things according to his own understanding of the Scriptures, “though I also might have confidence in the flesh. If anyone else thinks he may have confidence in the flesh, I more so: circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of the Hebrews; concerning the law, a Pharisee; concerning zeal, persecuting the church; concerning the righteousness which is in the law, blameless” (Philippians 3:4-6; also see Acts 26:4-5). We see from this statement of Paul that his background and qualifications were well known to all, people knew very well that on the grounds of his religiosity, he was faultless and beyond any criticism. 

Having accepted the Lord Jesus as his savior, he immediately started preaching about Him being the Son of God, the promised Messiah (Acts 9:20, 27, 29), and his preaching this was also from the same Scriptures (Acts 17:2), that were the basis of his opposing and persecuting earlier. In other words, before and after his conversion, there was nothing in Paul’s life that was hidden from society, was immoral, or was socially unacceptable, or was worthy of criticism in any manner. And yet, here, in 2 Corinthians 4:2, the first characteristic that he states about his ministry is that he has renounced the hidden things of shame! How can we reconcile these two seemingly contradictory statements of Paul about himself?

The key to reconciling and understanding this apparent discrepancy or contradiction is in the beginning of Philippians 3:4, “though I also might have confidence in the flesh.” Before coming to faith in the Lord and accepting Him as his savior and Lord, Paul’s zeal and works were based on his ‘works of the flesh’, i.e., his own abilities, education, background, and support from other men – the acceptance and affirmation he had from the religious authorities. Based on what he thought and had been taught as being correct, he did what seemed appropriate and worthwhile to him, and he even presumed that it would be right and acceptable in the sight of God as well. Paul admits that his misguided zeal and inappropriate tendencies had made him an opponent of the Lord Jesus and a persecutor of the Lord’s people, making him exceedingly enraged against them, a blasphemer and an insolent person (Acts 26:9-11; 1 Corinthians 15:9; Philippians 3:6; 1 Timothy 1:13). After coming to faith in the Lord Jesus, this mentality of doing things according to his own ‘flesh’, i.e., according to his own will and understanding, his own concepts of right and wrong, immediately changed. Paul became humble, submissive, and fully obedient not any person but only to the Lord (Acts 9:5-6; 26:19). In other words, willing to do whatever the Lord had set for him, asked him to say or do, at whatever cost it may be (Acts 9:15-16). So much so, that because of this change that had come in him, those religious leaders who used to support him, use him, now became his opponents, wanting to kill him; but Paul did not fear them, never hesitated or vacillated in speaking the truth before everyone, nor did he ever step back from telling, teachings, and preaching that which was Scripturally correct (Acts 26:6, 19-22).

Because of his this former “confidence in the flesh” and its manifestations in his behavior, he considered himself to be the least of the Apostles, not even worthy of being called and Apostle (1 Corinthians 15:8-9), and called himself the ‘chief of sinners’ (1 Timothy 1:15). Notice also that Paul’s arrogance, aggression, and other such actions were the external manifestation of the internal errors he was living with. Once his internal situation got corrected through coming to faith in the Lord, becoming submissive and obedient to Him, the external manifestations of the internal problems also automatically got corrected. Therefore, Paul calls them the ‘hidden things of shame’ - he was good and beyond reproach before the people. But the internal unseen short-comings that created the problems in his outside behavior, had made him a severe problem for himself, as well as others. When his ‘hidden’ got corrected, the ‘evident’ also got corrected automatically.

These are the ‘hidden things of shame’ that Paul straightaway renounced on coming to faith in Christ Jesus. Paul gave up his ‘confidence in the flesh’, i.e., on relying on his own judgments and decisions based on his own abilities and education; on following men and their teachings for their stature. Paul gave up his arrogance and imposing lifestyle; he became humble and longsuffering, patiently putting up with the faults and shortcomings in God’s children and gently correcting them, instead of going after them with a stick, or casting them away, or separating himself from them when they fell short of his expectations, or in their following the Lord in any way. He became obedient to the will of the Lord, seeking and learning from the Lord what to say, to whom to say, when and where to say instead of doing his ministry the way he felt it ought to be done. Now, he did not only speak and preach about love, forgiveness, and reconciliation. Rather, he actively became engaged in bringing down the walls of separation instead of building them up, and labored to bring about practical unity instead of just preaching about it.

We learn from Paul that this then is the first characteristic that a minister of God’s Word should have – put away all confidence of the flesh; and be humble, patient, longsuffering; become completely obedient to the Lord for the ministry that God wants him to do. Peter too said the same in 1 Peter 2:1-2; i.e., to desire and grow by the pure milk of the Word, one has to first put aside all malice, deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and evil speaking – an internal change has to come first, which will then manifest as changed behavior externally.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Repenting of your sins, and asking the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely, surrendering yourself to Him - is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. You only have to say a short but sincere prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ willingly and with a penitent heart, and at the same time completely commit and submit your life to Him. You can also make this prayer and submission in words something like, “Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sins and repent of them. I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself, paying for them through your life.  Because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, and you rose again from the grave on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God and have freely provided to me the forgiveness, and redemption from my sins, through faith in you. Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.
