बपतिस्मा या बपतिस्मे?
पिछले लेख में हमने इफिसियों 4:5 से देखा था कि वचन में स्पष्ट लिखा है कि बपतिस्मा एक ही है; एक से अधिक नहीं। इस बात में विरोधाभास और फिर असमंजस तब ही उठता है जब बाइबल के बाहर की “पवित्र आत्मा का बपतिस्मा” की धारणा को सही स्वीकार कर लिया जाए। अर्थात, प्रभु यीशु की आज्ञा के अनुसार पानी से दिए जाने वाले बपतिस्मे के अतिरिक्त एक अन्य बपतिस्मा, जो तथाकथित पवित्र आत्मा के कहे के अनुसार या पवित्र आत्मा की ओर से है, को भी स्वीकार किया जाए। और हम यह देख चुके हैं कि ऐसा होना बाइबल की किसी भी बात के साथ मेल नहीं खाता है। किन्तु फिर भी, अपनी इस गलत धारणा को सही ठहराने के लिए यह गलत शिक्षा देने वाले लोग एक अन्य पद का दुरुपयोग करते हैं, उसकी गलत व्याख्या करके अपने तर्क को सही ठहराने का प्रयास करते हैं, क्योंकि वहाँ पर एक-वचन “बपतिस्मा” नहीं, वरन बहु-वचन “बपतिस्मे” लिखा हुआ है। आज हम इसी पद का विश्लेषण और व्याख्या करेंगे, और देखेंगे कि बाइबल की व्याख्या के मूल सिद्धांतों के आधार पर जब सही रीति से व्याख्या की जाती है तो यही सामने आता है कि परमेश्वर के वचन में कोई विरोधाभास, कोई त्रुटि या दोगलापन नहीं है; जबकि इन गलत शिक्षाओं को देने वाले लोगों की बातों के कारण परमेश्वर के वचन में ये प्रतीत होने वाले विरोधाभास और समझने में गलतियाँ उत्पन्न होने लगती हैं।
बपतिस्मा मसीही विश्वास की एक मूल शिक्षा है। इब्रानियों 6:1-3 में इन मूल शिक्षाओं को सीखने के बारे में लिखा गया है; इस खंड में इब्रानियों 6:2 में लिखा है “और बपतिस्मों और हाथ रखने, और मरे हुओं के जी उठने, और अन्तिम न्याय की शिक्षा रूपी नेव, फिर से न डालें।” ध्यान कीजिए, बाइबल के पद में प्रयुक्त शब्द है “बपतिस्मों”, जो बहुवचन है, और एक से अधिक बपतिस्मे होने का स्पष्ट संकेत करता है; किन्तु यह भी ध्यान दीजिए कि बहुवचन प्रयोग बपतिस्मों से संबंधित शिक्षा रूपी नींव के लिए है, बपतिस्मा लिए या दिए जाने के संदर्भ में नहीं। इसी बहुवचन को आधार बनाकर, गलत धारणाओं और शिक्षाओं को देने वाले ये लोग, पानी से दिए गए बपतिस्मे के अतिरिक्त, पवित्र आत्मा का बपतिस्मा एक अन्य या पृथक बपतिस्मा होने को भी सही ठहराने का प्रयास करते हैं। किन्तु यदि इस पद का बाइबल की व्याख्या के मूल सिद्धांतों के अनुसार सही रीति से विश्लेषण किया जाए तो स्पष्ट हो जाता है कि उनकी यह शिक्षा भी गलत है, अनुचित है, और सही बातों को सही रीति से प्रयोग करने के द्वारा नहीं है।
इस पद, इब्रानियों 6:2 को उसके संदर्भ में, अर्थात उसके साथ के पदों के साथ देखिए। साथ ही यह भी ध्यान रखिए कि बाइबल की प्रत्येक अन्य पुस्तक के समान, इब्रानियों को लिखी गई यह पत्री भी, अपने मूल स्वरूप में एक संपूर्ण लेख थी, अध्यायों और पदों में विभाजित नहीं थी। बाइबल की प्रत्येक पुस्तक के लेखों को, उनके अध्ययन, हवाला देने, और स्मरण करने में सहायता के लिए, अध्यायों और पदों में बहुत बाद में विभाजित किया गया। यह विभाजन कृत्रिम है, इसलिए कभी-कभी असमंजस भी उत्पन्न करता है। इब्रानियों 6:2 के संदर्भ में, उसकी बात से संबंधित, उससे पहले के पदों को देखिए, विशेषकर इब्रानियों 5:12 “समय के विचार से तो तुम्हें गुरु हो जाना चाहिए था, तौभी क्या यह आवश्यक है, कि कोई तुम्हें परमेश्वर के वचनों की आदि शिक्षा फिर से सिखाए ओर ऐसे हो गए हो, कि तुम्हें अन्न के बदले अब तक दूध ही चाहिए”; और 6:1 “इसलिये आओ मसीह की शिक्षा की आरम्भ की बातों को छोड़ कर, हम सिद्धता की ओर आगे बढ़ते जाएं, और मरे हुए कामों से मन फिराने, और परमेश्वर पर विश्वास करने” को। ये दोनों पद हमें इब्रानियों 6:2 का संदर्भ समझते हैं कि इस खंड में “आदि शिक्षा” या “मसीह की शिक्षा की आरंभिक बातों” की बात हो रही है, जैसे कि 6:2 में भी बपतिस्मों से संबंधित शिक्षा ही की बात लिखी गई है; अर्थात अन्य बातों के विषय की शिक्षाओं के साथ बपतिस्मे की शिक्षाओं की बात हो रही है, जिन्हें मसीही विश्वासियों को जानना चाहिए। यह बपतिस्मा लेने या देने के बारे में नहीं है, वरन उससे संबंधित शिक्षाओं के बारे में है।
बपतिस्मे की शिक्षाओं के आधार पर वचन में तीन बपतिस्मे दिए गए हैं - यूहन्ना बपतिस्मा देने वाले का, मूसा का, और प्रभु यीशु तथा उसकी मृत्यु का:
प्रेरितों 18:25 “उसने प्रभु के मार्ग की शिक्षा पाई थी, और मन लगाकर यीशु के विषय में ठीक ठीक सुनाता, और सिखाता था, परन्तु वह केवल यूहन्ना के बपतिस्मा की बात जानता था।”
1 कुरिन्थियों 10:2 “और सब ने बादल में, और समुद्र में, मूसा का बपतिस्मा लिया।” - शिक्षा के दृष्टिकोण से, पुराने नियम में बपतिस्मे का यह उदाहरण इस्राएलियों का लाल सागर में जाना, और उनका ऊपर बादल से ढाँपा तथा दोनों ओर विभाजित सागर के पानी की दीवारों का होना - उनका हर ओर से जल से ढँके हुए होना और फिर पार निकालना, यानि कि जल के अंदर जाना और बाहर आना था।
रोमियों 6:3 “क्या तुम नहीं जानते, कि हम जितनों ने मसीह यीशु का बपतिस्मा लिया तो उस की मृत्यु का बपतिस्मा लिया।”
किन्तु इन तीनों में बपतिस्मे का माध्यम एक ही है - पानी से बपतिस्मा देना, पानी में डुबकी या पानी के द्वारा चारों ओर से घेर दिए जाना। इसलिए बपतिस्मे से संबंधित शिक्षाओं के आधार पर क्योंकि एक से अधिक प्रकार के बपतिस्मे हुए; इसीलिए इब्रानियों 6:2, जो मसीह की मूल शिक्षाओं की बात कर रहा है, में बहुवचन “बपतिस्मों” का प्रयोग किया गया है। किन्तु इसका वचन की अन्य किसी भी बात के साथ कोई विरोधाभास नहीं है, क्योंकि तीनों ही रूप में एक ही माध्यम से और एक ही रीति से - पानी में डुबकी या पानी से घेरे जाने के द्वारा बपतिस्मा दिया गया। और इफिसियों 4:5 भी इसी एक बपतिस्मे की बात करता है। इफिसियों 4:5 व्यावहारिक बपतिस्मा लेने या देने की बात करता है, जबकि इब्रानियों 6:2 बपतिस्मे से संबंधित शिक्षाओं की बात करता है। दोनों ही एक-दूसरे के पूरक हैं, इनमें कोई विरोधाभास नहीं है, कोई गलती नहीं है। जो भी गलती है वह बात को उसके संदर्भ से बाहर लेकर एक गलत दृष्टिकोण के साथ उसका मेल बैठाने का प्रयास करने के कारण है।
इसलिए बपतिस्मा एक ही है, वह पानी से, उसमें डुबकी देने के द्वारा ही दिया गया है। बाइबल की शिक्षाओं के अनुसार “पवित्र आत्मा का बपतिस्मा” की धारणा का कोई आधार नहीं है, यह धारणा गलत है, अस्वीकार्य है। अगले लेख में हम बपतिस्मे से संबंधित एक अन्य असमंजस की बात, “आग से बपतिस्मा” के बारे में देखेंगे।
यदि आप एक मसीही विश्वासी हैं, तो कृपया अपने जीवन को जाँच कर देख लें कि आप वास्तव में नया जन्म पाए हुए प्रभु यीशु के शिष्य हैं, पापों से छुड़ाए गए हैं तथा आप ने अपना जीवन प्रभु की आज्ञाकारिता में जीने के लिए उस को समर्पित किया है। आपके लिए यह अनिवार्य है कि आप परमेश्वर के वचन की सही शिक्षाओं को जानने के द्वारा एक परिपक्व विश्वासी बनें, तथा सभी शिक्षाओं को वचन की कसौटी पर परखने, और बेरिया के विश्वासियों के समान, लोगों की बातों को पहले वचन से जाँचने और उनकी सत्यता को निश्चित करने के बाद ही उनको स्वीकार करने और मानने वाले बनें (प्रेरितों 17:11; 1 थिस्सलुनीकियों 5:21)। अन्यथा शैतान द्वारा छोड़े हुए झूठे प्रेरित और भविष्यद्वक्ता मसीह के सेवक बन कर (2 कुरिन्थियों 11:13-15) अपनी ठग विद्या और चतुराई से आपको प्रभु के लिए अप्रभावी कर देंगे और आप के मसीही जीवन एवं आशीषों का नाश कर देंगे।
यदि आपने प्रभु की शिष्यता को अभी तक स्वीकार नहीं किया है, तो अपने अनन्त जीवन और स्वर्गीय आशीषों को सुनिश्चित करने के लिए अभी प्रभु यीशु के पक्ष में अपना निर्णय कर लीजिए। जहाँ प्रभु की आज्ञाकारिता है, उसके वचन की बातों का आदर और पालन है, वहाँ प्रभु की आशीष और सुरक्षा भी है। प्रभु यीशु से अपने पापों के लिए क्षमा माँगकर, स्वेच्छा से तथा सच्चे मन से अपने आप को उसकी अधीनता में समर्पित कर दीजिए - उद्धार और स्वर्गीय जीवन का यही एकमात्र मार्ग है। आपको स्वेच्छा और सच्चे मन से प्रभु यीशु मसीह से केवल एक छोटी प्रार्थना करनी है, और साथ ही अपना जीवन उसे पूर्णतः समर्पित करना है। आप यह प्रार्थना और समर्पण कुछ इस प्रकार से भी कर सकते हैं, “प्रभु यीशु मैं आपका धन्यवाद करता हूँ कि आपने मेरे पापों की क्षमा और समाधान के लिए उन पापों को अपने ऊपर लिया, उनके कारण मेरे स्थान पर क्रूस की मृत्यु सही, गाड़े गए, और मेरे उद्धार के लिए आप तीसरे दिन जी भी उठे, और आज जीवित प्रभु परमेश्वर हैं। कृपया मेरे पापों को क्षमा करें, मुझे अपनी शरण में लें, और मुझे अपना शिष्य बना लें। मैं अपना जीवन आप के हाथों में समर्पित करता हूँ।” सच्चे और समर्पित मन से की गई आपकी एक प्रार्थना आपके वर्तमान तथा भविष्य को, इस लोक के और परलोक के जीवन को, अनन्तकाल के लिए स्वर्गीय एवं आशीषित बना देगी।

Baptism or Baptisms?
In the previous article, from Ephesians 4:5 we saw that the Scriptures clearly state that there is only one baptism; not more. The confusion and contradiction about this number occurs only when the unBiblical concept of "baptism of the Holy Spirit" is accepted as correct. In other words, a baptism other than the water baptism commanded by the Lord Jesus is also accepted, as an extra one supposedly commanded by or by the authority of the Holy Spirit. And we have seen that this concept doesn't match up with anything in the Bible. But still, to justify this misconception, people who give this wrong teaching, misuse another verse, and try to justify their argument by misinterpreting that verse. They are able to misinterpret that verse and misguide people because there, instead of the singular "baptism", the plural word "baptisms" is written. Today we will analyze and interpret this verse, and see that actually there is no contradiction, no error or duplicity in the Word of God, when it is properly interpreted on the basis of the basic principles of Biblical interpretation. But due to the misinterpretations and wrong teachings of the people who believe and propagate these erroneous concepts, various misunderstandings, contradictions, and apparent errors are brought into the teachings from the Word of God.
Baptism is a basic or fundamental doctrine of the Christian faith. The necessity of a Christian Believer learning about these fundamental doctrines is stated in Hebrews 6:1-3, where, Hebrews 6:2 says "of the doctrine of baptisms, of laying on of hands, of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment." Note, that the word used in this verse is "baptisms," which is plural, and clearly indicates more than one baptism. But also note that here this plural usage refers to the foundational learning, or doctrine concerning baptisms. The plural usage is not in the context of being baptized. Based on this plural usage, the people propagating misconceptions and wrong teachings, try to justify the baptism of the Holy Spirit as a separate or different baptism, required in addition to water baptism. But if this verse is properly analyzed according to the basic tenets of Biblical interpretation as given earlier, it becomes clear that this alleged justification of "baptism of the Holy Spirit" is also wrong and inappropriate; it is not based upon using the correct use of Principles of Bible interpretation.
Please look at and study this verse, Hebrews 6:2, in its context, i.e., along with the verses preceding it. Also note that this Epistle to the Hebrews, like every other book in the Bible, in its original form, was a complete text, not divided into chapters and verses. The writings of each book of the Bible were later divided into chapters and verses to aid in their study, citation, and memorization. This division is artificial, hence sometimes causing confusion. Bearing this point in mind, for the context of Hebrews 6:2, particularly look at two preceding verses, i.e., Hebrews 5:12 “For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the first principles of the oracles of God; and you have come to need milk and not solid food.” and Hebrews 6:1 "Therefore, leaving the discussion of the elementary principles of Christ, let us go on to perfection, not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God." Both of these verses help us understand the context of Hebrews 6:2. We learn from Hebrews 6:1 that this passage is referring to the "basic principles" or "the elementary principles of Christ" that every Christian Believer ought to know; and amongst these basic principles, is the “doctrine of baptisms” that is mentioned in Hebrews 6:2. In other words, this verse is referring to the teachings related to baptism, along with the teachings related to other fundamental doctrinal topics topics written there, which the Christian Believers were expected to know. They are not referring to the taking or giving of baptism, but only to the doctrinal teachings related to it.
On the basis of doctrinal teachings of baptism, there are three baptisms mentioned in the Scriptures - of John the Baptist, of Moses, and of the Lord Jesus and his death:
Acts 18:25 "This man had been instructed in the way of the Lord; and being fervent in spirit, he spoke and taught accurately the things of the Lord, though he knew only the baptism of John."
1 Corinthians 10:2 "all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea" - From a learning point of view, this example of baptism in the Old Testament is the Israelites going into the Red Sea, being covered by a cloud on top and walls of the divided sea on either side - their being covered with water on all sides; and then passing through, that is, going in and being covered with, and coming out of the water.
Romans 6:3 “Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death?"
But the means of baptism is the same in all three - baptizing with water, immersing in water or being surrounded by water. So, there is more than one type of baptism in context of the doctrinal teachings about baptism; that's why the plural "baptisms" is used in Hebrews 6:2, referring to the elementary principles of Christ. But this causes no contradiction with anything else in the Scriptures, for all three are baptisms by the same means and in the same manner — by immersion i.e., by being covered with water. And Ephesians 4:5 too speaks of this same baptism. Ephesians 4:5 speaks of practical taking or giving of baptism; while Hebrews 6:2 speaks of doctrinal teachings related to baptism. Both these verses complement each other, but there is no contradiction, no mistake. Whatever the mistake is, it is because of trying to reconcile a wrong point of view with Biblical truth, and that too by taking it out of context to interpret and understand it.
Therefore, there is only one baptism, it is given by water, by immersion in it. According to the teachings of the Bible, the concept of "baptism of the Holy Spirit" has no basis, this concept is patently wrong, and absolutely unacceptable. In the next article, we will consider another confusion regarding baptism, about the “baptism by fire.”
If you are a Christian Believer, then please examine your life and make sure that you are actually a Born-Again disciple of the Lord, i.e., are redeemed from your sins, have submitted and surrendered your life to the Lord Jesus to live in obedience to Him and His Word. Whoever may be the preacher or teacher, but you should always, like the Berean Believers, first cross-check and test all teachings that you receive, from the Word of God. Only after ascertaining the truth and veracity of the teachings brought to you by men, should you accept and obey them (Acts 17:11; 1 Thessalonians 5:21). If you do not do this, the false apostles and prophets sent by Satan as ministers of Christ (2 Corinthians 11:13-15), will by their trickery, cunningness, and craftiness render you ineffective for the Lord and cause severe damage to your Christian life and your rewards.
If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord Jesus, then to ensure your eternal life and heavenly rewards, take a decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now. Wherever there is surrender and obedience towards the Lord Jesus, the Lord’s blessings and safety are also there. If you are still not Born Again, have not obtained salvation, or have not asked the Lord Jesus for forgiveness for your sins, then you have the opportunity to do so right now. A short prayer said voluntarily with a sincere heart, with heartfelt repentance for your sins, and a fully submissive attitude, “Lord Jesus, I confess that I have disobeyed You, and have knowingly or unknowingly, in mind, in thought, in attitude, and in deeds, committed sins. I believe that you have fully borne the punishment of my sins by your sacrifice on the cross, and have paid the full price of those sins for all eternity. Please forgive my sins, change my heart and mind towards you, and make me your disciple, take me with you." God longs for your company and wants to see you blessed, but to make this possible, is your personal decision. Will you not say this prayer now, while you have the time and opportunity to do so - the decision is yours.
