बपतिस्मा - किस नाम से लेना है?
बपतिस्मे से संबंधित अपने अध्ययन में हम अभी तक देख चुके हैं कि बाइबल के अनुसार, आरंभिक कलीसिया में बपतिस्मा हमेशा ही सुसमाचार को स्वीकार और ग्रहण करने वाले वयस्कों को, उनकी माँग अथवा सहमति से दिया जाता था। साथ ही हमने यह भी देखा था कि शब्द “बैपटिज़ो” के शब्दार्थ के अनुसार, बपतिस्मा हमेशा डुबकी का ही होता था, किसी अन्य विधि से नहीं, आरंभिक कलीसिया के लोग किसी अन्य विधि से बपतिस्मा होने के बारे में नहीं जानते थे। आज हम देखेंगे कि व्यक्ति के बपतिस्मे में किसी नाम के प्रयोग का क्या कोई महत्व है? क्या बपतिस्मा किसी नाम के अंतर्गत लिए या नहीं लिए जाने से जायज़ अथवा नाजायज़ होता है?
इस प्रश्न के उत्तर के लिए हमें सबसे पहले बपतिस्मे के उन तीन उद्देश्यों का ध्यान करना होगा, जिन्हें हम आरंभ में देख चुके हैं। ये तीन उद्देश्य थे - बपतिस्मा भीतरी परिवर्तन की बाहरी सार्वजनिक गवाही देना है; बपतिस्मा लेने के द्वारा व्यक्ति संसार के सामने यह व्यक्त करता है की उसने अपने आप को प्रभु के हाथों में सौंप दिया है, और अब प्रभु उसे उस अन्ततः होने वाली अंतिम जवाबदेही तथा न्याय के लिए तैयार कर रहा है, जिसका सामना सभी को करना ही पड़ेगा, जिससे कि मसीह के अनुयायी होने के नाते उनके द्वारा किए गए और नहीं किए गए कामों के अनुसार उन्हें प्रतिफल और परिणाम दिए जाएं; बपतिस्मा लेना प्रभु की आज्ञा है, और आज्ञाकारिता में आशीष है। साथ ही हम यह भी देख चुके हैं कि बपतिस्मा लेने से न तो मसीही विश्वास और न ही उद्धार मिलता है; और बपतिस्मा नहीं लेने से न तो विश्वास और न ही उद्धार चला जाता है। किन्तु यदि बपतिस्मा प्रभु के द्वारा बताई और सिखाई गई विधि से न हो, वरन मनुष्यों या संस्थाओं के द्वारा बनाई गई विधि के अनुसार हो, तो फिर वह प्रभु की आज्ञाकारिता नहीं, प्रभु का बपतिस्मा नहीं, बल्कि मनुष्यों या संस्थाओं की आज्ञाकारिता का निर्वाह करना, और उनका बपतिस्मा लेना हो जाता है।
इन बातों को ध्यान में रखते हुए, यह प्रकट है कि महत्व बपतिस्मे को लेने का है, बपतिस्मे के समय किस या किन नामों का उच्चारण किया जाता है, उसे बहते पानी में दिया/लिया जाता है अथवा खड़े पानी में, इन बातों का नहीं। यूहन्ना बपतिस्मा देने वाले ने जब बपतिस्मा देना आरंभ किया, तब कोई उल्लेख नहीं है कि उसने बपतिस्मा देते समय किसी भी नाम का कोई उच्चारण किया हो। किन्तु उसके द्वारा दिया गया बपतिस्मा जायज़ था, और प्रभु यीशु ने भी स्वयं उससे बपतिस्मा लिया। मत्ती 28:19 के अनुसार, प्रभु यीशु मसीह के ही शब्दों में बपतिस्मा “पिता, पुत्र, और पवित्र आत्मा” के नाम से दिया जाना है – ये तीनों ही त्रिएक परमेश्वर के स्वरूप हैं और पूर्णतः एक समान हैं, कोई भी किसी भी दूसरे से न तो भिन्न है और न किसी रीति से कम है। यही “त्रिएक परमेश्वर” जब इस धरती पर अवतरित होकर सदेह आया, तो उसका नाम “यीशु” रखा गया; अर्थात यीशु त्रिएक परमेश्वर ही का नाम है, जो उसके उद्धारकर्ता स्वरूप को दिखाता है (मत्ती 1:21)। इसलिए चाहे तीनों का नाम लो, या किसी एक का, अभिप्राय तो उसी एक परमेश्वर को आदर देने और उसकी आज्ञाकारिता को पूरा करना है।
साथ ही वाक्यांश “के नाम से” पर भी ध्यान दीजिए। सामान्य वार्तालाप में यदि इस वाक्यांश को कहा जाए, तो बिना किसी भी असमंजस के लोग समझ लेते हैं कि तात्पर्य उसे आदर देने का है, जिसके नाम के लिए कहा जा रहा है। उदाहरण के लिए यदि कोई व्यक्ति अपने किसी प्रिय जन “के नाम से” कोई वस्तु दान करता है, या कुछ बनवाता है, या कोई कार्यक्रम आयोजित करता है, आदि, तो लोग बिना किसी असमंजस के समझ लेते हैं कि जो किया गया वह उस व्यक्ति के प्रति, जिसके नाम में किया गया, आदर और प्रेम को दिखाने के लिए है। ठीक यही बात बपतिस्मे के लिए भी है; बपतिस्मा चाहे “यीशु” के नाम से लिया जाए, या “पिता, पुत्र, और पवित्र आत्मा” के नाम से, वह उसी एक परमेश्वर को आदर देने, उसके प्रति प्रेम और आज्ञाकारिता की अभिव्यक्ति है।
इसलिए कोई फर्क नहीं पड़ता है कि केवल प्रभु यीशु मसीह के नाम से बपतिस्मा दिया/लिया जाए, या तीनों, पिता, पुत्र और पवित्र आत्मा के नाम से कहकर दिया/लिया जाए; बात एक ही है। यह शिक्षा, कि केवल यीशु के नाम में दिया गया बपतिस्मा ही सही है अन्यथा नहीं, उन समुदायों के द्वारा फैलाई जाती रही है जो त्रिएक परमेश्वर पर विश्वास नहीं रखते हैं। इसलिए ये लोग त्रिएक परमेश्वर के अस्तित्व और बातों पर जहाँ और जैसे संभव है, संदेह उत्पन्न करते हैं, उसके विरोध में धारणाएं उत्पन्न करते हैं। और उनके इसी प्रयास की एक कड़ी उनके द्वारा बपतिस्मे के बारे फैलाई जाने वाली यह शिक्षा है।
परमेश्वर के नाम, तथा पानी के स्थान के साथ बपतिस्मे को जायज़-नाजायज़ दिखाना, शैतान के द्वारा लोगों को गलत शिक्षाओं और व्यर्थ के वाद-विवादों में फंसा कर, उनका ध्यान कर्मों की धार्मिकता की ओर लगाने का प्रयास है, जिससे वे परमेश्वर के अनुग्रह से मिलने वाली क्षमा और धार्मिकता की सादगी और आशीष से निकलकर व्यर्थ के अनुचित कर्मों में फँसे रहें, आपस में विवाद करते, लड़ते रहें, पापों से पश्चाताप के स्थान पर विधि-विधानों के निर्वाह के चक्करों में पड़कर प्रभु के मार्गों से भटक जाएँ।
इन बातों को ध्यान में रखते हुए, यह प्रकट है कि महत्व बपतिस्मे को लेने का है, बपतिस्मे के समय किस या किन नामों का उच्चारण किया जाता है, उसे बहते पानी में दिया/लिया जाता है अथवा खड़े पानी में, इन बातों का नहीं। इसलिए कोई फर्क नहीं पड़ता है कि केवल प्रभु यीशु मसीह के नाम से बपतिस्मा दिया/लिया जाए, या तीनों, पिता, पुत्र और पवित्र आत्मा के नाम से दिया/लिया जाए, यदि उसे उपरोक्त बपतिस्मे के उद्देश्यों की पूर्ति के लिए लिया/दिया जाता है।
यदि आप एक मसीही विश्वासी हैं, तो कृपया अपने जीवन को जाँच कर देख लें कि आप वास्तव में नया जन्म पाए हुए प्रभु यीशु के शिष्य हैं, पापों से छुड़ाए गए हैं तथा आप ने अपना जीवन प्रभु की आज्ञाकारिता में जीने के लिए उस को समर्पित किया है। आपके लिए यह अनिवार्य है कि आप परमेश्वर के वचन की सही शिक्षाओं को जानने के द्वारा एक परिपक्व विश्वासी बनें, तथा सभी शिक्षाओं को वचन की कसौटी पर परखने, और बेरिया के विश्वासियों के समान, लोगों की बातों को पहले वचन से जाँचने और उनकी सत्यता को निश्चित करने के बाद ही उनको स्वीकार करने और मानने वाले बनें (प्रेरितों 17:11; 1 थिस्सलुनीकियों 5:21)। अन्यथा शैतान द्वारा छोड़े हुए झूठे प्रेरित और भविष्यद्वक्ता मसीह के सेवक बन कर (2 कुरिन्थियों 11:13-15) अपनी ठग विद्या और चतुराई से आपको प्रभु के लिए अप्रभावी कर देंगे और आप के मसीही जीवन एवं आशीषों का नाश कर देंगे।
यदि आपने प्रभु की शिष्यता को अभी तक स्वीकार नहीं किया है, तो अपने अनन्त जीवन और स्वर्गीय आशीषों को सुनिश्चित करने के लिए अभी प्रभु यीशु के पक्ष में अपना निर्णय कर लीजिए। जहाँ प्रभु की आज्ञाकारिता है, उसके वचन की बातों का आदर और पालन है, वहाँ प्रभु की आशीष और सुरक्षा भी है। प्रभु यीशु से अपने पापों के लिए क्षमा माँगकर, स्वेच्छा से तथा सच्चे मन से अपने आप को उसकी अधीनता में समर्पित कर दीजिए - उद्धार और स्वर्गीय जीवन का यही एकमात्र मार्ग है। आपको स्वेच्छा और सच्चे मन से प्रभु यीशु मसीह से केवल एक छोटी प्रार्थना करनी है, और साथ ही अपना जीवन उसे पूर्णतः समर्पित करना है। आप यह प्रार्थना और समर्पण कुछ इस प्रकार से भी कर सकते हैं, “प्रभु यीशु मैं आपका धन्यवाद करता हूँ कि आपने मेरे पापों की क्षमा और समाधान के लिए उन पापों को अपने ऊपर लिया, उनके कारण मेरे स्थान पर क्रूस की मृत्यु सही, गाड़े गए, और मेरे उद्धार के लिए आप तीसरे दिन जी भी उठे, और आज जीवित प्रभु परमेश्वर हैं। कृपया मेरे पापों को क्षमा करें, मुझे अपनी शरण में लें, और मुझे अपना शिष्य बना लें। मैं अपना जीवन आप के हाथों में समर्पित करता हूँ।” सच्चे और समर्पित मन से की गई आपकी एक प्रार्थना आपके वर्तमान तथा भविष्य को, इस लोक के और परलोक के जीवन को, अनन्तकाल के लिए स्वर्गीय एवं आशीषित बना देगी।

Baptism - In Whose Name?
In our study on baptism, so far, we have seen that Biblically speaking, in the first or initial Church baptism was always given only to adults, who had heard and accepted the gospel, and were either asking, or were consenting to be baptized. We had also seen that in accordance with the literal meaning of the word “baptizo”, it was always immersion baptism, there was no other method of baptism; the people of the initial Church did not know of any other way of baptism. Today we will see whether there is any importance of the name used for baptism? Can baptism be considered valid or invalid by the use of a particular name, or not using it?
For the answer to this question, we will have to bear in mind the three purposes of baptism that we had seen initially. These three purposes are - 1. It is meant to be an external, public witnessing of the inner transformation, of the changed life, brought about in the person by his confessing and repenting of sins. 2. Through taking baptism, the person is conveying to the world that he has placed himself in the hands of the Lord, and is now being prepared by the Lord for the eventual final accounting and judgment that everyone will have to face to receive their final rewards and consequences, for what they have done or left undone in their life, as a follower of Christ. 3. Taking baptism is an expression of one’s submission and surrender to God and His Word, of being committed to live in obedience to God; and in obedience are blessings. We have also seen that by being baptized neither does anyone become a Christian Believer, not is he saved or Born-Again; and because of not taking baptism no one ever loses their salvation or Christian Faith. But if baptism is not taken in the manner taught and instructed by the Lord, instead is done in the manner decided upon by men or institutions, then it is no longer the Lord’s baptism; rather, it becomes the baptism of those persons or institutions, done in obedience to those men and institutions.
With these in mind, it is clear that the importance is of taking baptism, and not of the names being mentioned at the time of baptism, or whether it is done in flowing water or standing water. When John the Baptist started baptizing, there is no mention of his speaking out any name while baptizing. But his baptism was a valid baptism, and the Lord Jesus too came to be baptized by him. According to Matthew 28:19, in Lord Jesus’s own words, baptism is to be given “in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit” - these three are the one Triune God, are completely equivalent to each other, none is any different than any other in any manner. When this Triune God was incarnated on earth in bodily form, He was named “Jesus”; in other words, Jesus is the name of the same, the one, Triune God, who came as the savior of the world (Matthew 1:21). Therefore, whether the name of one, or of the three of them is taken, it means and conveys the same thing - acknowledging and honoring the same God, and expressing love and obedience towards Him.
Consider the use of the phrase “in the name of”. In general conversation if this phrase is used, then without any confusion the people readily understand that it means to give honor to the person whose name is being used. For example, if someone donates something, or has something built or made, or organizes some function, etc., “in the name of” someone near and dear, then there is no problem in understanding that whatever has been done, is meant to honor or express love for the person in whose name it is done. The very same meaning, is just as true for baptism; whether baptism is taken in the name of Jesus or in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, it is meant to give honor to and in obedience to the one and same God.
Therefore, it makes no difference whatsoever, whether the baptism is done only in the name of the Lord Jesus or “in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit”; it means one and the same thing. This teaching that only the baptism given in the name of Lord Jesus is correct, otherwise not, has been spread by those sects and cults that do not accept and believe in the Triune God. Therefore, wherever possible, and however they can, they say and do things to create doubts and confusion about the Triune God, and preach false concepts. This wrong teaching about baptizing in a particular name is one of their ways of creating this doubt and confusion.
This is Satan’s ploy to use the name of God and the place of baptism to preach baptism being valid or invalid, and thereby to entangle people in vain arguments and discussions, and to subtly draw them into believing in righteousness by works of some kind. This way they draw the people’s attention away from forgiveness of sins by the grace of God and the simplicity of righteousness by Faith, and make them fall into vain arguments and conflicts, so that instead of repenting from sins and believing in the Lord Jesus, people remain occupied in fulfilling inconsequential rituals and traditions, and get deviated away from the he ways of God.
Keeping these things in mind, it is clear that the importance is of taking baptism in obedience to God; and things like whether it is taken in flowing water or stagnant water, and what words or name is spoken while baptizing has no importance at all. Baptism done in the name of the Lord Jesus, or in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are one and the same, equally correct, if done in fulfillment of the aforementioned purposes of baptism.
If you are a Christian Believer, then please examine your life and make sure that you are actually a Born-Again disciple of the Lord, i.e., are redeemed from your sins, have submitted and surrendered your life to the Lord Jesus to live in obedience to Him and His Word. Whoever may be the preacher or teacher, but you should always, like the Berean Believers, first cross-check and test all teachings that you receive, from the Word of God. Only after ascertaining the truth and veracity of the teachings brought to you by men, should you accept and obey them (Acts 17:11; 1 Thessalonians 5:21). If you do not do this, the false apostles and prophets sent by Satan as ministers of Christ (2 Corinthians 11:13-15), will by their trickery, cunningness, and craftiness render you ineffective for the Lord and cause severe damage to your Christian life and your rewards.
If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord Jesus, then to ensure your eternal life and heavenly rewards, take a decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now. Wherever there is surrender and obedience towards the Lord Jesus, the Lord’s blessings and safety are also there. If you are still not Born Again, have not obtained salvation, or have not asked the Lord Jesus for forgiveness for your sins, then you have the opportunity to do so right now. A short prayer said voluntarily with a sincere heart, with heartfelt repentance for your sins, and a fully submissive attitude, “Lord Jesus, I confess that I have disobeyed You, and have knowingly or unknowingly, in mind, in thought, in attitude, and in deeds, committed sins. I believe that you have fully borne the punishment of my sins by your sacrifice on the cross, and have paid the full price of those sins for all eternity. Please forgive my sins, change my heart and mind towards you, and make me your disciple, take me with you." God longs for your company and wants to see you blessed, but to make this possible, is your personal decision. Will you not say this prayer now, while you have the time and opportunity to do so - the decision is yours.
