बपतिस्मे का उद्देश्य (3) - आज्ञाकारिता
पिछले दो लेखों से हम बपतिस्मे के उद्देश्य के बारे में अध्ययन कर रहे हैं। परमेश्वर ने अपने पुत्र के अग्रदूत, यूहन्ना, की सेवकाई का एक बहुत महत्वपूर्ण भाग, पानी में बपतिस्मा देना निर्धारित किया था। दूसरे शब्दों में, परमेश्वर के दृष्टिकोण से, उद्धारकर्ता प्रभु यीशु मसीह की सेवकाई को समझने और स्वीकार करने के लिए लोगों की तैयारी में बपतिस्मे के महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका थी (यूहन्ना 1:31)। हमने यह भी देखा है की किसी ने भी बपतिस्मे के लिए यूहन्ना का विरोध नहीं किया, न ही उस पर पवित्र शास्त्र, अर्थात हमारे पुराने नियम, से बाहर की किसी बात को आरंभ करने का दोषी ठहराया। बल्कि स्वयं धार्मिक अगुवे, फरीसी और सदूकी उसके पास बपतिस्मा लेने के लिए आए। अभी तक, बाइबल में से हम बपतिस्मे के दो उद्देश्य देख चुके हैं - पहला, गवाही देना, अर्थात, पापों के अंगीकार और उनके लिए पश्चाताप के द्वारा आए भीतरी परिवर्तन के बारे में सार्वजनिक रीति से बाहरी प्रकटीकरण। दूसरा, तैयारी, अर्थात, इस पाप अंगीकार और पश्चाताप से, लोगों को उनकी आते समय में परमेश्वर के प्रति जवाबदेही और उसके प्रतिफलों के बारे में समझाना, और तैयार करना, क्योंकि अन्ततः, प्रत्येक को इसका सामना करना ही पड़ेगा।
हम सुसमाचारों के वृतांतों में देखते हैं कि प्रभु यीशु मसीह ने भी, जहां पर वे थे, वहीं पर बपतिस्मा नहीं ले लिया, लेकिन वे गलील से बैतनिय्याह, जहाँ पर यूहन्ना बपतिस्मा दे रहा था, लगभग 30 वर्ष की आयु में बपतिस्मा लेने के लिए आए (मत्ती 3:13, यूहन्ना 1:28; लूका 3:23)। यदि इसे नक्शे पर देखा जाए तो यह काफी लंबी दूरी है, लेकिन अपनी सेवकाई का आरंभ करने से पहले, बपतिस्मा लेने के लिए, प्रभु यीशु यह दूरी तय कर के आए। यद्यपि अपनी माताओं के द्वारा यूहन्ना और यीशु संबंधी थे (लूका 1:36), किन्तु यीशु की वास्तविकता यूहन्ना पर प्रकट नहीं की गई थी, न परमेश्वर के द्वारा, और न ही प्रभु यीशु के द्वारा। जब यीशु बपतिस्मा लेने के लिए यूहन्ना के पास आया, तब ही यूहन्ना पर प्रकट किया गया की यीशु वास्तव में कौन है; और तब यूहन्ना प्रभु के लिए कहता है “यह परमेश्वर का मेम्ना है, जो जगत के पाप उठा ले जाता है” (यूहन्ना 1:29-36)। इससे पहले यूहन्ना बस इतना ही जानता था कि मसीहा बहुत शीघ्र आने वाला है (मत्ती 3:11-12; यूहन्ना 1:26-27), और उसकी सेवकाई लोगों को मसीहा को पहचानने और स्वीकार करने के लिए तैयार करने की थी; और इस सेवकाई में बपतिस्मे की प्रमुख भूमिका थी (यूहन्ना 1:31)। इसीलिए प्रभु यीशु मसीह भी बपतिस्मा लेने के लिए यूहन्ना के पास आया था; यूहन्ना के साथ अपनी रिश्तेदारी निबाहने के लिए नहीं, वरन परमेश्वर द्वारा उन दोनों की सौंपी गई सेवकाइयों का निर्वाह करने के लिए। और अब जब यूहन्ना जान गया कि यीशु वास्तविकता में कौन है, तो उसने उसके सामने खड़े बपतिस्मा मांगने वाले से स्वाभाविक रीति से कहा, “परन्तु यूहन्ना यह कहकर उसे रोकने लगा, कि मुझे तेरे हाथ से बपतिस्मा लेने की आवश्यकता है, और तू मेरे पास आया है?” (मत्ती 3:14)। हमारे इस अध्ययन के लिए ध्यान देने योग्य बात यहाँ पर प्रभु यीशु के द्वारा यूहन्ना को दिया गया उत्तर है, “यीशु ने उसको यह उत्तर दिया, कि अब तो ऐसा ही होने दे, क्योंकि हमें इसी रीति से सब धामिर्कता को पूरा करना उचित है, तब उसने उस की बात मान ली” (मत्ती 3:15)।
प्रभु यीशु निष्पाप था; उसे किसी बात के लिए पश्चाताप करने की कोई आवश्यकता नहीं थी; उसे धर्मी बनाए जाने की आवश्यकता नहीं थी, वह तो पहले ही से धर्मी था। जब यीशु यूहन्ना के पास आया, तब न केवल यूहन्ना ने उसे परमेश्वर का पुत्र कहा, परन्तु साथ ही यह भी कहा की प्रभु यीशु उसे बपतिस्मा दे, न की उससे बपतिस्मा ले। लेकिन फिर भी प्रभु यीशु ने यूहन्ना ही से कहा की वही उसे बपतिस्मा दे - धार्मिकता को पूरा करने के लिए, अर्थात, पिता परमेश्वर की आज्ञाकारिता के लिए, प्रभु ने अपने आप को किसी अन्य को परमेश्वर द्वारा सौंपी गई सेवकाई के अधीन कर लिया। परमेश्वर के प्रति यह बिना किसी भी संकोच के पूर्ण आज्ञाकारिता, प्रभु यीशु के जीवन का प्रमुख गुण था, जिसकी पुष्टि उस ने बारंबार की (यूहन्ना 4:34; 5:30; 6:38; 8:29)। बपतिस्मा, प्रभु यीशु मसीह की धार्मिकता को और उस के निष्पाप होने को किसी भी प्रकार से ज़रा सा भी निखार या संवार नहीं सकता था। परन्तु परमेश्वर पुत्र ने फिर भी एक मनुष्य से बपतिस्मा लेना इसलिए स्वीकार कर लिया क्योंकि यह पिता परमेश्वर की इच्छा में था। ध्यान कीजिए, प्रभु यीशु मसीह ने यह नहीं कहा कि “यह मेरे धर्मी होने के लिए उचित है”; बल्कि प्रभु ने कहा, “हमें इसी रीति से सब धामिर्कता को पूरा करना उचित है।” बपतिस्मा देना परमेश्वर द्वारा यूहन्ना को सौंपी गई सेवकाई थी, और उसे भी यह परमेश्वर की आज्ञाकारिता में होकर करना था। इसीलिए यहाँ पर अपने उत्तर में प्रभु यीशु ने “हम” कहने के द्वारा उसे भी अपने साथ सम्मिलित कर लिया। साथ ही, प्रभु ने यह नहीं कहा, “धर्मी बनाने के लिए”, बल्कि कहा “धार्मिकता को पूरा करने के लिए”, अर्थात, धार्मिकता के पूर्ण निर्वाह के लिए, या “परमेश्वर ने जो कहा है उसका पालन करने के लिए।”
यूहन्ना 3:22, और 4:1-2 में लिखा है की लोगों में यह धारणा थी की प्रभु यीशु औरों को बपतिस्मा दे रहा है; किन्तु 4:2 यह स्पष्ट कर देता है कि यीशु नहीं, उसके शिष्य बपतिस्मा देते थे। प्रभु यीशु के आरंभिक शिष्यों में से कुछ पहले यूहन्ना बपतिस्मा देने वाले के शिष्य थे, फिर वे प्रभु के साथ हो लिए (यूहन्ना 1:37-38)। हमारे आज के अध्ययन के दृष्टिकोण से, यह ध्यान देने योग्य बात है कि प्रभु यीशु ने अपने शिष्यों को बपतिस्मा देने से रोका नहीं; उसने उन्हें यह कर लेने दिया। बाइबल में बाद में हम कहीं पर भी ऐसा कुछ भी लिखा हुआ नहीं पाते हैं कि किसी ने भी प्रभु के शिष्यों के द्वारा दिए गए इस बपतिस्मे के बारे में कुछ भी कहा हो। किसी भी व्यक्ति ने कभी भी ऐसा कुछ भी नहीं कहा की प्रभु के उपस्थिति में, या प्रभु के शिष्यों के द्वारा मिले बपतिस्मे के कारण उन्हें कुछ विशेष प्राप्त हुआ, या कोई अतिरिक्त लाभ हुआ। लेकिन यह तथ्य, की न केवल प्रभु यीशु ने स्वयं बपतिस्मा लिया, बल्कि शिष्यों को भी औरों को देने दिया, हमारे सामने प्रभु की दृष्टि में परमेश्वर की आज्ञाकारिता के परम-महत्व को रखता है। आज, यह प्रभु की आज्ञा है की उसके शिष्य बपतिस्मा लें (मत्ती 28:19)। इसलिए स्वयं प्रभु के द्वारा, तथा उसके शिष्यों के द्वारा दिए गए उदाहरणों से, तथा प्रभु की आज्ञा से यह प्रकट है कि बपतिस्मा लेना व्यक्ति के द्वारा परमेश्वर के निर्देशों के प्रति सचेत और आज्ञाकारी होने का चिह्न है; क्योंकि परमेश्वर ने कहा है, इसलिए यह करना है।
यदि आप एक मसीही विश्वासी हैं, तो कृपया अपने जीवन को जाँच कर देख लें कि आप वास्तव में नया जन्म पाए हुए प्रभु यीशु के शिष्य हैं, पापों से छुड़ाए गए हैं तथा आप ने अपना जीवन प्रभु की आज्ञाकारिता में जीने के लिए उस को समर्पित किया है। आपके लिए यह अनिवार्य है कि आप परमेश्वर के वचन की सही शिक्षाओं को जानने के द्वारा एक परिपक्व विश्वासी बनें, तथा सभी शिक्षाओं को वचन की कसौटी पर परखने, और बेरिया के विश्वासियों के समान, लोगों की बातों को पहले वचन से जाँचने और उनकी सत्यता को निश्चित करने के बाद ही उनको स्वीकार करने और मानने वाले बनें (प्रेरितों 17:11; 1 थिस्सलुनीकियों 5:21)। अन्यथा शैतान द्वारा छोड़े हुए झूठे प्रेरित और भविष्यद्वक्ता मसीह के सेवक बन कर (2 कुरिन्थियों 11:13-15) अपनी ठग विद्या और चतुराई से आपको प्रभु के लिए अप्रभावी कर देंगे और आप के मसीही जीवन एवं आशीषों का नाश कर देंगे।
यदि आपने प्रभु की शिष्यता को अभी तक स्वीकार नहीं किया है, तो अपने अनन्त जीवन और स्वर्गीय आशीषों को सुनिश्चित करने के लिए अभी प्रभु यीशु के पक्ष में अपना निर्णय कर लीजिए। जहाँ प्रभु की आज्ञाकारिता है, उसके वचन की बातों का आदर और पालन है, वहाँ प्रभु की आशीष और सुरक्षा भी है। प्रभु यीशु से अपने पापों के लिए क्षमा माँगकर, स्वेच्छा से तथा सच्चे मन से अपने आप को उसकी अधीनता में समर्पित कर दीजिए - उद्धार और स्वर्गीय जीवन का यही एकमात्र मार्ग है। आपको स्वेच्छा और सच्चे मन से प्रभु यीशु मसीह से केवल एक छोटी प्रार्थना करनी है, और साथ ही अपना जीवन उसे पूर्णतः समर्पित करना है। आप यह प्रार्थना और समर्पण कुछ इस प्रकार से भी कर सकते हैं, “प्रभु यीशु मैं आपका धन्यवाद करता हूँ कि आपने मेरे पापों की क्षमा और समाधान के लिए उन पापों को अपने ऊपर लिया, उनके कारण मेरे स्थान पर क्रूस की मृत्यु सही, गाड़े गए, और मेरे उद्धार के लिए आप तीसरे दिन जी भी उठे, और आज जीवित प्रभु परमेश्वर हैं। कृपया मेरे पापों को क्षमा करें, मुझे अपनी शरण में लें, और मुझे अपना शिष्य बना लें। मैं अपना जीवन आप के हाथों में समर्पित करता हूँ।” सच्चे और समर्पित मन से की गई आपकी एक प्रार्थना आपके वर्तमान तथा भविष्य को, इस लोक के और परलोक के जीवन को, अनन्तकाल के लिए स्वर्गीय एवं आशीषित बना देगी।

The Purpose of Baptism (3) - Obedience
In the previous two articles we have been studying about the purpose of baptism. God had John, the forerunner of His Son, baptize people in water, as an integral part of his ministry. In other words, from God’s point of view, baptism was important to prepare the people to understand and accept the ministry of the Savior Lord Jesus Christ - the Savior of the world, and John the Baptist has himself said so (John 1:31). We have seen that no one opposed John or questioned him about starting something not mentioned in the then Scriptures, i.e., our present-day Old Testament; rather, even the Pharisees and Sadducees came to him to be baptized. So far, from the Biblical accounts of baptism, we have seen two purposes - first, Witnessing, i.e., to publicly and externally witness about the inner change brought about by confession and repentance for sins; second, Preparation, i.e., to prepare people through this confession and repentance to understand and get ready for the accounting and judgment of God, which will come upon everyone. Today we will look at the third purpose, Obedience to God.
We see in the Gospel accounts that even the Lord Jesus did not take baptism just where He was, but came all the way from Galilee to Bethabara, the place where John was baptizing, to be baptized, at around thirty years of age (Matthew 3:13, John 1:28; Luke 3:23). A look at the map shows that this was a considerable distance, but Jesus travelled the distance to be baptized, before He began His ministry. Though John and Jesus were related, through their respective mothers (Luke 1:36), but apparently, the true identity of the Lord Jesus had not been revealed to John, neither by God nor by the Lord Jesus, till Jesus came to him to be baptized. It is only at the time of the Lord’s baptism that John came to know who Jesus actually was, and he then addresses Him as “The Lamb of God that takes away the sins of the world” (John 1:29-36). Prior to this, all that John knew was that the Messiah was about to come (Matthew 3:11-12; John 1:26-27), his ministry was to prepare the people to recognize and accept him, and baptizing people was a necessary part of that ministry (John 1:31). Therefore, when the Lord Jesus came to John to be baptized, not because of their familial relationship, but to fulfill the ministries entrusted by God to each of them. Now, John, being made aware of who the one standing before him and asking for baptism actually was, quite understandably, John’s response was: And John tried to prevent Him, saying, "I need to be baptized by You, and are You coming to me?" (Matthew 3:14). What is important to note for our study is the reply the Lord Jesus gave to John, “But Jesus answered and said to him, "Permit it to be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness." Then he allowed Him” (Matthew 3:15).
The Lord Jesus was sinless; He did not need to repent for anything; He did not need to be made righteous, He already was righteous. When Jesus came to him, John not only declared Him as the Son of God, but also asked that Lord Jesus baptize him, instead of taking baptism from him. Yet the Lord Jesus asked John to baptize Him - to fulfill all righteousness, i.e., in obedience to God the Father, subjected Himself to other’s God given ministry. This unflinching obedience to God was something the Lord Jesus affirmed repeatedly during His earthly ministry (John 4:34; 5:30; 6:38; 8:29). There was nothing that baptism could do to embellish the Lord’s holiness and being sinless. But God the Son still took baptism from a human being because it was God the Father’s will. Notice, the Lord Jesus did not say “thus it is fitting for me to become righteous”; instead, He said “thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” It was John’s ministry, his God assigned work to baptize people, and he too had to do it in obedience to God. Therefore, the Lord Jesus included him in the response by using “us”. Also, instead of saying “becoming righteous”, the Lord said “to fulfill all righteousness”, i.e., “to fulfill what God has said is to be done.”
In John 3:22, and 4:1-2, we see mentioned that people thought that the Lord Jesus baptized others; but 4:2 clarifies that not Jesus but His disciples baptized. Some of the initial disciples of the Lord Jesus were John the Baptist’s disciples initially, but then switched over to the Lord Jesus (John 1:37-38). But from the point of view of our study today, it is important to take note that the Lord Jesus did not stop His disciples from baptizing; He allowed them to do so. Later on, nowhere in the Bible do we ever find any mention of anyone speaking of anything related to this baptism given by the Lord’s disciples. No person ever said that their being baptized in the presence of the Lord Jesus, or by the disciples of the Lord Jesus, had given them anything extra, or any special advantage. But the very fact that the Lord Jesus not only took baptism Himself, but also allowed His disciples to continue baptizing speaks to us of the high value the Lord held for obeying God. Today, it is the Lord’s commandment that His disciples take baptism (Matthew 28:19). So, from the example of the Lord Jesus, and His disciples, and from His commandment, it is evident that baptism is a way of expressing a person’s being aware of what God has said, and fulfilling it in obedience to God.
If you are a Christian Believer, then please examine your life and make sure that you are actually a Born-Again disciple of the Lord, i.e., are redeemed from your sins, have submitted and surrendered your life to the Lord Jesus to live in obedience to Him and His Word. Whoever may be the preacher or teacher, but you should always, like the Berean Believers, first cross-check and test all teachings that you receive, from the Word of God. Only after ascertaining the truth and veracity of the teachings brought to you by men, should you accept and obey them (Acts 17:11; 1 Thessalonians 5:21). If you do not do this, the false apostles and prophets sent by Satan as ministers of Christ (2 Corinthians 11:13-15), will by their trickery, cunningness, and craftiness render you ineffective for the Lord and cause severe damage to your Christian life and your rewards.
If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord Jesus, then to ensure your eternal life and heavenly rewards, take a decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now. Wherever there is surrender and obedience towards the Lord Jesus, the Lord’s blessings and safety are also there. If you are still not Born Again, have not obtained salvation, or have not asked the Lord Jesus for forgiveness for your sins, then you have the opportunity to do so right now. A short prayer said voluntarily with a sincere heart, with heartfelt repentance for your sins, and a fully submissive attitude, “Lord Jesus, I confess that I have disobeyed You, and have knowingly or unknowingly, in mind, in thought, in attitude, and in deeds, committed sins. I believe that you have fully borne the punishment of my sins by your sacrifice on the cross, and have paid the full price of those sins for all eternity. Please forgive my sins, change my heart and mind towards you, and make me your disciple, take me with you." God longs for your company and wants to see you blessed, but to make this possible, is your personal decision. Will you not say this prayer now, while you have the time and opportunity to do so - the decision is yours.
