व्यवस्था पालन में औपचारिकता के प्रभाव
पिछले लेख में हमने देखा था कि यद्यपि परमेश्वर द्वारा मूसा में होकर इस्राएलियों को दी गई उसकी व्यवस्था में ये बातें थीं, किन्तु वास्तव में व्यवस्था रीति-रिवाजों और परंपराओं का पालन करना, या पर्व मनाना, या भेंट-बलिदान चढ़ाना नहीं है। व्यवस्था परमेश्वर और मनुष्यों के साथ परमेश्वर द्वारा बताए गए संबंधों को बनाना और निभाना है। परमेश्वर के साथ सही संबंध में होने और बने रहने का अर्थ उससे सारे मन, ध्यान, विचार, और धन से प्रेम करना तथा उसे पूर्णतः समर्पित रहना और उसकी आज्ञाकारिता में रहना है। जब परमेश्वर के साथ संबंध ठीक होगा, तो यह मनुष्यों के साथ भी सही संबंध बनाने और निभाने में भी प्रकट होगा। यही व्यवस्था का पालन है। प्रकट है कि इसमें किसी प्रकार की औपचारिकता का कोई स्थान नहीं है। औपचारिकता केवल वहीं होती है जहाँ व्यवस्था को रीति-रिवाजों और परंपराओं का पालन करना, या पर्व मनाना, या भेंट-बलिदान चढ़ाना मान लिया जाता है, और फिर निर्धारित समय पर निर्धारित विधि के अनुसार ये बातें पूरी कर दी जाती हैं, चाहे व्यक्ति की उन में कैसी और कितनी भी आस्था या श्रद्धा हो, या न हो। साथ ही हमने यह भी देखा और समझा था कि चाहे पुराने नियम के लोग हों अथवा नए नियम के, जिन्होंने भी परमेश्वर के साथ सही संबंध बनाए, वे सभी उसे स्वीकार्य हुए, उन सभी ने जीवन में प्रवेश किया, जैसा परमेश्वर ने आश्वस्त किया है कि व्यवस्था के पालन के द्वारा लोगों को जीवन में प्रवेश मिलेगा।
लेकिन व्यवस्था को उसके सही स्वरूप, परमेश्वर और मनुष्यों के साथ सही संबंधों को बनाने और निभाने के लिए परमेश्वर के निर्देशों में देखने और मानने के स्थान पर यदि व्यक्ति उसे रीति-रिवाजों और परंपराओं का पालन करना, या पर्व मनाना, या भेंट-बलिदान चढ़ाना आदि मानकर, और इनका भी सही मनसा के साथ निर्वाह नहीं करता है, तो यह उसके लिए बेचैनी और अशान्ति का कारण बन जाता है। हम इस बात को परमेश्वर के वचन बाइबल के कुछ उदाहरणों से देखते हैं।
अनन्त जीवन की लालसा रखने वाले एक धनी जवान अधिकारी से हुई प्रभु की बातचीत (मत्ती 19:16-22) से दो बातें स्पष्ट हैं; पहली बात तो यह कि वह अभी भी अपने जीवन में कुछ कमी अनुभव कर रहा था। यद्यपि वह व्यक्ति, अपनी दृष्टि और मानकों के अनुसार, बचपन से ही व्यवस्था का पालन करता आ रहा था; किन्तु प्रभु से किया गया उसका प्रश्न, और प्रभु को दिया गया उसका प्रत्युत्तर दिखाते हैं कि अपने अन्दर वह जानता था कि उसके द्वारा किए गए “व्यवस्था पालन” ने उसे परमेश्वर को स्वीकार्य नहीं बनाया है, वह अभी भी अनन्त जीवन से दूर है। दूसरी बात, प्रभु द्वारा उसे दिए गए निर्देशों से यह प्रकट है कि उसका “व्यवस्था पालन” अधूरा था, और सही मनसा से नहीं था। ध्यान कीजिए, मत्ती 19:18-19 में प्रभु यीशु जिन आज्ञाओं के पालन की बात करता है, वे दस आज्ञाओं का भाग तो हैं, किन्तु इनमें पहली चार आज्ञाओं का, जो मनुष्यों के परमेश्वर के साथ संबंध के बारे में हैं, कोई उल्लेख नहीं है। और न ही उस व्यक्ति ने प्रभु से यह कहा कि वह न केवल प्रभु द्वारा कही जा रही छः आज्ञाओं का पालन करता आया है, वरन उन पहली चार आज्ञाओं का भी पालन करता आया है, जिनका उल्लेख प्रभु ने नहीं किया है। संकेत प्रकट है कि उस व्यक्ति के जीवन में इन पहली चार आज्ञाओं का पालन था ही नहीं। फिर इस वार्तालाप के अंत की ओर जब प्रभु उससे अपनी सारी संपत्ति बेचकर कंगालों में वितरित करने और प्रभु के पीछे हो लेने को कहता है, तब वह व्यक्ति यह नहीं कर सका (मत्ती 19:21-22)। अर्थात, वह न तो परमेश्वर से अपने सारे तन-मन-धन से प्रेम करता था और न ही मनुष्यों से प्रेम करता था। मनुष्यों से संबंधों को सिखाने वाली आज्ञाओं के पालन के बावजूद, उस व्यक्ति में मनुष्यों के प्रति सच्चा प्रेम नहीं था। लेकिन उसके जीवन में सांसारिक लाभ और संपत्ति का लालच अवश्य था। जो दिखाता है कि, वह संपूर्ण व्यवस्था का, सच्चे मन से, सही मनसा के साथ, पालन नहीं कर रहा था। इसी से प्रकट हो जाता है कि उसका “बचपन से आज्ञाओं को मानते चले आने” का दावा कितना खोखला था, एक औपचारिकता से अधिक कुछ नहीं था।
इसी प्रकार से यहूदियों का एक प्रधान धर्म-गुरु, फरीसियों का सरदार, निकुदेमुस भी रात के समय प्रभु यीशु के पास मन में कुछ प्रश्न लिए हुए आया था (यूहन्ना 3:1-21)। वह अभी प्रभु से बात करने के लिए भूमिका बांध ही रहा था (पद 2) कि प्रभु ने उसके मन की बात के अनुसार उसे उत्तर भी दे दिया (पद 3) - परमेश्वर का राज्य देखने के लिए उसे नया जन्म लेना अनिवार्य था। उसके धर्म-ज्ञान, उसके धार्मिक ओहदे ओर इज़्ज़त ने उसे परमेश्वर की दृष्टि में स्वीकार्य नहीं बनाया था। निकुदेमुस फिर तर्क देने का प्रयास करता है (पद 4) और प्रभु फिर उसकी बात काटकर एक बार फिर स्वर्ग के राज्य में उसके प्रवेश के लिए नया जन्म लेने की अनिवार्यता को कह देता है (पद 5), और फिर उसे शरीर और आत्मा से जन्मे व्यक्तियों में भिन्नता के चिह्न बताता है (पद 6-8)। तात्पर्य स्पष्ट है, कि उसके सारे धर्म-ज्ञान और ओहदे के बावजूद, वह अभी तक परमेश्वर के साथ सही संबंध में नहीं आया था। उसके मन में अभी भी संदेह था कि यह कैसे हो सकता है (पद 9)। वह इन बातों को जानता था, किन्तु इनका पालन नहीं करता था, जैसा प्रभु ने उसे उलाहना देते हुए पद 10 में कहा। पद 10 में, ध्यान कीजिए प्रभु ने यह नहीं कहा कि “क्या तू इन बातों को नहीं जानता है?” वरन कहा, “... तू इस्राएलियों का गुरु हो कर भी क्या इन बातों को नहीं समझता?” अर्थात, वह इन बातों को जानता था, किन्तु समझता नहीं था, इसीलिए पालन भी नहीं करता था। धर्म-गुरु होने के नाते, वह लोगों को परमेश्वर की बातें बताता और सिखाता था, किन्तु उसके अपने जीवन में बेचैनी थी, क्योंकि वह धर्म की औपचारिकता तो निभा रहा था, किन्तु परमेश्वर के साथ सही संबंधों में नहीं आया था, जिनके बारे में प्रभु उसे पद 11-21 में बताता है। इसके लिए उसे परमेश्वर के प्रति पश्चाताप और समर्पण की आवश्यकता थी; और प्रभु उसे यही दिखा रहा था।
पौलुस जो पहले शाऊल के नाम से जाना जाता था, वह भी एक बहुत ज्ञानवान और परमेश्वर के लिए बहुत उत्साह रखने वाला फरीसी था। उसकी दृष्टि में जो भी परमेश्वर के विरुद्ध था, उसे वह सहन नहीं कर सकता था, उन्हें पकड़ कर दण्ड देने में वह बहुत सक्रिय रहता था (प्रेरितों 8:3; 9:1)। उसका यह व्यवहार, परमेश्वर के वचन और व्यवस्था के बारे में उसे मिली शिक्षा और समझ के द्वारा था। लेकिन प्रभु यीशु मसीह से साक्षात्कार और वार्तालाप होने के बाद (प्रेरितों 9:3-9) उसके जीवन और दृष्टिकोण में जो आधार-भूत परिवर्तन आया, उससे उसने व्यवस्था पालन की अपनी समझ की व्यर्थता को पहचाना, और उसे छोड़ दिया। उसने तुरंत ही परमेश्वर के साथ अपने संबंध ठीक किए, और परिणामस्वरूप मनुष्यों के साथ भी उसके संबंध और व्यवहार सही हो गया। फिलिप्पी की मसीही मण्डली को लिखी अपनी पत्री में, वह अपने पुराने व्यवहार की बातों को, जिन पर वह पहले बहुत घमण्ड करता था, अब हानि की बातें और कूड़ा कहता है, और उनके स्थान पर प्रभु यीशु की समानता में बढ़ने को ही प्राथमिकता देता है (फिलिप्पियों 3:7-11)।
वचन के ये तीनों उदाहरण दिखाते हैं कि जो “व्यवस्था” का गलत अर्थ रखते हैं, और अनुचित मनसा से उसका पालन करते हैं, उनके लिए वह व्यवस्था बेचैनी और अशान्ति ही उत्पन्न करती है, परमेश्वर की निकटता में होने और उसकी शांति उनके साथ उन्हें उपलब्ध होने का एहसास नहीं। लेकिन जैसे ही व्यक्ति पश्चाताप और पाप क्षमा के द्वारा परमेश्वर के साथ सही संबंध में आता है, स्वतः ही उसका दृष्टिकोण भी बदल जाता है, और मनुष्यों के साथ उसके संबंध भी सुधरने जाते हैं। उसका बदला हुआ जीवन इस बात की गवाही देता है कि वह अब जीवन में प्रवेश कर गया है। यदि निकुदेमुस और पौलुस जैसे धर्म के ज्ञानियों को पश्चाताप और पापों की क्षमा पाना अनिवार्य था, तो हमारे लिए यह कितना अधिक आवश्यक और अनिवार्य है, आप स्वयं समझ सकते हैं।
अगले लेख में हम व्यवस्था की उपयोगिता के बारे में देखेंगे। अभी के लिए, यदि आप मसीही हैं, और अपने आप को किसी भी प्रकार की “व्यवस्था” - वह चाहे परमेश्वर की हो, या आपके धर्म, मत, समुदाय, या डिनॉमिनेशन की हो - के पालन के द्वारा धर्मी बनाने के, और अपने शरीर के कार्यों के द्वारा अपने आप को परमेश्वर को स्वीकार्य बनाने के प्रयासों में लगे हैं; तो ध्यान देकर समझ लीजिए कि परमेश्वर का वचन स्पष्ट बताता है कि व्यवस्था के पालन के द्वारा नहीं, वरन, परमेश्वर के दिए हुए पश्चाताप और समर्पण करने के मार्ग का पालन करने के द्वारा ही आप परमेश्वर की दृष्टि में धर्मी और उसे स्वीकार्य बन सकते हैं। अभी समय और अवसर रहते सही मार्ग अपना लें, और व्यर्थ तथा निष्फल मार्ग को छोड़ दें।
यदि आपने प्रभु की शिष्यता को अभी तक स्वीकार नहीं किया है, तो अपने अनन्त जीवन और स्वर्गीय आशीषों को सुनिश्चित करने के लिए अभी प्रभु यीशु के पक्ष में अपना निर्णय कर लीजिए। जहाँ प्रभु की आज्ञाकारिता है, उसके वचन की बातों का आदर और पालन है, वहाँ प्रभु की आशीष और सुरक्षा भी है। प्रभु यीशु से अपने पापों के लिए क्षमा माँगकर, स्वेच्छा से तथा सच्चे मन से अपने आप को उसकी अधीनता में समर्पित कर दीजिए - उद्धार और स्वर्गीय जीवन का यही एकमात्र मार्ग है। आपको स्वेच्छा और सच्चे मन से प्रभु यीशु मसीह से केवल एक छोटी प्रार्थना करनी है, और साथ ही अपना जीवन उसे पूर्णतः समर्पित करना है। आप यह प्रार्थना और समर्पण कुछ इस प्रकार से भी कर सकते हैं, “प्रभु यीशु मैं आपका धन्यवाद करता हूँ कि आपने मेरे पापों की क्षमा और समाधान के लिए उन पापों को अपने ऊपर लिया, उनके कारण मेरे स्थान पर क्रूस की मृत्यु सही, गाड़े गए, और मेरे उद्धार के लिए आप तीसरे दिन जी भी उठे, और आज जीवित प्रभु परमेश्वर हैं। कृपया मेरे पापों को क्षमा करें, मुझे अपनी शरण में लें, और मुझे अपना शिष्य बना लें। मैं अपना जीवन आप के हाथों में समर्पित करता हूँ।” सच्चे और समर्पित मन से की गई आपकी एक प्रार्थना आपके वर्तमान तथा भविष्य को, इस लोक के और परलोक के जीवन को, अनन्तकाल के लिए स्वर्गीय एवं आशीषित बना देगी।

Effects of formality in Fulfilling the Law
In the previous article we saw that although they were a part of God's Law given to the Israelites through Moses, nevertheless, the Law actually is not the observance of customs and traditions, or the celebration of festivals, or the offering of gifts and sacrifices. The Law is the coming into and continuing in the right relationship with God and men, in the manner asked by God. To be in, and to remain in the right relationship with God means to love Him with all your body, soul, and spirit, and your possessions as well; and to be completely committed to Him, to be obedient to Him. When man’s relationship with God is right, it will also manifest in building and maintaining the right relationship with fellow human beings. This is what fulfilling the Law actually means. Obviously, there is no place for any kind of formal observances in this. Formal observances can only occur if the Law is assumed to be the observance of customs and traditions, or the celebration of a festival, or the offering of gifts and sacrifices. In that case, these things are carried out according to the prescribed procedure at the appointed time, regardless of the individual’s faith or belief in them, qualitatively or quantitatively. We have also seen and understood that whether it were the people of the Old Testament or of the New Testament, whoever came into a proper relationship with God in His prescribed manner, also became acceptable to Him, and they all entered life, just as God had assured that they would. That is to say that by fulfilling the Law people did get the entry into life, as is stated in God’s Word.
But if instead of accepting and obeying the Law, i.e., God's instructions to come into and maintain the right relationship with God and humans, in its right form, if one only observes it through fulfilling customs and traditions, or celebrating festivals, or by offering gifts and sacrifices, and does not maintain a right attitude even with that, then it leads to restlessness and a lack of peace in his life. We see this illustrated through a few examples from God's Word, the Bible.
Two things are clear from the Lord's conversation with the Rich Young Ruler who had come to the Lord seeking eternal life (Matthew 19:16-22). Firstly, although, according to his self-assessment and his own standards, he had been following the Law since his childhood, yet he still felt a serious lack of something in his life. His question to the Lord, and also his response to the Lord’s answer, show that he well knew within himself that his "keeping the Law" had not made him acceptable to God; he was still far from eternal life. Secondly, it is evident from the instructions given to him by the Lord that his "keeping the Law" was neither complete, nor done with the right attitude. Take note, the commandments that the Lord Jesus speaks of to him in Matthew 19:18-19, they are all a part of the Ten Commandments. But there is no mention here of the first four commandments, which are about man's relationship with God. Moreover, neither did he bother to inform the Lord that not only had he been following the six commandments stated by the Lord, but had also followed those first four commandments that the Lord had not mentioned. A clear indication that there was no observance of these first four commandments in that person's life. Then, towards the end of this conversation, when the Lord asks him to sell all his possessions, distribute his wealth to the poor, and follow the Lord, the man could not do it (Matthew 19:21-22). That is, he neither loved God with all his body, mind and possessions, nor did he love men enough to care for them. Though he claimed to have obeyed the commandments that taught about relationships with fellow humans, the man did not have true concern for his fellow humans. But a compelling desire for worldly gains and wealth was definitely there in his life. All these things show that, he was neither following the whole Law, nor whatever part he was following, was with sincerity, and the right attitude. This exposes the hollowness his claim of "keeping the commandments from childhood"; and makes it evident that his claim was nothing more than living a formality.
Similarly, Nicodemus, a very senior religious official of the Jews, the ruler of the Pharisees, also came to the Lord Jesus during the night with some questions in his mind (John 3:1-21). He was just preparing the grounds to tell his troubling thoughts to the Lord (verse 2) when the Lord interjected and gave him the answer to what was troubling his mind - whether or not he would enter the Kingdom of God (verse 3) - the Lord told him point-blank, he had to be Born Again to even see the kingdom of God. Neither his religious knowledge, nor his religious status and prestige had made him acceptable to God. Nicodemus tries to reason again (v. 4) and the Lord again cuts him off and again pointedly says that he must be Born Again for him to enter into the kingdom of heaven (v. 5). And from here onwards the Lord tells him how to identify those born naturally and those Born Again by the Spirit of God (verses 6-8). The implication is clear, that despite all his theology and religious status, he had not yet come into a proper relationship with God, and he felt within himself the restlessness of lacking this right relationship with God. But he still had doubts about how this could happen (verse 9). Though he knew these things, but did not obey them, as is clear from the Lord’s rebuke for him (verse 10). In verse 10, notice that the Lord did not say, "Don't you know these things?" But he said, "... you, being the teacher of the Israelites, do you not understand these things?" That is, though he knew these things, but did not understand their practical application, that is why he did not fulfill them. As a religious leader, he used to speak of and teach the things of God to the people. But, while he was engaged in performing the formalities of religion, there was deep restlessness in his own life. Since his formal engagement in fulfilling the obligations of his religion had not brought him into the right relationship with God. To come into this right and satisfying relationship, he needed to be Born Again, i.e., to repent of his sins and submit himself fully to God. And this is what the Lord was showing and explaining to him in verse 11-21.
Paul, formerly known as Saul, was also a very knowledgeable Pharisee and was very zealous for God. He could not bear anything against God, as per his own understanding, and he was very active in capturing and punishing those whom he thought were going contrary to God’s Law (Acts 8:3; 9:1). His behavior was based upon the teachings he received and the understanding about God's Word and Law he had developed. But his vision of the Lord Jesus Christ and conversation with Him on the road to Damascus brought about a fundamental change in his life and outlook (Acts 9:3-9); it made him recognize the futility of his own understanding of keeping the Law, and he let go of his vain understanding and zealousness, immediately. He immediately corrected his relationship with God, and consequently his relationship, behavior, and attitude towards fellow human beings also got corrected. In his letter to the Christians in Philippi, he refers to these old attitudes, which he once was proud of, but now speaks of them disparagingly, calling them harmful and rubbish, preferring instead to grow in the likeness of the Lord Jesus. (Philippians 3:7-11).
These three examples of Scripture show that for those who misinterpret and misunderstand the "Law," and follow it inappropriately, that Law only creates restlessness and lack of peace in their lives; they do not have a sense of being in close proximity to God and of having His peace in their lives. But as soon as a person comes into the right relationship with God through repentance and seeking forgiveness of his sins, automatically his outlook also changes, and his relationship with fellow humans also changes, and improves. His changed life bears open and clear testimony to the fact that he has now entered life - the eternal life promised by God. If for religious scholars like Nicodemus and Paul it was mandatory to repent and seek forgiveness of sins, then you can see for yourself how necessary and imperative it is for us as well.
In the next article, we will look at the utility of the Law. For now, if you are a Christian, and are hoping to justify yourself by observing any sort of "law" — whether that of God, or of your religion, creed, community, or denomination — and are trying to make yourself acceptable to God by being ‘good’ through the works of the flesh; then pay heed and understand that God's Word clearly states that you become righteous and acceptable to God, not by keeping the Law, but only by following the God given path of repentance and submission to the Lord. Therefore, while you have the time and the opportunity, take the right decision, decide on the right path, and leave the useless and fruitless path.
If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. By asking the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily submit yourself sincerely and with a committed heart to his Lordship in your life - this is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. You have to say only a short but sincere prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ, willingly and meaningfully, while simultaneously completely committing your life to Him. You can say this prayer of repentance and submission in a manner something like this, “Lord Jesus, I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself for their forgiveness and because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, you rose again on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God. Please forgive my sins, take me under your shelter, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and submissive heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.
