मसीही विश्वासी के जीवन में अलगाव

हम देखते आ रहे हैं कि पतरस द्वारा पिन्तेकुस्त के दिन किए गए सुसमाचार प्रचार से संसार भर से धार्मिक पर्व मनाने और व्यवस्था की विधि को पूरा करने के लिए आए हुए “भक्त यहूदियों” के हृदय छिद गए, और उन्हें इस बात का बोध हुआ कि उनकी यह धर्म-कर्म-रस्म के निर्वाह की धार्मिकता उन्हें उद्धार या नया जन्म देने और परमेश्वर को स्वीकार्य बनाने के लिए पर्याप्त नहीं है। तब उन्होंने पतरस और अन्य प्रेरितों से इसके समाधान के विषय प्रश्न पूछा, और पतरस ने उद्धार या नया जन्म प्राप्त करने के लिए उन्हें प्रभु यीशु की शिष्यता का मार्ग बताया, जिसमें सात व्यावहारिक बातें थीं। उनमें से पाँच बातों को तो, जिन्हें हम पहले देख चुके हैं, मसीही या ईसाई धर्म-कर्म-रस्म के निर्वाह की मानसिकता रखने वालों ने एक औपचारिक रस्म बना दिया है, और उन औपचारिकताओं के निर्वाह के कारण वे अपने आप परमेश्वर को स्वीकार्य और धर्मी समझते हैं। पतरस द्वारा उन भक्त यहूदियों को प्रेरितों 2:38 में दिए गए उत्तर का पहला कदम था मन-फिराना, अर्थात, अपने-अपने पापों से पश्चाताप करना और प्रभु का शिष्य हो जाने पर अपने पुराने जीवन की पापमय प्रवृत्तियों और व्यवहार से हट जाना, जिसे हम पिछले दो लेखों में दख चुके हैं।

दूसरा कदम था अपने इस पश्चाताप और प्रभु यीशु मसीह का अनुयायी हो जाने के निर्णय को बपतिस्मे के द्वारा सार्वजनिक रीति से प्रकट करना; प्रभु का शिष्य बन जाने की गवाही को लोगों के सामने रखना। इस गवाही का वास्तविक स्वरूप भी धर्म के निर्वाह के लिए बिगाड़ दिया गया है, और साथ ही इसे एक रस्म, एक औपचारिकता बना दिया गया है। और अब धर्म-कर्म का निर्वाह करने में रुचि रखने वालों को उनके धर्म के अगुवों द्वारा, बाइबल की शिक्षाओं के विपरीत, यही बताया और जताया जाता है कि बपतिस्मा हो जाने से परमेश्वर भी उस व्यक्ति को स्वीकार करने के लिए बाध्य हो गया है।

इसके बाद पद 40 में तीसरा कदम बताया गया है “उसने बहुत और बातों में भी गवाही दे देकर समझाया कि अपने आप को इस टेढ़ी जाति से बचाओ” (प्रेरितों 2:40)। मूल यूनानी भाषा के जिन शब्दों का हिन्दी अनुवाद “टेढ़ी जाति” किया गया है, उनका शब्दार्थ है “टेढ़ी/विकृत पीढ़ी”। इसे अंग्रेजी अनुवादों में “perverse generation” या “corrupt  generation” लिखा गया है, जो “टेढ़ी/विकृत पीढ़ी” अनुवाद के अनुरूप है। कहने का अभिप्राय था, और है, कि जो व्यक्ति प्रभु यीशु मसीह का शिष्य बनकर उनके पीछे चलते रहने का निर्णय ले, वह साथ ही यह निर्णय भी ले कि अब वह अपने समकालीन संसार के भ्रष्ट और प्रभु के प्रतिकूल व्यवहार और जीवन से अपने आप को पृथक कर लेगा; संसार और उसकी बातों के प्रति उसका जीवन एक अलगाव का जीवन रहेगा। अर्थात, वह अपने आप को संसार और संसार की बातों से दूषित नहीं होने देगा, वरन प्रभु यीशु मसीह की आज्ञाकारिता में उसी के लिए जीएगा “और वह इस निमित्त सब के लिये मरा, कि जो जीवित हैं, वे आगे को अपने लिये न जीएं परन्तु उसके लिये जो उन के लिये मरा और फिर जी उठा” (2 कुरिन्थियों 5:15)।

पाप और उद्धार से संबंधित बातों की चर्चा के समय हम देख चुके हैं कि पापों की क्षमा और उद्धार प्राप्त करने के साथ ही, तुरंत ही उद्धार या नया जन्म पाए हुए व्यक्ति की देह परमेश्वर पवित्र आत्मा का मंदिर बन जाती है और पवित्र आत्मा उसी क्षण से, उसकी सहायता और मसीही विश्वास में उन्नति और शिक्षा के लिए (यूहन्ना 14:26), उस नए जन्मे हुए जन में आकर निवास करने लगता है, “और उसी में तुम पर भी जब तुम ने सत्य का वचन सुना, जो तुम्हारे उद्धार का सुसमाचार है, और जिस पर तुम ने विश्वास किया, प्रतिज्ञा किए हुए पवित्र आत्मा की छाप लगी” (इफिसियों 1:13)। परमेश्वर पवित्र आत्मा के इस मंदिर को स्वच्छ और पवित्र रखना उस उद्धार पाए हुए व्यक्ति की ज़िम्मेदारी है “क्या तुम नहीं जानते, कि तुम परमेश्वर का मन्दिर हो, और परमेश्वर का आत्मा तुम में वास करता है? यदि कोई परमेश्वर के मन्दिर को नाश करेगा तो परमेश्वर उसे नाश करेगा; क्योंकि परमेश्वर का मन्दिर पवित्र है, और वह तुम हो” (1 कुरिन्थियों 3:16-17)। इस ज़िम्मेदारी के निर्वाह के लिए पवित्र आत्मा स्वयं व्यक्ति की सहायता करता है कि वह शारीरिक और सांसारिक अभिलाषाओं से हटकर, एक पवित्र और परमेश्वर को महिमा देने वाला जीवन जीएं “पर मैं कहता हूं, आत्मा के अनुसार चलो, तो तुम शरीर की लालसा किसी रीति से पूरी न करोगे। क्योंकि शरीर आत्मा के विरोध में, और आत्मा शरीर के विरोध में लालसा करती है, और ये एक दूसरे के विरोधी हैं; इसलिये कि जो तुम करना चाहते हो वह न करने पाओ” (गलातियों 5:16-17); “और जो मसीह यीशु के हैं, उन्होंने शरीर को उस की लालसाओं और अभिलाषाओं समेत क्रूस पर चढ़ा दिया है। यदि हम आत्मा के द्वारा जीवित हैं, तो आत्मा के अनुसार चलें भी” (गलातियों 5:24-25)।

पौलुस प्रेरित ने पवित्र आत्मा की अगुवाई में रोम के मसीही विश्वासियों को लिखा “इसलिये हे भाइयों, मैं तुम से परमेश्वर की दया स्मरण दिला कर बिनती करता हूं, कि अपने शरीरों को जीवित, और पवित्र, और परमेश्वर को भावता हुआ बलिदान कर के चढ़ाओ: यही तुम्हारी आत्मिक सेवा है। और इस संसार के सदृश न बनो; परन्तु तुम्हारी बुद्धि के नये हो जाने से तुम्हारा चाल-चलन भी बदलता जाए, जिस से तुम परमेश्वर की भली, और भावती, और सिद्ध इच्छा अनुभव से मालूम करते रहो” (रोमियों 12:1-2)। यहाँ तीन मुख्य बातें हमारे ध्यान देने के लिए हैं: (i) प्रत्येक मसीही विश्वासी की आत्मिक सेवा, उसके द्वारा अपने आप को परमेश्वर सम्मुख बलिदान करके चढ़ाना है। हम पुराने नियम से जानते हैं कि जो बलिदान में परमेश्वर को चढ़ा दिया गया, वह फिर और किसी सांसारिक काम में प्रयोग नहीं किया जा सकता है। (ii) मसीही विश्वासी को संसार के सदृश्य नहीं बनना है; अर्थात सांसारिकता की बातों से और संसार के लोगों के अनुरूप व्यवहार से बच कर रहना है। उद्धार पा लेने के बाद हुए मन परिवर्तन का प्रमाण चाल-चलन में दिखने वाला परिवर्तन है। (iii) जो अपने आप को परमेश्वर को समर्पित कर के, अपने उस समर्पण एवं मन परिवर्तन को अपने बदले हुए चाल-चलन से संसार के समक्ष दिखाएंगे, वे फिर परमेश्वर की इच्छा को व्यक्तिगत अनुभवों से जानने वाले हो जाएंगे; अर्थात परमेश्वर की इच्छा उन पर प्रकट रहेगी।

तो क्या इस अलगाव, इस पृथक रहने का अर्थ है कि मसीही विश्वासी संसार के साथ कोई व्यवहार, कोई संपर्क नहीं रख सकता है? इस प्रश्न का उत्तर हम कल देखेंगे। किन्तु यदि आप अभी भी संसार के साथ और संसार के समान जी रहे हैं, तो फिर संसार के साथ और संसार के समान विनाश में भी जाना पड़ेगा, क्योंकि संसार का मित्र बनना परमेश्वर का बैर मोल लेना है “हे व्यभिचारिणियो, क्या तुम नहीं जानतीं, कि संसार से मित्रता करनी परमेश्वर से बैर करना है सो जो कोई संसार का मित्र होना चाहता है, वह अपने आप को परमेश्वर का बैरी बनाता है” (याकूब 4:4)। आज और अभी आपके पास अपनी अनन्तकाल की स्थिति को सुधारने का अवसर है। यदि आप अभी भी एक परिवार विशेष में जन्म लेने और बचपन से ही किसी मत अथवा डिनॉमिनेशन, या धर्म के रीति-रिवाज़ों और अनुष्ठानों के निर्वाह के आधार पर अपने आप को मसीही विश्वासी समझ रहे हैं तो आप को अपनी इस गलतफहमी से बाहर निकलने, बाइबल के तथ्यों को समझने और बाइबल की बातों का पालन करने का जीवन जीने की आवश्यकता है, न कि किसी धर्म अथवा डिनॉमिनेशन  की शिक्षा अथवा विश्वास वचन को मानते रहने की। 

प्रभु यीशु से अपने पापों के लिए क्षमा माँगकर, स्वेच्छा से तथा सच्चे मन से अपने आप को उसकी अधीनता में समर्पित कर दीजिए - उद्धार और स्वर्गीय जीवन का यही एकमात्र मार्ग है। आपको स्वेच्छा और सच्चे मन से प्रभु यीशु मसीह से केवल एक छोटी प्रार्थना करनी है, और साथ ही अपना जीवन उसे पूर्णतः समर्पित करना है। आप यह प्रार्थना और समर्पण कुछ इस प्रकार से भी कर सकते हैं, “प्रभु यीशु मैं आपका धन्यवाद करता हूँ कि आपने मेरे पापों की क्षमा और समाधान के लिए उन पापों को अपने ऊपर लिया, उनके कारण मेरे स्थान पर क्रूस की मृत्यु सही, गाड़े गए, और मेरे उद्धार के लिए आप तीसरे दिन जी भी उठे, और आज जीवित प्रभु परमेश्वर हैं। कृपया मेरे पापों को क्षमा करें, मुझे अपनी शरण में लें, और मुझे अपना शिष्य बना लें। मैं अपना जीवन आप के हाथों में समर्पित करता हूँ।” सच्चे और समर्पित मन से की गई आपकी एक प्रार्थना आपके वर्तमान तथा भविष्य को, इस लोक के और परलोक के जीवन को, अनन्तकाल के लिए स्वर्गीय एवं आशीषित बना देगी।

Characteristics of a Christian Believer - Separation

We have been seeing that on the day Pentecost, Peter had preached the gospel to the devout Jews gathered in Jerusalem from all over the world to fulfill the religious feasts and requirements. On hearing the gospel preaching from Peter, these devout Jews were cut to the heart, they realized that their ‘righteousness’ based on following religion, doing religious works, fulfilling rituals was vain, and their doing all this had not made them acceptable to God for salvation and reconciliation with Him. They then asked Peter and the other disciples what to do to rectify the situation, and were told about the way of salvation, of being Born-Again through faith in the Lord Jesus and becoming His followers, which had seven practical things in it. Of these seven we have already seen five, and have also seen that these five have been turned by the followers of the Christian religion into rituals and formalities; and they think that by fulfilling these formalities or rituals they become acceptable to God, and are reconciled with Him. The first step that Peter told them to take, as given in Acts 2:38 was to repent of their sins, turn away from the sinful behavior and the worldly desires of the old life, and become the disciples of the Lord Jesus; and we have seen about this in the previous two articles.

The second step for them to take was to publicly witness their change of heart and mind and having become a follower of Lord Jesus Christ, through baptism. The actual form and meaning of this witnessing too has been altered by the followers of the Christian religion, and they have made this into a ritual as well. Now, the followers of the Christian religion, religious works, and rituals, contrary to the teachings of the Bible, teach that their ‘baptism’ ensures that the people have become saved and God will accept them in heaven - a totally false notion.

Then, in verse 40, Peter states the third step, “And with many other words he testified and exhorted them, saying, "Be saved from this perverse generation."” (Acts 2:40). In the original Greek language, the words that have been translated as “perverse generation” also mean a “corrupt generation.” The message conveyed then, as well as today is that the person who decides to become a sincere and obedient follower of the Lord Jesus Christ, he should simultaneously also decide to separate himself from the corrupt behavior and practices of the world, things contrary to the life and teachings of the Lord Jesus; i.e., live a life of separation from the world and its ways. He should follow 2 Corinthians 5:15 “and He died for all, that those who live should live no longer for themselves, but for Him who died for them and rose again,” live a life of obedience to the Word of the Lord, and keep himself unpolluted by the world.

In the earlier discussion about sin and salvation we have seen that the moment a person receives the forgiveness of sins and salvation, his body becomes the temple of the Holy Spirit from that very instant. God the Holy Spirit comes to reside in the saved person from that very moment onwards, “In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise” (Ephesians 1:13), to help and to teach that person, and to guide in his spiritual growth and living (John 14:26). It is the responsibility of the Christian Believer to keep his body, the temple of the Holy Spirit, clean and holy “Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? If anyone defiles the temple of God, God will destroy him. For the temple of God is holy, which temple you are” (1 Corinthians 3:16-17). The Holy Spirit helps the person to fulfill this responsibility, so that the person turns from the worldly and physical desires, and lives a life of holiness glorifying God, “I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish” (Galatians 5:16-17); “And those who are Christ's have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit” (Galatians 5:24-25).

The apostle Paul, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, wrote to the Christian Believers in Rome, “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God” (Romans 12:1-2). There are three main things to pay heed to, in these verses: (i) The spiritual service of every Christian Believer is to offer themselves as a sacrifice to God. We know from the Old Testament that the sacrifice once offered to God could never again be used for any worldly purposes. (ii) The Christian Believer has to ensure that he does not conform to the world; i.e., he must stay away from all things and behavior that is according to worldliness and of the people of the world. The change of heart and mind after salvation should be evident in day-to-day behavior and living. (iii) Those who surrender, or offer themselves to God, and demonstrate their surrender and change of heart through a changed life and behavior, they will then become people who will get to know God’s will through their experiences; i.e., God will reveal His will to them.

So, does this being separate then means that the Christian Believer has to have no contact, no interaction with the world? We will look into the answer to this question in the next article. But for now, if you are still living as a person of the world, indulging in habits and behavior of worldliness, then beware; for those who live with the world will also perish as the people of the world, since becoming a friend of the world is becoming an enemy of God, “Adulterers and adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God” (James 4:4). Today and now, you have the opportunity to rectify your eternal destiny and situation. If you are still thinking of yourself as being a Christian, because of being born in a particular family and having fulfilled the religious rites and rituals prescribed under your religion or denomination since your childhood, then you too need to come out of your misunderstanding of Biblical facts and start understanding and living according to what the Word of God says, instead of what any denominational creed says or teaches.

If you are still not Born Again, have not obtained salvation, or have not asked the Lord Jesus for forgiveness for your sins, then you have the opportunity to do so right now. A short prayer said voluntarily with a sincere heart, with heartfelt repentance for your sins, and a fully submissive attitude, “Lord Jesus, I confess that I have disobeyed You, and have knowingly or unknowingly, in mind, in thought, in attitude, and in deeds, committed sins. I believe that you have fully borne the punishment of my sins by your sacrifice on the cross, and have paid the full price of those sins for all eternity. Please forgive my sins, change my heart and mind towards you, and make me your disciple, take me with you." God longs for your company and wants to see you blessed, but to make this possible, is your personal decision. Will you not say this prayer now, while you have the time and opportunity to do so - the decision is yours.

पिछले लेख में हमने देखा था कि पतरस द्वारा पिन्तेकुस्त के दिन किए गए सुसमाचार प्रचार से संसार भर से धार्मिक पर्व मनाने और व्यवस्था की विधि को पूरा करने के लिए आए हुए “भक्त यहूदियों के हृदय छिद गए, और उन्हें इस बात का बोध हुआ कि उनकी यह धर्म-कर्म-रस्म की धार्मिकता उन्हें उद्धार या नया जन्म देने और परमेश्वर को स्वीकार्य बनाने के लिए पर्याप्त नहीं है। तब उन्होंने पतरस और अन्य प्रेरितों से इसके समाधान के विषय प्रश्न पूछा, और पतरस ने उद्धार या नया जन्म प्राप्त करने के लिए उन्हें जो प्रभु यीशु की शिष्यता का मार्ग बताया। उस मार्ग का पहला कदम था अपने-अपने पापों से पश्चाताप करना और प्रभु का शिष्य हो जाने पर अपने पुराने जीवन की पापमय प्रवृत्तियों और व्यवहार से मन फिरा लेना। मन फिराव की इस बात के महत्व को हम और अधिक स्पष्टता से परमेश्वर के वचन में से इससे संबंधित पदों के उदाहरणों से समझ सकते हैं, जो मुख्यतः बाइबल के नए नियम में खण्ड में दिए गए हैं। बाइबल में दिए गए निम्न-लिखित कुछ उदाहरणों से हम देखते हैं कि उद्धार पाने और प्रभु यीशु का शिष्य या अनुयायी होने के लिए पापों से पश्चाताप और मन फिराव करने का विषय आधारभूत तथा अनिवार्य है। 

मन-फिराव या पश्चाताप ही:

* यूहन्ना बपतिस्मा देने वाले के प्रचार का आरंभ था “उन दिनों में यूहन्ना बपतिस्मा देनेवाला आकर यहूदिया के जंगल में यह प्रचार करने लगा कि मन फिराओ; क्योंकि स्वर्ग का राज्य निकट आ गया है” (मत्ती 3:1-2)। 

* प्रभु यीशु मसीह द्वारा पृथ्वी पर अपनी सेवकाई के आरंभ का प्रचार था “यूहन्ना के पकड़वाए जाने के बाद यीशु ने गलील में आकर परमेश्वर के राज्य का सुसमाचार प्रचार किया। और कहा, समय पूरा हुआ है, और परमेश्वर का राज्य निकट आ गया है; मन फिराओ और सुसमाचार पर विश्वास करो” (मरकुस 1:14-15)। 

* प्रभु यीशु मसीह द्वारा अपने शिष्यों को पहले प्रचार पर भेजे जाने के समय उनके प्रचार का विषय था “और उन्होंने जा कर प्रचार किया, कि मन फिराओ” (मरकुस 6:12)। 

* प्रभु यीशु द्वारा स्वर्गारोहण से ठीक पहले शिष्यों को संसार भर में प्रचार करने के लिए दिया गया विषय “और यरूशलेम से ले कर सब जातियों में मन फिराव का और पापों की क्षमा का प्रचार, उसी के नाम से किया जाएगा” (लूका 24:47)। 

* पवित्र आत्मा प्राप्त करने के बाद शिष्यों द्वारा संसार भर से यरूशलेम आए भक्त यहूदियों के समक्ष किए गए पहले सुसमाचार प्रचार का विषय “पतरस ने उन से कहा, मन फिराओ, और तुम में से हर एक अपने अपने पापों की क्षमा के लिये यीशु मसीह के नाम से बपतिस्मा ले; तो तुम पवित्र आत्मा का दान पाओगे” (प्रेरितों 2:38)।

* पतरस द्वारा यरूशलेम के इस्राएलियों के सामने किए गए प्रचार का विषय “इसलिये, मन फिराओ और लौट आओ कि तुम्हारे पाप मिटाए जाएं, जिस से प्रभु के सम्मुख से विश्रान्ति के दिन आएं” (प्रेरितों 3:19)। 

* परमेश्वर द्वारा सारे संसार के सभी लोगों के लिए दी गई आज्ञा का विषय “इसलिये परमेश्वर अज्ञानता के समयों में आनाकानी कर के, अब हर जगह सब मनुष्यों को मन फिराने की आज्ञा देता है” (प्रेरितों 17:30)। 

* पौलुस द्वारा यहूदियों और अन्य जातियों में किए जाने वाले प्रचार एवं सेवकाई का विषय “वरन यहूदियों और यूनानियों के सामने गवाही देता रहा, कि परमेश्वर की ओर मन फिराना, और हमारे प्रभु यीशु मसीह पर विश्वास करना चाहिए” (प्रेरितों 20:21); “परन्तु पहिले दमिश्क के, फिर यरूशलेम के रहने वालों को, तब यहूदिया के सारे देश में और अन्यजातियों को समझाता रहा, कि मन फिराओ और परमेश्वर की ओर फिर कर मन फिराव के योग्य काम करो” (प्रेरितों 26:20)।

* प्रकाशितवाक्य पुस्तक के 2 और 3 अध्याय में संबोधित कलीसियाओं को दिए गए चेतावनी के संदेशों का विषय (प्रकाशितवाक्य 2:5, 16, 21, 22; 3:3, 19)। 

* प्रकाशितवाक्य पुस्तक में परमेश्वर के प्रकोप और दंड के आने और सहने का कारण - पश्चाताप न करना (प्रकाशितवाक्य 9:20, 21; 16:9, 11)।

* पुराने नियम के भविष्यद्वक्ताओं एवं परमेश्वर के सेवकों के प्रचार का विषय भी पश्चाताप या मन फिराव ही था, “और यद्यपि यहोवा तुम्हारे पास अपने सारे दासों अथवा भविष्यद्वक्ताओं को भी यह कहने के लिये बड़े यत्न से भेजता आया है कि अपनी अपनी बुरी चाल और अपने अपने बुरे कामों से फिरो: तब जो देश यहोवा ने प्राचीनकाल में तुम्हारे पित्रों को और तुम को भी सदा के लिये दिया है उस पर बसे रहने पाओगे; परन्तु तुम ने न तो सुना और न कान लगाया है” (यिर्मयाह 25:4-5)। 

प्रभु यीशु मसीह का अनुयायी होने का अर्थ है पुरानी बातों, विचारधाराओं, धारणाओं, व्यवहार आदि को छोड़कर, प्रभु यीशु मसीह की शिष्यता में एक पूर्णतः बदला हुआ नया जीवन जीना “सो यदि कोई मसीह में है तो वह नई सृष्‍टि है: पुरानी बातें बीत गई हैं; देखो, वे सब नई हो गईं” (2 कुरिन्थियों 5:17); ऐसा जीवन जो किसी धर्म-कर्म-रस्म पर आधारित नहीं है, वरन परमेश्वर के वचन की आज्ञाकारिता पर आधारित है, जैसा कि प्रभु यीशु ने अपने शिष्यों से, उन्हें उलाहना देते हुए, स्वयं कहा “जब तुम मेरा कहना नहीं मानते, तो क्यों मुझे हे प्रभु, हे प्रभु, कहते हो?” (लूका 6:46)। प्रभु की शिष्यता और आज्ञाकारिता के इस जीवन में उठाया गया पहल कदम स्वेच्छा एवं सच्चे मन से पश्चाताप करना है, पुराने सांसारिक जीवन से नए आत्मिक जीवन की ओर मुड़ जाना है। बिना सच्चे पश्चाताप के प्रभु का शिष्य न तो बना जा सकता है, और न उस शिष्यता को निभाया जा सकता है। मसीही विश्वासी या प्रभु यीशु के अनुयायी होने के लिए किसी धर्म परिवर्तन की नहीं, वरन पापमय प्रवृत्तियों से मन परिवर्तन की, और परिवर्तित जीवन का निर्वाह करने की आवश्यकता है। इसलिए यदि आपने अभी तक अपने आप को प्रभु यीशु मसीह की शिष्यता में समर्पित नहीं किया है, और आप अभी भी अपने एक परिवार विशेष में जन्म अथवा उस परिवार और अपने जन्म से संबंधित धर्म तथा उसकी रीतियों के पालन के आधार पर अपने आप को प्रभु का जन समझ रहे हैं, तो आपको भी अपनी इस गलतफहमी से बाहर निकलकर परमेश्वर के वचन बाइबल की सच्चाई (प्रेरितों 17:30) को स्वीकार करने और उसका पालन करने की आवश्यकता है। 

आज और अभी आपके पास अपनी अनन्तकाल की स्थिति को सुधारने का अवसर है; प्रभु यीशु से अपने पापों के लिए क्षमा माँगकर, स्वेच्छा से तथा सच्चे मन से अपने आप को उसकी अधीनता में समर्पित कर दीजिए - उद्धार और स्वर्गीय जीवन का यही एकमात्र मार्ग है। आपको स्वेच्छा और सच्चे मन से प्रभु यीशु मसीह से केवल एक छोटी प्रार्थना करनी है, और साथ ही अपना जीवन उसे पूर्णतः समर्पित करना है। आप यह प्रार्थना और समर्पण कुछ इस प्रकार से भी कर सकते हैं, “प्रभु यीशु मैं आपका धन्यवाद करता हूँ कि आपने मेरे पापों की क्षमा और समाधान के लिए उन पापों को अपने ऊपर लिया, उनके कारण मेरे स्थान पर क्रूस की मृत्यु सही, गाड़े गए, और मेरे उद्धार के लिए आप तीसरे दिन जी भी उठे, और आज जीवित प्रभु परमेश्वर हैं। कृपया मेरे पापों को क्षमा करें, मुझे अपनी शरण में लें, और मुझे अपना शिष्य बना लें। मैं अपना जीवन आप के हाथों में समर्पित करता हूँ।” सच्चे और समर्पित मन से की गई आपकी एक प्रार्थना आपके वर्तमान तथा भविष्य को, इस लोक के और परलोक के जीवन को, अनन्तकाल के लिए स्वर्गीय एवं आशीषित बना देगी।

The Importance of Repentance in Christian Life

In the previous article we have seen that through Peter’s preaching of the gospel on the day of Pentecost, the hearts of the devout Jews who had come from places all over the world to celebrate the feasts and fulfill the requirements of the Law, were pricked and they realized that their righteousness through observance of religion-works-rituals is unable to give them salvation and make them acceptable to God.  Not knowing what else to do to be made acceptable to God, they asked Peter and the disciples for the solution. Then they were told about the way to be saved i.e., to be Born-Again and become a disciple of the Lord Jesus; and the first step on that way was to individually repent for their sins, and then turn way or leave behind the sinful ways and behavior of their previous life. The necessity and importance of this turning away of their hearts, this repentance can be seen and understood from the related Bible verses, mainly found in the New Testament:

* Repentance was the theme of John the Baptist’s preaching, “In those days John the Baptist came preaching in the wilderness of Judea, and saying, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!” (Matthew 3:1-2).

* Repentance was the theme of the Lord Jesus’s preaching since the onset of His earthly ministry, “Now after John was put in prison, Jesus came to Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, and saying, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel."” (Mark 1:14-15).

* Repentance was the theme of the first preaching ministry of the disciples of the Lord Jesus, “So they went out and preached that people should repent” (Mark 6:12).

* Repentance was the theme given by the Lord Jesus to His disciples, at the time of His ascension to heaven, to be preached all over the world, “and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem” (Luke 24:47).

* Repentance was the call by the disciples of the Lord to the devout Jews assembled from all over the world to celebrate the feasts and fulfill the requirements of the Law, “Then Peter said to them, "Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit” (Acts 2:38).

* Repentance was preached by Peter to the Jews of Jerusalem, “Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord” (Acts 3:19).

* Repentance is the call of God to all the people all over the world, “Truly, these times of ignorance God overlooked, but now commands all men everywhere to repent” (Acts 17:30).

* Repentance was the theme of Paul’s ministry and preaching amongst the Jews and the Gentiles, “testifying to Jews, and also to Greeks, repentance toward God and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ” (Acts 20:21); “but declared first to those in Damascus and in Jerusalem, and throughout all the region of Judea, and then to the Gentiles, that they should repent, turn to God, and do works befitting repentance” (Acts 26:20).

* Repentance is the call to the Churches addressed in Revelation chapters 2 and 3 - (Revelation 2:5, 16, 21, 22; 3:3, 19).

* Not repenting is the cause of having to suffer God’s wrath and judgment in the book of Revelation - (Revelation 9:20, 21; 16:9, 11).

* The theme of the preaching of the prophets of the Old Testament was repentance and turning away from sin, “And the Lord has sent to you all His servants the prophets, rising early and sending them, but you have not listened nor inclined your ear to hear. They said, 'Repent now everyone of his evil way and his evil doings, and dwell in the land that the Lord has given to you and your fathers forever and ever” (Jeremiah 25:4-5).

To be a follower, a disciple of the Lord Jesus means to turn away from the previous worldly things, point-of-view, notions, behavior etc., turn a new leaf, and live this transformed life “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new” (2 Corinthians 5:17). It is to live a life that is not based upon being righteous through fulfilling the rites and rituals of any religion, or based on doing good works, or on living according to man-made rules and ceremonies; and thereby assume to have become acceptable to God. Rather, it is living a life based upon obedience to God’s Word; as the Lord said to His disciples, chiding them for their disobedience “But why do you call Me 'Lord, Lord,' and do not do the things which I say?” (Luke 6:46). The first step to be taken to become an obedient disciple of the Lord Jesus is to sincerely and voluntarily repent of sins and turn away from the old worldly ways of living, to the new ways of living a spiritual life. Without an honest repentance neither can anyone become the Lord’s disciple, nor truly live the life of discipleship. To be a Christian Believer or the follower of the Lord Jesus, no one needs to convert their religion, but to convert their hearts and minds from the sinful tendencies and habits to living the new life that the Lord Jesus provides to His people.

If you are still thinking of yourself as being a Christian, because of being born in a particular family and having fulfilled the religious rites and rituals prescribed under your religion or denomination since your childhood, then you too need to come out of your misunderstanding of Biblical facts and start understanding and living according to what the Word of God says, instead of what any denominational creed says or teaches.

If you are still not Born Again, have not obtained salvation, or have not asked the Lord Jesus for forgiveness for your sins, then you have the opportunity to do so right now. A short prayer said voluntarily with a sincere heart, with heartfelt repentance for your sins, and a fully submissive attitude, “Lord Jesus, I confess that I have disobeyed You, and have knowingly or unknowingly, in mind, in thought, in attitude, and in deeds, committed sins. I believe that you have fully borne the punishment of my sins by your sacrifice on the cross, and have paid the full price of those sins for all eternity. Please forgive my sins, change my heart and mind towards you, and make me your disciple, take me with you." God longs for your company and wants to see you blessed, but to make this possible, is your personal decision. Will you not say this prayer now, while you have the time and opportunity to do so - the decision is yours.

पिछले लेखों में हमने परमेश्वर के वचन बाइबल की प्रेरितों के काम पुस्तक, जो प्रथम चर्च या मण्डली के आरंभ तथा गतिविधियों का संक्षिप्त इतिहास है, में से उस मण्डली के लोगों, अर्थात मसीही  विश्वासियों से संबंधित सात बातों को देखा, जिनमें से चार में वे “लौलीन” रहते थे, और पाँचवीं, बपतिस्मा लेना, प्रत्येक मसीही विश्वासी की ज़िम्मेदारी थी। साथ ही हमने यह भी देखा कि जो मसीही विश्वासियों के लिए “लौलीन” रहने वाली बातें है, उन्हें तथा बपतिस्मा लेने को मसीही या ईसाई धर्म का पालन करने वालों ने एक रीति या रस्म बना लिया है, और उन्हें उस गणित के समीकरण के समान देखते, सिखाते, और निभाते हैं, कि मसीही विश्वासी इन बातों का पालन करते हैं इसलिए इन बातों का पालन करने वाले भी स्वतः ही मसीही विश्वासी होंगे। इन धर्म-कर्म-रस्म का पालन करने में भरोसा रखने वालों ने उन बातों के निर्वाह के संबंध में अपने ही नियम और विधियाँ, जिनका बाइबल में कोई उल्लेख नहीं है, स्थापित कर के, इन बातों के निर्वाह करने को धर्म के निर्वाह के लिए एक अपेक्षित तथा वांछनीय औपचारिकता बना दिया है। किन्तु जैसे प्रभु यीशु मसीह ने अपने समय के धर्म के अगुवों से, उनके द्वारा मनुष्यों की बनाई हुई विधियों को परमेश्वर की बातें कहकर सिखाने को व्यर्थ उपासना करना कहा था, और चिताया था कि सब व्यर्थ बातें हटा दी जाएँगी (मत्ती 15:9, 13-14), वैसे ही आज भी प्रभु की यही बात वर्तमान में भी मनुष्यों के गढ़े हुए विधि-विधानों पर उतनी ही लागू है, उनके विषय उतनी ही सत्य है जितनी तब थी।

हमने यह भी देखा था कि सच्चे मसीही विश्वासियों के इन सात गुणों के बारे में लोगों को बताए जाने का आरंभ, यरूशलेम में धार्मिक पर्व मनाने के लिए एकत्रित हुए “भक्त यहूदियों” के मध्य में पतरस तथा प्रभु यीशु के शिष्यों द्वारा किए गए सुसमाचार प्रचार को सुनने के बाद, उन भक्त यहूदियों द्वारा उठाए गए एक प्रश्न से हुआ था, “तब सुनने वालों के हृदय छिद गए, और वे पतरस और शेष प्रेरितों से पूछने लगे, कि हे भाइयो, हम क्या करें?” (प्रेरितों 2:37)। उनके इस प्रश्न के उत्तर में पतरस द्वारा दिए गए उत्तर में हम इन सात बातों को देखते हैं। हम सात में से उन पाँच बातों को देख चुके हैं, जिन्हें मसीही विश्वास के स्थान पर मसीही या ईसाई धर्म का पालन करने वाले औपचारिकता के रूप में निभाते रहते हैं, और समझते हैं कि ऐसा करने से वे भी मसीही विश्वासियों के समान उद्धार या नया जन्म पाए हुए हो गए हैं; जो परमेश्वर के वचन बाइबल के अनुसार एक बिल्कुल गलत धारणा है। आज हम शेष दो बातों, पश्चाताप करना और सांसारिकता से पृथक होने में से पहली बात, पश्चाताप करना, के बारे में कुछ विस्तार से देखेंगे।

मूल यूनानी भाषा के जिस शब्द का अंग्रेजी अनुवाद ‘Repent’ और हिन्दी अनुवाद ‘मन फिराओ’ किया गया है, उसका शब्दार्थ है “बिलकुल भिन्न सोच या विचारधारा रखना”। अर्थात किसी बात के लिए पश्चाताप करने का अर्थ है, उस बात के लिए अपनी सोच या विचारधारा को पूर्णतः बदल देना, और उसे परमेश्वर की सोच और विचारधारा के अनुरूप ले आना, जिससे वह परमेश्वर की सोच और विचारधारा से संगत हो जाए, परमेश्वर को स्वीकार्य हो जाए। पश्चाताप करना कोई औपचारिकता पूरी करना अथवा किसी धार्मिक रीति का निर्वाह करना नहीं है; यह पूरे मन से उस बात के प्रति अपनी समझ और व्यवहार को पूर्णतः परिवर्तित कर लेना है, अपनी भूतपूर्व सोच और विचारधारा से बिलकुल बदल कर, एक नई सोच और विचारधारा को स्वीकार करना और पालन करना है। संसार भर से आए हुए ये भक्त यहूदी यरूशलेम में इसलिए एकत्रित थे कि वे अपने धर्म और धार्मिक अनुष्ठानों के निर्वाह के द्वारा परमेश्वर की दृष्टि में धर्मी ठहरें और परमेश्वर को स्वीकार्य भी हो जाएं। किन्तु पवित्र शास्त्र में दी गई जिस व्यवस्था और बातों के आधार पर वे ऐसी धारणा रखे हुए थे, जब उसी पवित्र शास्त्र में से पतरस ने परमेश्वर पवित्र आत्मा की अगुवाई और सामर्थ्य से उनके मध्य में परमेश्वर को स्वीकार्य होने की वास्तविकता को रखा, तो उनकी आँखें खुल गईं। पतरस की बात सुनकर उनके हृदय छिद गए, उन्हें बोध हुआ कि उनकी यह धर्म-कर्म-रस्म की धार्मिकता उनके किसी काम की नहीं है, उसे निभाने के बाद भी वे परमेश्वर को वैसे ही अस्वीकार्य हैं, जैसे पहले थे। और तब, जब उन्हें परमेश्वर की दृष्टि में धर्मी एवं स्वीकार्य होने के लिए और कुछ नहीं सूझ पड़ा, तो उन्होंने पतरस तथा शेष प्रेरितों से ही पूछा “हे भाइयों हम क्या करें?”

पतरस के उत्तर की सर्वप्रथम बात थी, ‘मन फिराओ’; अर्थात धार्मिकता के प्रति अपनी वर्तमान विचारधारा और व्यवहार से निकल कर, अपने-अपने पापों की क्षमा, उद्धार, तथा परमेश्वर को स्वीकार्य धार्मिकता की समझ एवं निर्वाह के लिए प्रभु यीशु मसीह द्वारा किए गए कार्य को स्वीकार करो; अपने जीवन में उसका पालन करो। पतरस द्वारा दिए गए इस उत्तर में निहित है कि मसीही विश्वास और परमेश्वर को स्वीकार्य धार्मिकता के जीवन का आरंभ प्रत्येक व्यक्ति द्वारा व्यक्तिगत रीति से अपने जीवन में विद्यमान पापों का अंगीकार करने, फिर उनके लिए प्रभु यीशु मसीह से क्षमा माँगने के द्वारा होता है। यह करने के पश्चात, जिन बातों से उसके जीवन में पाप को प्रवेश और पैठ मिलती है उनसे संबंधित अपने विचारों और व्यवहारों के मार्ग को दृढ़ निश्चय के साथ पूर्णतः छोड़ देना है। साथ ही, प्रभु यीशु मसीह की शिष्यता में उनके द्वारा दिखाए गए मार्ग पर चल निकलने तथा हर परिस्थिति का सामना करते हुए चलते ही रहने के लिए कटिबद्ध हो जाना है।

आज के मसीही या ईसाई समाज में ऐसी कितनी ही बातों, रीति-रिवाजों, त्यौहारों, आदि को मानने और मनाने पर जोर दिया जाता है, जिनका उल्लेख भी बाइबल में नहीं है, और जिनके लिए प्रभु यीशु अथवा पवित्र आत्मा ने कभी कोई शिक्षा नहीं दी है। फिर भी उन्हें बहुत उत्साह और लग्न से माना और मनाया जाता है; यहाँ तक कि यदि कोई उन बातों को न माने या मनाए, अथवा उनके मानने और मनाने के बारे में कोई प्रश्न उठाए, तो उसे विधर्मी समझा जाता है, उसके मसीही होने पर संदेह किया जाता है। किन्तु पश्चाताप और मन फिराव जैसे महत्वपूर्ण विषय को, जो बाइबल के अनुसार मसीही विश्वास में प्रवेश का, उद्धार एवं पापों की क्षमा प्राप्त करने के लिए व्यक्ति द्वारा उठाया जाने वाला पहला कदम है, उसके बारे में न बताया या सिखाया जाता है, और न ही इसके महत्व के बारे में शिक्षा दी जाती है। अगले लेख में हम इस बात के परम-महत्व को समझने के लिए परमेश्वर के वचन बाइबल में से पश्चाताप या मन फिराव से संबंधित कुछ पदों को देखेंगे।

The Characteristics of a Christian Believer - Repentance

In the previous articles we had seen seven characteristics of a Christian Believer from the Book of Acts, the historical account of the activities of the first Church of the Bible. Of these seven, we saw from Acts 2:42 that four were things in which the saved, or Born-Again initial Christian Believers, continued steadfastly, and a fifth, taking “Baptism” was the Lord’s commandment for every Born-Again Believer. We also saw that the things in which the Christian Believers continued steadfastly, have been turned into a formality, a ritual by the followers and adherents of the Christian religion, and have been taken, taught, and used like a mathematical equation, i.e., since Christian Believers do these things, therefore those who do these things will be considered as Christian Believers. The followers of this concept of having righteousness through religion-works-rituals, have created and added their own rules and ceremonies to these things, which have no support or affirmation from God’s Word. They have turned these five essential characteristics of a Christian Believer into religious formalities, expected and desirable in “Christians'' instead of retaining them in their initial form of commandments of the Lord to be observed steadfastly, as was being done by the early Christian Believers. But just as the Lord Jesus, during His time of Ministry on earth, had said to the then religious leaders about their teaching and enforcing such man-made rules, regulations and rituals being a “vain worship”, which would be removed by God (Matthew 15:9, 13-14) similarly, what the Lord had said at that time, is equally true and applicable to the current man-made rules, regulations, and traditions rampant today in Christendom.

We had also seen that the teaching about these seven characteristics of a Christian Believer began in Jerusalem, in the first preaching to the “devout Jews” by Peter and the disciples of Christ, in response to a question raised by those devout Jews who heard Peter’s sermon “Now when they heard [this], they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men [and] brethren, what shall we do?” (Acts 2:37). Peter responded to this question by asking them to do seven things, of which five we have already seen; and the followers of the Christian religion fulfill them as a formality, as a ritual and think that by doing this they too like the saved, Born-Again Christian Believers have become saved and acceptable to God, which is an unBiblical and a patently false notion on their part. We will now start considering the remaining two characteristics, i.e., Repentance and Separation from the world, in some detail from today.

The word used in the original Greek language, and translated as ‘Repent’ literally means “to come into a totally different point-of-view or understanding” about something. That is to say that to repent from sins literally means to completely turn away from one’s own thinking and understanding and to bring it around to God’s way and behavior towards sin.. This replacement of one’s own views, attitudes, behaviors etc. about things with God’s views, attitudes and behavior about them has to be done so as to be acceptable to God, and then one has to continually live according to this new thinking and understanding. This makes it evident that ‘repentance from sins’ is not fulfilling a formality or a ritual; rather, it is voluntarily taking a decision with a fully committed and submitted heart for Lord Jesus, to turn away from own or man-made and taught ways and commandments, to learn and live according to the Lord’s ways and commandments. Take note, the first people to hear this from Peter and the disciples, on that day were devout Jews who had come from all over the world to fulfill the requirements and ceremonies of their religion, to become righteous and acceptable to God. They had learnt and followed their concepts of righteousness and being acceptable to God from the teachings given in the Law and other parts of their Holy Scriptures. But when Peter, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, placed before them the truth about being righteous and acceptable to God, it was a stark revelation for them. On hearing what Peter had to say, they were pricked to their hearts, they realized and understood that their righteousness based upon religion-works-rituals is vain, they are still as unacceptable to God after fulfilling all of those things, as they were before fulfilling them. Therefore, when they could not figure out any other way to be righteous and acceptable before God, they asked Peter and the other disciples “... Men [and] brethren, what shall we do?” 

In answer to their question, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, the first thing that Peter asked them to do was to ‘repent’; i.e., completely and radically change their present attitude and thinking about being righteous, and believe in and accept the work done on the Cross of Calvary by the Lord Jesus for the forgiveness of sins, salvation, and becoming acceptable to God, and then to continue on this way lifelong. Implied in this answer given by Peter is the fact that Christian faith and righteousness acceptable to God in a person’s life begin only when he acknowledges the presence of sins in his life, asks for the Lord Jesus to forgive him for them and unconditionally surrenders his life to the Lord. After this, then the person has to turn away from all the things that provided an entry of sin into his heart and make him provide a place for sin to reside within him; he has to resolutely and diligently move away from all behavior, company, and things that can lead him back into a life of sin. Instead, as a disciple of the Lord Jesus he now has to walk on the way shown by the Lord, live according to His guidance; even though he will have to face difficult circumstances and many problems from the world in doing so, but he has to strive nevertheless.

In the present Christendom emphasis is laid upon accepting and fulfilling or observing many things that are not even given in the Bible, things about which neither the Lord Jesus nor the Holy Spirit ever gave any teaching or instructions. But still people fulfill and observe them with great enthusiasm and fervor; so much so that if anyone raises any questions about their observance, or if someone does not fulfill or observe them then he is considered a blasphemer, his being a Christian is questioned and doubted. But these Biblical, God instructed, very important things like repentance, change of heart, forgiveness of sins, obedience to God’s Word and not to man-made rules, regulations, and rituals etc., which form the very basis of being saved and made acceptable to God are, the very first step for actually being a Christian Believer, are usually never taught or even mentioned to the people, or are not explained and emphasized to them.

In the next article, to understand the paramount importance and absolute necessity of repentance and asking for forgiveness of sins, we will look at some verses about this from the Bible. If you are still thinking of yourself as being a Christian, because of being born in a particular family and having fulfilled the religious rites and rituals prescribed under your religion or denomination since your childhood, then you too need to come out of your misunderstanding of Biblical facts and start understanding and living according to what the Word of God says, instead of what any denominational creed says or teaches.

If you are still not Born Again, have not obtained salvation, or have not asked the Lord Jesus for forgiveness for your sins, then you have the opportunity to do so right now. A short prayer said voluntarily with a sincere heart, with heartfelt repentance for your sins, and a fully submissive attitude, “Lord Jesus, I confess that I have disobeyed You, and have knowingly or unknowingly, in mind, in thought, in attitude, and in deeds, committed sins. I believe that you have fully borne the punishment of my sins by your sacrifice on the cross, and have paid the full price of those sins for all eternity. Please forgive my sins, change my heart and mind towards you, and make me your disciple, take me with you." God longs for your company and wants to see you blessed, but to make this possible, is your personal decision. Will you not say this prayer now, while you have the time and opportunity to do so - the decision is yours.
