Users of the Gifts of the Holy Spirit - Prophets & Prophecy

In the previous article we had started to examine the second gift and ministry given in 1 Corinthians 12:28 - Prophets and Prophecy. This gift is also related to the Word Ministry in the Church. We had seen that Biblically speaking, to be a Prophet and to prophesy does not necessarily mean to foretell about future things, but it also means to stand before the people to honestly speak a message or teaching from God, at any cost. We had also seen that unlike the modern day “Prophets”, the Prophets of God were people who not only were completely surrendered to God, but also spoke His Word or message forthrightly and candidly; they exposed the sin and evil of the people, and their being contrary to God in their lives and behavior. Because of these things, God’s prophets and their “prophecy” or messages were usually not popular amongst people, were usually not appreciated or liked by the people. The Prophets mentioned in the Bible, usually suffered persecution, rejection, and sorrows at the hands of the people they ministered amongst, but still fulfilled their ministry from God. God’s Prophets, in the Bible, were neither popular, nor used their ministry as a title or status to gain name, fame and worldly prosperity. In contrast, today many people call themselves “Prophets” and claim to “Prophesy” by the power of the Holy Spirit, but their work and ministry is usually related to using these as a title or status symbol, to gain name, fame and worldly prosperity. They usually stay clear of exposing the sins and actual spiritual condition of the people, and speaking the clear Word of God with honesty and commitment. Their own lives, preaching, and teachings are full of popular things related to physical healings, temporal benefits, and gaining material things, instead of teaching about sin, repentance, forgiveness, salvation, judgment, eternal life, etc., all of which is quite unlike what the teachings of the Word of God speak about (2 Timothy 3:16-17; 4:1-5), and their lives and ministry in no way conforms to the life and ministry of the prophets appointed by the Holy Spirit in the first Church and the initial Christian congregations.

Today we will also see how the term “to prophesy” has been used in God’s Word, in the Old as well as the New Testaments, with different meanings, but all have been called “to prophesy.” Through this we will understand that in the Bible “to prophesy” does not only mean foretelling the future as these teachers of false doctrines and wrong teachings catering to popular public sentiments usually emphasize, and most of their “prophecies” do not actually come true. We had seen yesterday that the meaning of the words “prophet” and “prophesying” in the original Greek language of the New Testament is “to speak before” - in context of time or in context of before people; and the message conveyed in that context; similarly, in the Old Testament as well, the original Hebrew words too mean the same thing, have the same implications. It is clear from these word-meanings that in the original languages, for their initial audiences, the terms “prophet” and “prophesying” not only meant those who tell about the future and the messages related to the future happenings, but also the people who came and spoke God’s message before the people, even if it was about the people’s current unspiritual state and ungodly behavior, they too were “prophets” and “prophesied” on behalf of God.

Consider some examples of the use of the term “To prophesy” from the Bible:

  • To call upon the name of a deity - 1 Kings 18:29 - the “prophets” of Baal “prophesied” calling the name of their deity, but nothing happened.

  • To speak to the people about a message or a topic given by God, to put it before them 1 Corinthians 14:3.

  • To forewarn about a future event on behalf of God - Ezekiel 36:1, 3, 6; 37:12-14.

  • To give a commandment to the people on behalf of God - Ezekiel 37:4, 9-10.

  • To speak under the influence of the power of God - Amos 3:8.

  • To praise and worship God using musical instruments and by singing songs - 1 Chronicles 25:1-6.

  • To reveal or tell something hidden or concealed - Luke 22:64.

Besides this, in the New Testament, the teachings Paul gave to Timothy under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, in the two letters written to Timothy, they too tell us about the characteristics of a person speaking on behalf of God, and the qualities in God’s messages that he speaks. 2 Timothy chapter 2 tells about the characteristics that should be present in a prophet or spokesman of God. About the qualities of the message of such a person, it is written in 2 Timothy 3:16 that “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.” The implication is that the person speaking God’s message, has to fulfill his ministry not through messages from his own thinking and understanding, but from the Scriptures. In fulfillment of his ministry, from the Scriptures he should speak to the people about “doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.” The spokesman of God has to “Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching” (2 Timothy 4:2). Compare the clear and straightforward teachings of the Bible, with the lives, works, and messages of these modern day so-called “prophets” and their “prophecies”, and it will immediately become apparent whether they and their ministry is from the Holy Spirit or not; because the Holy Spirit is the “Spirit of Truth” and “guides into all truth” (John 16:13); He never speaks any lies, nor does He ever mislead or wrongly guide anyone about anything.

If you are a Christian Believer, then it is a humble request that you understand the actual meaning and implications of any term or word used in the Bible, please see how it has been used at different places in God’s Word, and thereby stay safe from falling into wrong teachings and doctrines. Examine and see if these modern day so-called “prophets” and their “prophecies” are conforming to what the Bible says; do they measure up to the criteria of God’s Word. Beware of all false teachings being spread by Satan to beguile and mislead people, and warn others, teach them as well to be safe and secure.

If you are still thinking of yourself as being a Christian, a child of God, entitled to a place in heaven, because of being born in a particular family and having fulfilled the religious rites and rituals prescribed under your religion or denomination since your childhood, then you too need to come out of your misunderstanding of Biblical facts and start learning, understanding, and living according to what the Word of God says, instead of what any denominational creed says or teaches. Make the necessary corrections in your life now while you have the time and opportunity; lest by the time you realize your mistake, it is too late to do anything about it.

If you are still not Born Again, have not obtained salvation, or have not asked the Lord Jesus for forgiveness for your sins, then you have the opportunity to do so right now. A short prayer said voluntarily with a sincere heart, with heartfelt repentance for your sins, and a fully submissive attitude, “Lord Jesus, I confess that I have disobeyed You, and have knowingly or unknowingly, in mind, in thought, in attitude, and in deeds, committed sins. I believe that you have fully borne the punishment of my sins by your sacrifice on the cross, and have paid the full price of those sins for all eternity. Please forgive my sins, change my heart and mind towards you, and make me your disciple, take me with you." God longs for your company and wants to see you blessed, but to make this possible, is your personal decision. Will you not say this prayer now, while you have the time and opportunity to do so - the decision is yours.

16 / Gifts of The Holy Spirit in Christian Ministry – 16

Users of the Gifts of the Holy Spirit - Prophets

We have been learning about the gifts of the Holy Spirit in Christian life and Ministry. Although all the gifts given by the Holy Spirit and all the works and ministries assigned by God for His Believers are equal, none is lesser, or of lesser importance than any other, but according to the frequency of use in the Church - often or occasionally, some gifts have been placed in a serial order in 1 Corinthians 12:28. In this serial listing, the most often used and placed up in the list are related to the ministry of God’s Word; and the least often used are the gifts related to speaking in other ‘tongues’ or languages - about which we have already seen. The first gift related to the Word Ministry, is of being an Apostles, about which we have seen in the previous two articles. Today, from the Word of God the Bible, we will look about the next gift and ministry, being a Prophet.

Generally speaking, whenever the word prophet or to prophesy or prophecy comes before us, we think of a person who can foretell the future and the things that are going to happen in the future. But the words translated in English as prophets or prophesy, do not have only this meaning in their original languages, in the Bible. The word used in the original language of the New Testament, Greek, means “one who can foretell” i.e. speak ahead. This can be both, speak beforehand in terms of time, i.e. tell about the future; as well speak ahead of or in front of others, e.g. a speaker or an orator. So, if anyone were to stand before people and give a message or teaching from God, then that person would be a ‘prophet’ and his message would be a ‘prophecy.’

In this context, there is a very important Biblical fact to be taken note of and kept in mind - although God did raise up people who received visions and messages from Him to tell to His people, to tell them their coming blessings or punishments from God, to tell the world about the coming end of the world and judgment, and these God appointed people are called “Prophets” and their messages are called “prophecies” in the Bible; but neither in the Old, nor in the New Testament, all the people speaking on behalf of God have always been labeled and accepted as “Prophets” nor have whatever message they gave been taken as “prophecy.” Also, both in the Old as well as the New Testaments, God has spoken against those who try to predict the future, especially as ‘professionals’ of this field, other than when it has been at the behest of God. These professional predictors of the future have been condemned in the Bible as being against God and His Word, and have been shown as people working under the influence of demons (Deuteronomy 18:9-14; Acts 16:16-18). The implication is that not everyone who claims to speak in the name of God and predict the future, is necessarily been sent by God; even Satan can send his people with similar powers. And, this is also a fact that to obstruct the work of God and to beguile people away from God, Satan does do this. We also see from the Bible that whoever would claim to be a “Prophet” and prophesy, it was necessary that whatever he had said is also fulfilled; else, God’s commandment was to kill such false prophets and fortune tellers (Deuteronomy 18:20-22); so that people would be cautious about claiming to be “Prophets”, and not make false prophecies in the name of God to use this for gaining personal benefits. In the New Testament too we have been cautioned about discerning false prophets and beware of them (1 John 4:1-6).

There is a very important fact associated with being a Prophet from God and carrying God’s message to His people; if the Prophet would say anything on his own, or add to what God has said through his own understanding, God would reject all such additions; He is under no compulsion to comply with them. Only that which God has said to that Prophet would be acceptable to God; if he assumed something or said anything from his side in the name of God, God would caution that Prophet and ask him to correct himself. We see this well illustrated in the Prophet Nathan’s concurring in God’s name with King David to build the Temple of God, and then God correcting Nathan and sending him back to tell God’s will to David (2 Samuel 7:1-5). Also, if any God appointed Prophet would hesitate to deliver God’s message, not speak up on behalf of God, and tried to evade his God given responsibility, even then he would not escape his duty of speaking up God’s truth. God would create such a restlessness in them, that eventually they had to speak up for Him (Jeremiah 20:9); or create such circumstance around them, that they would have to do what God had told them to do, as was the case with the Prophet Jonah, assigned to preach in Nineveh, tried to evade it, but eventually had to go and do it.

According to the Word of God, the Bible, to be a messenger of God, i.e., a Prophet, and to speak God’s messages to the people on behalf of God, whether it was about the future or about the current happenings, was never ever something to be taken lightly, nor can it be taken lightly or frivolously even today by anyone. To be called a Prophet of God is not to take up a title or acquire a status, and then use it to gain name, fame, and worldly prosperity. Rather, then, as well as now, it has always been a very demanding position of great responsibility, and accountability to God. When we see the Prophets of God in the Bible, whether in the Old or in the New Testament, they all had a very difficult life, the people of their times did not give them any importance, hardly anyone paid any heed to what they had to say, and practically no one liked their messages. To be a Prophet of God and to ‘prophesy’ on God’s behalf would tantamount to being treated harshly, with contempt, and asking to be opposed by the society. Because God’s Prophets would speak the bitter and unpalatable truths of God to the officials, leaders, and the general public, about their lives and the sins in their lives. The Prophets of God were usually engaged in telling the people, officials, leaders etc. why and how God was against them, and what He was going to do about this unacceptable state; the Prophets often had to suffer persecution and rejection, even be in danger of losing their lives for the bitter and unpalatable truths of God that they were sent to speak on behalf of God.

But in stark contrast to this evident harsh life and working of God’s Prophets delivering God’s messages from the Bible, our current, modern-day “Prophets” are living and working in a very comfortable and luxurious manner. The “Prophets” of today “prophesy” about what people like to hear, they loudly and dramatically talk about and glibly promise a life of worldly prosperity, physical enjoyments, and temporal benefits, instead of speaking to people about their sin, repentance and forgiveness from sin, being submitted to the Lord Jesus and obedient to His Word, preparing for the coming judgment of God, etc. Today people are using this responsibility and Spiritual gift as a title and status symbol, not to speak up about the truths of God and His Word, but to show themselves as special and commendable, which is quite unlike what the Bible says and shows. In the next article we will see in how many different ways and with varying meanings the term “prophecy” has been used in the Bible, and understand the meaning of these words in greater depth from that.

If you are a Christian Believer, then you should strive to learn God’s Word and to see, learn, and understand what the Bible says about these things. Beware and stay away, stay safe from those who use the Spiritual ministry and gifts to speak populistic things of worldly and physical benefits, instead of God’s truth factually - however harsh it may be for the hearers. Make it a habit to first check and confirm, and only then believe and accept what people are saying, especially if it is of temporal value.

Users of the Gifts of the Holy Spirit - Apostles: Characteristics & Identification

In the previous articles we had started to see the about the users of the Spiritual gifts, in the list of 1 Corinthians 12:28 sequentially mentioned, based on their utility in the Church. We had seen that the primary importance is of those engaged in Ministry of the Word - the Apostles, Prophets, and Teachers. To avoid misunderstandings and misinterpretations about these gifts and responsibilities, we started considering them on the basis of what is written in God’s Word about them, and how the people of the first Church, the initial Christian Believers would have understood about them, since that is their incontrovertible, irreplaceable, unalterable primary meaning. We saw what God’s Word says and does not say about being an Apostle, and it became evident that in the New Testament the Apostles were never appointed by men, but always by God; and no instructions or any criteria were ever given on the basis of which any appointment was to be made of any Apostles in the Church by any persons at any time, then or later. We also saw from Mark 3:13-15 that when the first Apostles were appointed by the Lord Jesus, He had a special purpose in a sequential order for them to fulfill; therefore, today, if anyone considers himself an Apostle, these purposes, in that same order, should also be seen in that person’s life; current Apostles cannot be different than the original Apostles, for that would be a contradiction. Today we will see another set of characteristics that defined the Apostles in the first Church, amongst the initial Christian Believers.

God’s Word is its own best interpreter and expositor, and God has given to us the characteristics of an Apostle, his definition, in His Word in Acts 1:2-3. In these two verses, we see three characteristics that had to be present in anyone called an Apostle; these are:

  1. Chosen by the Lord (verse 2)

  2. Received commandments from the Lord (verse 2)

  3. Had seen the resurrected Lord (verse 3)

In Paul’s life, through the vision he had of the Lord on the road to Damascus (Acts 9:3-6), and the revelations he received according to which he taught and wrote to the Churches (1 Corinthians 11:23; 15:3; Galatians 1:12; 1 Thessalonians 4:2), these three characteristics were fulfilled (Acts 22:13-14). Paul affirmed about this in 1 Corinthians 9:1-2, and on multiple occasions called himself an Apostle in his letters (Romans 1:1; 1 Corinthians 1:1; 15:9; 2 Corinthians 1:1; Galatians 1:1; Ephesians 1:1; 1 Timothy 1:1). In contrast, unlike the case of Paul, as we have seen earlier, some (not all) of the ministers, as special “messengers of the Lord”, on occasions, were also called Apostles, e.g., Barnabas (Acts 14:14), Lord’s brother James (Galatians 1:19), and possibly Silas (if we see 1 Thessalonians 2:6 along with 1:1) etc. but probably all the three criteria of Acts 1:2-3 had not been fulfilled in their lives, and other than these isolated mentions for them as Apostles, they have not been addressed as Apostles, neither by the Church Elders, nor by themselves. The evident implication is that the word apostle has been used for them to convey that they were “special messengers” on the occasions the word has been used for them, but had not been appointed to the Apostolic Office, as Paul had been. And, there never was any confusion in the Church about this, it was never made an issue, it was never used as a precedence to cite and use for calling others as “apostles”, as is done these days.

There is another contrast to being appointed as Apostle by God - one instance, of men taking it upon themselves and appointing a person as an Apostle - appointing Matthias as an Apostle in place of Judas Iscariot. But the outcome of this appointment was uncertain and vague. We see in Acts 1:15-26, the disciples of the Lord were waiting to receive the power of the Holy Spirit, and then go out to preach the Gospel. They used to spend their time in prayer (Acts 1:4) and in joining worship in the Temple (Luke 24:53). In this situation, Peter got up on his own (Acts 1:15) and convinced the others to appoint another person as Apostle, in place of Judas Iscariot. Nowhere do we find written that Peter did this under the Lord’s instructions; nor does Peter say that he had prayed about this and was instructed by the Lord to do this. In contrast, the Lord Jesus before appointing the first twelve Apostles (Matthew 10:2), spent the whole night in prayer, conferring with God about this, and only then made this appointment (Luke 6:12-13). Also take note, that before His ascension, the Lord Jesus had instructed the disciples about their coming ministry, given them the Great Commission, and asked them to wait till they received the power of the Holy Spirit; but had never ever asked them to appoint someone in place of Judas Iscariot while they waited. But still, Peter stood up with this desire, justified it by quoting Scripture (Acts 1:16, 20-22), and eventually Matthias was chosen by them to replace Judas Iscariot. But there is an interesting conclusion to this whole contrived exercise, stated at the end of Acts 1:26 “And they cast their lots, and the lot fell on Matthias. And he was numbered with the eleven apostles” - the Holy Spirit only had it written that he (Matthias) was “was numbered with the eleven apostles”; whereas if this had been done in the will of God, and had the approval of God, then a more appropriate expression would have been “and he became the twelfth Apostle.” But nowhere in the New Testament is Matthias mentioned again, nor do we see him being used as an Apostle. Quite likely, in the Lord’s will, it was Paul who was to be this twelfth Apostle, as we see happened later.

As, in the first Church, even while the true apostles were present, at that time, Satan had cleverly brought in his own people and placed them as “false apostles'' (2 Corinthians 11:13) in the Church, so that they may sabotage the Lord’s work and beguile people away from the way of truth. These false apostles went around as “professional preachers'' who would preach for money and they would speak about attractive worldly things, speaking about what the people wanted to hear, and not what God had to say (2 Timothy 4:3-4). Such preachers went around carrying letters of recommendation from the people of the world, to claim status, fame, and authority, and opposed the teachings given by Paul (2 Corinthians 3:1-3). This is quite similar to what is often seen today about these self-appointed or men-appointed “apostles” - they go around blowing their own trumpet about the status, fame, commendations, and popularity they have received from the people. Then, on this basis they project themselves, their teachings, and their works as special and important, and undermine or oppose the correct and factual teachings of God’s Word given out by the true ministers of God’s Word, whose ministry is without any drama, done in humility and in truthfulness to God’s Word, through the guidance and power of the Holy Spirit. The Lord Jesus had said that the difference between the true and false prophets will become evident by their fruits (Matthew 7:16-20). On the basis of this saying of the Lord, Paul tells the Believers in Corinth, that you are our recommendation letters, and we have no need to blow our own trumpet or seek any commendation from any person, since you are the fruits of our labor which people see, and are able to discern the truth by contrasting with the “fruits” of the false apostles. The Lord too is well aware of our ministry and works, and knows the truth very well. We can see that the way of evaluating and deciding about a person being an Apostle is by what we have seen from Mark 3:13-15, from Acts 1:2-3, and by their “fruits”. Anyone claiming to be an Apostle, but not having these Biblical characteristics in him, is not a true Apostle of the Lord Jesus.

If you are a Christian Believer then it is important for you to note that most scholars of God’s Word, and those engaged in the Lord’s work in obedience to God’s Word are of the opinion that along with the passing away of the Apostles, the time of Apostolic office came to an end. After them, God never appointed any Apostles, nor ever instructed anyone to appoint any Apostles. By using the literal meaning of the word “apostles” as someone appointed for a special purpose or with a special authority to convey a message, people can misuse this term to claim a special status and privileges in the Church, acquire name and fame, and use it as a title to have authority over others. Maybe that the preaching of these alleged apostles will be very attractive and appealing, done in the name of the Lord God, having a lot of Biblical knowledge, and appear to be factual - just as Peter’s address and arguments for appointing the twelfth apostle were. But their actual truth will be seen by their fruits - their lives, the worldly and populistic themes of their preaching, their lack of adherence to the Gospel and of call for repentance from sins, the absence of the fruits of the Holy Spirit in their lives. Instead, they concentrate upon physical healings and worldly prosperity. These modern-day apostles usually inspire and lead people towards temporal blessings, and physical healings; but not towards repentance from sins, salvation and eternal life, and its eternal blessings. Biblically speaking, this is not a characteristic of a true Apostle of the Lord Jesus.
