Excommunication From the Church – 1

God has made every Born-Again Christian Believer a member of His Church and has placed him in fellowship with His other children since the moment of his salvation. Therefore, every Born-Again Christian Believer is God’s steward in these positions and has the responsibility of functioning in a manner that causes the Church to grow and the other Believers to progress in their spiritual lives. In the previous articles we have seen about the role of the Elders and the fact that every Believer needs discipline; God, through instructions and examples in His Word has shown how this discipline needs to exercised. Sometimes, some stubborn and unrelenting Believer, or someone who has committed some very serious offence, may require a harsher discipline; or, a Church Elder or Pastor may develop irreconcilable differences with some member. Usually, in such situations that Believer is either excluded from the fellowship, or is excommunicated and cast out of the church and fellowship of the Believers, and it may be communicated to other members and other Churches or Assemblies, not to keep any fellowship with such Believer. While this may be the Elder’s, or the Pastor’s personal decision, but what does the Bible have to say for such a situation? Does God’s Word permit such an action to be taken? Are there any God given guidelines and instructions for such punishment to be prescribed?

We see in God’s Word that, to maintain Church discipline, the Lord has given the mechanisms, of how this should be done. The first step is dealing with the situation at a personal level in a spirit of forgiveness with the intention to be reconciled. If there are any mutual differences, or misunderstandings, then the first attempt should be for reconciliation and mutual brotherhood, as is the nature of God, and as the Lord has instructed to His disciples in His Sermon on the Mount, in Matthew 5:23-24. We see from this passage that the Lord is instructing that not the offender, but the offended, i.e., it is the suffering person who has to take the first step, the lead in trying to reach an agreement and for reconciliation with the offender. This shows that the one who has suffered and has been wronged, now he is willing to forgive and be reconciled with the one who has created the problems. Notice that in verse 24 here, the Lord is not saying for the one who has suffered the wrong to go and make the one who has created the problems realize what he has done and how he has caused the suffering; rather, the Lord’s instructions are simple and straightforward – “First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.” This clearly shows that the one who has created problems is to be taken as and treated as a “brother” – a brother in faith, or a brother in the Lord, i.e., a member of one’s family, the family of God, and is to be reconciled with. Reconciliation and forgiveness has to start from here, with the realization and acceptance of this unalterable and irrevocable relationship, that whatever he may have done, he is still my brother, he is still a part of my God given family. In the parable of the Prodigal Son given in Luke 15, the Father uses this perspective to try to make the elder brother come around to being reconciled. With this perspective as the starting point, the Believer has to go to the problem-creator with the intention of getting reconciled; and this can only happen if the Believer is willing to forgive and re-start the relationship.

This is exactly like what the Lord God has done with us, the sinful mankind. We sinned, we disobeyed God, we hurt God, we left Him and went into the world to live a life contrary to what He wants. But it was God, the one who was offended, who made the first move to reconcile us back with Him. It was He who left the glory and majesty he had in heaven, and came down; the offended came down to the offender in humility, to forgive and reconcile us with Himself. Now, that is what He expects us to do as well (Colossians 3:12-13). In teaching His disciples what is commonly known as “The Lord’s Prayer” the Lord had taught them to expect forgiveness from God as they forgive others (Matthew 6:12), and then immediately after the prayer, He reiterated the instruction and told the disciples of the consequences of their being unforgiving (Matthew 6:14-15). The Lord emphasized on being magnanimous in forgiving in His instructions to Peter (Matthew 18:21-22); as well as taught it in His parable of the unforgiving servant (Matthew 18:23-35).

So not exclusion or expulsion, but forgiveness and reconciliation in the spirit of being family and brotherhood should be the first course of action towards the offending Believers. In the next article we will look at the next step, the Lord outlined in Matthew 18:15-17.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Repenting of your sins, and asking the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely, surrendering yourself to Him - is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. You only have to say a short but sincere prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ willingly and with a penitent heart, and at the same time completely commit and submit your life to Him. You can also make this prayer and submission in words something like, “Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sins and repent of them. I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself, paying for them through your life.  Because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, and you rose again from the grave on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God and have freely provided to me the forgiveness, and redemption from my sins, through faith in you. Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.

Believer’s Need Discipline – 2

In the previous article we have started on the topic of implementing discipline in the Church, and have begun to see that all Christian Believers, irrespective of their physical or spiritual age, their being established in God’s Word, their status and position in the Church, everyone is a fallible person, does make some mistake or the other, and therefore does need correction and being disciplined. No one is over and above this basic fact of Christian living. Even the prophet Isaiah, although already serving as God’s prophet, when he was brought into the presence of God and His Holiness, immediately realized how vile and deplorable, how unworthy of being in the presence of the Lord he actually was (Isaiah 6:1-7); the Apostle Paul laments his struggle with sin, not in the past tense, but in the present tense (Romans 7:15-24); the Apostle John, through the use of “we,” includes himself amongst those who continue to sin and need to come before God in repentance whenever they sin (1 John 1:8-10). Therefore, every Born-Again Christian Believer, being God’s steward of the Church where God has placed him in fellowship with His other children, with the help and guidance of God’s Holy Spirit residing in him, must, instead of any man or man’s teachings, make only the Lord Jesus and His Word his role-model to follow and obey. By doing this, he will be able to fulfill his responsibilities as God’s steward, to help in the growth of the Church and the Believers in their spiritual lives. In the previous article we have seen some things about the necessity of discipline in a Believer’s life, and Biblical examples of how it is to be carried out. Carrying on from there, let us consider some further Biblical facts and teachings on this topic.

God knows that every Believer is prone to committing errors and has a tendency of doing wrongs. God is patient with the Believers, and helps them come out of it, helps them to grow and mature (Psalms 37:23-24; Proverbs 24:16). Therefore, it does not mean that the one who has committed some mistakes, is, or has become an unbeliever, or has been rejected by God, or cannot be God's spokesperson, or can no longer be used by God, etc.; all such contentions are false, are unBiblical. Take for example, David, for his sin with Bathsheba and Uriah; yet in the New Testament he has been quoted very often by name, 54 times, and is again called a man after God's own heart (Acts 13:22). David still wrote his Psalms after this sordid episode, which have been included in God’s Holy Word for eternity.

Similarly, also think of the Corinthian Church, despite its sorry state of spirituality and Christian witness, it was still addressed as the Church of God by the Holy Spirit through Paul (1 Corinthians 1:1-2). Although the Believers of that Church were called carnal and immature (1 Corinthians 3:1-4), but in 1 Corinthians 1:2 they were also called “saints.” And note that nowhere in the two letters written to them, were they ever called ‘unbelievers’ or those who had been rejected by God, or, will be rejected by God. Their poor spiritual status and Christian living did not mean that God had taken back or denied them His Word and the spiritual gifts of the Holy Spirit, or was not using them; rather, Paul says that God had enriched them and gave them spiritual gifts, confirmed the testimony of the Lord Jesus through them (1 Corinthians 1:5-8). Paul criticizes them, points out their multiple and even gross shortcomings, even problems related to the Lord's Table that invited severe retribution from God (1 Corinthians 11:30); though Paul corrects them, even rebukes them severely, so-much-so that the Corinthian Believers did not like it (2 Corinthians 7:8), but he never calls them ‘unbelievers’ or ‘ungodly’.

This pointing out of one’s errors by a spiritually mature or senior Believer neither means, nor should it be seen as, or taken as insulting or belittling that errant Believer; or, that the one correcting him is opposed to him, wants to ridicule him. Nor is it denying the errant Believer’s service, standing, work, and contribution in the Church of God. Instead, this corrective action should be taken as an act of love and of concern for the well-being and spiritual growth of the Believer, it should be taken in the spirit of Psalm 141:5 and Galatians 4:16. Rather, by not pointing out the errors, and thereby allowing the errant Believer to continue in his wrongs, is actually being an irresponsible steward towards him. It is tantamount to preventing him from growing and maturing spiritually by letting him persist in his faults, and letting him harm his own eternal blessings.

In the same manner, while we are to learn from our Elders and honor them, yet we should be careful not to keep copying them and emulating the errors that the Elders might be making, even inadvertently. In any case, every person, whether a member of the Church or an Elder, or a preacher and teacher of God’s Word, everyone will be standing before the Lord to give an account of himself (2 Corinthians 5:10), not of anyone else; and then, nor will any person be able to make any recommendations for anyone else, nor will he be able influence the Lord in any manner about the rewards someone else should receive. So why go after pleasing or blindly following any person instead of following our Lord and His Word? How does following any man benefits us, if at all? On the contrary, following any man or their words only makes us more prone to falling into some man-made error or the other. Our allegiance must be with the Lord God and His Word, and not with any man, since man can always be misled by Satan as well as mislead others. As has been pointed out on numerous occasions in these articles, it is every Believer’s responsibility to always first cross-check from God’s Word everything that is being preached and taught, no matter who is preaching or teaching it; and only accept and follow whatever is preached and taught after confirming it through this verification (Acts 17:11; 1 Corinthians 14:29; 1 Thessalonians 5:21). So, having differences of opinions and criticizing or correcting an Elder and his preaching or teachings, does not mean being opposed to him or being disrespectful towards him. Rather, it shows being obedient to God and His Word, and cautious about being misled by anyone and get harmed. It should also be taken in the spirit of Psalm 141:5 and Galatians 4:16.

In the next article, we will continue with learning about implementing discipline in the Church and amongst Believers.

Believer’s Need Discipline – 1

As God’s stewards of His Church and of fellowshipping with other Believers, all Believers have to conduct themselves and help others in a manner that contributes to the growth of the Church as well as helps others to grow spiritually. In the previous articles we have seen various aspects of fulfilling this responsibility, and the role of a proper ministry of God’s Word. The Believers should never forget that the Church of God is comprised of human beings, and no person is ever perfect. We all, even the spiritually mature, the Elders, the Preachers and Teachers of God’s Word, everyone, whoever he may be, do make mistakes some time or the other, and we all need corrections for our mistakes, from time to time. God knows this, is patient and longsuffering about it, and has made provisions in His Church and amongst His Believers for His children to be made aware of their mistakes, and of being told how to correct them. But those who do not take this correction in the right way, will then eventually have to bear the consequences of their being stubborn or egoistic about it.

Therefore, no one in God’s church should live and function with the misunderstanding that they are perfect and do not make any mistakes; or that no one has the right to point out anything wrong in them and thereby hurt their feelings or lower their status in the Church. Nor should they think that if there is anything wrong in them, then God will tell them about it directly. Another form of this misunderstanding is that some Believer’s think that since a particular Elder or Believer has not said anything about something in their lives, therefore, no one else has the ability, right, or authority to point it out either – how God uses one Elder or Believer, or another, is God’s discretion. God can point out one thing to one person, and another thing to another, and use them for different things in the same Believers life. We can neither direct God about this, nor assume things about His functioning.

We see from God’s Word that it is God’s method of working that He uses His ministers to speak to and point out the errors and their consequences to the people of the world, not only to the Gentiles, e.g. Jonah and Nahum spoke to the people of Nineveh, and Obadiah spoke to Edomites; but He also does the same with His own people. The prophets of the Old Testament did just that to the Israelites – spoke to them, even to Kings and dignitaries, usually publicly and boldly, and warned them of the coming wrath of God for their disobedience and straying away from God; the writings of the Old Testament prophets are all on this theme. We also see that God even used His prophets to indirectly speak to not only His people in general, but even to His chosen and appointed ones, instead of speaking directly with these few special ones; e.g., Samuel rebuked King Saul for his disobedience (1 Samuel 13:13-14; 15:17-23). Even though God was using David to write Psalms that would later be included in His Word, and thus, could have spoken to him directly and privately, but God spoke to him about his wrong through Nathan; who not only spoke to King David but also rebuked him for his sin against Uriah and Bathsheba (2 Samuel 12:1-14). Isaiah rebuked King Hezekiah after he had exposed the kingdom to the Babylonians (Isaiah 39); Azariah and eighty other Priest withstood King Uzziah, when he transgressed God’s instructions, and even thrust him out of the Temple (2 Chronicles 26:16-20). All the letters of the New Testament, have been written by the men of God, to other Churches and men of God, to point out their short-comings and errors, and to correct them. In these letters to the Churches, which not only were read to the whole Church, but were also circulated to the other surrounding churches (Colossians 4:16; 1 Thessalonians 5:27), names of some people doing wrong have been also been written and thus they became public knowledge.

Every Christian Believer, no matter what his age, spiritual maturity, and commitment to the Lord, whatever may be his quality and quantity of service for the Lord, however well versed he may be in God's Word, whatever may be his position and status in the Church; yet he is still a fallible human being, prone to make mistakes and commit errors, whether knowingly or unknowingly, habitually or occasionally. Therefore, God does use other people to point out our mistakes and the way to correct them, so that no one may consider themselves any more than they should. Rather, it is God’s instruction in His Word, the Bible that the other spiritually mature people of God should correct the errant Believers – Galatians 6:1-2; James 5:19-20; and there is no Biblical instruction that this necessarily must be done privately, the common examples are of pointing out the errors and correcting publicly. The working principle seems to be of that if the persons disregard and disobey God, and sin against Him publicly, they should not expect a private response from God an application of Mark 4:22-24). The reason might be that people being aware of a likely public exposure and rebuke for their wrongs, will remain careful to not commit mistakes, or continue in them, and thereby remain safe from satanic ploys.

That is why, knowing and understanding that no man is ever perfect, infallible, and always correct, our role model always must only be the Lord Jesus, and not any man, ever. To live and function in the fear of man is to invite trouble (Proverbs 29:25) even if it is a fear of consideration for that person; i.e., to be more concerned about offending some man, rather than being concerned about offending God, can bring problems in our lives.

Role of Elders

In the preceding articles we have been studying about the Born-Again Christian Believers being placed in and being made stewards of God’s Church and of fellowship with God’s other children from the moment they are Born-Again. While considering the implications of what we learnt, in the article of 26th January on the implications, we had seen how, despite their different God given ministries and responsibilities, the Believers are not independent of each other and the Church, but are accountable to the Church and also to the other Believers that they are in fellowship with. Today, we will look at some things related to the role of the Elders in the Church, i.e., the stewardship of the Elders towards the Church and the Believers.

God’s Word, the Bible teaches us that the local Churches and their members, are to function under the care of certain Elders that have been given the responsibility of looking after and managing the Church. The appointment, role, function, and authority, etc., of various kinds of Church Elders is a vast subject, and we will not be considering it here. We have seen that God has given responsibilities and assigned works to be done for every Believer (Ephesians 2:10) in His Church. The Believers have been given the Holy Spirit and the gifts of the Holy Spirit to fulfill their responsibilities with the help of and under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Though these works and responsibilities have to be carried out under the supervision and care of Elders of that local Church, but the Elders should always keep in mind that God is still the owner of His Church; and since they, the Elders have been placed over the members by God, to look after them, therefore, they will have to give an account to God for them (Hebrews 13:17). Moreover, the Elders should bear in mind that the Believers placed under them are not their voiceless servants, or slaves; they are not to be treated as those who cannot say anything to the Elder, or ask any questions to the Elders, or show any disagreement towards the Elders. The Elders should never forget that even they are mere human-beings, and like other human-beings, they too can make mistakes, can be led astray and deceived by Satan, and under the influence of Satan they too can lead others astray as well as deceive them – knowingly or unknowingly. In God’s Church, God is still the final authority, and amongst His children, things have to be done as per His will, the way He wants them done. God has given all the necessary instructions in His Word; since He will never go contrary to His will that He has already expressed in His Word; therefore, the Elders have to take care of the congregation, as God has instructed in His Word.

One passage that is of great help in learning about and carrying out this responsibility, by both, Elders and congregation in the prescribed manner is 1 Peter 5:1-5. In this passage, Peter exhorts the Elders to function as a shepherd, i.e., patiently, gently, and with perseverance, always remembering that it is not their own but God’s flock that they are looking after, so they will have to give an account for them to God. They should not tend God’s flock for dishonest gain, nor try to use it for personal benefit and temporal gains – a good guide for this is Paul’s example in 1 Corinthians chapter 9, where he explains his responsibilities, rights, authority, remuneration and how he functioned as a minister of God. Peter goes on to say in verse 3 that the Elders should set themselves up as examples to God’s flock, and not behave as lords over them; i.e., they should lead by example not force or coercion, as we see from the life of Paul too. Then, in verse 4, Peter urges the Elders to wait for their “Chief Shepherd” to come and give them their eternal, unfading rewards; once again implying that they should not seek and desire getting temporal gains from God’s flock entrusted to them. Then, in verse 5, Peter also instructs the congregation about their responsibility – they should submit themselves to the Elders, as well as to each other, and remain humble in all things, waiting for God to exalt them in due time (verse 6). So, for the benefit of the Church and of the congregation, the Elders and the congregation, both have to work hand-in-hand, helping and supplementing each other; one cannot function properly without the other, both have to fulfil their respective responsibilities.

In Luke 12:45-46, usurping and misusing the authority given by the Master to His servant, is a sign of bad stewardship, and will invite severe retribution (also see Ezekiel chapter 34 in this context). From the next article we will start considering about maintaining discipline in the Church.

Blessed and Successful Life / आशीषित एवं सफल जीवन – 159 – Stewards of The Church / कलीसिया के भण्डारी – 41

Practical Implications – 11

All Born-Again Christian Believers, at the moment of their salvation are made a part of God’s Church and are placed by God in fellowship of His other children. For these God given privileges, every Believer is also a steward of God and accountable to Him for fulfilling his stewardship worthily. As stewards of God’s Church and of the fellowship of His children, the Believers are to be involved in the growth of the Church and spiritual progress of God’s other children. For this, as we have learnt in the past few articles, the role of the ministry of God’s Word is of paramount importance. Those entrusted with the ministry of God’s Word are to serve God’s Word to the Church and God’s children regularly, adequately, and properly – both in quality as well quantity. In the recent articles we have seen some aspects of this ministry, and in the last article we saw From Paul’s summary of his ministry in Ephesus that he, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, had unhesitatingly declared to them the whole counsel of God. Therefore, when he went from Ephesus to Macedonia, he left Timothy behind to ensure that those who preach and teach there, should not teach anything other than what Paul had taught. We saw the salient features of Paul’s ministry in Ephesus, which provide a scriptural guideline for us today to follow, especially for those engaged in the ministry of God’s Word. Today we will consider some more Biblical instructions in context of the Word ministry; instructions that help the Church to grow and the Believers to progress in their spiritual lives.

Having seen some very important aspects of the ministry of God’s Word for the growth and progress of the Church and the Believers from 1 Timothy 1:3-4 in the recent articles, there is another important instruction to also take note of, stated later in Paul’s this first letter to Timothy. In 1 Timothy 4:6, having given instructions to Timothy through the Holy Spirit, Paul asks him to instruct others about that which has been given i.e., has been taught or instructed to him. Through our study of 1 Timothy 1:3-4 in the previous two articles, we have already seen and understood why Paul is asking Timothy to do this. But here, in 1 Timothy 4:6, we see another benefit, for the preacher, of sincerely preaching and teaching God’s pure Word in its truth and entirety, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

It is written here that by doing this “you will be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished in the words of faith and of the good doctrine which you have carefully followed.” In other words, Paul is pointing out to Timothy that when he faithfully instructs others about God’s pure Word, and he himself also takes care to carefully continue to follow the ‘good doctrine’ that he is preaching and teaching to others, it will contribute to his own spiritual growth and stability. So, here we have mentioned a two-fold benefit of being “a good minister of Jesus Christ” i.e., sincerely and honestly ministering God’s Word, instead of being a minister of man’s word, instead of ministering fables and genealogies contrived by man. These two benefits are, firstly it will cause the growth and progress of the Church and the Believers, and secondly, it will cause such a preacher and teacher to himself be “nourished in the words of faith and of the good doctrine” which he shares and also carefully follows. The lesson is, for the Believer’s own spiritual growth, they should sincerely and honestly teach others, the true and unadulterated Word of God.

As one goes through both these letters of instructions written by Paul to Timothy, we see that nowhere does he ask or encourage him to use his own wisdom and understanding about this ministry. Rather, Paul only asks and repeatedly emphasizes upon him to instruct others about what he has already received, has already been instructed about. Timothy had mainly learned these things through his association with Paul; and we have seen earlier that Paul always preached, taught, and instructed nothing out of his own knowledge, wisdom, and understanding, but only what he received from the Lord, what he had under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. This instruction of Paul to Timothy is very similar to what the Lord Jesus had instructed His disciples at the time of His ascension, in the Great Commission (Matthew 28:18-20) – the disciples had to preach and teach only that which the Lord had taught them, and do so under the power of the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:8). Since their obedience to the Lord’s instructions was essential, therefore, by implication, they were not to practice, preach, or teach anything that they contrived through their own wisdom and understanding.

In his second letter to Timothy, Paul also asks him to be one who rightly divides God's Word (2 Timothy 2:14-17); and for any person this discernment can only come through being dependent upon the Holy Spirit, since one of the functions of the Holy Spirit as the Believer’s Helper is to teach and expound God’s Word to them (John 14:26; 16:13; 1 Corinthians 2:10-14). It is a sad and a very difficult to understand bitter fact of Christianity, that in the Churches or Assemblies and amongst Believers, there is an inordinate but prevalent tendency for Believers to rely more upon men, men’s teachings, words, and writings, and often even on men’s fables, than upon the Holy Spirit of God to learn God’s Word and its practical implications and application in life. And, this tendency manifests itself in many ways in the life of Believers, e.g., of following men, of in blind faith copying the words, phrases, and mannerisms of men without cross-checking and examining them, and forming factions in the Church; of causing and maintaining divisions in the Church and amongst Believers; of ignoring the God given methods and the Biblical instructions for the functioning of the Church and instead following man-made rules, regulations and instructions; of putting man before God in taking decisions; of trying to be a man-pleaser rather than a God pleaser; of being more afraid of man than of God; etc., and it sooner or later leads to various problems in the Believer’s own lives, in the Church, and in fellowship amongst God’s children.

If we, for whatever reasons, are unable to contribute to the growth and progress of the Church and the Believers; then the least we can do is not in any way preach and teach things that contribute to disunity and divisions in the Church. For this, all that we need to do is to stop following persons and copying their words, and actually start following God and obeying His Word. Paul through the Holy Spirit, has set himself as an example of following the Lord, and wants that others too should follow the Lord in the same manner as he was doing, since what he was preaching and teaching was not something he had devised, but what he had received from the Lord for the Believers and Church of the Lord (1 Corinthians 11:1; 1 Thessalonians 4:1-2).

From the next article we will start considering the role of the Church Elders and some aspects of enforcing discipline in the Church.
