Teachings Related to the Gospel – 21

In the previous article we had seen the Biblical meaning of being a Christian, that it is to be a disciple of Christ; which is quite unlike the commonly believed and accepted meaning associated with those who profess to be the followers of the Christian religion and fulfils its requirements. We have also seen that the Christian Faith, being Born-Again to become a follower of the Lord Jesus, and the Christian religion are not the same. Christan religion being man-made; it has not been given, preached, or taught by the Lord Jesus at any time, and is all about following and fulfilling man-made denominational rites, rituals, festivals, and observances. In the Christian religion following of denominational rules, regulations, festivals, and observances, and the implementation of the will and directives of human leadership takes over-ruling precedence over Biblical text, teachings, and obedience to the Lord Jesus and His Word; the rules and regulations of the denominations and their officials come first, and only after them come the things written in the Bible, and that too only after they have been suitably contorted and deformed to conform with the denominational rules and regulations. We also saw from the Lord’s Great Commission to His disciples (Matthew 28:19-20), the responsibilities He has given to all His disciples, His followers, the Biblical Christians. Without learning about and understanding this fundamental difference between the actual Biblical meaning, in stark contrast to the worldly meaning of being a Christian, it is not possible to understand what it actually means to believe in the gospel.

In the earlier articles, we have seen that during the time of the earthly ministry of the Lord Jesus, the Jews had an expectation that the time of the arrival of the promised Messiah, Christ the deliverer had been fulfilled, and they were living in anticipation of his arrival at any time (Luke 3:15). But they were expecting to be delivered from the Roman rule, and the rule over Israel being reverted back into their hands (Luke 19:11; 24:21; Acts 1:6). So, when the Lord Jesus began His ministry with the call to repent since the Kingdom of God was at hand (Mark 1:15), the people thought that the Lord was talking about delivering them from Roman rule, and handing over the Kingdom of Israel – Kingdom of God’s people, back into their hands; and to them that was what the good news, the gospel was. It did not strike them at all, despite all the preaching and teaching done by the Lord Jesus, that He was talking about people being delivered from the bondage of sin and thereby become acceptable to enter the heavenly Kingdom of God, which can only be through being Born-Again (John 3:3, 5). It was after the followers of the Lord Jesus had been filled and empowered by the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost, that the disciples of the Lord understood and preached the necessity of repentance and believing in the Lord Jesus for remission of sins (Acts 2:37-38), i.e., the imperativeness of believing in the gospel. That is when the true meaning of the gospel became apparent to the disciples of the Lord, under the guidance and power of the Holy Spirit.

Before we move ahead with understanding the gospel and about believing in it, a quick digression to a related topic is essential to avoid and/or clear up some other very common misconceptions related to the being a Christian, i.e., a disciple of the Lord Jesus, and believing in the gospel. Quite contrary to the very prevalent and commonly taught misinterpretation of the Bible, receiving and being baptized by the Holy Spirit are not any separate experiences or phenomenon; they happen at the moment a person is Born-Again. Every Born-Again Christian Believer, from the moment he repents of his sins, accepts the Lord Jesus as His personal Savior, and submits his life to the Lord to live in obedience to Him and His Word, becomes a child of God (John 1:12-13), i.e., a part of the family of God. At the same moment he also becomes the Temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 3:16; 6:19). The Holy Spirit comes to permanently reside in him from the moment of his believing and being saved (Acts 19:2; Galatians 3:2; 4:6; Ephesians 1:13-14). Since it is only through the Holy Spirit that the Believer can claim to belong to the Lord and call Jesus as Lord (Romans 8:9; 1 Corinthians 12:3), therefore, the Holy Spirit has to be in him since the moment of his salvation; it cannot be otherwise. The clear teaching of the Bible is that the Holy Spirit is not received through any works done by anyone, but is given by God as a gift (Acts 2:33, 38-39; 5:32; 2 Corinthians 1:21-22; 5:5; Galatians 4:6), and given by Him only to those who come into faith (Galatians 3:2, 5, 14), i.e., to the disciples of the Lord Jesus. This receiving of the Holy Spirit by the initial disciples of the Lord on the day of Pentecost was referred to by the Lord Jesus as being baptized by the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:5). And later, when those who are Born-Again through the ministry of Peter received the Holy Spirit at the moment of their salvation, it has again been called the “Baptism of the Holy Spirit” (Acts 11:15-17) in the Bible. Paul has referred to it in the past tense as ‘baptized’ in 1 Corinthians 12:13, in context of being made a part of the body, the Church, by coming into faith; instead of it being mentioned as a future anticipation, or something one should desire and strive for. To interpret this in a manner different from what the Lord Jesus and His Apostles have done, is to deliberately contradict God’s Word and impose one’s own understanding and interpretation on God’s Word to mislead others into errors.

In the next article we will see what the term gospel means for us today, and then we will see about the meaning of believing in the gospel.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Repenting of your sins, and asking the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely, surrendering yourself to Him - is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. You only have to say a short but sincere prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ willingly and with a penitent heart, and at the same time completely commit and submit your life to Him. You can also make this prayer and submission in words something like, “Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sins and repent of them. I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself, paying for them through your life.  Because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, and you rose again from the grave on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God and have freely provided to me the forgiveness, and redemption from my sins, through faith in you. Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.

Teachings Related to the Gospel – 20

For a Christian’s growth and edification, he needs to be well versed in God’s Word the Bible, and apply its teachings in his life. In earlier articles, at the beginning of this series, we have seen three kinds of Biblical teachings – those related to the gospel, those related to the elementary principles of Christ, and those related to practical Christian living, are fundamental to this growth and edification. Presently we are considering the teachings related to the gospel, and in this we have seen that learning the teachings related to repentance and about believing in the gospel is of paramount importance. In this context we have already considered teachings related to repentance, and in learning teachings related to believing the gospel, we had said that to understand what believing in the gospel means, we need to understand what, Biblically speaking, being a Christian actually means.

In the past few articles, from the Gospel Accounts and the Book of Acts in the New Testament section of the Bible, we have seen that there is no Biblical support, no grounds whatsoever, for the very common notion that by being born in a “Christian” family and fulfilling certain rites and rituals of the Christian religion, one automatically is a “Christian,” is acceptable to God, and will enter God’s Kingdom; these are unBiblical and absolutely wrong concepts and teachings. The Biblical teaching is very clear and unambiguous that only those who repent of their sins, accept the Lordship of Christ Jesus, and individually, voluntarily, deliberately decide on living a life of surrender and obedience to the Lord Jesus and His Word, only they are the followers of the Lord, His disciples. In the last article we have seen that this kind of living, of following the Lord, was called “the way of the Lord” in the Word and those who had made this decision, i.e., the disciples of the Lord Jesus, were known as “the people of the Way.” Quite unlike the common understanding and popular notion, there is no mention or indication in the Bible of following the Lord Jesus, being His disciple ever being a religion, a matter of fulfilling religious observances; rather the Biblical concept is, being His disciple is always about submission and obedience to the Lord, His Word, and of discipleship. Today we will see how the word “Christian” came to be associated with the disciples or followers of the Lord Jesus.

In Acts 11:26, for the first time in the Bible, and in the history of Christianity, the word “Christian” has been used “…And the disciples were first called Christians in Antioch.” Once again, we see the primary position and undeniable necessity of being a disciple – as written in the verse, it was the disciples of the Lord Jesus who were called Christians; and not the followers of any religion, not those who fulfilled any religious rites, rituals, and observances. So here we have the Biblical definition, that the Holy Spirit has had recorded in God’s Word for all times and for the whole world, of who a Christian is – a Christian is a disciple of Christ; and we have seen above and earlier, how and on what grounds one becomes a disciple of the Lord Jesus. It is a matter of general knowledge and common sense that no one can ever be born as a disciple of someone; everyone must personally decide and become someone’s disciple. Hence, to reiterate what has been stated before, no one can be born as a disciple or follower of the Lord Jesus; everyone must be Born-Again through repentance of sins, acceptance of the Lordship of Jesus Christ, and deciding to live surrendered and obedient to Him. The word “Christian” has been used two more times in the Bible, in Acts 26:28 and in 1 Peter 4:16, and at both places it is in context of being a follower of disciple of the Lord Jesus.

Having seen and understood from God’s Word, what it actually means to be a “Christian” we can now better comprehend the Lord’s commandment to His disciples, the Great Commission given by the Lord before His ascension, and understand some of the implications of being a Christian. In this Great Commission, the Lord said to His disciples, “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Amen.” (Matthew 28:19-20). Note that the Lord never asked His disciples to go, preach and teach any religion, or convert people to any religion. The basic truth of the Bible is that the Lord neither propounded nor preached and taught any religion; nor did He ask His disciples to go and preach and teach any religion, or convert anyone from one religion to another. The Lord clearly stated to His disciples to go and make disciples of all nations. Another thing to take note of is that this discipleship was not conferred by baptism; instead, those who had become disciples, had repented of their sins, and surrendered their lives to the Lord Jesus, they were to be baptized. In other words, baptism never makes anyone a “Christian;” but those who become Christians by the Biblical definition, they are to be baptized, as the Lord has commanded. Therefore, true Biblical baptism is always of adults, never of infants and children, since they are not the disciples of Christ Jesus by birth and do not fulfil the basic requirement of being baptized. It is to be noted that the Lord gave all His disciples the authority to baptize; any true disciple of the Lord can baptize a new Believer. The Lord has never stated any special ability or training to baptize, nor is it written anywhere in the Bible. The demand for this special ability or training to for the baptism to be legitimate is not found in Christian Faith; but it is a demand of the Christian religion, and like most of the other things of the religion, this too is extra-Biblical, having been contrived by men. The next thing to note in the Lord’s Great Commission is that those who become disciples of the Lord, they are to be taught “...to observe all things that I have commanded you;” i.e., they are to be taught God’s Word, not man-made traditions, rituals, and doctrines, as is usually done in all denominations and sects where the members are taught the denomination’s doctrinal beliefs and the denominational teachings in the name of God’s Word. This is the same as what the Lord Jesus rebuked the religious leaders of His time for, in Matthew 15:7-9, calling them hypocrites and their worship as “vain worship.”

Now, having understood from God’s Word, the meaning, and implications of the term “Christian,” we can now move ahead and understand what it means to believe in the gospel; and we will look into this in the next article.

Teachings Related to the Gospel – 19

We have seen in the previous articles that repentance and believing in the gospel are two teachings of paramount importance in learning about the gospel. Of these, we have considered some important but rarely considered and taught teachings related to repentance; and are now considering teachings related to believing in the gospel. In this context, in the last article we had seen that in the first Church, only those who were saved, by repenting of their sins and accepting the Lord Jesus as their personal savior, i.e., those who were Believers, were added to the Church, and none else; not even the family members of the saved person, the Believer. Whoever was added to the Church, was added only by the Lord Jesus; no man, whoever he may have been, had the permission or authority to add anyone to the Lord’s Church, and no one took it upon himself to add anyone to the Church. At the time of the first Church, everyone who wanted to follow the Lord and be a part of His Church, had to be saved, had to become a Believer, individually, voluntarily, and deliberately. A person’s decision to follow the Lord did not automatically also apply to his family members; and a family’s decision to follow the Lord did not automatically apply to an individual who did not go with the family’s decision.

We see from Acts 5:14 that through the ministry of the Apostles and the disciples of the Lord Jesus (Acts 5:42), the number of Believers increased rapidly, and multitudes of believing men and women were added to the Lord. Again, it says in Acts 6:1 that the number of disciples were multiplying. Note that till this point God’s Word calls the followers of the Lord Jesus as ‘disciples;’ it does not speak of them as “Christians.” Following the martyrdom of Stephen, a great persecution of the Church arose in Jerusalem, and most of the Church members, who, we have seen, were all saved and Believers, were scattered into the surrounding regions (Acts 8:1). Paul, then known as Saul, continued to wreak havoc amongst the followers of the Lord (Acts 9:1), who are still being referred to as “the disciples of the Lord” in God’s Word. Then in Acts 18:25-26, the Holy Spirit, in relation to the ministry of Apollos, Aquilla, and Priscilla, introduces a new term for following the Lord – “the way of the Lord.” This term is then applied to the disciples, the followers of the Lord, and they are called “the people of The Way” and their faith and way of living is called “The Way” (Acts 19:9, 23; 22:4; 24:14, 22) in the Word.

There are two important things to note here: firstly, this term “the way” has been applied to the disciples, or the followers of the Lord Jesus; i.e., the basic criteria of being a person of ‘the way’ was the same as it was for being a follower of the Lord – individually, voluntarily, deliberately deciding to repent of sins, obey and follow the Lord Jesus. There is no mention or indication that anyone was ever inducted into ‘the way’ through any other means. Secondly, never ever, nowhere in the Bible has following the Lord Jesus ever been stated, or even implied as being the same as following a religion, converting to a religion, and adhering to some prescribed religious practices and rituals. True Biblical Christianity never was a religion, is still not a religion, and never will be religion. It always has been a way of living out ones Faith in the Lord Jesus and His Word, and that is what it always will be. The Christian Faith, the Way, and Christian religion, though associated with the same name – Jesus Christ, and the same book – the Bible, are two entirely different things. Christian Faith is all about repenting of sins, and living a life submitted and obedient to the Lord Jesus and His Word, and following His Way, trusting in the Lord to for being righteous and acceptable to God, to enter His kingdom. Whereas Christian religion is all about obeying men, commandments of men, and fulfilling religious rites, rituals, feasts, festivals etc. most of which are man devised, have never even been mentioned in the Bible, were never instituted by God, and were never practised by the first Church, and trusting that fulfilling of these religious activities will make person righteous and acceptable to God, to enter His Kingdom – and we have seen from many examples earlier that this is a vain, futile thought, that has no support whatsoever from God’s Word.

We will carry on from here in the next article, and explore this a little more.

Teachings Related to the Gospel – 18

In the previous article we have seen that in the four Gospel accounts, the word “Christian” has never been used; neither by the Lord Jesus, nor by His disciples, nor by the general public, for anyone associated with, or following the Lord Jesus. During the time of the Lord’s earthly ministry, the crowds and His disciples were with Him; and out of those disciples He chose twelve and called them Apostles. We saw that the Lord had called people to follow Him individually; but calling one person did not automatically make his other family members the Lord’s disciples; each one had to come to the Lord individually. Being a disciple of the Lord did not make the family of that disciple special for the public; and even the Lord Jesus did not treat His own family as anyone special because of their relationship with Him. This emphasizes that those who want to follow the Lord, must come to a personal decision to follow Him, and do it as an individual; it is not done because of familial relationships and lineage. Today we will see and learn from how people came to be associated with the Lord Jesus and became His followers in the initial Church.

In the New Testament, immediately after the four Gospel accounts is the book of Acts; it is the history of the first Church, i.e., the account of the activities of the initial followers of the Lord Jesus Christ. These followers of the Lord Jesus learnt about the Lord through the ministry of the Apostles and the disciples of the Lord Jesus, who were empowered on the day of Pentecost by the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:1-4). The first preaching was done on the day of Pentecost by Peter, and about three thousand people accepted his message, repented of their sins, were baptized, and were added to the disciples that day (Acts 2:38-41). From then on, the ministry of the Lord’s followers flourished, and people were added to them daily (Acts 2:42-47).

Here, in Acts 2:47, there is something very important mentioned; it says, “… And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved.” There are two important things to note in this statement about the growth of the first Church: firstly, it was the Lord who added people to His Church; no Apostle, no disciple of the Lord did this, and neither did any individual do it on his own. Whoever was added, was added by the Lord, not any man. Secondly, the Lord added only “those who were being saved.” This is like what John the Baptist did; he baptized only those who repented of their sins and refused to baptize those who wanted to get it done as a ritual (Matthew 3:5-8). This fact, of only the Lord adding to the Church, and adding only the “Believers,” is reiterated and affirmed in Acts 5:12-14. On the basis of this Biblical fact, the present day Church elders and leaders should very seriously introspect and examine that the kind of people, and the reasons according to which they are making people “members” of the Church, and then because of those “members” the fingers that are pointed at the Church, for all this will they be able to stand before the Lord and give an account of what they did; will they be able to withstand His wrath?

Though miracles, signs, wonders, healings, etc. were being done through the Apostles, but neither they, nor any other person could add anyone to the Lord’s Church. Also note that those who experienced these miracles, signs, wonders, healings, etc., have not been called “saved,” or “Believers,” or “followers of the Lord;” i.e., experiencing and receiving these supernatural phenomena, through and in the name of the Lord, is no indicator or criteria of having being saved, or being accepted as a Believer, nor of being a part of the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ.

The lessons we draw from this are that no man, be it the Lord’s Apostle or a disciple, had the authority to add anyone to the Lord’s Church. Even those desiring to be a part of the Church could not do it on their own. The Lord had said in Matthew 16:18 that He would build His Church, and In the Lord’s Church only those chosen and approved by the Lord find a place; no one else. Another important thing to note is that only those who were saved or those who were Believers (Acts 2:37; 5:14), i.e., those who had repented of their sins and personally had accepted the Lord Jesus as their savior and Lord (Acts 2:38), were added to the Church by the Lord Jesus. Moreover, the precondition of being saved, being a Believer, for being added to the Church by the Lord Jesus, clearly implies an adult taking a conscious, deliberate decision as an individual about his sins and his repentance; as the construction and sense of the sentences in these verses make it apparent, this being saved or being a Believer and then being added to the Church by the Lord, was being done on an individual basis. Therefore, this automatically rules out their becoming a part of the Church of the Lord, those who have not taken the decision to repent, be saved and be a Believer. In other words, an individual’s decision, did not automatically carry over to the family, nor did the family elder’s or some family member’s decision automatically apply to the other members of the family. It was not that someone got saved, or became a Believer, and because of that his family too was considered followers of the Lord and added to the Church by the Lord. Another important thing to take note of is that because a person has experienced miracles, signs, wonders, healings, etc. does not imply that he has been saved, has become a Believer, and is a part of the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ.

So far we have seen that all this is happening, multitudes of both men and women are becoming Believers, are being saved, are being added to the Church by the Lord, yet they have not been called “Christians” as yet, in God’s Word, but they have been given a peculiar name by the people. We will take it up from here in the next article.
