मसीही विश्वासी के गुण

पिछले लेखों में हमने परमेश्वर के वचन बाइबल की प्रेरितों के काम पुस्तक, जो प्रथम चर्च या मण्डली के आरंभ तथा गतिविधियों का संक्षिप्त इतिहास है, में से उस मण्डली के लोगों से संबंधित पाँच बातों को देखा, जिनमें वे “लौलीन” रहते थे। साथ ही हमने यह भी देखा कि जो मसीही विश्वासियों के लिए “लौलीन” रहने वाली बातें है, उन्हीं को मसीही या ईसाई धर्म का पालन करने वालों ने एक रीति या रस्म बना लिया है, और उन्हें उस गणित के समीकरण के समान देखते, सिखाते, और निभाते हैं, कि मसीही विश्वासी इन बातों का पालन करते हैं इसलिए इन बातों का पालन करने वाले भी स्वतः ही मसीही विश्वासी होंगे। इन धर्म-कर्म-रस्म का पालन करने में भरोसा रखने वालों ने उन बातों के निर्वाह के संबंध में अपने ही नियम और विधियाँ, जिनका बाइबल में कोई उल्लेख नहीं है, स्थापित कर के, इन बातों के निर्वाह करने को धर्म के निर्वाह के लिए एक अपेक्षित तथा वांछनीय औपचारिकता बना दिया है। किन्तु जैसे प्रभु यीशु मसीह ने अपने समय के धर्म के अगुवों से, उनके द्वारा मनुष्यों की बनाई हुई विधियों को परमेश्वर की बातें कहकर सिखाने को व्यर्थ उपासना करना कहा था, “और ये व्यर्थ मेरी उपासना करते हैं, क्योंकि मनुष्यों की विधियों को धर्मोपदेश कर के सिखाते हैं” (मत्ती 15:9), वैसे ही आज भी प्रभु की यही बात वर्तमान में भी मनुष्यों के गढ़े हुए विधि-विधानों पर उतनी ही लागू है, उनके विषय उतनी ही सत्य है जितनी तब थी। प्रभु ने उन बातों और उनके औपचारिक निर्वाह की शिक्षा देने वालों के लिए एक और बात भी कही थी, और वो भी आज के लिए उतनी ही महत्वपूर्ण है, “उसने उत्तर दिया, हर पौधा जो मेरे स्वर्गीय पिता ने नहीं लगाया, उखाड़ा जाएगा। उन को जाने दो; वे अन्धे मार्ग दिखाने वाले हैं: और अन्‍धा यदि अन्धे को मार्ग दिखाए, तो दोनों गड़हे में गिर पड़ेंगे” (मत्ती 15:13-14)।

प्रेरितों 2 अध्याय में, परमेश्वर पवित्र आत्मा की सामर्थ्य प्राप्त करने के तुरंत बाद, प्रेरित पतरस द्वारा यरूशलेम में संसार के विभिन्न भागों से पर्व मनाने के लिए एकत्रित “भक्त यहूदियों” को किया गया प्रथम सुसमाचार प्रचार दर्ज है। पतरस द्वारा किए गए इस सुसमाचार प्रचार की प्रतिक्रिया में, लिखा है, “तब सुनने वालों के हृदय छिद गए, और वे पतरस और शेष प्रेरितों से पूछने लगे, कि हे भाइयो, हम क्या करें?” (प्रेरितों 2:37)। उनके इस प्रश्न का पतरस द्वारा दिया गया उत्तर था “पतरस ने उन से कहा, मन फिराओ, और तुम में से हर एक अपने अपने पापों की क्षमा के लिये यीशु मसीह के नाम से बपतिस्मा ले; तो तुम पवित्र आत्मा का दान पाओगे। क्योंकि यह प्रतिज्ञा तुम, और तुम्हारी सन्तानों, और उन सब दूर दूर के लोगों के लिये भी है जिन को प्रभु हमारा परमेश्वर अपने पास बुलाएगा। उसने बहुत और बातों में भी गवाही दे देकर समझाया कि अपने आप को इस टेढ़ी जाति से बचाओ” (प्रेरितों 2:38-40)। यहाँ हम पवित्र आत्मा की अगुवाई में पतरस द्वारा उन मसीही विश्वासियों के करने के लिए कही गई तीन बातों को देखते हैं: “मन फिराओ”, “बपतिस्मा लो”, और “अपने आप को इस टेढ़ी जाति से बचाओ”। दिए गए क्रम के अनुसार, मसीही विश्वासी, या प्रभु यीशु मसीह का अनुयायी हो जाने के लिए उठाया जाने वाला पहला कदम है व्यक्ति के द्वारा मन-फिराव, अर्थात पापों से पश्चाताप करके, पापी जीवन से मुँह मोड़ लेना, और पापी जीवन की बातों को छोड़ देना। फिर दूसरा कदम है अपने मन-फिराव के निर्णय को लोगों पर बपतिस्मा लेने के द्वारा प्रकट करना, और तब तीसरा कदम है अपने इस बदले हुए मन और जीवन के अनुसार अपनी संगति को सुधारना और उन लोगों से पृथक हो जाना जो वापस उन्हीं बुराइयों और सांसारिकता की बातों में ले जा सकते हैं - अपने आप को इस टेढ़ी जाति से बचाओ। 

जो मसीही विश्वासी बन जाते हैं, फिर वे प्रेरितों 2:42 की चारों बातों में, जिन्हें हम देख चुके हैं, लौलीन रहते हैं। अर्थात, हमें यहाँ पर परमेश्वर पवित्र आत्मा ने पतरस के द्वारा मसीही विश्वासी हो जाने के सात चिह्न प्रदान किए हैं:

1. स्वेच्छा से मन-फिराव का निर्णय ले लेना 

2. अपने बदले हुए जीवन की गवाही के लिए बपतिस्मा लेना 

3. बदले हुए जीवन की सुरक्षा और अपनी आत्मिक उन्नति के लिए बुरी संगति और बातों से अपने आप को पृथक कर लेना 

प्रभु परमेश्वर और व्यावहारिक मसीही जीवन को जानने, उसमें बढ़ने, और उसे जीने के लिए:

4. बाइबल की शिक्षा लेते रहना 

5. अन्य मसीही विश्वासियों की संगति में बने रहना 

6. प्रभु-भोज में नियमित भाग लेते रहना 

7. प्रार्थना में लगे रहना 

उपरोक्त सभी बातों से स्पष्ट है कि बाइबल के अनुसार मसीही विश्वास का जीवन किसी धर्म के निर्वाह का जीवन नहीं है, वरन प्रभु यीशु की शिष्यता और आज्ञाकारिता का जीवन है। साथ ही मसीही विश्वासी या प्रभु यीशु के अनुयायी होने के लिए किसी धर्म परिवर्तन की नहीं, वरन मन परिवर्तन की, और परिवर्तित जीवन का निर्वाह करने की आवश्यकता है। इसलिए यदि आपने अभी तक अपने आप को प्रभु यीशु मसीह की शिष्यता में समर्पित नहीं किया है, और आप अभी भी अपने एक परिवार विशेष में जन्म अथवा उस परिवार और अपने जन्म से संबंधित धर्म तथा उसकी रीतियों के पालन के आधार पर अपने आप को प्रभु का जन समझ रहे हैं, तो आपको भी अपनी इस गलतफहमी से बाहर निकलकर परमेश्वर के वचन बाइबल की सच्चाई को स्वीकार करने और उसका पालन करने की आवश्यकता है। 

आज और अभी आपके पास अपनी अनन्तकाल की स्थिति को सुधारने का अवसर है; प्रभु यीशु से अपने पापों के लिए क्षमा माँगकर, स्वेच्छा से तथा सच्चे मन से अपने आप को उसकी अधीनता में समर्पित कर दीजिए - उद्धार और स्वर्गीय जीवन का यही एकमात्र मार्ग है। आपको स्वेच्छा और सच्चे मन से प्रभु यीशु मसीह से केवल एक छोटी प्रार्थना करनी है, और साथ ही अपना जीवन उसे पूर्णतः समर्पित करना है। आप यह प्रार्थना और समर्पण कुछ इस प्रकार से भी कर सकते हैं, “प्रभु यीशु मैं आपका धन्यवाद करता हूँ कि आपने मेरे पापों की क्षमा और समाधान के लिए उन पापों को अपने ऊपर लिया, उनके कारण मेरे स्थान पर क्रूस की मृत्यु सही, गाड़े गए, और मेरे उद्धार के लिए आप तीसरे दिन जी भी उठे, और आज जीवित प्रभु परमेश्वर हैं। कृपया मेरे पापों को क्षमा करें, मुझे अपनी शरण में लें, और मुझे अपना शिष्य बना लें। मैं अपना जीवन आप के हाथों में समर्पित करता हूँ।” सच्चे और समर्पित मन से की गई आपकी एक प्रार्थना आपके वर्तमान तथा भविष्य को, इस लोक के और परलोक के जीवन को, अनन्तकाल के लिए स्वर्गीय एवं आशीषित बना देगी।

The Characteristics of a Christian Believer

In the previous articles we have seen five things from the Book of Acts, the historical account of the activities of the first Church of the Bible, in which the saved, or Born-Again initial Christian Believers, continued steadfastly. We also saw that the things in which the Christian Believers continued steadfastly, have been turned into a formality, a ritual by the followers and adherents of the Christian religion, and have been taken, taught, and used like a mathematical equation, i.e., since Christian Believers do these things, therefore those who do these things will be considered as Christian Believers. The followers of this concept of having righteousness through religion-works-rituals, have created and added their own rules and ceremonies to these things, which have no support or affirmation from God’s Word. They have turned these five essential characteristics of a Christian Believer into religious formalities, expected and desirable in “Christians” instead of retaining them in their initial form of commandments of the Lord to be observed steadfastly, as was being done by the early Christian Believers. But just as the Lord Jesus, during His time of Ministry on earth, had said to the then religious leaders about their teaching and enforcing such man-made rules, regulations and rituals being a “vain worship”, “And in vain they worship Me, Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men” (Matthew 15:9), similarly, what the Lord had said at that time, is equally true and applicable to the current man-made rules, regulations, and traditions rampant today in Christendom. The Lord has said another thing about those who teach and preach and believe in these man-made rules, regulations, and traditions, and that too is equally applicable and important even today: “But He answered and said, "Every plant which My heavenly Father has not planted will be uprooted. Let them alone. They are blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind leads the blind, both will fall into a ditch” (Matthew 15:13-14).

In Acts chapter 2, we have the record of the first sermon preached by the apostle Peter, immediately after receiving and being empowered by God the Holy Spirit, to the “devout Jews” gathered in Jerusalem to celebrate their feasts and festivals. In response to this sermon, it is written that, “Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, "Men and brethren, what shall we do?” (Acts 2:37). And then Peter had replied, “Then Peter said to them, "Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call." And with many other words he testified and exhorted them, saying, "Be saved from this perverse generation” (Acts 2:38-40). Here we see three things that Peter, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, tells them to do: “Repent”, “be baptized”, “Be saved from this perverse generation”. In accordance with the sequence given here, to become a disciple of the Lord Jesus, or a Christian Believer, the first step is that the person should repent of his sins, i.e., confess his sins and turn away from them, leave those sinful things behind. This is to be followed by the next step, to express this change by witnessing through baptism, and then is the practical demonstration of this changed life by separating from the people who can pull back into the evils and systems of the world, to change one’s fellowship as well - Be saved from this perverse generation.

Those who become Christian Believers, they continue steadfastly in the four things of Acts 2:42, which we have already seen. So, from this passage, we have seven characteristics of a saved, Born-Again Christian Believer:

1. Decides to repent of his sins voluntarily and willingly.

2. Witnesses about his changed life through water Baptism.

3. Changes his fellowship and company for his spiritual growth and security, i.e., separates himself from his former fellowship and company which can pull him back into evil.

Then, for his growth in his spiritual and Christian life, in nearness to the Lord God, he,

4. Continually keeps learning God’s Word

5. Continues in fellowship with Christian Believers

6. Regularly participates in the Lord’s Table or Holy Communion in the manner given in God’s Word.

7. Leads a life of prayer.

From the above it is evident that the life of Christian faith is not a life of following a religion, i.e., of fulfilling religious formalities, but of accepting and living a life of being an obedient and committed disciple of Christ Jesus. Also, being a Christian Believer or a disciple of Lord Jesus is not a matter of converting from one religion to another, but of converting the heart and mind and practically living out this changed life. If you are still thinking of yourself as being a Christian, because of being born in a particular family and having fulfilled the religious rites and rituals prescribed under your religion or denomination since your childhood, then you too need to come out of your misunderstanding of Biblical facts and start understanding and living according to what the Word of God says, instead of what any denominational creed says or teaches.

If you are still not Born Again, have not obtained salvation, or have not asked the Lord Jesus for forgiveness for your sins, then you have the opportunity to do so right now. A short prayer said voluntarily with a sincere heart, with heartfelt repentance for your sins, and a fully submissive attitude, “Lord Jesus, I confess that I have disobeyed You, and have knowingly or unknowingly, in mind, in thought, in attitude, and in deeds, committed sins. I believe that you have fully borne the punishment of my sins by your sacrifice on the cross, and have paid the full price of those sins for all eternity. Please forgive my sins, change my heart and mind towards you, and make me your disciple, take me with you." God longs for your company and wants to see you blessed, but to make this possible, is your personal decision. Will you not say this prayer now, while you have the time and opportunity to do so - the decision is yours.

बपतिस्मा और मसीही विश्वास

पिछले लेखों में हमने देखा कि मसीही विश्वास के स्थान पर मसीही या ईसाई धर्म का निर्वाह करने वाले प्रेरितों 2:42 में दी गई मसीही विश्वासियों के लिए ‘लौलीन’ रहने वाली चार बातों (वचन की शिक्षा पाना, संगति रखना, प्रभु-भोज में सम्मिलित होना, प्रार्थना करना) को उद्धार या नया जन्म प्राप्त कर लेने के लिए गणित के एक समीकरण के समान, एक रस्म के समान मानते तथा मनाते हैं। वे इन चारों बातों के वास्तविक महत्व को समझने और उसके आधार पर प्रभु की आज्ञाकारिता में उनका निर्वाह करने की बजाए, एक रीति के समान इनकी औपचारिकता को पूरा करने के द्वारा समझते हैं कि वे भी नया जन्म या उद्धार पाए हुए लोग हैं। किन्तु बाइबल की शिक्षाओं के अनुसार उनका यह मान्यता रखना एक सर्वथा गलत धारणा ही है, तथा धर्म-कर्म-रस्म के निर्वाह द्वारा प्रभु परमेश्वर की दृष्टि में स्वीकार्य होने के लिए उनका एक व्यर्थ एवं निष्फल प्रयास हैं। पिछले लेखों में हम प्रेरितों 2:42 की चारों बातों के औपचारिक निर्वाह के बारे में देख चुके हैं। आज हम प्रेरितों 2 अध्याय में स्थापित हुई पहली मण्डली के लोगों के साथ तब जुड़ी, और आज मसीही विश्वासियों तथा ईसाई धर्म-समाज के साथ भी घनिष्ठता से जुड़ी एक और बात के बारे में कुछ और विस्तार से देखेंगे, जिसे भी गणित के समीकरण के समान लेकर, उसके विषय भी गलत धारणा बना ली गई है, और उसे मनुष्यों द्वारा दिए गए भिन्न स्वरूपों में बड़ी निष्ठा से निभाया भी जाता है, बिना यह देखे और विचारे कि बाइबल में उसके बारे में क्या कुछ लिखा और सिखाया गया है। यह पाँचवीं बात है बपतिस्मा।

5. बपतिस्मा: प्रभु यीशु मसीह और बाइबल की शिक्षा है कि जो प्रभु यीशु मसीह का शिष्य बने उसे ही बपतिस्मा दिया जाए “इसलिये तुम जा कर सब जातियों के लोगों को चेला बनाओ और उन्हें पिता और पुत्र और पवित्रआत्मा के नाम से बपतिस्मा दो” (मत्ती 28:19)। अर्थात बपतिस्मा उनके लिए है जो प्रभु यीशु का शिष्य बनना स्वीकार करता है, जो अपने इस मसीही विश्वास के द्वारा प्रभु का जन बन जाता है। इस आयत से यह बिल्कुल स्पष्ट है कि बपतिस्मा किसी को प्रभु यीशु का अनुयायी नहीं बनाता है; वरन वो जो प्रभु यीशु का अनुयायी बनने का निर्णय ले लेते हैं, उन्हें प्रभु यीशु के प्रति आज्ञाकारिता के अन्तर्गत, बपतिस्मा लेना चाहिए, और यही बात बाइबल के अन्य हवालों से भी प्रकट है।

जब हम यूहन्ना बपतिस्मा देने वाले के द्वारा पहले दिए जा रहे बपतिस्मे के बारे में देखते हैं, और फिर बाद में प्रभु यीशु की उपरोक्त आज्ञाकारिता में उनके शिष्यों के द्वारा दिए जाने वाले बपतिस्मे के बारे में देखते हैं, तो यह प्रकट है कि बाइबल में तो बपतिस्मा केवल उन्हें ही दिया गया जो पापों के लिए पश्चाताप और प्रभु के प्रति सच्चे समर्पण के साथ बपतिस्मा लेने के उद्देश्य से स्वेच्छा से आए। यूहन्ना बपतिस्मा देने वाले ने अपनी सेवकाई का आरंभ मन फिराव के आह्वान के साथ किया (मत्ती 3:2); और यही प्रभु यीशु ने भी किया (मरकुस 1:15)। यूहन्ना बपतिस्मा देने वाले के प्रचार को मानकर जो लोग अपने पापों का अंगीकार करते थे, वह केवल उन्हें ही बपतिस्मा देता था (मत्ती 3:5, 6); किन्तु जब कपटी फरीसी और सदूकी, पाखण्ड में होकर उससे बपतिस्मा लेने के लिए आए, तो उसने उनकी भर्त्सना की और पहले मन फिराने के लिए कहा (मत्ती 3:7-8)। यूहन्ना बपतिस्मा देने वाले ने स्पष्ट कहा कि वह “मन फिराव का बपतिस्मा” देता था (मत्ती 3:11)। यूहन्ना किसी को बपतिस्मा देने के लिए उनके पास नहीं जाता था; लोग स्वतः बपतिस्मा लेने के लिए यूहन्ना के पास आते थे।

प्रभु यीशु मसीह ने भी अपने शिष्यों से उन्हें ही बपतिस्मा देने के लिए कहा जो उसके पास आ चुके थे, पहले स्वेच्छा से उसके शिष्य बनना स्वीकार कर चुके थे (मत्ती 28:19-20)। हम पहले देख चुके हैं कि प्रभु यीशु का शिष्य बनने के लिए व्यक्ति को पहले अपने पापों से पश्चाताप करना अनिवार्य है। अर्थात प्रभु यीशु द्वारा दिए गए बपतिस्मा देने और लेने के निर्देश में पहले व्यक्ति द्वारा पश्चाताप करना अनिवार्यतः निहित है। यही बात, अपने आप में, शिशुओं या बच्चों के, तथा चर्च की रीति पूरी करने के लिए बपतिस्मा देने या लेने को निषेध कर देती है। 

संपूर्ण बाइबल में कहीं भी किसी शिशु अथवा बच्चे को बपतिस्मा देने का कोई उदाहरण नहीं है; जिनका भी बपतिस्मा होने के उदाहरण हैं वे सभी वयस्क थे और उन्होंने स्वेच्छा से पापों से पश्चाताप करने के पश्चात ही बपतिस्मा लिया। साथ ही जहां कहीं भी बपतिस्मा दिए जाने का उल्लेख है, वहाँ यह भी स्पष्ट संकेत है कि वह पानी के छिड़काव या माथे पर पानी से कोई चिह्न बना देने के द्वारा नहीं, वरन किसी नदी या बहुत जल के स्थान पर पानी के अंदर उतर कर, फिर पानी में से बाहर आने, अर्थात डुबकी के द्वारा दिया गया बपतिस्मा था (मत्ती 3:16; यूहन्ना 1:28; 3:23; प्रेरितों 8:36-39)। और न ही बाइबल में किसी दृढ़ीकरण या confirmation की कोई बात, आवश्यकता, अथवा विधि दी गई है। 

किन्तु इस “समीकरण” वाली धारणा के अधीन, लोग सामान्यतः यही मान लेते हैं कि किसी भी आयु में, किसी भी प्रकार का “बपतिस्मा” लेने से वे मसीह के जन, उसके शिष्य, और उद्धार या नया जन्म पाए हुए व्यक्ति बन जाते हैं; जो कदापि सत्य नहीं है, बाइबल और प्रभु यीशु की शिक्षा नहीं है। बपतिस्मा न तो नया जन्म देता है, न उद्धार और पापों की क्षमा देता है, और न ही प्रभु यीशु का शिष्य बनाता है। प्रत्येक चर्च अथवा मण्डली में ऐसे कितने ही लोग मिल जाएंगे, जिन्होंने एक रस्म या रीति के तौर पर बपतिस्मा तो लिया और उससे संबंधित विधि-विधान तो पूरे किए, किन्तु सच्चे मन से पापों से पश्चाताप नहीं किया, न ही प्रभु यीशु मसीह को अपना उद्धारकर्ता ग्रहण किया। उनके जीवन, आदतें, बोल-चाल, व्यवहार, आदि सभी कुछ दिखा देते हैं कि वे वास्तव में उद्धार पाए हुए नहीं हैं। उनके बपतिस्मे ने उनका जीवन नहीं बदला; वे अभी भी अपने पापों ही में जी रहे हैं। उद्धार या नया जन्म पाए हुए व्यक्ति के लिए बपतिस्मा प्रभु का निर्देश है; किन्तु हर बपतिस्मा पाया हुआ व्यक्ति उद्धार पाया हुआ और प्रभु का जन नहीं होता है - मनुष्यों द्वारा गढ़ी और लागू की गई इस गलत धारणा की बाइबल में कहीं कोई समर्थन अथवा पुष्टि नहीं है।

आज मसीही विश्वास के स्थान पर ईसाई धर्म को मानने और मनाने वाले लोग बड़ी निष्ठा और लगन से किन्तु गलत धारणा और विचारधारा के साथ प्रभु भोज और बपतिस्मे में सम्मिलित तो होते हैं, किन्तु यह नहीं जानते और समझते हैं कि यदि उन्होंने पापों से पश्चाताप नहीं किया है, प्रभु यीशु को स्वेच्छा से अपना उद्धारकर्ता ग्रहण नहीं किया है, सच्चे मन से उसके शिष्य नहीं बने हैं, तो यह सब उनके लिए व्यर्थ और निष्फल है; वे अभी भी अपने पापों में पड़े हुए हैं और अनन्त विनाश के मार्ग पर ही अग्रसर हैं। इसलिए यदि आपने अभी तक अपने आप को प्रभु यीशु मसीह की शिष्यता में समर्पित नहीं किया है, और आप अभी भी अपने एक परिवार विशेष में जन्म अथवा उस परिवार और अपने जन्म से संबंधित धर्म तथा उसकी रीतियों के पालन के आधार पर अपने आप को प्रभु का जन समझ रहे हैं, तो आपको भी अपनी इस गलतफहमी से बाहर निकलकर परमेश्वर के वचन बाइबल की सच्चाई को स्वीकार करने और उसका पालन करने की आवश्यकता है।

Baptism and the Christian Faith

In the previous articles we have been seeing that those who believe in and follow the Christian religion instead of the Christian faith, use the four integral things in a Born-Again Christian Believer’s life, related to the Christian faith, and mentioned in Acts 2:42 (Bible study, Fellowship, Lord’s Table, Prayer), like a mathematical equation, to consider themselves as being saved or Born-Again. Instead of understanding the actual meaning and significance of these things, and then observing them as an act of obedience to the Lord, the followers of the Christian religion observe these four things ritualistically, to fulfill religious formality, and then think themselves to be saved as well. This is a misunderstanding, a wrong notion on their part, and does not reconcile them with God, since it is similar to the notion of salvation by works, i.e., through observance of religion-good works-rituals and ceremonies etc. In our study on the significance and observance of these four things of Acts 2:42, we have seen about their ritualistic and formal observance; today we look at another important thing - Baptism. Those who follow the Christian religion often misunderstand and practice baptism ritualistically and in various inappropriate forms and ways, again like a mathematical equation, without learning from the Bible what all has been written and taught about it, by.

5. Baptism: It is the Lord’s teaching and a teaching of the Bible, that only those who voluntarily and willingly decide to become the disciples of the Lord Jesus, should be baptized, “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” (Matthew 28:19); i.e., baptism is to be given to those who decide to become the Lord’s people, who come into the Christian faith. This verse makes it very clear that baptism does not make one a disciple of Lord Jesus; rather those who decide to become the disciples of the Lord Jesus, they are to get baptized as an act of obedience to the Lord Jesus, and this is evident from the other related Biblical references as well.

When we see about the baptism that John the Baptist was administering, and then later on, the baptism administered by the disciples of the Lord Jesus, then it is quite clear that baptism was given to only those who repented of sins and came forth to be baptized with a complete surrender and submission to the Lord. John the Baptist began his ministry with the call to repent of sins (Matthew 3:2), and so did the Lord Jesus (Mark 1:15). John the Baptist baptized only those who believed in his preaching and teachings and repented of their sins (Matthew 3:5-6). It is to be noted here that when the hypocritical Pharisees and Sadducees, came to him for baptism in their hypocrisy, he denounced them, and asked them to first repent and only then come (Matthew 3:7-8). John the Baptist stated it very clearly that he baptized with a baptism of repentance (Matthew 3:11). John never went out to baptize anyone; it was the people who came to him for this. 

Lord Jesus also told His disciples to baptize only those who would come to Him, i.e., first willingly decide to become His disciples (Matthew 28:19-20), and as we have seen earlier, this is only possible by repenting of sins. Hence, in the Lord Jesus’s commandment about taking and giving of baptism, the absolute necessity of repentance is definitely inherent. This one fact by itself very obviously reveals the un-Biblical nature and vanity of the practice of infant or child baptism, and also of baptism being administered ritualistically as a denominational requirement, and firmly negates these practices.

Throughout the Bible, there is no instance or example of any infant or child baptism being given by anyone; all those who have been baptized in the Bible have been adults, and they were all baptized only after voluntarily and willingly repenting of their sins. Also, wherever baptism is mentioned in the Bible, it has been clearly indicated that it was never given by dipping a finger in water and making the mark of the cross on the forehead, or by sprinkling of water; it was always done in a river or stream, or place of enough water into which one could enter in and then then come up from the water, i.e., it was a baptism by immersion in water (Matthew 3:16; John 1:28; 3:23; Acts 8:36-39). Nor is there any instruction or teaching anywhere in the Bible about the practice of “Confirmation” so commonly practiced by the followers of the Christian religion in many denominational Churches.

But those acting under and following the concept of it functioning like a mathematical equation, trust that by “baptizing” a person in some manner, irrespective of the age or method, the “baptism” makes the person into a follower of the Lord, His disciple, and one who is saved or Born-Again - which has never ever been the teaching of the Lord or the Bible. Baptism neither saves, nor makes a person Born-Again, nor provides forgiveness of sins, nor does it make a person a disciple of the Lord Jesus Christ. In every Church and Assembly, there are any number of people who have taken baptism to fulfill a ritual or denominational requirement, have fulfilled all the related practices and ceremonies, but have never ever truly repented of their sins nor ever accepted the Lord Jesus as their personal savior. Their lives, habits, speech, behavior, etc., everything makes it evident that they are not actually saved. Their getting baptized never changed their lives; they are still living in their sins, just as they were before being baptized. For those saved or Born-Again, to be baptized is a commandment of the Lord Jesus; but not every baptized person becomes a saved or Born-Again person. There is no support or affirmation in God’s Word the Bible of this man-made, contrived and wrong doctrine.

Today, the followers of the Christian religion, very sincerely, enthusiastically and religiously, but with a wrong notion and complete misunderstanding, participate in the Holy Communion and take baptism, but they do not know or understand that if they have not repented of their sins, and have not willingly accepted the Lord Jesus as their savior, have not submitted their lives to Him, they actually are not the disciples of the Lord and doing all this is vain and fruitless for them; they are still in their sins and are heading towards eternal destruction in their sins. If you are still thinking of yourself as being a Christian, because of being born in a particular family and having fulfilled the religious rites and rituals prescribed under your religion or denomination since your childhood, then you too need to come out of your misunderstanding of Biblical facts and start understanding and living according to what the Word of God says, instead of what any denominational creed says or teaches.

If you are still not Born Again, have not obtained salvation, or have not asked the Lord Jesus for forgiveness for your sins, then you have the opportunity to do so right now. A short prayer said voluntarily with a sincere heart, with heartfelt repentance for your sins, and a fully submissive attitude, “Lord Jesus, I confess that I have disobeyed You, and have knowingly or unknowingly, in mind, in thought, in attitude, and in deeds, committed sins. I believe that you have fully borne the punishment of my sins by your sacrifice on the cross, and have paid the full price of those sins for all eternity. Please forgive my sins, change my heart and mind towards you, and make me your disciple, take me with you." God longs for your company and wants to see you blessed, but to make this possible, is your personal decision. Will you not say this prayer now, while you have the time and opportunity to do so - the decision is yours.

3. संगति रखना: आरंभिक मसीही विश्वासी जिन बातों में प्रेरितों 2:42 के अनुसार ‘लौलीन’ रहते थे, उनमें से एक परस्पर संगति रखना भी था। इसी 42 पद के बाद, पद 44 से 46 में, उस आरंभिक मण्डली में इस संगति रखने के अर्थ को सजीव उदाहरण से बताया गया है। उनके लिए लिखा गया है, “और वे सब विश्वास करने वाले इकट्ठे रहते थे, और उन की सब वस्तुएं साझे की थीं। और वे अपनी अपनी सम्पत्ति और सामान बेच बेचकर जैसी जिस की आवश्यकता होती थी बांट दिया करते थे। और वे प्रति दिन एक मन हो कर मन्दिर में इकट्ठे होते थे, और घर घर रोटी तोड़ते हुए आनन्द और मन की सिधाई से भोजन किया करते थे” (प्रेरितों 2:44-46)। यद्यपि इसके बाद यह बात फिर कभी किसी अन्य मण्डली में न देखने को मिली, और न ही इसका उदाहरण बनाकर कभी कहीं कोई शिक्षा दी गई, न ऐसा करते रहने के लिए कभी कहा गया; किन्तु उन लोगों की संगति एक घनिष्ठ आत्मीयता, परस्पर प्रेम के साथ परिवार के समान रहने की बात थी। मण्डली या चर्च के लोगों का परस्पर संगति रखने का महत्व एक-दूसरे से सीखने, एक-दूसरे की आत्मिक और साँसारिक स्थिति तथा परिस्थितियों से अवगत होने और एक-दूसरे के लिए समय और परिस्थिति के अनुसार सहायक होने, एक-दूसरे के लिए प्रार्थना करने, आदि के लिए तब भी था और आज भी है।

हम पौलुस की पत्रियों से देखते हैं कि वह उन मसीही विश्वासियों के लिए भी प्रभु में आनंदित होता था और उनके लिए प्रार्थनाएँ करता था, जिनसे वह कभी मिला भी नहीं था बस उनके बारे में सुना ही था (कुलुससियों 1:3, 4, 9)। इसी प्रकार से यरूशलेम में स्थित आरंभिक कलीसिया के अगुवों ने जब इस्राएल के क्षेत्र से बाहर अन्य-जातियों के मध्य पौलुस की सेवकाई के बारे में जाना, तो उन्होंने भी उसकी सेवकाई को अपनी सेवकाई के समान स्वीकार किया और उसका अनुमोदन एवं समर्थन किया (गलातियों 2:7-10)। हम परस्पर मेल-मिलाप और आदर के बारे में एक और बहुत महत्वपूर्ण बात भी देखते हैं, पौलुस ने पतरस का उसकी गलती के लिए उसके मुँह पर सामना किया (गलातियों 2:11-14); किन्तु इससे पतरस और पौलुस में विरोध या टकराव अथवा विभाजन उत्पन्न नहीं हुआ, वरन बाद में पतरस अपनी पत्री में पौलुस की और उसके मसीही ज्ञान की सराहना करता है, उसे प्रिय भाई कहकर संबोधित करता है (2 पतरस 3:15-16)। मसीही विश्वासियों की इस व्यावहारिक एक-मनता के सामने आज के मसीहियों की औपचारिक परस्पर संगति और एक-दूसरे की देख-भाल कितनी फीकी और छिछली, तथा पाखण्ड के समान है।

इन अंत के दिनों के लिए, जिनमें हम रह रहे हैं, परस्पर संगति रखने के संबंध में बाइबल की शिक्षा है “और प्रेम, और भले कामों में उकसाने के लिये एक दूसरे की चिन्‍ता किया करें। और एक दूसरे के साथ इकट्ठा होना ने छोड़ें, जैसे कि कितनों की रीति है, पर एक दूसरे को समझाते रहें; और ज्यों ज्यों उस दिन को निकट आते देखो, त्यों त्यों और भी अधिक यह किया करो” (इब्रानियों 10:24-25)। किन्तु चर्च अथवा मण्डलियों में आज अपने समूह के अतिरिक्त अन्य समूहों के मसीही लोगों से मिलने, उनसे संगति रखने, उनके साथ प्रार्थना करने अथवा वचन के अध्ययन में सम्मिलित होने को मना किया जाता है, रोका जाता है। आरंभिक मसीही मण्डलियों के लोग परस्पर मिलने और संपर्क रखने तथा जुड़ने के लिए लालायित रहते थे; आज के मसीही एक दूसरे से पृथक रहने और दूरी बनाने के अवसर और तरीके ढूंढते हैं। बस अपनी ही मण्डली अथवा चर्च में इतवार के दिन की एक औपचारिक संगति को ही पर्याप्त और उचित मान तथा बता कर इस संगति रखने बात के निर्वाह को सही और पूर्ण समझ लिया जाता है; गणित के समीकरण के समान, संगति रख ली इसलिए मसीही विश्वासी हैं समझ लिया जाता है।

Significance of Fellowship in the Christian Faith

In the last article we have seen that those who believe in and follow the Christian religion instead of the Christian faith, use the four integral things in a Born-Again Christian Believer’s life, related to the Christian faith, and mentioned in Acts 2:42 (Bible study, Fellowship, Lord’s Table, Prayer), like a mathematical equation, to consider themselves as being saved or Born-Again. The followers of the Christian religion observe these four things ritualistically, to fulfill religious formality, and then think themselves to be saved as well. But the desire to take these things seriously, understand their significance, and observe them to grow in the Christian life is missing in them. This is a misunderstanding, a wrong notion on their part, and does not reconcile them with God, since it is similar to the notion of salvation by works, i.e., through observance of religion-good works-rituals and ceremonies etc. In our study on the significance and observance of these four things of Acts 2:42, we had seen two, Bible study and Prayers, in some detail in the previous article, and of the remaining two we will be considering one in this article, and the fourth one in the next article.

3. Fellowship: According to Acts 2:42 one of the things that the initial Christian Believers continued steadfastly was Fellowship. In the subsequent verses, i.e., Acts 2:44-46, the meaning of their continuing in fellowship has been practically explained. It is written there, “Now all who believed were together, and had all things in common, and sold their possessions and goods, and divided them among all, as anyone had need. So, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart” (Acts 2:44-46). Although, it is important to note here that, this deeply connected and intimate fellowship was never seen again in any Church or Assembly of the Christian Believers; nor was this ever used as a precedence to instruct others, nor was any instruction for having such a fellowship ever given in any of the books of the New Testament. Nevertheless, we see from their example that the fellowship of those first converts, the members of that first Christian Assembly, was of a close-knit family, living together in love and mutual trust. The importance of fellowship in the Church, then and now, is to promote learning from one-another’s experiences, to be aware of each other’s worldly and spiritual state, situation, and needs, be of help to each other whenever required, wherever possible, and to pray for each other according to mutual needs and necessities.

We see from the letters of Paul, that he used to be joyful and praying for even those Churches and Christian Believers whom he had never met, but had only heard of (Colossians 1:3, 4, 9). Similarly, when the Elders of the Church in Jerusalem learned of Paul’s ministry outside of Israel, amongst the Gentiles, then they too accepted his ministry as similar to their own, affirmed and supported it (Galatians 2:1-10). In this mutual meeting together, sharing and acknowledging each other’s ministry, we also see one very important thing - Paul spoke directly to Peter, on his face, about something wrong being done by Peter in the fear of men (Galatians 2:11-14). But this did not produce any bitterness or ego problems between them, or amongst the members of their Assemblies; there was no division or fragmentation in the Church because of this. Rather, we later see Peter praising Paul for his wisdom, and addresses him as ‘our beloved brother.’ In comparison to this practically demonstrated spiritual unity, how shallow and pale is the mutual fellowship shown by the Christian Believers now-a-days; it seems more like a hypocrisy.

For these end-times, in which we are living, the teaching of the Bible about being in fellowship is, “And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching” (Hebrews 10:24-25). In stark contrast, in the Churches or in the Assemblies, these days, people and elders try to stop their members meeting and fellowshipping with members of other Churches or Assemblies; they forbid and stop their members from participating in prayer meetings or Bible studies with people of other Assemblies or Churches. The people of the initial Churches and Assemblies used to have a zeal to meet, share, and remain in contact with people from other Assemblies and Churches; but today’s Christian Believers look for ways and excuses to remain separated from others, to avoid fellowship with others. Today, the Christians indulge in a little time of meeting together on Sundays, after the worship service with members of their own congregation, more often for socializing and exchanging gossip and other ‘news’, and consider this as “fellowship”, and then, like the mathematical equation, it is taken for granted that the fulfilling of this formality has qualified them to be Christian Believers.

From the teachings of the Word of God, in the coming articles we will look at participating in the Lord’s Table, and Baptism, which are often done with a great fervor, but also with a wrong attitude. But, if you are still thinking of yourself as being a Christian, because of being born in a particular family and having fulfilled the religious rites and rituals prescribed under your religion or denomination since your childhood, then you too need to come out of your misunderstanding of Biblical facts and start understanding and living according to what the Word of God says, instead of what any denominational creed says or teaches.

कल हमने मसीही विश्वास के स्थान पर मसीही धर्म या ईसाई धर्म के मानने वालों तथा उस धर्म की बातों को पूरा करने वालों में विद्यमान एक धारणा के बारे में देखा था - परमेश्वर को स्वीकार्य होने के लिए गणित के एक समीकरण के समान धारणा रखना। इस “समीकरण” वाली धारणा रखने वाले लोग यह विचार रखते हैं कि यदि कोई प्रभाव जीवन में कुछ गुण लाता है, तो फिर किसी के जीवन में उन गुणों का होना इस बात का प्रमाण है कि वे उस प्रभाव के कारण ही हैं। जबकि यह सत्य नहीं है। इसे यदि एक बहुत सहज और सामान्य उदाहरण से समझें, दूध एक सफेद तरल पदार्थ है; किन्तु हम भली-भांति जानते हैं कि हर सफेद तरल पदार्थ न तो दूध होता है और न दूध के समान प्रयोग किया जा सकता है; और साथ ही यह भी जानते हैं कि दूध के समान दिखने वाले “नकली दूध” भी बाजार में मिल जाते हैं, किन्तु वे हानिकारक होते हैं, दूध के समान पौष्टिक भोजन वस्तु नहीं होते। ऐसा नहीं है कि मसीही या ईसाई धर्म में आस्था रखने वाले परमेश्वर से प्रेम नहीं करते, या प्रभु परमेश्वर के विरुद्ध हैं; वास्तविकता तो यही है कि वे भी अपनी ही रीति और विधि के अंतर्गत प्रभु परमेश्वर को चाहते हैं, उसे पूरा आदर और जीवन में उच्च स्थान देना चाहते हैं, किन्तु उनका यह प्रयास परमेश्वर के वचन से संगत नहीं है, इसलिए अपूर्ण और निष्फल है। इन लोगों के लिए पौलुस प्रेरित द्वारा पवित्र आत्मा की अगुवाई में भक्त इस्राएलियों के लिए लिखी गई बात पूरी होती है, “हे भाइयो, मेरे मन की अभिलाषा और उन के लिये परमेश्वर से मेरी प्रार्थना है, कि वे उद्धार पाएं। क्योंकि मैं उन की गवाही देता हूं, कि उन को परमेश्वर के लिये धुन रहती है, परन्तु बुद्धिमानी के साथ नहीं। क्योंकि वे परमेश्वर की धामिर्कता से अनजान हो कर, और अपनी धामिर्कता स्थापन करने का यत्न कर के, परमेश्वर की धामिर्कता के आधीन न हुए” (रोमियों 10:1-3)।

अपनी इसी धर्म-कर्म-रस्म के निर्वाह की धार्मिकता की धारणा के अंतर्गत, वे यही मानते हैं कि कुछ विधि-विधान पूरे कर देने, कुछ त्यौहारों, विशेष दिनों, और रस्मों को निभा लेने, और मसीही विश्वासियों के समान कुछ बातों का पालन कर लेने से वे भी मसीही विश्वासी ही हो जाते हैं। पतरस प्रेरित ने पवित्र आत्मा की सामर्थ्य प्राप्त करने के बाद जब यरूशलेम में एकत्रित भक्त यहूदियों के सामने पहला सुसमाचार प्रचार किया (प्रेरितों 2 अध्याय) तो उन यहूदियों में से लगभग 3000 ने प्रभु यीशु मसीह को अपना उद्धारकर्ता ग्रहण किया और प्रभु के शिष्यों के समूह में सम्मिलित हो गए (पद 41)। यही प्रथम कलीसिया, या चर्च अथवा मण्डली का आरंभ था। इससे अगला पद (पद 42) बताता है कि इस प्रथम मण्डली के लोग चार बातों में ‘लौलीन रहते थे’, “और वे प्रेरितों से शिक्षा पाने [परमेश्वर के वचन के अध्ययन और शिक्षा], और संगति रखने [विश्वासी लोगों के साथ एकत्रित होते रहने] में और रोटी तोड़ने [प्रभु भोज में भाग लेते रहने] में और प्रार्थना करने [साथ मिलकर परमेश्वर से संगति और निवेदन करने] में लौलीन रहे।” अब इन्हीं चार बातों का पालन मसीही या ईसाई धर्म के लोग भी करते हैं, किन्तु न तो वे इनमें लौलीन रहते हैं, और न ही उस प्रकार से करते हैं जिस प्रकार से वचन में सिखाया और दिखाया गया है, वरन धर्म का पालन करने वाले अधिकांश लोगों के लिए ये चारों बातें कुछ निर्धारित दिनों में एक रस्म के समान निभाने के लिए हैं, जिनका निर्वाह करके वे मानते हैं कि उन्होंने भी मसीही विश्वासियों के समान वचन की शिक्षा को पूरा कर लिया है, इसलिए वे भी मसीही विश्वासियों से भिन्न नहीं हैं। किन्तु वो इस आधारभूत तथ्य की अनदेखी कर बैठते हैं कि मसीही विश्वासी पहले स्वेच्छा और सच्चे मन से अपने पापों से पश्चाताप करता है, प्रभु यीशु से उनके लिए क्षमा माँगता है, अपना जीवन प्रभु यीशु को समर्पित करके उनका शिष्य बनता है, और फिर प्रभु की अगुवाई में, प्रभु के सिखाए, वह इन बातों में ‘लौलीन’ रहता है, इनका पालन करके इनके दर्शनों में बढ़ता और मसीही जीवन में परिपक्व होता जाता है।

साथ ही यहाँ पर ध्यान देने योग्य एक अन्य बहुत महत्वपूर्ण बात यह भी है कि परमेश्वर के वचन बाइबल में कही पर भी ऐसा कोई उल्लेख अथवा संकेत भी नहीं है कि प्रेरितों 2:42 में दी गई चार बातों के अतिरिक्त, आज मसीही धर्म का पालन करने वालों में जिन रीति-रिवाज़ों, त्यौहारों, परम्पराओं आदि को इतने महत्व और उत्साह के साथ माना, मनाया, और निभाया जाता है; जो बातें आज मसीहियत की पहचान बन गई हैं, उनका उन आरम्भिक मसीही विश्वासियों द्वारा कभी पालन किया गया हो, या उन्होंने उन बातों को कभी कोई महत्व दिया हो। यदि मसीहियत के इतिहास के आधार पर देखें, तो ये सभी बातें, त्यौहार, और रीतियाँ, मसीहियत में लगभग चौथी शताब्दी में उन लोगों के द्वारा लाई गईं जिनका वास्तव में उद्धार नहीं हुआ था। ये लोग अपने पूर्व-धर्म और मान्यताओं को अब एक "मसीही" नाम और स्वरूप देकर मानने और मनाने लगे, और मसीही विश्वास बिगड़ कर अब उन लोगों द्वारा गढ़े गए और माने जाने वाले ईसाई धर्म में परिवर्तित हो गया। इसी ईसाई धर्म के प्रचार और प्रसार के साथ, उन लोगों के द्वारा लाई गईं और मनाई जाने वाली ये बातें, त्यौहार, और रीतियाँ भी दृढ़ता से मानी और मनाई जाने लगीं। बाइबल में ईसाई धर्म की इन बातों, त्यौहारों, और रीतियों का न तो कोई उल्लेख है, और न ही उनके निर्वाह के बारे में कोई शिक्षा अथवा निर्देश दिए गए हैं। 

यह भी ध्यान देने योग्य बात है कि जब मसीही विश्वास के आरम्भ से लगभग चौथी शताब्दी तक, मसीही विश्वासी, बिना इन बातों, त्यौहारों, रीतियों को मनाए, परमेश्वर को प्रसन्न करते आए थे, परमेश्वर के लोग बनकर रहते चले आए थे, तो फिर अब इन बातों, त्यौहारों, और रीतियों की, और वे भी परमेश्वर के द्वारा दी गई नहीं, बल्कि अन्य धर्मों से लाई गई और मनुष्यों द्वारा गढ़ी गई बातों की, क्या आवश्यकता आ पड़ी, उन्हें क्यों इतना महत्व मिलने लग गया? साथ ही, आज ईसाई धर्म से संबंधित उन बातों, त्यौहारों, और रीतियों का जो स्वरूप और उपयोग हो गया है, वह उनके उस मूल स्वरूप और उपयोग से भिन्न नहीं है जो उन्हें मसीहियत में लाए जाने से पहले उनका हुआ करता था। ये बातें न तब परमेश्वर को प्रसन्न करती थीं, और न ही आज करती हैं; उन्हें मानने और मनाने वाले चाहे जितने भी उत्साह, श्रद्धा, और भक्ति से उन्हें क्यों न मनाएं। थोड़ा सा थम कर विचार कीजिए, क्या इस सृष्टि का सृष्टिकर्ता, हमारा जीवता सच्चा परमेश्वर, अपनी आराधना और उपासना के लिए काल्पनिक, विधर्मी, पराए देवी-देवताओं की और मनुष्यों द्वारा गढ़ी गई रीतियों का मोहताज हो सकता है? क्या वे विधियाँ और रीतियाँ, वास्तव में उसे प्रसन्न करेंगी, उसे स्वीकार होंगी? जब उसने अपने वचन में "सब कुछ जो जीवन और भक्ति से सम्बन्ध रखता है" पहले से ही दे दिया है (2 पतरस 1:3); तो क्या वह मनुष्यों द्वारा उसके मूल वचन और खरी बातों का तिरस्कार कर, बाहरी बातों द्वारा उसके वचन में की जाने वाली इस मिलावट, इस फेर-बदल को कोई मान्यता देगा; उसे ग्रहण और आशीषित करेगा?

आरम्भिक मसीही विश्वासियों द्वारा पालन की जाने वाली बातों से संबंधित परमेश्वर के वचन बाइबल की कुछ शिक्षाओं को हम आगे आने वाले लेखों में देखेंगे। किन्तु यदि आपने अभी तक अपने आप को प्रभु यीशु मसीह की शिष्यता में समर्पित नहीं किया है, और आप अभी भी अपने जन्म अथवा संबंधित धर्म तथा उसकी रीतियों के पालन के आधार पर अपने आप को प्रभु का जन समझ रहे हैं, तो आपको भी अपनी इस गलतफहमी से बाहर निकलकर सच्चाई को स्वीकार करने और उसका पालन करने की आवश्यकता है। 

आज और अभी आपके पास अपनी अनन्तकाल की स्थिति को सुधारने का अवसर है; प्रभु यीशु से अपने पापों के लिए क्षमा माँगकर, स्वेच्छा से तथा सच्चे मन से अपने आप को उसकी अधीनता में समर्पित कर दीजिए - उद्धार और स्वर्गीय जीवन का यही एकमात्र मार्ग है। आपको स्वेच्छा और सच्चे मन से प्रभु यीशु मसीह से केवल एक छोटी प्रार्थना करनी है, और साथ ही अपना जीवन उसे पूर्णतः समर्पित करना है। आप यह प्रार्थना और समर्पण कुछ इस प्रकार से भी कर सकते हैं, “प्रभु यीशु मैं आपका धन्यवाद करता हूँ कि आपने मेरे पापों की क्षमा और समाधान के लिए उन पापों को अपने ऊपर लिया, उनके कारण मेरे स्थान पर क्रूस की मृत्यु सही, गाड़े गए, और मेरे उद्धार के लिए आप तीसरे दिन जी भी उठे, और आज जीवित प्रभु परमेश्वर हैं। कृपया मेरे पापों को क्षमा करें, मुझे अपनी शरण में लें, और मुझे अपना शिष्य बना लें। मैं अपना जीवन आप के हाथों में समर्पित करता हूँ।” सच्चे और समर्पित मन से की गई आपकी एक प्रार्थना आपके वर्तमान तथा भविष्य को, इस लोक के और परलोक के जीवन को, अनन्तकाल के लिए स्वर्गीय एवं आशीषित बना देगी।

English Translation

Christian Faith is Not Fulfilling Rituals, Feasts, Festivals

In the last article we have seen that those who believe in following religion - the Christian religion or any other, instead of believing in and following the Christian faith, they believe in a false notion, that being acceptable to God is something like a mathematical equation. These people think and believe that if some process brings an effect and change in a person’s life, then the presence of similar effects and changes in someone’s life is automatically an evidence of the process being active in that person’s life as well. But this is not always true. We can understand this by a very simple and straightforward example - milk is a white-colored liquid; but we know very well that every white liquid is neither milk, nor can it be used or treated as milk! We also know that spurious milk that appears to be like milk is also available in the market, but the spurious milk though similar in appearance to the actual milk, is not nutritious and beneficial like milk; rather, it is quite harmful for those who consume it. This is not to say that all of those who profess to follow the Christian religion, do not love God, or are against the Lord God. In their own ways, by their own methods they love the Lord God and want to honor God, but their contrived efforts are not in accordance with God’s Word, hence are unacceptable to God and fruitless for those who believe in them. This is what, through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, the apostle Paul wrote about the devout Israelites, “Brethren, my heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel is that they may be saved. For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge. For they being ignorant of God's righteousness, and seeking to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted to the righteousness of God” (Romans 10:1-3).

Under this thinking of righteousness through observance of religion-works-rituals, their belief and trust is that by fulfilling certain prescribed rituals and ceremonies, celebrating some feasts and festivals, observing certain days etc. and by behaving like Born-Again Christian Believers regarding some things, they also become Born-Again Christian Believers and acceptable to God. After receiving the power of the Holy Spirit, the apostle Peter preached the first gospel sermon to the devout Jews who had gathered in Jerusalem to fulfill religious obligations (Acts 2), asking them to first repent of their sins, and about 3000 of those Jews accepted the Lord Jesus, and joined the disciples of the Lord Jesus (Acts 2:41), and this was the beginning of the first Church or Assembly of Christian Believers. The next verse, Acts 2:42 tells us that those who belonged to this first Church remained steadfastly committed to four things as Christian Believers, “And they continued steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine [studying and learning God’s Word], and fellowship [gathering together with other Believers], in the breaking of bread [participating in the Lord’s Table], and in prayers [gathering together to worship and beseech the Lord].” Now, the followers of the Christian religion too do these four things, but they are not steadfastly committed to doing them; rather, they do it ritualistically and in accordance with the teachings of their denominations and sects, instead of as has been taught in the Bible. Nevertheless, they trust and believe that because they too have fulfilled these things, therefore they are no different from the Christian Believers, and will be treated as such by God, because they have fulfilled these four things. But they overlook the basic fact of paramount importance, that makes all the difference - to become a Christian Believer a person first repents of his sins personally and individually, confesses them to the Lord and asks for their forgiveness from Him, submits and commits his life to the Lord Jesus to become His obedient disciple, only then, under the guidance of the Lord he steadfastly follows these four things according to what is taught in the Bible about them, and not according to their own understanding, or their denominational or sectarian teachings about them. Through this committed obedience to the Lord, unlike those who do these things ritualistically, he does not remain stuck up at one place, but continues to grow and mature in his Christian life; evidenced by a separation from the world and the things of the world seen in his life. And this change affirms that his is not a ritualistic doing of these things, but a serious, committed and meaningful participation in submission and obedience to the Lord God.

Moreover, there is another very important thing to take note and consider, that in God's Word the Bible, there is no mention or even an indication that other than the four things given in Acts 2:42, those initial Christian Believers ever did anything else, or gave any importance to any of these things, i.e., the rituals, festivals, and traditions that the followers of the Christian religion believe in, observe, and celebrate with so much importance and enthusiasm; things that nowadays have become an identification of Christianity. If one considers these things from the history of Christianity, we see that all these things, festivals, and rituals were brought into Christianity around the 4th century AD by those who were not actually Born-Again. These people continued to observe, follow, and celebrate the things of their former religion, by giving them a "christian" name and form, and the Christian Faith was corrupted by them into their contrived Christian religion. As this Christian religion was preached and propagated, their things, festivals, and rituals also started being observed and celebrated resolutely. In the Bible, there is neither any mention, nor are there any teachings or instructions given about any of these things, festivals, and rituals that are associated with the Christian religion. 

Now, another thing to ponder over is, that when till around the 4th century AD, since the beginning of the Christian Faith, the Christian Believers had been living lives pleasing to God, had been living as children of God, without any of these things, festivals, and rituals, then why did it become so essential to give so much importance and to observe these things, festivals, and rituals; and that too when they were not given by God, but were brought in from other religions, and had been contrived by men? And, the form and observance of these things, festivals, and rituals of the Christian religion that we presently see being followed by the world, is not much different from their original form and observance that they had before their being brought into christianity. These things neither pleased God at that time, nor do they please Him now; no matter how much enthusiasm, godliness, and religiosity they are observed and followed by those who believe in them. Stop a while and give it a thought, would the Creator of the creation, our living and true God, for His praise and worship be dependent upon things from paganism, idolatry, and religions contrary to Him; upon imaginary things, things contrived by human beings? Will such things and rituals actually be pleasing and acceptable to Him? When He has already given to us "all things that pertains to life and godliness" in His Word (2 Peter 1:3); then will He accept things made up by man by rejecting His Word and its teachings, and replacing them by bringing in things from outside to adulterate His Word? Will He give any recognition to such corruption; and would He accept, bless, and reward it?

In the coming days, from God’s Word the Bible, we will see some more details about following the things that the initial Christian Believers followed and did. But, if you are still thinking of yourself as being a Christian, because of being born in a particular family and having fulfilled the religious rites and rituals prescribed under your religion or denomination since your childhood, then you too need to come out of your misunderstanding of Biblical facts and start understanding and living according to what the Word of God says, instead of what any denominational creed says or teaches.

If you are still not Born Again, have not obtained salvation, or have not asked the Lord Jesus for forgiveness for your sins, then you have the opportunity to do so right now. A short prayer said voluntarily with a sincere heart, with heartfelt repentance for your sins, and a fully submissive attitude, “Lord Jesus, I confess that I have disobeyed You, and have knowingly or unknowingly, in mind, in thought, in attitude, and in deeds, committed sins. I believe that you have fully borne the punishment of my sins by your sacrifice on the cross, and have paid the full price of those sins for all eternity. Please forgive my sins, change my heart and mind towards you, and make me your disciple, take me with you." God longs for your company and wants to see you blessed, but to make this possible, is your personal decision. Will you not say this prayer now, while you have the time and opportunity to do so - the decision is yours.
