Baptisms - 13

 Baptism - When?

In our study on baptism from God’s Word the Bible, we have seen so far that in the initial Church, baptism was always given only to adults; to those who had heard the gospel, accepted it, and believed on it, and then either expressed the desire to be baptized or were consenting to be baptized. Also, in accordance with the literal meaning of the Greek word “baptizo”, baptism was always by immersion, not in any other manner; the people of the initial Church did not know of baptism by any other method. Today we will see, when should a person be baptized after coming into the Christian Faith.

Often, in the Believer’s Assemblies of Lord Jesus Christ, in Churches, and amongst people, this confusion and uncertainty is seen, when should a person be baptized? It is a common thinking that the person’s life and behavior should first be observed for some time, and if he is found to be okay in faith, only then should he be baptized. Though this seems to be a very logical and acceptable thought from human thinking and perspective, and is also the tradition of the Churches or Assemblies; but there is no support, example, or teaching in God’s Word for affirming it.

John the Baptist immediately baptized those who came to him confessing their sins and wanted to be baptized by him (Matthew 3:6); he did not ask for any evidence or proof from them of their changed lives. But the Pharisees and Sadducees who were infamous for their hypocritical lives, and wanted to get baptized without confessing their sins, only to fulfil a ritual or a formality, and wanted to get baptized only to show themselves as righteous to the people, John refused to baptize them; he asked them to first show through their lives the fruits of repentance and a changed life (Matthew 3:7-9).

In Acts chapter 2, the 3,000 Jews who accepted the Lord Jesus after Peter’s preaching, were baptized immediately (Acts 2:41), and no proof of a changed life was asked from them, nor were they put under any observation for any period of time.

Paul, then known as Saul, and was dreaded for persecuting the Church, was baptized soon after his encountering the Lord on the road to Damascus, without anyone asking or observing any change in his life (Acts 9:17-18); though Ananias, who brought God’s message to him, had doubts about him (Acts 9:13-15).

During Philip’s ministry in Samaria, Philip baptized the people of Samaria, including Simon the sorcerer, who was presenting himself the same as the other Believers, leaving his previous life, he was continuing with Phillip (Acts 8:12-13). But later, when Peter and John came from Jerusalem, then Simon’s actual condition was exposed, that he had not truly repented, and Peter asks him to sincerely repent (Acts 8:18-23). The important thing here for us in this incident, for our topic today, is that Peter and John never questioned or opposed Philip’s baptizing of Simon, did not admonish him for not being able to discern Simon’s actual state, nor asked him to remain alert in future about this happening again. This was a clear example of Simon taking baptism unworthily and of Philip not being able to correctly assess Simon; and this example could have well been used for teaching and instructions about these things, so that they would not be repeated. But God the Holy Spirit did not do this. Only God knows the actual status of any person’s repentance and change of heart, his Christian Faith. Man can and does make mistakes, and will keep making them; therefore, there is no teaching or instruction in God’s Word to first ascertain a person’s faith and only then baptize anyone.

Probably the best answer for when a Christian Believer should be baptized is in the baptism of the Ethiopian Eunuch by Philip (Acts 8:35-38). Here we see that not only did Philip baptize him immediately, but for our learning there are two things mentioned here.

The first is, the longing within the saved person to be baptized. From the preceding verses of Acts 8, we see that Philip preached the gospel to the eunuch from the book of Isaiah. But Isaiah has no mention of baptism. Therefore, it is evident that along with the gospel, in accordance with the Lord’ instructions of Matthew 28:19, Philip would have also told him about the Lord’s command to be baptized. That is why the desire to be baptized would have come into the heart of the Ethiopian Eunuch, and he expressed this desire to Philip. So, the first condition for baptism that can be inferred here is that the person, knowing the commandment of the Lord and its importance, should have this longing within himself to be baptized, and request for it. The Holy Spirit will encourage a true Christian Believer to live in obedience to the Lord’s commands and give him a desire to be baptized in his heart.

The second is, Philip’s confirming from him about it; Philip said to him that if he believes with all his heart, then he can be baptized. Take note, baptism was not meant to create a sincere belief in his heart, as is also evident from the example of Simon the sorcerer. Philip did not ask for any proof from the Ethiopian Eunuch about his faith, simply accepted his word for it, and baptized him.

We infer from this that the Christian Believer who accepts and believes in the gospel, repents of his sins, knows and understands the importance of baptism and its related teachings and instructions in God’s Word, if he considers himself ready for baptism, and asks for it, then it can be given to him. There is no need to ask for any proof, or to wait for any period of observation before baptizing him; nothing like this has been taught in God’s Word.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Repenting of your sins, and asking the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely, surrendering yourself to Him - is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. You only have to say a short but sincere prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ willingly and with a penitent heart, and at the same time completely commit and submit your life to Him. You can also make this prayer and submission in words something like, “Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sins and repent of them. I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself, paying for them through your life.  Because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, and you rose again from the grave on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God and have freely provided to me the forgiveness, and redemption from my sins, through faith in you. Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.

The Elementary Principles – 33

Baptisms - 12

Baptism - How?

In the previous two articles we have seen form God’s Word, the Bible that the baptism instructed by the Lord Jesus was always given and taken by adults; i.e., by those who had heard, accepted and believed the gospel, and were either consenting for it, or had asked to be baptized. In the Bible baptism has never been given passively, i.e., to a person, of any age, brought by someone else and then ‘baptized’, without his being aware of or understanding of what was being done to him, and why it was being done; he just remained a passive participant in the whole process that was carried out on him, without his knowledge or consent; as is always seen in infant or child ‘baptisms’, but this scenario is never seen in any baptism recorded in the Bible.

As we had seen earlier, the original Greek word “baptizo,” from which the English word “baptism” has been derived, to the people of the New Testament time meant being immersed or being dipped into, i.e., being covered by whatever liquid was being used for “baptizo.” So, for them there was no need to add some other words to specify that their use of “baptizo” meant being immersed or being dipped into. It was only much later, when different forms and ways of “baptism” started being practiced, that it became necessary to specify whether the “baptism” was by immersion, or by sprinkling, or by application of water to the forehead, or in some other manner. In its original form, and in the use of the Greek word “baptizo” in the original writings of the New Testament books and letters, it only meant one thing - being immersed into. That is why this immersion has never been specified through use of any other defining or clarifying word, since the word by itself meant just that. And this needs to be borne in mind when considering the various arguments put forward to justify the so-called non-immersion baptisms.

But still, with the use of this word “baptizo” in the New Testament texts, there are other clear and unambiguous indicators that whenever baptism was given or taken, it always implied immersion into the water, and never sprinkling or anything else. Consider some verses:

  • For the baptism given by John the Baptist, in Matthew 3:6 it is said that people came to John “and were baptized by him in the Jordan.” The use of “in” clarifies that the people being baptized went into the river Jordan. Had it not been so, it would have been written “using the water of the river Jordan.”

  • For John’s baptism, it says in John 3:23 that “Now John also was baptizing in Aenon near Salim, because there was much water there”; why would John use a place having much water, if all he needed was a little water to sprinkle or apply? John could have told the people to bring a little water with them when they came to him for baptism, if that is all that was required. Then there would have been no need for him to be at the riverside either, he could have given it in their homes.

  • For the baptism of the Lord Jesus, it is written in Matthew 3:16 and Mark 1:10 that immediately after being baptized the Lord came up from the water. The implication is obvious, He could come up from the water, only if He had first gone into it. And, why would He need to go into water, if mere sprinkling or application of water would have sufficed and served the purpose? If He went into the water, it could only be because of the literal meaning of the word “baptizo” - to be immersed or dipped into for being baptized. Now, if the baptism of the Lord Himself was by immersion, then can the followers of the Lord Jesus be baptized in any other manner; or, any ‘baptism’ done in some other manner be accepted as correct?

  • In the baptism of the Ethiopian Eunuch by Philip, it says in Acts 8:36-39, that on seeing some water by the roadside, the Eunuch asked to be baptized (verse 36). If all that was required was sprinkling or application of water, the Eunuch would have been carrying enough drinking water for that with him, or he could have waited till they reached some place where they could get a cup of clean water, which would have been sufficient, and there would have been no need for him to ask for baptism from a roadside place of water. Also, consider verse 38-39, where it is clearly mentioned that Philip and the Eunuch went into the water and came out of it. This would have been necessary only to fulfil the literal meaning of “baptizo”, not otherwise.

Wherever the act of baptism has been mentioned in God’s Word, an indicator has also been provided that it was through immersion. Otherwise, there is no mention of any “baptism” having being given by using water stored in pots in the houses, or by drawing from a well, or taking it from a small or shallow stream, etc., i.e., some water body into which the person cannot be immersed into water, but still had mere sprinkling or an application of water served the purpose, then it could have been done. The evident conclusion is that at the time of the first Church, as meant by the word “baptizo”, baptism was always and only by immersion. There is no evidence form God’s Word to support the concept of sprinkling or application of water or any other method for baptizing anyone. The only Biblically acceptable baptism is baptism by immersion; and this by itself rules out infant or child baptism, since it not only would be impractical but also dangerous to the lives of infants and children.

The Elementary Principles – 32

Baptisms - 11

 Baptism - For Whom? (2)

In our on-going study on “Baptisms,” the third elementary principle given in Hebrews 6:1-2, we have seen in the previous article that during the earthly ministry of the Lord Jesus, neither He nor His disciples baptized, except for the one mention in John 4:1-2. While He was with them, even when the Lord Jesus sent His disciples for their preaching ministry, neither did He ask them to baptize, nor did the disciples baptize anyone. But after His resurrection, in His Great Commission given to the disciples just before His Ascension, the Lord told the disciples to go and make other disciples and to baptize those who became followers of the Lord Jesus. Today, we will see the examples of the fulfilment of this instruction of the Lord Jesus, and then derive the lesson for our today’s topic.

After the giving of the Great Commission to the disciples, the first baptism that we see happening is of those 3000 Jews who on hearing Peter’s sermon on the day of Pentecost, accepted Peter’s exhortation and repented (Acts 2:37-41). After this, though there is mention of the Lord saving people and adding them to His Church (Acts 2:47; 5:12-14; 11:24; 16:5), but that they were also simultaneously baptized as these 3000 had been, is not mentioned. Similarly, when a great persecution arose against the Church in Jerusalem after the martyrdom of Stephen and the disciples were scattered because of it, they went preaching God’s Word, but again, there is no mention of any baptism being carried out along with their preaching.

The next mention of baptism is with the ministry of Philip in Samaria, and those who believed in the preaching of Philip, they were baptized (Acts 8:12). Of those who had believed, were baptized, and then continued with Philip, one was Simon the sorcerer (Ats 8:13). But we later see that Simon was not truly converted or saved, Peter asks him to repent of the bitterness and iniquity in his heart, and ask God for forgiveness (Acts 8:20-23). This aptly illustrates that baptism does not save anyone; is not a criterion for salvation. Those who claim to have accepted the gospel, and show an external change, may not actually be changed from inside. But the Spirit of God exposes them sooner or later, as He exposed Simon the sorcerer. The next baptism, is the baptism of the Ethiopian Eunuch, again through the ministry of Philip (Acts 8:36-38). The Eunuch believed that “Jesus Christ is the Son of God” (8:37), and Philip baptized him immediately, at some road-side water-body.

After this, we have the baptism of Paul, then known as Saul, which was given three days after Paul’s meeting the Lord on the road to Damascus (Acts 9:9, 18; 22:16). Then, we have the baptism of Cornelius and his household, after Peter was sent to them by the Holy Spirit and preached the gospel (Acts 10:47-48) commanded by Peter. Then, through the ministry of Paul are the baptisms of Lydia and her household (Acts 16:14-15), of the Philippian jailor and his household (Acts 16:33); of Crispus and Corinthians (Acts 18:8); of some disciples of John the Baptist (Acts 19:1-5).

While there are many things to be learnt from the above examples, and we will be considering these examples again and again when we consider other topics related to baptism. But for our current topic - who is to be baptized, we see from these examples that always and always in God’s Word it is adults who have been baptized; and that too after they heard the gospel, accepted the gospel and believed in the Word of God preached to them, and then in accordance with their belief, they either consented to be baptized or asked for it. Never has baptism been administered to non-consenting persons, nor to those who had not heard and believed in the gospel, nor passively, i.e., to somebody being brought for baptism by someone else, the person being baptized not knowing about or understanding or consenting for baptism. Also, while there is mention of family or households being baptized, e.g., of Cornelius, Lydia, and the Philippian Jailor, but there is no mention of any children – small or young being amongst them. The implication of the context is always that adults who heard and believed the gospel preached to them, at their request or with their consent, baptism, as it means literally, was given to them.

The Elementary Principles – 31

Baptisms - 10

Baptism - For Whom? (1)

In our study on baptism so far, we have seen the purpose of baptism is to externally and publicly witness about inner change that has come into a person by his confession and repentance for sins; it is to tell that he has submitted himself into the Lord’s hands, to prepare him for the inevitable accounting of his life and judgment for his rewards and consequences; and is an expression of the person’s commitment to be obedient to God. Here, it would be appropriate to also recall what baptism does not do, or, is not meant to do. Though this had already been stated in the very first article on this series, i.e., in the Prologue, but still, the readers would do well to remember that despite the very common notion amongst the people, that baptism makes one a ‘Christian’, acceptable to God, and worthy of gaining entry into heaven; but Biblically speaking, this is a patently false notion that has no support or affirmation of any kind from God’s Word the Bible. Another similarly false and baseless notion is that baptism is required for salvation, by baptism the baptized person becomes a member of God’s family, and his entry into heaven is guaranteed. In the days to come will also be looking into the various Biblical verses that are misinterpreted and misused in support of this false concept. Today, we will be considering who should take baptism, be baptized.

In the Gospel accounts, baptism is seen being given at the beginning of the accounts, by John the Baptist, i.e., prior to the beginning of the ministry of the Lord Jesus. Soon after the Lord’s baptism the Apostle John mentions that the disciples of the Lord Jesus also baptized (John 4:1-2). Then, from there onwards, there is no mention of any baptism. At the end of the earthly ministry of the Lord Jesus, in His Great Commission to the disciples, the Lord asked them to evangelize the world and to baptize those who accepted the Gospel and became His disciples (Matthew 28:19; Mark 16:16). Other than this, in between, i.e., during the time of the Lord’s ministry on earth, and even after His resurrection, there is no mention of anyone being baptized either by Him or His disciples. When the Lord sent the Apostles and other disciples for ministry and preaching the message of repentance and the Kingdom of God being at hand (Matthew 10:5-15; Mark 6:7-13; Luke 10:1-17), He gave them various instructions about what they will face and how to handle situations. He even gave them the power to heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, cast out demons and even raise the dead (Matthew 10:7); and when they came back, they reported that they could do all these things (Mark 6:30; Luke 9:10; 10:17). But there is no mention of the Lord asking the disciples to be baptizing people also, while they preached and worked miracles, when the Lord had sent them out while He was with them on earth; neither did the disciples report about baptizing anyone. But in the sequence of instructions given in the Great Commission, the Lord placed baptism immediately after the Gospel preaching (Matthew 28:19), and before miracles (Mark 16:16-18).

Before the Lord sacrificed Himself on the Cross of Calvary, paid through His life for the sins of entire mankind, was resurrected the third day, and thereby made available the way to salvation for all people of the whole world, He did not ask the disciples to baptize, since till then it had no significance. The significance of the Lord’s followers taking baptism, the application of the afore-mentioned purposes of baptism in the lives of the followers of the Lord became relevant and effective only after the way for salvation had become ready and available for mankind. This does closely and strongly associate salvation and baptism, but by no stretch of imagination does it make baptism a condition for salvation - as is often misconstrued and wrongly taught. Consider the above-mentioned references of the Great Commission from Matthew and Mark. In both the references the first thing is make followers of Christ Jesus; and then those who become the followers, they are to be baptized. It is the person’s accepting the Gospel message, not his baptism, that grants him this status of being a follower of the Lord Jesus. It is these followers of the Lord Jesus who are to be baptized, and not vice-versa; i.e., baptism does not make anyone a follower of the Lord, nor does it save anyone. In the next article, we will consider this further through the examples given in God’s Word the Bible.
