Physical healing by the stripes and the blood of Jesus - Part 1

Question: Do the stripes and the blood of Lord Jesus Christ physically heal us?

Answer:
The most common and most often committed error in interpreting Scripture is to take a particular passage or verse, or even a portion of a verse out of its context; then give it meanings and interpretations according to one’s liking or understanding; and then not only accept those erroneous meanings but also share those misinterpretations with others as ‘God’s truths’; even though those meanings do not stand up to the requirements of the context and the evidence of Biblical usage, therefore making them unrealistic and unacceptable. God’s Word, the Bible, in 2 Timothy 2:15 exhorts us to “diligently present ourselves approved to God (not to any man)” and to “rightly divide the Word of Truth”; and not fall for the trap of following teachers who instead of teaching sound doctrine, misuse God’s Word to only teach things that the audience want to hear (2 Timothy 4:2-4). To avoid falling for Satan’s ploys to misuse God’s Word (he had the audacity to do so even with the Lord Jesus – Matthew 4:1-11), we all need to take heed and obey 1 Thessalonians 5:21 “Test all things; hold fast what is good”; and be like the Berean Christians, who have been commended in the Bible for first cross checking everything from the Scriptures and only then believing in what was taught (Acts 17:11-12) – even though it was the apostle Paul who was teaching them.

In context of healing by the stripes of Lord Jesus, the Bible verse often stated is Isaiah 53:5 “But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed.” Peter too quoted from this verse in his first epistle – “who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness--by whose stripes you were healed” (1 Peter 2:24). Incidentally, and quite interestingly, other than these two verses (essentially, only a single verse), there is no other verse in the Bible containing the both the terms “stripes” and “healed.” Also, in both of these verses we see that the ‘healing’ being mentioned is the spiritual healing from effects of sin; and not a physical healing of the body from any disease, or sickness, or deformity, or any other physical ailment.

Since in common usage, the word ‘healing’ is mainly associated with physical infirmities, and with ailments of the body, hence without giving it much thought, people take it for granted that the ‘healing’ mentioned in these verses is physical healing as well. Unfortunately, many preachers and teachers also would like to have us believe it to be so; therefore they continue to emphasize and teach the misinterpretation, basing it upon verse portions taken out of context and out of continuity with the actual text of the Scriptures. They neither themselves pay heed to the context and related things in interpreting the verse or passage, nor encourage and allow us to study the context and related things of the complete verse and its passage, before accepting or coming to a conclusion about it.

Another very pertinent fact to be considered is that nowhere in the whole of the Bible, have either of the phrases “by His stripes we are healed” and “by whose stripes you were healed” ever been used or alluded to in any form of miraculous healing, by any Prophet, Apostle, or Man of God – and there is no dearth of instances of physical healings in either the Old or the New Testaments.

Understanding Entering Heaven by Force of Matthew 11:12

Matthew 11:12 is one of the enigmatic passages in The Bible, and various commentators have given different interpretations and meanings to it.

While coming to an understanding of such passages, it should be kept in mind that language and usage of words do change over time, and what a particular word meant at some time in the past (in the original as well as the translated language), may not necessarily be exactly the same as we understand it now.

One of the reasons for the difficulty in understanding this verse is the use of the word ‘violence’ and ‘violent’ and the negative connotations that we generally associate with these words in our common usage. The NIV translation uses the words ‘forcefully’ and ‘forceful’ instead, which though does mellow down the negative connotations but does not entirely do away with them. The original Greek word used in the text of this verse can mean both of the above as well as mean ‘being energetic’.

By using the alternative meanings of the original Greek words, we can also render this verse as follows: “And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven is being pressed into through forceful and energetic efforts of the committed ones” (Matt 11:12 Paraphrased); which brings it more in line with the related verse – “The law and the prophets were until John. Since that time the kingdom of God has been preached, and everyone is pressing into it” (Luke 16:16).

With this background, a possible interpretation and understanding of the verse can be: “From the time John the Baptist started giving the call to repent and undergo the baptism of repentance, till now, those who responded to his call have done so with a resolute mind and firm determination, striving to withstand all opposition and to persevere in the call steadfastly.”

But do also keep in mind that when Lord Jesus spoke these words, the era of salvation by grace had not been initiated. At that time the people still believed in righteousness by works of the Law, which is why they believed in being forceful or industrious, and energetic in their efforts to be acceptable to God. Moreover, Lord Jesus categorically used the words “From the days of John the Baptist until now”, setting a definite time frame for the applicability of the condition; and neither subsequently in the gospels, nor later in any of the epistles has this (being ‘violent’ or ‘forceful’ or ‘energetic’) been mentioned ever again as an exhortation or precondition for gaining entry into the Kingdom of God. So it would be wrong to surmise from this verse that strong self-efforts are required or are a prerequisite for gaining entry into God’s Kingdom.

But energetic and determined efforts to grow in the Christian faith and maintain the sanctity of their Christian calling after being saved by grace through repentance of sins and coming to a personal faith in Lord Jesus has always been the call for all Born Again children of God, as we see from Paul’s example of persevering and forcefully disciplining himself for the sake of his ministry, and teaching the same perseverance and willingness to endure to young Timothy from passages such as 1 Corinthians 9:24-27, 2 Timothy 2:3-5 & 4:7.

In other words, for us living in this age of grace, salvation is by God’s grace not any self efforts, but maturing in faith and being active and effective for our Lord does require our being energetic and forceful in disciplining ourselves as well as facing opposition in the practice of our faith.

Miscellaneous Questions / कुछ प्रश्न - 7 - Tasting Death / मृत्यु का स्वाद चखना

Click Here for the English Translation

Understanding "Tasting Death" Stated by Lord in Matthew 16:28

Question: How do we understand the Lord Jesus' statement in Matthew 16:28 "Assuredly, I say to you, there are some standing here who shall not taste death till they see the Son of Man coming in His kingdom"?

Answer:

To understand the statement of the Lord Jesus related to the Lord's Kingdom, or the Kingdom of Heaven, we need to keep in mind some other statements as well. It is a general tendency that as soon as we come across the phrase "Kingdom of Heaven" or "Kingdom of God", we start thinking of and understanding it as referring to the future Kingdom of God that will be established at the end of the world and after its final judgement. There is nothing wrong with this, it is okay to think along these lines, but here this is not the only understanding of what the Lord has said. Because if this seen as the only possible explanation, then this joins it to the second coming of the Lord, which is an event of an uncertain date, and people have been waiting for it for nearly 2000 years. Therefore, the understanding the Lord’s statement of Matthew 16:28 in that context seems impractical, and difficult to accept, leading to the confusion related to the acceptance of this statement of the Lord. But if we look at Matthew 21:31, where the Lord Jesus while responding to His opponents and critics says, “… Jesus said to them, "Assuredly, I say to you that tax collectors and harlots enter the kingdom of God before you.” We see here that the Lord Jesus is referring to the entry of tax-collectors and harlots into the Kingdom of Heaven/God in the present continuous tense, and not the future tense (‘they will enter’), nor of any uncertainty (‘will be able to enter’). The evident implication is that at the very time when the Lord Jesus was saying this, the entry into the Kingdom of Heaven/God was happening, it was underway. Therefore, to understand that the only interpretation of the statement ‘entry into the Kingdom of Heaven/God’ was to see it as a future event would not be a factual interpretation, or the only applicable meaning.

To understand this statement of the Lord given in Matthew 16:28, consider some things the Lord Jesus had said regarding the Kingdom of God or the Kingdom of heaven, during His time of Ministry on earth:

Now after John was put in prison, Jesus came to Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom and saying, 'The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel'" (Mark1:14-15). The Lord began His ministry with the call to repentance, since “Kingdom of God is at hand” – pay attention to the words of the Lord, the kingdom is not in the distant future, but is at hand – it’s time has come; He did not say that the kingdom is going to come, rather, that the time is fulfilled and it is at hand.

The Lord Himself says in Luke 11:20 "But if I cast out demons with the finger of God, surely the kingdom of God has come upon you"; implying that the presence of the Lord and His working shows that the Kingdom of God is present. Sometime later, "Now when He was asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, He answered them and said, "The kingdom of God does not come with observation; nor will they say, 'See here!' or 'See there!' For indeed, the kingdom of God is within you."" (Luke 17:20-21 – the ‘within you’ here can also be translated ‘amongst you’ or ‘in your midst’ – as is done in HCSB, ESV2011, NASB, EBR, LEB, NET, TS2009 translations). At the beginning of His ministry the Lord says that the Kingdom if God is at hand; during the ministry, He teaches the learned Pharisees, the scholars of God's Word, that the Kingdom of God does not come like a thing or an event, but was already present amongst them right at that very moment, implying it was amongst them because of the presence of the Lord amongst them. If they believed in the Lord, if they accepted the Lord, then they would enter the Kingdom of God.

Look at Mark 12:28-34; the Scribes want to trap the Lord regarding the commandments of God; at the end of this conversation the Lord says to that one Scribe who had asked Him the question and then had unquestioningly accepted the Lord's answers as correct, “Now when Jesus saw that he answered wisely, He said to him, "You are not far from the kingdom of God." But after that no one dared question Him” (Mark 12:34). The Lord Jesus was saying to that Scribe that by virtue of having accepted the correct understanding of God's commandments, you are quite near to the Kingdom of God, now take the next step and turn this theoretical knowledge into a practical experience, apply your knowledge in your life practically, obey the commandments of the Lord, and you will enter the Kingdom of God.

From the above we can understand that the Kingdom of God or the Kingdom of heaven, that the Lord Jesus talked and taught about, it was accepting the Lord as Savior, coming into His obedience, becoming submissive to Him, which is in accordance with John 1:12-13 – becoming a child of God by coming into faith in Him, and thereby becoming entitled to be with Him in His Kingdom.

A short while before His being betrayed and caught for crucifixion, the Lord Jesus in John 14:18-20 also said to His disciples: “I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you. "A little while longer and the world will see Me no more, but you will see Me. Because I live, you will live also. At that day you will know that I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you.” In other words, the Lord promises His disciples to always be with them after His sacrifice and resurrection. Although unseen, yet since then He always has been with His disciples.

Through the sacrifice of the Lord Jesus on the Cross, and His resurrection from the dead, the way to salvation, to entering heaven got opened and became available for all of mankind, and anyone can now enter through faith in Him and repentance from their sins; i.e. the Kingdom of heaven or the Kingdom of God was now available to everyone.

Keeping these things in mind, when you see what the Lord Jesus said to Peter in Matthew16:19 and in the preceding verses in context of the formation of the Church, i.e. the body of Christian Believers, then that which the Lord Jesus said to Peter can be paraphrased and understood as follows: “I will give to you the keys to get people into heaven, i.e. the way to salvation, and whosoever accepts that key, i.e. the gospel of salvation, the door to enter heaven will open for that person; but the one who rejects that key, i.e. rejects the gospel of salvation, the door to enter heaven will be closed for that person” – and we see in Acts 2 that at the first using the key of the gospel i.e. preaching of the gospel done by Peter, three thousand people repented and accepted the Lord, and became His disciples (Acts 2:41), i.e. by accepting the key of the gospel, the door to enter heaven was opened for them.

The same context also applies to Matthew 16:28. At the time when the Lord Jesus had said this thing, many of those who were then present there would also have been present at the time of Peter's first preaching, and would have been living till the establishing of the first Church, and it is quite possible that many of them would have been witnesses of this incidence of Acts 2. These witnesses then would have seen the arrival of the Kingdom of the Son of God, the Lord Jesus Christ, into the lives of those coming into faith in the Lord Jesus, and these witnesses would have seen the transformation it brought in the lives of those who came to faith in the Lord Jesus – all this before the witnesses themselves got to taste death. Moreover, as the Lord Jesus had promised, He was with His disciples then and is with them even now. In this manner all aspects of Matthew 16:28 are fulfilled in the establishment of the Church through the first preaching of Peter in Acts 2; and there is no necessity to see this in context of the second coming of the Lord – which is the greatest obstacle in accepting this statement, as the only valid fulfilment if this statement.

This again goes to show that to avoid falling into errors in understanding God's Word, it must always be seen and studied in its context and in light of other related verses or passages of the Bible.

Miscellaneous Questions / कुछ प्रश्न - 6 - Unjust Steward / चतुर भण्डारी

Click Here for the English Translation

What Does the Parable of the Unjust Steward (Luke 16:1-13) Teach us?

Of all the parables and teachings given by the Lord Jesus this is one of the most difficult to understand and explain. The difficulty is primarily because it is apparent from what we read and see that the steward has done wrong, he has been dishonest, but yet it appears that the Lord Jesus is commending him, and presenting him as an example worth emulating. This is true to some extent, but not entirely.

To understand the Lord Jesus's intentions in this parable we need to pay attention to what the steward used – planning, smartness, prudence, purpose and appropriate methodology, to make the most out of the circumstance he was in. From the latter verses i.e. 10 to 13, it is quite apparent that the Lord is clearly teaching against dishonesty and wealth acquired through wrong means; hence it stands to reason that here in the parable, the Lord could not be saying or implying to His disciples that the steward's dishonesty was something worth emulating. Yet, there is no doubt that the Lord Jesus did find something worthy in what the steward did, and therefore asked His disciples to learn from what the steward did and implement it in their lives. The things that the Lord commended in the steward were, his sense of keeping his wits about him in dire circumstances, his being smart and prudent, and his working with a plan to fulfill his purpose (Luke 16:3-4).

That steward knew that the time has come for him to give an account Luke 16:2; and he was also aware of his impending fate. But he did not loose heart or give up; instead he used whatever time and resources were available to him, he did all that he could do, to ensure that his future does not remain dark, but becomes good (Luke 16:5-7). This is what the Lord is teaching to His disciples (Luke 16:8), that as the people of the world are they too should be clever, and learn to use their resources, whatever they have, worthily and properly. The Lord has not called us to be foolish or gullible, but to be clever and discerning (Matthew 10:16). It is not that the Lord want us to be devious, but that we learn to take stock of the situation at hand, and then prudently act accordingly (Luke 12:56-58; Luke 14:25-33; Matthew 10:23).

This is not just the teaching of the Lord Jesus, or only the New Testament. In the Old Testament, the book of Proverbs begins with instructions to be wise, prudent and understanding (Proverbs 1:1-7); and immediately goes on to warn about the serious consequences of not paying heed to these instructions to be wise, prudent and understanding (Proverbs 1:20-33). David, a man after God’s heart, behaved wisely in carrying out his responsibilities and caring for preserving his life (1 Samuel 18:5, 14, 30). Psalms 119:98-100 shows us how God makes His followers more wise and understanding than the people of the world around them, and He teaches His people wisdom and prudence through His Word, so that they may utilize these qualities in their day to day life, when facing the people and circumstances of the world, in achieving their purpose of witnessing and living for the Lord.

It should be the endeavor of the Lord's disciples to enter their eternity in the Kingdom of God with honor; or, in other words, to enter with good rewards, which they will utilize in their eternity. While on earth, they should plan well, be smart and prudent, and keep looking for ways to fulfill their purpose of living and witnessing for the Lord, and making good use of the opportunities God provides them for this purpose. Like the Lord Jesus, His disciples should be resolute and firm in fulfilling their God given purposes (Luke 9:51-52); and like Paul, all disciples should plan their activities (2 Corinthians 1:17) and actively keep striving and trying one way or another to work for the Lord, instead of being passive and waiting for things to happen (Acts 16:6-10).

The entry into heaven, i.e. our Salvation is through coming to faith in the Lord Jesus, repenting of our sins and receiving the Lord's forgiveness for them, solely through the grace of God. But our rewards for our eternity are granted to us by God based on our works; the judgment of Christian Believers, the Born Again children of God will not be for their salvation, but for giving them rewards for their work for the Lord, and there will be some who will enter heaven for eternity empty handed (1 Corinthians 3:12-15).

Through this parable of the Unjust Steward the Lord is teaching His disciples to ever remain undaunted by circumstances, be smart and prudent, to keep an eye on their purpose and endeavor to fulfill that purpose. No matter how difficult or disappointing the situation may be, they ought to adopt a prudent or appropriate methodology, as that steward did, to turn the dire circumstances into favorable ones. The Lord’s disciples ought to use their worldly possessions and wealth in such a manner that 'when it fails,’ or is gone, i.e. at the completion of their time on earth, the people who benefited from the disciple’s wealth and other resources on earth, will be the reason for the disciple’s being welcomed into eternity with honor (Luke 16:9).

Through this parable the Lord was not teaching us to be dishonest, but to be smart and prudent, to remain focused on our purpose, and without getting disappointed, without loosing heart, use all our circumstances wisely to maintain and increase our eternal rewards.

इसके लिए YLT का अनुवाद है – “and of the tree of knowledge of good and evil, thou dost not eat of it, for in the day of thine eating of it--dying thou dost die” – मूल इब्रानी भाषा में यह नहीं लिखा है कि “इसे खाते ही तुम मर जाओगे” या “तुम तुरंत ही मर जाओगे।”

Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, and Death

Question: Why did God forbid man to eat the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evilDid God lie in saying that you will die on eating the fruit

Answer:
To comment upon, and for an expository study of God’s Word the Bible, and to understand or explain them, certain essential principles ought to be followed, so as to have a proper understanding, and to be able to correctly explain or teach the things from the Bible. One of these essential principles and a basic fact is that God never lies, and since “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” (John 1:1), therefore, the Word of God too will never be untruthful or fraudulent, and therefore will never contradict its any other part or portion. The Lord God who claimed that He is "the Way, the Truth, and the Life" (John 14:6) can He be considered a liar? Therefore, if there is any error or contradiction in the understanding of any part of God’s Word, then it is absolutely certain, that the error or contradiction is in our understanding or exposition of the Word, and not in the Bible. Therefore, instead of accepting that error or contradiction we should deeply and prayerfully study that portion of God’s Word, re-consider its interpretation and ascribed meanings, ponder over them, and correct our understanding and exposition of that part of God’s Word, instead of trying to correct the Word of God.

In doing this some things have been very helpful for me; whenever I have a doubt about the meaning or exposition of any of the words of the Bible, to have a correct understanding and meaning of those words I pray about it to God, and I prayerfully look at their original Hebrew (for the Old Testament) or Greek (for the New Testament) language words used. I do not know either Hebrew or Greek, but the details of the words and their translation into English, their usage and various meanings is readily available through the internet for everybody. Simultaneously I also look at that portion in various translations of the Bible to see how the different translators have presented the meaning or thought behind those words. While doing this I make it a point to see Young's Literal Translation (YLT) which gives a literal translation of the word from the original language, instead of the possible meaning as determined by the translators. If there still remains any doubt or confusion only then do I go to different Commentaries to see what the commentators have said about that word or that portion. I very rarely need to use this last recourse; very often in answer to prayers, God clears up the confusion as I look at the various meanings and usages of that word in its original language, and if still some doubt or confusion remains, then it usually gets clarified by reading it up in the various translations.

Therefore before approaching this topic it is essential that we get rid of the notion that God spoke a lie – it is an insult to God to say, believe, or imply any such thought about God and His Word.

Now, let us consider the two questions; First, why did God not want that man should eat of the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evilThis is quite commonly seen in all our families that not everything in the house is for the use of every member of the family, and usually children are forbidden from using many things in the house. Those children are a part of the family, they have a right to those things as part of their familial property and inheritance, but they are not permitted to use them till they attain a certain age, ability and understanding regarding the use of those things. For example take the things commonly and very often used in the kitchen of the house e.g. knife, or matches, or some electrical equipment; or some machinery used by adults e.g. motorcycle, car or any other machinery. As the children grow up, learn to use those things carefully and properly, develop an understanding regarding the appropriate and inappropriate ways of using those things, learn about the precautions to be observed while using those things, they also get the permission to start using those things. Adam and Eve were created as adults, but in context of the things of the world and of using them, they were still not experienced enough! God had never said that they would never ever get to eat the fruits of those two trees (Genesis 2:9). God had forbidden it in the beginning; but it was possible that after some time, once they had reached a certain maturity God might have permitted them to eat the fruits; but by letting the serpent beguile them they destroyed everything. When God created the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, had kept that tree in the Garden of Eden, and had asked Adam to tend the garden (Genesis 2:15), a clear indication that at some point God would have permitted them to partake of the fruit (1 Corinthians 9:9, 10, 13). Therefore to believe that God did not want it to happen, is to fall for Satan’s same ploy and commit the same mistake as Eve; and this mistake will then provoke to disobey and then sin against God. Before accusing God, it is better to study His Word thoroughly and correct our own misconceptions.

Now let us look at the second question: Death because of eating of the fruit is stated in Genesis 2:17. The YLT says for this verse – “and of the tree of knowledge of good and evil, thou dost not eat of it, for in the day of thine eating of it--dying thou dost die” – In the original Hebrew language it is not said that “you will die as soon as you eat it” or that “you will die immediately on eating it.” Even the English translations commonly say “you will surely die” meaning, “you most certainly will die”, but not what is commonly and often understood, that “you will immediately die.” There is a world of a difference between these two meanings. ‘Immediately’ means ‘at that very moment’; whereas ‘surely’ means that ‘it is inevitable’ that you will die – but it is not being stated or indicated when this will happen, the only thing said is that you certainly cannot escape death; death will inevitably come upon you. The translation given in YLT – “dying thou dost die” means “in the process of dying you will eventually die;” in other words, from the moment you eat of the fruit you will begin to die, the process of your eventual death will be set into motion, and eventually you will surely die – does not every person begin to die from the moment he is born? But here in the Bible, nowhere is it said when and how this process of dying will come to completion. When we see the subsequent events we see that this is what actually happened – Adam and Eve (and then all their progeny) died at an age (and are continuing to die). God had said ‘you will surely die’, and they surely did die – here the word ‘immediately’ has been inserted by the (mis)interpreters and (mis)expositors, it has not been stated by God. So, now, is their any lie or falsehood in what God had actually said? Is it justified to accuse God of a lie because of people misinterpreting what He actually said?

Before accusing God of of a wrong we would do well to repeatedly and thoroughly examine the basis of our accusation, pray about it and tell God clearly and unhesitatingly “I am unable to understand, or accept this thing, please clear my doubts about it” and He will do so (James 1:5). But please don’t ever accuse God of wrongdoings, it has very serious and deleterious consequences.
