The Holy Communion – 104

English Translation

Implications of Participation (2)

In the previous article we had begun considering the question that can a Christian Believer live his own life, or, does participating in the Holy Communion place some responsibilities on him. To answer this question, we had taken 1 Corinthians 10:16-22, and started considering it. We saw from verse 16 that it is clearly written there that on partaking of the Lord’s Table, the Christian Believer comes into the fellowship of the body and blood of the Lord Jesus, which places upon him the responsibility that his life and behavior must not provide anyone any opportunity to disrespect the Lord God, to point fingers at Him in a demeaning manner. Today, we will consider this thing a bit further, look at some other things given in this passage.

This privilege of such close fellowship with the Lord God, by itself requires a certain decency and responsibility. For this reason, Paul says in 2 Corinthians 5:15,17 “15: and He died for all, that those who live should live no longer for themselves, but for Him who died for them and rose again.” and “17: Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” In other words, those who have become people of the Lord Jesus are expected to no longer live for themselves but for the Lord, knowing that the Lord has made them into a new creation; they are not to revert to their old life and behavior. The participant in the Holy Communion, renews and affirms his commitment to live in accordance with this privilege that has been granted to Him, every time he participates. As he remembers the Lord “and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, "Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me." In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me."” (1 Corinthians 11:24-25), he is also to remember that he is now in fellowship with the Lord God, and has to always demonstrate this through his life. While a ritualistic, non-committal participation will never make the participants realize this implication; those who realize what is expected of them and participate worthily, will also strive to live a life that honors the privilege granted by the Lord to them.

We will consider the other verses in 1 Corinthians 10:16-22 in the upcoming articles ahead.

If you are a Christian Believer and have been participating in the Lord’s Table, then please examine your life and make sure that you are actually a disciple of the Lord, i.e., are redeemed from your sins, have submitted and surrendered your life to the Lord Jesus to live in obedience to Him and His Word. You should also always, like the Berean Believers, first check and test all teachings that you receive from the Word of God, and only after ascertaining the truth and veracity of the teachings brought to you by men, should you accept and obey them (Acts 17:11; 1 Thessalonians 5:21). If you do not do this, the false apostles and prophets sent by Satan as ministers of Christ (2 Corinthians 11:13-15), will by their trickery, cunningness, and craftiness render you ineffective for the Lord and cause severe damage to your Christian life and your rewards.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord Jesus, then to ensure your eternal life and heavenly rewards, take a decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now. Wherever there is surrender and obedience towards the Lord Jesus, the Lord’s blessings and safety are also there. If you are still not Born Again, have not obtained salvation, or have not asked the Lord Jesus for forgiveness for your sins, then you have the opportunity to do so right now. A short prayer said voluntarily with a sincere heart, with heartfelt repentance for your sins, and a fully submissive attitude, “Lord Jesus, I confess that I have disobeyed You, and have knowingly or unknowingly, in mind, in thought, in attitude, and in deeds, committed sins. I believe that you have fully borne the punishment of my sins by your sacrifice on the cross, and have paid the full price of those sins for all eternity. Please forgive my sins, change my heart and mind towards you, and make me your disciple, take me with you." God longs for your company and wants to see you blessed, but to make this possible, is your personal decision. Will you not say this prayer now, while you have the time and opportunity to do so - the decision is yours.

The Holy Communion – 103

English Translation

Implications of Participation (1)

In the past few articles, we have been considering some questions related to the Holy Communion about which there are confusions among God’s people. The confusions, and even the questions themselves, are because of the tendency of twisting God’s Word to make it fit into different denominational teachings and interpretations, rather than correct those teachings and interpretations and bring them in line with God’s Word. We have seen from God’s Word the Bible, that when those issues and questions are seen directly from God’s Word, without any denominational considerations, the answers are straightforward and clear. It has also been repeatedly emphasized in these articles that participation in the Lord’s Table is not a ritual, and is not to be done as fulfilling a formality. This is further affirmed by the answer to our today’s question - Can a Christian Believer live his own life; or, does the Holy Communion place some responsibility on him about his life and behavior?

For the answer, let us turn to 1 Corinthians 10:16-22 from God’s Word the Bible. In this part of God’s Word, Paul, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, is pointing out some things related to the Lord’s Table that are very important and fundamental. But unfortunately, these aspects are hardly ever, if at all, stated, emphasized, or taught about in the Churches, even in the gatherings of the Born-Again Christian Believers. Paul also points out that what he is saying are not some new teachings or doctrines, but ones that are seen even in the Old Testament worship. Here, in this section, Paul is talking about two fundamental and important things - firstly, the implications of the partaking, and secondly, the responsibility that the participant has; and we will be considering them in this and subsequent articles. There are two implications stated here - living a life of communion or fellowship with the Lord, and unity amongst the participants; and the responsibility of the Believer is to live a life of separation from the world.

In 1 Corinthians 10:16 it is clearly stated that by partaking of the cup and bread of the Holy Communion, the partaker is coming into communion or fellowship with the blood and body of Christ, i.e., joins himself to them. The Creator and Sustainer of the universe, gives to the Christian Believers the privilege of fellowshipping with Him, communing with Him; a privilege He has not given to even His obedient angels. Therefore, it is binding upon the participant that he should not be living and behaving in any such manner that will spoil the reputation of the Lord and cause others to cast aspersions upon Him through the Believer’s life and living. Through participation in the Holy Communion the participants affirm their being in, and, also living in close fellowship with the Lord Jesus, as the Lord Jesus had said in His prayer, in John 17:21-23, before being caught for crucifixion.

In the coming articles we will consider this further with the help of some other Bible verses.

This is further affirmed by the answer to our today’s question – Can a Christian Believer live his own life; or, does the Holy Communion place some responsibility on him about his life and behavior?

For the answer, let us turn to 1 Corinthians 10:16-22 from God’s Word the Bible. In this part of God’s Word, Paul, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, is pointing out some things related to the Lord’s Table that are very important and fundamental. But unfortunately, these aspects are hardly ever, if at all, stated, emphasized, or taught about in the Churches, even in the gatherings of the Born-Again Christian Believers. Paul also points out that what he is saying are not some new teachings or doctrines, but these are seen even in the Old Testament worship. Here, in this section, Paul is talking about two fundamental and important things - firstly, the implications of the partaking, and secondly, the responsibility that the participant has; and we will be considering them in this and subsequent articles. There are two implications stated here – living a life of communion or fellowship with the Lord, and unity amongst the participants; while the responsibility is of living a life of separation from the world.

In 1 Corinthians 10:16 it is clearly stated that by partaking of the cup and bread of the Holy Communion, the partaker is coming into communion or fellowship with the blood and body of Christ, i.e., joins himself to them. The Creator and Sustainer of the universe accords the Christian Believers the privilege of fellowshipping with Him, communing with Him; a privilege He has not accorded to even His obedient angels. Therefore, it is necessary for the participant that he should not be living and behaving in any such manner that will spoil the reputation of the Lord and cause others to cast aspersions upon Him through the Believer’s life and living. Through participation in the Holy Communion the participants affirm their being and living in close fellowship with the Lord Jesus, as the Lord Jesus had said in His prayer before being caught for crucifixion, in John 17:21-23.

This privilege of such close fellowship with the Lord God, does require a certain standard and responsibility. For this reason, Paul says in 2 Corinthians 5:15,17 that those who have become people of the Lord Jesus are expected to no longer live for themselves but for the Lord, knowing that the Lord has made them into a new creation; they are not to revert back to their old life and behavior. The participant in the Holy Communion, renews and affirms his commitment to live in accordance with this privilege that has been granted to Him, every time he participates. As he remembers the Lord (1 Corinthians 11:24-25), he is also to remember that he is now in communion with the Lord God, and has to always demonstrate this through his life. While a ritualistic, non-committal participation will never make the participants realize this implication; those who realize what is expected of them and participate worthily, will also strive to live a life that honors the privilege granted by the Lord to them.

The Four Pillars of Christian Living - 3 - Breaking of Bread (26)

Implications of Participation (1)

In the past few articles, we have been considering some questions related to the Holy Communion about which there are confusions among God’s people. The confusions, and even the questions themselves, are because of the common tendency of twisting God’ Word, so as to make it fit into different denominational teachings and interpretations, rather than correct those teachings and interpretations and bring them in line with God’s Word. We have seen from God’s Word the Bible, that when those issues and questions are seen directly from God’s Word, without any denominational bias or considerations, the answers are straightforward and clear. It has also been repeatedly emphasized in these articles that participation in the Lord’s Table is not a ritual, is not to be done perfunctorily. This will be affirmed further by the answer to our today’s question - Can a Christian Believer live his own life; or, does the Holy Communion place some responsibility on him about living his life and his behavior?

There are two implications stated here - living a life of communion or fellowship with the Lord, and of unity amongst the participants; while the responsibility is of living a life of separation from the world.

Therefore, it is incumbent upon the participant that he should not be living and behaving in any such manner that will dishonor the reputation of the Lord and cause others to cast aspersions upon Him through the Believer’s life and living. Through participation in the Holy Communion the participants affirm their being in, and living in close fellowship with the Lord Jesus, as the Lord Jesus had said in His prayer before being caught for crucifixion, in John 17:21-23.

This privilege of such close communion with the Lord God, does require a certain decency and responsibility.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Repenting of your sins, and asking the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely, surrendering yourself to Him - is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. You only have to say a short but sincere prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ willingly and with a penitent heart, and at the same time completely commit and submit your life to Him. You can also make this prayer and submission in words something like, “Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sins and repent of them. I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself, paying for them through your life.  Because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, and you rose again from the grave on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God and have freely provided to me the forgiveness, and redemption from my sins, through faith in you. Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.

The Four Pillars of Christian Living - 3 - Breaking of Bread (2)

To Listen to this message in English Click Here

To live a practical Christian life, it is essential for every Christian Believer to be obedient to God and His Word. In Acts 2, seven teachings related to practical Christian living are given; and four of them are found in Acts 2:42. The early Christians diligently followed these four teachings, and this led to a rapid increase in the number of Christian Believers, in their being steadfast and committed to their faith, and in the growth of the churches. Hence, these four teachings are also called the “Pillars of the Christian life;” and it is expected of all Christian Believers that like those early Christian Believers, they too will be diligent and sincere in observing these four teachings. In the last few articles, we have looked at five of the seven teachings of Acts 2, and in the last article we have begun to consider the sixth of these teachings, the third of the four pillars, i.e., the “breaking of bread.” In the previous article we saw that although most members of traditional or denominational churches and many Christian Believers also regard the participating in the breaking of bread, or partaking of the Lord's table, as a ritual; or observe it as a formality, but this is inappropriate and has very serious consequences. We have also seen that there are some misunderstandings among today's Christians about the Lord's Table, as were there amongst the people of the congregation in Corinth, in that early church. That is why God the Holy Spirit, through Paul, gave them the correct teachings and guidance. The teachings that were then necessary for them, are equally necessary for us today, and as said in the previous article, we will look at them under seven headings, primarily from Acts 11:17-34. Today we'll look at the first heading, the background to the Lord's Table.

1. Background to the Lord's Table

From the four gospel accounts we learn that the Lord Jesus instituted the Lord's Table as His last activity with His disciples, before He was betrayed to be crucified. The Lord did this to take the Passover feast, celebrated by the Jews, from being symbolic, to its actual and fulfilled form. The Jewish people celebrated, and still celebrate, the Passover as a remembrance of their deliverance from bondage in Egypt and slavery to Pharaoh. This Passover festival and its feast is a prototype of man's deliverance from the bondage of sin and slavery to Satan through the sacrifice of the Lord Jesus Christ. As given in Exodus 12, Passover was to be celebrated in every Jewish family; and to prevent the death that came upon the Egyptians, i.e., the enemies and adversaries of God's people, the Jews, i.e., God's people, were to apply the blood of the sacrificial lamb on the doorposts of their homes. Every member of the Jewish family, whether child or adult, had to participate in this feast. It was not permitted by God for any guest or any Gentile to partake of this feast; it was only for the family members. Similarly, the Lord also observed and established the Lord's Supper with His closest of disciples, not with His worldly family. Notice that at that Passover meal, at the establishment of the Lord's table, Mary and the Lord's brothers and sisters were not present. Also, it is worth noting and considering that although a large crowd accompanied the Lord during His ministry, and there were other disciples in addition to the Lord's twelve disciples; other disciples are also mentioned in God’s Word (“Seventy others” – Luke 10:1; “many” – John 6:60, 66 among whom were some who did not believe in Jesus – John 6:64; and “120” gathered together before Pentecost (Acts 1:15), but the Lord celebrated this feast, and established the Lord's Supper or Lord's Table only with those who were His intimate disciples and companions; and not with his other disciples. As we will see in the coming article when we discuss things related to the establishment of the Lord's table, Judas Iscariot, who betrayed the Lord, though he was present at the Passover meal, but he had already left at the time of the Lord's establishment of the Table; meaning he had no part or participation in the Lord's Table. All these things provide important teachings regarding the observance of the Lord's Table, its significance, and partaking of it.

In this letter to the congregation of Christian Believers in Corinth, Paul too corrects members of God's family about their mistakes regarding partaking of the Lord's Table. Just as the entire Jewish family, children, adults, and elders, all were to participate in the Passover festival and feast, similarly, according to the Bible, all of God’s family, whether spiritual infants or young children (1 Corinthians 3:1-3), or mature adult Christian Believers, all are to partake of the Lord's Table. Just as people outside the Jewish family were not allowed to partake of the Passover festival and feast, so no one other than members of God's family is allowed to partake of the Lord's Supper, as is exemplified by the exclusion of Judas Iscariot. We have seen in earlier articles that becoming part of the God's family does not happen by being born in a religion-caste-family and following its customs, but on the basis of John 1:12-13; i.e., by each individual deciding to repent of their sins, accept the Lord Jesus as Savior, and deciding to be an obedient follower of the Lord. Once a person becomes part of God's family, all the privileges and blessings associated with that family become available to that person.

From the above, and from the observance of the Passover festival and the feast, it is clear that only those who were God's people were included, and no one else. This also implies that partaking of the Lord’s Supper does not make one a member of God's family, nor does anyone receive any privileges by participation; rather, the one who already is a member of God's family, only he can join. This fact strongly refutes the misconceptions that partaking of the Lord's table will make one belong to the Lord, or bring one to salvation, or give them any benefits or privileges. Rather, only those who already are a part of God's family are to participate; this Table is only for those who already have received the privileges and benefits of being God's children. Therefore, this sacrament should not be misunderstood and misused as a means of acquiring "credentials" for entry into heaven - which never happens through the Lord's Table. Partaking of the Lord's table does not bring forgiveness of sins, nor sanctification, nor salvation - all this has to be done by true submission to the Lord Jesus and coming to faith in Him; those who satisfy this initial condition are then privileged to participate in the Lord’s Table.

In the next article we will consider the second point, the Lord's establishment of the table.
