Teachings Related to the Elementary Principles – 10

Repentance From Dead Works - 6

    In our study of Elementary Principles from Hebrews 6:1-2, we are presently considering the first principle, i.e., repentance from dead works. In other words, repentance from those seemingly religious and good works that do not result in any spiritual growth or maturity in the person doing them. So far, we have seen three kinds of dead works from the Bible - self-determined ministries (Matthew 7:21-23), self-determined ways of worshipping God (Matthew 15:3-9), and self-determined status of salvation (Acts 8:5-25). Today we will begin considering some very common misconceptions very emphatically preached and taught by some sects and denominations, regarding God the Holy Spirit, His availability and His ministry amongst the people of God. These misconceptions and false teachings have already been considered on this blog in some past articles on teachings about the Holy Spirit and His ministry. So, we will only go through the main false teachings and wrong doctrines regarding the Holy Spirit and His ministry amongst the Christian Believers preached and taught by some sects and denominations.

    Some sects and denominations preach and teach that receiving the Holy Spirit after salvation is a separate experience, and receiving the Holy Spirit requires time and special efforts by the Believers. But as we have seen in the earlier articles of the present series, the clear teaching of God's Word is that the Holy Spirit is automatically given by God the Father to every truly Born-Again Christian Believer, from the moment of his salvation (Acts 19:2; Ephesians 1:13-14; Galatians 3:2); to always reside in him, as long as he is on this earth (John 14:16-17). Moreover, we see from 1 Corinthians 12:3, that no one can call Jesus Lord, except by the Holy Spirit. So, if a newly Born-Again person does not have the Holy Spirit, then how can he address Jesus as Lord or pray to him as his Lord? Moreover, since he does not have the Holy Spirit, and cannot call upon the Lord Jesus, then what is his relationship with God the Father (John 1:12-13)? Similarly, we see from Romans 8:9 that unless the Spirit of Christ, i.e., the Holy Spirit dwells in a person, he does not belong to the Lord. Where then does the newly Born-Again Believer stand spiritually, if he does not have the Holy Spirit in him? Because according to the contrived notion of these sects and denominations, the newly Born-Again Believer does not immediately receive the Holy Spirit, therefore, by Romans 8:9, he does not belong to God. If, in context of both these references, God is still this Believer’s Father, then how is it possible for the Believer to be in the intimate relationship of Father and child with one member of the Holy Trinity, but have no relationship with the other two members; not even being able to call upon Jesus as Lord, nor belonging to the Lord? See for yourself how this subtle satanic ploy tries to disrupt and fragment the Holy Trinity.

    Bearing in mind the teachings of 1 Corinthians 12:3 and Romans 8:9, also consider the inherent inconsistency in this contrived notion. If it is accepted that the new Believer does not have the Holy Spirit with them, then he can neither address Jesus as Lord, nor will he be accepted as belonging to Him. We see in Lord Jesus’s own words from John 14:16, 26 that God the Father gives the Holy Spirit as an answer to the Lord’s request and in the Lord’s name. So if the new Believer, can neither address Jesus as Lord, nor does he belong to Him, then through whose mediation, to whom, and on what basis can he pray to receive the Holy Spirit, and on what grounds will his prayer be heard and answered? On the basis of their own contrived notion, the prayers of such a person will remain unanswered. By bringing this contrived teaching through using some verses while ignoring the others, these people have created an insurmountable contradiction for themselves. But the Scriptural fact is that when the related verses are taken together and seen in their proper context, it becomes clear that the Bible does not support their contrived contention that receiving the Holy Spirit is a separate experience from receiving salvation, being Born-Again.

    In teaching “tarrying” and praying to receive the Holy Spirit, these sects and denominations misinterpret and misapply Acts 1:4-8 which is about the Lord asking the initial disciples to wait till they had received the Holy Spirit before going out for their ministry. Notice, the Lord had asked them to wait to be empowered by the Holy Spirit, which He would send (John 14:16, 26; 15:26; 16:7); but He never asked them to pray to receive the Holy Spirit, nor did He say that unless they prayed and asked for the Holy Spirit, He would not come upon them. Their receiving the Holy Spirit was a pre-determined thing, promised by the Lord even before His crucifixion, as given in the references from John’s gospel above. Moreover, in Acts 2:38, in Peter’s answer to the Jews convicted by his message, though Peter says to them to believe and be baptized and they will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit; but Peter never asks them to “tarry,” or having believed to specially pray to receive the Holy Spirit. Inserting all these things into Acts 1:4-8 is man-made, and not a God given doctrine. Also notice that besides this initial waiting of the disciples to receive the Holy Spirit, this teaching has never been either repeated, nor practised anywhere else, nor was anyone ever asked why they did not do so, in the entire New Testament despite all the evangelistic activities and Church planting all over the known world.

    In trying to justify a delay in receiving the Holy Spirit, the adherents of these sects and denominations also use Acts 8:14-16, which is about the ministry of Philip amongst the Samaritans, and Acts 19:6, which is about the ministry of Paul amongst the disciples of John the Baptist who had started to follow Lord Jesus. In both instances, there was a clear delay in people coming to faith in the Lord and their receiving the Holy Spirit. But note that in neither of these instances, the recipients of the Holy Spirit were especially “tarrying,” praying, and fasting to receive the Holy Spirit; rather they were all going about their daily routine. In fact, the disciples of John the Baptist had not even heard about the Holy Spirit (Acts 19:2). When Peter and John laid hands on the Samaritans (Acts 8:17-18), and Paul laid hands on the disciples of John the Baptist (Acts 19:6), these people received the Holy Spirit. We will consider and understand this later when learning about the fourth elementary principle, i.e., laying of hands. For now, suffice it to say that there is no Biblical support for the false teaching and wrong doctrine of receiving the Holy Spirit being separate from believing in the Lord Jesus and being Born-Again.

    Since the Holy Spirit is given only to an actual Believer, on his truly coming to faith in the Lord Jesus, and since God knows those who actually are His (2 Timothy 2:19), therefore those who sincerely repent of their sins and fully submit themselves to God, will also receive the Holy Spirit without even having to ask for Him. But those who, in God’s eyes, are not truly Born-Again, have not actually repented of their sins, they will never receive the Holy Spirit no matter how long they tarry, how much they pray or fast about it – all of it will be vain and fruitless until they are truly Born-Again; when they do, they immediately and automatically will receive the Holy Spirit as a gift from God. So, this tarrying, praying, fasting etc. to receive the Holy Spirit is another kind of “dead work” since it is unBiblical and vain; it does not bring any spiritual growth or maturity.

    We will carry on from here in the next article, and learn about some more false teachings related to the Holy Spirit preached and taught by these sects and denominations.

    If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Voluntarily repent of your sins and ask the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely surrender yourself to Him - this is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. You only have to say a short but sincere prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ willingly and with a penitent heart, and at the same time completely commit and submit your life to Him. You can also make this prayer and submission in words something like, “Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sins and repent of them. I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself, paying for them through your life.  Because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, and you rose again from the grave on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God and have freely provided to me the forgiveness, and redemption from my sins, through faith in you. Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.

The Holy Communion – 100

English Translation

How Soon After Coming To Faith? (1)

       In considering the questions associated with participating in the Lord’s Table, we have already seen about the frequency of doing so - at least once a week, if not more frequently; and that Biblically there is nothing to support the common belief that it can only be administered by an ordained Pastor - any Born-Again Christian Believer, a committed disciple of the Lord Jesus can do it. Another question that often comes up is, how soon after coming to faith can the Christian Believer participate in the Holy Communion? Again, God’s Word the Bible is very clear about it, leaving those who read and study it, in no doubt about the answer. But because of denominational rules and regulations made by men in their wisdom then imposed over and above God’s Word, and made mandatory, instead of following what God has given and instructed, therefore, confusion and variations have come up amongst the followers of denominations, sects, and groups.

       Let us go back to Peter’s first preaching after being empowered by the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost, and what happened in response to his message. Peter had addressed the “devout Jews” (Acts 2:5), who had gathered in Jerusalem to observe the Feasts prescribed by the Law. As he spoke to them from the Scriptures, these devout Jews were “cut to the heart” and asked Peter what should they do (2:37), since it was apparent to them that their religion, religiosity, observance of the Law, and keeping of the Feasts had not made them acceptable to the Lord God, had not saved them. Peter asks them to repent of their sins and be baptized to receive the promise of God, made for everyone all over the world (2:38-40). Now, let us look at Acts 2:41-42 “Then those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them. And they continued steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers.”

       There is no confusion here, about what happened when the devout Jews heard Peter’s solution to their problem. The Biblical text is clear and unambiguous in these verses 41 & 42, about the response of, and towards those Jews, “on that very day”. For our clarity, let us outline their responses, from these two verses:

        * Those who received Peter’s word were baptized - immediately after believing, with no waiting for ascertaining and confirming the status of their faith being mentioned.

        * Those who had believed were “added to them”, i.e., to the Lord’s disciples - they immediately were accepted and became a part of the group of the disciples of the Lord Jesus.

        * These new disciples, immediately after being joined into the group of followers of the Lord Jesus, also began to steadfastly continue in the Four Pillars of Christian Faith, i.e., learning God’s Word from the Apostles, in Fellowship, in Breaking of Bread i.e., participating in the Holy Communion, and in Prayers.

             This is further affirmed from 2:46-47, where all those who were added to the Church by the Lord every day, also participated with the others in the Four Pillars of Christian Faith mentioned in Acts 2:42, without any waiting or delay being imposed on them for any reason whatsoever.

        Consider again, Paul’s corrective discourse in 1 Corinthians 11:17-34, given through the guidance of the Holy Spirit. As we had taken note from this section, in the previous article, about the necessity of an ordained Pastor to administer the Lord’s Table; similarly, now, take note if there is any mention of anyone’s duration of being in faith, in any context, in this passage? No! There is nothing of this sort mentioned or implied. It would have been very convenient and logical to hold the newcomers into Faith responsible for the sorry state of affairs in the Church and for the gross irregularities seen in participating in the Lord’s Table. But the Holy Spirit does not have Paul say this or even remotely imply it in any manner. Neither here in this letter to the Corinthian Church, nor anywhere else, in any of the epistles, is it ever said that since new-comers to the Faith were allowed to participate as ‘full-fledged members’, were immediately conferred all the rights and privileges like the more senior and more mature members, therefore, they created these problems due their immaturity in understanding about the Christian Faith, its sacraments and their observances.

       Therefore, we can safely conclude that no one should have any misunderstandings on this count about a Born-Again Christian Believer’s participating in the Lord’s Table. From the moment of his repenting of sins and accepting the Lord Jesus as his savior, every person is a part of the Church, a member of God’s family, and has the same rights and privileges as anyone else in the Church and the family of God has. The only thing not permitted for new comers into the Faith is the office of Bishop (1 Timothy 3:6) - Bishop, not in the way it is seen and understood nowadays, but as it was seen and understood at the time Paul wrote it - meaning a member of that Church functioning as an overseer of the functioning of that local Church. Therefore, in effect, the Word of God does not prescribe any waiting period, or time for affirming one’s faith and commitment to God, before permitting them participation in the Holy Communion.

       In the following article, we will consider how and why this confusion has come around. If you are a Christian Believer and have been participating in the Lord’s Table, then please examine your life and make sure that you are actually a disciple of the Lord, i.e., are redeemed from your sins, have submitted and surrendered your life to the Lord Jesus to live in obedience to Him and His Word. You should also always, like the Berean Believers, first check and test all teachings that you receive from the Word of God, and only after ascertaining the truth and veracity of the teachings brought to you by men, should you accept and obey them (Acts 17:11; 1 Thessalonians 5:21). If you do not do this, the false apostles and prophets sent by Satan as ministers of Christ (2 Corinthians 11:13-15), will by their trickery, cunningness, and craftiness render you ineffective for the Lord and cause severe damage to your Christian life and your rewards.

       If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord Jesus, then to ensure your eternal life and heavenly rewards, take a decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now. Wherever there is surrender and obedience towards the Lord Jesus, the Lord’s blessings and safety are also there. If you are still not Born Again, have not obtained salvation, or have not asked the Lord Jesus for forgiveness for your sins, then you have the opportunity to do so right now. A short prayer said voluntarily with a sincere heart, with heartfelt repentance for your sins, and a fully submissive attitude, “Lord Jesus, I confess that I have disobeyed You, and have knowingly or unknowingly, in mind, in thought, in attitude, and in deeds, committed sins. I believe that you have fully borne the punishment of my sins by your sacrifice on the cross, and have paid the full price of those sins for all eternity. Please forgive my sins, change my heart and mind towards you, and make me your disciple, take me with you." God longs for your company and wants to see you blessed, but to make this possible, is your personal decision. Will you not say this prayer now, while you have the time and opportunity to do so - the decision is yours.

 The Church, or, Assembly of Christ Jesus - 83

English Translation

False Teachings About Receiving The Holy Spirit (2)

We have seen from 2 Corinthians 11:4 that Satan spreads his false doctrines and deceptive teachings mainly about three topics. These three topics are, the Lord Jesus Christ, God the Holy Spirit, and the Gospel. In the recent preceding articles, we have seen about the wrong teachings that Satan spreads about the Lord Jesus. In the previous article, we had begun to see the false concepts and wrong teachings that Satan spreads about the second topic, the Holy Spirit. Today we will see some more False concepts and wrong teachings spread by Satan, and consider them on the basis of what is given in God's Word the Bible about God the Holy Spirit.

The Lord Jesus had assured His disciples before His crucifixion that the Holy Spirit will be given to them as their Helper (John 14:16, 26), and the Holy Spirit is given by the Lord God to every truly Born-Again Christian Believer. But these preachers and teachers of wrong things, try to control and manipulate this blessing from God by men. Contrary to the clear and unambiguous teachings of the Bible, one of the main false teachings of these deceptive people is that the Holy Spirit is not received at the time of salvation, but one has to ‘tarry’, pray, and make efforts to receive it. Then these false teachers and preachers tell their own contrived methods involving waiting, efforts, and prayers, which according to them are necessary to receive the Holy Spirit. They try to justify it all by taking portions of God’s Word out of their context, then misinterpret and misuse them to justify their wrong teachings. To justify their notion of “tarrying” they misquote and misuse Acts 1:4-8, taking it out of its context. Let us look at it in its context.

In Acts 1:4-8 the Lord Jesus gave an instruction to His disciples that they should not leave Jerusalem, but remain there, wait for the promise of the Lord God, about which the Lord Jesus had talked to them earlier, and wait for this promise to be fulfilled. After this, what this promise is, has been made very clear in the subsequent verses 5 and 8, that it is the disciple’s receiving the Holy Spirit.

There are two very important things to take note of over here:

Firstly, the disciples, before going out to preach the gospel had to wait for the promise to be fulfilled, had to wait for God’s time and God's power to proceed for their ministry. But the Lord never said to them that while they were waiting, they will have to do something special, or persistently plead for being given the Holy Spirit before God, or make some special efforts so that because of those efforts or pleadings God will grant them the Holy Spirit, as many denominations and people preach and teach, and for this they organize special meetings too, and emphasize on the necessity of all these things. The giving of the Holy Spirit was to be in God’s time and by God’s method, not by anything, any special efforts or prayers and pleadings that these disciples would do.

The most common and important cause of misinterpreting and deriving wrong teachings from the Bible is using some word, or phrase, or sentence, or passage out of its context, and then based on that limited portion of God’s Word, build up a doctrine and start preaching and teaching it. This misuse of God’s Word is the basis of preaching and teaching this false doctrine that one has to wait, pray, and make special efforts to receive the Holy Spirit.

A very important point to ponder over about this doctrine is that in the whole of the New Testament, never again has this concept of “tarrying” or waiting and pleading ever been stated or taught. Also, nowhere in the New Testament, amongst the newly formed Churches and new-comers to the faith in Christ, has anyone ever been admonished that they should have waited and pleaded before God to receive the Holy Spirit, or has ever again been advised to wait. Similarly, in the whole of the New Testament neither has anyone weak in faith and struggling in his ministry ever been advised to make some special efforts to obtain the Holy Spirit and be empowered to carry on in the ministry. Rather, at many places it has been taught and told that the Holy Spirit is given by the Lord the moment one comes to faith in the Lord, is Born Again. This becomes clear on considering the following verses:

* Acts 10:44; 11:15, 17 - on believing and coming into faith

* Acts 19:2 - on believing

* Ephesians 1:13-14 - sealed by the Holy Spirit on being saved

* Galatians 3:2 - By the hearing of faith

* Titus 3:5 - “the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit” have been mentioned together for the same thing - salvation i.e., being Born-Again.

Having seen the first important thing given in Acts 1:5-8 about receiving the Holy Spirit, said by the Lord to His disciples, we will look at and understand about the second important thing in the next article.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord Jesus, then take a decision in its favor now to secure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. The Lord's security and blessings are present where there is obedience of the Lord, where His Word is honored and followed. If you are still not Born Again, have not obtained salvation, or have not asked the Lord Jesus for forgiveness for your sins, then you have the time and opportunity to do so right now. Ask the Lord Jesus to forgive your sins, and voluntarily and sincerely surrender yourselves into His hands - this is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. All you have to do is say a short prayer, voluntarily and with a sincere heart, with heartfelt repentance for your sins, and a fully submissive attitude. You can do this in this manner, “Lord Jesus, I confess that I have disobeyed You, and have knowingly or unknowingly, in mind, in thought, in attitude, and in deeds, committed sins. One prayer said with a sincere and surrendered heart will turn your present and future, your life here on earth and in the next world, forever and make you heavenly and blessed. Will you not say this prayer now, while you have the time and opportunity to do so? The decision is yours.

Growth through God’s Word /

The Four Pillars of Christian Living - 4 - Prayer (17)

To be continually joined with God in prayer, i.e., to keep conversing with God about everything, at all times; speak to Him about our things, and listen to what He has to say, is an essential and inseparable part of practical Christian living. It is by doing this that the Christian Believers can stay safe from being misled by Satan and falling into sin. The initial Christian Believers and the first churches continued steadfastly in four things given in Acts 2:42, of which prayer was the fourth one. For the past few articles, we have been considering about and checking out the prevalent wrong concepts and false teachings prevalent amongst the Christians about prayer from the Bible, so as to understand their correct Biblical form, application, and following them in personal lives. In this context, presently we are considering and learning about asking prayers “in faith” and asking them “in the name of Jesus.” We have seen the actual meaning and application of these two phrases from the Bible, that the Lord had not said these phrases about any kind of prayer made by anyone. Rather, the Lord had spoken them for those prayers made by His true, surrendered, and obedient disciples, which were in the will of God and consistent with the Word of God. From the last article we have started to consider another related fact from the Bible - the disciples of the Lord doing miracles. We saw through references from the Bible, that during the earthly ministry of the Lord, the disciples of the Lord could do the gospel preaching, casting out evil spirits, healings, etc., only when the Lord had given them the permission and power to do these things. Except for these few occasions when the disciples did them, during His earthly ministry, it was the Lord who had done these things Himself. Today we will look further about this on the basis of what the Lord has said in His Word.

On the basis of the references and context mentioned in the previous article, it is evident that those true, surrendered, and obedient disciples of the Lord, could not do on their own and outside of the will and permission of the Lord, even the things they had done in obedience to the Lord after being instructed and empowered by Him. In this context, take note of another instruction given by the Lord. At the time of His ascension to heaven, the Lord had instructed His disciples in Matthew 28:19-20 “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Amen.” Along with this, the Lord had also instructed in Acts 1:4, 8 that “And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, "which," He said, "you have heard from Me;” and “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth."” As we have seen in the previous article, these disciples of the Lord had already done these things, when the Lord had sent them out for ministry. But now, although the Lord had kept it for them that after He had gone, they had to go and do it again from Jerusalem to the end of the earth, but not immediately; only after receiving the Holy Spirit and His power.

The implication is evident, till they had received the Holy Spirit and His power, even those true disciples of the Lord, on the basis of their earlier experiences, did not have the power to do their Lord assigned ministry. They were to go and do the assigned ministry only after they had received the power once again. And that is what the disciples did. They continually went to the Temple to praise and worship God (Luke 24:53), and they gathered with the other disciples to pray (Acts 1:13-15). But they neither preached the gospel, nor did anything else related to their ministry, till on the day of Pentecost, they received the Holy Spirit and His power. Once that happened, with the first sermon Peter preached, three thousand devout Jews received salvation, the disciples started to preach fearlessly and do miracles. Despite severe persecution and opposition, the numbers of the Christian Believers and churches continued to increase; and within a short span of time, they were being called “These who have turned the world upside down” (Acts 17:6).

In context of our current study, a question that arises is, when these disciples had already done these same things earlier, when the Lord had sent them for their ministry, then after the ascension of the Lord to heaven, why did they have to wait to do them, till they received the Holy Spirit and His power? We will look into it and about the miracles done by the Apostles, in the next article.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Repenting of your sins, and asking the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely, surrendering yourself to Him - is the only way to salvation and heavenly life.
