Teachings Related to the Elementary Principles – 04

Patience and Perseverance

In the previous articles on the elementary principles, as an introduction, we have seen from Hebrews 5:11-14 how and why it is necessary for every Christian Believer to keep learning the Word of God, and simultaneously to keep teaching it to others as well. If a Believer neglects this aspect of his Christian living and ministry, then he starts regressing in his spiritual maturity and growth. Because of this spiritual regression, he may eventually come down to the level of being a spiritual infant or babe, and will need to be taught the elementary principles all over again. The re-teaching of these principles is necessary, since these elementary principles are foundational for every Believer. Unless the Believer is well versed and established in them, he will not be able to comprehend the higher things, the more serious and advanced teachings of God’s Word, as the author of this letter has said in Hebrews 5:11-12. It was the expectation of the author, thereby, of God the Holy Spirit, under whose inspiration this letter was written, that the Believers to whom this letter was addressed should have matured to not only be teaching others, but also to receive the more profound teachings of God’s Word. But since they had not lived up to the expectations, therefore through the Holy Spirit, the author of this letter reminds them of these elementary principles by naming them in Hebrews 6:1-2.

From Hebrews 6:1-2 we see that the author is not going into the discussions about these elementary principles, but only reminding them what these six foundational principles are; and then asking them to move ahead in them,  i.e., to go on to perfection. The principles stated here are, repentance from dead works, faith towards God, doctrine of baptisms, of laying of hands, of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment. The evident implication is that these Christian Believers were expected to revise and brush up their learning about these principles; and God the Holy Spirit residing in them would be helping them to do so.

There is an important teaching here for the Christian Believers today, to keep revising and brushing up on their learning of the fundamental principles of faith, besides aspiring to learn the higher things. Keeping in touch with the foundational principles is very important for all Believers, since in their ministry, a significant portion of their time will be spent communicating and interacting with either new Believers, or with those still growing out of their spiritual childhood towards spiritual maturity. Hence, they will need to use these foundational principles far more than the higher things. Moreover, as we have seen from Hebrews 5:14 in the previous article, the “solid food” belongs to those who are mature; so even after learning the higher things, they will not be able to use them amongst the spiritual infants and small children. For sure, the higher things have to be learnt, but not at the cost of neglecting or forgetting the foundational teachings.

This also shows how patient and longsuffering our Lord God is. Instead of getting perturbed and agitated about His people, His children not living up to the expectations, not fulfilling their responsibilities, He once again gets down to giving them a fresh start; showing them where and how to start and to catch up on lost time (James 1:5). This is not the only instance of this gracious attitude of the Lord. Recall the Lord’s handling of Peter’s failures; Peter had not only denied the Lord thrice, but even after being forgiven by the Lord and restored back, even after seeing the resurrected Lord, he once again went back to his fishing, and six other disciples also decided to go with him; but the Lord once again dealt so patiently and lovingly with him, and restored him back to his ministry (John 21). And, on the day of Pentecost, it was Peter who preached to the devout Jews and three thousand accepted the Lord. Again, it was Peter who stood up to the religious leaders when they tried to prevent them from preaching the gospel (Acts 4:8-20; 5:29-32); and it was through Peter that the gospel was first sent to the household of Cornelius (Acts 10, 11)  i.e., to the Gentiles. Besides these, there were many other ways in which Peter was mightily used in the first Church, all because the Lord was patient and longsuffering with him, and was willing to give him another chance.

Another instance of this patience, forbearance, and willingness to give another chance to the unfruitful, is the life of John Mark, who was given ministry opportunity with Paul and Barnabas, but left in-between, and returned, so Paul was no longer willing to give take him along; because of this Paul and Barnabas broke up. Paul went with Silas, while Barnabas took John Mark with him to Cyprus (Acts 12:25; 15:36-39). Later we find that John Mark is mentioned as a laborer with Paul, along with others (Philemon 1:24), and towards the end of his time, Paul refers to him as someone useful for him in his ministry in 2 Timothy 4:11; and Peter refers to Mark as his son in 1 Peter 5:13; and we have the Gospel of Mark written for us through him. Had Barnabas not persevered with him, he might not have been restored back and used so effectively in the first Church. The Lord’s well-known parable of the fruitless Fig tree (Luke 13:6-9) also illustrates this attribute of our Lord.

This is a lesson for the Christian Believers to not be impatient and short-tempered in handling people who do not live up to their expectations, but like the Lord, they too should give people time and try to build them up, nurture them, help them in the weak areas of their lives by pointing those areas out to them and work with them to strengthen those areas. In times to come these currently faltering people, through the strength and guidance of God can turn into those through whom God works mightily.

We will now begin to consider these elementary principles one by one from the next article. From the next article we will begin considering the first elementary principle, i.e., repentance from dead works.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Voluntarily repent of your sins and ask the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely surrender yourself to Him - this is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. You only have to say a short but sincere prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ willingly and with a penitent heart, and at the same time completely commit and submit your life to Him. You can also make this prayer and submission in words something like, “Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sins and repent of them. I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself, paying for them through your life.  Because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, and you rose again from the grave on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God and have freely provided to me the forgiveness, and redemption from my sins, through faith in you. Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.

The Holy Communion – 64

English Translation

The Lord’s Table - Arrogance, an Evidence of Sin (2)

In the previous article we had seen that despite Paul’s love and care for them, wanting to do good for them, correct them and bring them nearer to God, his desire to make them even more useful for God, some people of the Corinthian Assembly did not agree with him, opposed him. They wanted to control the Assembly and run it in the way they wanted; therefore, they wanted to demean Paul and show him to be untrustworthy. If we consider the characters of the Bible, then it becomes evident that the people living a life of compromise with the world and in sin, and staying away from the truths of God’s Word, they have always opposed and rejected God’s people, and God’s attempts to correct and bring them to the right path (Acts 7:51-52). Moses, who delivered the Israelites from the bondage of Egypt, and who was called the humblest person on earth and most faithful by God, had to face this from his own family (Numbers 12:3, 7), and also the congregation of Israel (Numbers 16:1-3). Even the Lord Jesus had to suffer the same from His family (John 7:5), and from the people of His region (Matthew 13:54-57; Mark 3:21; 6:1-6). Therefore, this behavior of the Corinthian Church towards Paul was nothing unique or unusual. But Paul’s response to the situation provides a lesson for us, about how the Lord’s people, the spiritual people, should deal with such a situation. The way Paul responded was similar to the way all the others mentioned above had also responded. Today we will look into Paul’s response to this situation.

In contrast to the attitude that some in the Corinthian Church had developed towards him, Paul though forthright for the Word of God and doctrines, remains humble, understanding, and willing to put up with their misunderstandings and misconceptions about him, so that he may deliver them from their errors and Satan’s hand into which they had placed themselves. Despite all that was wrong with them, not just about him, but in their spiritual lives and as the Church of the Lord Jesus, he never ever questions their being the Born-Again children of God, being the Christian Believers; rather always keeps reminding them of their being saved and being the family of God, teaches them what was expected of them and how they ought to conduct themselves. This contrast places before us the stark fact that sin brings arrogance, misunderstandings, misconceptions, and hardening of hearts; but godly living brings humility, forbearance, and a tolerant, understanding attitude, even while being forthright and committed to the Word of God. The evident implication for the participants in the Lord’s Table is that if, in the life of a Christian Believer, there is any arrogance, intolerance, back-biting, desire to bring down or humiliate a Believer, casting aspersions on others, a hardening of heart, etc. then there is sin that has not yet been settled in that person’s life, and is lurking to pounce. Instead of letting it simmer inside and wreak havoc at some opportune moment, first bring it to the Lord and settle it before it destroys the blessings of the Lord, and then participate in the Holy Communion in a worthy manner.

If you are a Christian Believer and have been participating in the Lord’s Table, then please examine your life and make sure that you are actually a disciple of the Lord, i.e., are redeemed from your sins, have submitted and surrendered your life to the Lord Jesus to live in obedience to Him and His Word. You should also always, like the Berean Believers, first check and test all teachings that you receive from the Word of God, and only after ascertaining the truth and veracity of the teachings brought to you by men, should you accept and obey them (Acts 17:11; 1 Thessalonians 5:21). If you do not do this, the false apostles and prophets sent by Satan as ministers of Christ (2 Corinthians 11:13-15), will by their trickery, cunningness, and craftiness render you ineffective for the Lord and cause severe damage to your Christian life and your rewards.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord Jesus, then to ensure your eternal life and heavenly rewards, take a decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now. Wherever there is surrender and obedience towards the Lord Jesus, the Lord’s blessings and safety are also there. If you are still not Born Again, have not obtained salvation, or have not asked the Lord Jesus for forgiveness for your sins, then you have the opportunity to do so right now. A short prayer said voluntarily with a sincere heart, with heartfelt repentance for your sins, and a fully submissive attitude, “Lord Jesus, I confess that I have disobeyed You, and have knowingly or unknowingly, in mind, in thought, in attitude, and in deeds, committed sins. I believe that you have fully borne the punishment of my sins by your sacrifice on the cross, and have paid the full price of those sins for all eternity. Please forgive my sins, change my heart and mind towards you, and make me your disciple, take me with you." God longs for your company and wants to see you blessed, but to make this possible, is your personal decision. Will you not say this prayer now, while you have the time and opportunity to do so - the decision is yours.

Things Related to Christian Living – 90

The Four Pillars of Christian Living - 4 - Prayer (32)

In the previous articles we have seen that prayer, i.e., conversing with God, is an integral part of practical Christian living. It is God’s will and command that His people converse with Him continually, for everything, to receive His guidance and remain safe from the wiles of the devil. As given in Acts 2:42, the initial Christian Believers used to steadfastly observe four things. The fourth of those four is praying. We have been learning about the original form and observance of these four through the examples and references about them in God’s Word the Bible. Presently, while learning about prayer, on the basis of Matthew 6:5-15 we are looking at a passage which is commonly known as the “Lord’s Prayer,” and the Christians usually memorize it in their childhood, and then keep repeating it by rote on every occasion and for everything, without ever trying to think and understand about it. We have seen that actually it is not a ‘prayer’, it is rather an outline, a framework, based on which the Christians can build their individual prayer to be acceptable to God. In this outline given by the Lord there are three things that the Lord has said should be asked from God. In the previous article, we have seen from verse 11 about being totally dependent upon God. Today we will see the second thing, about being one who forgives others.

It is written in Matthew 6:12 “And forgive us our debts, As we forgive our debtors” and then in the related verses 14-15 it is written “For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.” The Lord has taught His disciples that to be forgiving towards others is to be an integral part of their character, their attributes, and their behavior. They will receive forgiveness from God in a manner similar to the way they forgive others. The basis of the entire gospel is forgiveness. Had God not forgiven us based on the sacrifice and resurrection of the Lord Jesus, then we would never have been reconciled with God and would have never received the other related things and blessings from God. And even now, if God is not patient and forgiving towards us, then it will not be possible for us to continue with Him; since our flesh, our old self, continually keeps provoking us to walk contrary to God, commit sin, do something wrong, just as Paul on the basis of His own experiences, writes in Romans 7:15-25. From the way God has revealed His name to Moses (Exodus 34:5-7), from it we learn about the longsuffering and forgiving nature of God. During the earthly ministry of the Lord Jesus, His teachings and His healings were based on forgiving people. The Apostle John wrote, “He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked” (1 John 2:6). Therefore, it is evident that the Lord’s disciples, like the Lord, should be patient, longsuffering, and forgiving. They should demonstrate this attribute of the Lord in their lives; in Matthew 6:14-15, the Lord has emphasized upon this.

Now, this is common knowledge that being forgiving is an attribute of the Lord God. Everyone knows that like their Lord, the Christians too should be forgiving; even though hardly anyone actually demonstrates it in their lives. Take note that in Matthew 6:11-13, there are three things given, which the people of God have to ask from God the Father. In other Words, these three are things that do not naturally come into the lives of the Christian Believers; and neither can the Christians, through any efforts or capabilities of their own, create and develop them in their lives. The Christians can only receive these things from God; and that is why the Lord taught to ask God for them. To be able to truly forgive someone in their heart, is also one of these three attributes. But here, associated with this attribute of truly being able to forgive someone from their heart, there is a thing, which is hardly ever given any thought. Not only do we have to sincerely desire and ask for this attribute, but it has to be developed by practicing it, to make it effective in our lives. Moses in the Old Testament, and Paul in the New Testament, are two excellent examples of this. After Moses ran for his life from Egypt, to teach him to be patient, longsuffering, and keep caring with a forgiving heart, God gave him the task of shepherding dumb sheep to train Moses for 40 years. When after forty years of practical training, these attributes developed and got established in Moses, it was then that God gave him the task of delivering His rebellious, stiff-necked, disobedient people who would be murmuring for everything, out of Egypt and take them to Canaan. Paul’s Christian life was also full of difficulties, problems, opposition, people working against him, conspiring against him, and his facing betrayal from the Christian Believers and the churches (2 Corinthians 4:8-12; 11:23-28). But Paul never said anything against those who opposed him and created problems for him. Not just Moses and Paul, but all the prophets of God had to face opposition, problems, rebellions from their own people. But without saying anything against those tormenting them, they just persevered on the way shown and told to them by God, fulfilling their ministry.

What lessons in practical Christian living does this put before us? The disciple of the Lord has to be forgiving, there is no alternative. This attribute of being forgiving cannot be created and developed by anyone within themselves. They will have to pray and ask God for it, and receive it from Him. But it is not enough to just receive this attribute, they will have to develop it and make it effective, only then can it be of use in the life of a Christian. To develop it and make it effective, like for Moses, Paul, and other people of God, one has to pass through difficult and painful circumstances and experiences. Without such training, it will not become effective in our lives, and we will not become useful for the Lord. Now, in this context, please take note of what Paul had to say after writing about the persecutions and problems he had to suffer, “Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day. For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory, while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal” (2 Corinthians 4:16-18). Paul is calling the severe sufferings, persecutions, opposition, hatred, etc. that he suffered throughout his Christian life as “our light affliction, which is but for a moment,” because of which, for eternity he is accumulating “a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory.” And then, towards the end of his time on earth, without any fear or malice towards anyone, he could say “For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved His appearing” (2 Timothy 4:6-8).

This ‘prayer’ given in Matthew 6:12, in the way it is spoken by rote, without understanding it or paying any attention to it, seems very easy to say; but without God’s strength, submission to Him, help from Him, and His guidance, it is impossible to carry it out. It is not easy even for the true, surrendered, obedient disciples of the Lord to go through the training of this ‘prayer.’ But those who do go through it, how many and what kind of glorious rewards they accumulate for themselves, we will only be able to know once we reach there. In the next article we will consider the third prayer topic that the Lord has given in this ‘prayer.’

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Repenting of your sins, and asking the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely, surrendering yourself to Him - is the only way to salvation and heavenly life.

Things Related to Christian Living – 44

The Four Pillars of Christian Living - 3 - Breaking of Bread (19)

We have been learning the teachings essential for practical living from Acts 2:42. There are four things given in this verse, and the initial Christian Believers steadfastly did them. Therefore, they were edified in their spiritual lives; could remain firm and steady in their Christian faith despite all adverse circumstances; and the churches grew continually. Because of this growth causing and providing stability and steadfastness, these four are also called the “Pillars of Christian Living.” Presently, we are pondering over and learning about the third of the four pillars, i.e., “breaking of bread.” In contrast to those initial Christian Believers who steadfastly observed these four things, in God’s Word the Bible we have the Christian Believers of the Church in Corinth. They had terribly spoiled their Christian living; many wrong things had come into them, and their spiritual lives had become very deplorable. Amongst their many corruptions, one was their participation in the Holy Communion unworthily, as a mere formality, through which they had dishonored and misused it. Because of this behavior, they had become guilty of being punished by God. The Holy Spirit, through the Apostle Paul, had letters written to them, to make them understand, correct, and teach them about it. In Paul’s first letter, in 1 Corinthians 11:17-34, we have the teachings regarding our current topic, i.e., about participating worthily in the Holy Communion. We are considering these teachings under seven points. Presently we are on verses 31-34 for the seventh point, “Final Comments,” and we have seen verses 31 and 32. Today we will consider some more things related to participation in the Lord’s Table from verses 33-34.

7. Partaking in the Holy Communion - verses 31-34 - (Part 2)

We see in 1 Corinthians 11:20-22 about a wrong concept regarding the Holy Communion that had come into the Christian Believers of Corinth - some of them had started taking part in it as a feast. They would bring food from their homes, and eat it there, all by themselves, showing it off to others, but not sharing with them; and some would even become drunk by drinking the wine. But some others in the assembly would never get to participate in any feast. Though we have no reason given in the Word for their doing this, it is possible that they did it using the Lord celebrating the Passover feast at the time of instituting the Lord’s Table. Even if this was the reason, yet, their doing this was completely wrong and improper. It only showed their totally wrong understanding and improperly using that which was given in God’s Word. The Lord and His disciples had together participated in one feast. It was not that the disciples had individually brought their own food, and were sitting separately from each other, eating all by themselves, while showing off to the others. Moreover, as we have seen earlier, the Lord’s given method of participation in the Holy Communion was “one bread and one cup for everyone,” and all who were present there (Judas Iscariot had left by the time the Lord instituted the Holy Communion) took part from the same bread and same cup of wine. Therefore, on this basis also, those who brought their own food, and ate it separately, were doing wrongly, and not according to what the Lord had shown to be done. Then, in verse 22, the Holy Spirit reprimands them, and tells them that the place for eating and drinking in this manner is their home, participation in the Lord’s Table is not to be done in this manner.

Now here, in verses 33-34, in the last part of this seventh point, the same has been reiterated. But here we see another thing of practical applicability from Paul. While coming to the conclusion of this topic, once again he addresses them honorably and in love as “my brethren”, and then proceeds with what is to be said. This is something to be taken note of, that despite their very serious wrongs, he neither calls them unbelievers, nor does he pointedly demean anyone in particular, nor does he judge anyone, nor does he take sides of any individuals, speaking in favor of some and against others. Not only did Paul address everyone at par, but also despite their deplorable spiritual condition, he still calls them “my brethren” and thereby joins himself with them, lifts them up to his state. This is a very important lesson to learn for all the Pastors and Elders of all the churches and Assemblies. Following this is a very important part of resolving untoward situations and differences amongst the members of the congregation. Recall that in John chapter 21, the Lord Jesus too, when Peter and others with him, in their state of being depressed and frustrated, had gone back to their previous occupation of earning a living by fishing, at that time too the Lord had used this method to restore them back. He had Himself gone to them, and instead of taunting or reprimanding those tired fishermen who had unsuccessfully labored the whole night, the Lord lovingly addressed them as “children,” then told them the way to be very successful in their work (John 21:5-6), and even prepared and kept ready food for them (John 21:9). Then, after this, during their conversation, to restore the depressed and frustrated Peter and others back into fellowship with Him, He neither reprimanded them, nor said anything about what they had done. Instead, there, in the presence of all who had gone back, the Lord gave responsibilities to Peter. Thereby He expressed His love for him, and showed him how important he was for the Lord for the ministry in the days ahead. At the beginning of this letter written to the Church in Corinth, Paul has also adopted the same strategy. Paul Knew that the Church in Corinth had become very badly spoiled and corrupted. But still in the first nine verses of chapter one, Paul in his opening address to them, calls them Believers, commends and appreciates them, and joins himself with them. Then he addresses them, not in fury and indignation, but in love and with understanding, and then starts telling them their wrongs and teaching them on how to correct them. This is one of God given methods of addressing and correcting the problems in the churches.

We will continue pondering over this section in the next article, and then also address another related matter.
