    पिछले लेख से हमने परमेश्वर के वचन बाइबल में से एक नई श्रृंखला – कलीसिया और मसीही जीवन में परमेश्वर के वचन के द्वारा बढ़ोतरी के बारे में सीखना आरंभ किया है। हमने पिछले लेख में देखा था कि प्रथम शताब्दी में मसीहियत की तीव्रता से होने वाली स्थापना और बढ़ोतरी का मुख्य कारण प्रेरितों तथा अन्य प्रभु के सेवकों के द्वारा वचन को उसकी शुद्धता में प्रचार करना और सिखाया जाना था। उस समय नए नियम की पुस्तकें और पत्रियाँ अभी लिखे जा रहे थे, प्रचार और शिक्षा मुख्यतः मौखिक होते थे, और शैतान के लोगों ने भी गलत सिद्धांतों और झूठी शिक्षाओं का प्रचार आरंभ कर दिया था। परन्तु फिर भी पवित्र आत्मा की अगुवाई और सामर्थ्य से बाँटे गए परमेश्वर के परिशुद्ध वचन ने अद्भुत और अकल्पनीय रीति से अपना कार्य किया (यशायाह 55:11)।

    बाइबल हमें बताती है कि कलीसिया की बढ़ोतरी का मुख्य कारण परमेश्वर का वचन है। परमेश्वर अपने वचन में होकर विश्वासियों से बात करता है, उनका मार्गदर्शन करता है। बाइबल में दिखाया गया नमूना है कि यदि मण्डली में परमेश्वर के वचन की सेवकाई सही है, तो कलीसिया की बढ़ोतरी और उन्नति भी होगी। जहाँ परमेश्वर का वचन पनपता है, वहाँ परमेश्वर के लोग भी पनपते हैं। यदि लोगों को परमेश्वर के वचन का उचित पोषण नहीं मिलेगा, वह चाहे उन लोगों की अपनी कमियों-कमजोरियों के कारण हो (1 कुरिन्थियों 3:1-13; इब्रानियों 5:12), या परमेश्वर के वचन के सेवकों में कोई कमियों-कमजोरियों के कारण हो, तो विश्वासियों की, तथा साथ ही कलीसिया की भी परिपक्वता और बढ़ोतरी की हानि होगी। इसे हम पवित्र आत्मा द्वारा पौलुस में होकर तीमुथियुस को दी गई चेतावनी में देखते हैं (2 तीमुथियुस 2:14-17), जहाँ पौलुस तीमुथियुस को लिखता है कि परमेश्वर के वचन का सही उपयोग न करना लज्जा, अभक्ति, अशुद्ध बकवाद का कारण हो जाता है, ऐसे सन्देश सड़े-घाव के समान फैलते चले जाते हैं और सुनने वालों की हानि का कारण हो जाते हैं (साथ ही 1 तीमुथियुस 6:20 और तीतुस 3:9 भी देखिए)। 

    इसके विपरीत, परमेश्वर के वचन का उपयोग उपदेश देने, समझाने, सुधारने, और धर्म की शिक्षा के लिए करने के द्वारा परमेश्वर के जन सिद्ध बनते हैं और हर एक भले काम के लिए तत्पर हो जाते हैं (2 तीमुथियुस 3:16-17)। इसीलिए पौलुस ने इफिसुस के मसीहियों से अपने विदाई संदेश में उन्हें बल देकर स्मरण कराया कि उसने उन्हें सब कुछ सिखाया और परमेश्वर की सम्पूर्ण मनसा उन्हें सिखाने से बिल्कुल नहीं झिझका (प्रेरितों 20:20-27)। झूठी शिक्षाओं और गलत सिद्धांतों के प्रचार और पालन के लिए शैतान और उसके दूत मुख्यतः तीन आधारभूत बातों को बिगाड़ कर, भ्रष्ट कर के सिखाते हैं – वे किसी दूसरे ही यीशु का प्रचार करते हैं, किसी भिन्न और ही आत्मा की बातें करते हैं जो प्रत्येक नया-जन्म पाए हुए विश्वासियों को दिए गए पवित्र आत्मा की बातों से भिन्न होती हैं, या कोई अलग ही सुसमाचार सिखाते हैं (2 कुरिन्थियों 11:3-4)।

    इसलिए, परमेश्वर से बढ़ोतरी (कुलुस्सियों 2:9) का न मिलना, इस बात का संकेत है कि कलीसिया में परमेश्वर के वचन को लेने और देने में कोई गड़बड़ी है। जैसे कि मानव-शरीर में, वैसे ही कलीसिया में यह बढ़ोतरी और उन्नति सही वचन – परमेश्वर के वचन के पर्याप्त और नियमित पोषण के मिलते रहने से होती है। इसलिए यदि कलीसिया की उन्नति नहीं हो रही है, तो दूध-पीने वाले बच्चे की बढ़ोतरी न होने के समान, दूध में कोई कमी है, अर्थात उस कलीसिया में परमेश्वर के वचन की सेवकाई में कुछ कमी है। यह कमी दो तरह से हो सकती है, और उन दोनों में से कोई एक, अथवा दोनों ही कार्यकारी हो सकती हैं। वह “दूध,” अर्थात परमेश्वर का वचन, या तो मात्रा में कम हो सकता है, अथवा गुणवत्ता में कम हो सकता है, या ये दोनों ही बातें एक साथ होना भी संभव है। मुख्यतः, यह इस बात का सूचक है कि जिन्हें वचन की सेवकाई सौंपी गई है, या तो उनके जीवन में कोई समस्या है जिसके कारण वे परमेश्वर के साथ सही और उचित संपर्क रख कर उस से वचन को प्राप्त नहीं करने पा रहे हैं; या वे प्रभु के साथ पर्याप्त समय नहीं बिता रहे हैं कि उस से उसका वचन उन्हें मिल सके; या फिर वे अपने संदेशों को परमेश्वर के वचन में मनुष्य की बातों की मिलावट के द्वारा बना रहे हैं, और ये मिलावट की बातें उनकी स्वयं की धारणाएं हो सकती हैं अथवा किसी अन्य मनुष्य की धारणाओं से ली गई बातें हो सकती हैं। यदि वचन के सेवक परमेश्वर के वचन में मनुष्य की बातों से मिलावट कर रहे हैं, तो फिर उनके द्वारा सिखाए गए, प्रचार किए गए, सुनाए गए संदेश चाहे कितने भी भक्तिपूर्ण, सुनने में अच्छे, और रोचक क्यों न हों, लेकिन उनमें इब्रानियों 4:12 को पूरा करने और लोगों में परिवर्तन लाने वाली परमेश्वर की सामर्थ्य कभी नहीं होगी; उन से कोई उन्नति अथवा बढ़ोतरी नहीं होगी।

    हम अगले लेख में भी इन आरम्भिक बातों को देखना ज़ारी रखेंगे।

    यदि आपने प्रभु की शिष्यता को अभी तक स्वीकार नहीं किया है, तो अपने अनन्त जीवन और स्वर्गीय आशीषों को सुनिश्चित करने के लिए अभी प्रभु यीशु के पक्ष में अपना निर्णय कर लीजिए। जहाँ प्रभु की आज्ञाकारिता है, उसके वचन की बातों का आदर और पालन है, वहाँ प्रभु की आशीष और सुरक्षा भी है। स्वेच्छा से अपने पापों के लिये पश्चाताप करके और प्रभु यीशु से अपने पापों के लिए क्षमा माँगकर, स्वेच्छा से तथा सच्चे मन से अपने आप को उसकी अधीनता में समर्पित कर दीजिए - उद्धार और स्वर्गीय जीवन का यही एकमात्र मार्ग है। आपको स्वेच्छा और सच्चे मन से प्रभु यीशु मसीह से केवल एक छोटी प्रार्थना करनी है, और साथ ही अपना जीवन उसे पूर्णतः समर्पित करना है। आप यह प्रार्थना और समर्पण कुछ इस प्रकार से भी कर सकते हैं, “प्रभु यीशु, मैं अपने पापों के लिए पश्चातापी हूँ, उनके लिए आप से क्षमा माँगता हूँ। मैं आपका धन्यवाद करता हूँ कि आपने मेरे पापों की क्षमा और समाधान के लिए उन पापों को अपने ऊपर लिया, उनके कारण मेरे स्थान पर क्रूस की मृत्यु सही, गाड़े गए, और मेरे उद्धार के लिए आप तीसरे दिन जी भी उठे, और आज जीवित प्रभु परमेश्वर हैं। कृपया मुझे और मेरे पापों को क्षमा करें, मुझे अपनी शरण में लें, और मुझे अपना शिष्य बना लें। मैं अपना जीवन आप के हाथों में समर्पित करता हूँ।” सच्चे और समर्पित मन से की गई आपकी एक प्रार्थना आपके वर्तमान तथा भविष्य को, इस लोक के और परलोक के जीवन को, अनन्तकाल के लिए स्वर्गीय एवं आशीषित बना देगी।

Preliminary Considerations – 2

 

    Since the previous article we have begun a new series from God’s Word, the Bible – learning about growth in the Church and Christian life through God’s Word. We had seen in the last article that the rapid growth and establishment of Christianity in the first century was predominantly due to God’s Word being preached and taught in its purity by the Apostles and ministers of the Lord. Although the books and letters of the New Testament were still being written, the preaching and teaching was mainly in the oral form, and messengers of Satan had begun to preach and teach false doctrines and wrong teachings. Still, the pure Word of God, when it was shared under the guidance and through the power of the Holy Spirit, worked in an unimaginable and wonderful manner (Isaiah 55:11). 

The Bible tells us that the primary means of Church growth is God's Word. God speaks to the Believers and guides them through His Word. The Biblical pattern is that if the ministry of God's Word is proper, then Church growth and edification will occur. Where God's Word grows, God's people also grow. If the people do not receive the proper nourishment of the Word of God, whether due to the people’s own deficiencies (1 Corinthians 3:1-3; Hebrews 5:12), or due to deficiencies in the ministers of God’s Word, then the spiritual growth and maturity of the Believers, as well as the Church will suffer. This is seen in Paul’s warning to Timothy through the Holy Spirit (2 Timothy 2:14-17), where Paul writes to Timothy that not rightly dividing the Word of God is like profanity, idle babblings, that promote ungodliness, and such messages spread like cancer, ruining the hearers (also see 1 Timothy 6:20; Titus 3:9). 

On the other hand, using God’s Word for teaching, reproof, correction, and instructions in righteousness causes the man of God to be complete and thoroughly equipped for every good work (2 Timothy 3:16-17). That is why Paul in his farewell address to the Ephesian Believers, emphatically reminded them that he made it a point to teach the whole counsel of God to them (Acts 20:20, 27). To preach and teach wrong doctrines and false teachings, Satan and his messengers corrupt and adulterate three basic doctrinal things – they preach about some other Jesus, they speak of things pertaining to a spirit different from the things of the Holy Spirit who has been given to every Born-Again Christian Believer, they teach a different gospel (2 Corinthians 11:3-4).

Therefore, the increase from God (Colossians 2:19) not coming would imply there is something wrong in the Church receiving and/or serving God's Word. This growth, as for the human body, happens through the Church receiving the proper, regular, and adequate nourishment of the Word - God's Word. So, if the Church is not growing, then taking an analogy from a milk-fed child's growth, there is a deficiency in the milk, i.e., the Word of God in that Church. This can be in two forms, and either one, or both may be the operative reason for this deficiency. The 'Milk,' i.e., God’s Word is either deficient in quantity, or it is deficient in quality, or in both. Primarily it indicates that those entrusted with the Word ministry either have some problem in their own lives, therefore are not able to connect with God and receive His Word from Him; or, they are not spending adequate time with the Lord to receive the Word from Him; or they are making up their messages by adulterating God’s Word with man's word - which is either from their own concepts, or from concepts that have been borrowed from someone else. If the ministers of the Word are adulterating God’s Word with man’s words, then although what they say, preach, and teach may sound pious, nice, and interesting, it will never have the power of God to fulfil Hebrews 4:12 and transform others.

We will continue to look at some more preliminary considerations in the next article as well.

You can also make this prayer and submission in words something like, “Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sins and repent of them. I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself, paying for them through your life. Because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, and you rose again from the grave on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God and have freely provided to me the forgiveness, and redemption from my sins, through faith in you. Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.

कलीसिया का भण्डारीपन -

    हम देख चुके हैं कि प्रत्येक नया-जन्म पाया हुआ मसीही विश्वासी परमेश्वर के लिए, परमेश्वर के द्वारा उसे दिए गए प्रावधानों और विशेषाधिकारों का भण्डारी भी है। इसलिए प्रत्येक विश्वासी को परमेश्वर ने जो उसे सौंपा है, उसके बारे में सीखना और जानना चाहिए, ताकि भण्डारी होने की अपनी जिम्मेदारियों को योग्य रीति से पूरा कर सके। इस सन्दर्भ में हमने मत्ती 16:18 से परमेश्वर की कलीसिया जहाँ परमेश्वर ने विश्वासी को रखा है तथा परमेश्वर के अन्य बच्चों के साथ सहभागिता रखने के बारे में सीखा है, और अब उस सीखे हुए के व्यावहारिक निहितार्थों पर विचार कर रहे हैं। पिछले लेख में हमने देखा था कि विश्वासी के जीवन में तथा कलीसिया में भी उन्नति एवं बढ़ोतरी होते रहना अनिवार्य है; और कलीसिया में बढ़ोतरी तभी होगी जब कलीसिया के सदस्य अपने आत्मिक जीवनों में उन्नति करेंगे। आज से हम उन कारणों को देखना आरम्भ करेंगे जो इस उन्नति और बढ़ोतरी में बाधा बनते हैं, विश्वासी के जीवन में तथा कलीसिया में भी।

    यदि कलीसिया उन्नति नहीं कर रही है, या उचित रीति से उन्नति नहीं कर रही है, तो इसका अर्थ है कि उसके सदस्य परमेश्वर का भण्डारी होने की अपनी ज़िम्मेदारियाँ पूरी नहीं कर रहे हैं, और उनके मसीही जीवनों में कोई गम्भीर गड़बड़ी है। यह बढ़ोतरी न होना विश्वासियों के जीवनों के विभिन्न पक्षों में कमियाँ होने के कारण हो सकती है।

1. जिम्मेदारियों का निर्वाह करने में कमी:

    हमने पिछले लेख में देखा है कि परमेश्वर द्वारा कलीसिया को बढ़ाने के लिए, प्रत्येक विश्वासी को परमेश्वर द्वारा उसके लिये निर्धारित कार्य को करना होगा, अपनी भूमिका का निर्वाह करना पड़ेगा (इफिसियों 4:16)। बहुधा यह मान लिया जाता है कि कलीसिया या मण्डली की सारी ज़िम्मेदारी पास्टरों, अगुवों, कमेटी के सदस्यों, तथा जो वचन की सेवकाई में लगे हैं, केवल उन्हीं की है। इन्हें ही कलीसिया से सम्बन्धित काम में लगे रहना है, जबकि शेष लोग आराम से बैठ सकते हैं। लेकिन जैसे हमने कलीसिया के लिए उपयोग किए गए रूपकों से तथा परमेश्वर के वचन के कुछ अन्य हवालों से सीखा था, परमेश्वर ने प्रत्येक विश्वासी को कोई न कोई काम दिया है (इफिसियों 2:10), और उसी काम के अनुसार प्रत्येक विश्वासी को पवित्र आत्मा का कोई न कोई वरदान भी दिया गया है। यह कोई साधारण सा लगने वाला काम भी हो सकता है, जैसे फीबे कलीसिया में रख-रखाव करने वाली सेविका थी (रोमियों 16:1)। यह कलीसिया के बाहर, मण्डली के लोगों के मध्य भी हो सकता है, जैसे कि तबिता (दोरकास) की सेवकाई थी, जिसके बारे में प्रेरितों 9:36-42 में लिखा है। इस स्त्री ने कोई सन्देश प्रचार नहीं किए अथवा सिखाए, परन्तु उसका जीवन ही एक जीवित सन्देश था। परमेश्वर का वचन उसके विषय गवाही देता है कि, “...वह बहुतेरे भले भले काम और दान किया करती थी” (प्रेरितों 9:36), और उसके इन कामों में से एक था कुरते और कपड़े बनाना (प्रेरितों 9:39। उसकी इस साधारण सी सेवकाई ने ही उसे अपने चारों के लोगों में इतना प्रिय बना दिया था कि उसकी मृत्यु होने पर उन लोगों ने तुरन्त पतरस को बुलाया, और परमेश्वर ने पतरस में होकर काम किया, उसे जिला उठाया (प्रेरितों 9:38-41), और उसकी मृत्यु तथा जिलाए जाने से बहुत से लोगों ने प्रभु यीशु में विश्वास किया (प्रेरितों 9:42)।

    जैसे-जैसे विश्वासी अपनी जिम्मेदारियों को योग्य रीति से निभाता है, वह प्रभु में बढ़ता जाता है; और कलीसिया के सदस्यों के इन जिम्मेदारियों के सामूहिक निर्वाह के द्वारा कलीसिया की उन्नति होती है। यदि सदस्य परमेश्वर द्वारा उसके लिये निर्धारित जिम्मेदारियों से अवगत ही न हों, और किसी भी कारण से, उन्हें निभा ही नहीं रहे हों, तब न तो उनकी और न ही कलीसिया की कोई बढ़ोतरी अथवा उन्नति होने पाएगी। बहुधा लोग अपनी इच्छा के अनुसार और/या कलीसिया के अगुवों के कहे के अनुसार करने को ही परमेश्वर के लिये किया गया कार्य समझ लेते हैं; जो सच नहीं है। इसे दाऊद द्वारा परमेश्वर के लिये भवन बनाने की लालसा, और परमेश्वर के नबी, नातान के भी उसके साथ सहमत होने, किन्तु परमेश्वर द्वारा इसका इनकार करके, दाऊद के पुत्र सुलैमान द्वारा मन्दिर बनवाने के उदाहरण से समझिए (2 शमूएल 7:1-5; 1 इतिहास 28:7-10)। इसलिए, सभी को प्रार्थना करके परमेश्वर से पता करना चाहिए कि उनकी परमेश्वर द्वारा निर्धारित सेवकाई और कलीसिया में ज़िम्मेदारियाँ क्या हैं, और फिर एक प्रयास के साथ उन्हें निभाने का यत्न करना चाहिए।

2. परमेश्वर के वचन को अपने अन्दर लेना:

    अगले लेख में हम यहाँ से और आगे बढ़ेंगे तथा कमियों के दो और कारणों को देखेंगे जो विश्वासियों और कलीसिया की आत्मिक बढ़ोतरी तथा उन्नति में बाधा बनती हैं।

Church Stewardship - Practical Implications – 5

 

    We have seen that every Born-Again Christian Believer is also a steward of God for the provisions and privileges given to him by God. Therefore, every Believer should learn and know about all that God has entrusted him with, to worthily fulfil his stewardship responsibilities. In this context, having learnt from Matthew 16:18 about the Church of God and about being in fellowship with God’s other children, where God has placed the Believer, we are now considering the practical implications of what we have learnt. In the last article we had seen that growth of the Church as well as of Believer’s spiritual life is essential; and that the Church will grow when the Believers, the members of the Church grow in their spiritual lives. Today we will start considering the causes that obstruct this growth, of the Believer, as well as of the Church.

    If a Church is not growing, or not growing adequately, that means its members are not fulfilling their responsibilities as God’s stewards, and that there is something seriously wrong in their Christian lives. This lack of growth can be due to deficiencies in various aspects in the lives of the Believers.

1. Deficiency in fulfilling responsibilities:

    We have seen in the last article, for God to grow the Church, every Believer must do the work assigned to him by God, and must fulfill his responsibility (Ephesians 4:16). It is often assumed that all responsibility of the Church or the Assembly rests only with the Pastors, Elders, the committee members, and those engaged in ministering the Word of God. Only they need to be engaged in the works related to the Church, the rest of the congregation can sit back and let these people do the work. But as we have seen from the metaphors used for the Church and other references from God’s Word, God has given some work or the other, to every Believer (Ephesians 2:10), and some gift of the Holy Spirit to every Believer in accordance with the work assigned to him. This can even be a seemingly ordinary work, e.g., like Phoebe, who was a servant in the Church. It may even be outside the Church, amongst the congregation, as was the ministry of Tabitha (Dorcas) in the first Church; written in Acts 9:36-42. This lady did not preach or teach any sermons, but her life was a living sermon. God’s Word testifies for her that “…This woman was full of good works and charitable deeds which she did” (Acts 9:36), and one of her works was making tunics and garments for others (Acts 9:39). This simple ministry had so endeared her to the people around her that after her death they sent for Peter, and God worked through Peter to bring her back to life (Acts 9:38-41), and then her death and coming back to life brought many others to faith in the Lord Jesus (Acts 9:42).

    As the Believer fulfils his responsibilities worthily, he grows in the Lord; and it is the collective fulfilment of these responsibilities by the members of the Church, that results in the growth of the Church. If the members are not aware of their God assigned responsibilities, and are not carrying them out due to whatever reasons, then there will be no growth, neither their own, nor of the Church. Very often people do things according to their own desires, and/or as instructed by the Elders of the Church, and think that they have done God’s Work; which is not true. Understand this from the example of David’s desire to build God’s Temple, and God’s prophet Nathan’s approval for it; but God rejected it, and had David’s son Solomon build it (2 Samuel 7:1-5; 1 Chronicles 28:7-10). Therefore, everyone should pray and ask God to show them their God assigned ministry and their responsibilities in the Church, and then strive diligently to fulfill them. 

2. Deficiency in feeding on the Word of God:

    As we have seen in the earlier articles, the Bible tells us that the primary means of Church growth is God's Word. God speaks to the Believers and guides them through His Word. The Biblically demonstrated pattern is that if the ministry of God's Word is proper, then Church growth will happen. Where God's Word grows, God's people also grow. If the people do not receive the proper nourishment of the Word of God, whether due to their own deficiencies (1 Corinthians 3:1-3; Hebrews 5:12), or due to personal deficiencies in the ministers of God’s Word, then the spiritual growth and maturity of the Believers, as well as the Church will suffer. This is seen in Paul’s warning to Timothy through the Holy Spirit (2 Timothy 2:14-17), where Paul writes to Timothy that not rightly dividing the Word of God is like profanity, idle babblings, that promote ungodliness, and such messages spread like cancer, ruining the hearers (also see 1 Timothy 6:20; Titus 3:9).

    Therefore, the increase from God (Colossians 2:19) not coming would imply there is something wrong in the Church receiving and/or sharing God's Word. As is true for the human body, spiritual growth too happens when the Church receives proper, regular, and adequate nourishment of the Word - God's Word. So, if the Church is not growing, then taking an analogy from a milk-fed child's growth, there is a deficiency in the milk, i.e., the Word of God in that Church.

    This can be in two forms, and either one, or both forms may be the operative reason for this deficiency. The 'Milk,' i.e., God’s Word is either deficient in quantity, or it is deficient in quality, or in both. Primarily it indicates that those entrusted with the Word ministry, either have some problem in their own lives, and therefore they are not able to connect with God and receive His Word from Him; or, they are not spending adequate time with the Lord to receive the required Word from Him; or they are making up their own messages by adulterating God’s Word with man's word - either their own, or borrowed from someone else. If the ministers are adulterating God’s Word with man’s words, then although what they say, preach, and teach may sound pious, nice, and interesting, but it will never have the power of God to fulfill Hebrews 4:12 and transform others.

    We will carry on from here in the next article and look at two more deficiencies that obstruct the spiritual growth of Believers and the growth of the Church.

Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Repenting of your sins, and asking the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely, surrendering yourself to Him - is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. You only have to say a short but sincere prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ willingly and with a penitent heart, and at the same time completely commit and submit your life to Him. You can also make this prayer and submission in words something like, “Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sins and repent of them. I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself, paying for them through your life.  Because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, and you rose again from the grave on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God and have freely provided to me the forgiveness, and redemption from my sins, through faith in you. Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.

राजा दाऊद ने, 1 राजाओं 2:2-4 में अपने युवा और अनुभवहीन पुत्र, सुलैमान को, जिसे हाल ही में इस्राएल का राजा बनाया गया है, परमेश्वर की आज्ञाकारिता और मार्गदर्शन में रहने के द्वारा एक सफल और आशीषित जीवन जीने के लिए निर्देश दिए हैं। यह मसीही विश्वासियों के लिए भी है, जिन्होंने मसीह के संगी वारिस (रोमियों 8:17) और परमेश्वर की सन्तान के रूप में (यूहन्ना 1:12-13), परमेश्वर के राज्य में नया जन्म पाया है। इन तीन पदों में चार निर्देश दिए गए हैं, जो तब सुलैमान के लिए थे, और आज हमारे लिए हैं। पहला निर्देश है कि पुरुषार्थ कर और दृढ़ निश्चय तथा कठिन परिश्रम के साथ परमेश्वर की सेवा कर। दूसरा निर्देश है कि परमेश्वर का एक भला अर्थात योग्य भण्डारी बन। पिछले लेख में हमने पुनःअवलोकन किया था कि उद्धार एवं मसीही जीवन जीने के लिए परमेश्वर के प्रावधानों को प्राप्त करने के साथ ही उन प्रावधानों का भण्डारी होने की ज़िम्मेदारी भी मिल जाती है; और साथ ही यह भी देखा था कि लोग किन कारणों से भले भण्डारी नहीं बनने पाते हैं। हमने यह भी देखा है कि परमेश्वर ने अपनी प्रत्येक सन्तान, नया-जन्म पाए हुए मसीही विश्वासी को न केवल उद्धार दिया है, वरन साथ ही कम से कम चार और भी बातें दी हैं; ये चार बातें हैं:

• उसका वचन

• उसका पवित्र आत्मा

• उसकी कलीसिया तथा उसकी अन्य संतानों की संगति

• सेवकाई के लिए पवित्र आत्मा का कोई न कोई वरदान

आज हम भण्डारी होने के बारे में इस पुनःअवलोकन को ज़ारी रखेंगे, और हमने जो परमेश्वर के वचन का भण्डारी होने के बारे में सीखा है, उसे देखेंगे।

2a. परमेश्वर ने जो कुछ प्रदान किया है, उसके योग्य भण्डारी बनो:

बाइबल, जो हमारे हाथों में दिया गया परमेश्वर का लिखित वचन है, वही वचन है जो देहधारी हुआ, और जिसने प्रभु यीशु के रूप में हमारे बीच में डेरा किया (यूहन्ना 1:1-2, 14)। परमेश्वर का वचन सम्पूर्ण, सिद्ध, अचूक, त्रुटि रहित, और स्वर्ग में अनन्तकाल के लिए स्थापित है (भजन 119:89, 160)। उस में कभी भी कुछ भी नहीं जोड़ा जाएगा, और न ही कभी उस में से कुछ निकाला जाएगा, किसी के भी द्वारा नहीं। उसे कभी न तो सुधारा जा सकता है न ही और बेहतर बनाया जा सकता है, क्योंकि इसका तात्पर्य होगा कि परमेश्वर पुत्र - प्रभु यीशु मसीह में कुछ सुधारने या बेहतर बनाने के लिये उसमें कुछ जड़ना या उसमें से कुछ घटाना। जैसा हम आगे देखेंगे, परमेश्वर पवित्र आत्मा भी, जिसकी प्रेरणा और मार्गदर्शन में बाइबल लिखी गई है, वह भी कभी भी न तो उसमें कुछ जोड़ता है और न उसमें से कुछ घटाता है, वरन उसने जो और जैसा लिखवा दिया है उसे वैसा ही उपयोग करता और करवाता है। इसीलिए बाइबल में यह निर्देश दिया गया है कि उसमें जो लिख दिया गया है, उस में न तो कभी कुछ जोड़ें और न ही उसमें से कभी कुछ निकालें, अन्यथा गंभीर परिणाम भोगने पड़ेंगे (व्यवस्थाविवरण 4:2; नीतिवचन 30:6; प्रकाशितवाक्य 22:18-19। इसलिए मसीही विश्वासियों को हमेशा इस बात का ध्यान रखना चाहिए कि वे परमेश्वर के वचन का दुरुपयोग न करें, अपनी ही समझ और धारणाओं के अनुसार वचन की कोई गलत व्याख्या न करें, उसमें न तो कुछ जोड़ें और न ही कुछ घटाएं, और किसी भी अन्य के द्वारा ऐसा किये जाने को भी स्वीकार न करें - ऐसा करने वाला चाहे कोई भी क्यों न हो (गलातियों 1:8-9)।

एक और बात जिसका ध्यान रखना चाहिए वह है, उसे आकर्षक बनाने के लिए, या किसी विशेष विचार अथवा धारणा के साथ सुसंगत दिखाने के लिए, बाइबल के प्रचारकों और शिक्षकों को ऐसा कुछ भी नहीं कहना और सिखाना चाहिए जो बाइबल के लेख में वास्तव में नहीं लिखा गया है। जैसा पौलुस कहता है, उन्हें कभी भी लिखित वचन से आगे नहीं बढ़ना चाहिए (1 कुरिन्थियों 4:6)। शैतान अपना यथासंभव प्रयास करता है कि परमेश्वर के वचन में मिलावट हो जाए, क्योंकि वह जानता है कि जब भी परमेश्वर के वचन में मानवीय बुद्धि और ज्ञान के विचारों की बातों की मिलावट होगी, वचन का सन्देश अप्रभावी हो जाएगा (1 कुरिन्थियों 1:17)। इसलिए शैतान यह कार्य जानबूझकर कैसे न कैसे करवाने का प्रयास करता रहता है, या तो उसके द्वारा फैलाए गए उसके दूतों के द्वारा (2 कुरिन्थियों 11:3, 13-15); या  फिर परमेश्वर के समर्पित विश्वासियों के द्वारा, जिन्हें बहका और भरमा कर, जिनका दुरुपयोग करने के द्वारा वह अपनी गलत शिक्षाएँ वचन में मिला देता है, फैला देता है। शैतान विश्वासियों को भी यह भरोसा दिला देता है कि जो वे मान रहे हैं, कह रहे हैं, सिखा रहे हैं वह परमेश्वर का सही वचन है; किन्तु वास्तव में वह उन्हें वचन की गलत व्याख्या, गलत व्यवहारिक उपयोग, और गलत समझ में फंसा देता है; उनकी बात बाइबल से तो हो सकती है, किन्तु बाइबल के अनुसार सही नहीं होती है।

हम यह कैसे समझ और पहचान सकते हैं कि जो प्रचार किया और सिखाया जा रहा है, वह बाइबल के अनुसार सही है? सबसे पहले तो इस धारणा से बाहर निकलना होगा कि जिस प्रचारक और शिक्षक की एक साख, एक प्रसिद्धि है, जिसका बहुत मान है, जिसके बहुत अनुयायी हैं, वह कभी गलत नहीं हो सकता है, और उसकी हर बात पर अँध-विश्वास किया जा सकता है। दूसरे, दी जा रही शिक्षा को बाइबल से ही जाँचना और देखना चाहिए कि कहीं वह किसी प्रकार से लिखे हुए वचन से आगे बढ़ा कर कही गई बात तो नहीं है? क्या उस बात के अर्थ, अभिप्राय, और उपयोग बाइबल में भी वैसे ही हैं, जैसे कि प्रचारक और शिक्षक बता एवं सिखा रहा है? क्या बाइबल में वे अर्थ, अभिप्राय, उपयोग सिखाए गए हैं कि नहीं; या कहीं वह प्रचारक कुछ बाइबल से भिन्न बात तो नहीं सिखा रहा है? और तीसरा यह देखना चाहिए कि उन अर्थ, अभिप्राय, और उपयोग के साथ वह बात बाइबल में भी उपयोग की गई है कि नहीं, कोई वैसा उदाहरण है कि नहीं, या वह शिक्षा बाइबल से बाहर की बात है? जिस भी शिक्षा में ये बातें नहीं हैं, वह बाइबल के अनुसार सही नहीं है, और उसे स्वीकार नहीं किया जाना चाहिए; चाहे उसका प्रचार करने और सिखाने वाला कोई भी क्यों न हो।

Recapitulation – 3

King David, in 1 Kings 2:2-4 has instructed his young and inexperienced son Solomon, recently crowned as King of Israel, about leading a blessed and successful life, by being obedient to God and working under God’s guidance. This also applies to the Christian Believers, Born-Again into the Kingdom of God, as His children (John 1:12-13), and co-heirs with Christ (Romans 8:17). In these three verses, there are four instructions that were for Solomon then, and for us now. The first instruction is to be a man and strive resolutely to obey and serve God. The second instruction is to be a good or worthy steward of God. In the previous article we recapitulated about how the responsibility of being a steward comes as part of being saved and receiving God’s provisions for living a Christian life; and also saw what makes people poor stewards. We saw earlier that to every one of His children, the Born-Again Christian Believers, God has not only given salvation, but has also given at least four other things; these things are:

• His Word

• His Holy Spirit

• His Church and Fellowship of His Children

• Some Gift of the Holy Spirit for our ministry

Today we will continue recapitulating further about stewardship, and see what we had learnt about the Believer’s stewardship of God’s Word.

2a. Be a good Steward of God’s Word:

The Bible, the written Word of God that we have in our hands, is the same Word that became flesh, and dwelt amongst us (John 1:1-2, 14) as the Lord Jesus. The Word of God is complete, perfect, infallible, inerrant, and forever settled in heaven (Psalm 119:89, 160). Nothing will ever be added to it, in any form, by anyone and nothing can be taken away from it. It cannot ever be modified or improved upon by anyone, since that would imply adding to or taking away from the Lord Jesus to modify or improve Him - God - the Son. As we will see subsequently, God the Holy Spirit, under whose inspiration and guidance the Bible has been written, He also neither adds nor takes away anything from what He has had written, but uses it just as it is. Therefore, it has been instructed in the Bible not to add or take anything away from what already has been given in God’s Word; else there will be serious consequences (Deuteronomy 4:2; Proverbs 30:6; Revelation 22:18-19). Therefore, Christian Believers must be careful to not misuse, misinterpret, and add or remove things to God’s Word in any manner, for whatever reasons, according to their own concepts and understanding; neither should they accept any such thing being done by others - no matter who that person may be (Galatians 1:8-9).

Another thing to bear in mind is that to make it sound attractive, or seemingly consistent with a particular thought or idea, Bible preachers and teachers should not make the Word appear to say things that the Bible does not actually say in its given text. As Paul says, they should make it a point to never ever go beyond the written Word (1 Corinthians 4:6). Satan tries his utmost to make people adulterate God’s Word, since he knows that the Word of God when adulterated with things of human wisdom, its message loses its efficacy (1 Corinthians 1:17). Satan gets this done either deliberately through his planted agents (2 Corinthians 11:3, 13-15); or through misleading and misusing God’s committed Believers engaged in the ministry of God’s Word. Satan gets them to misunderstand, misinterpret, believe, preach, and teach things that may appear to be from God’s Word, but actually are not true from the Biblical sense.

How can we discern and understand whether what is being preached and taught is Biblical or not? The first thing to do is to come out of the assumption that the preacher and teacher who is well-reputed, is well-known and famous, is highly acclaimed, has a large following, he can never be wrong, so whatever he says can be blindly believed upon and accepted as it is. Secondly, the teaching being given should be examined through the Bible to see if it in any way is going beyond the written Word? Secondly, the meanings, implications, and practical uses of that teaching whether or not they have been taught in the Bible just the same as the preacher and teacher is saying? Or, is the preacher saying something different from what has been given in the Bible? And thirdly, it should be checked whether that teaching has been used in the Bible with the meanings, implications, and practical uses as is being preached and taught; i.e., are there any examples in the Bible of its use in the same way as is being preached and taught? Any teaching that does not fulfill these requirements is not Biblical, should not be accepted; no matter who it is who is preaching and teaching that thing.

In the next article we will recapitulate some Biblical examples of people believing themselves to be sincere and reverent towards God, but actually were contrary to God; and we will also see an example of misuse of God’s Word by Satan, that he keeps getting done even today through Christian Believers.

You only have to say a short but sincere prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ willingly and with a penitent heart, and at the same time completely commit and submit your life to Him. You can also make this prayer and submission in words something like, “Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sins and repent of them. I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself, paying for them through your life.  Because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, and you rose again from the grave on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God and have freely provided to me the forgiveness, and redemption from my sins, through faith in you. Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.

प्रत्येक नया-जन्म पाए हुए मसीही विश्वासी ने, परमेश्वर से अन्य सँसाधनों के साथ, परमेश्वर का पवित्र आत्मा भी प्राप्त किया है; जो उसे उसके उद्धार पाने के पल ही दे दिया जाता है (इफिसियों 1:13-14)। पवित्र आत्मा उस में उसका सहायक, साथी, शिक्षक, और मार्गदर्शक बनकर हमेशा निवास करता है, कि मसीही जीवन जीने और परमेश्वर द्वारा उसे सौंपी गई सेवकाई का निर्वाह करने में सहायता और मार्गदर्शन सके। उसका शिक्षक होने के नाते, पवित्र आत्मा विश्वासियों को परमेश्वर का वचन भी सिखाता है (यूहन्ना 14:26; 16:13), यदि वे उस से सीखने के लिए तैयार हों; बजाए मनुष्यों से सीखने वाले होने के। परमेश्वर के विभिन्न सँसाधनों के भण्डारी होने के नाते, विश्वासियों को पवित्र आत्मा का भी योग्य भण्डारी होने की आवश्यकता है, ताकि उस से सीख सकें और उसकी सेवाओं तथा सामर्थ्य का बाइबल के अनुसार उचित उपयोग कर सकें। अब हम देख रहे हैं कि कैसे विश्वासी पवित्र आत्मा से परमेश्वर का वचन बाइबल सीख सकते हैं। वर्तमान में हम यह 1 पतरस 2:1-2 से सीख रहे हैं, और हमने इस पद से देखा है कि मसीही विश्वासी में ने केवल वचन को सीखने की एक वास्तविक लालसा होनी चाहिए, बल्कि केवल परमेश्वर का निर्मल वचन ही सीखने की उत्कंठा होनी चाहिए। पिछले लेख में हमने उन तरीकों को देखा था जिनके द्वारा शैतान परमेश्वर के वचन में मिलावट करवाता है, और फिर उस मिलावट वाले या मलिन वचन को परमेश्वर के सत्य के समान प्रस्तुत करवाता है। वह यह काम अपने लोगों के द्वारा जान-बूझकर, तथा परमेश्वर के समर्पित विश्वासियों द्वारा अनजाने में करवा देता है, और ये विश्वासी यही सोचते रहते हैं कि वे परमेश्वर की सेवा कर रहे हैं, उसके वचन का प्रसार कर रहे हैं, जबकि वास्तव में वे मिलावट किये हुए वचन को परमेश्वर के सत्य के समान प्रचार कर रहे और सिखा रहे होते हैं। आज से हम देखेंगे कि किस प्रकार से परमेश्वर के समर्पित विश्वासी जो वचन की सेवकाई, वचन के प्रचार और शिक्षा में लगे हुए हैं, वे कैसे अपने आप को तथा औरों को, जिनके मध्य वे सेवकाई करते हैं, शैतान द्वारा लाए गए मिलावटी वचन के कारण गलत शिक्षाओं और झूठे सिद्धान्तों में पड़कर बहकाए और भरमाए जाने से बचाए रख सकते हैं।

परमेश्वर के वचन की सेवकाई में लगे प्रत्येक विश्वासी का यह दायित्व होना चाहिए कि वह जो प्रचार कर रहा और सिखा रहा है, बारंबार उसे जाँचता-परखता रहे, परमेश्वर के वचन से उसकी पुष्टि करता रहे। कभी-कभी यह जाँचना-परखना, उसी सेवकाई में संलग्न अन्य वरिष्ठ सेवकों के द्वारा करवानी चाहिये। परमेश्वर ने प्रेरित पौलुस को यरूशलेम में कलीसिया के अगुवों के पास भेजा, कि उन्हें उस सुसमाचार को बताए जिसका वह प्रचार कर रहा था (गलातियों 2:1-2)। यद्यपि यरूशलेम के अगुवों को न तो उसके प्रचार में कोई त्रुटि मिली, और न ही वे उसे कुछ अतिरिक्त बताया सके (गलातियों 2:6); परन्तु फिर भी परमेश्वर ने पौलुस को उनके पास भेज था कि वे उसे उसके प्रचार के बारे में जाँचे-परखें। शैतान की युक्तियों से सुरक्षित रहने के लिए, यह जाँच-परख करते रहना अनिवार्य है। साथ ही मसीही विश्वासी को कभी लापरवाह नहीं होना चाहिए, और कभी यह नहीं समझ लेना चाहिए कि उस से कभी कोई गलती नहीं होगी (1 कुरिन्थियों 10:12)। परमेश्वर ने अपने वचन में जाँचने-परखने के लिए तीन स्तर की प्रक्रिया दी है, जिस से कि उसके वचन बाइबल और उसकी शिक्षाओं की शुद्धता और यथार्थ बना रह सके।

पहला स्तर है परमेश्वर के वचन के प्रचारक और शिक्षक के द्वारा स्वयं को जाँचते-परखते रहना। परमेश्वर के वचन के प्रचारक और शिक्षक को दो बहुत महत्वपूर्ण बातों का ध्यान रखना चाहिए। इन बातों को पवित्र आत्मा की अगुवाई में प्रेरित पौलुस ने 1 कुरिन्थियों 4:6 में लिखा है, “हे भाइयों, मैं ने इन बातों में तुम्हारे लिये अपनी और अपुल्लोस की चर्चा, दृष्टान्त की रीति पर की है, इसलिये कि तुम हमारे द्वारा यह सीखो, कि लिखे हुए से आगे न बढ़ना, और एक के पक्ष में और दूसरे के विरोध में गर्व न करना” और फिर पौलुस तथा अपुल्लोस के उदाहरण के द्वारा उसके पालन किए जाने पर बल भी दिया है। दूसरे शब्दों में यह उनके द्वारा केवल प्रचार की जाने वाली ही बात नहीं थी, बल्कि उनके जीवनों से एक व्यावहारिक उदाहरण भी था, जो इन दोनों बातों के महत्व को रेखांकित करता है। साथ ही इस पर भी ध्यान दीजिए कि पवित्र आत्मा ने यह केवल उन के लिए ही नहीं कहा है जो वचन की सेवकाई में लगे थे, बल्कि यह ‘भाइयों’ अर्थात समस्त मण्डली से कहा गया है। यह इस बात का संकेत है कि मण्डली को भी प्रचारकों और शिक्षकों पर ध्यान रखना है (1 कुरिन्थियों 14:29), कि कहीं अपनी सेवकाई के दौरान, जाने या अनजाने में वे इन निर्देशों का उल्लंघन तो नहीं कर रहे हैं।

पौलुस 1 कुरिन्थियों 4:6 में जो दूसरी बात कहता है, वह है कभी भी अपने आप को औरों से बढ़कर, या किसी और को अपने से निम्न स्तर का दिखाने का प्रयास न करें। इनमें से कोई भी कार्य करने की प्रवृत्ति घमण्ड के कारण होती हैं, चाहे वह गुप्त और बहुत सूक्ष्म ही क्यों न हो। परमेश्वर को घमण्ड से घृणा है (नीतिवचन 8:13; 16:5; याकूब 4:6); और घमण्ड हमेशा ही पतन लाता है (नीतिवचन 16:18; 29:23)। साथ ही यह एक से बढ़कर दूसरे को देखना या दिखाना, मण्डली के लोगों में प्रभु यीशु मसीह की बजाए मानवीय अगुवों का अनुसरण करने की प्रवृत्ति को लाता है, कलीसिया में गुटों और विभाजन का, और मण्डली के लोगों के अपरिपक्व तथा शारीरिक व्यवहार में बने रहने का भी कारण बनता है, जिस से वे परमेश्वर की गूढ़ बातों को सीख पाने के अयोग्य हो जाते हैं (1 कुरिन्थियों 1:10-13; 3:1-3; 11:18-19)।

इसलिए परमेश्वर के वचन के प्रत्येक प्रचारक और शिक्षक को नियमित रीति से इस स्वयं-आँकलन को करते रहना चाहिए, और यह सुनिश्चित करते रहना चाहिए कि न तो वह किसी ऐसी बात में स्वयं विश्वास करे जो परमेश्वर के वचन में मिलावट करती है, और न ही औरों को ऐसी किसी बात का प्रचार और शिक्षा प्रदान करे। अगले लेख में हम आँकलन के अन्य दो स्तरों के बारे में देखेंगे।

यदि आपने प्रभु की शिष्यता को अभी तक स्वीकार नहीं किया है, तो अपने अनन्त जीवन और स्वर्गीय आशीषों को सुनिश्चित करने के लिए अभी प्रभु यीशु के पक्ष में अपना निर्णय कर लीजिए। जहाँ प्रभु की आज्ञाकारिता है, उसके वचन की बातों का आदर और पालन है, वहाँ प्रभु की आशीष और सुरक्षा भी है। स्वेच्छा से अपने पापों के लिये पश्चाताप करके, प्रभु यीशु से अपने पापों के लिए क्षमा माँगकर, स्वेच्छा से तथा सच्चे मन से अपने आप को उसकी अधीनता में समर्पित कर दीजिए - उद्धार और स्वर्गीय जीवन का यही एकमात्र मार्ग है। आपको स्वेच्छा और सच्चे मन से प्रभु यीशु मसीह से केवल एक छोटी प्रार्थना करनी है, और साथ ही अपना जीवन उसे पूर्णतः समर्पित करना है। आप यह प्रार्थना और समर्पण कुछ इस प्रकार से भी कर सकते हैं, “प्रभु यीशु, मैं अपने पापों के लिए पश्चातापी हूँ, उनके लिए आप से क्षमा माँगता हूँ। मैं आपका धन्यवाद करता हूँ कि आपने मेरे पापों की क्षमा और समाधान के लिए उन पापों को अपने ऊपर लिया, उनके कारण मेरे स्थान पर क्रूस की मृत्यु सही, गाड़े गए, और मेरे उद्धार के लिए आप तीसरे दिन जी भी उठे, और आज जीवित प्रभु परमेश्वर हैं। कृपया मुझे और मेरे पापों को क्षमा करें, मुझे अपनी शरण में लें, और मुझे अपना शिष्य बना लें। मैं अपना जीवन आप के हाथों में समर्पित करता हूँ।” सच्चे और समर्पित मन से की गई आपकी एक प्रार्थना आपके वर्तमान तथा भविष्य को, इस लोक के और परलोक के जीवन को, अनन्तकाल के लिए स्वर्गीय एवं आशीषित बना देगी।

Learning From the Holy Spirit – 14

 

Every Born-Again Christian Believer, along with other provisions from God, has also received God’s Holy Spirit, given to him at the moment of his salvation (Ephesians 1:13-14). The Holy Spirit resides in him as his Helper, Companion, Teacher, and Guide for living his Christian life and fulfilling his God given ministry. As his Teacher, the Holy Spirit teaches God’s Word to the Believers (John 14:26; 16:13), if they are willing to learn from Him; instead of going after learning from men. As stewards of God’s various provisions, the Believers are also to be worthy stewards of the Holy Spirit, to be able to earn God’s Word from Him, and also be able to utilize His power and services properly in their lives and ministry, in the intended Biblical manner. Presently we are learning from 1 Peter 2:1-2, how the Believers should learn God’s Word, the Bible from Him. We have seen from this verse that the Believer must not only have a sincere desire to learn, but also to learn only the pure, i.e., unadulterated Word of God. In the previous article we have seen the ways Satan gets God’s Word adulterated, and then has that adulterated or impure Word presented as God’s truth. Satan gets this done by his own agents who deliberately do this; as well as by God’s committed Believers, who do this unknowingly, all the while believing they are serving God and propagating His Word, while actually preaching and teaching the adulterated word as God’s truth. From today we will see how God’s committed Believers engaged in the ministry of preaching and teaching God’s Word, can keep themselves, and thereby others amongst whom they minister, safe from being beguiled and misled by Satan into false teachings and wrong doctrines through the adulterated Word of God.

It should be the duty of every Believer engaged in the ministry of God’s Word to rigorously keep cross-checking all that he preaches and teaches and keep affirming it from God’s Word from time to time. Sometimes, this cross-checking needs to be done through other senior persons engaged in similar ministry. God sent the Apostle Paul to the Church Elders in Jerusalem, to communicate to them the gospel he was preaching (Galatians 2:1-2). Though the Elders in Jerusalem did not find any short-comings, nor added anything to what Paul was preaching (Galatians 2:6); yet God had sent Paul to them to be evaluated for his preaching. Doing this is mandatory, as a safeguard against the wiles of the devil. Moreover, the Christian Believer should never become complacent and never assume that he will never commit any errors (1 Corinthians 10:12). God in His Word has provided a three-stage cross-checking to check and maintain the purity and factualness of His Word the Bible while preaching and teaching from it.

The first level is self-evaluation by the preacher or teacher of God’s Word. The preacher and teacher of God’s Word should take care of two very important things. These things the Holy Spirit through Paul has stated in 1 Corinthians 4:6, “Now these things, brethren, I have figuratively transferred to myself and Apollos for your sakes, that you may learn in us not to think beyond what is written, that none of you may be puffed up on behalf of one against the other;” and has emphasized that they must be emulated, through the example of Paul and Apollos. In other words, it was not merely a preaching on their part, but a practical demonstration from their lives, which underscores the importance of these two things. Also note that the Holy Spirit has addressed this instruction not only to those engaged in ministering the Word, but to the ‘brethren,’ i.e., the whole congregation. This is indicative that the whole congregation too must keep an eye on the preachers and teachers (1 Corinthians 14:29), that they do not transgress these instructions regarding their ministry, knowingly or unknowingly.

As emphasized in the quoted verse above, the Apostle Paul under the guidance of the Holy Spirit is writing two essential principles that preachers and teachers of God’s Word must adhere to. The first is, that as Paul and Apollos were careful to do, no one should even think beyond what has already been written in the Scriptures, let alone preach or teach anything outside of God’s written Word. God’s Word teaches that God is very particular about adherence to His instructions and not going beyond them in any manner. He has never permitted any addition or deletion from His Word, nor taken lightly if any does the same (Deuteronomy 4:2; Proverbs 30:6; Revelation 22:18-19). We see this throughout the Old Testament, the Scriptures that Paul had for his Word ministry. Throughout the Old Testament, whether it was for the Tabernacle and its related things, the gifts, sacrifices, feasts, worship, Laws and regulations, etc., for everything God had given specific instructions and they had to be adhered to by His people the Israelites. Whether it was Moses striking the rock instead of speaking to it (Numbers 20:8-10; Deuteronomy 1:37; 3:23-26), or Nadab and Abihu getting carried away and trying to worship though they had not been commanded to do so (Leviticus 10:1-2), or David transporting the Ark of the Covenant, though very reverentially, but not in the prescribed manner (1 Chronicles 13 and 15 chapters), etc. Anyone who went beyond what God had stated and instructed, paid a very heavy price for it. Today, one very common way of committing this same error is through using Biblical words, phrases, and facts in a manner and with meanings and usage that is unBiblical, i.e., with meanings and implications about those words, phrases, and facts not given or used in the Bible. We should be very thankful for the ministry of the Lord Jesus on our behalf (1 John 2:1-2) that keeps us safe and does not let us suffer what those people of God suffered in the Old Testament times for similar transgressions.

The second thing that Paul states in 1 Corinthians 4:6 is never to engage in the game of one-upmanship; i.e., of trying to project self above others, or of showing others to be below self. Both these tendencies are because of pride, even when it is subtle and hidden. God hates pride (Proverbs 8:13; 16:5; James 4:6); pride always leads to a downfall (Proverbs 16:18; 29:23). Moreover, this one-upmanship promotes following human leaders instead of following the Lord Jesus, leads to factionalism and divisions in Churches, and also to immaturity and carnal behavior in the congregation, rendering them incapable of learning the deeper things of God’s Word (1 Corinthians 1:10-13; 3:1-3; 11:18-19).

So, every preacher and teacher of God’s Word should regularly engage in this discipline of self-evaluation, and make sure that he does not believe, preach, and teach anything that will in any manner adulterate God’s Word. We will look at the other two stages of this cross checking in the next article.
