     जो भी ढिठाई से मन में पाप को रखते हुए, बाहरी रीति से धर्मी बनने का ढोंग रखते हुए परमेश्वर के पास मन के इस दोगलेपन के साथ आते हैं, परमेश्वर उनसे उनके उस दोगलेपन के अनुसार व्यवहार करता है (यहेजकेल 14:3-7)।

    परमेश्वर की अनाज्ञाकारिता के संदर्भ में इसे कुछ और विस्तार से देखते हैं: इस्राएल को दी गई अपनी व्यवस्था के आरम्भ में, परमेश्वर ने सभी के लिए परमेश्वर और अन्य मनुष्यों के साथ सम्बन्धों एवँ व्यवहार को नियंत्रित करने के लिए अपनी दस आज्ञाएं दीं। ये दस आज्ञाएँ मनुष्य जीवन के प्रत्येक आयाम – परमेश्वर, परिवार और समाज से उसके सम्बन्ध एवँ व्यवहार से सम्बन्ध रखतीं हैं, उन सम्बन्धों के लिए मार्गदर्शन करती हैं, मनुष्यों के व्यवहार को निर्धारित करती हैं। यह एक रोचक तथ्य है कि सँसार के किसी भी देश के संविधान में ऐसा कुछ भी नहीं है जो इन दस आज्ञाओं की परिधि के बाहर हो। इन दस आज्ञाओं के आरंभिक भाग में परमेश्वर ने मनुष्य के जीवन में अपने स्थान, आदर और मान को किसी भी अन्य को देना, परमेश्वर को कोई या कैसा भी भौतिक स्वरूप देना, वर्जित किया है (निर्गमन 20:1-7)। इसलिए, किसी भी व्यक्ति के द्वारा,- अपने जीवन में परमेश्वर को उसका वह सर्वोच्च आदर एवँ स्थान प्रदान नहीं करना, जिसका वह हकदार है;

- अपने जीवन में परमेश्वर के स्थान पर सँसार की बातों या लोगों को अधिक महत्व देना;
- और सच्चे जीवते सृजनहार प्रभु परमेश्वर को, जो आत्मा है (यूहन्ना 4:24), अपने मन के अनुसार बनाए हुए कोई भी भौतिक स्वरूप, मूर्तियों या सृजी गई वस्तुओं के रूप में उपासना करना, उन मन-गढ़न्त नाशमान भौतिक वस्तुओं को ईश्वरीय आदर अथवा महत्व देना, आदि;

    सभी परमेश्वर की आज्ञाओं का उल्लंघन हैं, इसलिए पाप है।

    इन्हीं दस आज्ञाओं का शेष भाग (निर्गमन 20:8-20), मनुष्य के पारिवारिक और सामाजिक सम्बन्धों के विषय में है। इन आज्ञाओं का उल्लंघन करना भी, अर्थात पारिवारिक एवँ सामाजिक सम्बन्धों में परमेश्वर के निर्देशों की अवहेलना करना भी पाप है।

    प्रभु यीशु मसीह से, उनकी पृथ्वी की सेवकाई के दिनों में यहूदियों के एक धार्मिक अगुवे ने उन्हें परखने के लिए एक प्रश्न किया था, और प्रभु के उत्तर से वह फिर निरुत्तर हो गया। यह वार्तालाप हमारे वर्तमान सन्दर्भ के लिए महत्वपूर्ण है: “और उन में से एक व्यवस्थापक ने परखने के लिये, उस से पूछा। हे गुरु; व्यवस्था में कौन सी आज्ञा बड़ी है? उसने उस से कहा, तू परमेश्वर अपने प्रभु से अपने सारे मन और अपने सारे प्राण और अपनी सारी बुद्धि के साथ प्रेम रख। बड़ी और मुख्य आज्ञा तो यही है। और उसी के समान यह दूसरी भी है, कि तू अपने पड़ोसी से अपने समान प्रेम रख। ये ही दो आज्ञाएं सारी व्यवस्था और भविष्यद्वक्ताओं का आधार है” (मत्ती 22:35-40)। प्रभु यीशु के इस उत्तर में मनुष्य के परमेश्वर तथा अन्य मनुष्यों के प्रति व्यवहार और सम्बन्ध का सार है; इसीलिए उन्होंने यह भी कहा कि परमेश्वर की सारी व्यवस्था, इन्हीं दो आज्ञाओं पर आधारित है। इसका स्पष्ट निष्कर्ष है कि मनुष्य के किसी भी विचार या व्यवहार में जहाँ भी इनमें से एक भी आज्ञा का उल्लंघन हुआ, वहीं मनुष्य पाप की दशा में आ गया; परमेश्वर की व्यवस्था का उल्लंघन करने के कारण, पाप का दोषी ठहराया गया है।

    परमेश्वर के वचन बाइबल के अनुसार, अदन की वाटिका में मनुष्य द्वारा किए गए उस प्रथम पाप के बाद से मनुष्य में पाप करने की प्रवृत्ति ने घर कर लिया, और तब से सँसार का प्रत्येक मनुष्य पाप स्वभाव, तथा पाप करने की प्रवृत्ति के साथ जन्म लेता है “इसलिये जैसा एक मनुष्य के द्वारा पाप जगत में आया, और पाप के द्वारा मृत्यु आई, और इस रीति से मृत्यु सब मनुष्यों में फैल गई, इसलिये कि सब ने पाप किया” (रोमियों 5:12)। इसका सर्व-विदित और प्रत्यक्ष प्रमाण है, जब हम मानवीय व्यवहार एवँ क्रियाओं का, पाप के प्रति बाइबल के इन उपरोक्त व्यापक दृष्टिकोणों के सन्दर्भ में, आँकलन करते हैं, तो यह प्रगट हो जाता है कि परमेश्वर की दृष्टि में कोई भी मनुष्य पाप से अछूता नहीं है, सभी मनुष्य किसी-न-किसी रीति से पापी होने की परिभाषा में आ जाते हैं। इस कारण अपनी स्वाभाविक दशा में, सभी मनुष्यों ने मन-ध्यान-विचार-मनसा-दृष्टिकोण, व्यवहार या कर्मों के द्वारा पाप किया है; वे चाहे किसी भी धर्म, जाति, देश, आदि के क्यों न हों, इसलिए सभी मनुष्य परमेश्वर की महिमा से रहित और परमेश्वर के साथ संगति रखने के अयोग्य हैं, “इसलिये कि सब ने पाप किया है और परमेश्वर की महिमा से रहित हैं” (रोमियों 3:23) और सृष्टि के आरम्भ में पाप के विषय परमेश्वर द्वारा कहे गए दण्ड, मृत्यु (उत्पत्ति 2:17), के भागी हैं, “क्योंकि पाप की मजदूरी तो मृत्यु है, परन्तु परमेश्वर का वरदान हमारे प्रभु मसीह यीशु में अनन्त जीवन है” (रोमियों 6:23)।

    पाप की इस अपरिहार्य प्रतीत होने वाली समस्या के ईश्वरीय समाधान, “... परन्तु परमेश्वर का वरदान हमारे प्रभु मसीह यीशु में अनन्त जीवन है” (रोमियों 6:23), के बारे में हम अगले लेख में देखना आरम्भ करेंगे।

    यदि आप ने अभी भी अपने पापों के लिए प्रभु यीशु से क्षमा नहीं मांगी है, तो अभी आपके पास अवसर है। स्वेच्छा से, सच्चे और पूर्णतः समर्पित मन से, अपने पापों के प्रति सच्चे पश्चाताप के साथ एक छोटी प्रार्थना, “हे प्रभु यीशु मैं मान लेता हूँ कि मैंने जाने-अनजाने में, मन-ध्यान-विचार और व्यवहार में आपकी अनाज्ञाकारिता की है, पाप किए हैं। मैं मान लेता हूँ कि आपने क्रूस पर दिए गए अपने बलिदान के द्वारा मेरे पापों के दण्ड को अपने ऊपर लेकर पूर्णतः सह लिया, उन पापों की पूरी-पूरी कीमत सदा काल के लिए चुका दी है। कृपया मेरे पापों को क्षमा करें, मेरे मन को अपनी ओर परिवर्तित करें, और मुझे अपना शिष्य बना लें, अपने साथ कर लें।” आपका सच्चे मन से लिया गया मन परिवर्तन का यह निर्णय आपके इस जीवन तथा परलोक के जीवन को स्वर्गीय जीवन बना देगा।

The Bible, Sin, and Salvation – 3

English Translation

What Is Sin? - 3

In the last two articles, while considering what God has taught about sin in His Word, the Bible, we have looked at some very important and fundamental things about what sin is according to the Bible. We have seen that:

- According to the Bible, sin has been defined by God Himself; not what it may have been defined and explained by any person or persons. God is true, eternal, omnipotent, unchanging, the same always and everywhere (Malachi 3:6; Hebrews 13:8); and all of these qualities of Him are also present in His Word, i.e., in whatever He says and does (Psalm 89:34; Ezekiel 12:28). Whatever He has said and determined, ultimately, only that will be followed and obeyed by all, and eventually everything will be judged, every decision will be made according to His will and what He has said (John 12:48; 1 Corinthians 3:11-13).

- Sin is not merely doing something physically, but, essentially, it is to violate God's laws (1 John 3:4). Iniquity or unrighteousness of any kind is sin (1 John 5:17), no matter what the circumstances, or the purpose behind committing it.
- That is why all such thoughts, attitudes, feelings, intentions, tendencies, actions, behaviors, etc., which are not according to the rules and standards of righteousness given by Him, and do not conform to those standards, are sin in the eyes of God.
- Being in sin is a state of the mind and heart. Every type of sin begins in the mind, and the sin hidden in the mind manifests itself in physical activities in convenient circumstances and time (James 1:14–15; Mark 7:20–23). That is why in the eyes of God, sins committed in a person’s thoughts are as punishable, as sins actually committed physically (Matthew 5:22, 28).

Those who come to God with hypocrisy of heart, showing themselves to be righteous outwardly, while hiding sin in their heart, God treats them according to their hypocrisy (Ezekiel 14:3-7).

Let's look at this in some more detail in the context of disobedience towards God: At the beginning of his Law given to Israel, God gave his Ten Commandments for everyone, to govern man’s relationships and behavior with God and with other human beings. These Ten Commandments deal with each and every aspect of human life – man’s relationship and behavior with God, with family, and with society. They serve as a guide for maintaining those relationships, and for determining the mutual behavior of human beings. It is an interesting fact that there is nothing in the constitution of any country in the world that is outside the purview of these Ten Commandments. In the opening part of these Ten Commandments, God forbids man to give His, i.e., God’s status, His honor, and His dignity to anyone else; or to make any kind of physical representation of God (Exodus 20:1–7). Therefore, for any person,

- not to give God the highest respect and place He deserves in one’s life;

- giving more importance to the things or people of the world than to God in one’s life; and,
- according divine reverence to, and worshiping the true and living Creator God, the Lord who is Spirit (John 4:24), in the form of any man-made physical form represented in perishable material things, or as idols made according to man’s imagination, or considering Him to have the form of any creature created by God, etc.

These, and all such things are all violations of God's commandments, and therefore, are sin.

The remainder of these Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:8-20) deal with man's family and social relationships. To disobey these commandments is also a sin, since that is disobeying God's instructions for family and social relationships and responsibilities.

The Lord Jesus Christ, during his earthly ministry, was asked a question by a religious leader of the Jews who wanted to test him, and the Lord’s answer put him at a loss for words. This conversation is important to our current context: “Then one of them, a lawyer, asked Him a question, testing Him, and saying, "Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?" Jesus said to him, "'You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.' This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets" (Matthew 22:35-40). This answer from the Lord Jesus summarizes man's expected behavior and relationship towards God and other human beings. That is why He also said that the whole Law of God is based on these two commandments. The clearly evident conclusion is that wherever any one of these commands is violated in any thought or behavior of man, there man has come to be in the state of sin; being guilty of having transgressed God’s Law and committed sin.

According to God's Word the Bible, since that first sin committed by man in the Garden of Eden, the tendency to sin has taken roots in man. Since then onwards, every human being in the world is born with a sin nature, with a tendency to sin, "Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned" (Romans 5:12). This is very well seen and evidenced by the fact that, when we assess human behavior and actions in the context of the above-mentioned broad-ranging Biblical views of sin, it becomes apparent that in God's eyes no man is free from sin, all human beings fall into the definition of being a sinner in some way or the other. Therefore, in their natural state, all human beings have sinned in mind-attitude-thought-tendency-perspective, behavior or actions. No matter what their religion, race, country, etc. may be, all human beings fall short of the glory of God and are unworthy of fellowship with God, “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23) And are deserving of God's punishment of sin, death, as He had said at the beginning of their creation (Genesis 2:17), "For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord" (Romans 6:23).

The divine solution to this seemingly insurmountable problem of sin, "...but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord" (Romans 6:23), we will begin to look at in the next article.

If you still haven't asked the Lord Jesus for forgiveness for your sins, you still have a chance right now. Voluntarily, with a sincere and wholly submissive heart, with sincere repentance of your sins, please say a short prayer, “Lord Jesus, I confess that I have disobeyed You, knowingly or unknowingly, in mind, in thought, in attitude, and in deeds, and have committed sins. I believe that you have fully borne the punishment of my sins by your sacrifice on the cross, and have paid the full price of those sins for all eternity. Please forgive my sins, change my heart and mind towards you, and make me your disciple, take me with you." This sincere decision to allow the Lord to change your heart and mind, taken with an honest heart will make this life of yours and the life of the hereafter into heavenly life.

Question: In the Bible, in 1 John 5:16-17 what is the sin mentioned that does not result in death?

Answer:
           These verses have intrigued many people, and many explanations have been given by various Commentators. Therefore it may not be possible to have a clear explanation acceptable to everyone. When interpreting or understanding 1 John 5:16-17, it is quite common to start thinking in context of verses related to sin and it's damning effects, e.g. Romans 3:23 and Romans 6:23, and other Bible verses with a similar application.

           But we need to keep in mind and consider the fact that at the time when John wrote this epistle, the New Testament had neither been compiled from the many writings available at that time, nor was it available to the people in the form we have it now. Therefore the people to whom John wrote this letter did not have those verses and the related teachings which we now have with us, on the basis of which we now try to interpret and understand these verses. Hence those people then could not see and understand what John had written to them, in a manner similar to how we commonly see and understand them today; nor could they apply any meanings from other New Testament teachings into these verses, as we presently do. Therefore to understand these verses, they should be seen and understood in the same context and manner as those initial audience did, when John had written to them. That is the primary and basic meaning of these verses/statements; any other meanings and interpretations that are ascribed can be supplementary or complimentary to this primary meaning; but the other meanings cannot ever replace this primary meaning.

           On reading the initial chapters of John's letter it seems that amongst the audience to whom this letter was addressed, though some were 'children' in the Christian Faith, but most of them were of a good standing and maturity, and knew the facts related to righteousness and their faith (1 John 2:7, 13, 14, 20, 21, 24, 27). Therefore it is quite likely that they had some knowledge and understanding about the Law given to the Israelites through Moses in the Old Testament. For those who believed in God Jehovah, their understanding of what sin is and what it is not was according to that part of the Scripture which we know as the Old Testament today; and from it mainly according to the Law. When we see on the basis of the Old Testament righteousness and Law, we see in the Law there are some sins mentioned for which there was no repentance and atonement provided, only the death penalty had been decreed for them; for example see: Exodus 28:43; Leviticus 22:9; Numbers 1:51; 3:10; 3:38; 18:7; 18:22; 18:32; etc. In Leviticus 10:1, 2 we see that Nadab and Abihu were given no time or opportunity to repent, nor was anyone given any opportunity to intercede and pray, or offer any atonement for them, they died immediately. The people who were aware of the righteousness of the Old Testament, they knew that in the Law some sins are mentioned that have the death penalty prescribed for them, with no provision of repentance, atonement, and forgiveness having been made for them; therefore, even if forgiveness were to be asked for them, there is no possibility of any forgiveness being granted for them.

           Secondly, in 1 John 5:16 twice a sense of "petitioning or praying" has been used; once as "ask" and second time as "pray". For these two instances, two separate words have been used in the original Greek language.  The word used for the first instance is ‘aiteo’ which means ‘to ask’, or, ‘to request’; whereas the word used in the second instance is ‘erotao’ which means ‘to interrogate.’ When we see the various English Versions of the Bible, then too the same thing becomes apparent that not all translators render these words as "pray" in the sense of putting forth a petition or making a request. Therefore, we can paraphrase 1 John 5:16 as follows “If anyone sees his brother sinning a sin which does not lead to death, he can ask [aiteo’ - request God], and He will give him life for those who commit a sin not leading to death. There also is a sin leading to death. I do not say that he should pray [erotao’ – interrogate, or be inquisitive] about that.” Here the "pray" used in the latter part of the verse is not in the same sense, as we commonly understand it to mean as asking or petitioning God for something to seek His favor or benevolence.

           Here a note needs to be made of two very significant things in the verse that have a direct bearing on its interpretation and on understanding its meaning. The first is, as stated at the beginning of the verse, John is saying this about "his brother" i.e. another Christian Believer; or about a person who, by coming into faith in the Lord Jesus and having received forgiveness from sins by the grace of God, has entered into eternal life (John 1:12-13). Being a Christian Believer, he is now outside the purview and requirements of the Law and its compulsions; the requirements of the Law have no hold upon him (Romans 7:6; Colossians 2:14), and he can neither be evaluated under the provisions of the Law, nor held guilty and penalized under the Law.

           The second is, that the verse ends by saying “...There is sin leading to death. I do not say that he should pray about that” and this is the sentence that has caused the uncertainty and confusion related to this verse. The important thing to be noted here and to be understood is that John has not said “since those sins of that person will not be forgiven so I am not asking you to pray for them” – but generally that is the understanding and meaning that is assumed and accepted while reading this verse; whereas that is not what is written here. Instead of "pray" if we use the literal meaning of the original Greek word ‘erotao’ i.e. ‘to interrogate’, then the sentence becomes “...There is sin leading to death. I do not say that he should 'be interrogatedabout that, or, “...there is sin which leads to death as per the Law: but there is no need for anyone to interrogate or be inquisitive about it.” Reading this with the first factor - "brother" in mind, now the meaning of what John is saying becomes, that, when the Lord has forgiven that person who could not have been forgiven through the Law, and has included him in His Church and made him a member of His family as a child of God, then why should some person be interrogating about his sins; what need does anyone have of inquiring about his sins? He may have committed a sin which is unforgivable according to the Law, but you have nothing to do with the person's sins being forgivable or not, therefore there is no need for you to interrogate or inquire about them.

           If we see this verse, 1 John 5:16, in context of its preceding verses, then too this interpretation fits in with what is being said in those verses. In 1 John 5:13-15 John is explaining to his readers that through faith in the Lord Jesus they have not only received eternal life, but they also been given the confidence to ask of God, and that if their petitions are in accordance with the will of God then having heard their petitions, He will also fulfill them. Since, as per John 3:16 it is God's will to provide eternal life to those who believe on the Lord Jesus, and now since the Law and it's penalties are no longer applicable upon us because of our being in Christ Jesus, therefore they can unhesitatingly ask for pardon and for eternal life being granted to even those, who were not worthy of this on the basis of the Law, and the Lord will grant eternal life even to them.

           It may be possible that on the basis of the Law, some people may have been hesitant and may have doubted that when God has already decreed the death penalty for some sins in the Law, then how can we ask God to go back on His word and change His Law? Here John is encouraging them, that even if someone has committed a sin, which according to the Law is to be punished by death, even then the way has been opened for him, and through the Lord Jesus he has the opportunity to receive forgiveness and eternal life.

     जो भी ढिठाई से मन में पाप को रखते हुए, बाहरी रीति से धर्मी बनने का ढोंग रखते हुए परमेश्वर के पास मन के इस दोगलेपन के साथ आते हैं, परमेश्वर उनसे उनके उस दोगलेपन के अनुसार व्यवहार करता है (यहेजकेल 14:3-7)।

    परमेश्वर की अनाज्ञाकारिता के संदर्भ में इसे कुछ और विस्तार से देखते हैं: इस्राएल को दी गई अपनी व्यवस्था के आरंभ में, परमेश्वर ने सभी के लिए परमेश्वर और अन्य मनुष्यों के साथ संबंधों एवँ व्यवहार को नियंत्रित करने के लिए अपनी दस आज्ञाएं दीं। ये दस आज्ञाएँ मनुष्य जीवन के प्रत्येक आयाम – परमेश्वर, परिवार और समाज से उसके संबंध एवँ व्यवहार से संबंध रखतीं हैं, उन संबंधों के लिए मार्गदर्शन करती हैं, मनुष्यों के व्यवहार को निर्धारित करती हैं। यह एक रोचक तथ्य है कि सँसार के किसी भी देश के संविधान में ऐसा कुछ भी नहीं है जो इन दस आज्ञाओं की परिधि के बाहर हो। इन दस आज्ञाओं के आरंभिक भाग में परमेश्वर ने मनुष्य के जीवन में अपने स्थान, आदर और मान को किसी भी अन्य को देना, परमेश्वर को कोई या कैसा भी भौतिक स्वरूप देना, वर्जित किया है (निर्गमन 20:1-7)। इसलिए, किसी भी व्यक्ति के द्वारा,

  • अपने जीवन में परमेश्वर को उसका वह सर्वोच्च आदर एवँ स्थान प्रदान नहीं करना, जिसका वह हकदार है;

  • अपने जीवन में परमेश्वर के स्थान पर सँसार की बातों या लोगों को अधिक महत्व देना;

What Is Sin? - 3

In the last two articles, while considering what God has taught about sin in His Word, the Bible, we have looked at some very important and fundamental things about what sin is according to the Bible. We have seen that:

  • According to the Bible, sin is not as it may be defined and explained according to any person or persons; rather, it has been defined by God Himself. God is true, eternal, omnipotent, unchanging, the same always and everywhere (Malachi 3:6; Hebrews 13:8); and all of these qualities are also present in whatever He says and does (Psalm 89:34; Ezekiel 12:28). Whatever He has said and determined only that will ultimately be followed and obeyed by all, and eventually everything will be judged, every decision will be made according to His will and statements (John 12:48; 1 Corinthians 3:11-13).

  • Sin is not merely doing something physically, but, essentially, it is to violate God's laws (1 John 3:4). Iniquity or unrighteousness of any kind is sin (1 John 5:17), no matter what the circumstances, or the purpose behind committing it.

  • That is why all such thoughts, attitudes, feelings, intentions, tendencies, actions, behaviors, etc., which are not according to the rules and standards of righteousness given by Him, and do not conform to those standards, are sin in the eyes of God.

  • Being in sin is a state of the mind and heart. Every type of sin begins in the mind, and manifests itself in physical activities in convenient circumstances and time (James 1:14–15; Mark 7:20–23). That is why in the eyes of God, sins committed in thoughts are as punishable, as sins actually committed physically (Matthew 5:22, 28).

It is an interesting fact that there is nothing in the constitution of any country in the world, which is outside the purview of these Ten Commandments. In the opening part of these Ten Commandments, God forbids man to give His status, His honor, and His dignity to anyone else; or to make any kind of physical representation of God (Exodus 20:1–7). Therefore, for any person,

  • not to give God the highest respect and place He deserves in one’s life;

  • giving more importance to the things or people of the world than to God in one’s life; and,

  • according divine reverence to, and worshipping the true and living Creator God, the Lord who is Spirit (John 4:24), in the form of any man-made physical form represented in perishable material things, or as idols made according to man’s imagination, or considering Him to have the form of any creature created by God, etc.

are all violations of God's commandments, and therefore, are sin.

The remainder of these Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:8-20) deal with man's family and social relationships. To disobey these commandments is also a sin, since that is disobeying God's instructions for family and social relationships and responsibilities.

The Lord Jesus Christ, during his earthly ministry, was asked a question by a religious leader of the Jews who wanted to test him, and he was unable to counter the Lord's answer. The clearly evident conclusion is that wherever any one of these commands is violated in any thought or behavior of man, there man has come to be in the state of sin; is guilty of having committed sin.

According to God's Word the Bible, since that first sin committed by man in the Garden of Eden, the tendency to sin has taken roots in man, and since then onwards, every human being in the world is born with a sin nature, with a tendency to sin, "Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned" (Romans 5:12).
