       प्रभु की मेज़ में भाग लेने से संबंधित प्रश्नों के बारे में देखते हुए, हम देख चुके हैं कि कितनी समय-अवधि में यह करना चाहिए - यदि और अधिक नहीं तो कम से कम सप्ताह में एक बार तो हो; और यह भी देखा है कि बाइबल के अनुसार इस आम धारणा का कोई समर्थन नहीं है कि इसे केवल एक विधिवत निर्धारित पादरी ही दे सकता है - कोई भी नया-जन्म पाया हुआ मसीही विश्वासी, प्रभु यीशु का प्रतिबद्ध अनुयायी यह कर सकता है। एक अन्य प्रश्न जो अकसर उठता है, विश्वास में आने के कितने समय के बाद मसीही विश्वासी प्रभु भोज में भाग ले सकता है? एक बार फिर, परमेश्वर का वचन बाइबल इसके बारे में बिल्कुल स्पष्ट है, और जो भी उसे पढ़ते और अध्ययन करते हैं, उन्हें उत्तर के विषय में कोई असमंजस नहीं होता है। किन्तु डिनॉमिनेशंस के विधि-विधानों के कारण, क्योंकि मनुष्यों ने अपनी बुद्धि से नियम बनाकर उन्हें परमेश्वर के वचन पर पालन करने के लिए थोप दिया है, बजाए इसके कि परमेश्वर द्वारा दी गई बातों और निर्देशों का पालन करें; इसीलिए भिन्न डिनॉमिनेशंस, समुदायों, और गुटों के विधि-विधानों का पालन करने वालों में भिन्नताएँ और असमंजस आ गए हैं।

       यहाँ पर जब भक्त यहूदियों ने पतरस द्वारा बताए गए समाधान को जब सुना, और “उसी दिन” उन्होंने जो प्रतिक्रिया दी तथा उन्हें जो प्रतिक्रिया मिली, उसके बारे में कोई असमंजस नहीं है। हमारे स्पष्ट समझने के लिए, इन दो पदों में लिखी इन प्रतिक्रियाओं को, सूचीबद्ध कर लेते हैं:

        * जिन्होंने पतरस के वचन को ग्रहण किया, उन्होंने बपतिस्मा लिया - विश्वास करने के तुरन्त बाद, यहाँ कोई उल्लेख नहीं है कि उनके विश्वास की पुष्टि करने और स्तर का आँकलन करने के लिए कुछ समय प्रतीक्षा करवाई गई।

        * जिन्होंने विश्वास किया था, वे उनमें, अर्थात प्रभु के शिष्यों में मिल गए - उन्हें तुरन्त ही मसीही विश्वासियों में सम्मिलित कर लिया गया, और वे उस समूह का भाग बन गए।

        * ये नए विश्वासी, मसीही विश्वासियों के समूह में सम्मिलित होने के साथ ही, मसीही विश्वास के चार खंबों, अर्थात प्रेरितों से शिक्षा पाने, संगति रखने, रोटी तोड़ने अर्थात प्रभु भोज में सम्मिलित होने, और प्रार्थना करने में सम्मिलित होने लगे, लौलीन रहने लगे।

 

       इसकी पुष्टि 2:46-47 से भी हो जाती है, जहाँ लिखा है कि जितनों को प्रभु प्रतिदिन उनके साथ जोड़ देता था, वे भी प्रेरितों 2:42 में उल्लेखित मसीही विश्वास के चार खंबों में भाग लेने लगे, बिना उन पर किसी भी कारण अथवा तर्क के अनुसार कोई प्रतीक्षा की अवधि लागू किए हुए।

        एक बार फिर से पवित्र आत्मा की अगुवाई में पौलुस द्वारा 1 कुरिन्थियों 11:17-34 में लिखे गए प्रभु भोज से संबंधित गलतियों को सुधारने के खण्ड पर ध्यान कीजिए। जैसे हमने पिछले लेख में भी इस खण्ड से प्रभु भोज देने के लिए विधिवत निर्धारित पादरी की आवश्यकता के बारे में देखा था, उसी प्रकार से अब ध्यान कीजिए कि क्या यहाँ पर किसी के मसीही विश्वास में होने की किसी अवधि का, किसी भी संदर्भ में, कोई भी उल्लेख है? कदापि नहीं! यहाँ इस प्रकार की किसी बात का न तो उल्लेख है और न ही ऐसा कोई अभिप्राय दिया गया है। उस कलीसिया की गलतियों और उनके विश्वास के जीवन की गंभीर स्थिति के लिए नए मसीही विश्वासियों को ज़िम्मेदार ठहराना बहुत सहज और तर्कपूर्ण होता। किन्तु पवित्र आत्मा पौलुस से ऐसा कुछ नहीं लिखवाता है, और न ही ऐसा कोई संकेत अथवा तात्पर्य भी देता है। न तो यहाँ, कोरिन्थ की मण्डली को लिखी गई इस पत्री में, और न ही किसी अन्य पत्री में या कहीं और, कभी भी यह कहा गया है कि क्योंकि नए मसीही विश्वासियों को ‘पूर्ण-सदस्यता’ के अधिकार और ज़िम्मेदारियाँ सौंप दी गईं थीं, जैसी कि अन्य परिपक्व और वरीयता प्राप्त मसीहियों की थीं, इसलिए मसीही विश्वास और संस्कारों से संबंधित अपनी अपरिपक्वता के कारण उन्होंने मण्डली में समस्याएं खड़ी कर दीं।

       इसलिए, हम निःसंकोच यह निष्कर्ष ले सकते हैं कि नए मसीही विश्वासी के प्रभु भोज में भाग लेने के बारे में किसी को भी, कोई भी गलतफहमी नहीं होनी चाहिए। जिस पल से वह अपने पापों से पश्चाताप करके प्रभु यीशु को अपना उद्धारकर्ता ग्रहण करता है, उसी पल से प्रत्येक व्यक्ति प्रभु की कलीसिया का सदस्य, परमेश्वर के परिवार का अंग हो जाता है; और उसके भी वही अधिकार और ज़िम्मेदारियाँ होती हैं, जो कलीसिया में तथा परमेश्वर के परिवार में किसी भी अन्य सदस्य की होती हैं। एक नए विश्वासी के लिए जो बात मना की गई है वह है कलीसिया का ‘अध्यक्ष’ होना (1 तिमुथियुस 3:6) - ‘अध्यक्ष या बिशप’ वैसा नहीं जैसा आज हम देखते और समझते हैं, परन्तु उस अभिप्राय से जैसा पौलुस द्वारा लिखे जाने के समय उसका होता था - किसी स्थानीय कलीसिया के कार्यों की देखभाल और प्रबंधन करने वाला उस कलीसिया का सदस्य। इसलिए, यह प्रकट है कि परमेश्वर का वचन किसी के लिए भी अपने विश्वास में आने के बाद अपने विश्वास और परमेश्वर के प्रति अपनी प्रतिबद्धता की पुष्टि करने के लिए, प्रभु भोज में भाग लेने योग्य होने के लिए, किसी भी समय-अवधि, या प्रतीक्षा करने के लिए नहीं कहता है।

       अगले लेख में हम देखेंगे कि यह असमंजस कलीसियाओं में क्यों आ गया। यदि आप एक मसीही विश्वासी हैं, और प्रभु की मेज़ में भाग लेते रहे हैं, तो कृपया अपने जीवन को जाँच कर देख लें कि आप वास्तव में पापों से छुड़ाए गए हैं तथा आप ने अपना जीवन प्रभु की आज्ञाकारिता में जीने के लिए उस को समर्पित किया है। आपके लिए यह अनिवार्य है कि आप परमेश्वर के वचन की सही शिक्षाओं को जानने के द्वारा एक परिपक्व विश्वासी बनें, तथा सभी शिक्षाओं को वचन की कसौटी पर परखने, और बेरिया के विश्वासियों के समान, लोगों की बातों को पहले वचन से जाँचने और उनकी सत्यता को निश्चित करने के बाद ही उनको स्वीकार करने और मानने वाले बनें (प्रेरितों 17:11; 1 थिस्सलुनीकियों 5:21)। अन्यथा शैतान द्वारा छोड़े हुए झूठे प्रेरित और भविष्यद्वक्ता मसीह के सेवक बन कर (2 कुरिन्थियों 11:13-15) अपनी ठग विद्या और चतुराई से आपको प्रभु के लिए अप्रभावी कर देंगे और आप के मसीही जीवन एवं आशीषों का नाश कर देंगे।

       यदि आपने प्रभु की शिष्यता को अभी तक स्वीकार नहीं किया है, तो अपने अनन्त जीवन और स्वर्गीय आशीषों को सुनिश्चित करने के लिए अभी प्रभु यीशु के पक्ष में अपना निर्णय कर लीजिए। जहाँ प्रभु की आज्ञाकारिता है, उसके वचन की बातों का आदर और पालन है, वहाँ प्रभु की आशीष और सुरक्षा भी है। प्रभु यीशु से अपने पापों के लिए क्षमा माँगकर, स्वेच्छा से तथा सच्चे मन से अपने आप को उसकी अधीनता में समर्पित कर दीजिए - उद्धार और स्वर्गीय जीवन का यही एकमात्र मार्ग है। आपको स्वेच्छा और सच्चे मन से प्रभु यीशु मसीह से केवल एक छोटी प्रार्थना करनी है, और साथ ही अपना जीवन उसे पूर्णतः समर्पित करना है। आप यह प्रार्थना और समर्पण कुछ इस प्रकार से भी कर सकते हैं, “प्रभु यीशु मैं आपका धन्यवाद करता हूँ कि आपने मेरे पापों की क्षमा और समाधान के लिए उन पापों को अपने ऊपर लिया, उनके कारण मेरे स्थान पर क्रूस की मृत्यु सही, गाड़े गए, और मेरे उद्धार के लिए आप तीसरे दिन जी भी उठे, और आज जीवित प्रभु परमेश्वर हैं। कृपया मेरे पापों को क्षमा करें, मुझे अपनी शरण में लें, और मुझे अपना शिष्य बना लें। मैं अपना जीवन आप के हाथों में समर्पित करता हूँ।” सच्चे और समर्पित मन से की गई आपकी एक प्रार्थना आपके वर्तमान तथा भविष्य को, इस लोक के और परलोक के जीवन को, अनन्तकाल के लिए स्वर्गीय एवं आशीषित बना देगी।

How Soon After Coming To Faith? (1)

 

       In considering the questions associated with participating in the Lord’s Table, we have already seen about the frequency of doing so - at least once a week, if not more frequently; and that Biblically there is nothing to support the common belief that it can only be administered by an ordained Pastor - any Born-Again Christian Believer, a committed disciple of the Lord Jesus can do it. Another question that often comes up is, how soon after coming to faith can the Christian Believer participate in the Holy Communion? Again, God’s Word the Bible is very clear about it, leaving those who read and study it, in no doubt about the answer. But because of denominational rules and regulations made by men in their wisdom then imposed over and above God’s Word, and made mandatory, instead of following what God has given and instructed, therefore, confusion and variations have come up amongst the followers of denominations, sects, and groups.

       Let us go back to Peter’s first preaching after being empowered by the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost, and what happened in response to his message. Peter had addressed the “devout Jews” (Acts 2:5), who had gathered in Jerusalem to observe the Feasts prescribed by the Law. As he spoke to them from the Scriptures, these devout Jews were “cut to the heart” and asked Peter what should they do (2:37), since it was apparent to them that their religion, religiosity, observance of the Law, and keeping of the Feasts had not made them acceptable to the Lord God, had not saved them. Peter asks them to repent of their sins and be baptized to receive the promise of God, made for everyone all over the world (2:38-40). Now, let us look at Acts 2:41-42 “Then those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them. And they continued steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers.”

       There is no confusion here, about what happened when the devout Jews heard Peter’s solution to their problem. The Biblical text is clear and unambiguous in these verses 41 & 42, about the response of, and towards those Jews, “on that very day”. For our clarity, let us outline their responses, from these two verses:

        * Those who received Peter’s word were baptized - immediately after believing, with no waiting for ascertaining and confirming the status of their faith being mentioned.

        * Those who had believed were “added to them”, i.e., to the Lord’s disciples - they immediately were accepted and became a part of the group of the disciples of the Lord Jesus.

        * These new disciples, immediately after being joined into the group of followers of the Lord Jesus, also began to steadfastly continue in the Four Pillars of Christian Faith, i.e., learning God’s Word from the Apostles, in Fellowship, in Breaking of Bread i.e., participating in the Holy Communion, and in Prayers.

             This is further affirmed from 2:46-47, where all those who were added to the Church by the Lord every day, also participated with the others in the Four Pillars of Christian Faith mentioned in Acts 2:42, without any waiting or delay being imposed on them for any reason whatsoever.

        Consider again, Paul’s corrective discourse in 1 Corinthians 11:17-34, given through the guidance of the Holy Spirit. As we had taken note from this section, in the previous article, about the necessity of an ordained Pastor to administer the Lord’s Table; similarly, now, take note if there is any mention of anyone’s duration of being in faith, in any context, in this passage? No! There is nothing of this sort mentioned or implied. It would have been very convenient and logical to hold the newcomers into Faith responsible for the sorry state of affairs in the Church and for the gross irregularities seen in participating in the Lord’s Table. But the Holy Spirit does not have Paul say this or even remotely imply it in any manner. Neither here in this letter to the Corinthian Church, nor anywhere else, in any of the epistles, is it ever said that since new-comers to the Faith were allowed to participate as ‘full-fledged members’, were immediately conferred all the rights and privileges like the more senior and more mature members, therefore, they created these problems due their immaturity in understanding about the Christian Faith, its sacraments and their observances.

       Therefore, we can safely conclude that no one should have any misunderstandings on this count about a Born-Again Christian Believer’s participating in the Lord’s Table. From the moment of his repenting of sins and accepting the Lord Jesus as his savior, every person is a part of the Church, a member of God’s family, and has the same rights and privileges as anyone else in the Church and the family of God has. The only thing not permitted for new comers into the Faith is the office of Bishop (1 Timothy 3:6) - Bishop, not in the way it is seen and understood nowadays, but as it was seen and understood at the time Paul wrote it - meaning a member of that Church functioning as an overseer of the functioning of that local Church. Therefore, in effect, the Word of God does not prescribe any waiting period, or time for affirming one’s faith and commitment to God, before permitting them participation in the Holy Communion.

       In the following article, we will consider how and why this confusion has come around. If you are a Christian Believer and have been participating in the Lord’s Table, then please examine your life and make sure that you are actually a disciple of the Lord, i.e., are redeemed from your sins, have submitted and surrendered your life to the Lord Jesus to live in obedience to Him and His Word. You should also always, like the Berean Believers, first check and test all teachings that you receive from the Word of God, and only after ascertaining the truth and veracity of the teachings brought to you by men, should you accept and obey them (Acts 17:11; 1 Thessalonians 5:21). If you do not do this, the false apostles and prophets sent by Satan as ministers of Christ (2 Corinthians 11:13-15), will by their trickery, cunningness, and craftiness render you ineffective for the Lord and cause severe damage to your Christian life and your rewards.

 

       If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord Jesus, then to ensure your eternal life and heavenly rewards, take a decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now. Wherever there is surrender and obedience towards the Lord Jesus, the Lord’s blessings and safety are also there. If you are still not Born Again, have not obtained salvation, or have not asked the Lord Jesus for forgiveness for your sins, then you have the opportunity to do so right now. A short prayer said voluntarily with a sincere heart, with heartfelt repentance for your sins, and a fully submissive attitude, “Lord Jesus, I confess that I have disobeyed You, and have knowingly or unknowingly, in mind, in thought, in attitude, and in deeds, committed sins. I believe that you have fully borne the punishment of my sins by your sacrifice on the cross, and have paid the full price of those sins for all eternity. Please forgive my sins, change my heart and mind towards you, and make me your disciple, take me with you." God longs for your company and wants to see you blessed, but to make this possible, is your personal decision. Will you not say this prayer now, while you have the time and opportunity to do so - the decision is yours.

तात्पर्य प्रकट है कि पवित्र आत्मा और उसकी सामर्थ्य प्राप्त होने तक, प्रभु के उन वास्तविक शिष्यों में भी अपनी सामर्थ्य से, अपने पिछले अनुभवों के आधार पर, प्रभु द्वारा उनके लिए निर्धारित सेवकाई को करने की सामर्थ्य नहीं थी; उन्हें वह सामर्थ्य पुनः प्राप्त होने के बाद ही इस सभी को करना था। और शिष्यों ने यही किया। वे लगातार मन्दिर जाकर परमेश्वर की स्तुति करते थे (लूका 24:53), और प्रभु के अन्य शिष्यों के साथ एकत्रित होकर प्रार्थना करते रहे (प्रेरितों 1:13-15)। किन्तु उन्होंने सुसमाचार प्रचार या प्रभु के नाम में उनकी निर्धारित सेवकाई का कोई और काम तब तक नहीं किया जब तक कि पिन्तेकुस्त के दिन पवित्र आत्मा और उसकी सामर्थ्य को प्राप्त नहीं कर लिया। और उसके बाद पतरस के पहले ही प्रचार से तीन हजार भक्त यहूदियों ने उद्धार पाया, शिष्य निडर होकर प्रचार करने लगे, आश्चर्यकर्म करने लगे। उनके विरुद्ध भीषण सताव और विरोध के बावजूद मसीही विश्वासियों तथा कलीसियाओं की सँख्या बढ़ती चली गई; और थोड़े ही समय में, उन्हें “ये लोग जिन्होंने जगत को उलटा पुलटा कर दिया है” कहा जाने लगा (प्रेरितों 17:6)।

हमारे इस वर्तमान अध्ययन के विषय के सन्दर्भ में, प्रश्न उठता है कि जब ये शिष्य पहले भी यही सब कार्य, प्रभु द्वारा सेवकाई पर भेजे जाने के समय कर चुके थे, तो फिर प्रभु के स्वर्ग पर उठाए जाने के बाद, पवित्र आत्मा के उनपर उतरने तक, उन्हीं कार्यों को फिर से करने के लिए उन्हें प्रतीक्षा क्यों करनी पड़ी? इस बात को तथा प्रेरितों द्वारा किए जाने वाले आश्चर्यकर्मों पर हम अगले लेख में विचार करेंगे।

The Four Pillars of Christian Living - 4 - Prayer (17)

To be continually joined with God in prayer, i.e., to keep conversing with God about everything, at all times; speak to Him about our things, and listen to what He has to say, is an essential and inseparable part of practical Christian living. It is by doing this that the Christian Believers can stay safe from being misled by Satan and falling into sin. The initial Christian Believers and the first churches continued steadfastly in four things given in Acts 2:42, of which prayer was the fourth one. For the past few articles, we have been considering about and checking out the prevalent wrong concepts and false teachings prevalent amongst the Christians about prayer from the Bible, so as to understand their correct Biblical form, application, and following them in personal lives. In this context, presently we are considering and learning about asking prayers “in faith” and asking them “in the name of Jesus.” We have seen the actual meaning and application of these two phrases from the Bible, that the Lord had not said these phrases about any kind of prayer made by anyone. Rather, the Lord had spoken them for those prayers made by His true, surrendered, and obedient disciples, which were in the will of God and consistent with the Word of God. From the last article we have started to consider another related fact from the Bible - the disciples of the Lord doing miracles. We saw through references from the Bible, that during the earthly ministry of the Lord, the disciples of the Lord could do the gospel preaching, casting out evil spirits, healings, etc., only when the Lord had given them the permission and power to do these things. Except for these few occasions when the disciples did them, during His earthly ministry, it was the Lord who had done these things Himself. Today we will look further about this on the basis of what the Lord has said in His Word.

On the basis of the references and context mentioned in the previous article, it is evident that those true, surrendered, and obedient disciples of the Lord, could not do on their own and outside of the will and permission of the Lord, even the things they had done in obedience to the Lord after being instructed and empowered by Him. In this context, take note of another instruction given by the Lord. At the time of His ascension to heaven, the Lord had instructed His disciples in Matthew 28:19-20 “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Amen.” Along with this, the Lord had also instructed in Acts 1:4, 8 that “And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, "which," He said, "you have heard from Me;” and “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth."” As we have seen in the previous article, these disciples of the Lord had already done these things, when the Lord had sent them out for ministry. But now, although the Lord had kept it for them that after He had gone, they had to go and do it again from Jerusalem to the end of the earth, but not immediately; only after receiving the Holy Spirit and His power.

The implication is evident, till they had received the Holy Spirit and His power, even those true disciples of the Lord, on the basis of their earlier experiences, did not have the power to do their Lord assigned ministry. They were to go and do the assigned ministry only after they had received the power once again. And that is what the disciples did. They continually went to the Temple to praise and worship God (Luke 24:53), and they gathered with the other disciples to pray (Acts 1:13-15). But they neither preached the gospel, nor did anything else related to their ministry, till on the day of Pentecost, they received the Holy Spirit and His power. Once that happened, with the first sermon Peter preached, three thousand devout Jews received salvation, the disciples started to preach fearlessly and do miracles. Despite severe persecution and opposition, the numbers of the Christian Believers and churches continued to increase; and within a short span of time, they were being called “These who have turned the world upside down” (Acts 17:6).

In context of our current study, a question that arises is, when these disciples had already done these same things earlier, when the Lord had sent them for their ministry, then after the ascension of the Lord to heaven, why did they have to wait to do them, till they received the Holy Spirit and His power? We will look into it and about the miracles done by the Apostles, in the next article.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Repenting of your sins, and asking the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely, surrendering yourself to Him - is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. You only have to say a short but sincere prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ willingly and with a penitent heart, and at the same time completely commit and submit your life to Him. You can also make this prayer and submission in words something like, “Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sins and repent of them. I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself, paying for them through your life.  Because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, and you rose again from the grave on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God and have freely provided to me the forgiveness, and redemption from my sins, through faith in you. Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.

मसीही विश्वास में आने के कितने समय के बाद? (1)   

प्रभु की मेज़ में भाग लेने से संबंधित प्रश्नों के बारे में देखते हुए, हम देख चुके हैं कि कितनी समय-अवधि में यह करना चाहिए - यदि और अधिक नहीं तो कम से कम सप्ताह में एक बार तो हो; और यह भी देखा है कि बाइबल के अनुसार इस आम धारणा का कोई समर्थन नहीं है कि इसे केवल एक विधिवत निर्धारित पादरी ही दे सकता है - कोई भी नया-जन्म पाया हुआ मसीही विश्वासी, प्रभु यीशु का प्रतिबद्ध अनुयायी यह कर सकता है। एक अन्य प्रश्न जो अकसर उठता है, विश्वास में आने के कितने समय के बाद मसीही विश्वासी प्रभु भोज में भाग ले सकता है? एक बार फिर, परमेश्वर का वचन बाइबल इसके बारे में बिल्कुल स्पष्ट है, और जो भी उसे पढ़ते और अध्ययन करते हैं, उन्हें उत्तर के विषय में कोई असमंजस नहीं होता है। किन्तु डिनॉमिनेशंस के विधि-विधानों के कारण, क्योंकि मनुष्यों ने अपनी बुद्धि से नियम बनाकर उन्हें परमेश्वर के वचन पर पालन करने के लिए थोप दिया है, बजाए इसके कि परमेश्वर द्वारा दी गई बातों और निर्देशों का पालन करें; इसीलिए भिन्न डिनॉमिनेशंस, समुदायों, और गुटों के विधि-विधानों का पालन करने वालों में भिन्नताएँ और असमंजस आ गए हैं।

हम वापस पतरस के पहले प्रचार पर जाते हैं, जो उसने पवित्र आत्मा से भरने के बाद पिन्तेकुस्त के दिन किया था, और उसके प्रचार के फलस्वरूप जो हुआ, उसे देखते हैं। पतरस का यह संदेश उन “भक्त यहूदियों” (प्रेरितों 2:5) को संबोधित था, जो यरूशलेम में व्यवस्था के अनुसार पर्व मनाने के लिए एकत्रित हुए थे। जब वह उनसे पवित्र शास्त्र के आधार पर बात कर रहा था, तो उन भक्त यहूदियों के “हृदय छिद गए” और वे पतरस से पूछने लगे कि उन्हें क्या करना चाहिए (2:37)। क्योंकि अब उन्हें यह प्रकट था कि उनके धर्म, धार्मिकता के निर्वाह, व्यवस्था का पालन करने और पर्व मनाने के द्वारा वे प्रभु परमेश्वर को स्वीकार्य नहीं हुए थे, उन्होंने उद्धार नहीं पाया था। पतरस उनसे पापों के लिए पश्चाताप करके बपतिस्मा लेने के लिए कहता है, ताकि वे संसार के सभी लोगों के लिए की गई परमेश्वर की प्रतिज्ञा के भागी हो सकें (2:38-40)। अब इससे आगे की बात को प्रेरितों 2:41-42 से देखते हैं, “सो जिन्होंने उसका वचन ग्रहण किया उन्होंने बपतिस्मा लिया; और उसी दिन तीन हजार मनुष्यों के लगभग उन में मिल गए। और वे प्रेरितों से शिक्षा पाने, और संगति रखने में और रोटी तोड़ने में और प्रार्थना करने में लौलीन रहे।”

यहाँ पर उन भक्त यहूदियों ने पतरस द्वारा बताए गए समाधान को जब सुना, और “उसी दिन” उन्होंने जो प्रतिक्रिया दी तथा उन्हें जो प्रतिक्रिया मिली, उसके बारे में कोई असमंजस नहीं है। हमारे स्पष्ट समझने के लिए, इन दो पदों में लिखी इन प्रतिक्रियाओं को, सूचीबद्ध कर लेते हैं:

• जिन्होंने पतरस के वचन को ग्रहण किया, उन्होंने बपतिस्मा लिया - विश्वास करने के तुरन्त बाद, यहाँ कोई उल्लेख नहीं है कि उनके विश्वास की पुष्टि करने और विश्वास में परिपक्वता के स्तर का आँकलन करने के लिए कुछ समय प्रतीक्षा करवाई गई। 

• जिन्होंने विश्वास किया था, वे “उनमें,” अर्थात प्रभु के शिष्यों में मिल गए - उन्हें तुरन्त ही मसीही विश्वासियों में सम्मिलित कर लिया गया, और वे उस समूह का भाग बन गए। 

• ये नए विश्वासी, मसीही विश्वासियों के समूह में सम्मिलित होने के साथ ही, मसीही विश्वास के चार स्तम्भ, अर्थात प्रेरितों से शिक्षा पाने, संगति रखने, रोटी तोड़ने अर्थात प्रभु भोज में सम्मिलित होने, और प्रार्थना करने में सम्मिलित होने लगे, लौलीन रहने लगे। 

इसकी पुष्टि 2:46-47 से भी हो जाती है, जहाँ लिखा है कि जितनों को प्रभु प्रतिदिन उनके साथ जोड़ देता था, वे भी प्रेरितों 2:42 में उल्लेखित मसीही विश्वास के चार स्तम्भ में भाग लेने लगे, बिना उन पर किसी भी कारण के, अथवा तर्क के अनुसार, कोई प्रतीक्षा की अवधि लागू किए हुए।

एक बार फिर से पवित्र आत्मा की अगुवाई में पौलुस द्वारा 1 कुरिन्थियों 11:17-34 में लिखे गए प्रभु भोज से संबंधित गलतियों को सुधारने के खण्ड पर ध्यान कीजिए। जैसे हमने पिछले लेख में भी इस खण्ड से प्रभु भोज देने के लिए विधिवत निर्धारित पादरी की तथाकथित आवश्यकता के बारे में देखा था, उसी प्रकार से अब ध्यान कीजिए कि क्या यहाँ पर किसी के मसीही विश्वास में होने की किसी अवधि का, किसी भी संदर्भ में, कोई भी उल्लेख है? कदापि नहीं! यहाँ इस प्रकार की किसी बात का न तो उल्लेख है और न ही ऐसा कोई अभिप्राय दिया गया है। उस कलीसिया की गलतियों और उनके विश्वास के जीवन की गंभीर स्थिति के लिए नए मसीही विश्वासियों को ज़िम्मेदार ठहराना बहुत सहज और तर्कपूर्ण होता। किन्तु पवित्र आत्मा पौलुस से ऐसा कुछ नहीं लिखवाता है, और न ही ऐसा कोई संकेत अथवा तात्पर्य भी देता है। न तो यहाँ, कोरिन्थ की मण्डली को लिखी गई इस पत्री में, और न ही किसी अन्य पत्री में या कहीं और, कभी भी यह कहा गया है कि क्योंकि नए मसीही विश्वासियों को ‘पूर्ण-सदस्यता’ के अधिकार और ज़िम्मेदारियाँ सौंप दी गईं थीं, जैसी कि अन्य परिपक्व और वरीयता प्राप्त मसीहियों की थीं, इसलिए मसीही विश्वास और संस्कारों से संबंधित अपनी अपरिपक्वता के कारण उन्होंने मण्डली में समस्याएं खड़ी कर दीं।

 

इसलिए, हम निःसंकोच यह निष्कर्ष ले सकते हैं कि नए मसीही विश्वासी के प्रभु भोज में भाग लेने के बारे में किसी को भी, कोई भी गलतफहमी नहीं होनी चाहिए। जिस पल से वह अपने पापों से पश्चाताप करके प्रभु यीशु को अपना उद्धारकर्ता ग्रहण करता है, उसी पल से प्रत्येक व्यक्ति प्रभु की कलीसिया का सदस्य, परमेश्वर के परिवार का अंग हो जाता है; और उसके भी वही अधिकार और ज़िम्मेदारियाँ होती हैं, जो कलीसिया में तथा परमेश्वर के परिवार में किसी भी अन्य सदस्य की होती हैं। एक नए विश्वासी के लिए जो बात मना की गई है वह है कलीसिया का ‘अध्यक्ष’ होना (1 तिमुथियुस 3:6) - ‘अध्यक्ष या बिशप’ वैसा नहीं जैसा आज हम देखते और समझते हैं, परन्तु उस अभिप्राय से जैसा पौलुस द्वारा लिखे जाने के समय उसका होता था - किसी स्थानीय कलीसिया के कार्यों की देखभाल और प्रबंधन करने वाला उस कलीसिया का सदस्य। इसलिए, यह प्रकट है कि परमेश्वर का वचन किसी के लिए भी अपने विश्वास में आने के बाद अपने विश्वास और परमेश्वर के प्रति अपनी प्रतिबद्धता की पुष्टि करने के लिए, प्रभु भोज में भाग लेने योग्य होने के लिए, किसी भी समय-अवधि, या प्रतीक्षा करने के लिए नहीं कहता है। 

अगले लेख में हम देखेंगे कि यह असमंजस कलीसियाओं में क्यों आ गया।

How Soon After Coming To Faith? (1)

 

In considering the questions associated with participating in the Lord’s Table, we have already seen about the frequency of doing so - should be at least once a week, if not more frequently; and, that Biblically there is nothing to support the common belief that it can only be administered by an ordained Pastor - it can be administered by any Born-Again Christian Believer, a committed disciple of the Lord Jesus. Another question that often comes up is, how soon after coming to faith can the Christian Believer participate in the Holy Communion? Again, God’s Word the Bible is very clear about it, leaving those who read and study it, in no doubt about the answer. But because of the denominational rules and regulations made by men in their own wisdom, then superimposed upon God’s Word and made mandatory; and instead of following what God has given and instructed, confusion and variations have come up amongst the followers of denominations, sects, and groups.

Let us go back to Peter’s first preaching after being empowered by the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost, and what happened in response to his message. Peter had addressed the “devout Jews” (Acts 2:5), who had gathered in Jerusalem to observe the Feasts prescribed by the Law. As he spoke to them from the Scriptures, these devout Jews were “cut to the heart” and asked Peter what should they do (2:37)? Since it was apparent to them that their religion, religiosity, observance of the Law, and keeping of the Feasts had not made them acceptable to the Lord God, had not saved them. Peter asks them to repent of their sins and be baptized to receive the promise of God, which was made for everyone all over the world (2:38-40). Now, let us look at Acts 2:41-42 “Then those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them. And they continued steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers.”

There is no confusion here, about what happened when the devout Jews heard Peter’s solution to their predicament. The Biblical text is very clear, and quite unambiguous in these verses 41 & 42, about the response of, and, towards those Jews, “on that very day”. For our clarity, let us outline the responses, from these two verses:

• Those who received Peter’s word, were baptized - immediately after believing, no waiting for ascertaining and confirming the status of the certainty or maturity of their faith is mentioned here.

• Those who had believed were “added to them”, i.e., to the Lord’s disciples - they immediately were accepted and became a part of the group of the disciples of the Lord Jesus.

• These new disciples, immediately after being assimilated into the group of followers of the Lord Jesus, also began to steadfastly continue in the Four Pillars of Christian Faith, i.e., learning God’s Word from the Apostles, in Fellowship, in Breaking of Bread i.e., participating in the Holy Communion, and in Prayers.

This is further affirmed from 2:46-47, where all those who were added to the Church by the Lord every day, also participated with the others in the Four Pillars of Christian Faith mentioned in Acts 2:42, without any waiting or delay being imposed on them for any reason whatsoever.

Once again consider Paul's corrective discourse in 1 Corinthians 11:17-34, given through the guidance of the Holy Spirit. As we had taken note from this section, in the previous article, about the alleged necessity of an ordained Pastor to administer the Lord’s Table; similarly, now, take note if there is any mention of anyone’s duration of being in faith, in any context, in this passage? No! There is nothing of this sort mentioned or implied. It would have been very convenient and logical to hold the newcomers into Faith responsible for the sorry state of affairs in the Church and for the gross irregularities seen about participating in the Lord’s Table. But the Holy Spirit does not have Paul say this or even remotely imply it in any manner. Neither here in this letter to the Corinthian Church, nor anywhere else, in any of the epistles, is it ever said that since new-comers to the Faith were allowed to participate as ‘full-fledged members’, since they were immediately conferred all the rights and privileges like the more senior and more mature members, therefore, they created these problems due their immaturity in understanding about the Christian Faith, its sacraments and their observances.

 

Therefore, we can safely conclude that no one should have any misunderstandings on this count about a Born-Again Christian Believer participating in the Lord’s Table. From the moment of his repenting of sins and accepting the Lord Jesus as his savior, every person is a part of the Church, a member of God’s family, and has the same rights and privileges as anyone else in the Church and the family of God has. The only thing not permitted for novices in the Faith is the office of Bishop (1 Timothy 3:6) - Bishop, not in the way it is seen and understood nowadays, but as it was seen and understood at the time Paul wrote it - meaning a member of that Church functioning as an overseer of the functioning of that local Church. Therefore, in effect, the Word of God does not prescribe any waiting period, or time of affirming one’s faith and commitment to God, before permitting them the participation in the Holy Communion.

In the next article we will consider how and why this confusion has come around.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Repenting of your sins, and asking the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely, surrendering yourself to Him - is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. You only have to say a short but sincere prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ willingly and with a penitent heart, and at the same time completely commit and submit your life to Him. You can also make this prayer and submission in words something like, “Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sins and repent of them. I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself, paying for them through your life.  Because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, and you rose again from the grave on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God and have freely provided to me the forgiveness, and redemption from my sins, through faith in you. Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.

प्रभु की मेज़ में भाग लेने से संबंधित प्रश्नों के बारे में देखते हुए, हम देख चुके हैं कि कितनी समय-अवधि में यह करना चाहिए - यदि और अधिक नहीं तो कम से कम सप्ताह में एक बार तो हो; और यह भी देखा है कि बाइबल के अनुसार इस आम धारणा का कोई समर्थन नहीं है कि इसे केवल एक विधिवत निर्धारित पादरी ही दे सकता है - कोई भी नया-जन्म पाया हुआ मसीही विश्वासी, प्रभु यीशु का प्रतिबद्ध अनुयायी यह कर सकता है। एक अन्य प्रश्न जो अकसर उठता है, विश्वास में आने के कितने समय के बाद मसीही विश्वासी प्रभु भोज में भाग ले सकता है? एक बार फिर, परमेश्वर का वचन बाइबल इसके बारे में बिल्कुल स्पष्ट है, और जो भी उसे पढ़ते और अध्ययन करते हैं, उन्हें उत्तर के विषय में कोई असमंजस नहीं होता है। किन्तु डिनॉमिनेशंस के विधि-विधानों के कारण, क्योंकि मनुष्यों ने अपनी बुद्धि से नियम बनाकर उन्हें परमेश्वर के वचन पर पालन करने के लिए थोप दिया है, बजाए इसके कि परमेश्वर द्वारा दी गई बातों और निर्देशों का पालन करें; इसीलिए भिन्न डिनॉमिनेशंस, समुदायों, और गुटों के विधि-विधानों का पालन करने वालों में भिन्नताएँ और असमंजस आ गए हैं।

हम वापस पतरस के पहले प्रचार पर जाते हैं, जो उसने पवित्र आत्मा से भरने के बाद पिन्तेकुस्त के दिन किया था, और उसके प्रचार के फलस्वरूप जो हुआ, उसे देखते हैं। पतरस का यह संदेश उन “भक्त यहूदियों” (प्रेरितों 2:5) को संबोधित था, जो यरूशलेम में व्यवस्था के अनुसार पर्व मनाने के लिए एकत्रित हुए थे। जब वह उनसे पवित्र शास्त्र के आधार पर बात कर रहा था, तो उन भक्त यहूदियों के “हृदय छिद गए” और वे पतरस से पूछने लगे कि उन्हें क्या करना चाहिए (2:37)। क्योंकि अब उन्हें यह प्रकट था कि उनके धर्म, धार्मिकता के निर्वाह, व्यवस्था का पालन करने और पर्व मनाने के द्वारा वे प्रभु परमेश्वर को स्वीकार्य नहीं हुए थे, उन्होंने उद्धार नहीं पाया था। पतरस उनसे पापों के लिए पश्चाताप करके बपतिस्मा लेने के लिए कहता है, ताकि वे संसार के सभी लोगों के लिए की गई परमेश्वर की प्रतिज्ञा के भागी हो सकें (2:38-40)। अब इससे आगे की बात को प्रेरितों 2:41-42 से देखते हैं, “सो जिन्होंने उसका वचन ग्रहण किया उन्होंने बपतिस्मा लिया; और उसी दिन तीन हजार मनुष्यों के लगभग उन में मिल गए। और वे प्रेरितों से शिक्षा पाने, और संगति रखने में और रोटी तोड़ने में और प्रार्थना करने में लौलीन रहे।”

यहाँ पर जब भक्त यहूदियों ने पतरस द्वारा बताए गए समाधान को जब सुना, और “उसी दिन” उन्होंने जो प्रतिक्रिया दी तथा उन्हें जो प्रतिक्रिया मिली, उसके बारे में कोई असमंजस नहीं है। हमारे स्पष्ट समझने के लिए, इन दो पदों में लिखी इन प्रतिक्रियाओं को, सूचीबद्ध कर लेते हैं:

• जिन्होंने पतरस के वचन को ग्रहण किया, उन्होंने बपतिस्मा लिया - विश्वास करने के तुरन्त बाद, यहाँ कोई उल्लेख नहीं है कि उनके विश्वास की पुष्टि करने और स्तर का आँकलन करने के लिए कुछ समय प्रतीक्षा करवाई गई। 

• जिन्होंने विश्वास किया था, वे उनमें, अर्थात प्रभु के शिष्यों में मिल गए - उन्हें तुरन्त ही मसीही विश्वासियों में सम्मिलित कर लिया गया, और वे उस समूह का भाग बन गए। 

• ये नए विश्वासी, मसीही विश्वासियों के समूह में सम्मिलित होने के साथ ही, मसीही विश्वास के चार खंबों, अर्थात प्रेरितों से शिक्षा पाने, संगति रखने, रोटी तोड़ने अर्थात प्रभु भोज में सम्मिलित होने, और प्रार्थना करने में सम्मिलित होने लगे, लौलीन रहने लगे। 

इसकी पुष्टि 2:46-47 से भी हो जाती है, जहाँ लिखा है कि जितनों को प्रभु प्रतिदिन उनके साथ जोड़ देता था, वे भी प्रेरितों 2:42 में उल्लेखित मसीही विश्वास के चार खंबों में भाग लेने लगे, बिना उनपर किसी भी कारण अथवा तर्क के अनुसार कोई प्रतीक्षा की अवधि लागू किए हुए।

एक बार फिर से पवित्र आत्मा की अगुवाई में पौलुस द्वारा 1 कुरिन्थियों 11:17-34 में लिखे गए प्रभु भोज से संबंधित गलतियों को सुधारने के खण्ड पर ध्यान कीजिए। जैसे हमने पिछले लेख में भी इस खण्ड से प्रभु भोज देने के लिए विधिवत निर्धारित पादरी की आवश्यकता के बारे में देखा था, उसी प्रकार से अब ध्यान कीजिए कि क्या यहाँ पर किसी के मसीही विश्वास में होने की किसी अवधि का, किसी भी संदर्भ में, कोई भी उल्लेख है? कदापि नहीं! यहाँ इस प्रकार की किसी बात का न तो उल्लेख है और न ही ऐसा कोई अभिप्राय दिया गया है। उस कलीसिया की गलतियों और उनके विश्वास के जीवन की गंभीर स्थिति के लिए नए मसीही विश्वासियों को ज़िम्मेदार ठहराना बहुत सहज और तर्कपूर्ण होता। किन्तु पवित्र आत्मा पौलुस से ऐसा कुछ नहीं लिखवाता है, और न ही ऐसा कोई संकेत अथवा तात्पर्य भी देता है। न तो यहाँ, कोरिन्थ की मण्डली को लिखी गई इस पत्री में, और न ही किसी अन्य पत्री में या कहीं और, कभी भी यह कहा गया है कि क्योंकि नए मसीही विश्वासियों को ‘पूर्ण-सदस्यता’ के अधिकार और ज़िम्मेदारियाँ सौंप दी गईं थीं, जैसी कि अन्य परिपक्व और वरीयता प्राप्त मसीहियों की थीं, इसलिए मसीही विश्वास और संस्कारों से संबंधित अपनी अपरिपक्वता के कारण उन्होंने मण्डली में समस्याएं खड़ी कर दीं।

 

इसलिए, हम निःसंकोच यह निष्कर्ष ले सकते हैं कि नए मसीही विश्वासी के प्रभु भोज में भाग लेने के बारे में किसी को भी, कोई भी गलतफहमी नहीं होनी चाहिए। जिस पल से वह अपने पापों से पश्चाताप करके प्रभु यीशु को अपना उद्धारकर्ता ग्रहण करता है, उसी पल से प्रत्येक व्यक्ति प्रभु की कलीसिया का सदस्य, परमेश्वर के परिवार का अंग हो जाता है; और उसके भी वही अधिकार और ज़िम्मेदारियाँ होती हैं, जो कलीसिया में तथा परमेश्वर के परिवार में किसी भी अन्य सदस्य की होती हैं। एक नए विश्वासी के लिए जो बात मना की गई है वह है कलीसिया का ‘अध्यक्ष’ होना (1 तिमुथियुस 3:6) - ‘अध्यक्ष या बिशप’ वैसा नहीं जैसा आज हम देखते और समझते हैं, परन्तु उस अभिप्राय से जैसा पौलुस द्वारा लिखे जाने के समय उसका होता था - किसी स्थानीय कलीसिया के कार्यों की देखभाल और प्रबंधन करने वाला उस कलीसिया का सदस्य। इसलिए, यह प्रकट है कि परमेश्वर का वचन किसी के लिए भी अपने विश्वास में आने के बाद अपने विश्वास और परमेश्वर के प्रति अपनी प्रतिबद्धता की पुष्टि करने के लिए, प्रभु भोज में भाग लेने योग्य होने के लिए, किसी भी समय-अवधि, या प्रतीक्षा करने के लिए नहीं कहता है।

 

अगले लेख में हम देखेंगे कि यह असमंजस कलीसियाओं में क्यों आ गया। यदि आप एक मसीही विश्वासी हैं, और प्रभु की मेज़ में भाग लेते रहे हैं, तो कृपया अपने जीवन को जाँच कर देख लें कि आप वास्तव में पापों से छुड़ाए गए हैं तथा आप ने अपना जीवन प्रभु की आज्ञाकारिता में जीने के लिए उस को समर्पित किया है। आपके लिए यह अनिवार्य है कि आप परमेश्वर के वचन की सही शिक्षाओं को जानने के द्वारा एक परिपक्व विश्वासी बनें, तथा सभी शिक्षाओं को वचन की कसौटी पर परखने, और बेरिया के विश्वासियों के समान, लोगों की बातों को पहले वचन से जाँचने और उनकी सत्यता को निश्चित करने के बाद ही उनको स्वीकार करने और मानने वाले बनें (प्रेरितों 17:11; 1 थिस्सलुनीकियों 5:21)। अन्यथा शैतान द्वारा छोड़े हुए झूठे प्रेरित और भविष्यद्वक्ता मसीह के सेवक बन कर (2 कुरिन्थियों 11:13-15) अपनी ठग विद्या और चतुराई से आपको प्रभु के लिए अप्रभावी कर देंगे और आप के मसीही जीवन एवं आशीषों का नाश कर देंगे।

  

यदि आपने प्रभु की शिष्यता को अभी तक स्वीकार नहीं किया है, तो अपने अनन्त जीवन और स्वर्गीय आशीषों को सुनिश्चित करने के लिए अभी प्रभु यीशु के पक्ष में अपना निर्णय कर लीजिए। जहाँ प्रभु की आज्ञाकारिता है, उसके वचन की बातों का आदर और पालन है, वहाँ प्रभु की आशीष और सुरक्षा भी है। प्रभु यीशु से अपने पापों के लिए क्षमा माँगकर, स्वेच्छा से तथा सच्चे मन से अपने आप को उसकी अधीनता में समर्पित कर दीजिए - उद्धार और स्वर्गीय जीवन का यही एकमात्र मार्ग है। आपको स्वेच्छा और सच्चे मन से प्रभु यीशु मसीह से केवल एक छोटी प्रार्थना करनी है, और साथ ही अपना जीवन उसे पूर्णतः समर्पित करना है। आप यह प्रार्थना और समर्पण कुछ इस प्रकार से भी कर सकते हैं, “प्रभु यीशु मैं आपका धन्यवाद करता हूँ कि आपने मेरे पापों की क्षमा और समाधान के लिए उन पापों को अपने ऊपर लिया, उनके कारण मेरे स्थान पर क्रूस की मृत्यु सही, गाड़े गए, और मेरे उद्धार के लिए आप तीसरे दिन जी भी उठे, और आज जीवित प्रभु परमेश्वर हैं। कृपया मेरे पापों को क्षमा करें, मुझे अपनी शरण में लें, और मुझे अपना शिष्य बना लें। मैं अपना जीवन आप के हाथों में समर्पित करता हूँ।” सच्चे और समर्पित मन से की गई आपकी एक प्रार्थना आपके वर्तमान तथा भविष्य को, इस लोक के और परलोक के जीवन को, अनन्तकाल के लिए स्वर्गीय एवं आशीषित बना देगी।

English Translation

How Soon After Coming To Faith? (1)

 

In considering the questions associated with participating in the Lord’s Table, we have already seen about the frequency of doing so - at least once a week, if not more frequently; and that Biblically there is nothing to support the common belief that it can only be administered by an ordained Pastor - any Born-Again Christian Believer, a committed disciple of the Lord Jesus can do it. Another question that often comes up is, how soon after coming to faith can the Christian Believer participate in the Holy Communion? Again, God’s Word the Bible is very clear about it, leaving those who read and study it, in no doubt about the answer. But because of denominational rules and regulations made by men in their wisdom then superimposed upon God’s Word and made mandatory, instead of following what God has given and instructed, confusion and variations have come up amongst the followers of denominations, sects, and groups.

Let us go back to Peter’s first preaching after being empowered by the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost, and what happened in response to his message. Peter had addressed the “devout Jews” (Acts 2:5), who had gathered in Jerusalem to observe the Feasts prescribed by the Law. As he spoke to them from the Scriptures, these devout Jews were “cut to the heart” and asked Peter what should they do (2:37), since it was apparent to them that their religion, religiosity, observance of the Law, and keeping of the Feasts had not made them acceptable to the Lord God, had not saved them. Peter asks them to repent of their sins and be baptized to receive the promise of God, made for everyone all over the world (2:38-40). Now, let us look at Acts 2:41-42 “Then those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them. And they continued steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers.”

There is no confusion here, about what happened when the devout Jews heard Peter’s solution to their predicament. The Biblical text is clear and unambiguous in these verses 41 & 42, about the response of and towards those Jews, “on that very day”. For our clarity, let us outline their responses, from these two verses:

• Those who received Peter’s word were baptized - immediately after believing, with no waiting for ascertaining and confirming the status of their faith being mentioned.

• Those who had believed were “added to them”, i.e., to the Lord’s disciples - they immediately were accepted and became a part of the group of the disciples of the Lord Jesus.

• These neophytes, immediately after being assimilated into the group of followers of the Lord Jesus, also began to steadfastly continue in the Four Pillars of Christian Faith, i.e., learning God’s Word from the Apostles, in Fellowship, in Breaking of Bread i.e., participating in the Holy Communion, and in Prayers.

This is further affirmed from 2:46-47, where all those who were added to the Church by the Lord every day, also participated with the others in the Four Pillars of Christian Faith mentioned in Acts 2:42, without any waiting or delay being imposed on them for any reason whatsoever.

Consider again, Paul’s corrective discourse in 1 Corinthians 11:17-34, given through the guidance of the Holy Spirit. As we had taken note from this section, in the previous article, about the necessity of an ordained Pastor to administer the Lord’s Table; similarly, now, take note if there is any mention of anyone’s duration of being in faith, in any context, in this passage? No! There is nothing of this sort mentioned or implied. It would have been very convenient and logical to hold the newcomers into Faith responsible for the sorry state of affairs in the Church and for the gross irregularities seen in participating in the Lord’s Table. But the Holy Spirit does not have Paul say this or even remotely imply it in any manner. Neither here in this letter to the Corinthian Church, nor anywhere else, in any of the epistles, is it ever said that since new-comers to the Faith were allowed to participate as ‘full-fledged members’, were immediately conferred all the rights and privileges like the more senior and more mature members, therefore, they created these problems due their immaturity in understanding about the Christian Faith, its sacraments and their observances.

 

Therefore, we can safely conclude that no one should have any misunderstandings on this count about a Born-Again Christian Believer’s participating in the Lord’s Table. From the moment of his repenting of sins and accepting the Lord Jesus as his savior, every person is a part of the Church, a member of God’s family, and has the same rights and privileges as anyone else in the Church and the family of God has. The only thing not permitted for novices in the Faith is the office of Bishop (1 Timothy 3:6) - Bishop, not in the way it is seen and understood nowadays, but as it was seen and understood at the time Paul wrote it - meaning a member of that Church functioning as an overseer of the functioning of that local Church. Therefore, in effect, the Word of God does not prescribe any waiting period, or time for affirming one’s faith and commitment to God, before permitting them participation in the Holy Communion.

In the following article, we will consider how and why this confusion has come around. If you are a Christian Believer and have been participating in the Lord’s Table, then please examine your life and make sure that you are actually a disciple of the Lord, i.e., are redeemed from your sins, have submitted and surrendered your life to the Lord Jesus to live in obedience to Him and His Word. You should also always, like the Berean Believers, first check and test all teachings that you receive from the Word of God, and only after ascertaining the truth and veracity of the teachings brought to you by men, should you accept and obey them (Acts 17:11; 1 Thessalonians 5:21). If you do not do this, the false apostles and prophets sent by Satan as ministers of Christ (2 Corinthians 11:13-15), will by their trickery, cunningness, and craftiness render you ineffective for the Lord and cause severe damage to your Christian life and your rewards.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord Jesus, then to ensure your eternal life and heavenly rewards, take a decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now. Wherever there is surrender and obedience towards the Lord Jesus, the Lord’s blessings and safety are also there. If you are still not Born Again, have not obtained salvation, or have not asked the Lord Jesus for forgiveness for your sins, then you have the opportunity to do so right now. A short prayer said voluntarily with a sincere heart, with heartfelt repentance for your sins, and a fully submissive attitude, “Lord Jesus, I confess that I have disobeyed You, and have knowingly or unknowingly, in mind, in thought, in attitude, and in deeds, committed sins. I believe that you have fully borne the punishment of my sins by your sacrifice on the cross, and have paid the full price of those sins for all eternity. Please forgive my sins, change my heart and mind towards you, and make me your disciple, take me with you." God longs for your company and wants to see you blessed, but to make this possible, is your personal decision. Will you not say this prayer now, while you have the time and opportunity to do so - the decision is yours.
