Utilizing Spiritual Gifts - Romans 12

In the previous articles we have seen from 1 Corinthians 12 about the Spiritual gifts given to Christian Believers by God, according to the ministry He has assigned to them, so that through those gifts the Believers can carry out their ministry properly and worthily; as the individual ministries are different, so are the associated gifts. Not everyone has been given the same gift, and no one has been given all the gifts. Every gift given to any person is according to the ministry assigned to him and is to be used for the benefit of all members and the edification of the Church; no gift is for anyone’s personal use or benefit. Who is to receive which gift is the decision of the Holy Spirit; no man has any say or interference in it. All ministries and gifts are of similar status and importance in God’s eyes; there is nothing to say or teach about any of the gifts or ministries being of greater or lesser importance than any other. But on the basis of the relative utility of the ministries and gifts in the Church, i.e., which are used more often and which not as often, in 1 Corinthians 12:28, a sequential list has been given. In this list at the top are the gifts and ministries related to the ministry of God’s Word, and the last gift in the list is the ministry and gift of ‘tongues’ i.e., of other languages. Then, at the end of the chapter, in verse 31 the Christian Believers are encouraged to “earnestly desire” to be of best use in the Church; but this verse is misinterpreted and misused to say that a Believer should ask for “best” gifts according to their desire, as if there are varying degrees of gifts, and gifts can be changed according to a person’s discretion.

Besides 1 Corinthians 12, there are other places in the Bible as well where teachings about Spiritual gifts have been given. One such portion is Romans chapter 12. In this chapter God the Holy Spirit has had teachings about the Spiritual gifts written by Paul with a somewhat different perspective than in Corinthians. Like in the letter to Corinthians, in Romans too, not only are the Spiritual gifts mentioned, but also using the human body metaphorically, all Church members have been exhorted to function together in unity, as members of one body and each other. For this functioning, in Romans some essential spiritual things and perspectives have been given. Before coming to using the body metaphorically and instructing about the utilization of the Spiritual gifts, in the opening verses of this chapter, God the Holy Spirit has instructed to adopt and maintain a correct spiritual perspective regarding using the Spiritual gifts - which is quite natural and expected, since it is impossible to carry out a Spiritual Ministry with a worldly and temporal attitude and perspective. If one has to please God and receive blessings from Him, then it is imperative to come out of the worldly and temporal perspective and come into the Spiritual one, a perspective that is as per God’s desire. Only then can we understand God’s point-of-view and fulfill it, so that we and our works are acceptable to God, and He is pleased with them.

For this reason, the Holy Spirit begins this chapter with the exhortation through Paul, “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God” (Romans 12:1-2). There are some things to take note of in these two verses:

  • Verse 1 begins with reminding the Christian Believer about the mercy of God. to understand this better, this should be seen with the preceding verses. In chapter 11, particularly towards its end, the greatness of God and His universal power and glory have been mentioned. In comparison to this glorious and exalted stature of God, His being the supreme, omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent One, when man considers his own puny, sinful, and unacceptable condition before God, then man realizes that there is nothing in him that God should pay any attention towards him, converse with him, or have anything to do with him. But still, since God loves all the people of the whole world, wants to have them all come into fellowship with Him, give everyone the honor of being His children (John 1:12-13), therefore the opening verse of this chapter is, “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God…”. The implication is that for the Spiritual Ministry and proper utilization of the Spiritual gifts, man should not take pride in or rely upon his own abilities, physical power and prowess, and skills. Instead, man, being aware of his own Spiritual inabilities should come before God in an attitude of humility, submission, and obedience and should do what God instructs him to do bearing in mind God’s grace and mercy towards him, instead of trying to get God do what man wants done from Him.

  • Then, in the second part of the verse, the Holy Spirit calls for the Christian Believer to offer himself as a living sacrifice to God, and calls doing this as “your reasonable service.” Here the Old Testament imagery of offering sacrifices to God for being accepted as His people, receiving forgiveness from Him, and for worshiping God has been brought to mind. In the Law given by God, there was a way for offering each kind of sacrifice, and a prescribed form of worship; nothing was arbitrary or according to any man’s decision, discretion, or preference. There was another important thing about the sacrifice being offered, whatever be the sacrifice or the nature and purpose of the sacrifice, that which once had been offered before God, would not return back into the hands of the person who was offering the sacrifice! Either it was totally burnt and turned to ashes, or it was handed over to the Priests for their use. Similarly, the life that has once been consecrated to the Lord God, surrendered for His use, cannot be taken back from Him and used again for temporal and worldly things. If it is being taken back, if it is being used again for temporal and worldly things, for physical lusts and desires, then it means that the life had not actually been “sacrificed'' i.e., consecrated and surrendered to the Lord God for His use. Therefore, such a life will never be useful for the Lord God and will never glorify Him, no matter what the person may say, do, or show externally. Also, this dual utilization - for the world, body and temporal things, as well as spiritual things will not be valid or acceptable, and such service will not be considered a “spiritual service” acceptable to God.

  • Then verse 2 says about the Christian worker that the change that has come within him because of his coming into the Christian Faith, should be externally and practically evident by the renewing of his mind, his changed life, his changed attitude and behavior. These are the external evidence of the inner transformation that has happened in him. Other than this no other proof of a person’s having become a Spiritual person i.e., a child of God, and the Holy Spirit having come to reside in him has been given in the Bible - a transformed heart and mind is shown and proven by a changed life and behavior; not by jumping, shouting, dramatic actions, making strange non-understandable noises etc.

  • Those, in whom this transformation becomes evident, then they also become the people who start discerning the will of God; and this is a process that continually keeps carrying on and improving in the person’s life. As one is more and more “transformed by the renewing of your mind,” he starts discerning and learning the will of God more and more; and this happens through his experiences of remaining in fellowship with God.

If you are a Christian Believer, and want to become useful for God, then learn to live a life surrendered and obedient to Him. No one can please God by fulfilling religious rituals, ceremonies, works, and festivals (Acts 15:10; 1 Peter 1:18-19). Along with giving you salvation, God has also kept some good works for you to do (Ephesians 2:10); He has placed His Holy Spirit within you for your help and guidance, who always remains with you; He has placed His Living Word in your hands; and He has made you a member of His heavenly family, and of His Body, the Church. Now for you to properly and worthily utilize these resources that God has provided you, you have to follow Romans 12:1-2, so that your works are acceptable to Him and you receive His blessings. Except for obedience to God, there is no other way of pleasing Him and being blessed by Him (1 Samuel 15:22).

If you are still thinking of yourself as being a Christian, a child of God, entitled to a place in heaven, because of being born in a particular family and having fulfilled the religious rites and rituals prescribed under your religion or denomination since your childhood, then you too need to come out of your misunderstanding of Biblical facts and start learning, understanding, and living according to what the Word of God says, instead of what any denominational creed says or teaches. Make the necessary corrections in your life now while you have the time and opportunity; lest by the time you realize your mistake, it is too late to do anything about it.

If you are still not Born Again, have not obtained salvation, or have not asked the Lord Jesus for forgiveness for your sins, then you have the opportunity to do so right now. A short prayer said voluntarily with a sincere heart, with heartfelt repentance for your sins, and a fully submissive attitude, “Lord Jesus, I confess that I have disobeyed You, and have knowingly or unknowingly, in mind, in thought, in attitude, and in deeds, committed sins. I believe that you have fully borne the punishment of my sins by your sacrifice on the cross, and have paid the full price of those sins for all eternity. Please forgive my sins, change my heart and mind towards you, and make me your disciple, take me with you." God longs for your company and wants to see you blessed, but to make this possible, is your personal decision. Will you not say this prayer now, while you have the time and opportunity to do so - the decision is yours.

Gifts of The Holy Spirit in Christian Ministry – 24

Conclusion - 1 Corinthians 12:28-31

In the previous articles we have been seeing about the Spiritual gifts listed in 1 Corinthians 12:28. This verse starts by telling us “God has appointed these in the church…”, and then goes on to state the appointed ministries and Spiritual gifts for use in the Church. There are somethings in this opening sentence of this verse that should be taken note of and always kept in mind. They are:

  • As has been stated in 1 Corinthians 12:11, all Spiritual gifts are given by God. It is written in Ephesians 2:10 that God has already determined some good works or the other for every Christian Believer. To enable and help God’s people to carry out those good works worthily and properly, God the Holy Spirit gives every Christian Believer appropriate Spiritual gifts. These gifts are not given according to the desire of the person, but according to the assignment given by God; and He is the only one who decides about the gifts – who gets what, and why.

  • These gifts are meant to be utilized for the benefit of the people of the Church, as has been stated in 1 Corinthians 12:7. None of the Spiritual gifts given by God the Holy Spirit are meant for any personal use by anyone, nor for using them to show any person as being special, extra-ordinary, better or more important than others, or more useful for God in any manner. Every Spiritual gift has been given for being used to edify the Church, to benefit others. No person can claim that he has received anything special or better than others. Every gift is from God, is of equal importance, none is lesser or better than any other, and no Christian Believer is of lesser or more importance than any other in God’s eyes, so that God would give him something over and above another. Every Christian Believer is of equal status and importance in God’s eyes, God loves them all the same. Everyone has come to faith in the Lord through repentance of their sins and asking forgiveness from the Lord Jesus Christ for them, not by virtue of any special characteristic or ability.

  • For the utilization of different Spiritual gifts, God has appointed different people. In other words, all the gifts have not been given to any one person, nor everyone has been given any one gift. Whatever ministry God has determined for each person, accordingly the Spiritual gift too has been given. From phrase “God has appointed” in the opening sentence of verse 28 it is apparent that no one has chosen or earned any ministry or gift; whatever anyone has, it is appointed from God and according to God’s overall plans. Every person’s blessing is through his fulfilling his assigned ministry, worthily utilizing the gift given to him, and using his ministry and gift to glorify God; and not through a person’s desiring and pleading for a particular ministry or gift, that someone else may be having.

After this initial statement is the list of gifts according to their use in the Church, the gifts required and used often are given first, and those required and used less are given towards the end. But in their place and utility, each ministry and gift is as important as any other, none is greater or lesser than any other. The gift used the least, speaking in other ‘tongues’ i.e., languages has been named last, and the gifts used in the ministry of God’s Word in the Church have been placed first in this list. But if a foreign preacher were to come, and a person who can understand and speak his language is required to translate and interpret for him, then this last mentioned gift will have the same precedence as these first three. Therefore, no ministry and its related gifts are any less than any other. But here they have been listed according to their day-to-day utility in the functioning of the Church.

The fact of different gifts being given to different people has then been explained in verse 29 to 31 through rhetorical questions; making it clear that no one has been given all the gifts, nor everyone has been given any one of the gifts. In the original Greek language, these questions have been written in the negative sense, implying that the answer to each of these questions is “No!” Through the use of these rhetorical questions, the Holy Spirit, through Paul has clearly and firmly established that no Christian Believer has been given all the gifts, nor has every Christian Believer been given one gift, i.e., one particular gift will not be seen in every Believer; to expect this to happen is going contrary to God’s Word. Therefore, those who teach wrong doctrines and give false teachings in the name of the Holy Spirit, for them to emphatically preach and teach that every Born-Again Believer should speak in ‘tongues’ and that is the proof of being Born Again, is to ignore the teachings of God’s Word and to go contrary to God’s Word, mislead people through misinterpreting and misusing God’s Word. The Holy Spirit, who is the Spirit of Truth (John 14:17), will never say or teach or do anything that is contrary to God’s Word. Moreover, the ‘tongues’ these proponents of wrong teachings talk about, in fact are known and spoken languages of various regions of the earth (Acts 2:1-11). The Lord Jesus has said that Satan is the father of lies, there is no truth in him, and every lie is from him (John 8:44), therefore all these wrong doctrines and false teachings that they so emphatically preach and teach are not from the Holy Spirit, but from Satan, a satanic deception, from which these people should not only come out but also expose, and stop preaching to others.

After this comes verse 31, which is very often used by these proponents of wrong teachings related to the Holy Spirit, to justify their wrong doctrines and false teachings about asking for Spiritual gifts according to one’s desire, which we have already seen earlier, is not a correct notion on their part. When we see and interpret this verse in its context and understand its meaning, then it becomes apparent that what has been stated here is in context of asking for being of best use in the Church, not for changing the Spiritual gifts. When this verse is seen in context of the other verses of this chapter, it becomes evident that the phrase “earnestly desire the best gifts” used here is for the “best” in use or most often required gift, i.e., the ministry of the Word. In other words, through Paul, the Holy Spirit is telling the Christian Believers to desire to be those who would be of the best possible or maximum possible use in the Church, i.e., earnestly desire to be of best possible use for the Lord. If this verse is taken to mean or understand that ministries and Spiritual gifts can be greater or lesser, then it renders vain the teaching in verses 12-27; it implies that in the body of Christ, the Church, not everybody is of the same significance, and the Holy Spirit has differentiated by giving lesser or greater gifts to different people, and that God can be manipulated to change His decisions by men. And none of these implications are consistent with the Word of God and its teachings; hence are absolutely unacceptable. Moreover, those who use this verse to support that this verse affirms asking for gifts according to one’s choice, then take note that all that this verse is saying is to earnestly desire; there is no assurance, stated or implied, in this verse that whatever a person earnestly desires, God is bound to fulfill it. Also, there is no example anywhere in God’s Word of the ministry and gift of a Christian Believer being changed because of their desiring and asking; nor is any such teaching mentioned anywhere else in God’s Word, by any other writer. Therefore, teaching to have any such desires in the name of the Holy Spirit is wrong, is not from God, and is a misuse of God’s Word, misleading the people in God’s name.

If you are a Christian Believer, then take note and understand how important and essential it is for you to take everything in God’s Word in its context, keeping in mind the meanings of the words used in the original language, and understand the actual meaning and interpretation; instead of falling for the contrived concepts and false teachings of the preachers of falsehood, and get ensnared by their deception (2 Corinthians 2:11). Because to misinterpret and misuse the Word of God is a very tried and tested, old strategy of Satan (2 Corinthians 11:3, 13-15), which he has been using since the Garden of Eden (Genesis 3:1-6); so much so, that Satan even tried to use this against the Lord Jesus (Matthew 4:1-11). If Satan is successful in using this strategy against you, then you will think and feel that you are on the right path, whereas actually Satan will be leading you astray into destruction, and by the time you come to realize the truth, it will be too late.

Gifts of The Holy Spirit in Christian Ministry – 23

Users of the Gifts of the Holy Spirit - Administrations

The Holy Spirit has given a list of the Spiritual gifts in 1 Corinthians 12:28 that have been given to the Christian Believers, to enable them to fulfill their ministries and carry out their work worthily in the Church. We have been considering the various Spiritual gifts given in this list according to their utilization in their Churches in the previous articles. We have already seen about the last gift of this list, i.e., about tongues, in the beginning, since there are many misinterpretations and misunderstandings about it amongst the Christians, and false teachings about this gift are always being spread. Today we will consider the remaining gift of this list - the gift of “Administrations” and see what God’s Word the Bible has to say about it.

The word in the original Greek language translated as “administrations”, means one who like the captain of a ship “keeps control, manages, and gives the direction” of the ship. Various translations of the Bible express this ministry through different translations; although the most commonly used translation of this word is “administrations”, the other words used are, Managing, Directions, Governing, Guiding, Leadership, Ministrations, etc. This is an interesting but important fact that in nearly all the English translations of the Bible, the word used is in plural, i.e., this ministry involves fulfilling of various responsibilities together, by one person, or more than one person working together to carry out these responsibilities. The meaning of this word is to take care, manage, guide, conduct, and take responsibility for the Assembly and fulfill that responsibility. In the Christian Assemblies some other words have also been used to express the carrying out of these responsibilities of the Church, e.g., “Elders” (1 Timothy 5:17), “Pastors” (Ephesians 4:11), “Ministers” (1 Corinthians 3:5), “Bishop” (1 Timothy 3:1, 2), etc. It is very important to take note and understand that all of these words, and the word “Administrations” used in 1 Corinthians 12:28, are not meant to convey holding a title or a position of authority and control over the other members of the Church, but as a helper and minister, to serve and help others in the Church, to see that no one in the Church is neglected in any manner, everyone gets proper opportunities and helps, to grow spiritually. We should also understand that here in 1 Corinthians 12:28, the word “Administrations” shows the collective responsibilities, whereas through other words used in the other letters, the various people who work together to collectively carry out this function have been mentioned.

There is another similarly important and interesting fact about the people given this gift in God’s Word - they have always been mentioned in plural form, even though it may be one Church that is being addressed. The implication is that in the New Testament Churches, according to the instructions given by God the Holy Spirit the conduct, managing, and taking care of the Churches was never the responsibility of one single person, i.e., no one person was ever the one and only, the whole and sole “in-charge” of any Church. It was always a collective responsibility of different people to function together and fulfill these responsibilities in the Church. No one person was ever made the solitary in-charge of any Church, and was never meant to authoritatively control and direct the members of the Church according to his own will and understanding. Moreover, to whom this gift and responsibility was given, they were always to fulfill it in the fear of the Lord and in the understanding that they will give an account to the Lord about this, “The elders who are among you I exhort, I who am a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that will be revealed: Shepherd the flock of God which is among you, serving as overseers, not by compulsion but willingly, not for dishonest gain but eagerly; nor as being lords over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock; and when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that does not fade away” (1 Peter 5:1-4). Do take note that as the Holy Spirit had it written by Peter, God’s instruction is to carry out this ministry humbly not authoritatively, and by being examples; and no one was to use it for personal gain or benefits. Those engaged in this ministry had to carry it out to please the “Chief Shepherd”, i.e., the Lord Jesus Christ and with the realization that one day they will have to give an account of their work to the Lord. Their accountability was to the Lord Jesus and He will reward them for their work; they were not to work to appease or please any higher ranking official, nor to seek their favor or honor and commendation from them.

We also see that those who were given the responsibility of “Administrations” in those initial Christian Churches, were to have certain specific characteristics and attributes, only then was the managing of the Church entrusted to them. These characteristics and attributes related to their personal, family, and spiritual life (1 Timothy 3:1-10; Titus 1:5-11). There is no instruction, indication, or example of people being elected by voting for these responsibilities in the Bible; neither is any count of how many should they be in number given in the Bible, through the use of plural, it has been indicated that they should be more than one. Neither does God’s Word say that amongst persons holding these responsibilities, there should be any positional hierarchy; all had the same status. Contrary to a popular notion, there is no indication in the Bible that Peter was the first “Leader” or over-all In-Charge of the First Church, and later came to be called the “Pope”, which office was then passed on to others; nor are the other offices related to the “Pope” mentioned in the Bible.

We have examples of how these people entrusted with the gift of “Administrations” functioned in those initial Christian Churches, in Acts 6:1-6 and Acts 15. From these examples of the functioning of these people having the responsibility of “Administrations”, it is clear that they personally gave the primacy to studying God’s Word, prayers, and keeping their spiritual lives right in the sight of God, and carried out their responsibilities according to God’s instructions. Their decisions were taken after a frank and open discussion mutually, being one-minded about it. There was no feeling of being superior or inferior, ego, or jealousy towards each other. This is only possible when everyone strives to fulfill his responsibility to please the Lord, not any man; and to function according to the instructions of the Lord, in fear of Him, with the realization of eventually being accountable to Him, and maintain the primary place of God’s Word and its obedience in his life (Galatians 1:10).

If you are a Christian Believer, and God has given you some responsibility in His Church, if God wants to accomplish something through you, then it is absolutely essential for you to first learn to live your life not in fear and obedience of any man but in the fear of God, in obedience to Him, knowing you are accountable to Him, and to always keep God’s Word in mind about whatever you do. Only then will you be able to fulfill your responsibility worthily, and be able to please and glorify God through your life. But if you give priority to pleasing men, then very soon Satan will beguile you into taking decisions that will be harmful for you as well people of the Church, and others too. As he did in the Garden of Eden to have Eve commit sin, Satan always tries to mislead people into disobeying God, function according to their own thinking and understanding; he brings very tempting and seemingly very good things before men, creates a doubt about God and God’s instructions, provokes them to take their own decisions and disobey God. This is when and where the decision about our works being acceptable to God, our commitment and submission to God, the actual state of our faith, obedience, and integrity towards God and His Word is made; and this then determines our being useful for God, our receiving the eternal rewards, honor and glory from Him (John 5:41-44).
