English Translation

The Church & Believer - Provision To Be Firm & Stable

Seven things, given in Acts 2:38-42, are seen in the life of truly Born-Again Christian Believer, from the moment he becomes a part of the Church of the Lord Jesus. We have been considering these in the previous articles, and have seen the first three so far. These three are - First, repentance for and asking the Lord Jesus’s forgiveness for sins, and accepting the Lord Jesus as savior; Second, witnessing for the inner transformation done by the Lord externally, publicly, through baptism; Third, being surrendered and obedient to the Lord, separating out from the world and worldliness and being devoted to the work of the Lord, at any cost. It is evident that without a true and commitment and full surrender to the Lord, doing any of these is not possible for anyone, because it is not possible to remain true and committed to the Lord in adverse circumstances and trying situations without having the power of the Holy Spirit. And, the power of the Holy Spirit is only with the factual disciples of the Lord Jesus; not with those who have joined the Church through some man-made process or institutional activity. This by itself brings out the difference between the truly committed people of the Lord and those not joined to the Church by the Lord, but who have joined the Church on their own.

In Acts 2:41, a very important change in lives has been shown, consequent to the preaching of Peter, “Then those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them.” After the first three things, the next four are seen in Acts 2:42 as things in which they “continued steadfastly” i.e., these were continually seen in the lives of those who were joined with the disciples of the Lord. Having been joined to the Church of the Lord Jesus, these four things became an integral part and priority of their lives. These four things are, “apostles' doctrine [i.e., studying and learning the Word of God from the disciples of the Lord], and fellowship [i.e., remaining in the company of Lord’s people or God’s children], in the breaking of bread [i.e., participating in Holy Communion with Lord’s disciples], and in prayers [i.e., communicating with the Lord God at a personal level].” These four things are like four pillars for the Christian life and the Church, to provide it stability and firmness, against the wiles and attacks of the devil. If in Christian Believer’s life, any one of these pillars becomes weak, or breaks down, his Christian life will immediately become weak and unstable. In whichever local Assembly or Church these four are not seen as being practiced or adhered to “steadfastly”, that Assembly or Church will become weak, will become unfruitful for the Lord, and Satan will have ample opportunity to do his work there and disrupt it. To indicate their collective application and importance, they have been stated together in one sentence, along with the fact that the Christian Believers “continued steadfastly” in them.

In the personal lives of most of those who call themselves Christians, and even in their collective gatherings, in their “churches”, the importance and adherence to these four are things is usually not seen, or not seen with the intensity or steadfastness it ought to be present. Rather, what is seen is that usually either one or two of these four is practised as a formality. This by itself is a great proof that their lives are not really joined with the Lord; they are attached to the Church externally, only for a ‘show’, and not really. In reality they are still joined to the world, they are still the people of the world, not the Lord; therefore, they give more importance to the world and the things of the world, and follow them. If they are able to find some time after their involvement with the things of the world, then to show their association with the Lord, as a formality, they may perfunctorily fulfill one thing or the other. If we consider these seven things in the order they have been given, then it is apparent that the person who really repents of sins and is transformed within, witnesses of this inner transformation publicly by baptism, and separates himself away from the things of the world and worldliness, he will automatically also have a natural desire to remain steadfastly involved in these four things. From the next article, we will look in some detail about each of these four pillars of Christian life, individually.

In those who call themselves “Christians” but actually are not, there is a common excuse found for not fulfilling these four things - “there is no time, how then can we do them?” After spending their time and energies in things of the world and worldliness, they have no time or energy left to spend with the Lord, to be useful for the Lord. Then another excuse is added to this one, “The Lord knows our hearts and life; He knows that we do love Him and care for Him, but are unable to give time to Him. He knows and understands our condition, He is loving and gracious, and will reward us according to His grace and compassion.” But these people fail to realize and understand what will happen to them on the day of judgement, when they are to stand before the Lord and give an account of their lives to Him? What answer will they have when the Lord says to them, “Yes, I am gracious and compassionate; that is why for so many years I patiently kept coming to you over and over again, to have fellowship with you, to give you rest and blessings, to help you and guide you; I kept asking for your time to strengthen you and lift you out of the temporal into the eternal; I kept sending messages to you through my disciples, my children; I kept pleading with you to set your priorities right. But you spurned all my attempts, and chose the perishing world and its things; you always gave more importance to the world and worldliness than Me; for you the temporal benefits of the world were always more important than the eternal blessings and benefits I could give you. You well knew that the things you are laboring for, striving after, and living for will all be destroyed one day; none of them, not even a fraction, will go with you. You also knew that the rewards that will be given to you at the end, will be according to what you have done for Me, not for the world. But still you continued to give priority and importance to the world, you remained useful for the world, never for Me. Now, this is the day of my fair and equitable judgement, about which I kept warning you, and wanted to prepare you for. But you never paid due heed to my warnings and teachings. Therefore, today, according to your own decisions, that you have taken knowledgeably, willingly, and being fully aware of everything, you will reap a harvest of what you have sown in your lives. You have sown seeds of perishing, and will reap a harvest of destruction.”

The time, efforts, and labor put in for the Lord are never a waste or in vain (1 Corinthians 15:58); rather it is like an investment that has a guaranteed return of at least a hundredfold along with eternal blessings (Mark 10:29-30). Those who give their time and labour to the Lord as a priority, the Lord besides His eternal blessings, also gives them back enough time, strength, and wisdom to be successful and growing in their work for the world, and continue to be useful and fruitful for the Lord and grow in Him as well. One only has to step out in faith and move in the right direction.

If you are a Christian Believer, then check where you stand in your life in relation to these seven things, and evaluate your life and priorities, while you have the time and opportunity from the Lord. What place do the instructions and commandments of the Lord, and their obedience have in your life? If the Lord Jesus, His Word, and His obedience are not the priority of your life, and you are more inclined towards the world and gains of the world, then, very seriously review and re-assess your life and correct everything that needs to be corrected, before it is too late.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord Jesus, then to ensure your eternal life and heavenly rewards, take a decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now. Wherever there is surrender and obedience towards the Lord Jesus, the Lord’s blessings and safety are also there. If you are still not Born Again, have not obtained salvation, or have not asked the Lord Jesus for forgiveness for your sins, then you have the opportunity to do so right now. A short prayer said voluntarily with a sincere heart, with heartfelt repentance for your sins, and a fully submissive attitude, “Lord Jesus, I confess that I have disobeyed You, and have knowingly or unknowingly, in mind, in thought, in attitude, and in deeds, committed sins. I believe that you have fully borne the punishment of my sins by your sacrifice on the cross, and have paid the full price of those sins for all eternity. Please forgive my sins, change my heart and mind towards you, and make me your disciple, take me with you." God longs for your company and wants to see you blessed, but to make this possible, is your personal decision. Will you not say this prayer now, while you have the time and opportunity to do so - the decision is yours.

The Church of Lord Jesus - Separated from the World & Worldliness

Once a person gets joined to the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ, in the life of that true and actual Christian Believer, the presence of certain things becomes necessary and important. In the life of the person known as a person of the Lord God, the presence of these things demonstrates and proves that he really is a person of God and has been joined into the Church by the Lord. Through these things, that person grows in his Christian life, remains useful for the Church, and through him others too are attracted to the Church. In Acts 2, with the establishing of the first Church, in the lives of those initial Christian Believers, these seven things were seen; and since then, till now, all over the world, in every true and actual member of the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ, these seven things have remained the hallmark of every Born-Again child of God (Acts 2:39). We see these seven things in Acts 2:38-42, and we have seen the first two, given in Acts 2:38 - repentance from sins, and publicly witnessing about coming to faith in Christ Jesus through baptism, in the previous articles.

The third thing is given in Acts 2:40 - “And with many other words he testified and exhorted them, saying, "Be saved from this perverse generation"”; i.e., separate from the evil people and opponents of the Lord, and remain obedient to the Lord God. The life of a true Christian Believer is a life of living in accordance with the Word of God, obedient to the Lord, separated from the world, worldliness, and its temporal things. A Christian Believer is to glorify the Lord God in and through all situations and circumstances of life, and always be involved in propagating the gospel, telling the world about the works of the Lord.

Consider some Bible verses in this context:

  • When the Jewish religious leaders forbade Peter and John to say or preach anything about the Lord Jesus, their response was: “And they called them and commanded them not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus. But Peter and John answered and said to them, "Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you more than to God, you judge. For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard"” (Acts 4:18-20).

  • When they were once again brought before them, and were questioned about continuing to preach the Gospel of the Lord Jesus, they answered, “saying, "Did we not strictly command you not to teach in this name? And look, you have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine, and intend to bring this Man's blood on us!" But Peter and the other apostles answered and said: "We ought to obey God rather than men"” (Acts 5:28-29).

  • And, when they were beaten up for this answer, there reaction was: “And they agreed with him, and when they had called for the apostles and beaten them, they commanded that they should not speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go. So, they departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for His name. And daily in the temple, and in every house, they did not cease teaching and preaching Jesus as the Christ” (Acts 5:40-42).

  • After the martyrdom of Stephen, a great persecution came upon the first Church, and the Believers were scattered all over; but even in this persecution and being scattered, their activity was, “At that time a great persecution arose against the church which was at Jerusalem; and they were all scattered throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria, except the apostles. Therefore, those who were scattered went everywhere preaching the word” (Acts 8:1, 4). They did not give up on the very thing for which they were persecuted and scattered, they continued to fulfill their responsibility of propagating the gospel, wherever they went.

We see from these examples that how great a transformation had come in those initial Christian Believers, and how committed they had become to their responsibility to their faith. In every situation, every circumstance, even while suffering persecution, they never compromised with the world, or with the people of the world. Rather, even in adverse situations, they lived in obedience to the Lord Jesus, and were willing to suffer everything for Him. In this context, for the instructing the Christian Believers, the Holy Spirit has got it written:

  • “and He died for all, that those who live should live no longer for themselves, but for Him who died for them and rose again” (2 Corinthians 5:15).

  • “Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world--the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life--is not of the Father but is of the world. And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever” (1 John 2:15-17).

  • “Adulterers and adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God” (James 4:4).

That is why the Lord Jesus Christ had said, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me” (Luke 9:23). Today in the field of God, the ‘tares’ sown by Satan, masquerading as “Christians” are spreading many false teachings and beguiling people to live a comfortable life, even compromising with the world. When the Israelites were brought out of Egypt, a great ‘mixed-multitude’ also came out with them (Exodus 12:38). This great multitude lived and moved with the Israelites; they too ate of the manna, and enjoyed the safety and care of the Lord God. But this mixed-multitude was a cause for much trouble and suffering for the Israelites, made the Israelites suffer the wrath of God (Numbers 11:4-6, 10, 33); and eventually, at the time of the Israelites entering Canaan, there is no mention of this ‘mixed-multitude;’ probably, along with the rebellious Israelites, they too perished, not being worthy to enter the Promised Land of blessings. The same fate awaits these “tares” who are creating troubles and problems for the Christian Believers presently.

If you are a Christian Believer, then make it point to remain true and obedient to the Lord and His instructions, His commandments; that is the only way to receive and grow in your blessings and safety. In today’s Christendom, there is no dearth of “false believers” infiltrated into the Church by Satan and his angels. These false believers, though living in the name of the Lord, as ‘Christians’, always act and behave like the people of the world, compromise with the world, and for personal benefits and comforts do not hesitate in disobeying the Lord; they not only do this but also provoke and instigate the actual Believers to do the same, and obstruct the spiritual growth and life of the Christian Believers, like the mixed-multitude did with the Israelites. To every true and actual Christian Believer, the commandment of the Lord, since the beginning of the Church is “Be saved from this perverse generation” (Acts 2:40).

Witnessing through Baptism

We have seen in the previous articles that no one can join the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ on his own through fulfilling any rituals or ceremonies. Just as the Lord God has determined and established everything related to His Church, and He Himself manages and directs the functioning of His Church, similarly, it is the Lord who adds people to His Church (Acts 2:47). He has determined and given the process, the way of how a person can join His Church. Since the establishing of the first Church, till date, all over the world, it is this one process that is followed for people to join the Lord’s Church. There are seven steps in this process, that have been given in Acts 2:38-42. The first two steps are given in Acts 2:38, of which the first, every person individually repenting of their sins, we have seen in the previous article. In that article we have also seen that the actual repentance that has been stated here is much different than the “the sorrow of the world produces death” i.e., a formal recitation of some words and passages that is commonly seen in Christendom, in many Christian organizations and denominational Churches, usually at the time of certain rituals, e.g., taking the Holy Communion. We have seen and understood the characteristics and effects of the true repentance which is mandatory for joining the Church of the Lord, and how to identify it. Today we will consider the second step of this process and also the second thing mentioned in Acts 2:38 - everyone who repents should take baptism in the name of the Lord Jesus.

In God’s Word the Bible, whenever taking baptism has been mentioned, certain related important things have been mentioned as well; and it is because of overlooking these associated important things that many wrong doctrines and false teachings have come about and been spread about baptism. The first thing we need to understand is why should baptism be taken? Only after properly understanding this can we really understand the way it is to be administered and under what names it is to be administered, etc. Once a person repents of his sins, asks the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of his sins, surrenders his life to the Lord willingly and fully, and commits himself to living in obedience to the Lord and His Word, after that baptism is only the external public witnessing to this inner decision and transformation that has come about in the person.

Consider carefully the sequence stated by the Lord Jesus in Matthew 28:18-20. Here we see, in the Lord Jesus’s own words that His disciples were to first go and make other disciples, and then baptize those who became His disciples. In the events of Acts 2 also, we see that after the preaching of Peter, only those who repented and accepted the Lord Jesus as their savior were baptized (Acts 2:41). On the way to Damascus, after Paul, then called Saul, first accepted Jesus as “Lord” after that he was baptized (Acts 9:5, 18). Similarly, in Acts 19:1-5, from the conversation between Paul and the people, it is quite clear that they had already believed in the Lord Jesus, and then they were baptized. In all these examples the same sequence is given - first become the disciples of the Lord Jesus, i.e., accept Him as Savior, and then as disciples, get baptized - always, in the Bible, only those who had repented and become disciples were baptized.

John the Baptist used to baptize in the region around the river Jordan, and the Lord Jesus too was baptized in that area (John 1:28; 3:23; Matthew 3:6, 13-16; Mark 1:5, 9-11; Luke 3:3). There is mention of the Lord and His disciples too baptizing (John 3:22; 4:1-2), but in which river, stream, pond, or water-body they baptized has not been mentioned. Phillip baptized in Samaria, but again, in which river, stream, pond, or water-body they baptized has not been mentioned. Later, Phillip baptized the Ethiopian Eunuch in some water-body on the road-side (Acts 8:36-37). But what is clear from these examples is that baptism could be given in both, flowing or still water; there is no necessity that it has to be administered only in a river. From these examples, another fact that is quite apparent is that wherever baptism was given, it was always in a place where people could go inside the water and come out of it. At no place in the Bible has the method of sprinkling water for baptizing, or of someone dipping their finger in water and then making the sign of the Cross on the head or forehead been mentioned. Also, there is no mention or example of any infant, baby, or child being baptized; always it has been adults who voluntarily came forward to get baptized, only they have been baptized.

Now, those who have become the disciples of the Lord Jesus, i.e., those who have received the Lord Jesus as their personal savior and have surrendered their lives to Him, they have already become the children of God (John 1:12-13), and are destined to be in heaven from the moment they have come into faith in the Lord Jesus, even before their having taken baptism. Biblically speaking, baptism neither saves anybody, nor makes anyone righteous and acceptable in the eyes of God. Baptism is nothing more than a method of giving a public testimony of a person’s coming into faith in the Lord Jesus and the inner change that has come into him because of his faith in the Lord. Take note, the thief that repented while hanging on the cross, received forgiveness from the Lord and went to heaven - without being baptized. There will be countless people all over the world, who have accepted the Lord Jesus as savior, believed in Him, have repented of their sins, but due to some reason, due to some problem or impediment, could not be baptized despite being desirous of and willing for it, e.g., after being involved in an accident, or being wounded on a battlefield and taking their last breaths; or having accepted Jesus as Lord in some desert or snow-bound area where they could not be baptized; or having heard the gospel in some remote distant area through radio transmission, where there was no one to baptize them - there can be so many different situations and circumstances in which it may not be possible for a person to get baptized, although wanting to get it done. Will all such people be denied entry into heaven just because despite having repented of sins, having come into faith and having accepted the Lord Jesus as savior, due to some earthly situation or circumstance, they could not get baptized? If the thief on the cross could repent and go to heaven, without getting baptized, then why can’t anyone else?

Also take note that like Simon the sorcerer (Acts 8:9-13, 18-24), in every local Church there are numerous people who have taken baptism ritualistically, but have never ever truly repented of their sins; no change has come in their lives, they are still living in their sins, in worldliness. They partake of the Lord’s Table, are members of their local Church, celebrate the traditions, feasts, and festivals, but also live a life of compromising with the world and in sin. Of what benefit is their baptism for them? Has their baptism put God under a compulsion to accept them into heaven, although their lives are demonstrating that they never came into faith in the Lord Jesus?

Another point of contention related to baptism is whether it has been administered “in the name of Jesus”, or, “in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit”! According to Matthew 28:19, in the words of the Lord Jesus Christ, baptism was to be given “in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit” - all three of them are God, co-equal in every manner, none is less than or different than the other. This “Triune” God, when He was born on earth as a man, His incarnation was named “Jesus” by divine instructions (Matthew 1:21). In other words, “Jesus” is the name of the Triune God that depicts His being the Savior of the world. Therefore, whether one takes the name of all three, or of anyone, it is the same God who is being honored and obeyed. So then, what difference will it make if baptism is given “in the name of Jesus”, or, “in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit”; more so, when as we have seen above baptism has nothing to do with obtaining salvation? This wrong teaching has been spread by the “Jesus Only” group, because they do not believe in the Triune God. Since they Believe only in the Lord Jesus, therefore wherever possible they create doubts and confusions about the teachings related to the Holy Trinity, i.e., the Triune God; they create and spread concepts that speak against the Biblical fact of Trinity. One of their false doctrines is this confusion they have spread about the name under which baptism is to administered.

If one carefully considers these issues, it becomes apparent that through trying to show baptism to be valid or invalid because of the name it has been administered in, the place it has been administered in, etc. Satan has tried to beguile people away into vain arguments and dissensions, into trusting in righteousness of works. These are satanic ploys to turn the minds of people away from the salvation by grace of God through simple faith in the Lord Jesus Christ; to get them entangled in trying to be acceptable to God through vain works and methodologies; to get entangled in unnecessary disputes, keep fighting amongst themselves, instead of preaching and propagating the gospel, as they ought to be doing. By keeping these things in mind, it is clear that what is important is taking of baptism to fulfill the commandment of the Lord Jesus; and not what names were being spoken while administering it and whether it was taken in flowing or still water. Therefore, besides what the Lord Jesus has said and instructed, no other unnecessary and unintended importance should be attached to baptism. Being baptized is a commandment of the Lord, and obeying the Lord brings blessings. But baptism neither gives salvation; nor, not being baptized take salvation away.

If you are a Christian Believer, then as instructed by the Lord Jesus, it is essential that every Born-Again Believer take baptism at the first available opportunity - not to confirm or establish the salvation received by the grace of God, but to publicly witness for it. Whether this baptism is taken “in the name of Jesus”, or, “in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit”; in flowing water or still water - will not impact the state of salvation of the person one way or the other. As it is for repentance, similarly for baptism too, taking or giving baptism is not a formality to be fulfilled, it is not merely for keeping a tradition. Baptism has its purpose and importance, and other than what has been taught by the Lord, no other concepts and teachings should be attached to it and given undue importance.
