उपदेशक और शिक्षक

हमें इन सेवकाइयों के संदर्भ में एक और तथ्य का भी ध्यान रखना है; यद्यपि इफिसियों 4:11 में पाँच प्रकार के सेवक और सेवकाइयां दी गई हैं, किन्तु यह आवश्यक नहीं कि अलग-अलग व्यक्ति ही कलीसिया में इन अलग-अलग सेवकाइयों को करें। प्रभु यीशु के समान ही, एक ही व्यक्ति, भिन्न समयों पर, आवश्यकतानुसार, इन भिन्न सेवकाइयों का निर्वाह कर सकता था, और करता भी था, जैसा हमने ऊपर प्रभु यीशु के जीवन से देखा है। पौलुस ने लिखा, कि वह भिन्न सेवकाइयों को करता था: “मैं सच कहता हूं, झूठ नहीं बोलता, कि मैं इसी उद्देश्य से प्रचारक और प्रेरित और अन्यजातियों के लिये विश्वास और सत्य का उपदेशक ठहराया गया” (1 तीमुथियुस 2:7); “जिस के लिये मैं प्रचारक, और प्रेरित, और उपदेशक भी ठहरा” (2 तीमुथियुस 1:11)। याकूब ने, पतरस ने, यूहन्ना ने, नए नियम के सभी लेखकों ने, अपनी रचनाओं में सुसमाचार प्रचार भी किया, शिक्षाएं भी दीं, और भविष्य के समय से संबंधित भविष्यवाणियाँ भी लिखीं, तथा कलीसियाओं की अगुवाई भी की और उन के द्वारा हम कलीसिया के लोगों की देखभाल और रखवाली के बारे में भी देखते हैं। अर्थात, एक ही व्यक्ति एक या अधिक प्रकार की सेवकाइयां कर सकता है; सेवक की कार्य के लिए नियुक्ति नहीं, अपितु, कलीसिया में इन पाँचों प्रकार की सेवकाइयों का किया जाना, वचन की इन बातों का निर्वाह होना ही कलीसिया और मसीही जीवन की उन्नति के लिए आवश्यक है।

 

 यह रोचक बात है कि इस पद में प्रभु यीशु द्वारा की गई सेवकाइयों में से उन सेवकाइयों के लिए जिन से अपने आप को प्रमुख, या महत्वपूर्ण, या विशिष्ट दिखाया जा सके, जैसे कि प्रेरित, भविष्यद्वक्ता और भविष्यवाणी करना, वर्तमान में उनके लिए तो सामान्यतः लोग बहुत लालसा रखते हैं, उन्हें उपाधियों के समान प्रयोग करते हैं। किन्तु आज अपने आप ही या मनुष्यों और संस्थाओं द्वारा कलीसियाओं में उच्च पद और आदरणीय स्थानों पर आसीन होने की लालसा रखने वाले और उससे सांसारिक लाभ अर्जित करने वाले इन लोगों में सुसमाचार प्रचारक और शिक्षक होने के लिए सामान्यतः कोई रुचि नहीं होती है। आज शायद ही कोई ऐसा जन मिलेगा जो अपने आप को सुसमाचार प्रचारक या वचन का शिक्षक कहता हो। ऐसा संभवतः इसलिए है क्योंकि इन सेवकाइयों के सच्चाई और खराई से निर्वाह के लिए परमेश्वर के साथ बैठना और बहुत समय बिताना पड़ता है, लोगों के मध्य बड़े धैर्य के साथ परिश्रम करना पड़ता है, किन्तु तब भी इन से समाज में वह प्रशंसा और आदर का स्थान नहीं मिलता है जो प्रेरित और भविष्यद्वक्ता कहलाने से मिलता है। वरन, बहुधा यह भी देखा जाता है कि सामान्य लोगों को उनकी पापी होने की दशा का बोध होना, उनकी अपनी धारणाओं के स्थान पर परमेश्वर के वचन की वास्तविकता और उसकी खरी बातें सुनना रास नहीं आता है, इसलिए इन सेवकाइयों को करने वालों को संसार तथा समाज में आदर, ओहदा, और उच्च स्थान तो कम ही मिलते हैं, किन्तु तिरस्कार और विरोध अधिक मिलता है। संभवतः इसीलिए आज के मसीही विश्वासियों में इन सेवकाइयों के लिए चाह बहुत कम है।

प्रेरित पौलुस ने तीमुथियुस को सचेत किया कि लोग खरे उपदेश और शिक्षा के स्थान पर अपनी पसंद के लुभावने उपदेश और शिक्षा देने वालों को एकत्रित कर लेंगे। ऐसे में उसे सुसमाचार प्रचार करने के लिए, लोगों को वचन की सही शिक्षा देने के लिए बहुत परिश्रम करना पड़ेगा, साथ ही दुख भी उठाना पड़ेगा (2 तिमुथियुस 4:1-5)। पतरस ने भी अपने पाठकों को चिताया कि मसीही विश्वासियों और कलीसियाओं में झूठे उपदेशक या शिक्षक भी उठ खड़े होंगे और नाश करने वाले पाखण्ड तथा विनाश की बातों को छिप-छिप कर कलीसियाओं में फैलाएंगे (2 पतरस 2:1)। प्रभु यीशु मसीह ने पहले से ही अपने शिष्यों को उनके मध्य ऐसे लोगों के आ जाने के विषय सचेत कर दिया था, और उन्हें यह भी बात दिया था कि इन गलत शिक्षा देने और प्रचार करने वाले लोगों को कैसे पहचानें - उनके “फलों” से; अर्थात, उन लोगों के जीवन की गवाही, उनकी शिक्षाओं के प्रभाव (वास्तव में दुष्प्रभाव) से पता चल जाएगा कि कौन सही उपदेशक है और कौन नहीं (मत्ती 7:16-20; लूका 6:43-45)। हम प्रभु के द्वारा नियुक्त शिक्षकों और उपदेशकों की सेवकाई के बारे में अगले लेख में कुछ और बातों को देखेंगे।

यदि आप एक मसीही विश्वासी हैं, और यदि प्रभु परमेश्वर ने आपको अपनी कलीसिया के लोगों के मध्य वचन की शिक्षा देने ज़िम्मेदारी दी है, तो आपकी उन्नति और आशीष अपने मसीही जीवन तथा प्रभु परमेश्वर द्वारा सौंपी गई ज़िम्मेदारी को भली भांति निभाने और परमेश्वर को प्रसन्न करने वाली सही रीति से उसका निर्वाह करते रहने से ही है। परमेश्वर के वचन के सच्चाइयों को सीखने और सिखाने में समय लगाएं, शैतान द्वारा गलत शिक्षाओं को फैलाने वाले झूठे प्रेरितों और भविष्यद्वक्ताओं की गलत शिक्षाओं को समझने, जाँचने-परखने और उनसे बच कर चलने, तथा औरों को सचेत करने में संलग्न रहें। आप जितना अधिक समय परमेश्वर और उसके वचन के साथ बिताएंगे, उसकी आज्ञाकारिता में चलेंगे, वचन को उतनी गहराई से परमेश्वर पवित्र आत्मा आपको सिखाएगा, और उतना अधिक प्रभावी बनाकर प्रयोग करेगा।

यदि आपने प्रभु की शिष्यता को अभी तक स्वीकार नहीं किया है, तो अपने अनन्त जीवन और स्वर्गीय आशीषों को सुनिश्चित करने के लिए अभी प्रभु यीशु के पक्ष में अपना निर्णय कर लीजिए। जहाँ प्रभु की आज्ञाकारिता है, उसके वचन की बातों का आदर और पालन है, वहाँ प्रभु की आशीष और सुरक्षा भी है। प्रभु यीशु से अपने पापों के लिए क्षमा माँगकर, स्वेच्छा से तथा सच्चे मन से अपने आप को उसकी अधीनता में समर्पित कर दीजिए - उद्धार और स्वर्गीय जीवन का यही एकमात्र मार्ग है। आपको स्वेच्छा और सच्चे मन से प्रभु यीशु मसीह से केवल एक छोटी प्रार्थना करनी है, और साथ ही अपना जीवन उसे पूर्णतः समर्पित करना है। आप यह प्रार्थना और समर्पण कुछ इस प्रकार से भी कर सकते हैं, “प्रभु यीशु मैं आपका धन्यवाद करता हूँ कि आपने मेरे पापों की क्षमा और समाधान के लिए उन पापों को अपने ऊपर लिया, उनके कारण मेरे स्थान पर क्रूस की मृत्यु सही, गाड़े गए, और मेरे उद्धार के लिए आप तीसरे दिन जी भी उठे, और आज जीवित प्रभु परमेश्वर हैं। कृपया मेरे पापों को क्षमा करें, मुझे अपनी शरण में लें, और मुझे अपना शिष्य बना लें। मैं अपना जीवन आप के हाथों में समर्पित करता हूँ।” सच्चे और समर्पित मन से की गई आपकी एक प्रार्थना आपके वर्तमान तथा भविष्य को, इस लोक के और परलोक के जीवन को, अनन्तकाल के लिए स्वर्गीय एवं आशीषित बना देगी।

English Translation

Teachers and Preachers

Since the past few articles, we have been seeing from Ephesians 4:11 that for the works and functioning of His Church, the Lord Jesus has set some ministries and appointed some workers for those ministries. In context of the Church and Christian Faith, the words used in the original Greek language that they were written in, for these ministries and workers show that they are related to the ministry of God’s Word in the Churches. Today, from the list of Ephesians 4:11 we will consider the fifth ministry and its worker, the “Teachers.” As we see from 1 Corinthians 12:28-29, there is a difference in preaching from the facts and instructions given in the Bible, and to teach from and about the Bible; these are two different ministries. During the days of the Lord Jesus’s ministry on earth, the religious leaders of the Jews considered Him to be a “teacher” from God (John 3:2), the Rich Young Ruler desirous of eternal life addressed Him as “Good Teacher” (Mark 10:17), and at many places in the Gospels we find the people, especially the Jewish religious leaders addressed Him as “Rabbi”, which means “Teacher.” Their addressing Him in this manner was appropriate and correct since He used to teach the people (Matthew 13:54; Mark 1:21; 2:13), teach them about the Kingdom of God, preach the Gospel to them (Mark 1:15; Luke 4:43; Luke 8:1; Luke 20:1), and also teach as well as prophesy to them about the end of the world (Matthew 24).

We have to keep one more thing in mind about these ministries given in Ephesians 4:11; although they are five different ministries, but it is not necessary or required that five different people have to do them. Like the Lord Jesus, the same person, on different occasions, could carry out any of these ministries, as we see from the ministry of the Lord Jesus. Paul wrote that he used to carry out different ministries, “for which I was appointed a preacher and an apostle--I am speaking the truth in Christ and not lying--a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth” (1 Timothy 2:7); “to which I was appointed a preacher, an apostle, and a teacher of the Gentiles” (2 Timothy 1:11). James, Peter, John, all the writers of the books of the New Testament, in their writings preached the gospel, taught and gave instructions, prophesied about the end times, and served as elders and caretakers for the Churches. In other words, one person can carry out more than one kind of ministry; therefore, what is important is not the appointment of a worker for a particular ministry, but the carrying out of these five different ministries in every Church and in the lives of Christian Believers, for growth, stability and edification.

It is interesting to note that amongst these five kinds of ministries, today people usually have a desire for ministries through which they can show themselves off as prominent, or important, or special, and use the ministries as titles for themselves e.g., being Apostles, Prophets and prophesying. But among these people who using these ministries as a title place themselves up on a pedestal either by themselves, or through some group, sect, or denomination, and work to gain temporal benefits, name and fame, there is no desire to take the ministries of being an Evangelist or Teacher of God’s Word. You will be hard put to find anyone who likes to be called an Evangelist of Teacher. Quite likely this is because to fulfill these latter ministries worthily and diligently, one has to laboriously sit in the presence of the Lord, learn from Him, and then it requires a lot of patience and hard work to teach others. Yet, after all this effort, the Evangelists and Teachers do not have the honor and exaltation in the society that Apostles and Prophets have. Rather, because of telling the people about their being sinners, and because of exposing the truth of their false notions about their self-righteousness, through God’s Word, the Evangelists and Teachers are hardly ever appreciated. Therefore, their ministries too do not get much status, exaltation, and importance from the people; on the contrary they are often ridiculed, rejected, and opposed. May be that is why hardly anyone amongst the present-day Christian Believers has any desire to take up these ministries.

Paul had warned Timothy that in the latter days, people will gather for themselves those who, instead of sound doctrine and proper teachings, will teach things according to the people’s liking. In such an atmosphere those who want to preach the gospel, the correct doctrine, and true teachings of the Bible will have to labor much, as well as suffer for doing so (2 Timothy 4:1-5). Peter too cautioned his readers that in the Churches and amongst the Christian Believers many false teachers will arise and will secretly spread destructive heresies (2 Peter 2:1). The Lord Jesus had forewarned His disciples that such false teachers will come amongst them; and He had also given the characteristics and criteria by which to recognize them - by their “fruits”; meaning, by the witness of their lives and living, and the effects of their preaching and teachings, it will become evident who is a preacher and Teacher from the Lord, and who is not (Matthew 7:16-20; Luke 6:43-45). We will learn some more about the Lord’s Teachers and Preachers in our next article.

If you are a Christian Believer, and if the Lord has given you the responsibility of teaching His Word amongst His people, then your growth, edification, and blessings are dependent on your worthily and diligently carrying out your God given responsibilities, in the manner that please God. Spend your time in learning and understanding the truths of God’s Word, and be steadfastly involved in recognizing and exposing the wrong teachings, preaching, and doctrines of the false apostles and prophets brought in by Satan. The more time you spend with God and His Word, the more obedient you are to Him, the more deeply God the Holy Spirit will teach you His Word, and make you more effective in your ministry for the Lord.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord Jesus, then to ensure your eternal life and heavenly rewards, take a decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now. Wherever there is surrender and obedience towards the Lord Jesus, the Lord’s blessings and safety are also there. If you are still not Born Again, have not obtained salvation, or have not asked the Lord Jesus for forgiveness for your sins, then you have the opportunity to do so right now. A short prayer said voluntarily with a sincere heart, with heartfelt repentance for your sins, and a fully submissive attitude, “Lord Jesus, I confess that I have disobeyed You, and have knowingly or unknowingly, in mind, in thought, in attitude, and in deeds, committed sins. I believe that you have fully borne the punishment of my sins by your sacrifice on the cross, and have paid the full price of those sins for all eternity. Please forgive my sins, change my heart and mind towards you, and make me your disciple, take me with you." God longs for your company and wants to see you blessed, but to make this possible, is your personal decision. Will you not say this prayer now, while you have the time and opportunity to do so - the decision is yours.

पिछले कुछ लेखों में हम इफिसियों 4:11 से देखते आ रहे हैं कि प्रभु ने अपनी कलीसिया के कार्यों के लिए, कलीसिया में कुछ कार्यकर्ताओं, कुछ सेवकों को नियुक्त किया है। मूल यूनानी भाषा में इन सेवकों और उनकी सेवकाई के संबंध में प्रयोग किए गए शब्द दिखाते हैं कि ये सेवकाइयां कलीसिया में परमेश्वर के वचन की सेवकाई से संबंधित हैं। इन सेवकों और उनकी सेवकाइयों के संबंध में हम यह भी देख चुके हैं कि वर्तमान में इन दायित्वों और सेवकाइयों को अपने नाम के साथ जोड़ कर एक उपाधि के समान प्रयोग करने की सामान्यतः देखी जाने वाली प्रवृत्ति का बाइबल में कोई समर्थन नहीं है। इन सभी दायित्वों और सेवकाइयों के लिए प्रभु ने ही नियुक्ति की है, किसी मनुष्य अथवा संस्था या डिनॉमिनेशन ने नहीं; यह तथ्य वर्तमान में इन “उपाधियों” पर, जैसे किसी ईश्वरीय अधिकार प्राप्त होने के अंतर्गत, मनुष्यों द्वारा स्वयं ही या फिर किसी संस्था अथवा डिनॉमिनेशन द्वारा इन सेवकाइयों से संबंधित की जाने वाली नियुक्तियों की परंपरा का भी समर्थन नहीं करता है। साथ ही वर्तमान में एक और बहुत गलत प्रवृत्ति भी देखी जाती है कि लोग इन सेवकाइयों का प्रयोग परमेश्वर के वचन का पालन करना सीखने और सिखाने के स्थान पर, अपनी ही बातों और शिक्षाओं को सिखाने और पालन करवाने के लिए प्रयोग करते हैं, चाहे उनकी वे बातें और शिक्षाएं बाइबल से मेल न भी खाती हों, बाइबल की शिक्षाओं के अतिरिक्त हों। ऐसा करके ये लोग परमेश्वर के वचन में जोड़ने या घटाने, उसे अपनी इच्छा और सुविधा के अनुसार बदलने का अस्वीकार्य और दण्डनीय कार्य करते हैं (प्रकाशितवाक्य 22:18-19)। यह वही पाप है जो प्रभु यीशु की पृथ्वी की सेवकाई के समय फरीसियों, सदूकियों, और शास्त्रियों ने किया, और जिसके लिए प्रभु ने उनकी तीव्र भर्त्सना की, उन्हें दण्डनीय ठहराया (मत्ती 15:3-9, 12-14)।

 

आज हम इफिसियों 4:11 में दी गई सूची में प्रभु यीशु द्वारा नियुक्त किए जाने वाले प्रभु यीशु की कलीसिया के चौथे कार्यकर्ता, रखवाले, के बारे में देखेंगे। मूल यूनानी भाषा के जिस शब्द का अनुवाद “रखवाले” किया गया है, उसका शब्दार्थ है “चरवाहे” या “भेड़ों की रखवाली और चरवाही करने वाले”। प्रभु यीशु मसीह के जन्म के समय, लूका 2:8 में जहाँ स्वर्गदूतों ने मैदान में अपने झुण्ड की पहरेदारी और देखभाल करने वाले लोगों को प्रभु के जन्म का समाचार सुनाया, उन गड़रियों के लिए भी मूल यूनानी भाषा में यही शब्द प्रयोग किया गया है, जिसका अनुवाद यहाँ “रखवाले” किया गया है। तात्पर्य यह कि कलीसिया के रखवाले वे हैं जो एक गड़रिये या चरवाहे के समान अपने “झुण्ड” या उसे सौंपे गए लोगों की देखभाल और सुरक्षा प्रदान करते हैं। बाइबल में प्रभु यीशु मसीह को “प्रधान रखवाला” भी कहा गया है (इब्रानियों 13:20; 1 पतरस 5:4); अर्थात वही अपनी विश्व-व्यापी कलीसिया का मुख्य देखभाल और सुरक्षा करने वाला है, शेष सभी उसी की अधीनता और उसके निर्देशों के अनुसार कार्य करते हैं। साथ ही बाइबल यह भी स्पष्ट बताती है कि प्रभु ने जिन्हें अपनी कलीसिया की देखभाल की ज़िम्मेदारी सौंपी है, जिन्हें अपने “झुण्ड” के अगुवे बनाया है, उन्हें अन्ततः प्रभु को इस ज़िम्मेदारी का हिसाब भी देना होगा, और उनके कार्य के अनुसार उन्हें प्रतिफल मिलेगा (इब्रानियों 13:17; 1 पतरस 5:1-4)। अर्थात, कलीसिया में “रखवाला” या चरवाहा होना बहुत ज़िम्मेदारी का कार्य है, यह लोगों पर अधिकार रखने के लिए नहीं (1 पतरस 5:3), वरन विनम्रता तथा सहनशीलता के साथ प्रभु के लिए उसके लोगों की देखभाल के लिए है (1 पतरस 5:2)। यह सेवकाई केवल नए नियम में ही दी जाने वाली सेवकाई नहीं है, वरन, जैसा हम अभी देखेंगे, पुराने नियम में भी इस्राएल के अगुवों को यही ज़िम्मेदारी, यही सेवकाई सौंपी गई थी।

 

प्रभु के लोगों में, एक रखवाले या चरवाहे के क्या कार्य होते हैं, उसे प्रभु के “झुण्ड” की चरवाही करने की इस ज़िम्मेदारी को कैसे निभाना है? परमेश्वर के वचन बाइबल में इसे सकारात्मक और नकारात्मक दोनों ही प्रकार से, पुराने नियम में ही बता दिया गया था। जैसा हमने ऊपर देखा है, प्रभु यीशु को ही कलीसिया का प्रधान रखवाला बताया गया है। इसलिए स्वाभाविक है कि प्रभु परमेश्वर के जीवन और उदाहरण से ही हम इस ज़िम्मेदारी के सर्वश्रेष्ठ निर्वाह के बारे में सीख सकते हैं। इसका सकारात्मक और सर्वोत्तम उदाहरण दाऊद द्वारा लिखित भजन 23 है, जो संक्षेप में किन्तु प्रत्येक बिन्दु का ध्यान करते हुए चरवाहे के कार्य को बता देता है। भजन 23 का आरंभ यहोवा परमेश्वर को चरवाहा बताने के साथ होता है; फिर इससे आगे परमेश्वर द्वारा चरवाहे के रूप में किए गए कार्यों का उल्लेख है:

• पद 1 - वह अपनी भेड़ों को कुछ घटी नहीं होने देता है। पौलुस ने परमेश्वर पवित्र आत्मा की अगुवाई में अपने जीवन के उदाहरण से सीखने को बताते हुए लिखा कि जैसे हर दशा में प्रभु उसकी देखभाल करता है, उसे सब कुछ बहुतायत से उपलब्ध है और परमेश्वर उसकी हर आवश्यकता को पूरा करता है - फिलिप्पियों 4 अध्याय पढ़िए, और विशेषकर पद 13, 18, और 19 पर ध्यान कीजिए, वैसे ही प्रभु पौलुस के पाठकों के लिए भी करेगा। कलीसिया के रखवाले को भी उसके झुण्ड के लोगों की आवश्यकताओं का ध्यान रखते हुए, उन को उनकी आवश्यकता के अनुसार उपयुक्त सहायता और प्रावधान उपलब्ध करवाते रहना है जिससे उन्हें कुछ घटी न हो। 

• पद 2 - वह अपनी भेड़ों को उत्तम भोजन और जल उपलब्ध करवाता है - प्रभु यीशु स्वयं हमारे लिए “जीवन की रोटी” और “जीवन का जल” है (यूहन्ना 4:10, 14; 6:33, 35)। कलीसिया के रखवाले को प्रभु यीशु के वचन और शिक्षाओं के उत्तम आत्मिक भोजन को लोगों तक पहुँचाते रहना है जिससे उनका आत्मिक स्वास्थ्य अच्छा रहे, वे किसी गलत शिक्षा या सांसारिक बातों में भटक कर प्रभु से दूर न चले जाएं। 

• पद 3 - वह अशान्ति के समय में अपनी भेड़ों को शांति प्रदान करता है, और परमेश्वर के मार्गों में चलने की अगुवाई प्रदान करता है। कलीसिया के रखवाले को भी उसकी कलीसिया के लोगों को शांति, ढाढ़स, सांत्वना, दुख के समय में सहारा और निराशाओं में प्रोत्साहन देने वाला, और संसार की बातों की मिलावट से बचाकर परमेश्वर के खरे मार्गों में अपने झुण्ड को लिए चलने वाला होना चाहिए। 

• पद 4 - परमेश्वर के लोग उसकी उनके साथ निरंतर बनी उपस्थिति से आश्वस्त और सुरक्षित रहते हैं; अपने सोंटे और लाठी के द्वारा परमेश्वर अपनी भेड़ों को हाँकता भी है, जो इधर-उधर होने लगती हैं, उन्हें हांक कर वापस सही मार्ग में ले आता है; और भक्षक पशुओं से उनकी रक्षा करता है। कलीसिया के रखवाले को वचन रूपी लाठी और सोंटे से अपनी कलीसिया के लोगों को समझाना, सुधारना, सिखाना है, और जहाँ आवश्यक हो उलाहना देना और डांटना भी है (2 तीमुथियुस 3:16; 4:2-4)। 

• पद 5 - परमेश्वर अपने लोगों की कठिनाइयों में उनकी रक्षा और सहायता करता है; उनके लिए आवश्यक भली वस्तुएं उन्हें उपलब्ध करवाता है। कलीसिया के रखवाले को भी अपने लोगों के साथ हर परिस्थिति में खड़े रहकर उनकी सहायता करते रहना है, उन्हें सुरक्षा प्रदान करनी है, इधर-उधर भटकने और लज्जित होने से रोक कर रखना है, बचाना है। 

• पद 6 - परमेश्वर अपने साथ रहने और उस पर भरोसा रखने वाले लोगों को न केवल इस जीवन में उनकी भलाई के लिए आश्वस्त रखता है वरन साथ ही उनके परलोक के अनन्त जीवन के विषय भी आश्वस्त रखता है। कलीसिया के रखवाले को भी अपने लोगों को इस लोक और परलोक के विषय बताना और सिखाना है, तथा उन्हें इस जीवन में तथा परलोक के अनन्त जीवन में सही स्थान पर और सुरक्षित रहना सिखाना है। 

    कलीसिया के रखवाले के लिए भजन 23 के इस सकारात्मक उदाहरण की तुलना में, यहेजकेल 34 अध्याय में इस्राएल के चरवाहों की अनेकों प्रकार की परमेश्वर की भेड़ों के प्रति लापरवाही और परमेश्वर की अनाज्ञाकारिता के नकारात्मक व्यवहार का उदाहरण और परमेश्वर द्वारा उनकी भर्त्सना, और उन्हें दण्ड देने, तथा अपनी भेड़ों को संभालने का वर्णन है। यहेजकेल 34 अध्याय में इस्राएल के उन चरवाहों ने जो कुछ किया, आज, कलीसिया के रखवाले को वह नहीं करना है, वरन परमेश्वर के निर्देशों के अनुसार कलीसिया के लोगों की रखवाली करनी है।

 

यदि आप एक मसीही विश्वासी हैं, और यदि प्रभु परमेश्वर ने आपको अपनी कलीसिया के लोगों के मध्य कोई ज़िम्मेदारी दी है, तो आपकी उन्नति और आशीष अपने मसीही जीवन तथा प्रभु परमेश्वर द्वारा सौंपी गई ज़िम्मेदारी को भली भांति निभाने और परमेश्वर को प्रसन्न करने वाली सही रीति से उसका निर्वाह करते रहने से ही है। परमेश्वर के वचन के सच्चाइयों को सीखने और सिखाने में समय लगाएं, शैतान द्वारा गलत शिक्षाओं को फैलाने वाले झूठे प्रेरितों और भविष्यद्वक्ताओं की गलत शिक्षाओं को समझने, जाँचने-परखने और उनसे बच कर चलने, तथा औरों को सचेत करने में संलग्न रहें (यहूदा 1:20-23)।

यदि आपने प्रभु की शिष्यता को अभी तक स्वीकार नहीं किया है, तो अपने अनन्त जीवन और स्वर्गीय आशीषों को सुनिश्चित करने के लिए अभी प्रभु यीशु के पक्ष में अपना निर्णय कर लीजिए। जहाँ प्रभु की आज्ञाकारिता है, उसके वचन की बातों का आदर और पालन है, वहाँ प्रभु की आशीष और सुरक्षा भी है। प्रभु यीशु से अपने पापों के लिए क्षमा माँगकर, स्वेच्छा से तथा सच्चे मन से अपने आप को उसकी अधीनता में समर्पित कर दीजिए - उद्धार और स्वर्गीय जीवन का यही एकमात्र मार्ग है। आपको स्वेच्छा और सच्चे मन से प्रभु यीशु मसीह से केवल एक छोटी प्रार्थना करनी है, और साथ ही अपना जीवन उसे पूर्णतः समर्पित करना है। आप यह प्रार्थना और समर्पण कुछ इस प्रकार से भी कर सकते हैं, “प्रभु यीशु मैं आपका धन्यवाद करता हूँ कि आपने मेरे पापों की क्षमा और समाधान के लिए उन पापों को अपने ऊपर लिया, उनके कारण मेरे स्थान पर क्रूस की मृत्यु सही, गाड़े गए, और मेरे उद्धार के लिए आप तीसरे दिन जी भी उठे, और आज जीवित प्रभु परमेश्वर हैं। कृपया मेरे पापों को क्षमा करें, मुझे अपनी शरण में लें, और मुझे अपना शिष्य बना लें। मैं अपना जीवन आप के हाथों में समर्पित करता हूँ।” सच्चे और समर्पित मन से की गई आपकी एक प्रार्थना आपके वर्तमान तथा भविष्य को, इस लोक के और परलोक के जीवन को, अनन्तकाल के लिए स्वर्गीय एवं आशीषित बना देगी।

Pastors, Their Role & Functions

Since the past few articles, we have been seeing from Ephesians 4:11 that for the works and functioning of His Church, the Lord Jesus has set some ministries and appointed some workers for those ministries. In context of the Church and Christian Faith, the words used in the original Greek language that they were written in, for these ministries and workers show that they are related to the ministry of God’s Word in the Churches. We have also seen that today there is an unBiblical tendency to use these ministries and responsibilities as titles for conveying superiority over others; something for which there is neither any example nor support from God’s Word. All of these ministries and responsibilities have been given by Lord, and He alone appointed the persons to carry them out. This fact nullifies the present-day practice of people taking these as ‘titles’ upon themselves, or some group, sect, or denomination appointing some persons to them; as if by divine authority. Another very wrong thing seen these days, related to these ministries, is that people use them not to preach and teach the Word of God in truth and with sincerity, but their own contrived doctrines and ideas, whether or not what they preach and teach is according to the Bible. By doing this, these people become guilty of the sin of adding to, or taking away from, God’s Word according to their convenience, and will have to suffer the severe consequences (Revelation 22:18-19). This is the same sin that the Pharisees, Sadducees, and the Scribes committed at the time the Lord was on earth, and were severely castigated for it by the Lord (Matthew 15:3-9, 12-14).

Today we will see about the workers appointed by the Lord for the fourth ministry given in Ephesians 4:11, the Pastors. The word used in the original Greek language, and translated as ‘Pastor’, literally means a shepherd or one who looks after the sheep, and some English translations use the word “Shepherd” instead of “Pastors” here in this verse. In Luke 2:8, where at the time of the birth of the Lord Jesus, the angels announced the birth to the shepherds tending their flocks, this same word is used in Greek for those shepherds, as has been used in Ephesians 4:11 and translated as “Pastors.” In other words, the “Pastors” in a Church, amongst the Christian Believers, have the same role and function as a shepherd has for his flock of sheep; a Pastor has to look-after and keep the “flock” entrusted to him safe and secure, in the same manner as a shepherd does for his flock. In the Bible, the Lord Jesus has also been called “The Chief Shepherd” (Hebrews 13:20; 1 Peter 5:4); i.e., He is the one who is in-charge of taking care of His world-wide Church and flock of Believers, all the rest of the ‘shepherds’ have to function under Him and for Him, as He instructs and guides them in their roles and responsibilities. The Bible also makes it very clear that those to whom the Lord has entrusted this responsibility of being the “Pastors” or care-takers of His flock, they will eventually have to give an account to Him and receive their rewards for their performance (Hebrews 13:17; 1 Peter 5:1-4). Therefore, to be a Pastor or care-taker of a Church is a work of great responsibility, it is not for exercising authority over people (1 Peter 5:3), but to very humbly and with a lot of forbearance take care of the Church and people of the Lord (1 Peter 5:2). This responsibility was not given just in the New Testament, but as we will see just now, the same responsibility was given to the elders of Israel to take care of the Israelites as well.

Amongst the people of the Lord, what are the works and functions of a Shepherd or Pastor? How should he be fulfilling the responsibilities entrusted to him? In God’s Word, in the Old Testament itself, this has been clearly told by God, in its positive as well as negative aspects. As we have seen above, the Lord Jesus is the Chief Shepherd of His Church. Therefore, it is only natural that we can best learn from the life and example of the Lord Jesus, about how best to fulfill this responsibility. The best positive example of this is Psalm 23 written by David, which in brief tells about a shepherd’s responsibilities, in every verse. This Psalm starts with naming God as the Shepherd, and then from there goes on to tell how God carry’s out His role as the Shepherd:

• Verse 1 - He does not let His sheep face any lack. Paul, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, using his own life and ministry as an example wrote, just as God takes care of him in all situations and provides for him in all circumstances, and he has everything to meet his needs - read Philippians chapter 4, and particularly pay attention to verses 13, 18, and 19, similarly God will also provide for and meet the needs of Paul’s audience as well. The shepherd of the church should also remain aware of the needs of his flock, and provide the required help and provisions to them, so that they lack nothing.

• Verse 2 - He arranges for good food and water for His sheep - the Lord Jesus is the “Bread of life” and the “Water of life” (John 4:10, 14; 6:33, 35). The caretakers of the Church should see that the flock receives good, nutritious spiritual food and water from God’s Word, so that their spiritual health does not suffer, but improves continually. He should ensure that they do not fall into any wrong teachings and worldliness, and get carried away from the Lord.

• Verse 3 - He provides comfort and peace to the sheep when they are restless and discomfited, and provides leadership for them to walk in the ways of the Lord God. a Pastor, the caretaker of the flock, should provide rest, comfort, peace, assurance and support in trying times, encouragement and guidance in discouragements and defeats; and he should ensure that they remain away from compromising with God’s Word, from the corruption of the world, and walk in the correct ways of the Lord.

• Verse 4 - God’s people feel comforted, assured, and secure because of His continual presence with them. He helps and guides them with His staff and His rod; the sheep that start wandering away from the right way, He prods back onto the right way, and keeps them safe from predators. The Pastor of the Church has to use the ‘rod and staff’ - the Word of God to teach, correct, instruct in righteousness, convince and teach with longsuffering, and wherever necessary, rebuke and exhort as well (2 Timothy 3:16; 4:2-4).

• Verse 5 - God keeps His people safe and secure in their difficult times, helps them, and provides the appropriate things for them according to their circumstances. The Pastor, the shepherd of the flock too, needs to stand with his people in all their situations and circumstances; keep them safe, prevent them from wandering away into wrongs, and safeguard them from being brought to shame.

• Verse 6 - God not only assures and provides good things in this life to His people, His Believers, but also assures them of eternal life and eternal rewards. The Pastor of the church too needs to teach his flock about the things of this world and of the next, and has to show them how to be safe and secure for this life as well as the next.

 

In contrast to the positive example of a Godly Pastor given in Psalm 23, God in His Word, in Ezekiel 34, has given the negative description of the callous, irresponsible, uncaring shepherds of Israel, who by their disobedience to God, allowed His sheep, the people of Israel to suffer. God severely denounces them and their ways, and tells them of His punishment for them and how He will gather together and take care of His sheep. What those elders of Israel, those wayward shepherds did, the Pastor, i.e., the shepherd of God’s flock is not to do any of that, but take care of the flock entrusted to him just as God instructs him to do.

If you are a Christian Believer, and if God has given you a responsibility amongst His people, then your edification, growth, and blessings are in diligently fulfilling the responsibility in the manner that pleases God. Utilize your time in learning and teaching the truths of God’s Word; and be careful to learn about, identify, stay safe and warn others about the false apostles and prophets, and their wrong teachings, infiltrated amongst God’s people by Satan; save others from falling prey to Satan’s devices (Jude 1:20-23).

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord Jesus, then to ensure your eternal life and heavenly rewards, take a decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now. Wherever there is surrender and obedience towards the Lord Jesus, the Lord’s blessings and safety are also there. If you are still not Born Again, have not obtained salvation, or have not asked the Lord Jesus for forgiveness for your sins, then you have the opportunity to do so right now. A short prayer said voluntarily with a sincere heart, with heartfelt repentance for your sins, and a fully submissive attitude, “Lord Jesus, I confess that I have disobeyed You, and have knowingly or unknowingly, in mind, in thought, in attitude, and in deeds, committed sins. I believe that you have fully borne the punishment of my sins by your sacrifice on the cross, and have paid the full price of those sins for all eternity. Please forgive my sins, change my heart and mind towards you, and make me your disciple, take me with you." God longs for your company and wants to see you blessed, but to make this possible, is your personal decision. Will you not say this prayer now, while you have the time and opportunity to do so - the decision is yours.

सुसमाचार प्रचार का महत्त्व एवं अनिवार्यता

इन लोगों की बातों और विशेषकर “भविष्यवाणियों” के लिए एक और बात ध्यान में रखनी बहुत आवश्यक है - प्रभु परमेश्वर द्वारा नियुक्त प्रेरितों और प्रथम कलीसिया के अगुवों का समय समाप्त होते-होते, नए नियम की सभी पत्रियां और पुस्तकें लिखी जा चुकी थीं, और स्थान-स्थान पर पहुँचा दी गई थीं। अर्थात, परमेश्वर का वचन लिखित रूप में पूर्ण हो चुका था; अब केवल उसे संकलित करके एक पुस्तक के रूप में लाना शेष था, जैसा कि आज बाइबल के रूप में वह हमारे हाथों में विद्यमान है। उन प्रेरितों और आरंभिक कलीसिया के अगुवों में होकर परमेश्वर पवित्र आत्मा ने जो वचन लिखवा दिया, वही संकलित होकर अनन्तकाल के लिए बाइबल के रूप में परमेश्वर का वचन स्थापित हो गया है। इस सन्दर्भ में पतरस अपनी दूसरी पत्री, 2पतरस 1:3-4 में, परमेश्वर पवित्र आत्मा की अगुवाई में लिखता है कि प्रभु यीशु की पहचान और समझा के द्वारा, जीवन और भक्ति से संबंधित सभी बातें, तथा परमेश्वर की बड़ी और महान प्रतिज्ञाएं, और संसार की सड़ाहट से बचने का मार्ग हमे दे दिया गया है - एक पूर्ण किया जा चुका सिद्ध कार्य, जिसमें किसी भी अन्य बात के जोड़े जाने या संशोधन किए जाने की न तो कोई आवश्यकता है और न ही कोई संभावना शेष है। अर्थात, वचन के एक बारे लिखे जाने के बाद उसमें न कुछ जोड़ा जा सकता है, और न घटाया जा सकता है, न बदला जा सकता है; जिसने भी ऐसा कुछ भी करने का प्रयास किया, उसे बहुत भारी दण्ड भोगना पड़ेगा (प्रकाशितवाक्य 22:18-19)। इसलिए आज, जो यह अपनी ओर से “भविष्यवाणी” करके परमेश्वर के वचन में अपनी ओर से बातें जोड़ने या वचन की बातों को बदलने या सुधारने के प्रयास करते हैं, वह उनके लिए, और उनकी बातों को मानने वालों के लिए बहुत हानिकारक होगा (मत्ती 12:36-37; 15:8-9, 13-14)।

 

इफिसियों 4:11 में दिए गए तीसरे प्रकार की कार्यकर्ता हैं “सुसमाचार सुनाने वाले”। ध्यान कीजिए कि यद्यपि कलीसिया में कुछ लोगों को सुसमाचार प्रचार का दायित्व और वरदान दिया गया है, किन्तु सुसमाचार सुनाना प्रभु ने अपने सभी शिष्यों के लिए रखा है (मत्ती 28:18-20; मरकुस 16:15; प्रेरितों 1:8); सुसमाचार प्रचार प्रत्येक मसीही विश्वासी की ज़िम्मेदारी है। पौलुस ने अपनी मसीही सेवकाई में सुसमाचार प्रचार करने की अनिवार्यता को 1 कुरिन्थियों 9:16-17, 23 में व्यक्त किया, तथा अपने सहकर्मी तीमुथियुस को भी दुख उठाकर भी बड़ी सहनशीलता के साथ, बिना हार माने, सुसमाचार प्रचार में लगे रहने के लिए कहा (2 तीमुथियुस 4:5)। प्रभु यीशु की कलीसिया के लिए प्रयुक्त विभिन्न रूपकों (metaphors) के अध्ययन में भी, और प्रेरितों 2:42 की चार बातों में से “रोटी तोड़ने” के बारे में वचन की बातों को देखते समय हमने देखा था कि कलीसिया का एक उद्देश्य, उसका एक कर्तव्य है प्रभु यीशु की गवाही देते रहना। जहाँ प्रभु यीशु की गवाही होगी, वहीं साथ ही सुसमाचार प्रचार भी होगा। जिस भी स्थानीय कलीसिया की गतिविधियों में सुसमाचार प्रचार नहीं है, वह कलीसिया या तो प्रभु की कलीसिया नहीं है, अन्यथा प्रभु के मार्गों, कार्यों, और उद्देश्यों से भटक गई है, प्रभु के लिए कार्य नहीं कर रही है। जैसा हम प्रकाशितवाक्य अध्याय 2 और 3 की कलीसियाओं से देख चुके हैं, ऐसी सभी अप्रभावी और निकम्मी कलीसियाएँ, बची नहीं रहेंगी, वे प्रभु द्वारा मिटा दी जाएँगी। जैसा हम पहले के 20 अक्टूबर के लेख में देख चुके हैं, प्रभु यीशु की कलीसिया और उसके सदस्यों के मसीही जीवनों की उन्नति वचन की सही आज्ञाकारिता के साथ जुड़ी हुई है। जहाँ वचन का पालन नहीं है, वहाँ परमेश्वर की आशीष और सुरक्षा भी नहीं है।

 

सुसमाचार प्रचार मसीही जीवन और कलीसिया के लिए परमेश्वर की सामर्थ्य है, तथा सुसमाचार ही विश्वास में होकर परमेश्वर की धार्मिकता को प्रकट करता है (रोमियों 1:16-17)। शैतान यह जानता है कि जो भी व्यक्ति या कलीसिया सुसमाचार प्रचार में लगे होंगे, वे उसके लिए एक बड़ा सिरदर्द बन जाएंगे, क्योंकि उनमें होकर परमेश्वर की सामर्थ्य उसके विरुद्ध कार्य करेगी। इसलिए वह सुसमाचार प्रचार में हर संभव बाधा डालता है। शैतान लोगों को सुसमाचार प्रचार के प्रति उदासीन करता है, लोगों तथा संसार के द्वारा भयभीत करता है, उनके अपने जीवन, परिवारों, तथा उनकी गवाही को बिगाड़ता है, परमेश्वर के जो संतान लगन और उत्साह के साथ सुसमाचार प्रचार में लगे हैं उन्हें निरुत्साहित करता है, जिससे प्रभु के उन लोगों का जीवन उनके प्रचार के अनुरूप न दिखे और अप्रभावी रहे। इसी रीति से वह कलीसिया को औपचारिकताओं तथा परंपराओं, रीति-रिवाज़ों, त्यौहारों और पर्व आदि के निर्वाह में फंसाए रखता है; उनमें कलह, फूट, दलों और गुटों में विभाजन आदि करवाता है, जिससे किसी भी रीति से कलीसिया भी दुर्बल रहे, सुसमाचार प्रचार में न लगे, और प्रभु के लिए निरुपयोगी और अप्रभावी बनी रहे। अर्थात, किसी न किसी प्रकार से मसीही विश्वासी और प्रभु की कलीसिया को सुसमाचार प्रचार करने से अक्षम या दुर्बल बनाए रखता है। और परमेश्वर पवित्र आत्मा चाहता है कि हम शैतान की इन युक्तियों के प्रति सचेत रहें, उन्हें पहचानें, और उनसे बचाकर चलें (2 कुरिन्थियों 2:11)।

  

शैतान का सुसमाचार प्रचार को प्रभाव रहित करने का एक अन्य बहुत कारगर हथियार है सुसमाचार की सच्चाई और मूल स्वरूप को बिगाड़ कर, एक मिलावटी या मन-गढ़ंत सुसमाचार और अप्रभावी (1कुरिन्थियों 1:17) को लोगों द्वारा प्रचार करवाना। शैतान द्वारा इस प्रकार के भ्रष्ट किए गए सुसमाचार में लोगों से पापों से पश्चाताप करने और उनके लिए प्रभु से क्षमा माँगने के स्थान पर भले कामों को करने, भले बनने, और धार्मिक गतिविधियों को करने तथा मानने-मनाने के द्वारा परमेश्वर को स्वीकार्य होने की शिक्षाएं दी जाती हैं; जो कि प्रभु यीशु के एकमात्र सच्चे और उद्धार देने वाले सुसमाचार (रोमियों 10:9-10; 1कुरिन्थियों 15:1-4) से बिलकुल भिन्न हैं। जो लोग शैतान द्वारा भ्रष्ट किए गए इस सुसमाचार के पालन और प्रचार में लगे होते हैं, उन्हें लगता है कि वे प्रभु के लिए अच्छा कार्य कर रहे हैं, किन्तु वास्तव में वे प्रभु के विरुद्ध और शैतान के लिए अच्छा कार्य कर रहे होते हैं। इस भ्रष्ट सुसमाचार के प्रभावहीन होने की गंभीरता को हम पवित्र आत्मा द्वारा पौलुस प्रेरित से गलातियों की मसीही मण्डली को लिखी बात से समझ सकते हैं: “मुझे आश्चर्य होता है, कि जिसने तुम्हें मसीह के अनुग्रह से बुलाया उस से तुम इतनी जल्दी फिर कर और ही प्रकार के सुसमाचार की ओर झुकने लगे। परन्तु वह दूसरा सुसमाचार है ही नहीं: पर बात यह है, कि कितने ऐसे हैं, जो तुम्हें घबरा देते, और मसीह के सुसमाचार को बिगाड़ना चाहते हैं। परन्तु यदि हम या स्वर्ग से कोई दूत भी उस सुसमाचार को छोड़ जो हम ने तुम को सुनाया है, कोई और सुसमाचार तुम्हें सुनाए, तो श्रापित हो। जैसा हम पहिले कह चुके हैं, वैसा ही मैं अब फिर कहता हूं, कि उस सुसमाचार को छोड़ जिसे तुम ने ग्रहण किया है, यदि कोई और सुसमाचार सुनाता है, तो श्रापित हो। अब मैं क्या मनुष्यों को मनाता हूं या परमेश्वर को? क्या मैं मनुष्यों को प्रसन्न करना चाहता हूं?” (गलातियों 1:6-9)।

 

क्योंकि अपनी कलीसिया और उसके लोगों की उन्नति के लिए प्रभु ने सुसमाचार प्रचार को इतना महत्व दिया है, और आवश्यक ठहराया है, इसलिए हम मसीही विश्वासियों की यह ज़िम्मेदारी है कि हम प्रभु के इस कार्य में प्रभु के निर्देशानुसार एवं आज्ञाकारिता में संलग्न रहें, इसे नज़रन्दाज़ न करें, इसे हल्का या कम महत्व का न समझें। यदि आप एक मसीही विश्वासी हैं तो ध्यान कीजिए कि प्रभु यीशु के सुसमाचार प्रचार के प्रति आपका क्या रवैया है? क्या आप उस सच्चे सुसमाचार को, उसके मूल स्वरूप में समझते और जानते हैं? क्या आप उस सुसमाचार को ग्रहण करने और उसके निर्वाह के द्वारा मसीही विश्वासी बने हैं, या अन्य किसी विधि से? यदि आप उस सच्चे सुसमाचार के द्वारा प्रभु में नहीं आए हैं, उसके आधार पर प्रभु की कलीसिया के अंग नहीं बने हैं, तो आप शैतान द्वारा फैलाए गए भ्रम-जाल में फंसे हुए हैं, और आपको अभी समय तथा अवसर रहते अपनी स्थिति को ठीक करना अनिवार्य है, नहीं तो शैतान द्वारा आपकी अनन्तकाल की हानि आपके लिए तैयार है।

यदि आपने प्रभु की शिष्यता को अभी तक स्वीकार नहीं किया है, तो अपने अनन्त जीवन और स्वर्गीय आशीषों को सुनिश्चित करने के लिए अभी प्रभु यीशु के पक्ष में अपना निर्णय कर लीजिए। जहाँ प्रभु की आज्ञाकारिता है, उसके वचन की बातों का आदर और पालन है, वहाँ प्रभु की आशीष और सुरक्षा भी है। प्रभु यीशु से अपने पापों के लिए क्षमा माँगकर, स्वेच्छा से तथा सच्चे मन से अपने आप को उसकी अधीनता में समर्पित कर दीजिए - उद्धार और स्वर्गीय जीवन का यही एकमात्र मार्ग है। आपको स्वेच्छा और सच्चे मन से प्रभु यीशु मसीह से केवल एक छोटी प्रार्थना करनी है, और साथ ही अपना जीवन उसे पूर्णतः समर्पित करना है। आप यह प्रार्थना और समर्पण कुछ इस प्रकार से भी कर सकते हैं, “प्रभु यीशु मैं आपका धन्यवाद करता हूँ कि आपने मेरे पापों की क्षमा और समाधान के लिए उन पापों को अपने ऊपर लिया, उनके कारण मेरे स्थान पर क्रूस की मृत्यु सही, गाड़े गए, और मेरे उद्धार के लिए आप तीसरे दिन जी भी उठे, और आज जीवित प्रभु परमेश्वर हैं। कृपया मेरे पापों को क्षमा करें, मुझे अपनी शरण में लें, और मुझे अपना शिष्य बना लें। मैं अपना जीवन आप के हाथों में समर्पित करता हूँ।” सच्चे और समर्पित मन से की गई आपकी एक प्रार्थना आपके वर्तमान तथा भविष्य को, इस लोक के और परलोक के जीवन को, अनन्तकाल के लिए स्वर्गीय एवं आशीषित बना देगी।

English Translation

The Importance & Necessity of Preaching the Gospel

We have seen that in Ephesians 4:11 a list five kinds of ministries and their workers appointed by the Lord Jesus for the growth and edification of His Church is given. The words used for the ministries in the original Greek language, in context of the Church and the Christian Faith, all imply various works and functions related to the ministry of the Word of God. Of these five, we have considered the first two, i.e., Apostles, Prophets and Prophesying. From the Biblical texts related to these ministries and workers, it is evident that today those who claim to be Apostles and Prophets, do not live up to the criteria, or, exhibit the characteristics, and qualities mentioned in God’s Word the Bible about these ministries and workers. Today, these people are usually seen in those groups, sects, and denominations that preach, teach, and make people follow wrong doctrines and false teachings related to God the Holy Spirit. In such groups, sects, and denominations, some persons or elders, declare some of their members as Apostles or Prophets. They then use these ministries as a title or status symbol to assert authority over other members, to gain material things and temporal benefits. Whereas Ephesians 4:11 says it very clearly that the appointments to these ministries were done by the Lord, not any person.

Another very important thing to always be keep in mind, related to the activities of these people, especially regarding “Prophesying” is that by the time the era and life-time of the Lord appointed Apostles and the Elders of the first Church came to an end, all the books and letters that eventually were going to be a part of the New Testament, had already been written, circulated, and had reached their destinations. In other words, the Word of God in its written form had been completed; now all that remained was to compile it into one book, in the form we have it with us, as the Bible. What those Apostles and Prophets of the initial Church wrote under the guidance of the Holy Spirit and left for us, later, that was compiled in one book to be with us for all eternity, as the Word of God, the Bible. In this context, Peter under the guidance of the Holy Spirit wrote in 2Peter 1:3-4, that everything that pertains to life and godliness, along with God’s great promises and the way to escape the corruption of the world, has already been given to us in the knowledge and understanding of the Lord Jesus - as a completed and accomplished perfect work, in which there is neither any need nor any scope or possibility of any addition, or modification, or correction. In other words, now that God’s Word has been written down and given to us, there is no possibility of adding or taking away or modifying anything from it; whoever does anything like this will have to pay a very heavy price for doing so (Revelation 22:18-19). Therefore, the present-day self or man proclaimed “Apostles” and “Prophets”, who claim to receive visions and instructions from god, on the basis of which they then add or modify or reject things from God’s Word with gross impunity, will have to give a serious account and heavily suffer for manhandling God’s Word to suit their convenience (Matthew 12:36-37; 15:8-9, 13-14).

In Ephesians 4:11, the third ministry and its workers are “Evangelists.” Take note that although some in the Church have been especially given the gift of preaching the gospel, but the Lord has kept preaching and propagating the gospel for each and every one of His disciples (Matthew 28:18-20; Mark 16:15; Acts 1:8); evangelism or preaching the gospel is every Christian’s responsibility. The Apostle Paul expressed the compulsion and necessity of preaching the gospel in 1Corinthians 9:16-17, 23; and he also instructed his co-worker, Timothy, to continue patiently in preaching the gospel, putting up with all the problems and difficulties that may come while doing this, without giving up on it (2Timothy 4:5). While we were considering the various metaphors used in the Bible for the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ, and also in the discussion from Acts 2:42 on “Breaking of Bread”, i.e., the Holy Communion, we had seen that one of the purposes, a responsibility of the Church is to be engaged in witnessing for the Lord Jesus. Wherever there is witnessing for the Lord Jesus, the preaching of the gospel will also be there, automatically. Therefore, in whichever local church, there is no outreach and gospel preaching in its activities, that church either does not belong to the Lord Jesus, or has been misled and fallen away from the Lord’s ways, works, and purposes and is no longer working for the Lord, is ineffective and not of any use for Him. As we have seen about the churches of Revelation chapters 2 and 3, such an ineffective and useless church will face the Lord’s judgment and be brought to an end. As we have seen in the article of October 20, the growth, stability, and edification of the Lord’s Church and of His Believers is closely related to their proper obedience to God’s Word. Where there is obedience to the Lord and His Word, there the security and blessings of the Lord God are also present; else that church or person are on their own, without any help, security, and blessings of God.

In preaching and propagating the gospel, God’s power is also available, and it is the gospel that reveals God’s righteousness through faith (Romans 1:16-17). Satan knows this very well; he knows that those who are engaged in preaching and propagating the gospel, will turn out to be a big problem for him, since God’s power will work through them, against him. Therefore, he obstructs and tries to prevent preaching the gospel in every possible way that he can. To accomplish this, Satan turns the preachers into being indifferent and callous towards their ministry and responsibility, puts fear of people and the world in their hearts, strives to spoil their life, families, and testimony, quench the zeal and enthusiasm of God’s children who are engaged in or want to be involved in preaching the gospel; all so that the lives of the preachers of the gospel does not resemble or live up to what they preach, and they become ineffective for the Lord. Similarly, he keeps the churches involved in an outward show of vain activity through fulfilling formalities, rituals, traditions, celebrations, feasts and festivals; and even through creating dissensions, groupism, and infightings, so that somehow the church too remains weak and incapable of having any outreach and is ineffective for the Lord. God the Holy Spirit desires that we learn and be aware of these devices of Satan, and stay safe from being beguiled by him (2Corinthians 2:11).

A very effective and often used weapon of Satan against the gospel is to have the people corrupt the gospel by inserting their own ideas, thinking, and wisdom in it, thereby render the gospel ineffective (1Corinthians 1:17), and then engage the people in spreading this false, corrupted, ineffective gospel, under the assumption that they are doing a service for the Lord, whereas actually they are doing a great disservice for the Lord! A hallmark of this corrupted, ineffective, false gospel is that instead of repentance for sins and asking for the Lord’s forgiveness for them, it encourages the people to be good, to do good works, be ‘religious’, be involved in ‘religious works’ to please God and become acceptable to Him - none of which are a feature of the one and only true, saving, gospel (Romans 10:9-10; 1Corinthians 15:1-4) of the Lord Jesus. The seriousness of this corruption, and ineffectiveness of this corrupted gospel was emphasized by the Holy Spirit in the opening section of Apostle Paul’s letter to the Church in Galatia. Through the Holy Spirit, Paul wrote, “I marvel that you are turning away so soon from Him who called you in the grace of Christ, to a different gospel, which is not another; but there are some who trouble you and want to pervert the gospel of Christ. But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed. As we have said before, so now I say again, if anyone preaches any other gospel to you than what you have received, let him be accursed” (Galatians 1:6-9).

Since the Lord has given so much emphasis to the preaching of the gospel and made it so necessary for the growth, stability, and edification of His Church and its members - the Christian Believers, it is the responsibility of the Christian Believers to be continually engaged in this ministry under the Lord’s instructions and guidance, not take it lightly, not ignore or overlook it. If you are a Christian Believer, then what is your attitude towards the gospel and its preaching? Do you know and understand the gospel in its correct form? Have you become a Christian, a Believer by obeying and following that gospel, or through some other way? If you have not come to faith in the Lord Jesus through that gospel, if you have not become a member of the Lord Jesus’s Church through obeying and following the gospel, then you are caught and entangled in the deceptive and destructive web of Satan. Assess and correct your situation now, while you have God given time and opportunity to do so, else eternal damnation and irretrievable harm is ready and waiting for you from Satan.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord Jesus, then to ensure your eternal life and heavenly rewards, take a decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now. Wherever there is surrender and obedience towards the Lord Jesus, the Lord’s blessings and safety are also there. If you are still not Born Again, have not obtained salvation, or have not asked the Lord Jesus for forgiveness for your sins, then you have the opportunity to do so right now. A short prayer said voluntarily with a sincere heart, with heartfelt repentance for your sins, and a fully submissive attitude, “Lord Jesus, I confess that I have disobeyed You, and have knowingly or unknowingly, in mind, in thought, in attitude, and in deeds, committed sins. I believe that you have fully borne the punishment of my sins by your sacrifice on the cross, and have paid the full price of those sins for all eternity. Please forgive my sins, change my heart and mind towards you, and make me your disciple, take me with you." God longs for your company and wants to see you blessed, but to make this possible, is your personal decision. Will you not say this prayer now, while you have the time and opportunity to do so - the decision is yours.
