The Law & Salvation / व्यवस्था और उद्धार – 8 – The Law / व्यवस्था – 3

The Relationship Between the Law and Salvation in the Bible

The Necessity of the Law

We have seen in previous articles that in the Christian faith, and for Christians, “good” is not according to the standards of the world and worldly ways, but only according to God's Word, the Bible. Then we saw that due to the original sin of our fore-parents, Adam and Eve, we have an inherent tendency to sin, sin indwells in man. That is why every human being is born with a sin nature and its effects. Therefore, in his natural unregenerate condition man keeps away from God and His Word, unable to have fellowship with Him. Because of his humanly indelible sin, man cannot ever become pure, holy and unacceptable in the sight of God by any of his actions or efforts. According to the Bible, the only one good is God; and God has given to us humans, His standard of righteousness and holiness, his Law, so that we can learn and understand what is good in the sight of God. Now a great problem confronts men, that in spite of having God's Law, man could never follow it completely, nor could he extricate himself out of the state of sin through use of the Law of God – the reasons we will see in subsequent articles. So, in the New Testament, for the remission of our sins, through the Lord Jesus Christ's sacrifice and resurrection, the way of being righteous and good in God's sight for all human beings has been made available to all through coming to faith in the Lord; and the observance of the Law has been taken away for us. Now the question before us is why is it that the Law of God could not make man good, why could it not give salvation? We will begin to look at this inadequacy of the Law in today's article and in the articles to follow.

Before we can understand why the Law can't make humans good, why can't it save them, we need to understand the background and related things about God's giving of the Law. Man, whether he is a Christian, or from among God's chosen people, i.e., the Israelites/Jews; or from the Gentiles; If he believes in any god, he also believes and understands that he has to give an account of his life to that god at some time or the other, and in one way or the other. He has to receive the reward or consequences of his deeds and actions from that God, in some form. That is why he keeps on trying to do some work or effort in this physical life to keep his god happy. Our topic is not to get into a discussion about the various gods of human beings, or their being right or wrong, true or false, etc. Christians through their lives of faith; Jews by obeying the Law of Jehovah; and the Gentiles by their works want to make themselves good, acceptable, and worthy of a good reward in the sight of their god. Their expected reward may be happiness and prosperity on this earth, or it may be attaining to heaven and its blessings in the hereafter, or, according to the belief of some Gentiles, it may be a good rebirth and attainment of something good in that rebirth.

In other words, all the people who believe in any god have an idea of facing judgement and getting the results of their actions one day, from whoever that god is according to the belief of that person, and in whichever way their god may reward them. Even if people do not believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and Jehovah, yet within them, their Creator God Jehovah, has also put a conscience that tells them that they are responsible for their lives to a higher divine authority. Those who know and believe in the Bible and the Lord Jesus also know that at the end of the world, the signs of which are now abundantly evident everywhere, will be judged by the Lord Jesus. Those who do not know and believe in the Lord Jesus and Jehovah, are ignorant of things related to this actual final judgment, are therefore entangled in misconceptions about the things related to this judgment, and about eventually having to stand before the judgment throne of the Lord Jesus, to give their account to Him (Revelation 20:12-15).

In the context of this judgment, look at two Bible quotes:

·        Acts 17:30-31 Truly, these times of ignorance God overlooked, but now commands all men everywhere to repent, because He has appointed a day on which He will judge the world in righteousness by the Man whom He has ordained. He has given assurance of this to all by raising Him from the dead.

·        Romans 2:16 in the day when God will judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ, according to my gospel.

A few things are evident from these two quotes:

1.   It is inevitable for all to be judged, whether they believe in the Lord Jesus as God or not; and that one day for that judgment to happen, has already been set and appointed by God.

2.   For that Judgment Day, the Judge to do justice has also been appointed; And that Judge would be the Lord Jesus Christ, about whom, by raising him from the dead, God the Father has provided incontrovertible proof, and made it known to all.

3.   Judgment, through the Lord Jesus Christ, will be done on the basis of the things of His Gospel, and there is nothing that will escape being evaluated in that judgment; all the secret things will also be revealed, and people will be evaluated for everything.

4.   That's why God is commanding all men everywhere, to repent now while there is time. Because, if there is a solution, it is not through some kind of works, but through repentance for sins and seeking forgiveness for them from the Lord Jesus; else punishment for sins will be inevitable.

We all saved and Born-Again Christians, know these four things very well; whether or not we take them seriously, is another matter! But in the context of these articles and our current topic of discussion, the opening sentence of Acts 17:30, "Truly, these times of ignorance God overlooked" is not only interesting but also is very important. It becomes even more interesting and intriguing when we consider that the context of this verse refers to the idolatry of the Athenians and their many deities, which is why Paul is preaching this message among them.

Why is it written for God who hates idolatry, that He is not only willing to overlook their times of ignorance, instead of punishing them according to their idolatry? To understand why God is willing to overlook these times of ignorance, we will very briefly look at the history and events of the time from the creation of man till now, in the next article. But for now, we all have to once again take heed to and obey God's command to repent as given in Acts 17:30 - and this is applicable to all human beings everywhere, including Christians; since they too come in the purview of “commands all men everywhere to repent” in much the same way as people of any other religion or society.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Repenting of your sins, and asking the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely, surrendering yourself to Him - is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. You only have to say a short but sincere prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ willingly and with a penitent heart, and at the same time completely commit and submit your life to Him. You can also make this prayer and submission in words something like, “Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sins and repent of them. I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself, paying for them through your life.  Because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, and you rose again from the grave on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God and have freely provided to me the forgiveness, and redemption from my sins, through faith in you. Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.

The Law & Salvation / व्यवस्था और उद्धार – 7 – The Law / व्यवस्था – 2

The Relationship Between the Law and Salvation in the Bible

What is the Law according to the Bible? – 2

In the preceding article we had started to see about the Law given through Moses by God, in context of salvation and becoming acceptable to God. We had seen that quite unlike the commonly held concept, the Law is not the following and observances of the offerings, sacrifices, feasts, traditions and rituals, etc.; rather, all these are symbols and forms given in the Old Testament of the life, work, and sacrifice of the Lord Jesus Christ. Then we had seen from Matthew 22:35-40 what the Lord Jesus had said to explain about the Law; and this had again been stated in Romans 13:9 as well.

Here we see this very important fact that the Lord Jesus, i.e. The Living Word who became flesh and dwelt among us (John 1:1, 14), has Himself defined for us that the Law of God is not the observance of any customs, religion, festivals, traditions, and rituals etc. Rather, God's Law is that which prescribes and directs our sincere relationship, submission, dedication, and behavior with God and with man, having a sincere love for other people. A commitment to God and His Word which is over and above all else.

The Ten Commandments in Exodus 20:1–17 are a slightly expanded version of these laws that guide and direct our attitude and behavior towards God and other human beings, in the manner God wants it done. Very briefly, the first four of these Ten Commandments (20:1-11) are about man's relationship and behavior with God; And the remaining six (20:12-17) are about mans' relationships and interactions with other people. The Ten Commandments here are, in a way, similar to the headings of the chapters of a book; The heading only refers to what is in the chapter; while the details are found in the text of that chapter. Similarly, these commandments refer to ten different chapters of our association and relationship with God and men, and the text or content of these chapters, i.e., these aspects of our relationships is provided in other places of God's Word.

That is why whenever the Israelites deviated from the observance of the actual spirit of the Law, and only formally fulfilled the customs, feasts, festivals, rituals, i.e., merely the text of the Law, they then fell into moral and religious decline, and ended up being subjects of the wrath of God (Isaiah 1:11-20; Malachi 1:10). Exactly the same mentality and state of relationship with God is also seen in the present-day Christians and Christian society. Even in the days of the earthly ministry of the Lord Jesus Christ, there was the Temple of God, where all festivals and ceremonies were held and celebrated, offerings and sacrifices were made according to the Law, the God’s Word was read, heard and taught; but everything was ritualistic. The minds not only of the people, but even of their religious leaders, were far from God (Matthew 15:8); And the Lord called his temple a den of thieves (Matthew 21:13)! The leaders of the religion had corrupted the stature of the temple, worship, and observance of the Law, making it a formality, a mere exercise of tradition. Instead of God's Word, they taught the people their own rules and regulations, their contrived words and laws (Matthew 15:3-9; Isaiah 29:3; see also Isaiah 1:1-17). And inside the same Temple of God, religious leaders plotted and executed a conspiracy to betray and kill the Lord God Jesus Christ. Is not the same condition rampant today amongst Christians and in the Christian society also, where every denomination, creed, and community, has its own set of rules and regulations, all apart from the Word of God. All of these denominations, sects, and communities value the observance of the rules and regulations and rituals they have made, value their own words more than the observance of the Word of God, and teach only their own words to be right, and of others to be wrong. And at everyone's places of worship, plans are made and implemented by their leaders to criticize others, stay segregated from others, and even oppose them; while preaching messages of God’s love for everyone and of universal brotherhood in Christ Jesus, which they themselves never put into practice.

In the next article we will see why the law cannot save us, what are its limitations; and then we will also see why it has been said that by following the Law one can enter life. But for now, those who today consider themselves to be good and acceptable in the eyes of God, by virtue of their being adherents of their religion and denomination, its rules, traditions, and ordinances, they must seriously introspect and consciously understand the reality (1 Thessalonians 5:21; 1 Corinthians 10:12; 2 Corinthians 13:5), and accept what the apostle Paul wrote by the Holy Spirit, "Truly, these times of ignorance God overlooked, but now commands all men everywhere to repent” (Acts 17:30). This is not merely a suggestion, or merely a thought expressed by God, but it is His command; and in “all men everywhere”, Christians i.e., all people of Christendom, world-wide, are also included in just the same way as people of any other religion or society.

The Law & Salvation / व्यवस्था और उद्धार – 6 – The Law / व्यवस्था - 1

The Relationship Between the Law and Salvation in the Bible

What is the Law according to the Bible? – 1

In previous articles we have seen that in the Christian faith and for the Christian Believers it is God's Word that defines good, and identifies the difference between good and evil. The God of the Bible and His Word and instructions cannot be correctly evaluated and assessed on the basis of worldly standards and things. Then we saw that man, right from his birth, enters the world with sin and this condition remains with him till his death. That is why throughout the life of man there remains a separation between him and God. Therefore, no man, in his natural, unregenerate physical condition, can ever please God; neither by his goodness, nor by any of his actions, can he do anything to become acceptable to God. And in the previous article, we saw that by the Biblical definition it is only God who really is good. We also saw that in the New Testament the Lord Jesus Christ, and in the Old Testament the God Jehovah have said that man can enter life by obeying God's Law; which now appears to be a strange paradox, an inexplicable situation. To solve this apparent contradiction or paradox, it is necessary for us to understand what exactly is the Law that is being talked about?

People are confused that when for Old Testament people it was made mandatory to keep that Law, it was strongly emphasized that they do so, and at the same time they were assured by God that by keeping the Law they would live, then what's the problem with our obeying and following the same Law today? And then why, in the New Testament, in the Christian faith, is it emphasized so much that it is necessary to realize and accept that by good deeds, by the observance of the Law, by being born in a particular religion or family, even being born in Christian religion or in a Christian family and following its beliefs does not ever make a person saved or acceptable to God? Why is it necessary for everyone to individually repent and personally receive the forgiveness of sins from the Lord Jesus Christ? Why then is it said and taught that Christians have no need to keep the Law, despite it being God's Law, and the Lord God speaking of entering life by observing it? And why is it taught in the New Testament that no one will benefit from keeping the Law, nor by observing it will anyone be able to enter the kingdom of God, or be acceptable to God?

The general understanding of the people is that the Law of the Old Testament, means the observance of the offerings, sacrifices, festivals, statutes, ordinances given in the first five books of Moses. But the reality is that these things are not the Law. All these things are various processes of reminding us of being guilty according to the standards of the Law, about the state of our sinfulness, and the fact for us an innocent animal must bear our sins and its life be sacrificed; all of these are various symbols and forms given in the Old Testament of the life, work and sacrifice of the Lord Jesus Christ. These are rituals to remind us of the works and qualities of God. Though these rituals and methods can repeatedly remind us of our sin, but they can never permanently take away our sin (Hebrews 10:3-4).

Then what is the Law? Let us understand and learn this from the answer given by the Lord Jesus Christ to a Scribe, who asked him about the greatest commandment of God: “Jesus said to him, "'You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.' This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets” (Matthew 22:37-40; see from 35-40 + Romans 13:9). We will continue learning more and understanding better about the Law in the next article.

The Law & Salvation / व्यवस्था और उद्धार – 5 – Being Good/ भला होना - 4

The Relationship Between the Law and Salvation in the Bible

Who is good according to the Bible? – 2

In the previous, the first part of this article, we had seen that to become good enough to be acceptable to God, our goodness has to be according to God’s criteria. We cannot decide our own criteria and standards, and then impose them upon God, expecting Him to accept them and measure us by the yardsticks we prepare and give Him, and declare us to be up to the mark. Acceptance to God has to be on His terms, not ours. In this context, we had started to look into certain parts of the conversation the Lord Jesus had with the Rich Young Ruler, given in the first three gospels. In Mark 10:18, we have the standard and definition of being good; in Lord Jesus’s own words – no one is good but God! This also implies that whoever is good by God’s measures, will be equal to God!

Now, in the next part of this conversation with the Rich Young Ruler, there seems to be a big contradiction related to being good. The Lord Jesus Christ told the rich young man who had come to Him, seeking the way to eternal life, “So He said to him, "Why do you call Me good? No one is good but One, that is, God. But if you want to enter into life, keep the commandments” (Matthew 19:17); i.e., according to the Lord Jesus Christ’s assurance in this statement, it seems that obedience to the commandments can provide entry into life, i.e., being with God for eternity, or being saved. In other words, salvation can be through works and following God’s Law. We should take note here that as is apparent from the conversation that followed, the commandments that the Lord is talking about here are the Ten Commandments, a part of God's Law in the Old Testament.

Not just the Lord Jesus Christ here, but God also said in the Old Testament that obeying His Law and statutes would ensure life for His people (Leviticus 18:5; Nehemiah 9:29; Ezekiel 20:11; etc.); and this is confirmed In the New Testament by the Holy Spirit through the apostle Paul (Romans 10:5).

Now on the one hand, God’s Word is saying that there is life in following the Law; and on the other hand, it is also saying that salvation is not by works but by faith, and no man is good, cannot do good. So, what is the solution to this paradox?

For this it is very important to know and understand, that what is the Law that is being talked about here; and what does the call to obeying the Law mean? If we do not understand this fundamental question, we will fall into error, be misguided and misled by Satan, as he has been doing to so many people.

What the Law is, we will see it in the next article. For a proper understanding of these things, we must keep in mind that God does not lie, there is no hypocrisy in Him, and there is no contradiction in His Word. For a proper understanding of the meaning of His Word One should never take anything out of its context and interpret it out of its context. At the same time, one must always take into account the other things in the Scriptures relating to that subject, making sure that the interpretation satisfies all the things stated in the Scriptures about the subject. That interpretation should never contradict any part of God’s Word; neither should it in any manner be inconsistent with anything in any part of the Bible, and it should not deviate even the slightest from the truth of God’s Word. All followers of Christ must at all times have complete faith in the Word of God. So, if you have ever been guilty of distrusting God's word in any way, of misinterpreting it, or of telling or giving wrong teachings, then by confessing your mistake to the Lord, and repenting for it, apologize to Him for it, and ask Him to give you a proper understanding of the Word.
