The Elementary Principles – 95

God’s Forgiveness and Justice – 1

In our study on “Eternal Judgment,” the sixth elementary principle given in Hebrews 6:1-2, we are starting on a new consideration today – whether what we have learnt so far about this topic contradicts some other, and well-known portions of God’s Word, or not? Before we get into this consideration, it is important to point out here that this sixth elementary principle is not about the judgments of God on earth of the Gentiles as well as the people of God – Israelites or Christian Believers; judgments which we find given in God’s Word the Bible. As is evident from the name of this sixth elementary principle Judgment, it is the last and final, the Eternal judgment. It is the judgment that will happen at the end; that is what we are considering and learning about, not the judgments carried out by God on earth so far. Therefore, no one should confuse this with the other judgments that God has done for the people of this world, whether Gentiles or the people of God, judgments that have been recorded in the Bible.

We also need to remind ourselves about some very important principles of interpreting God’s Word: Firstly, that there are no contradictions in the Word of God. No portion of God’s Word ever contradicts or goes into a different meaning than any other related portion; neither in text, nor in meaning, nor in implications, nor in its application. If there are any contradictions or confusion in interpretation, implication, or applications of any portion of God’s Word with some other, then it is due to some fault or short-coming in the interpretation, and not because of any error or fault in the Word of God. Therefore, if this happens, we need to re-evaluate the interpretation and understanding, and check it out for any misinterpretation or misunderstanding that might have inadvertently crept in, that should be corrected. Secondly, while interpreting and understanding God’s Word, it should always be interpreted in its context – both, the immediate context, as well as the remote, i.e., the context through the other related portions of God’s Word, in other portions, books, and chapters of the Bible. Every interpretation should satisfy all the contexts, the immediate as well as the remote; if it does not then it needs to be re-evaluated and corrected accordingly. The third important point to keep in mind is that no person is perfect, we are all fallible human beings, prone to making errors, and we all do make errors from time-to-time. Therefore, no one’s opinion or interpretation of a portion of God’s Word, especially when it does not satisfy the immediate or the remote contexts, can ever be seen as the absolute and irrefutable interpretation or teaching. No matter how popular and acceptable that person, his teachings, and interpretations might be, if it needs to be corrected, it should be corrected without any hesitation. God’s Word is always over and above any person’s word; and it is man’s word that has to be corrected to bring it in line with God’s Word, instead of the usual tendency of trying to manipulate God’s Word to suit someone’s understanding and interpretation of it.

With the above in mind, we will begin considering the next aspect of eternal judgment, the sixth elementary principle – God’s assurance of forgiving and forgetting sin, and still saying that everything good and bad about the Believers will be laid open and judged. Quite understandably, this creates a lot of confusion in the hearts of Christian Believers, and seems to go against what we have seen and learnt about the eternal judgment so far. God in His Word has assured that He blots away our sins like a thick cloud (Isaiah 44:22), throws them behind His back (Isaiah 38:17), He will never remember them (Isaiah 43:25), and if we accept our sin and apologize to Him for them, He will freely forgive and restore us (1 John 1:9). If all this is true, then how can God be taking an account of the bad things from the Christian Believers, as has been shown in the preceding articles that He will do? All of this about God forgiving and forgetting is absolutely true; but equally true is what we have seen about the judgment above, and we will see how these seemingly contradictory aspects are not contradictory, but actually are complementary, and can be reconciled by keeping the contexts in mind.

The unfortunate part is that many Christian Believers, even the mature ones, i.e., the Christian leaders, preachers, and teachers, have taken and used these promises of God, of forgiving and forgetting sins, as a license to sin. They sin, at times knowingly and deliberately; and then having enjoyed the pleasure, and having gained the physical benefits of that sin, they then quite dramatically accept that sin before God and ask Him to forgive them for it. They claim the related Bible verses about it, they claim to “cover the sin in the blood of the Lord Jesus” and believe that by doing this all has become okay and clean. And then, after sometime, they go ahead do the same, or some similar, or some other sin, and then repeat the same process of acknowledging and apologizing for their sin. These Believers have literally made this attribute of God’s forgiveness, a license to sin. Through them, their followers, and those who learn teachings about God’s Word from them, they also pick-up, learn, and start practicing this tendency of taking God’s forgiveness and forgetting sin as a license to sin. But as has been said earlier, God cannot be disobeyed, taken lightly, or mocked; there will be a price to pay for doing this.

To understand how the forgiveness and forgetting of sins by God does not contradict His judging everything good or bad done by the Christian Believers, we will have to go back to the Garden of Eden and see about what happened with the entry of sin into the world, and then also consider how God has dealt with the sin for us, what He has done for us. In the next article we will first consider a related topic and then we will start considering this topic.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Repenting of your sins, and asking the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely, surrendering yourself to Him - is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. You only have to say a short but sincere prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ willingly and with a penitent heart, and at the same time completely commit and submit your life to Him. You can also make this prayer and submission in words something like, “Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sins and repent of them. I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself, paying for them through your life.  Because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, and you rose again from the grave on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God and have freely provided to me the forgiveness, and redemption from my sins, through faith in you. Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.

The Elementary Principles – 94

Judgment of Believers – 8

In the last article we have seen other passages from God’s Word the Bible that confirm that the judgment will be of the Christian Believers, will be done by the Lord Jesus, openly and impartially, without any bias of any sort. We have also seen that everything, about every person – whether it is good or bad, whether in their lives or in their heart, will first be made public and open, and then in the presence of everyone a fair assessment and giving of appropriate rewards and consequences will be done, so no one will have any doubts about what they or anyone else has received. This also lends support to what we considered in the previous article from 1 Corinthians 3:13-15, that everyone’s works will be thoroughly and minutely examined, nothing will escape, so  “…that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad” (2 Corinthians 5:10), i.e., the Lord will take into account both the good as well as the bad of every person, and accordingly, impartially give to each one whatever rewards and consequences they are worthy of.

No one can live a hypocritical life of any manner, and get away with it; everything will be uncovered, brought out and judged. David had warned Solomon that God searches and knows even the intents of the thoughts in one’s heart “As for you, my son Solomon, know the God of your father, and serve Him with a loyal heart and with a willing mind; for the Lord searches all hearts and understands all the intent of the thoughts. If you seek Him, He will be found by you; but if you forsake Him, He will cast you off forever” (1 Chronicles 28:9). The Lord Jesus affirmed it in John 2:24-25 “But Jesus did not commit Himself to them, because He knew all men, and had no need that anyone should testify of man, for He knew what was in man.”

But it may be asked, why lay open and evaluate even the things in one’s heart, things that have not been done or acted upon, but just thought about? Why should they be tried as if they were done by the person? Why this opening up will be done can be understood in light of passages like Matthew 5:27-28, Mark 7:20-23, and James 1:13-15. These references show that all sin begins as thoughts in a person’s heart, sins grow there in the heart, and at an opportune moment, those sins get committed by the person. Therefore, God regards any sinful thoughts given place and pondered over in our hearts, as equivalent to sins that we have already committed – since sooner or later they will be committed – Satan will ensure that they are done. Thereby it becomes apparent why even the things in one’s heart will be revealed and judged. The only remedy is to not let anything sinful stay in our hearts at all, rather fill our hearts with God’s Word (Psalm 119:11; Colossians 3:16).

There is an unBiblical but popular misconception prevalent amongst most Christians and even the Christian Believers, that salvation can be lost, unless it is maintained by a proper Christian lifestyle. The basis of this argument is that if salvation is permanent and eternal, then after being saved, anyone can sin to their hearts content, and not fear anything, since they will go to heaven in any case. This is not the topic for our discussion, and it has also been discussed in some earlier articles in other topics, so we will not be going into its details now. But to those who hold this wrong concept about God and His judgment, from the above and what we have seen in the preceding articles, it should be evident to them that no one will get away from any thing done or even thought of by anyone; ponder again over what has been said about 1 Corinthians 3:13-15. Everyone will have to give a detailed and minute account, and receive the rewards and consequences of all that they have thought and done – good as well as bad. Moreover, as is written in Hebrews 12:5-11, even here on earth, the Lord chastens, at times severely, those of His children who live in an unworthy manner. So, salvation is eternal and permanent, but it is not a license to sin for anyone; no one can mock or disobey God, or take Him lightly, and get away with it.

How the forgiveness and forgetting of our sins by God, and His judgment of both good and bad of every person meet without any contradiction, we will begin to consider this from the next article.

The Elementary Principles – 93

Judgment of Believers – 7

In studying “Eternal Judgment,” the sixth elementary principle given in Hebrews 6:1-2, we have seen the rationale, why the judgment will be of the Believers, and not the unbelievers; and we have seen some Bible verses and passages that affirm that the judgment will be of the Believers. Today, we will continue considering some other verses and passages from God’s Word the Bible that speak of the judgment to be of the Believers. On being Born-Again, every Christian Believer is expected to live in accordance with 2 Corinthians 5:15, 17, which says, “and He died for all, that those who live should live no longer for themselves, but for Him who died for them and rose again. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” They are also expected to have a heavenly outlook “If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth” (Colossians 3:1-2) and store up treasures in heaven for themselves “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal” (Matthew 6:19-20). The Chrisitan Believers will be judged or evaluated, since they are to be given the rewards and consequences of their lives lived as Born-Again Christian Believers, i.e., their manner of living and behavior, the things they have said, done, or not done, after having repented of their sins and accepted the Lord Jesus as their Savior. Judgment time will be the time to see where each Christian Believer stands in fulfilling the expectations from him, the responsibilities, teachings, and instructions given to him; and then they will receive whatever is their due accordingly. Consider some other verses to help us better understand and affirm about this impending judgment of the Believers:

It is written in Malachi 3:16-17 Then those who feared the Lord spoke to one another, And the Lord listened and heard them; So, a book of remembrance was written before Him For those who fear the Lord And who meditate on His name. "They shall be Mine," says the Lord of hosts, "On the day that I make them My jewels. And I will spare them As a man spares his own son who serves him." From this we see that God listens to every conversation of the Believers, and all that the people of God say to each other, is not only heard by God but is also recorded in “book of remembrance” i.e., in a book which will be used “On the day” to reward God’s people.

In Matthew 25:14-30 and Luke 19:12-27, the two parables that the Lord gave about talents or money being given to his servants by an owner, the owner took an account only from those to whom he had given; and not from any of the others. Moreover, the owner took an account only of what he had given to them, and rewarded his servants according to the results they put before him – all of this was done openly, in front of all, without hiding anything from anyone. His taking an account was not unjust and arbitrary, and similarly his rewards were based upon how the servants had utilized what had been given to them. The Lord has given His salvation, His Holy Spirit, some gift of the Holy Spirit, and responsibilities to all of His people, to each and every one of His Believers; therefore, He will take an account from all the Believers of all that He has given to them, and how they have utilized His provisions for the Lord’s glory and Kingdom.

At the time of this accounting, or evaluation, this judgment, everything, including the things hidden in one’s heart will all be brought out into the open, as the Lord Jesus has said in Luke 12:2, “For there is nothing covered that will not be revealed, nor hidden that will not be known.” And Paul says in 1 Corinthians 3:13 “…each one's work will become clear; for the Day will declare it…” and in 1 Corinthians 4:5 “Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord comes, who will both bring to light the hidden things of darkness and reveal the counsels of the hearts. Then each one's praise will come from God.” Having made everything about everyone open and public, evident to all, the Lord will judge and give the rewards, and as we have seen in 2 Corinthians 5:10, it will include both the good and the bad things of every person. Therefore, no one will be able to accuse Him of any bias or partiality about carrying out the judgment. But imagine our condition when everything about us, in our lives and in our hearts, is brought out and laid open before everyone else. That is why the emphasis of the Lord has been to not let any wrong thing come or dwell in the Believers; stop or eliminate it before it takes root in them; else there will be a heavy price to pay.

So, over and over in God’s Word, God has stated that the accounting will be from the Believers. We will continue to look into this and its implications in the next article.

The Elementary Principles – 92

Judgment of Believers – 6

We are studying the sixth elementary principle given in Hebrews 6:1-2, “Eternal Judgment” and have seen that unlike the general understanding related to the word “judgment” this Biblical judgment will not be of the unbelievers, the unsaved, and the unrepentant; rather, it will be the judgement or assessment of the Born-Again Christian Believers, to give them the rewards and consequences of the lives they have lived on earth since the time of their being saved, or Born-Again. Since this concept is radically different from the commonly held belief about judgment, therefore, in the past few articles we have reiterated the reasons for this, and have supported this through Biblical passages and examples. We ended the last article by mentioning another verse from God’s Word the Bible, that supports and speaks of the judgment of all the Christian Believers, i.e., 2 Corinthians 5:10 “For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad” and today we will consider the implication of what the Holy Spirit has inspired Paul to write for our learning.

As is evident, this verse, 2 Corinthians 5:10, is from the letter Paul wrote to the Church, i.e., the Christian Believers in Corinth. In other words, it is primarily addressed to the Christian Believers, the members of the Lord’s Church, the children of God through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, the pronouns used here also primarily refer to the Christian Believers. This is further affirmed by Paul’s use of “we” in this verse; through using “we” Paul has included himself amongst those to whom this verse is addressed. This once again affirms that this verse is for and to the Christian Believers, and not any unbelievers or unsaved persons. Now, let us look at the implications of this verse.

The Holy Spirit through Paul makes it clear in very straightforward language that “we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ” i.e. every Christian Believer, including even the Apostle Paul, will have to appear before the judgment seat of the Lord Jesus. In the initial article on this topic, we had seen from Acts 17:31 that God has appointed a day of judgment, and has made the Lord Jesus the judge. This verse affirms both those points – there will be a judgment, and the judge for that judgment will be Lord Jesus Christ, and all Christian Believers will have to stand before the Lord for their judgment; there will be no exceptions. Now ponder over this, if it is mandatory for a person like Paul to stand before the judgment seat of Christ to give an account, then who can expect to be excused for any reason?

Can any of the present day religious preachers, teachers, and leaders stand up to Paul the Apostle and claim to be even equal, let alone be better than him? Think of Paul’s standing in firmly in his faith in the Lord and in his calling, commitment to the Lord, his standing for his ministry at any cost, his working as much and as hard as he could to fulfill his God given responsibilities till his last moments, his knowledge of the Scriptures, and the heavenly revelations that he received for his ministry? Yet, if Paul will be standing before the Lord to give and account, then on what grounds can anyone expect to be excused from standing before the Lord to be judged? Therefore, in that case why shouldn’t everyone, especially the Christian Believers not prepare themselves for this judgment, while they have time and opportunity? Why don’t they teach and urge others tp prepare for this inevitable judgment?

We will continue to see further on this topic from God’s Word in the next article.
