Things Related to Christian Living – 8

The Four Pillars of Christian Living - 1 - Word (1)

By Peter’s sermon, given under the power of the Holy Spirit, and based on the Scriptures, the hearts of many of the devout Jews, assembled in Jerusalem for the feasts and offerings according to the Law, were pricked; and they wanted to know what to do next. In this context, in Acts 2:38-42 are recorded seven things taught to them; the first three, given in verses 38-41 were spoken of by Peter and these are the three steps to being saved or being Born-Again and becoming a follower or disciple of the Lord Jesus - the primary requirement. Then in verse 42, “And they continued steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers” are given four things, that these saved, or Born-Again followers of the Lord Jesus did steadfastly. From here onwards, as the new Believers continued to practice these things steadfastly, in the subsequent chapters of the book of Acts, we see a rapid growth of the Christian Believers. These four things, namely, Apostles’s Doctrine; Fellowship; Breaking of Bread; and Prayers are also known as the “Pillars of Christian Life.” In other words, these four things are essential to provide stability and strength to the Christian Believer’s life. If even one of them is missing, or is weak, or is done perfunctorily, in any Believer’s life, then his spiritual life will be weak and unstable, and allow Satan to create problems in him and through him. Therefore, all four of them have to be maintained diligently and steadfastly in every Christian Believer’s life. From today, we will start considering these four, one-by-one.

The first of these four is “Apostle’s Doctrine” i.e., the doctrinal teachings being given at the time of the first Church by the Apostles. The Lord Jesus, in His Great Commission given to His disciples, the Apostles, before His ascension, had commanded them to go into the world, preach the gospel, and those who believe in the gospel, they should be baptized and should receive the teachings that the Lord had given to His disciples (Matthew 28:18-20). Remember, this was the time when only the present day “Old Testament” existed as the written Scriptures. Under the inspiration and guidance of the Holy Spirit (2 Timothy 3:16; 2 Peter 1:21), the teachings of the Lord Jesus were mostly being delivered and propagated orally, while some things were also taught through letters written to various churches and to people, and some of the Lord’s followers were engaged in writing these teachings down for posterity (2 Peter 1:12-15). The foundation of these teachings was what the Lord Jesus had taught (1 Corinthians 3:11). The Apostles expounded and taught them to the people, while also showing how the Lord’s teachings fulfilled the things written in the Old Testament (Luke 24:27, 44-47; Acts 8:35; 9:22; 17:2-3; 18:5, 24-25, 28; 26:22-23; 28:23; 1 Corinthians 15:3-4; Ephesians 2:20). Through these, i.e., the Scriptures and the Lord’s teachings, Paul in his farewell address to the Elders of the Church in Ephesus could make the bold claim that he had taught to them the whole counsel of God (Acts 20:20, 27). Later, after the required teachings had been written down under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, the teachings and writings required to form the “New Testament” were later compiled, and then the Old Testament and the New Testament were combined to give us the Bible, as we have it in our hands today.

What we see through this brief narrative is that the Old Testament is the basis or foundation of the New Testament. The whole of the Old Testament speaks about the Lord Jesus and His redemptive work. To learn the whole counsel of God, one has to study both the Old as well as the New Testament. God, has given to every Believer the Helper to teach His Word to them, His Holy Spirit (John 14:16, 26). Without spending time with God’s Word, reading, meditating, and learning it, no one can know God’s counsel about anything, nor receive God’s guidance and blessings in their Christian lives. The importance of reading and studying God’s Word can be understood by the fact that in the whole Bible, there is only one sign, on the basis of which one can truly affirm that he loves God; and that is by the love the person has for God’s Word (John 14:21, 23). In other words, in the Lord Jesus’s own words, those who love God, will also love His Word, and spend time with it. Else, Biblically speaking, their claims of loving God are baseless and false. This should not be surprising at all, since the Lord Jesus Christ is the Word of God, who became flesh and dwelt amongst us (John 1:1, 14). So, how can one claim to love Him in His divine spiritual form, but ignore Him, be uncaring about Him, or deal merely perfunctorily with Him in His physical form?

If you claim to love God, then demonstrate it by loving His Word. If you want God to spend time with you, have Him speak to you and guide you, then start spending quality time with God’s Word, humbly and prayerfully. This is why the first pillar of the Christian life is being steadfast in the “Apostle’s Doctrine,” i.e., being steadfast and diligent in Bible study, personal as well as corporate in the Church. In the next article we will see some Biblical reasons to read and study the Bible.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Repenting of your sins, and asking the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely, surrendering yourself to Him - is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. You only have to say a short but sincere prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ willingly and with a penitent heart, and at the same time completely commit and submit your life to Him. You can also make this prayer and submission in words something like, “Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sins and repent of them. I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself, paying for them through your life.  Because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, and you rose again from the grave on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God and have freely provided to me the forgiveness, and redemption from my sins, through faith in you. Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.

In our current series on Growth through God's Word, we are presently considering the third category of teachings for Christian growth i.e., things related to practical Christian living. We have seen that though these teachings are spread all over the Bible, but at two places in God's Word, in Acts chapter 2 and Acts chapter 15, are given the teachings that not only led to a rapid growth in the Church, but also enabled the Believers to learn, understand, and live by the other teachings given in God’s Word. Therefore, in this series, we are concentrating upon these two groups of teachings. Presently we are considering the seven things given in Acts 2:38-42. We have seen that they, whose hearts had been pricked by God’s Word spoken to them through Peter under the power and guidance of the Holy Spirit, wanted to know what to do next? Peter asked them to do three things; of which, we have seen the first two, i.e., Repent and be Baptized. Both of these are big topics, but since we had already considered both of them in the earlier articles of this series, therefore we had briefly recapitulated them in the last two articles. Today we will consider the third thing said by Peter, and given in Acts 2:40, i.e., "...Be saved from this perverse generation;" i.e., they should take appropriate steps to stay safe and unharmed from the perverse people of the world, implying maintaining a distance from them, or staying away from them.

3. Be Separated: (Acts 2:40) We have already seen that repentance from one’s sins is the first step to salvation through faith in the Lord Jesus. The person who sincerely repents, believes and accepts the sacrifice made by the Lord Jesus on the Cross of Calvary for his sins, and accepts the Lord Jesus as his savior, submits his life to the Lord, to live in obedience to Him and His Word, as a disciple of the Lord Jesus Christ, becomes a child of God (John 1:12-13). From the moment of his salvation onwards, God the Holy Spirit comes to reside in him (Ephesians 1:13-14) permanently. The person is then to witnesses before the world about this inner change brought by coming to faith in the Lord Jesus through baptism. Therefore, it is apparent that from the moment of one’s salvation, of being Born-Again, the person has come under the Lordship of Lord Jesus, and belongs to Him; and this is affirmed by God’s Word the Bible, “Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own?” (1 Corinthians 6:19), and “and He died for all, that those who live should live no longer for themselves, but for Him who died for them and rose again. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new” (2 Corinthians 5:15,17). So, through coming to faith in the Lord Jesus and submitting his life to Him, the Believer hands over his life to the Lord, not to live as a servant or slave, but as a child of God. From that moment onwards, the Lord starts working in his life, transforming him into His likeness (2 Corinthians 3:18), planning for his peace and good (Jeremiah 29:11), and making everything eventually work for his benefit (Romans 8:28).

But to receive and be benefitted by all the privileges and rewards of being a child of God, it is necessary for every Believer to separate away from everything that is contrary to the ways of God. The Lord Jesus had said “No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon” (Matthew 6:24). The Apostle Paul asks, “...How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it?” (Romans 6:2). Though the Believer has to live his lifetime in the world, yet he cannot live with, or live like the world. He who claims to be a Believer, but still loves the world and the things of the world has not actually come to be a child of God, a Christian Believer, since he is still in enmity with God “Adulterers and adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God” (James 4:4); and the love for God is not in him “Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world--the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life--is not of the Father but is of the world. And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever” (1 John 2:15-17).

Just as the person in his sinful state, for the first two steps of repentance and baptism, took a decision in favor of God and acted upon it, under the guidance of God and His Word; similarly now for the third step, he again has to take this decision in favor of God and act upon it, under the guidance of God and His Word. Paul writes, “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God” (Romans 12:1-2); and “Therefore, Come out from among them And be separate, says the Lord. Do not touch what is unclean, And I will receive you. I will be a Father to you, And you shall be My sons and daughters, Says the Lord Almighty” (2 Corinthians 6:17-18).

It is not that this is something new, meant for the Christian Believers. God had said the same to the Israelites, when He delivered them from the slavery of Egypt. The Israelites were to be a peculiar people of God, fully surrendered and obedient to God, living as a holy nation, functioning as His priests (Exodus 19:5-6). They were not to make any covenant or compromises with the people amongst whom God was taking them to settle (Exodus 23:32-33). The Israelites were not follow their ways, nor adopt their methods of worship, but only to do what God told them to do (Deuteronomy 12:30-32). But the Israelites, despite making this covenant with God, did not stay faithful to their commitment, compromised with the people around them, adopted their ways and worship, and eventually paid a heavy price (Judges chapter 2; Psalms 106:35-40).

As stated in 2 Corinthians 6:17-18, above, God’s being a Father and blessing His children is conditional upon their not merely accepting, but actually treating Him as their Father, by separating themselves from the world, and being obedient to Him. If the Christian Believers live a life of compromise with the world, if they do not live up to their part of the covenant with God, then why should they expect God to be at their beck and call, and keep doing for them whatever they ask of Him? God has made it very clear in His Word, that though He takes care of everyone, even the ungodly and the evil (Matthew 5:45); but, His blessings and Fatherly care is with those who sincerely treat Him as their Father. Consider the Lord’s parable of the Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11-32). When the prodigal son took his share and went out into the world, though the yearning and love of the father’ heart was for him, but the father’s care and blessings did not go with him, till he came back to the father’s house, to live there separated from the ways of the world. The father allowed him to learn his lessons the hard way, and then when he realized what he needed to do, the father welcomed him back with open arms and restored him to his status in the family.

Therefore, those who decide to live as the people of God, should also decide and live separated from the world and its ways. From the next article we will start looking at the four things given in Acts 2:42, also known as the “pillars of Christian living.”

The Seven Steps of Christian Living - 3 - Baptism

In the previous article, we reviewed and briefly stated the principles underlying effective gospel preaching, under the power and guidance of the Holy Spirit. We did this based on Peter’s preaching of the gospel to the devout Jews gathered in Jerusalem to fulfill religious practices, feasts, offerings, in Acts chapter 2. There, we not only saw the essential principles of effective preaching of God’s Word, but also the response that those convicted by God’s Word should have. Then we saw that on the basis of the response of those whose hearts were pricked by God’s Word and the Holy Spirit, Peter asked them to do three things. Those who did those three things got added to the Church of the Lord Jesus, and then these followers of the Lord Jesus continued steadfastly in four more things for their spiritual growth and staying firm in the faith. All of this led to a rapid growth of the Christian Believers and Churches. Of the things spoken by Peter through the Holy Spirit, the first is repentance. We briefly recapitulated about it in the last article, since it has already been considered in detail in the earlier parts of this series. Of the seven things given in Acts 2:38-42, the second of the seven things is Baptism, which also has been considered in detail in the earlier parts of this series, so for now, this topic also we will only briefly recapitulate today.

2. Be Baptized: (Acts 2:38) As is stated by Peter to the Jews here, Baptism follows repentance. This was also the sequence insisted upon by John the Baptist, the man of God who started baptizing people after they repented of their sins and had turned to God, in Matthew 3:6-8. We see from this passage from Matthew that John the Baptist refused to baptize the religious leaders because they had not repented; they only wanted to use baptism as a mere formality to show to others and be pleasing to them. There is something very important to be understood here; that taking baptism does not make anyone righteous or acceptable in the eyes of God; and baptism does not even make them a “christian”. Baptism is only an external expression or witnessing of the change brought within the heart by repentance and acceptance of the Lordship of Jesus. As the Lord Jesus has said in Mark 16:15-16, “And He said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned” it is the one who does not believe, he is damned, not the one who does not get baptized. Implying that though believing and baptism, both are to be preached and taught; but a person is saved by believing in the Lord Jesus, and it is not baptism that saves anybody - the thief on the cross did not get baptized, and yet was promised paradise by the Lord Jesus. Similarly, in Matthew 28:19, the Lord Jesus has said “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” Notice that the Lord’s instructions are to baptize only those who became the disciples of the Lord. And people become disciples of the Lord Jesus by accepting Him as their savior, and repenting of their sins. In other words, baptism does not make anyone a disciple or follower of the Lord; but those who decide to become the disciples or followers of the Lord, they are to take baptism and express their decision to others.

There is this very common misunderstanding prevalent amongst most Christians, that it is baptism that saves. This misunderstanding is based upon the impression that the construction of Peter’s sentence creates in Acts 2:38 “Then Peter said to them, "Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” From this it is generally but wrongly understood that Peter has said that taking baptism is required for the remission of sins and for receiving the Holy Spirit; i.e., for being saved. But actually, what Peter is saying, and is supported by the rest of the Scriptures, is that "for the sake of the forgiveness and remission of sins that you have received from the Lord, you should take baptism." It is the construction of the sentence spoken by Peter, that Satan exploits to create this misunderstanding and confusion. To understand it better, consider the sentence: "let everyone of you be enrolled in the Church for being Christian" - the meaning is obvious - because you are Christian therefore you should enroll yourself in the Church. It would be incorrect to assume that by enrolling in the Church the person will become a Christian. In a similar manner Peter is saying that for the sake of the remission of sins you have received in the name of Jesus Christ, be baptized; and not what is commonly assumed and misunderstood that by being baptized people will receive the remission of sins.

Those who have repented and received the forgiveness of sins from the Lord Jesus, they also receive another gift - the indwelling of the Holy Spirit of God in them permanently. Quite unlike another misconception related to salvation, no one needs to do anything extra or to wait to receive the Holy Spirit as is evident from verses like Acts 19:2; Galatians 3:2; Ephesians 1:13-14; etc. Moreover, there is another related misconception and misinterpretation of God’s Word about “Baptism of the Holy Spirit” and its being a separate or a second experience. Whereas, the Biblical fact is that it is the receiving of the Holy Spirit at the moment of salvation, that has very clearly been referred to in God’s Word as being baptized by the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:4-5; 11:14-17). It is not a separate event or a second experience. This too is a big topic, and this too has been considered in detail earlier in this series along with the topic of Baptism, and in some earlier blog posts as well.

Those who are saved by repentance and forgiveness of sins through the Lord Jesus, become the children of God - John 1:12-13; they become the temples of the Holy Spirit who resides in them - 1 Corinthians 6:19-20, and by obeying the Holy Spirit they escape the lusts of the flesh - Galatians 5:16; Galatians 5:18 and the condemnation of sin - Romans 8:1. These saved or Born-Again children of God are to get baptized as an act of witnessing for their faith in the Lord before the world, and in obedience to the commandments of the Lord.

In the next article we will carry on from here and consider the third thing said by Peter - to separate themselves from the perverse and sinful generation.
