मसीही जीवन के चार स्तम्भ - 4 - प्रार्थना (2) 

हम व्यावहारिक मसीही जीवन जीने से सम्बन्धित बातों के बारे में, परमेश्वर के वचन बाइबल में से प्रेरितों 2:42 में दी गई चौथी बात, प्रार्थना करना के बारे में देख रहे हैं। पिछले लेख में हमने देखा था कि प्रार्थना करना केवल परमेश्वर से कुछ माँगना, या उससे कुछ करने के लिए कहना नहीं है। वरन यह परमेश्वर से हर बात के बारे में दिल खोल कर वार्तालाप करना है। साथ ही प्रार्थना करना, परमेश्वर के साथ एक-पक्षीय वार्तालाप करना भी नहीं है। अर्थात परमेश्वर को अपनी माँगो, इच्छाओं, आवश्यकताओं, भावनाओं, आदि, के बारे में केवल सुनाना ही नहीं है; वरन परमेश्वर की बात को, उसके प्रत्युत्तर, उसके मार्गदर्शन को सुनना, उसकी इच्छा को जानना भी है। प्रभु यीशु ने यूहन्ना 10 अध्याय में कहा है कि उसकी भेड़ें उसका शब्द सुनती और समझती हैं। अर्थात, परमेश्वर की सुनने के लिए हमें न केवल उसकी भेड़ बनना पड़ेगा, वरन उसके शब्द के प्रति संवेदनशील भी बनना पड़ेगा। पिछले लेख का अन्त हमने इस बात के साथ किया था कि परमेश्वर चाहता है कि हम निरन्तर प्रार्थना में, अर्थात उससे वार्तालाप में बने रहें। आज हम यहीं से आगे देखेंगे।

 

प्रभु चाहता है कि उसके लोग, उसके साथ हर बात के लिए, निरन्तर प्रार्थना में लगे रहें। इस सन्दर्भ में बाइबल से तीन पदों को देखिए:

• लूका 21:36 - “इसलिये जागते रहो और हर समय प्रार्थना करते रहो कि तुम इन सब आने वाली घटनाओं से बचने, और मनुष्य के पुत्र के सामने खड़े होने के योग्य बनो।”

• इफिसियों 6:18 - “और हर समय और हर प्रकार से आत्मा में प्रार्थना, और बिनती करते रहो, और इसी लिये जागते रहो, कि सब पवित्र लोगों के लिये लगातार बिनती किया करो।”

• 1 थिस्सलुनीकियों 5:17 - “निरन्तर प्रार्थना में लगे रहो।”

हम जितना अधिक परमेश्वर के साथ वार्तालाप में रहेंगे, अर्थात प्रार्थना में रहेंगे, हम उतना अधिक उसके निकट बने रहेंगे, और हमारे जीवन उतने अधिक आशीषित रहेंगे। इसका यह अर्थ नहीं है कि मसीही विश्वासियों को हर समय हाथ जोड़कर, घुटने टेक कर, आँखें बन्द करके प्रार्थना के शारीरिक भाव में ही बने रहना चाहिए। वरन तात्पर्य यह है कि मसीही विश्वासियों को हर बात के लिए परमेश्वर के साथ निरन्तर वार्तालाप के भाव में, वार्तालाप की मनसा में बने रहना चाहिए। अर्थात हर बात के लिए, हर समय परमेश्वर से बातचीत करते रहना चाहिए, हर निर्णय से पहले परमेश्वर से पूछना, उसकी इच्छा जान लेना चाहिए, बात या परिस्थिति को परमेश्वर के हाथों में सौंपते रहना चाहिए।

 

इसका एक उत्तम उदाहरण राजा के सामने नहेम्याह की निःशब्द प्रार्थना है; नहेम्याह 1 और 2 अध्याय देखिए। यरूशलेम की दुर्दशा के बारे में सुनकर नहेम्याह बहुत दुखी था, वहाँ के बारे में कुछ करना चाहता था। वह प्रार्थना कर रहा था कि परमेश्वर राजा को, जिसका नहेम्याह प्याऊ था, नम्र करे (नहेम्याह 1:11)। नहेम्याह के मुख की उदासी देखकर राजा ने उससे उसकी उदासी का कारण पूछा, और डरते हुए, नहेम्याह ने यरूशलेम की दुर्दशा के बारे में बताया (नहेम्याह 2:3)। नहेम्याह की बात सुनकर, राजा ने अचानक और नहेम्याह के लिए पूर्णतः अप्रत्याशित रीति से, नहेम्याह से प्रश्न किया और जानना चाहा कि नहेम्याह क्या चाहता है? इस अप्रत्याशित परिस्थिति में, नहेम्याह ने तुरन्त ही मन में ही परमेश्वर से प्रार्थना की, और परमेश्वर द्वारा दी गई सद्बुद्धि के अनुसार, राजा को उत्तर दे दिया (नहेम्याह 2:4)। राजा ने नहेम्याह की बात मान ली, नहेम्याह को यरूशलेम की दीवार के पुनःनिर्माण का अधिकारी बनाकर, यह करने के लिए सभी सुविधाओं और आवश्यकताओं के लिए उपयुक्त अधिकार और प्रावधान प्रदान कर के नहेम्याह को यरूशलेम भेज दिया। कई समस्याओं और विपरीत परिस्थितियों तथा विरोध का सामना करते हुए, नहेम्याह ने कीर्तिमान स्थापित करते हुए न केवल यरूशलेम की दीवार का पुनःनिर्माण करवाया (नहेम्याह 6:15), बल्कि उसके इस कार्य के लिए उसे यहूदा का अधिपति भी बना दिया गया (नहेम्याह 5:14); और नहेम्याह का नाम तथा काम अनन्तकाल के लिए परमेश्वर के वचन में आदर के साथ दर्ज हो गया। परमेश्वर के साथ निरन्तर प्रार्थना के, अर्थात हर बात के लिए वार्तालाप करने, मार्गदर्शन माँगने के भाव में बने रहने, और ऐसा करने के परिणामों का यह एक अति उत्तम उदाहरण है।

लेकिन परमेश्वर यह क्यों चाहता है कि हम उसके साथ निरन्तर प्रार्थना के, या वार्तालाप के भाव में बने रहें? हम इसके बारे में अगले लेख में देखेंगे।

  

यदि आपने प्रभु की शिष्यता को अभी तक स्वीकार नहीं किया है, तो अपने अनन्त जीवन और स्वर्गीय आशीषों को सुनिश्चित करने के लिए अभी प्रभु यीशु के पक्ष में अपना निर्णय कर लीजिए। जहाँ प्रभु की आज्ञाकारिता है, उसके वचन की बातों का आदर और पालन है, वहाँ प्रभु की आशीष और सुरक्षा भी है। प्रभु यीशु से अपने पापों के लिए क्षमा माँगकर, स्वेच्छा से तथा सच्चे मन से अपने आप को उसकी अधीनता में समर्पित कर दीजिए - उद्धार और स्वर्गीय जीवन का यही एकमात्र मार्ग है। आपको स्वेच्छा और सच्चे मन से प्रभु यीशु मसीह से केवल एक छोटी प्रार्थना करनी है, और साथ ही अपना जीवन उसे पूर्णतः समर्पित करना है। आप यह प्रार्थना और समर्पण कुछ इस प्रकार से भी कर सकते हैं, “प्रभु यीशु, मैं अपने पापों के लिए पश्चातापी हूँ, उनके लिए आप से क्षमा माँगता हूँ। मैं आपका धन्यवाद करता हूँ कि आपने मेरे पापों की क्षमा और समाधान के लिए उन पापों को अपने ऊपर लिया, उनके कारण मेरे स्थान पर क्रूस की मृत्यु सही, गाड़े गए, और मेरे उद्धार के लिए आप तीसरे दिन जी भी उठे, और आज जीवित प्रभु परमेश्वर हैं। कृपया मुझे और मेरे पापों को क्षमा करें, मुझे अपनी शरण में लें, और मुझे अपना शिष्य बना लें। मैं अपना जीवन आप के हाथों में समर्पित करता हूँ।” सच्चे और समर्पित मन से की गई आपकी एक प्रार्थना आपके वर्तमान तथा भविष्य को, इस लोक के और परलोक के जीवन को, अनन्तकाल के लिए स्वर्गीय एवं आशीषित बना देगी।

Things Related to Christian Living – 60

The Four Pillars of Christian Living - 4 - Prayer (2)

We are looking into the fourth thing given in Acts 2:42 regarding the practical Christian living, i.e., praying. We had seen in the previous article that praying is not just asking something from God, or asking Him to do something. Rather, it is having an open-hearted conversation with God about everything. Moreover, prayer is not a one-sided conversation, a monologue with God. In other words, it is not telling God about our demands, desires, necessities, feelings etc.; but it is also listening to what God has to say, His response, His guidance, and His will. The Lord Jesus said in John chapter 10 that His sheep hear and understand His voice. Therefore, to be able to listen to God, not only will we have to become His sheep, but also become sensitive to His voice. We had ended the last article by saying that God wants that we should continually be in prayer, i.e., in conversation with Him. Today we will see ahead from here.

The Lord wants His people to always be in prayer with Him about everything. In this context consider three verses from the Bible:

• Luke 21:36 - “Watch therefore, and pray always that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that will come to pass, and to stand before the Son of Man."

• Ephesians 6:18 - “praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints”

• 1 Thessalonians 5:17 - “pray without ceasing”

The more we stay in conversation with God, i.e., in prayer, the nearer we will remain to Him, and the more blessed our lives will be. This does not mean that the Christian Believers have to always be on their knees, with folded hands and closed eyes in the praying posture. But the meaning is that the Christian Believers should always be in an attitude of conversing with God about all things or in a mentality of praying to God for all things. In other words, at all times, for all things keep conversing with God, ask God for His will before taking any decision, always keep placing every situation into God’s hands.

 

An excellent example of a silent prayer is Nehemiah’s prayer before the King; see Nehemiah chapters 1 and 2. Nehemiah was very saddened on learning the plight of Jerusalem, and he wanted to do something about it. He was praying that God would humble the King, whose cup-bearer Nehemiah was (Nehemiah 1:11). The King asked Nehemiah the reason for the sad expression on his face; Nehemiah was dreadfully afraid, but told the King about the plight of Jerusalem (Nehemiah 2:2-3). On listening to what Nehemiah had to say, the King suddenly and quite unexpectedly asked Nehemiah what he wanted done? Nehemiah, surprised by the unexpected turn of events, prayed to God silently in his heart, and by the wisdom given to him by God, gave the answer to the King (Nehemiah 2:4). The King agreed to Nehemiah’s request, made him in-charge of rebuilding the wall of Jerusalem, sanctioned all the requirements and necessities for rebuilding the wall, and sent him to Jerusalem. Nehemiah had to face many problems, oppositions, and difficulties, but he rebuilt the wall of Jerusalem in record time (Nehemiah 6:15). For this accomplishment, he was made the Governor of Judah, and his name and feat were honorably recorded in God's Word forever. This is an excellent example of continually praying to God, i.e., continually conversing with Him for everything, asking His guidance, and the resulting accomplishments because of this attitude.

But why does God want that we should be continually in prayer i.e., conversation with Him? We will look at this in the next article.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Repenting of your sins, and asking the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely, surrendering yourself to Him - is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. You only have to say a short but sincere prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ willingly and with a penitent heart, and at the same time completely commit and submit your life to Him. You can also make this prayer and submission in words something like, “Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sins and repent of them. I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself, paying for them through your life.  Because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, and you rose again from the grave on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God and have freely provided to me the forgiveness, and redemption from my sins, through faith in you. Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.

परमेश्वर के वचन से बढ़ोतरी की इस श्रृंखला के आरम्भ में हमने देखा था कि मसीही विश्वास के जीवन में उन्नति और कलीसियाओं की बढ़ोतरी के लिए मसीही विश्वासियों को व्यक्तिगत रीति से परमेश्वर के सम्पूर्ण वचन को जानना और उसमें दृढ़ता से स्थापित होना आवश्यक है। साथ ही हमने यह भी देखा था कि वचन में तीन प्रकार की शिक्षाएं हैं जो मसीही विश्वास की उन्नति और कलीसियाओं की बढ़ोतरी के साथ सम्बन्धित रही हैं। ये तीन प्रकार की शिक्षाएं हैं - पहली, सुसमाचार से सम्बन्धित; दूसरी मसीही विश्वास की आरम्भिक बातों (इब्रानियों 6:1-2) से सम्बन्धित; और तीसरी, व्यावहारिक मसीही जीवन से सम्बन्धित। हम इन तीन में से पहली दो बातों के बारे में देख चुके हैं, और तीसरी के बारे में देख रहे हैं। व्यावहारिक मसीही जीवन से सम्बन्धित बातों के लिए हमने देखा था कि प्रेरितों 2 और 15 अध्याय में ये बातें दी गई हैं। प्रेरितों 2 अध्याय में सात बातें दी गई हैं, जिनमें से पहली तीन, जो मसीही विश्वास में जुड़ने से सम्बन्धित हैं, पतरस द्वारा किए गए प्रचार के अन्त की ओर हैं। और अगली चार, जिनका पालन आरम्भिक मसीही विश्वासी लौलीन होकर किया करते थे, प्रेरितों 2:42 में दी गई हैं। प्रेरितों 2:42 की इन चार बातों को मसीही विश्वास के स्तम्भ भी कहा जाता है। हमने इन चार में से पहली तीन बातों को देखा है, और आज से चौथी बात, प्रार्थना करने के बारे में देखना आरम्भ करेंगे।

सामान्यतः प्रार्थना करने से यही तात्पर्य समझा जाता है कि यह परमेश्वर से कुछ माँगना या कुछ करने के लिए कहना है - अपने लिए, अथवा किसी और के लिए। लेकिन वास्तव में परमेश्वर से कुछ माँगना या कुछ करने के लिए कहना, प्रार्थना करने का एक छोटा भाग है। परमेश्वर से प्रार्थना करना, परमेश्वर से वार्तालाप करना है। यह वार्तालाप किसी भी बात के बारे में हो सकता है। जैसे छोटे बच्चे अपने माता-पिता से खुले दिल से, निःसंकोच अपने मन की बात करते हैं, अपनी आवश्यकताएं और इच्छाएं ही नहीं, वरन हर वह बात जो उनके मन में होती है, बताते हैं, उनसे उसके बारे में बात करते हैं; वैसे ही प्रार्थना करना, परमेश्वर के साथ ऐसे ही खुले दिल और मन से बात करना है; अपने मन की हर बात को परमेश्वर के साथ बाँटना है। प्रार्थना में परमेश्वर पिता के बच्चे उससे अपनी सारी चिन्ताएँ, आवश्यकताएँ, भावनाएं, इच्छाएं, डर, समस्याएं, आनन्द, अपेक्षाएं, योजनाएं, आदि - सभी बातें, अपने जीवन से सम्बन्धित हर बात को उसे बताते हैं, और उस सर्वसिद्ध, सर्वज्ञानी पिता परमेश्वर से उन बातों के बारे में मार्गदर्शन लेते हैं, पिता की इच्छा जानते हैं, पिता की इच्छा को पूरा करने के बारे में निर्देश प्राप्त करते हैं। प्रार्थना करना एक-तरफा वार्तालाप नहीं है, कि हम अपनी ही बात परमेश्वर को सुनाते रहें। वरन प्रार्थना में हम न केवल अपनी बात परमेश्वर से कहते हैं, बल्कि परमेश्वर से उसकी कही हुई बात को, उसके निर्देशों और मार्गदर्शन को भी सुनते हैं।

परमेश्वर की बात सुनने के लिए उसकी आवाज़ के प्रति संवेदनशील होना आवश्यक है। प्रभु यीशु ने यूहन्ना 10:2, 27 पदों में कहा कि प्रभु की भेड़ें उसका शब्द सुनती हैं, पहचानती हैं, और उसके पीछे-पीछे चलती हैं। अर्थात, प्रभु की आवाज़ को, प्रभु की भेड़ें ही सुन और समझ सकतीं हैं। प्रभु ने यह भी कहा कि उसकी अन्य भेड़ें भी हैं, जो अभी तो उसके झुण्ड में नहीं हैं, किन्तु प्रभु उन्हें भी लेकर आएगा; और तब वे भी, उसके झुण्ड की अन्य भेड़ों के समान ही, प्रभु की आवाज़ को सुनेंगी (यूहन्ना 10:16)। यह कहकर प्रभु ने भविष्य में उस पर विश्वास करने और उसके शिष्य बनने वालों के बारे में संकेत दिया। और साथ ही यह कहकर कि तब एक ही झुण्ड और एक ही चरवाहा होगा, यह भी बताया कि वे भावी शिष्य उसके वर्तमान शिष्यों से किसी प्रकार से भिन्न नहीं होंगे। प्रभु की इस बात से हम, अपने विषय, प्रार्थना से सम्बन्धित दो बातों को सीखते हैं। पहली बात, प्रार्थना में प्रभु की बात सुनने और समझने के लिए प्रभु की भेड़ होना, अर्थात उसके जन, उसके परिवार के लोग होना, अनिवार्य है; जो यूहन्ना 1:12-13 के पालन के द्वारा ही सम्भव है। दूसरी बात, प्रभु अपनी सभी भेड़ों से समान रीति से बात करता है, कोई भिन्नता नहीं करता है। उसकी सभी भेड़ें, उसकी आवाज़ को समान रूप से सुनने और समझने की क्षमता रखती हैं। इसलिए यह कहना कि प्रभु की आवाज़ सुनने और समझने के लिए, प्रभु का जन बनने, अर्थात उद्धार पाने के अतिरिक्त और भी कुछ करने की आवश्यकता है, गलत है, वचन से संगत नहीं है, और प्रभु की कही बात के विरुद्ध जाना है।

प्रभु चाहता है कि उसके लोग, उसके साथ हर बात के लिए, निरन्तर प्रार्थना में लगे रहें। इसका यह अर्थ नहीं है कि मसीही विश्वासियों को हर समय हाथ जोड़कर, घुटने टेक कर, आँखें बन्द करके प्रार्थना के भाव में ही बने रहना चाहिए। प्रभु ऐसा क्यों चाहता है, यह कैसे किया जा सकता है, और मसीही विश्वासियों के लिए यह करना क्यों आवश्यक है, हम इसके बारे में अगले लेख में देखेंगे।

    

यदि आपने प्रभु की शिष्यता को अभी तक स्वीकार नहीं किया है, तो अपने अनन्त जीवन और स्वर्गीय आशीषों को सुनिश्चित करने के लिए अभी प्रभु यीशु के पक्ष में अपना निर्णय कर लीजिए। जहाँ प्रभु की आज्ञाकारिता है, उसके वचन की बातों का आदर और पालन है, वहाँ प्रभु की आशीष और सुरक्षा भी है। प्रभु यीशु से अपने पापों के लिए क्षमा माँगकर, स्वेच्छा से तथा सच्चे मन से अपने आप को उसकी अधीनता में समर्पित कर दीजिए - उद्धार और स्वर्गीय जीवन का यही एकमात्र मार्ग है। आपको स्वेच्छा और सच्चे मन से प्रभु यीशु मसीह से केवल एक छोटी प्रार्थना करनी है, और साथ ही अपना जीवन उसे पूर्णतः समर्पित करना है। आप यह प्रार्थना और समर्पण कुछ इस प्रकार से भी कर सकते हैं, “प्रभु यीशु, मैं अपने पापों के लिए पश्चातापी हूँ, उनके लिए आप से क्षमा माँगता हूँ। मैं आपका धन्यवाद करता हूँ कि आपने मेरे पापों की क्षमा और समाधान के लिए उन पापों को अपने ऊपर लिया, उनके कारण मेरे स्थान पर क्रूस की मृत्यु सही, गाड़े गए, और मेरे उद्धार के लिए आप तीसरे दिन जी भी उठे, और आज जीवित प्रभु परमेश्वर हैं। कृपया मुझे और मेरे पापों को क्षमा करें, मुझे अपनी शरण में लें, और मुझे अपना शिष्य बना लें। मैं अपना जीवन आप के हाथों में समर्पित करता हूँ।” सच्चे और समर्पित मन से की गई आपकी एक प्रार्थना आपके वर्तमान तथा भविष्य को, इस लोक के और परलोक के जीवन को, अनन्तकाल के लिए स्वर्गीय एवं आशीषित बना देगी।

The Four Pillars of Christian Living - 4 - Prayer (1)

At the beginning of this series on Growth Through God’s Word we had seen that for edification of Christian faith and growth of the churches, it is necessary for the Christian Believers to know all of God’s Word, and be firmly established in it. We had also seen that there are three kinds of teachings given in the Word that have been associated with edification of Christian faith and growth of the churches. These three kinds of teachings are - firstly, teachings related to the Gospel; secondly, teachings related to the Elementary Principles of Christian faith (Hebrews 6:1-2); and thirdly, teachings related to practical Christian living. Out of these three kinds of teachings, we have seen the first two, and are now considering the third kind, i.e., teachings related to practical Christian living. We have seen that in Acts chapters 2 and 15 some teachings related to practical Christian living have been given. Of these, in Acts 2, seven things are given. Of these seven the first three are related to coming into the Christian faith, and are found towards the end of Peter’s sermon. The next four are things that the initial Christian Believers used to do steadfastly, and are given in Acts 2:42. These four things of Acts 2:42 are also known as the “Four Pillars of Christian Living.” We have already considered the first three of the four, and from today we will begin considering the fourth one, i.e., praying.

Generally, by praying, it is commonly understood that it means asking God for something or to do something - for self, or for others. But in reality, asking God for something or to do something, is only a small part of praying. To pray to God, is to converse with God. This conversation can be about anything. Like little children talk to their parents with an open heart, without any hesitation share whatever they have on their hearts, speak it out to them; similarly, praying is having a similar open hearted unhesitant conversation with God. Prayer is nothing other than the children communing and conversing with their Father God; sharing with Him all their concerns, needs, feelings, desires, apprehensions, problems, joys, expectations, plans – anything and everything related to their lives, and seeking their absolutely perfect and all-knowing Heavenly Fathers guidance, will and instructions about everything. Prayer is not a monologue, a one-sided conversation, that only we keep telling God about our needs and wants. Rather, in prayer not only do we share our needs and wants with God, but also listen to God’s response, His guidance, and His instructions about what we have shared with Him.

To be able to listen to God, we have to be sensitive to God’s voice. The Lord has said in John 10:2, 27 that the Lord’s sheep listen to His voice, recognize it, and understand Him. The Lord also said that there were other sheep of His, that are not yet in the fold, and the Lord will be bringing them into the fold; and then they too will be like the other sheep already in the fold and similarly listen to the Lord’s voice (John 10:16). By saying this the Lord indicated about those who would come to faith in Him and become His disciples in the future. And, by saying that then there will be one-fold and one shepherd, He also told that those future disciples will be no different than the present ones. From this, we learn two important things about our present topic, prayer. The first thing is that to be able to listen and understand the Lord’s voice in prayer, one has to be His sheep, belong to Him, be a member of His family; and this is possible only by obeying John 1:12-13. The second thing is that the Lord converses with all His sheep in a uniform manner, He does not differentiate amongst them. And, all His sheep have the same capability of listening to Him and understanding Him. Therefore, to say that to be able to hear and understand the Lord’s voice requires something extra, something other than being saved is a wrong teaching, is inconsistent with God’s Word, and goes contrary to what the Lord has said.

The Lord wants His people to always be praying to Him for everything. This does not mean that the Christian Believers should always be in an attitude of prayer, on their knees, with folded hands and closed eyes. Why does God want this, and how this can be done, and why it is essential for the Christian Believers, we will see about this in the next article.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Repenting of your sins, and asking the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely, surrendering yourself to Him - is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. You only have to say a short but sincere prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ willingly and with a penitent heart, and at the same time completely commit and submit your life to Him. You can also make this prayer and submission in words something like, “Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sins and repent of them. I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself, paying for them through your life.  Because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, and you rose again from the grave on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God and have freely provided to me the forgiveness, and redemption from my sins, through faith in you. Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.

पिछले लेख में हमने 1 कुरिन्थियों 10:23-24 से देखा था कि प्रभु परमेश्वर व्यक्ति के मन को देखता है और व्यक्ति का आँकलन उसके मन की दशा कि अनुसार करता है, न कि उसके बाहरी स्वरूप और कार्यों, कार्यविधि तथा वैधानिक रीति से सही होने, या सांसारिक मानकों के अनुसार स्वीकार्य होने के आधार पर। यहाँ, पद 23 के अन्त में एक और बहुत महत्वपूर्ण बात कही गई है, कि मसीही विश्वासी को उन बातों में लगे रहना चाहिए जिन से उन्नति होती है। पौलुस इसी विचार को आगे बढ़ाते हुए पद 24 में कहता है कि मसीही विश्वासी को, अपनी नहीं, बल्कि औरों की भलाई में लगे रहना चाहिए। कहने का तात्पर्य है कि जिस मसीही विश्वासी का मन ठीक होगा, वह न केवल अपनी उन्नति में लगा रहेगा, वरन औरों के लिए सही काम भी करेगा। क्योंकि कलीसिया, जो प्रभु की देह है, वह मसीही विश्वासियों से मिलकर बनी है, इसलिए, यदि उसके सदस्य व्यक्तिगत रीति से उन्नति करते जा रहे हैं, तो फिर स्वतः ही कलीसिया भी उन्नति करती जाएगी। और यदि सदस्य एक-दूसरे की सहायता करते रहते हैं तथा औरों की भलाई में लगे रहते हैं, तो इस परस्पर सहयोग और सहायता के द्वारा कलीसिया भी बढ़ती और दृढ़ होती चली जाएगी। आज हम पद 23 में कही गई ‘उन्नति’ के बारे में देखेंगे, और यह भी कि मसीही विश्वासी की उन्नति कैसे हो सकती है।

 

मूल यूनानी भाषा के जिस शब्द का हिन्दी अनुवाद ‘उन्नति’ किया गया है, उसका शब्दार्थ होता है “घर का बनाने वाला”, अर्थात, वह जो निर्माण करता या बनाता है। इससे यह प्रकट है कि हमारी उन्नति क्रमशः एक के बाद दूसरे कदम के द्वारा होते जाने वाला काम है, उन्नति का हर स्तर या चरण पहले वाले स्तर या चरण पर बनता है। साथ ही इसमें धैर्य और निरंतर परिश्रम की आवश्यकता होती है; सारा काम एक ही बार में, एक साथ ही नहीं हो सकता है। इसी बात को वचन में अन्य स्थानों पर भी कुछ भिन्न शब्दों में कहा गया है। यह 1 कुरिन्थियों 3:1-2 में निहित है, जहाँ मसीही विश्वासियों से यह आशा की जाती है कि वे आत्मिक रीति से उन्नति करते जाएंगे, और इसका प्रमाण होगा कि उनमें से बच्चों का सा व्यवहार जाता रहेगा; इसे 2 कुरिन्थियों 3:18 में मसीही विश्वासी के अंश-अंश करके प्रभु के स्वरूप में बदलते जाने के द्वारा व्यक्त किया गया है; और इब्रानियों 5:12 में इसे इस आशा के रूप में लिखा गया है कि विश्वासी को परिपक्व होकर औरों को सिखाने वाला हो जाना चाहिए।

 

इस प्रकार से, परमेश्वर का वचन इस बात पर ज़ोर देता है कि मसीही विश्वासी की आत्मिक उन्नति, उसके लिए एक अनिवार्य बात है। प्रभु भोज में योग्य रीति से भाग लेने के लिए अपने आप को जाँचते समय, विश्वासियों को इस बात का भी ध्यान रखना चाहिए, और जाँचना चाहिए कि क्या वे उन्नति करते जा रहे हैं कि नहीं। उपरोक्त तीनों उदाहरण - बच्चों के से व्यवहार से निकल जाना, प्रभु की समानता में बढ़ते जाना, और परमेश्वर के वचन की समझ-बूझ रखते हुए, उसे दूसरों को भी सिखा पाने के योग्य होते जाना, विश्वासी को अपने आप को जाँचने के विषय प्रदान करती हैं। पद 23 का यह आग्रह है कि मसीही विश्वासी को उन बातों के बारे सोचना और उन्हें करना चाहिए जिनसे उन्नति हो (रोमियों 14:19; 15:2), न कि केवल कार्यविधि और वैधानिक रीति से सही होने की, यानि कि केवल रीतियों और औपचारिकताओं को पूरा करते हुए यह समझने की, कि इसके द्वारा हम प्रभु के साथ ठीक हो जाएंगे।

 

एक नया जन्म पाया हुआ मसीही विश्वासी कैसे उन्नति कर सकता है, और औरों की करवा सकता है?

• सबसे पहली और मुख्य बात है सांसारिक बातों और व्यवहार से पलट कर, एक स्वच्छ मन के साथ, परमेश्वर के वचन का अध्ययन करने और उसे अपने जीवन में लागू करने के द्वारा। प्रेरित पतरस ने लिखा, “इसलिये सब प्रकार का बैर भाव और छल और कपट और डाह और बदनामी को दूर करके नये जन्मे हुए बच्चों के समान निर्मल आत्मिक दूध की लालसा करो, ताकि उसके द्वारा उद्धार पाने के लिये बढ़ते जाओ” (1 पतरस 2:1-2)। परमेश्वर के वचन को अपना आत्मिक भोजन समझना, उसकी सुनना, और फिर जो वह कहता है उसे अपने जीवन में लागू करना; परमेश्वर के वचन का पालन करना ही विश्वासी की उन्नति की बुनियादी आवश्यकता है। 

• कलीसिया में तथा अन्य विश्वासियों के साथ प्रेम में बने रहने, व्यवहार करने के द्वारा भी विश्वासी उन्नति करता है (1 कुरिन्थियों 8:1)। और यही बात 1 कुरिन्थियों 10:24 में भी कही गई है - औरों की भलाई करो। यह प्रभु यीशु मसीह के निर्देश “और जैसा तुम चाहते हो कि लोग तुम्हारे साथ करें, तुम भी उन के साथ वैसा ही करो” (लूका 6:31) का व्यावहारिक प्रयोग है।

• न केवल वचन को सीखो, परन्तु उसे औरों को भी सिखाओ। परमेश्वर और उसके वचन के साथ बिताए गए समय में परमेश्वर जो कुछ भी हमें सिखाता है, हमें उसे औरों के साथ भी साझा करना चाहिए, न केवल उनकी उन्नति के लिए, बल्कि हमारी अपनी उन्नति के लिए भी (1 कुरिन्थियों 14:3-5; यहाँ प्रयुक्त शब्द ‘भविष्यवाणी’ के मूल यूनानी भाषा के शब्द का तात्पर्य है ‘सामने बोलना’, जो लोगों के सामने बोलने के लिए भी प्रयोग होता है, तथा आने वाले समय के बारे में बोलना के लिए भी)।

• हमारे आत्मिक वरदानों का प्रयोग कलीसिया के लाभ के लिए करने के द्वारा भी हम, तथा अन्य लोग उन्नति पाते हैं (1 कुरिन्थियों 14:12; 12:7; इफिसियों 4:11-12)।  

परमेश्वर नहीं चाहता है कि उसके लोग एक ही आत्मिक स्तर पर अटके रहें; वरन वह चाहता है कि वे स्वयं भी उन्नति करें, तथा औरों की उन्नति का भी कारण हों। मसीही विश्वासी का अपने आप को अपनी उन्नति के बारे में जाँचते हुए - कि वह उन्नति कर रहा है कि नहीं? उसके द्वारा औरों की उन्नति हो रही है कि नहीं? कहीं वह किसी की आत्मिक उन्नति में बाधा तो नहीं बन रहा है? आदि, और फिर अपने जीवन में उपयुक्त सुधार के साथ उचित रीति से प्रभु भोज में सम्मिलित होना, उसके स्वयं की, तथा कलीसिया की उन्नति लाता है। प्रभु भोज, प्रभु द्वारा आत्मिक उन्नति के लिए ठहराया गया एक तरीका है, जिसका सही उपयोग प्रत्येक मसीही विश्वासी को परिपक्व तथा प्रभु के लिए उपयोगी बनाता है।

 

अगले लेख से हम मसीही विश्वास के चौथे स्तम्भ, प्रार्थना करने के बारे में देखना आरम्भ करेंगे।

The Four Pillars of Christian Living - 3 - Breaking of Bread (33)

For Edification (2)

In the last article we have seen from 1 Corinthians 10:23-24 that the Lord God looks at the person’s heart and evaluates him according to what is in his heart, and not on external appearances, or being technically or legally correct, or being acceptable by worldly standards and ways. Another important thing mentioned at the end of verse 23 is that the Christian Believer should be looking to do things that edify. Then, Paul carries this thought forward and says in verse 24 that the Believers should always be concerned about the well-being of others, rather than their own. The implication is that a Believer, whose heart is right, besides wanting to be edified, will also do the right things for others. Since the Church, the body of Christ Jesus is made up of the Christian Believers, therefore, automatically if the members are continually being edified, the Church too will continually be edified; and if the members are helping for the well-being of others, the Church too would be growing and becoming stronger, through the help and cooperation of each other. Today we will consider about edification mentioned at the end of verse 23, and the things that edify a Christian Believer.

In the original Greek language, the word used, and translated into English as “edify”, literally means “to be a house-builder”, i.e., one who constructs or builds up. This makes it evident that our edification is a gradual process, occurring step-by-step, one stage or one level being built upon the earlier or previous ones. Also, it needs patience and perseverance; it cannot happen all at once. This is alluded to in different ways at other places too in God’s Word. In 1 Corinthians 3:1-2 it is implied in the Believers expected to grow spiritually, and make it evident by their getting rid of childish behavior; in 2 Corinthians 3:18 it is presented as the Christian Believers being gradually transformed, bit-by-bit, into the image of the Lord; in Hebrews 5:12, it has been stated as an expectation that the Believers should have matured and become teachers for others.

 

So, in multiple ways, the Word of God emphasizes the point that spiritual growth or edification is a must for the Christian Believers. While examining themselves for worthily partaking in the Holy Communion, they have to keep this in mind as well, and check if they are being edified continually. The above three examples - growing out of childish behavior, being transformed into the likeness of the Lord, and being able to understand the Word of God and teach it to others serve as points to ponder over and self-assess if the Believer is being edified. The exhortation of verse 23 is that the Believer should think about and do those things that edify him (Romans 14:19; 15:2), instead of only trying to be “lawful”, i.e., fulfilling the procedures and formalities, and then think that by doing so he will be okay with God.

How can a Born-Again Christian Believer be edified, and edify others? 

• The first and foremost is his turning away from worldly ways and behavior, then with a clean heart and mind, studying God’s Word and applying it to his life. The Apostle Peter writes, “Therefore, laying aside all malice, all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and all evil speaking, as new-born babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby” (1 Peter 2:1-2). Feeding upon the Word of God, listening to what it says, and then applying what it says to one’s life, obeying God’s Word is the basic necessity for a Believer’s edification.

• Living with love in the Church and with Believers also edifies (1 Corinthians 8:1). This what is said in 1 Corinthians 10:24 as well - care for others. When we care for others and nurture them in the Lord, we ourselves will be nurtured and be edified. This is the practical application of the Lord’s teaching, “And just as you want men to do to you, you also do to them likewise” (Luke 6:31).

• Not only learn, but also teach God’s Word to others. Whatever God gives to us in our time with Him and His Word, we should share it with others, for not only their edification, but ours as well (1 Corinthians 14:3-5; the word ‘prophesies’ used in these verses is not about foretelling the future but for speaking forth or speaking before others).

• Using our spiritual gifts for the benefit of the Church also edifies us as well as others (1 Corinthians 14:12; 12:7; Ephesians 4:11-12).

 

God does not want that His people should get stuck and stagnate at one spiritual level. Rather, He wants that they should be edified, and they should edify others as well. When a Christian Believer examines himself about his edification – Is he being edified? Are others being edified by him? Is he in anyway obstructing the edification of others? etc., and then participates worthily in the Holy Communion, he not only edifies himself, but also the Church. The Holy Communion is one of the ways given by the Lord for spiritual growth and edification, and participating in it worthily makes the Believers mature and effective for the Lord.

From the next article, we will begin to consider the fourth pillar of Christian living, i.e., praying.

प्रभु भोज के बारे में अपने इस अध्ययन में हमने देखा था कि व्यावहारिक मसीही जीवन के लिए प्रेरितों 2:42 में चार बातें दी गई हैं, आरम्भिक मसीही विश्वासी जिनका लौलीन होकर पालन किया करते थे। इससे वे अपने आत्मिक जीवनों में उन्नत हुए, हर प्रकार की परिस्थिति में वे अपने मसीही विश्वास में स्थिर और दृढ़ खड़े रह सके, और कलीसियाएं भी बढ़ती गईं। इसी कारण इन चार बातों को मसीही जीवन के स्तम्भ भी कहा जाता है। इसकी तुलना में कुरिन्थुस कि मण्डली के मसीही विश्वासी थे जिन्होंने इन चारों बातों का लौलीन होकर पालन नहीं किया, वरन उन्हें एक औपचारिकता बना लिया, रीति के समान उनका पालन करने लगे, और उनमें अपने ही मन के अनुसार बातों का जोड़-तोड़ कर लिया। परिणामस्वरूप उनके आत्मिक जीवन बहुत गिर गए, और वे अपने मसीही विश्वास में स्थिर और दृढ़ होकर खड़े नहीं रह सके। इन चार में से तीसरी बात, प्रभु भोज के बारे में हमने नए नियम से सुसमाचारों में से प्रभु यीशु के द्वारा प्रभु भोज की स्थापना के बारे में देखा था कि प्रभु भोज का सही स्वरूप “एक ही रोटी और एक ही प्याला” है, और इसके अभिप्रायों के बारे में भी हम देख चुके हैं। इसके बाद हमने प्रभु की मेज़ के बारे में गलतफहमियों और उसमें गलत रीति से भाग लेने, और मेज़ के दुरुपयोग के बारे में 1 कुरिन्थियों 11:17-34 देखा, और प्रभु भोज से संबंधित कुछ अन्य महत्वपूर्ण बातों के बारे में 1 कुरिन्थियों 10:16-22 से देखा। पिछले लेख में हमने 1 कुरिन्थियों 10:22 से इन बातों के निष्कर्ष के बारे में देखा। इस लेख में, हम प्रभु भोज से संबंधित एक और विषय के बारे में देखेंगे, जिसे पवित्र आत्मा ने पौलुस के द्वारा 1 कुरिन्थियों 10:23-24 में उठाया है।

यद्यपि यह विषय प्रभु की मेज़ के संदर्भ में तो कहा गया है, किन्तु यह मसीही विश्वास और जीवन से संबंधित अनेकों अन्य बातों पर भी उतना ही लागू होता है। इसके बारे में जानकारी रखना मसीही विश्वासियों के लिए बहुत सहायक होगा, विशेषकर उन जटिल परिस्थितियों में जिनका सामना उन्हें अपने विश्वास की यात्रा के दौरान करना पड़ेगा; इसलिए उन्हें इसके बारे में जानना चाहिए, और समय तथा आवश्यकता के अनुसार इसका उपयोग करते रहना चाहिए। 1 कुरिन्थियों 10:23 में लिखा है, “सब वस्तुएं मेरे लिये उचित तो हैं, परन्तु सब लाभ की नहीं: सब वस्तुएं मेरे लिये उचित तो हैं, परन्तु सब वस्तुओं से उन्नति नहीं।” जैसा कि इस पद के लेख से प्रकट है, बहुधा ऐसी परिस्थितियाँ होंगी जिनमें व्यक्ति कार्यविधि और वैधानिक दृष्टिकोण से तो सही होगा, किन्तु नैतिक तथा आत्मिक रीति से गलत और परमेश्वर को अस्वीकार्य होगा। इस बात को समझने के लिए हमें यह समझना और ध्यान रखना अनिवार्य है कि परमेश्वर केवल बाहरी स्वरूप और कार्य को नहीं देखता है, वरन व्यक्ति के मन को, उसके हृदय को देखता है (1 शमूएल 16:7; यिर्मयाह 11:20; 20:12) और उसके मन की बातों के अनुसार उसका आँकलन करता है। इसीलिए दाऊद ने अपने पुत्र सुलैमान को, उसे उत्तरदायित्व देते समय चिताया था, “और हे मेरे पुत्र सुलैमान! तू अपने पिता के परमेश्वर का ज्ञान रख, और खरे मन और प्रसन्न जीव से उसकी सेवा करता रह; क्योंकि यहोवा मन को जांचता और विचार में जो कुछ उत्पन्न होता है उसे समझता है। यदि तू उसकी खोज में रहे, तो वह तुझ को मिलेगा; परन्तु यदि तू उसको त्याग दे तो वह सदा के लिये तुझ को छोड़ देगा” (1 इतिहास 28:9)।

इसका एक बहुत अच्छा उदाहरण है दाऊद द्वारा योआब को साथ लेकर बतशेबा के पति ऊरिय्याह को मरवाने का षड्यंत्र रचना, क्योंकि वह उसके द्वारा गर्भवती थी (2 शमूएल 11:14-17)। कार्यविधि तथा वैधानिक रीति से, राजा और सेना का प्रधान सेनापति होने के नाते यह दाऊद का अधिकार था कि वह किसी भी सैनिक को कहीं पर भी नियुक्त करे, और योआब पर भी यह बाध्य था कि वह राजा की आज्ञा का पालन करे। लेकिन वास्तविक बात और दाऊद के मन में छुपी हुई बात तो अपने पाप को ऊरिय्याह तथा लोगों से छुपाने के लिए, ऊरिय्याह को मरवा देना था। योआब भी दाऊद की इस कुटिल और दुष्ट योजना को कार्यान्वित करने के लिए सहमत हो गया, और इस प्रकार दाऊद के पाप का भागी हो गया। बाद में जब परमेश्वर ने अपने नबी नातान के द्वारा दाऊद का इस बात के लिए सामना किया, तब दाऊद ने जो किया था उसे ऊरिय्याह की हत्या करना कहा (2 शमूएल 12:7-12)। दाऊद ने अपने किए को उचित दिखाने के लिए जो पर्दा बनाया था, वह उसके पीछे छुप नहीं सका, अपने आप को अपने पापों के दुष्परिणामों से बचा नहीं सका, यद्यपि उसने जो किया, वह राजा होने के नाते उसके अधिकारों के अन्तर्गत था। परमेश्वर ने उसका न्याय केवल उसके मन की दशा के अनुसार किया; उसके अनुसार नहीं, जैसा उसने बाहरी रीति से दिखाया था।

 

हम जिन पदों पर विचार कर रहे हैं, 1 कुरिन्थियों 10:23-24, वे हमें सिखाते हैं कि हमारा ध्यान अपनी प्रत्येक स्थिति का आँकलन करके उसके प्रत्युत्तर को, प्राथमिक रीति से, प्रत्युत्तर के द्वारा ‘उन्नति’ होने के आधार पर देने का होना चाहिए। हम जो भी कहने या करने का विचार कर रहे हैं, क्या उससे हमारी तथा कलीसिया की उन्नति होती है कि नहीं। यदि उन्नति नहीं होती है, तो चाहे वह व्यवहारिक एवं वैधानिक रीति से सही और उचित भी हो, और संसार के माप-दण्डों के अनुसार स्वीकार्य भी हो, लेकिन फिर भी वह मसीही विश्वासी के लिए अनुचित और अस्वीकार्य है। पौलुस अगले ही पद में इस बात की पुष्टि करते हुए कहता है, “कोई अपनी ही भलाई को न ढूंढे, वरन औरों की” (1 कुरिन्थियों 10:24)। इसी बात को पौलुस और अधिक विस्तार से प्रभु यीशु मसीह के जीवन के उदाहरण के द्वारा फिलिप्पियों 2:1-11 में समझाता है। जो लोग प्रभु की मेज़ में भाग लेते हैं, जब वे योग्य रीति से भाग लेने के लिए अपने आप को जाँच रहे होते हैं, तब उन्हें इस बात का भी ध्यान रखना चाहिए कि क्या उनके जीवनों से कलीसिया की उन्नति होती है, और वे स्वयं भी उन्नति करते हैं कि नहीं। अगले लेख में हम उन्नति करने के बारे में विचार करेंगे।

  

यदि आपने प्रभु की शिष्यता को अभी तक स्वीकार नहीं किया है, तो अपने अनन्त जीवन और स्वर्गीय आशीषों को सुनिश्चित करने के लिए अभी प्रभु यीशु के पक्ष में अपना निर्णय कर लीजिए। जहाँ प्रभु की आज्ञाकारिता है, उसके वचन की बातों का आदर और पालन है, वहाँ प्रभु की आशीष और सुरक्षा भी है। प्रभु यीशु से अपने पापों के लिए क्षमा माँगकर, स्वेच्छा से तथा सच्चे मन से अपने आप को उसकी अधीनता में समर्पित कर दीजिए - उद्धार और स्वर्गीय जीवन का यही एकमात्र मार्ग है। आपको स्वेच्छा और सच्चे मन से प्रभु यीशु मसीह से केवल एक छोटी प्रार्थना करनी है, और साथ ही अपना जीवन उसे पूर्णतः समर्पित करना है। आप यह प्रार्थना और समर्पण कुछ इस प्रकार से भी कर सकते हैं, “प्रभु यीशु, मैं अपने पापों के लिए पश्चातापी हूँ, उनके लिए आप से क्षमा माँगता हूँ। मैं आपका धन्यवाद करता हूँ कि आपने मेरे पापों की क्षमा और समाधान के लिए उन पापों को अपने ऊपर लिया, उनके कारण मेरे स्थान पर क्रूस की मृत्यु सही, गाड़े गए, और मेरे उद्धार के लिए आप तीसरे दिन जी भी उठे, और आज जीवित प्रभु परमेश्वर हैं। कृपया मुझे और मेरे पापों को क्षमा करें, मुझे अपनी शरण में लें, और मुझे अपना शिष्य बना लें। मैं अपना जीवन आप के हाथों में समर्पित करता हूँ।” सच्चे और समर्पित मन से की गई आपकी एक प्रार्थना आपके वर्तमान तथा भविष्य को, इस लोक के और परलोक के जीवन को, अनन्तकाल के लिए स्वर्गीय एवं आशीषित बना देगी।

The Four Pillars of Christian Living - 3 - Breaking of Bread (32)

For Edification (1)

In our study about the Holy Communion or the Lord’s Table we have seen that in Acts 2:42 four things related to practical Christian living have been given, and the initial Christian Believers used to steadfastly follow them. Because of this they were edified in their spiritual lives, stood steady and firm in their Christian faith despite all kinds of circumstances, and the churches also continued to grow. That is why these four are also known as the four “Pillars of Christian Living.” In contrast, were the Christian Believers of Corinth, who did not follow these four things steadfastly; but turned them into a formality, a ritual, and manipulated them, added and took away things from them according to their own fancy. Consequently, their spiritual lives fell down greatly, they could not stand firm in their Christian faith. The third of these four things is participating in the Lord’s Table or the Holy Communion. We had seen that the correct form of the Holy Communion, as established by the Lord Jesus at the time of instituting the Holy Communion was of “one bread and one cup” for everyone; and we have seen the implications of this also. We then studied about the misunderstandings and misuse of the Table, and the correct manner of participating in it from 1 Corinthians 11:17-34, and some other issues related to participation on the Holy Communion from 1 Corinthians 10:16-22. In the last article we have seen the conclusion from 1 Corinthians 10:22. In this article on this study about the Holy Communion, we will see one more point that the Holy Spirit raises through Paul, stated in 1 Corinthians 10:23-24.

 

Although this point is in context of the Lord’s Table, but is also equally applicable to many other issues related to Christian Faith and living. Knowing about it will help the Christian Believers in many perplexing situations that they will face in their journey of faith; so they should remain aware of it, and use it. It is written in 1 Corinthians 10:23, “All things are lawful for me, but not all things are helpful; all things are lawful for me, but not all things edify.” As is evident from the text of the verse, there will often be situations where one can be technically and legally correct, but still be morally and ethically wrong or unacceptable to the Lord. To understand this point, we need to remember that God does not look at the externals, but at the heart (1 Samuel 16:7; Jeremiah 11:20; 20:12), and judges a person according to what is in his heart. Therefore, David cautioned his son Solomon, as he was handing over the charge to him, “As for you, my son Solomon, know the God of your father, and serve Him with a loyal heart and with a willing mind; for the Lord searches all hearts and understands all the intent of the thoughts. If you seek Him, He will be found by you; but if you forsake Him, He will cast you off forever” (1 Chronicles 28:9). So, while a person may be technically and legally right, he can be morally and ethically totally wrong.

A very good illustration of this is David’s plotting with Joab, of the killing of Uriah, the husband of Bathsheba, since she was pregnant with David’s child (2 Samuel 11:14-17). Technically and legally, as the King and Commander-in-Chief of his troops, David had the right to station any soldier anywhere, and Joab too had to comply with the king’s orders. But the actual situation and the thing in David’s heart was to have Uriah eliminated, to hide his own sin from Uriah and the people. Joab agreed to carry out David’s wicked plan, and thus became a party to David’s sin. Later when God confronts David through His prophet Nathan, Nathan, on God’s behalf, calls what David had done as murdering Uriah (2 Samuel 12:7-12). David could not hide behind the deception he had created, and could not absolve himself from the consequences of his sins, though he was well within his rights as King. God judged him only by what was in his heart and not by what he presented on the outside.

  Of the verses we are considering, 1 Corinthians 10:23, teach us that our primary concern should be to assess every situation and our response to it on the criteria of edification. Whatever we think of doing, does it edify us and the Church or not? If it does not edify, then even if it is technically and legally correct and acceptable by the standards of the world, yet it is unacceptable for a Christian Believer. Paul affirms it in the very next verse, “Let no one seek his own, but each one the other's well-being” (1 Corinthians 10:24). Paul explains this thought in some more detail in Philippians 2:1-11, using the Lord Jesus as the role model and example. Those who participate in the Lord’s Table, when examining themselves to partake in a worthy manner, should make sure that their lives have served to edify the Church, and they themselves are edified as well. In the next article we will look into some more detail about this edification.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Repenting of your sins, and asking the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely, surrendering yourself to Him - is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. You only have to say a short but sincere prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ willingly and with a penitent heart, and at the same time completely commit and submit your life to Him. You can also make this prayer and submission in words something like, “Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sins and repent of them. I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself, paying for them through your life.  Because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, and you rose again from the grave on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God and have freely provided to me the forgiveness, and redemption from my sins, through faith in you. Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.
