Things Related to Christian Living – 72

The Four Pillars of Christian Living - 4 - Prayer (14)

Prayer, the topic we are presently considering, is the fourth of the four things given in Acts 2:42, regarding practical Christian living. In the preceding articles we have seen what prayer actually is, and have considered and learnt the truth from God’s Word about the many wrong concepts and wrong teachings that are commonly preached and taught about prayer. In the current articles we are considering this very commonly given but wrong teaching about prayer that God has promised to answer in affirmative, the prayers made to Him “in faith.” We have seen from God’s Word about whose prayers, and what kind of prayers God has assured to answer in the affirmative. Now, we are considering some examples from the Bible that are commonly taken out of context, misinterpreted, and used to assert the claim that God has assured to fulfill all prayers made to Him “in faith.” In the previous article we had begun to consider another related aspect, that God fulfills everyone’s, and all prayers asked “in the name of Jesus.” We had seen why this claim is false and inconsistent with the Word of God, because the Lord had made this promise not to everyone, but only to His true, committed, and surrendered disciples. Today we will carry on in considering this phrase, and see the meaning with which the Lord gave this promise to His disciples, and what is the meaning and implications of using this phrase in prayer.

This is a common experience, that if a beggar comes begging, and if he sees a child with, or, in the lap of the person he is begging from, then he usually makes his plea for alms by asking to give something in the name of that child to them. What he means to say is that just as the person with the child, fulfills the wishes of the child, knowing that the child is dependent on him, brings and gives things to the child, similarly to fulfill the wish of the beggar, consider the beggar to be dependent on the person, and make provisions for him as well. In other words, just as the child belongs to the person and he does things for the child, to similarly consider the beggar also to belong to him and fulfill his wishes.

The same thing, and with the same intention is present in asking God “in the name of Lord Jesus.” The Lord Jesus, in repeating this phrase often in John chapters 14 to 16, taught His true and committed disciples that they should learn to ask from God with the meaning, that just as God the Father always answers all prayers made by the Lord Jesus affirmatively, similarly He should answer the prayers made by the true and committed disciples of the Lord also. This brings before us an implication of using this phrase, that the Lord Jesus has given this promise only for those who have a Father and child relationship with God, just as the Lord Jesus had. In other words, only for those who are a part of God’s family, and as we have seen in the earlier articles, this is only possible on the basis of John 1:12-13. Or, is only possible for those who are the truly Born-Again Believers. Therefore, we come back to the same point, that to ask something from God in the name of the Lord Jesus is only possible for those who are the true and committed disciples of the Lord, are the children of God; and not for anyone who adds this phrase to any prayer he makes to God.

Why is it that Father God would answer all of Lord’s Jesus’ prayers? The Lord Jesus has Himself answered this question. The Lord’s answer is given in His conversation with the Jews in John chapter 5, from verse 17 onwards. We will not look up this whole section, but will consider only three verses:

  • John 5:19 “Then Jesus answered and said to them, "Most assuredly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do; for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner.” The Lord did only that which God the Father did, and did it in the same manner as God the Father did. This is a picture of complete obedience and emulating God in a truly submissive and committed manner.

  • John 5:30 “I can of Myself do nothing. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is righteous, because I do not seek My own will but the will of the Father who sent Me.” Although God has given all authority, all responsibility regarding judgment to the Lord Jesus, but the Lord Jesus, judged only according to the example set by God the Father, not any other way. The second thing that the Lord Jesus says over here is that He fulfills God’s will. Everything that the Lord did was based on this, as He had said when coming from heaven to earth, as is recorded in Hebrews 10:5-7.

  • John 5:36 “But I have a greater witness than John's; for the works which the Father has given Me to finish--the very works that I do--bear witness of Me, that the Father has sent Me.” We see another aspect of the works of the Lord Jesus - He did only those works that God had entrusted Him to do, not the works that He decided for Himself. Before being caught, He had said in His prayer to the Father, “I have glorified You on the earth. I have finished the work which You have given Me to do” (John 17:4).

From these verses we see that although the Lord Jesus was one of the Triune Godhead, was fully God, but now, when He had come to earth in the human form to fulfill God’s will, then he had fully surrendered Himself to God the Father, for all things. And for this reason, God the Father answered all His prayers to Him affirmatively. In an earlier article on this topic, we had seen from Matthew 10:24-25, a characteristic of a disciple of the Lord, that the disciples of the Lord are to be like the Lord. When the disciples of the Lord Jesus, start following the characteristics that the Lord Jesus has shown through His life, become submitted and obedient to God the Father as the Lord Jesus was, then they too will know and understand the will of God the Father, as the Lord Jesus did; and then, their prayer would also be in accordance with the will of God. And we have seen earlier, that those who are surrendered to God, those whose prayers are in accordance with the will of God, God fulfills those prayers. Therefore, inherent in using the phrase “ask in the name of the Lord Jesus” is the understanding that the one who is making this prayer, is a member of God’s family, just as the Lord Jesus was; and he is fully committed and surrendered to God the Father, knows God’s Word and will, and asks from God in accordance with God’s Word and will. Therefore, it is only natural that God the Father will answer and fulfill his prayers.

Therefore, the phrase “ask in the name of the Lord Jesus” is not a ‘mantra’ or a chant, or a phrase with some special powers that will compel God to answer all prayers that anyone may make in the affirmative. Rather, it is a way of saying that the one praying to God the Father, like the Lord Jesus is fully committed and surrendered to Him, knows God’s Word and His will, and that which he is asking, is in accordance with the Word and will of God. If all of these are true, then, no doubt the prayers of all such people will surely be fulfilled. From the next article, we will consider some related things given in John chapter 15.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Repenting of your sins, and asking the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely, surrendering yourself to Him - is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. You only have to say a short but sincere prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ willingly and with a penitent heart, and at the same time completely commit and submit your life to Him. You can also make this prayer and submission in words something like, “Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sins and repent of them. I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself, paying for them through your life.  Because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, and you rose again from the grave on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God and have freely provided to me the forgiveness, and redemption from my sins, through faith in you. Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.

Things Related to Christian Living – 71

The Four Pillars of Christian Living - 4 - Prayer (13)

Prayer is an integral part of practical Christian living, and is the fourth of the four things given in Acts 2:42. The initial Christian Believers used to follow these four things steadfastly. The form and the observance of these four things of Acts 2:42 that was seen and practiced amongst the initial Believers and the churches is very rarely seen now. Instead, it has been replaced by man-made traditions and rituals about these four, and these too are only followed to fulfill a formality. That steadfast observance that was seen amongst the initial Christian Believers and the churches, is practically never seen now. While learning about prayer from God’s Word, we have seen that praying is not just asking from God, but continually being in conversation with Him about everything. It is learning God’s will, and what God’s Word says about everything, then following God’s instructions accordingly. God has very clearly written in His Word about whose prayers and the kind of prayers He will answer affirmatively - those asked by His true and committed disciples, and consistent with His Word and His will. We have also seen that God has not given an open assurance to everyone that if anyone asks for anything “in faith” then God is obliged to necessarily fulfill it. Having seen and understood the things related to this very common but wrong notion, since the last article we have started to consider the examples that are often used from the Bible to support this misconception, through wrong interpretations and meanings of the text, and then these Biblically inconsistent teachings are preached and taught to others. Having seen and understood about Matthew 7:7-8 and Matthew 21:21-22, today we will begin to consider another Biblical example that is misused to say that God will accept and fulfill any prayer for anything, if asked in the name of the Lord Jesus.

The phrase “ask in Jesus’s name” is used by practically everyone in their prayers, to ensure its being fulfilled. Today, it has become more of a formality, an indicator that this is the concluding sentence of the prayer, with which the prayer will come to an end. When seen from the Bible, as given in John 14:13, 14; 15:16; 16:23-26, this phrase was spoken by the Lord Jesus to those of His committed and true disciples, with whom He had partaken the Passover feast, and with whom He had established the Lord’s Table. There is a very important thing to be noted over here. As we have seen while considering about the things related to the Holy Communion, from the end of John chapter 13, till Jesus’ being caught for being crucified in John chapter 18, Judas Iscariot was not present amongst them. Therefore, the things said and the assurances given by the Lord Jesus, in John chapters 14 to 16 were spoken to, and were meant only for His true and committed disciples. They were neither said to everyone, in general; nor were they meant for everyone, in general to claim and ask. Therefore, there is no rationale for everyone to be generally claiming the phrase “ask in Jesus’ name” repeatedly spoken by the Lord in John chapters 14 to 16, and expecting their prayers to be answered because of having said the phrase.

That which the Lord has not spoken to or for everyone, He will not fulfill it for everyone either. As has been said above, the Lord had given this promise after Judas Iscariot had left from amongst them. Judas Iscariot had been with them for about three and a half years. He had seen, learnt, known, and done everything like the other disciples. Still, the lust for money eventually led him into eternal destruction. Judas Iscariot was the “treasurer” amongst the disciples, and from the responsibility entrusted to him, he used to steal money. When Mary had poured the precious ointment on Jesus’ feet and had wiped them with her hair, it was Judas Isacriot who had been perturbed the most by this “waste of money” and had suggested that it could have been better used for “giving to the poor” (John 12:1-6). Now take note, when this apparently and superficially joined to the Lord, but inwardly joined to the world and the things of the world, “disciple” was with them for about three and a half years, the Lord never gave this teaching to His disciples to ask for things in His name. Not even when the disciples asked the Lord to teach them to pray, and He taught them the “Lord’s Prayer.” When this outwardly, a “disciple” of the Lord, but actually Satan’s person (John 17:12), eventually had fully separated himself from them and had gone back into the world and joined the people of the world, it was then that the Lord Jesus gave the disciples this promise, this assurance. This by itself clearly shows that the authority to ask in the name of the Lord, and to expect the fulfillment of what is asked, is only for the actual disciples of the Lord, truly committed and surrendered to Him; and not for anyone in general. Therefore, even if people may keep adding this phrase “ask in Jesus’ name” to their prayers, it will benefit only those who really are the disciples of the Lord, from the inside as well as outside, and are truly committed and surrendered to Him.

There is another very important meaning of this phrase “ask in Jesus’ name,” that explains to us with what meaning did the Lord give this promise, and what is its actual meaning and implication. We will see this in the next article.

Things Related to Christian Living – 70

The Four Pillars of Christian Living - 4 - Prayer (12)

There are four things given in Acts 2:42 related to practical Christian living, and having seen the first three, we are now considering the fourth one, prayer. We have seen that to pray is not merely asking for something from God or asking Him to do something. Rather, to pray is to converse with God, to share what is on our hearts with Him, and listen to what He has to say and then to obey it. To keep us safe from the schemes and ploys of Satan, God in His Word the Bible has given instructions that His people should continually keep praying, i.e., conversing with Him. for the past few articles, we have been considering from the Bible a very common, but false notion, that God has promised to answer every prayer made to Him “in faith.” We have seen a few aspects about this, that it is a wrong notion, the people and the kind of prayers God has promised to answer, and what it means to ask “in faith.” From today we will start considering the Biblical examples that are preached and taught, with an incomplete understanding and misinterpretations, to claim that God fulfills all prayers made to Him “in faith.”

Before we begin to see and analyze those examples, it is essential for us to revise and remind ourselves that the most common cause of misinterpreting and having wrong notions about Biblical things is taking a phrase, or sentence, or verse, or passage out of its context, and then based solely on that to build a notion and start teaching it. God has written in 1 Thessalonians 5:21 “Test all things; hold fast what is good.” In other words, it is God’s instruction that before accepting and following any teachings, as the Berean Believers did (Acts 17:11) check them out using God’s Word. Because of not obeying this instruction, Satan has an easy way to push in many wrong teachings into the churches. Another very important thing to keep in mind is that God never goes outside of what He has written in His Word, never makes any exceptions to it. He will never do anything different or other than what He has written. Therefore, only those prayers of God’s actual Believers and truly submitted disciples are fulfilled, which are in accordance with God’s Word, His attributes, and His will. In the previous articles we have seen another related thing that the assurance for affirmative answers has been made by the Lord only to His actual and truly committed disciples, not to everyone, in general. In this context we have seen that the thinking and view-points of the disciples of the Lord are like the Lord’s, and they exhibit the signs of being a disciple. Therefore, to preach and teach that these assurances of the Lord are applicable for everyone is to misinterpret and give wrong teachings. Keeping these main things in mind, we will now begin considering the related examples from the Bible.

Matthew 7:7-8 “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.” and Matthew 21:21-22 “So Jesus answered and said to them, "Assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith and do not doubt, you will not only do what was done to the fig tree, but also if you say to this mountain, 'Be removed and be cast into the sea,' it will be done. And whatever things you ask in prayer, believing, you will receive."” Both passages are statements made by the Lord to His disciples, and not to everyone in general. Matthew chapters 5 to 7 is the Sermon on the Mount given by the Lord. At the beginning of this sermon, it is written in Matthew 5:1 “And seeing the multitudes, He went up on a mountain, and when He was seated His disciples came to Him.” In other words, all that is written after this was spoken by the Lord to His disciples, having separated them from the crowd of people. And we have considered the importance of this above. Although, by the time the Lord concluded His sermon, a crowd had gathered there (Matthew 7:28), but neither during the sermon, nor on completing it did the Lord say that what He said is also for the crowd that has heard them. Similarly, the promise of Matthew 21:21-22 was also given by the Lord to His disciples, who were amazed on seeing that the fig tree had dried up (Matthew 21:20). We have seen above that in the actual Believers and the truly committed disciples of the Lord, there are some attributes that make them different from the world and the people of the world. Moreover, when we see in the Bible the lives, works, prayers, etc., of God’s people, His Prophets, Apostles, Ministers, etc., then it is evident that although God had given them the gifts of doing miracles and powerful things, yet none of them ever used this God given power selfishly, nor asked or did anything that was outside of God’s will, attributes, and His Word. In other words, although the Lord had given the disciples the power to uproot the mountain and throw it into the sea, none of the disciples did anything like this. Whatever they did was always in accordance with the will and Word of God. Therefore, to interpret these two passages and teach from them that the Lord God has given an open invitation to everyone that whatever they ask in faith, He will fulfill, is wrong; it is not consistent with the context of these passages, their related things, and other related examples of the Bible.

In the next article we will consider some other examples.

The Four Pillars of Christian Living - 4 - Prayer (11)

For practical Christian living, four things have been given in Acts 2:42, the fourth of these is praying - the subject of our current study. We have seen in the previous articles that to pray is not just asking God for things or to do something. Rather, it is conversing with Him, sharing with Him, and listening to what He has to say. It is God’s instruction that His people should always be praying to Him, i.e., be conversing with Him about everything, so that they remain safe from being misled by Satan and committing sin. A very common and popular wrong concept and teaching about prayer is that God has promised to give a positive response to every prayer made to Him “in faith.” For the past few articles, we have been learning about this from God’s Word the Bible. We have been seeing about whose and what kind of prayers God has promised to answer positively. From this we have seen that contrary to the popular but incorrect notion, God has not made any universal promise that if anyone asks for something “in faith,” then God will be under compulsion to answer the prayer just as asked for. In the previous article we had understood that to ask “in faith” means to know God’s Word and will, and ask in accordance with what is written in God’s Word, and that which is consistent with His will. Any prayer that is not in accordance with what is written in God’s Word or His will, God will never give a positive response to it; no matter in however much faith and desire they may have been asked with. Today we will carry on with this topic, and will also see something about not receiving answers to prayers.

There is another aspect to “asking in faith.”  We have seen in the earlier articles that there is nothing hidden from God. He is the all-knowing God who knows everything within us. Therefore, our claiming before Him that we are asking in faith or in true faith, cannot impress Him, since He well knows what is in our hearts, what we really are. He knows why, and for what purpose we have asked for a thing. He also knows what all we have tried to do, before coming to Him to get the solution to our need or problem. God also knows the alternatives we have planned or kept ready in case our praying to Him does not work according to our expectations. All these things spoken of and done as possible alternatives, by those who claim to ask in faith, are not indicators of the steadfastness of faith but of its being hollow, and of the lack of faith. Consider the prayers of the people of God, His prophets, His Apostles, His followers, given in the Bible; did any of them ever have to use this phrase of “asking in faith” for God to act on their behalf? God’s people know that God knows everything about them and their needs, and makes the necessary provisions. There is no need for them to impress God or compel Him in any way. We should learn from the prayers of God’s people, and pray like they did.

There is another related matter, that if our faith in God is sincere and steadfast, then we will not go to Him for having our needs met or for the solution to our problems, after we have exhausted everything that we could do on our own. Rather, we will go to Him, before going anywhere else or doing anything else; knowing that He not only knows about all our needs and everything about our problem, but that He already has the solution to everything. Therefore, there is no need for us to go anywhere for anything. Secondly, those who claim to ask “in faith” should also keep in mind that if God is not granting something according to our will, then He is doing it for our benefit. Therefore, those who claim to ask “in faith” should be willing to accept the possibility of some loss due to an unanswered prayer, instead of being the ones who overlook God’s will to have their own wills fulfilled. And thirdly, whether God listens to our prayers or not, whether or not He answers them as per our desires, those claiming to pray and ask “in faith” should not have any other alternatives worked out and kept ready, in case God does not answer and give what they want. Because keeping an alternative ready, shows that the faith is not sincere. If our “asking in faith” is according to these things, then it genuinely is “asking in faith;” else it is nothing more than empty and meaningless words. And God cannot be impressed by such vain words, nor does He answer them.

In James 4:1-4, God has given another reason for unanswered prayers - asking with wrong desires, lust, and for inappropriate physical pleasures; living not as people of God but as people of the world, as those who are enemies of God. Take note, this once again draws our attention to what was said at the beginning of this topic, about the kind of people whose prayers God answers, and the kind of prayers that He answers. The people who do not truly love God and are not actually committed to Him, are not obedient to Him, those whose prayer requests are not for glorifying God, but only for physical gratification, lusts, and the things of this world, on what basis should they expect God to answer their prayers? Their selfish prayers, their prayers about physical lusts, covetousness, mutual enmity etc. will never be answered, no matter how intense their claim of “asking in faith” may be, and how many times they have asked them.

From the next article we start considering the examples that are used with an incomplete understanding and wrong interpretation, to preach and teach this wrong notion that the Lord will answer all prayers made in His name or “in faith” in the affirmative.
