Users of the Gifts of the Holy Spirit - Administrations

The Holy Spirit has given a list of the Spiritual gifts in 1 Corinthians 12:28 that have been given to the Christian Believers, to enable them to fulfill their ministries and carry out their work worthily in the Church. We have been considering the various Spiritual gifts given in this list according to their utilization in their Churches in the previous articles. We have already seen about the last gift of this list, i.e., about tongues, in the beginning, since there are many misinterpretations and misunderstandings about it amongst the Christians, and false teachings about this gift are always being spread. Today we will consider the remaining gift of this list - the gift of “Administrations” and see what God’s Word the Bible has to say about it.

The word in the original Greek language translated as “administrations”, means one who like the captain of a ship “keeps control, manages, and gives the direction” of the ship. Various translations of the Bible express this ministry through different translations; although the most commonly used translation of this word is “administrations”, the other words used are, Managing, Directions, Governing, Guiding, Leadership, Ministrations, etc. This is an interesting but important fact that in nearly all the English translations of the Bible, the word used is in plural, i.e., this ministry involves fulfilling of various responsibilities together, by one person, or more than one person working together to carry out these responsibilities. The meaning of this word is to take care, manage, guide, conduct, and take responsibility for the Assembly and fulfill that responsibility. In the Christian Assemblies some other words have also been used to express the carrying out of these responsibilities of the Church, e.g., “Elders” (1 Timothy 5:17), “Pastors” (Ephesians 4:11), “Ministers” (1 Corinthians 3:5), “Bishop” (1 Timothy 3:1, 2), etc. It is very important to take note and understand that all of these words, and the word “Administrations” used in 1 Corinthians 12:28, are not meant to convey holding a title or a position of authority and control over the other members of the Church, but as a helper and minister, to serve and help others in the Church, to see that no one in the Church is neglected in any manner, everyone gets proper opportunities and helps, to grow spiritually. We should also understand that here in 1 Corinthians 12:28, the word “Administrations” shows the collective responsibilities, whereas through other words used in the other letters, the various people who work together to collectively carry out this function have been mentioned.

There is another similarly important and interesting fact about the people given this gift in God’s Word - they have always been mentioned in plural form, even though it may be one Church that is being addressed. The implication is that in the New Testament Churches, according to the instructions given by God the Holy Spirit the conduct, managing, and taking care of the Churches was never the responsibility of one single person, i.e., no one person was ever the one and only, the whole and sole “in-charge” of any Church. It was always a collective responsibility of different people to function together and fulfill these responsibilities in the Church. No one person was ever made the solitary in-charge of any Church, and was never meant to authoritatively control and direct the members of the Church according to his own will and understanding. Moreover, to whom this gift and responsibility was given, they were always to fulfill it in the fear of the Lord and in the understanding that they will give an account to the Lord about this, “The elders who are among you I exhort, I who am a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that will be revealed: Shepherd the flock of God which is among you, serving as overseers, not by compulsion but willingly, not for dishonest gain but eagerly; nor as being lords over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock; and when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that does not fade away” (1 Peter 5:1-4). Do take note that as the Holy Spirit had it written by Peter, God’s instruction is to carry out this ministry humbly not authoritatively, and by being examples; and no one was to use it for personal gain or benefits. Those engaged in this ministry had to carry it out to please the “Chief Shepherd”, i.e., the Lord Jesus Christ and with the realization that one day they will have to give an account of their work to the Lord. Their accountability was to the Lord Jesus and He will reward them for their work; they were not to work to appease or please any higher ranking official, nor to seek their favor or honor and commendation from them.

We also see that those who were given the responsibility of “Administrations” in those initial Christian Churches, were to have certain specific characteristics and attributes, only then was the managing of the Church entrusted to them. These characteristics and attributes related to their personal, family, and spiritual life (1 Timothy 3:1-10; Titus 1:5-11). There is no instruction, indication, or example of people being elected by voting for these responsibilities in the Bible; neither is any count of how many should they be in number given in the Bible, through the use of plural, it has been indicated that they should be more than one. Neither does God’s Word say that amongst persons holding these responsibilities, there should be any positional hierarchy; all had the same status. Contrary to a popular notion, there is no indication in the Bible that Peter was the first “Leader” or over-all In-Charge of the First Church, and later came to be called the “Pope”, which office was then passed on to others; nor are the other offices related to the “Pope” mentioned in the Bible.

We have examples of how these people entrusted with the gift of “Administrations” functioned in those initial Christian Churches, in Acts 6:1-6 and Acts 15. From these examples of the functioning of these people having the responsibility of “Administrations”, it is clear that they personally gave the primacy to studying God’s Word, prayers, and keeping their spiritual lives right in the sight of God, and carried out their responsibilities according to God’s instructions. Their decisions were taken after a frank and open discussion mutually, being one-minded about it. There was no feeling of being superior or inferior, ego, or jealousy towards each other. This is only possible when everyone strives to fulfill his responsibility to please the Lord, not any man; and to function according to the instructions of the Lord, in fear of Him, with the realization of eventually being accountable to Him, and maintain the primary place of God’s Word and its obedience in his life (Galatians 1:10).

If you are a Christian Believer, and God has given you some responsibility in His Church, if God wants to accomplish something through you, then it is absolutely essential for you to first learn to live your life not in fear and obedience of any man but in the fear of God, in obedience to Him, knowing you are accountable to Him, and to always keep God’s Word in mind about whatever you do. Only then will you be able to fulfill your responsibility worthily, and be able to please and glorify God through your life. But if you give priority to pleasing men, then very soon Satan will beguile you into taking decisions that will be harmful for you as well people of the Church, and others too. As he did in the Garden of Eden to have Eve commit sin, Satan always tries to mislead people into disobeying God, function according to their own thinking and understanding; he brings very tempting and seemingly very good things before men, creates a doubt about God and God’s instructions, provokes them to take their own decisions and disobey God. This is when and where the decision about our works being acceptable to God, our commitment and submission to God, the actual state of our faith, obedience, and integrity towards God and His Word is made; and this then determines our being useful for God, our receiving the eternal rewards, honor and glory from Him (John 5:41-44).

If you are still thinking of yourself as being a Christian, a child of God, entitled to a place in heaven, because of being born in a particular family and having fulfilled the religious rites and rituals prescribed under your religion or denomination since your childhood, then you too need to come out of your misunderstanding of Biblical facts and start learning, understanding, and living according to what the Word of God says, instead of what any denominational creed says or teaches. Make the necessary corrections in your life now while you have the time and opportunity; lest by the time you realize your mistake, it is too late to do anything about it.

If you are still not Born Again, have not obtained salvation, or have not asked the Lord Jesus for forgiveness for your sins, then you have the opportunity to do so right now. A short prayer said voluntarily with a sincere heart, with heartfelt repentance for your sins, and a fully submissive attitude, “Lord Jesus, I confess that I have disobeyed You, and have knowingly or unknowingly, in mind, in thought, in attitude, and in deeds, committed sins. I believe that you have fully borne the punishment of my sins by your sacrifice on the cross, and have paid the full price of those sins for all eternity. Please forgive my sins, change my heart and mind towards you, and make me your disciple, take me with you." God longs for your company and wants to see you blessed, but to make this possible, is your personal decision. Will you not say this prayer now, while you have the time and opportunity to do so - the decision is yours.
