बपतिस्मे का उद्देश्य (4) - निष्कर्ष
हमने पिछले तीन लेखों में देखा है की उसके आरंभ से ही, बपतिस्मा कभी कोई रीति अथवा औपचारिकता नहीं था; उसे कभी भी लापरवाही के साथ या हल्के में लिया और दिया नहीं जाता था, बल्कि हमेशा ही एक उद्देश्य और निष्ठा के साथ होता था। इसे हमेशा ही व्यक्ति के द्वारा पापों के अंगीकार और पश्चाताप के बाद दिया गया है; केवल प्रभु यीशु मसीह के बपतिस्मे को छोड़ कर, जो, जैसा कि प्रभु ने स्वयं ही कहा था, “सब धार्मिकता को पूरा करने”, अर्थात, परमेश्वर की आज्ञाकारिता के लिए था।
बपतिस्मे के उद्देश्यों को संक्षेप में तीन बातों, जिन्हें हम पिछले तीन लेखों में देख चुके हैं, के अंतर्गत रखा जा सकता है:
गवाही - बपतिस्मा व्यक्ति के द्वारा पापों के अंगीकार और उनके लिए पश्चाताप करने से उसके अंदर होने वाले परिवर्तन की, उसके बदले हुए जीवन की, सार्वजनिक बाहरी गवाही है।
तैयारी - बपतिस्मा लेने के द्वारा व्यक्ति संसार के सामने यह व्यक्त करता है की उसने अपने आप को प्रभु के हाथों में सौंप दिया है, और अब प्रभु उसे उस अन्ततः होने वाली अंतिम जवाबदेही तथा न्याय के लिए तैयार कर रहा है, जिसका सामना सभी को करना ही पड़ेगा, जिससे कि मसीह के अनुयायी होने के नाते उनके द्वारा किए गए और नहीं किए गए कामों के अनुसार उन्हें प्रतिफल और परिणाम दिए जाएं।
आज्ञाकारिता - बपतिस्मा लेना व्यक्ति द्वारा अपने आप को परमेश्वर के प्रति समर्पित और उसके अधीन कर देने की अभिव्यक्ति है। उस व्यक्ति की प्रतिबद्धता की, कि वह अब परमेश्वर की आज्ञाकारिता में रहेगा - जैसा की प्रभु यीशु के बपतिस्मे के द्वारा दिखाया गया। प्रभु यीशु निष्पाप था, पूर्णतः धर्मी था; उसे किसी अंगीकार अथवा पश्चाताप की कोई आवश्यकता नहीं थी; लेकिन फिर भी उसने अपने आप को परमेश्वर के नियमों के अधीन कर दिया, और हमारे सामने परमेश्वर की आज्ञाकारिता के उदाहरण को रख दिया।
इन उद्देश्यों को पहचानने और समझने का महत्व, इनका पालन करने में है। जैसा की पहले, इस शृंखला के आरंभ में कहा गया है, जैसा और बातों के साथ हुआ, बपतिस्मे को भी गिरा कर एक डिनॉमिनेशन की रीति, एक नाम-मात्र के लिए पूरी की जाने वाली औपचारिकता बना दिया गया है, जिस से जिन डिनॉमिनेशन, समूह, या समुदाय में ईसाई या मसीही समाज ने आपने आप को विभाजित कर लिया है, उन की अपनी रीतियों और नियमों को पूरा किया जा सके। इनमें से प्रत्येक डिनॉमिनेशन, समूह, या समुदाय अपनी ही रीति और तरीके के अनुसार बपतिस्मा देने और लेने में विश्वास रखता है, और इसके लिए बाध्य करता है। अपने ही बनाए और गढ़े हुए नियमों के द्वारा उन्होंने बपतिस्मे के साथ व्यक्ति के जीवन से संबंधित कई बातों को भी बांध दिया है, जिससे की बिना उनके द्वारा दिए गए बपतिस्मे के वे बातें भी न की जा सकें। यह परमेश्वर के वचन बाइबल में दी गई किसी भी शिक्षा, निर्देश, या उदाहरण के अनुरूप या अनुसार नहीं है। किन्तु उनके अपने नियमों और विधियों के प्रति उनकी आस्था और प्रतिबद्धता इतनी अधिक है, कि उन्हें पूरा कराने के लिए वे परमेश्वर के वचन की वास्तविक शिक्षाओं को कोई महत्व नहीं देते हैं, बल्कि उनकी पूर्ण अवहेलना करते हैं - और यह सब परमेश्वर के नाम में!
यह उसे परिस्थिति के समान है जो परमेश्वर के लोगों, इस्राएलियों में व्याप्त थी, उनके बुरी तरह से ताड़ना दिए जाने, बंधुवाई में भेजे जाने, तथा देशों में तित्तर-बित्तर किए जाने से पहले (यशायाह 1:4-20; यिर्मयाह 7:19; 8:5-9; 22:5-9; 26:4-6; यहेजकेल 39:23-24)। इस्राएली लोग अपनी रीतियों, त्यौहारों, और अनुष्ठानों को पूरा कर रहे थे; धार्मिक क्रियाएं की जाती थीं, किन्तु परमेश्वर उन से प्रसन्न नहीं था, क्योंकि उनके जीवन में परमेश्वर की वास्तविक भक्ति कहीं दिखाई नहीं देती थी। वे धार्मिक औपचारिकताएं तो पूरी कर रहे थे, परन्तु न तो उनके जीवन में परमेश्वर के लोग होने की गवाही थी, न वे अपने आप को परमेश्वर के सामने जवाब देने और उनका न्याय किए जाने के लिए तैयार कर रहे थे, और फिर उन में परमेश्वर के वचन की आज्ञाकारिता का स्थान मनुष्यों की आज्ञाकारिता ने ले लिया था। और जब अनेकों चेतावनियों के बावजूद, उन्होंने अपने जीवनों को सुधार कर परमेश्वर के वचन के अनुरूप नहीं किया, तब फिर परमेश्वर को उन से व्यवहार करना ही पड़ा। यही स्थिति प्रभु यीशु मसीह की पृथ्वी के सेवकाई के दिनों में भी व्याप्त थी। पुनःनिर्माण करके बनाया गया मंदिर विद्यमान था, उसमें सारी धार्मिक गतिविधियां पूरी की जाती थीं, परंतु गवाही, तैयारी, और आज्ञाकारिता के द्वारा प्रकट की जाने वाली परमेश्वर की भक्ति कहीं नहीं थी। अभी भी धार्मिक अगुवे वही करते थे, जिसके लिए उन्हें एक बार भयानक ताड़ना सहनी पड़ी थी - अपनी ही बातों को ‘परमेश्वर का वचन’ कहकर सिखाते और पालन करवाते थे (मत्ती 15:3-9 )। वास्तविक दशा इतनी घृणास्पद हो गई थी की प्रभु यीशु को मंदिर को ‘डाकुओं की खोह’ कहना पड़ा (मत्ती 21:13)। और अन्ततः, उसी ‘खोह’ के ‘डाकुओं’ ने परमेश्वर के पुत्र को पकड़वा कर मरवा डाल, क्योंकि वह उनके विरुद्ध बोला था, उनकी वास्तविकता को सब के सामने खोल देता था। लेकिन जैसा की प्रभु ने भविष्यवाणी की थी (मत्ती 24:1-2), उनकी इस ढिठाई के कारण, थोड़े वर्षों में ही, मंदिर पूरी तरह से ध्वस्त कर दिया गया और यहूदी सारे संसार में भयानक रीति से सताए जाने के लिए तित्तर-बित्तर कर दिए गए।
बपतिस्मे को बाइबल के अनुसार तथा परमेश्वर को स्वीकार्य होने के लिए, उसमें उसके उपरोक्त तीनों उद्देश्यों का पूरा होना अनिवार्य है - दोनों, देने वाले और लेने वाले के द्वारा। इस के अतिरिक्त, जो भी किया जाएगा, चाहे वह किसी भी रीति से किया जाए, किसी भी नियम या विधि के अंतर्गत किया जाए, वह प्रभु द्वारा उसके वचन में बताया गया बपतिस्मा नहीं होगा। इन सभी गलत और व्यर्थ बपतिस्मों का लिया और दिया जाना, और वह भी प्रभु के नाम में, जानते-बूझते हुए, अपनी ही इच्छा के अनुसार वही गलती करना है जो तब उन इस्राएलियों ने की थी। इसलिए, क्या फिर इस गलती के परिणाम उस परिणाम से भिन्न होंगे? आने वाले दिनों में, जब हम बपतिस्मे पर अपने इस अध्ययन में आगे बढ़ाते हैं, पाठकों को उपरोक्त इन तीनों उद्देश्यों को हमेशा ध्यान में रखना चाहिए; उन्हें माप-दण्ड बनाकर प्रयोग करना चाहिए और जो कुछ भी उन्हें “बपतिस्मे” के नाम में सिखाया या करवाया जाता है, इनके अनुसार उसकी जांच करनी चाहिए कि वे बातें सही हैं कि नहीं।
यदि आप एक मसीही विश्वासी हैं, तो कृपया अपने जीवन को जाँच कर देख लें कि आप वास्तव में नया जन्म पाए हुए प्रभु यीशु के शिष्य हैं, पापों से छुड़ाए गए हैं तथा आप ने अपना जीवन प्रभु की आज्ञाकारिता में जीने के लिए उस को समर्पित किया है। आपके लिए यह अनिवार्य है कि आप परमेश्वर के वचन की सही शिक्षाओं को जानने के द्वारा एक परिपक्व विश्वासी बनें, तथा सभी शिक्षाओं को वचन की कसौटी पर परखने, और बेरिया के विश्वासियों के समान, लोगों की बातों को पहले वचन से जाँचने और उनकी सत्यता को निश्चित करने के बाद ही उनको स्वीकार करने और मानने वाले बनें (प्रेरितों 17:11; 1 थिस्सलुनीकियों 5:21)। अन्यथा शैतान द्वारा छोड़े हुए झूठे प्रेरित और भविष्यद्वक्ता मसीह के सेवक बन कर (2 कुरिन्थियों 11:13-15) अपनी ठग विद्या और चतुराई से आपको प्रभु के लिए अप्रभावी कर देंगे और आप के मसीही जीवन एवं आशीषों का नाश कर देंगे।
यदि आपने प्रभु की शिष्यता को अभी तक स्वीकार नहीं किया है, तो अपने अनन्त जीवन और स्वर्गीय आशीषों को सुनिश्चित करने के लिए अभी प्रभु यीशु के पक्ष में अपना निर्णय कर लीजिए। जहाँ प्रभु की आज्ञाकारिता है, उसके वचन की बातों का आदर और पालन है, वहाँ प्रभु की आशीष और सुरक्षा भी है। प्रभु यीशु से अपने पापों के लिए क्षमा माँगकर, स्वेच्छा से तथा सच्चे मन से अपने आप को उसकी अधीनता में समर्पित कर दीजिए - उद्धार और स्वर्गीय जीवन का यही एकमात्र मार्ग है। आपको स्वेच्छा और सच्चे मन से प्रभु यीशु मसीह से केवल एक छोटी प्रार्थना करनी है, और साथ ही अपना जीवन उसे पूर्णतः समर्पित करना है। आप यह प्रार्थना और समर्पण कुछ इस प्रकार से भी कर सकते हैं, “प्रभु यीशु मैं आपका धन्यवाद करता हूँ कि आपने मेरे पापों की क्षमा और समाधान के लिए उन पापों को अपने ऊपर लिया, उनके कारण मेरे स्थान पर क्रूस की मृत्यु सही, गाड़े गए, और मेरे उद्धार के लिए आप तीसरे दिन जी भी उठे, और आज जीवित प्रभु परमेश्वर हैं। कृपया मेरे पापों को क्षमा करें, मुझे अपनी शरण में लें, और मुझे अपना शिष्य बना लें। मैं अपना जीवन आप के हाथों में समर्पित करता हूँ।” सच्चे और समर्पित मन से की गई आपकी एक प्रार्थना आपके वर्तमान तथा भविष्य को, इस लोक के और परलोक के जीवन को, अनन्तकाल के लिए स्वर्गीय एवं आशीषित बना देगी।

The Purpose of Baptism (4) - Conclusion
We have seen in the past three articles that baptism, since its inception, was never a ritual or formality; was never taken or given casually, but was always with a sense of purpose and sincerity. It was always given only after person’s confession of sins and repentance; except for the baptism of the Lord Jesus, which, as the Lord Himself said, was done “to fulfill all righteousness”, i.e., for obedience to God.
The purposes of baptism can be summarized in three points that we have seen in the preceding articles:
Witness - It is meant to be an external, public witnessing of the inner transformation, his changed life, brought about in the person by his confessing and repenting of sins.
Preparation - Through taking baptism, the person is conveying to the world that he has placed himself in the hands of the Lord, and is now being prepared by the Lord for the eventual final accounting and judgment that everyone will have to face to receive their final rewards and consequences, for what they have done or left undone in their life, as a follower of Christ.
Obedience - Taking baptism is an expression of one’s submission and surrender to God and His Word, of being committed to live in obedience to God - as demonstrated by the baptism of the Lord Jesus. The Lord was sinless and righteous; He did not need any confession and repentance; but still subjected Himself to God’s ordinances, and placed before us His example of obedience to God.
The importance and utility of recognizing and understanding these purposes is in implementing them. As said earlier, at the beginning of this series, just as with the others, baptism too has been reduced to a denominational ritual, a casual formality to be fulfilled to meet the rules and regulations of the denominations, sects, and groups into which Christendom has divided itself. Each of these denominations, sects, and groups insists on baptizing persons according to their own rules and regulations. Through their own contrived rules and regulations, they have all coupled many other things in a person’s life to baptism, so that without being baptized according to their manner, those things also cannot be done for the person. This is quite unlike any such teaching, instruction, or example given in God’s Word the Bible. Such is their commitment and adherence, their fidelity to their own rules and regulations, that to have them fulfilled, they with impunity pay scant respect to the actual teachings of God’s Word, instead they utterly disregard it - all in the name of God!
This is similar to the situation prevailing amongst God’s people the Israelites, before they were severely chastised, sent in to captivity, and dispersed amongst the nations (Isaiah 1:4-20; Jeremiah 7:19; 8:5-9; 22:5-9; 26:4-6; Ezekiel 39:23-24). The Israelites were fulfilling their rituals, feasts, and ceremonies; religious activities were being observed, but God was not happy with them, since godliness was not seen in their lives. They were fulfilling religious formalities, but they were neither witnessing as people of God, nor preparing to be accountable to God and be judged by Him, and obedience to God and His God’s Word had been replaced by obedience to men. When despite several warnings, they refused to mend their ways and conform to God’s Word, God had to deal with them. Much the same situation prevailed at the time of the Lord Jesus’s earthly ministry. The restored and rebuilt temple was there, with all the religious activities, but godliness made evident through witnessing, preparation, and obedience to God was sorely missing. The religious leaders, still did what they had once been severely punished for - taught and implemented their own wisdom as ‘word of god’ (Matthew 15:3-9). So abhorrent had the condition become that the Lord had to call the Temple a ‘den of thieves’ (Matthew 21:13); and eventually, the ‘thieves’ of this ‘den’ conspired against the Son of God and had Him caught and killed for speaking out against them, for exposing them for what they actually were. But as the Lord had prophesied (Matthew 24:1-2), because of their recalcitrant attitude within a few years, the Temple was utterly destroyed and the Jews were dispersed to be persecuted all over the world.
For a baptism to be Biblical and acceptable to God, this three-fold purpose of baptism has to be fulfilled - by both, the ones taking and giving it. Anything else, done in whatever manner, or under whichever rules, regulations, and rituals, is not the baptism that the Lord God has given in His Word. Practicing all such specious baptisms, and that too in the name of the Lord, and purportedly in obedience to God’s Word, is knowingly and willfully committing the same offence against God as those Israelites were committing at that time. Therefore, will the eventual consequences be any different? In the days ahead, as we carry on with this study on baptism, the readers should always keep these three purposes in mind, to serve as a standard and to cross-check whatever they are told or they have practiced as “baptism.”
If you are a Christian Believer, then please examine your life and make sure that you are actually a Born-Again disciple of the Lord, i.e., are redeemed from your sins, have submitted and surrendered your life to the Lord Jesus to live in obedience to Him and His Word. Whoever may be the preacher or teacher, but you should always, like the Berean Believers, first cross-check and test all teachings that you receive, from the Word of God. Only after ascertaining the truth and veracity of the teachings brought to you by men, should you accept and obey them (Acts 17:11; 1 Thessalonians 5:21). If you do not do this, the false apostles and prophets sent by Satan as ministers of Christ (2 Corinthians 11:13-15), will by their trickery, cunningness, and craftiness render you ineffective for the Lord and cause severe damage to your Christian life and your rewards.
If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord Jesus, then to ensure your eternal life and heavenly rewards, take a decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now. Wherever there is surrender and obedience towards the Lord Jesus, the Lord’s blessings and safety are also there. If you are still not Born Again, have not obtained salvation, or have not asked the Lord Jesus for forgiveness for your sins, then you have the opportunity to do so right now. A short prayer said voluntarily with a sincere heart, with heartfelt repentance for your sins, and a fully submissive attitude, “Lord Jesus, I confess that I have disobeyed You, and have knowingly or unknowingly, in mind, in thought, in attitude, and in deeds, committed sins. I believe that you have fully borne the punishment of my sins by your sacrifice on the cross, and have paid the full price of those sins for all eternity. Please forgive my sins, change my heart and mind towards you, and make me your disciple, take me with you." God longs for your company and wants to see you blessed, but to make this possible, is your personal decision. Will you not say this prayer now, while you have the time and opportunity to do so - the decision is yours.
