आरंभिक विचार (2) – पुराने नियम के प्ररूप
पिछले लेख में हमने देखा था कि बाइबल परमेश्वर का एकमात्र सत्य, अनन्तकालीन, अचूक, अपरिवर्तनीय वचन है जो सर्वदा के लिए स्वर्ग में स्थापित है; जो कभी भी समय, स्थान, या व्यक्ति के अनुसार बदलता नहीं है। इसलिए, इस तथ्य को बपतिस्मे के बारे में हमारे इस अध्ययन पर लागू करने के बाद हम समझ सकते हैं कि शब्द ‘बपतिस्मा’ या ‘बपतिस्मा लेने’ का जो अर्थ और अभिप्राय नए नियम के उन आरंभिक लोगों के लिए रहा होगा जिन्होंने बपतिस्मा लिया था, वही उसका मूल, अपरिवर्तनीय अर्थ है जो हमेशा सभी स्थानों पर, सभी के लिए लागू है। कोई भी अन्य अर्थ या व्याख्या इस मूल अर्थ को और स्पष्ट कर सकती है, उसकी पुष्टि कर सकती है, किन्तु कभी भी उसे बदल नहीं सकती है, उसके स्थान पर कोई और अर्थ नहीं ला सकती है। इस संदर्भ में हमने दो बातों को आगे के विचार के लिए अपने सामने रखा था - पहली, क्या पुराना नियम बपतिस्मे के बारे में कुछ कहता है, और यदि कहता है तो क्या कहता है? दूसरी, क्यों किसी ने भी यूहन्ना बपतिस्मा देने वाले या प्रभु यीशु के शिष्यों पर कोई नई रीति आरंभ करने का दोष नहीं लगाया? ऐसा कैसे प्रतीत होता है कि सभी ‘बपतिस्मे’ से परिचित थे, और बिना किसी वाद विवाद के उसे स्वीकार कर लिया? ये दोनों बातें परस्पर संबंधित हैं, और हम आज इनके बारे में देखेंगे।
हमें यह एहसास करने की आवश्यकता है कि यद्यपि पुराने नियम में बपतिस्मे का कोई उल्लेख नहीं है, परन्तु परमेश्वर द्वारा मूसा में होकर इस्राएलियों को दी गई व्यवस्था, अनुष्ठानों, और रीतियों में अनुष्ठान के अनुसार स्नान करना, शुद्ध होना, और स्वच्छ करना अत्यावश्यक तथा बहुत महत्वपूर्ण बातें थीं. उदाहरण के लिए, व्यवस्था में वस्त्रों को धोने और स्नान करके स्वच्छ होना कई परिस्थितियों में निर्धारित किया गया है, जैसे कि उनके लिए जो:
रीति के अनुसार अशुद्ध हों (लैव्यव्यवस्था 14:8-9)।
जो शरीर के किसी रिसाव या प्रमेह के द्वारा अशुद्ध हों (लैव्यव्यवस्था 15:3-12)।
जो लहू या किसी मरे हुए पशु को खाने के कारण अशुद्ध हो गए हों (लैव्यव्यवस्था 17:15-16)।
जो किसी मरे हुए व्यक्ति, या मनुष्यों की अस्थियों, या कब्र को छूने के कारण अशुद्ध हो गए हों (गिनती 19:16-20)।
महायाजक, हारून पहला था, को महा-पवित्र स्थान में प्रवेश करने से पहले अपने आप को अनुष्ठान के अनुसार शुद्ध और स्वच्छ करना होता थी, उसके बाद ही वह मिलाप वाले तंबू के महा-पवित्र स्थान में प्रवेश कर सकता था (लैव्यव्यवस्था 16:23-28)।
पुराने नियम में भविष्यद्वक्ताओं ने भी परमेश्वर को स्वीकार्य होने के लिए शुद्ध और स्वच्छ होने के लिए कहा है (यशायाह 1:16; ज़कर्याह 13:1)। और प्रभु यीशु ने भी इसी संकेत देते हुए पतरस से उसके पाँव धोने के बारे में यूहन्ना 13:6-10 में बात की - यहाँ पर पद 10 पर विशेष ध्यान दीजिए। इब्रानियों का लेखक भी इब्रानियों 9:6-10 में इन्हीं अनुष्ठान के अनुसार शुद्ध और स्वच्छ होने की बातों का उल्लेख करता है।
इसीलिए जब प्रभु यीशु मसीह के अग्रदूत, यूहन्ना बपतिस्मा देने वाले ने अपनी सेवकाई का आरंभ पश्चाताप के प्रचार के साथ किया और यरदन नदी में बपतिस्मा देने लगा (मत्ती 3:1-6); और इसी प्रकार से जब पतरस ने भक्त यहूदियों से पश्चाताप करने और बपतिस्मा लेने के लिए कहा, तो इनमें से किसी की कही बात से किसी को कोई अचंभा नहीं हुआ। यहाँ तक कि फरीसियों और सदूकियों ने भी बपतिस्मे के लिए यूहन्ना बपतिस्मा देने वाले के आह्वान को बिना किसी विवाद के स्वीकार कर लिया, क्योंकि उनकी समझ के अनुसार यह कोई नई बात नहीं थी। यह उनकी जानी-पहचानी धोने और शुद्ध तथा स्वच्छ होने की रीति के अनुसार ही था। तो, यद्यपि पुराने नियम में बपतिस्मे का कोई उल्लेख नहीं है, किन्तु फिर भी व्यवस्था तथा भविष्यद्वक्ताओं में लोगों के जल के द्वारा स्नान करने, धोने और स्वच्छ होने के कई हवाले हैं। साथ ही, जल के द्वारा बाहरी रीति से स्वच्छ होने को भीतरी रीति से पापों से स्वच्छ होने के चिह्न के रूप में भी स्वीकार किया जाता था, जैसा कि कुछ उपरोक्त हवालों से (यशायाह 1:16; ज़कर्याह 13:1; यूहन्ना 13:10), तथा कुछ अन्य से भी (इब्रानियों 10:19-22; तीतुस 3:4-7) स्पष्ट है। अगले लेख में हम मूल यूनानी भाषा में प्रयोग किए गए शब्द, जिसे नए नियम में हिन्दी में ‘बपतिस्मा’ लिखा गया है, के अर्थ को देखेंगे।
यदि आप एक मसीही विश्वासी हैं, तो कृपया अपने जीवन को जाँच कर देख लें कि आप वास्तव में नया जन्म पाए हुए प्रभु यीशु के शिष्य हैं, पापों से छुड़ाए गए हैं तथा आप ने अपना जीवन प्रभु की आज्ञाकारिता में जीने के लिए उस को समर्पित किया है। आपके लिए यह अनिवार्य है कि आप परमेश्वर के वचन की सही शिक्षाओं को जानने के द्वारा एक परिपक्व विश्वासी बनें, तथा सभी शिक्षाओं को वचन की कसौटी पर परखने, और बेरिया के विश्वासियों के समान, लोगों की बातों को पहले वचन से जाँचने और उनकी सत्यता को निश्चित करने के बाद ही उनको स्वीकार करने और मानने वाले बनें (प्रेरितों 17:11; 1 थिस्सलुनीकियों 5:21)। अन्यथा शैतान द्वारा छोड़े हुए झूठे प्रेरित और भविष्यद्वक्ता मसीह के सेवक बन कर (2 कुरिन्थियों 11:13-15) अपनी ठग विद्या और चतुराई से आपको प्रभु के लिए अप्रभावी कर देंगे और आप के मसीही जीवन एवं आशीषों का नाश कर देंगे।
यदि आपने प्रभु की शिष्यता को अभी तक स्वीकार नहीं किया है, तो अपने अनन्त जीवन और स्वर्गीय आशीषों को सुनिश्चित करने के लिए अभी प्रभु यीशु के पक्ष में अपना निर्णय कर लीजिए। जहाँ प्रभु की आज्ञाकारिता है, उसके वचन की बातों का आदर और पालन है, वहाँ प्रभु की आशीष और सुरक्षा भी है। प्रभु यीशु से अपने पापों के लिए क्षमा माँगकर, स्वेच्छा से तथा सच्चे मन से अपने आप को उसकी अधीनता में समर्पित कर दीजिए - उद्धार और स्वर्गीय जीवन का यही एकमात्र मार्ग है। आपको स्वेच्छा और सच्चे मन से प्रभु यीशु मसीह से केवल एक छोटी प्रार्थना करनी है, और साथ ही अपना जीवन उसे पूर्णतः समर्पित करना है। आप यह प्रार्थना और समर्पण कुछ इस प्रकार से भी कर सकते हैं, “प्रभु यीशु मैं आपका धन्यवाद करता हूँ कि आपने मेरे पापों की क्षमा और समाधान के लिए उन पापों को अपने ऊपर लिया, उनके कारण मेरे स्थान पर क्रूस की मृत्यु सही, गाड़े गए, और मेरे उद्धार के लिए आप तीसरे दिन जी भी उठे, और आज जीवित प्रभु परमेश्वर हैं। कृपया मेरे पापों को क्षमा करें, मुझे अपनी शरण में लें, और मुझे अपना शिष्य बना लें। मैं अपना जीवन आप के हाथों में समर्पित करता हूँ।” सच्चे और समर्पित मन से की गई आपकी एक प्रार्थना आपके वर्तमान तथा भविष्य को, इस लोक के और परलोक के जीवन को, अनन्तकाल के लिए स्वर्गीय एवं आशीषित बना देगी।

Preliminary Considerations (2) - The Old Testament Antecedents
In the last article we have seen that since God’s Word the Bible is the one and only true, eternal, infallible, unalterable Word of God forever established in heaven; never ever changing according to time, place or person. Therefore, applying this fact to our study on baptism means that what the term ‘baptism’ or ‘to be baptized’ meant for the people who had taken baptism in the New Testament initially, the same meaning is the basic, unchanging meaning for everyone else, at all times, and all places. Every other meaning and interpretation can supplement or complement this basic meaning, but never replace or change it. In this context we had brought up two points for further consideration - firstly, what, if anything, does the Old Testament say about baptism? Second, why did no one accuse John the Baptist or the disciples of Christ Jesus of starting off some ritual? How come, everyone seemed to be familiar with the term ‘baptism’, and accepted it, without any controversy? Both of these points are related, and we will see about them today.
We need to realize that in the Old Testament although baptism has not been mentioned, but in the Law, ceremonies, and rituals given by God through Moses to the Israelites, ceremonial washings were an integral and very important part of the observances. For example, washing of clothes and bathing was prescribed in the Law:
For people ritually unclean (Leviticus 14:8-9).
For people made unclean because of body fluids (Leviticus 15:3-12).
For people become unclean because of eating blood or dead animals (Leviticus 17:15-16).
For anyone who has become unclean by touching a dead person, or bones of aman, or a grave (Numbers 19:16-20)
The High Priest, Aaron being the first one, on the day of Atonement had to first make himself ceremonially clean and then enter the Most Holy Place of the Tabernacle (Leviticus 16:23-28).
The Old Testament prophets also spoke of washing and cleansing from sins to become acceptable to God (Isaiah 1:16; Zechariah 13:1). And, the Lord Jesus in John 13, alludes to this in His conversation with Peter about washing of Peter’s feet John 13:6-10 - pay particular attention to verse 10 here. The author of Hebrews also alludes to these ceremonial washings in Hebrews 9:6-10.
Therefore, when John the Baptist in his ministry as the forerunner of the Messiah, the Lord Jesus, came preaching repentance and baptizing people in the river Jordan (Matthew 3:1-6); and similarly, when Peter asked the devout Jews to repent and be baptized, neither of them surprised anyone by asking the people to be baptized. Even the Pharisees and Sadducees accepted John the Baptist’s call to be baptized, without raising any controversy, since to their understanding this was nothing new. It was similar to their known and accepted practice of ceremonially cleansing themselves. So, even though baptism is not mentioned in the Old Testament, yet there are ample references in the Law as well as in the writings of the Prophets, of people being asked to wash, bathe, and cleanse themselves, using water. Moreover, outside cleansing with water was also known and accepted as symbolical of the inner cleansing from sin, as is apparent from some of the references given above (Isaiah 1:16; Zechariah 13:1; John 13:10), and some others (Hebrews 10:19-22; Titus 3:4-7). In the next article we will consider the meaning of the word used in the original Greek language and translated as ‘baptism’ in English in the New Testament.
If you are a Christian Believer, then please examine your life and make sure that you are actually a Born-Again disciple of the Lord, i.e., are redeemed from your sins, have submitted and surrendered your life to the Lord Jesus to live in obedience to Him and His Word. Whoever may be the preacher or teacher, but you should always, like the Berean Believers, first cross-check and test all teachings that you receive, from the Word of God. Only after ascertaining the truth and veracity of the teachings brought to you by men, should you accept and obey them (Acts 17:11; 1 Thessalonians 5:21). If you do not do this, the false apostles and prophets sent by Satan as ministers of Christ (2 Corinthians 11:13-15), will by their trickery, cunningness, and craftiness render you ineffective for the Lord and cause severe damage to your Christian life and your rewards.
If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord Jesus, then to ensure your eternal life and heavenly rewards, take a decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now. Wherever there is surrender and obedience towards the Lord Jesus, the Lord’s blessings and safety are also there. If you are still not Born Again, have not obtained salvation, or have not asked the Lord Jesus for forgiveness for your sins, then you have the opportunity to do so right now. A short prayer said voluntarily with a sincere heart, with heartfelt repentance for your sins, and a fully submissive attitude, “Lord Jesus, I confess that I have disobeyed You, and have knowingly or unknowingly, in mind, in thought, in attitude, and in deeds, committed sins. I believe that you have fully borne the punishment of my sins by your sacrifice on the cross, and have paid the full price of those sins for all eternity. Please forgive my sins, change my heart and mind towards you, and make me your disciple, take me with you." God longs for your company and wants to see you blessed, but to make this possible, is your personal decision. Will you not say this prayer now, while you have the time and opportunity to do so - the decision is yours.
