प्रभु की मेज़ - दीनता और सेवा की यादगारी
जैसा कि पिछले लेखों में कहा गया है, नए नियम से प्रभु भोज के अर्थ, शिक्षाओं, और अभिप्रायों को सीखने के लिए, हमें चारों सुसमाचारों, मत्ती 26, मरकुस 14, लूका 22, और यूहन्ना 13 में दिए गए विवरणों को साथ मिलाकर देखना चाहिए, क्योंकि भिन्न लेखकों ने घटनाक्रम के भिन्न भागों को लिखा है। साथ ही हमारे इस अध्ययन के लिए, जैसा हम आरंभ में कह चुके हैं, यह ध्यान में रखना चाहिए कि हमारा उद्देश्य चारों सुसमाचार के विवरणों में सामंजस्य बैठाकर उन्हें क्रम अनुसार प्रस्तुत करना नहीं है, परंतु उनसे सीखना है। अभी तक हमने मत्ती 26:17-19 तथा मरकुस और लूका के संबंधित खंडों से देखा है कि शिष्यों ने प्रभु यीशु से पूछा कि वह फसह, जिसे वे प्रभु में विश्वास के कारण बने आत्मिक परिवार के रूप में मनाना चाहते थे, किस स्थान पर खाना चाहता है। प्रभु ने पतरस और यूहन्ना को एक विशेष घर में भेजा, और उन्होंने वहाँ पर फसह की तैयारी की। इसके बाद मत्ती 26:20, मरकुस 14:20, और लूक 22:14 हमें बताते हैं कि शाम के समय प्रभु भी वहाँ पहुँचा और शिष्यों के साथ फसह खाने के लिए बैठ गया, और फिर कुछ वार्तालाप तथा घटनाक्रम होना आरंभ होता है।
इस वार्तालाप और घटनाक्रम का मुख्य वर्णन यूहन्ना 13 में दिया गया है; कुछ बाइबल व्याख्याकर्ताओं का यह कहना है कि यूहन्ना 13, फसह से पहले प्रभु यीशु द्वारा बैतनिय्याह के शमौन के घर पर खाए गए भोज के बारे में और इसमें बताई गई बातचीत तथा घटनाएं वहाँ पर घटित हुई थीं (यूहन्ना 12:1)। किन्तु अन्य उतने ही निश्चित हैं कि यूहन्ना 13 प्रभु यीशु के शिष्यों के साथ खाए गए अंतिम भोज का विवरण है, जिसके दौरान उसने प्रभु की मेज़ को स्थापित किया, और फिर इसके बाद यहूदा इस्करियोती की सहायता से उसे पकड़ कर क्रूस पर चढ़ाने के लिए ले जाया गया। दोनों में से चाहे जो भी सही हो, एक बात निश्चित है, ये बातें और घटनाएं प्रभु के पकड़वाए जाने और क्रूस पर चढ़ाए जाने के बहुत निकट हुई थीं, और उन अंतिम बातों और घटनाओं का भाग हैं जिनके दौरान प्रभु ने मेज़ की स्थापना की थी। हम यूहन्ना 13 को प्रभु द्वारा शिष्यों के साथ फसह खाते समय के वृतांत के रूप में लेंगे, जिसके दौरान उसने प्रभु भोज की स्थापना की, और फिर इसके कुछ समय के बाद वह पकड़ा गया और क्रूस पर चढ़ाए जाने के लिए ले जाया गया; और इससे सीखेंगे।

प्रतिज्ञा किए गए मसीहा में यह दीनता और सेवा करने का रवैया होना, यशायाह के द्वारा पहले ही भविष्यवाणी करके बता दिया गया था (यशायाह 42:1-4), और मत्ती इसे प्रभु यीशु मसीह के जीवन में पूरा होने की बात लिखता है (मत्ती 12:17-21)। बाद में, पवित्र आत्मा के द्वारा, फिलिप्पियों 2:1-11 में प्रेरित पौलुस फिर से इस बात की पुष्टि करता है। समस्त सुसमाचारों में तथा परमेश्वर के संपूर्ण वचन में जहाँ भी प्रभु यीशु के बारे में लिखा गया है, हम उसमें यही दीनता और सेवा का रवैया देखते हैं। प्रभु यीशु ने प्रभु भोज को अपने शिष्यों के लिए उसकी यादगार के लिए दिया था (लूका 22:19; 1 कुरिन्थियों 11:24-25); और प्रभु की यादगार का अर्थ है प्रभु द्वारा किए गए कार्यों को, उसके जीवन और व्यवहार को उसी के समान करने के लिए याद करना; और उसकी शिक्षाओं और आज्ञाओं को पालन करने के लिए याद करना। प्रभु की मेज़ की स्थापना की तैयारियां भी हमें उन सद्गुणों को सिखाती हैं जो हमारे जीवनों में, हम जो प्रभु के नाम से जाने जाते हैं, प्रभु के शिष्य हैं, होने चाहिएं। हम इस खंड से सीखते हैं कि, प्रभु यीशु के शिष्य होने के नाते हमें वे लोग होना चाहिए जो पहले कर के या जी कर दिखाते हैं, और तब ही उस बात का प्रचार करते या उसकी शिक्षा देते हैं। प्रभु के समान ही, दीनता और सेवा करना हमारे जीवनों की पहचान होनी चाहिए; तथा जब अवसर आए तो हमें औरों के पाँव धोने के लिए तैयार रहना चाहिए।
यदि आप एक मसीही विश्वासी हैं, और प्रभु की मेज़ में भाग लेते रहे हैं, तो कृपया अपने जीवन को जाँच कर देख लें कि आप वास्तव में पापों से छुड़ाए गए हैं तथा आप ने अपना जीवन प्रभु की आज्ञाकारिता में जीने के लिए उस को समर्पित किया है। आपके लिए यह अनिवार्य है कि आप परमेश्वर के वचन की सही शिक्षाओं को जानने के द्वारा एक परिपक्व विश्वासी बनें, तथा सभी शिक्षाओं को वचन की कसौटी पर परखने, और बेरिया के विश्वासियों के समान, लोगों की बातों को पहले वचन से जाँचने और उनकी सत्यता को निश्चित करने के बाद ही उनको स्वीकार करने और मानने वाले बनें (प्रेरितों 17:11; 1 थिस्सलुनीकियों 5:21)। अन्यथा शैतान द्वारा छोड़े हुए झूठे प्रेरित और भविष्यद्वक्ता मसीह के सेवक बन कर (2 कुरिन्थियों 11:13-15) अपनी ठग विद्या और चतुराई से आपको प्रभु के लिए अप्रभावी कर देंगे और आप के मसीही जीवन एवं आशीषों का नाश कर देंगे।
यदि आपने प्रभु की शिष्यता को अभी तक स्वीकार नहीं किया है, तो अपने अनन्त जीवन और स्वर्गीय आशीषों को सुनिश्चित करने के लिए अभी प्रभु यीशु के पक्ष में अपना निर्णय कर लीजिए। जहाँ प्रभु की आज्ञाकारिता है, उसके वचन की बातों का आदर और पालन है, वहाँ प्रभु की आशीष और सुरक्षा भी है। प्रभु यीशु से अपने पापों के लिए क्षमा माँगकर, स्वेच्छा से तथा सच्चे मन से अपने आप को उसकी अधीनता में समर्पित कर दीजिए - उद्धार और स्वर्गीय जीवन का यही एकमात्र मार्ग है। आपको स्वेच्छा और सच्चे मन से प्रभु यीशु मसीह से केवल एक छोटी प्रार्थना करनी है, और साथ ही अपना जीवन उसे पूर्णतः समर्पित करना है। आप यह प्रार्थना और समर्पण कुछ इस प्रकार से भी कर सकते हैं, “प्रभु यीशु मैं आपका धन्यवाद करता हूँ कि आपने मेरे पापों की क्षमा और समाधान के लिए उन पापों को अपने ऊपर लिया, उनके कारण मेरे स्थान पर क्रूस की मृत्यु सही, गाड़े गए, और मेरे उद्धार के लिए आप तीसरे दिन जी भी उठे, और आज जीवित प्रभु परमेश्वर हैं। कृपया मेरे पापों को क्षमा करें, मुझे अपनी शरण में लें, और मुझे अपना शिष्य बना लें। मैं अपना जीवन आप के हाथों में समर्पित करता हूँ।” सच्चे और समर्पित मन से की गई आपकी एक प्रार्थना आपके वर्तमान तथा भविष्य को, इस लोक के और परलोक के जीवन को, अनन्तकाल के लिए स्वर्गीय एवं आशीषित बना देगी।

The Lord’s Table - A Remembrance for Humility & Service
As has been said in the previous articles, to learn the meaning, teachings, and implications of the Holy Communion from the New Testament, we need to see all the accounts given in the four Gospels, from Matthew 26, Mark 14, Luke 22, and John 13, since different authors have stated different parts of the events. Also, for this study it should be kept in mind, as has been said initially, that the purpose here is not to harmonize the four Gospel accounts and present them chronologically, but to learn from them. So far, we have seen from Matthew 26:17-19, along with the related passages from Mark and Luke, that the disciples ask the Lord about the place to eat the Passover, which they were celebrating together as on spiritual family by faith in the Lord. The Lord sends Peter and John to a specific house, and they prepare to eat the Passover there. After this, Matthew 26:20, Mark 14:20, and Luke 22:14 tell us that in the evening the Lord Jesus reaches the place and sits down with His disciples for the Passover, and then some conversation and events start unfolding.
The main narrative of this conversation and events is given in John 13; some Bible commentators are of the opinion that John 13 is about the Lord having a supper at the house of Simon of Bethany before the Passover, and the mentioned conversation and events happened at that time (John 12:1). But others are equally sure that John 13 is the account of the last supper that the Lord had with His disciples, during which He established the Lord’s Table, and was afterwards caught with the help of Judas Iscariot and taken to be crucified. Whichever be true, one thing is for sure - it happened soon before the Lord’s being caught and crucified, and is a part of the final events, during which the Lord’s Table was established. We will learn from the conversation and events of John 13 as happening the same evening when the Lord was eating the Passover, during which He established the Holy Communion, and sometime afterwards, He was caught and taken to be crucified. [For the English readers, another thing to be kept in mind is that though the KJV and NKJV translate John 13:2 as “supper being ended”, but the general consensus amongst the translators is that, as is evident from 13:4, 26, the incidence of the Lord Jesus washing the feet of the disciples happened during the supper; and the appropriate translation is “after the supper was served”, or “during supper”, as the NASB, NIV, HCSB, ESV, EBR, LEB, etc. put it.]
With this in mind, we see a peculiar incidence happening in John 13:4-17 - the Lord Jesus gets up from the supper, takes off His garments, i.e., the outer clothes, girds Himself with a towel, takes a basin of water and washes the feet of the disciples. What prompted Him to do so is not mentioned, nor is this incidence mentioned in any of the other Gospel accounts. Simon Peter protests and does not want to allow the Lord to wash his feet, but the Lord explains to him, and Peter agrees. Then the Lord finally concludes by instructing the disciples to learn from His example, be humble like Him, be ready and willing to “wash each other’s feet”, and assures them that by doing so, they will be blessed (John 13:17). This was the teaching pattern of the Lord Jesus, He first demonstrated through His actions and then taught about it; as Luke says in the opening sentence of the Book of Acts, “The former account I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach” (Acts 1:1). Take note of the sequence of words here, first is “to do” and then comes “to teach”; whereas nowadays, people prefer to “teach” or preach, but hardly ever demonstrate it through their lives. It is very rare to see someone first doing or living by the Lord’s instructions, and then preaching or teaching about them.
This humility and attitude of serving in the promised Messiah had already been prophesied by Isaiah (Isaiah 42:1-4), and Matthew speaks of the fulfilment of this prophecy in the life of the Lord Jesus in Matthew 12:17-21. Later, through the Holy Spirit, in Philippians 2:1-11, the Apostle Paul again affirms it. Throughout the Gospel accounts, and wherever His life is mentioned in God’s Word, we see this attitude of humility and service in the Lord Jesus. The Lord Jesus had established the Holy Communion as a way of His remembrance by His disciples (Luke 22:19; 1 Corinthians 11:24-25); and remembrance of the Lord is to remember for emulation what He did, how he lived and behaved; and to remember His instructions for His disciples to follow them. Even the preparation for the establishing of the Lord’s Table teaches us the virtues we need to have in our lives as people known by the name of the Lord, as the followers of the Lord Jesus. We learn from this section that we, the disciples of the Lord Jesus, need to be those who first practice, and only then preach; humility and service should characterize our lives; and we should be willing and ready to wash the feet of others, as and when it needs to done.
If you are a Christian Believer, and have been participating in the Lord’s Table, then please examine your life and make sure that you are actually a disciple of the Lord, i.e., are redeemed from your sins, have submitted and surrendered your life to the Lord Jesus to live in obedience to Him and His Word. You should also always, like the Berean Believers, first check and test all teachings that you receive from the Word of God, and only after ascertaining the truth and veracity of the teachings brought to you by men, should you accept and obey them (Acts 17:11; 1 Thessalonians 5:21). If you do not do this, the false apostles and prophets sent by Satan as ministers of Christ (2 Corinthians 11:13-15), will by their trickery, cunningness, and craftiness render you ineffective for the Lord and cause severe damage to your Christian life and your rewards.
If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord Jesus, then to ensure your eternal life and heavenly rewards, take a decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now. Wherever there is surrender and obedience towards the Lord Jesus, the Lord’s blessings and safety are also there. If you are still not Born Again, have not obtained salvation, or have not asked the Lord Jesus for forgiveness for your sins, then you have the opportunity to do so right now. A short prayer said voluntarily with a sincere heart, with heartfelt repentance for your sins, and a fully submissive attitude, “Lord Jesus, I confess that I have disobeyed You, and have knowingly or unknowingly, in mind, in thought, in attitude, and in deeds, committed sins. I believe that you have fully borne the punishment of my sins by your sacrifice on the cross, and have paid the full price of those sins for all eternity. Please forgive my sins, change my heart and mind towards you, and make me your disciple, take me with you." God longs for your company and wants to see you blessed, but to make this possible, is your personal decision. Will you not say this prayer now, while you have the time and opportunity to do so - the decision is yours.
