बपतिस्मा - किस को? (2)
हमने पिछले लेख में देखा है कि प्रभु यीशु की पृथ्वी की सेवकाई के दौरान, न तो प्रभु ने और न ही उसके शिष्यों ने बपतिस्मे दिए, सिवाए यूहन्ना 4:1-2 के एक उल्लेख के। प्रभु यीशु ने जब शिष्यों को उनकी सेवकाई और प्रचार के लिए भेजा, तब भी न तो प्रभु ने उन से किसी को बपतिस्मा देने के लिए कहा, और न ही उन्होंने किसी को बपतिस्मा दिया। प्रभु के स्वर्गारोहण से पहले, उसके द्वारा शिष्यों को दी गई सेवकाई की महान आज्ञा में शिष्यों से कहा कि वे संसार भर में जाकर और शिष्य बनाएं, तथा उनके प्रभु यीशु के शिष्य बन जाने के बाद फिर उनको बपतिस्मा दें। आज के लेख में हम प्रभु यीशु के इस निर्देश के पालन के उदाहरणों को देखेंगे, और फिर उनसे हमारे आज के विषय के बारे में निष्कर्ष लेंगे।
शिष्यों को महान आज्ञा दिए जाने के बाद, जो पहला बपतिस्मा हम देखते हैं, वह उन 3,000 यहूदियों का है जिन्होंने पिन्तेकुस्त के दिन पतरस के संदेश को सुना, पतरस के आह्वान को स्वीकार किया और पश्चाताप किया (प्रेरितों 2:37-41)। इसके बाद यद्यपि प्रभु द्वारा लोगों को बचाए जाने और कलीसिया में जोड़े जाने का उल्लेख तो है (प्रेरितों 2:47; 5:12-14; 11:24; 16:5), किन्तु यह कहीं नहीं लिखा है की उन 3,000 के समान इन्हें भी साथ ही बपतिस्मा भी दिया गया। इसी प्रकार से जब स्तिफनुस के मारे जाने के बाद यरूशलेम की कलीसिया पर भारी सताव आया और शिष्य इधर-उधर तित्तर-बित्तर हुए, तो वे परमेश्वर के वचन का प्रचार करते हुए गए, लेकिन यहाँ पर भी किसी को बपतिस्मा दिए जाने का कोई उल्लेख नहीं है।
इससे अगला बपतिस्मा सामरिया में फिलिप्पुस की सेवकाई के साथ संबंधित है, और जिन्होंने फिलिप्पुस के प्रचार पर विश्वास किया, उन्होंने बपतिस्मा भी लिया (प्रेरितों 8:12)। जिन्होंने विश्वास किया, बपतिस्मा लिया, और फिर फिलिप्पुस के साथ जुड़े रहे, उन में से एक था शमौन टोन्हा करने वाला (प्रेरितों 8:13)। लेकिन हम बाद में दिखते हैं कि वह वास्तव में न तो बदला था, और न ही उसका उद्धार हुआ था, पतरस उससे उसके मन की कड़वाहट और अधर्म के लिए पश्चाताप करने के लिए कहता है (प्रेरितों 8:36-38)। यह स्पष्ट दिखाता है कि बपतिस्मा किसी का भी उद्धार नहीं करता है, उन्हें नहीं बचाता है; जो सुसमाचार को स्वीकार कर लेने का दावा करते हैं, और एक बाहरी परिवर्तन दिखाते हैं, बहुत संभव है कि वे अंदर से वास्तव में परिवर्तित नहीं हुए हों। और परमेश्वर पवित्र आत्मा देर-सवेर उनकी वास्तविकता को प्रकट कर ही देता है। इसके बाद अगला बपतिस्मा है कूश देश के खोजे का, फिर से फिलिप्पुस की सेवकाई के द्वारा (प्रेरितों 8:36-38)। उस खोजे ने विश्वास किया और अंगीकार किया कि “यीशु मसीह परमेश्वर का पुत्र है” (8:37), और फिलिप्पुस ने तुरंत ही उसे वहाँ मार्ग के निकट विद्यमान किसी जलाशय में बपतिस्मा दे दिया।
इसके बाद पौलुस, जो तब शाऊल कहलाता था, का बपतिस्मा दिया गया है (प्रेरितों 9:9, 18; 22:16)। फिर इसके बाद पतरस द्वारा दिए गए बपतिस्मे हैं, कुरनेलियुस और उसके घराने का (प्रेरितों 10:47-48), और फिर लुदिया और उसके घराने का (प्रेरितों 16:14-15)। फिर पौलुस की सेवकाई के दौरान हुए बपतिस्मे हैं, फिलिप्पियों के दरोगा और उसके घराने का (फिलिप्पियों 16:33); क्रिसपुस और कुरिन्थुस के लोगों के (प्रेरितों 18:8), तथा यूहन्ना बपतिस्मा देने वाले के कुछ शिष्यों का (प्रेरितों 19:1-5)।
इन बपतिस्मों के उदाहरणों से सीखने वाली बहुत सी बातें हैं, और हम इन्हें आने वाले दिनों में बपतिस्मे से संबंधित विभिन्न विषयों पर चर्चा करते हुए बारंबार देखेंगे। किन्तु हमारे आज के विषय - बपतिस्मा किसे देना है किसने लेना है, के लिए हम परमेश्वर के वचन के इन उदाहरणों से देखते और सीखते हैं कि परमेश्वर के वचन में हमेशा ही वयस्कों को ही बपतिस्मा दिया गया है। और वह भी केवल तब, जब उन्होंने पहले सुसमाचार को सुन, उसे स्वीकार किया, और उन्हें प्रचार किए गए परमेश्वर के वचन पर विश्वास किया। फिर, उनके विश्वास के अनुसार, उन्होंने या तो बपतिस्मे की माँग की, अथवा उसके लिए अपनी सहमति दी। कभी भी बपतिस्मा किसी असहमत व्यक्ति को, किसी ऐसे को जिसने सुसमाचार सुना नहीं हो या उस पर विश्वास नहीं किया हो, नहीं दिया गया है; और न ही किसी को भी कभी भी किसी और के द्वारा लाकर, उस जन के बपतिस्मे के बारे में जाने या पहचाने बिना, नहीं दिया गया है। साथ ही, यद्यपि घरानों को भी बपतिस्मा दिए जाने के उल्लेख हैं, जैसे कुरनेलियुस, लुदिया, और फिलिप्पी का दरोगा, लेकिन उनमें से किसी में भी बच्चों का, छोटे अथवा बड़े, होने का कोई उल्लेख नहीं है। संदर्भ का तात्पर्य हमेशा ही यही रहा है की बपतिस्मा केवल उन वयस्कों को ही दिया गया, जिन्होंने सुसमाचार को सुना, स्वीकार किया, और बपतिस्मे के लिए या तो सहमति दी अथवा उसकी माँग की; और हमेशा ही उसके शब्दार्थ के अनुसार दिया गया।
यदि आप एक मसीही विश्वासी हैं, तो कृपया अपने जीवन को जाँच कर देख लें कि आप वास्तव में नया जन्म पाए हुए प्रभु यीशु के शिष्य हैं, पापों से छुड़ाए गए हैं तथा आप ने अपना जीवन प्रभु की आज्ञाकारिता में जीने के लिए उस को समर्पित किया है। आपके लिए यह अनिवार्य है कि आप परमेश्वर के वचन की सही शिक्षाओं को जानने के द्वारा एक परिपक्व विश्वासी बनें, तथा सभी शिक्षाओं को वचन की कसौटी पर परखने, और बेरिया के विश्वासियों के समान, लोगों की बातों को पहले वचन से जाँचने और उनकी सत्यता को निश्चित करने के बाद ही उनको स्वीकार करने और मानने वाले बनें (प्रेरितों 17:11; 1 थिस्सलुनीकियों 5:21)। अन्यथा शैतान द्वारा छोड़े हुए झूठे प्रेरित और भविष्यद्वक्ता मसीह के सेवक बन कर (2 कुरिन्थियों 11:13-15) अपनी ठग विद्या और चतुराई से आपको प्रभु के लिए अप्रभावी कर देंगे और आप के मसीही जीवन एवं आशीषों का नाश कर देंगे।
यदि आपने प्रभु की शिष्यता को अभी तक स्वीकार नहीं किया है, तो अपने अनन्त जीवन और स्वर्गीय आशीषों को सुनिश्चित करने के लिए अभी प्रभु यीशु के पक्ष में अपना निर्णय कर लीजिए। जहाँ प्रभु की आज्ञाकारिता है, उसके वचन की बातों का आदर और पालन है, वहाँ प्रभु की आशीष और सुरक्षा भी है। प्रभु यीशु से अपने पापों के लिए क्षमा माँगकर, स्वेच्छा से तथा सच्चे मन से अपने आप को उसकी अधीनता में समर्पित कर दीजिए - उद्धार और स्वर्गीय जीवन का यही एकमात्र मार्ग है। आपको स्वेच्छा और सच्चे मन से प्रभु यीशु मसीह से केवल एक छोटी प्रार्थना करनी है, और साथ ही अपना जीवन उसे पूर्णतः समर्पित करना है। आप यह प्रार्थना और समर्पण कुछ इस प्रकार से भी कर सकते हैं, “प्रभु यीशु मैं आपका धन्यवाद करता हूँ कि आपने मेरे पापों की क्षमा और समाधान के लिए उन पापों को अपने ऊपर लिया, उनके कारण मेरे स्थान पर क्रूस की मृत्यु सही, गाड़े गए, और मेरे उद्धार के लिए आप तीसरे दिन जी भी उठे, और आज जीवित प्रभु परमेश्वर हैं। कृपया मेरे पापों को क्षमा करें, मुझे अपनी शरण में लें, और मुझे अपना शिष्य बना लें। मैं अपना जीवन आप के हाथों में समर्पित करता हूँ।” सच्चे और समर्पित मन से की गई आपकी एक प्रार्थना आपके वर्तमान तथा भविष्य को, इस लोक के और परलोक के जीवन को, अनन्तकाल के लिए स्वर्गीय एवं आशीषित बना देगी।

Baptism - For Whom? (2)
We have seen in the previous article that during the earthly ministry of the Lord Jesus, neither He nor His disciples baptized, except for the one mention in John 4:1-2. Even when the Lord Jesus sent His disciples for their preaching ministry, neither did He ask them to baptize, nor did the disciples baptize anyone. In His Great Commission given to the disciples just before His Ascension, the Lord told the disciples to go and make other disciples and to baptize those who became followers of the Lord Jesus. Today, we will see the examples of the fulfillment of this instruction of the Lord Jesus, and then derive the lesson for our today’s topic.
After the giving of the Great Commission to the disciples, the first baptism that we see happening is of those 3,000 Jews who on hearing Peter’s sermon on the day of Pentecost, accepted Peter’s exhortation and repented (Acts 2:37-41). After this, there is mention of the Lord saving people and adding them to His Church (Acts 2:47; 5:12-14; 11:24; 16:5), but that they were also simultaneously baptized as these 3,000 had been, is not mentioned. Similarly, when a great persecution arose against the Church in Jerusalem after the martyrdom of Stephen and the disciples were scattered because of it, they went preaching God’s Word, but again, though there is no mention of any baptism being carried out.
The next mention of baptism is with the ministry of Philip in Samaria, and those who believed in the preaching of Philip, they were baptized (Acts 8:12). One of those who believed, was baptized, and then continued with Philip was Simon the sorcerer (Acts 8:13). But we later see that Simon was not truly converted or saved, Peter asks him to repent of the bitterness and iniquity in his heart, and ask God for forgiveness (Acts 8:20-23). This aptly illustrates that baptism does not save anyone; those who claim to have accepted the gospel, and show an external change, may not actually be changed inside. But the Spirit of God exposes them sooner or later. The next baptism, is the baptism of the Ethiopian Eunuch, again through the ministry of Philip (Acts 8:36-38). The Eunuch believed that “Jesus Christ is the Son of God” (8:37), and Philip baptized him immediately, at some road-side water-body.
After this, we have the baptism of Paul, then known as Saul, which was given three days after Paul’s meeting the Lord on the road to Damascus (Acts 9:9, 18; 22:16). Then, we have the baptism of Cornelius and his household, after Peter was sent to them by the Holy Spirit and preached the gospel (Acts 10:47-48). Then is the baptism of Lydia and her household (Acts 16:14-15), again by Peter; of the Philippian jailor and his household (Acts 16:33); of Crispus and Corinthians (Acts 18:8); of some disciples of John the Baptist (Acts 19:1-5), all through the ministry of Paul.
While there are many things to be learnt from the above examples, and we will be considering these examples again and again when we consider other topics related to baptism. But for our current topic - who is to be baptized, we see from these examples that always and always in God’s Word it is adults who have been baptized, and that too after they heard the gospel, accepted the gospel and believed in the Word of God preached to them, and then in accordance with their belief, they either consented to be baptized or asked for it. Never has baptism been administered to non-consenting persons, or to those who had not heard and believed in the gospel, i.e., somebody being brought for baptism by someone else and being baptized, without knowing or understanding or consenting for it. Also, while there is mention of family or households being baptized, e.g., of Cornelius, Lydia, and the Philippian Jailor, but there is no mention of any children – small or young amongst them. The implication of the context is always that adults who heard and believed the gospel preached to them, at their request or with their consent, baptism, as it means literally, was given to them.
If you are a Christian Believer, then please examine your life and make sure that you are actually a Born-Again disciple of the Lord, i.e., are redeemed from your sins, have submitted and surrendered your life to the Lord Jesus to live in obedience to Him and His Word. Whoever may be the preacher or teacher, but you should always, like the Berean Believers, first cross-check and test all teachings that you receive, from the Word of God. Only after ascertaining the truth and veracity of the teachings brought to you by men, should you accept and obey them (Acts 17:11; 1 Thessalonians 5:21). If you do not do this, the false apostles and prophets sent by Satan as ministers of Christ (2 Corinthians 11:13-15), will by their trickery, cunningness, and craftiness render you ineffective for the Lord and cause severe damage to your Christian life and your rewards.
If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord Jesus, then to ensure your eternal life and heavenly rewards, take a decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now. Wherever there is surrender and obedience towards the Lord Jesus, the Lord’s blessings and safety are also there. If you are still not Born Again, have not obtained salvation, or have not asked the Lord Jesus for forgiveness for your sins, then you have the opportunity to do so right now. A short prayer said voluntarily with a sincere heart, with heartfelt repentance for your sins, and a fully submissive attitude, “Lord Jesus, I confess that I have disobeyed You, and have knowingly or unknowingly, in mind, in thought, in attitude, and in deeds, committed sins. I believe that you have fully borne the punishment of my sins by your sacrifice on the cross, and have paid the full price of those sins for all eternity. Please forgive my sins, change my heart and mind towards you, and make me your disciple, take me with you." God longs for your company and wants to see you blessed, but to make this possible, is your personal decision. Will you not say this prayer now, while you have the time and opportunity to do so - the decision is yours.
