Obedience - to God, or to Man?

We have seen in the previous article that in God’s eyes, man’s obedience to God is the most important and essential thing. No man can please God by his self-devised methods, by doing according to his own will, and through fulfilling any man-made rites, rituals and traditions. If man wants to please God, then he will have to do and behave as God has asked him to do, no way else. No matter how excellent, godly, religious, good and commendable by human understanding anything may be, but if it is not in accordance with God’s instructions and will, it will never be acceptable or pleasing to God; it is utterly vain for this purpose. This basic principle is applicable just the same in Christian living, ministry, and in the appropriate use of gifts of the Holy Spirit in the Christian ministry. Therefore, it is very important and essential that Christian Believers engaged in ministry know and understand that they cannot please God by doing whatever seems right and appropriate to them in the name of the Lord; no matter how commendable, beneficial for others, and godly or religious such things may seem to them and others. Never forget the lesson of 1 Chronicles 17:1-4 - David and Nathan’s desire to build God’s Temple.

The Lord Jesus showed the importance of this obedience through the example of His own life, and taught the same to His disciples. The Lord Jesus’s coming to earth to prepare the way of forgiveness of sins and salvation of all of mankind was in God’s will, and to fulfill all that had been written about Him in God’s Word (Hebrews 10:5-7; 1 Corinthians 15:1-4; Luke 24:44; John 5:39). During His earthly ministry, the Lord Jesus made it very clear that He does not work according to His own will, but according to the will of Him who has sent Him, as God the Father instructs Him, He says and does the same things (John 4:34; 5:19, 30; 6:38; 8:28). That is why, putting the life of the Lord Jesus as an example, it is written for the Christian Believers, “Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name” (Philippians 2:5-9).

During the days of the Lord Jesus’s earthly ministry, the religious leaders, the people learned in the Scriptures, and the officials of God’s Temple, they had made many alterations in their expositions and interpretations of God’s Word and given it meanings and implications according to their own understanding, which had made it very convenient and beneficial for these religious leaders to follow. They used to teach these improvisations that they had done to the common people, and used to emphasize upon the people to do whatever they would tell the people, leaving the study and interpretation of God’s Word to them. Today too, in the observance of the Christian religion a similar situation is seen. The people of the congregation do that which the leaders and elders of their sect or denomination tell them to do. Even today, personally learning and understanding the Word of God is not considered important by most “Christians”; rather, they trust what their leaders and elders preach, teach, and tell them to do. They forget that each and every one of us will be judged according to the Word of God (John 5:45-46; 12:48), and not according to the teachings of their sects and denominations. Eventually everyone will have to give an account of their life to the Lord Jesus, and be evaluated on the basis of what the Lord Jesus has taught; at that time these elders and leaders whom they had blindly trusted, will also be standing to give an account of their wrong interpretations, false preaching and teaching, and misleading the people.

The Lord Jesus severely admonished the religious leaders of His time for this behavior, called them hypocrites, and reminded them of what Isaiah had written, “Hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy about you, saying: 'These people draw near to Me with their mouth, And honor Me with their lips, But their heart is far from Me. And in vain they worship Me, Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men'” (Matthew 15:7-9). On hearing this when the disciples of the Lord told Him that the religious leaders did not like what He said to them at all, the Lord responded by saying the nothing of what those religious teachers falsely taught will remain, they and their teachings, everything will be destroyed, “Then His disciples came and said to Him, "Do You know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this saying?" But He answered and said, "Every plant which My heavenly Father has not planted will be uprooted” (Matthew 15:12-13). That is why we see that in His Sermon on the Mount, the Lord Jesus repeatedly said to His followers “you have heard” and then correcting that teaching He told them the correct form “but I tell you that” - the Lord was teaching them not to go by man-made and taught teachings, but to learn and obey the right things, the right teachings, from God’s Word. Today, to teach God’s Word to us, and to help us understand and apply it in our lives, live by it, the Lord has given His Holy Spirit to us, who resides in the Christian Believer always (John 14:16, 26; 16:13, 14). If we do not properly utilize this excellent provision made available to us by God, and willingly keep following wrong teachings and man-made doctrines, then who but we ourselves will be responsible for the harm we will eventually have to suffer for it all?

If you are a Christian Believer, then it is mandatory for you to spend time in reading, studying and learning God’s Word. Only then will you be able to carry out your Christian Ministry properly, be effective in it, and be pleasing to God; God the Father and the Lord dwell with those who love, honor, and obey His Word (John 14:21, 23). Give it a very serious thought, if it was necessary for the Lord Jesus to stay separate from the wrong teachings and doctrines of the religious leaders of His time, and expose their wrongs, even at the cost of incurring their opposition and wrath; if it was necessary for Him to live a life obedient to the Word of God, fully surrendered to God the Father, then how much more important doing the same is for us today - actually it has been commanded for us to do so (1 Corinthians 11:1). Therefore, for being able to properly use your spiritual gifts, be obedient not to men, but to God.

If you are still thinking of yourself as being a Christian, a child of God, entitled to a place in heaven, because of being born in a particular family and having fulfilled the religious rites and rituals prescribed under your religion or denomination since your childhood, then you too need to come out of your misunderstanding of Biblical facts and start learning, understanding, and living according to what the Word of God says, instead of what any denominational creed says or teaches. Make the necessary corrections in your life now while you have the time and opportunity; lest by the time you realize your mistake, it is too late to do anything about it.

If you are still not Born Again, have not obtained salvation, or have not asked the Lord Jesus for forgiveness for your sins, then you have the opportunity to do so right now. A short prayer said voluntarily with a sincere heart, with heartfelt repentance for your sins, and a fully submissive attitude, “Lord Jesus, I confess that I have disobeyed You, and have knowingly or unknowingly, in mind, in thought, in attitude, and in deeds, committed sins. I believe that you have fully borne the punishment of my sins by your sacrifice on the cross, and have paid the full price of those sins for all eternity. Please forgive my sins, change my heart and mind towards you, and make me your disciple, take me with you." God longs for your company and wants to see you blessed, but to make this possible, is your personal decision. Will you not say this prayer now, while you have the time and opportunity to do so - the decision is yours.
