English Translation

Lord Jesus Christ is the Sole Owner of His Church

We saw in the previous article that in the statement, “...on this rock I will build My church…” said by the Lord Jesus in Matthew 16:18; there are three very important things. Of the three, the first, that the Lord Himself will build His Church, we considered in the previous article, and had seen that the Lord is Himself gathering together those who accept Him as the one and only savior of the world. He has not given this responsibility to anyone else, not even to the angels. Neither man nor Satan can bluff the Lord and bring in their people into the Lord’s Church. Only the truly committed and fully surrendered people of the Lord can remain in His Church. We had seen from the Lord’s parable in Matthew 13:24-30 that although Satan attempts to infiltrate his people into the Lord’s Church, but the Lord knows and recognizes them from the very beginning, and keeps exposing and weeding them out from time to time, for their eventual eternal destruction. From this parable, we also learn about the great filtration and separation that will happen at the end time, in which the people of the Lord and the wicked ones infiltrated by Satan will be separated and segregated, and the people of Satan will go with Satan to their eternal destruction, although they had continued to enjoy the goodness and care of the Lord while on earth. In this parable we also see the love and involvement of the Lord, particularly in verse 28 and 29; the owner of the field, i.e., God, allowed the bad seed or the tares to grow with the good seed or the wheat, and allowed the tares to use His resources and care, they were not pulled out and cast away before the harvest time, so that in attempts to weed them out, the good seed plants may not be harmed in any manner. Even a little bit of harm to His people is not acceptable to the Lord.

In this sentence of Matthew 16:18, the second thing is that it is the Lord who is the owner of His Church, He addresses it as ‘My Church.’ The true Church is being built by the Lord, and only He is the sole owner of the Church; the Lord has not left the ownership of His Church in anyone else’s hands. We see in the New Testament texts, that the various Churches located in different places, have all been addressed as “The Church of God” or by some similar phrase (Acts 20:28; 1 Corinthians 1:2; 2 Corinthians 1:1; Galatians 1:13; 1 Timothy 3:5, 15; etc.); in some texts the Church has also been addressed by the name of the place where the people of the Lord were located (Colossians 4:16; 1 Thessalonians 1:1; 2 Thessalonians 1:1; Revelation 2:1; etc.). But never, at any place, any Church at any location, has ever been addressed by the name of the Elder of that Church, nor has the name of the apostle or preacher who labored in that place to bring people to the Lord, been given to the Church. When people in the Church tried to make groups or factions amongst themselves based on the name of a preacher, or apostle, or an elder, immediately the Holy Spirit severely rebuked them for doing this, and had the attempts terminated (1 Corinthians 1:12-13); in this example of the Church in Corinth, take note of the fact that the Corinthian Believers were not trying to establish separate Churches after their Elders or leaders. The Church or the Assembly remained the same, only different groups were being formed within that one Church; but even this was not accepted and tolerated in the Church of the Lord. The attempt at calling and recognizing the Christian Believers by any other person’s name was immediately curbed and put away.

In Matthew 25, the Lord Jesus has given some parables about His second coming; one of these is in verses 14-30, where a man going to a distant country called his servants and gave them all parts of his wealth, and on returning he asked for an account from each one, how the servant had used the wealth entrusted to him, and gave them rewards according to their utilizing what had been entrusted to them. Now, take note, the servants were chosen by the owner, and which servant was to given what was also decided by the owner, and he gave his wealth only for a limited period of time, he did not disown or give away the wealth, and then on returning he took an account from everyone. In accordance with this, it is written regarding the Church of the Lord Jesus in Ephesians 4:11-12 “And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ.” It is very clear that these responsibilities are “appointments” given by the Lord, a work assigned to be done for a certain period of time; they are not inheritances or ownership rights given out by the Lord. Also mentioned here is the purpose for these appointments - for the edification and growth of the Church, and for Christian Ministry.

That is why the Apostles, Paul in Acts 20:28, and Peter in 1 Peter 5:1-4, exhort the Elders of the Church to diligently and very carefully carry out and fulfill their responsibilities. We can read and learn from another parable of the Lord, from Matthew 24:45-51, related to the second coming of the Lord, what will be the consequences and end of the servant who was careless and negligent about his assigned responsibilities; assuming them to be a kind of ownership instead of a responsibility. Even in the Old Testament, similarly severe chastisement and punishment has been spoken against the careless and negligent shepherds of God’s people - Israel; Ezekiel 34 is a good example of this. The implication is that the Lord God is the owner of His Church and does not tolerate any interference in His ownership or negligence in fulfilling assigned responsibilities. He takes His ownership very seriously, takes full care and keeps a complete account of it. The Lord appoints His people according to their abilities for the taking care of the functions of His Church, and does not accept or overlook the slightest carelessness. Anyone who is careless towards, and mistreats His people, His Church, will have to pay a heavy price and face serious consequences; such a servant will never escape lightly for his carelessness.

If you are a Christian Believer; especially, if you have been given any Church related responsibilities mentioned in Ephesians 4:11 and 1 Corinthian 12:28, or like them, then it is humble request that you please read and always keep in mind Ezekiel 34 and Matthew 24:45-51; it would be good for you to read these two passages at least once every day. Being a Christian Believer, examine yourself, see, and ensure that you are fulfilling your responsibilities diligently to please the Lord, instead of working to please and satisfy some person, Elder, or official; and are functioning under the lordship of the Lord Jesus, and not the lordship of a denomination or organization. God the Holy Spirit had Paul write about his ministry, “For do I now persuade men, or God? Or do I seek to please men? For if I still pleased men, I would not be a bondservant of Christ” (Galatians 1:10). Where are you standing according to this admonition from the Lord?

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord Jesus, then to ensure your eternal life and heavenly rewards, take a decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now. Wherever there is surrender and obedience towards the Lord Jesus, the Lord’s blessings and safety are also there. If you are still not Born Again, have not obtained salvation, or have not asked the Lord Jesus for forgiveness for your sins, then you have the opportunity to do so right now. A short prayer said voluntarily with a sincere heart, with heartfelt repentance for your sins, and a fully submissive attitude, “Lord Jesus, I confess that I have disobeyed You, and have knowingly or unknowingly, in mind, in thought, in attitude, and in deeds, committed sins. I believe that you have fully borne the punishment of my sins by your sacrifice on the cross, and have paid the full price of those sins for all eternity. Please forgive my sins, change my heart and mind towards you, and make me your disciple, take me with you." God longs for your company and wants to see you blessed, but to make this possible, is your personal decision. Will you not say this prayer now, while you have the time and opportunity to do so - the decision is yours.
