हाथ रखना – 3

यह बाइबल में हाथ रखने के द्वारा, परमेश्वर के निर्देश के अनुसार किसी के विधिवत नियुक्त किए जाने का पहला उदाहरण है। किन्तु परमेश्वर ने केवल इसी तरीके से अपने लोगों के अगुवों को नियुक्त नहीं करवाया। हम आगे चलकर देखते हैं कि परमेश्वर ने शमूएल को, शाऊल को राजा होने के लिए, उसके सिर पर तेल डालकर अभिषेक करने के लिए कहा (1 शमूएल 10:1); इसी प्रकार से दाऊद के सिर पर भी पर भी तेल डालकर उसे राजा होने के लिए अभिषेक किया गया (1 शमूएल 16:1, 13); येहू को भी इसी प्रकार से अभिषेक किया गया (2 राजाओं 9:2-3), आदि।

Laying on of Hands - 3
We are studying the fourth of the six elementary principles given in Hebrews 6:1-2, i.e., “laying of hands” as this phrase occurs in the English NKJV translation of the Bible. There is a general perception amongst Christians that the phrase “laying of hands,” or “laying on of hands” is to be used in one particular sense, that of the Elders of the Church laying on of hands on the newly baptized Believers, as is practiced in some sects and denominations. But as we trace the occurrence of this phrase in the Bible, we see that it has been used with some different meanings; the proper, applicable meaning is determined by the context and the usage of this phrase. In the preceding two articles on this topic, we have seen that the first use of this phrase “laying of hands,” or “laying on of hands” in the Bible is with the implication of causing harm, which is also seen at many other places, e.g., Nehemiah 13:21 and 8 times in the book of Esther. Then we saw that the second use of this phrase is to convey transferring of sins, or of responsibility on to another, as we saw from the books of Leviticus and Numbers. Today we will see a third usage of this phrase that of ordaining or commissioning someone for a particular mission, service, or ministry.
It is written in Numbers 27:18 “And the Lord said to Moses: "Take Joshua the son of Nun with you, a man in whom is the Spirit, and lay your hand on him;” in Numbers 27:23 “And he laid his hands on him and inaugurated him, just as the Lord commanded by the hand of Moses” and in Deuteronomy 34:9 “Now Joshua the son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom, for Moses had laid his hands on him; so the children of Israel heeded him, and did as the Lord had commanded Moses.” These three references are about Moses, under God’s direction, ordaining Joshua to be the next leader of Israel after Moses; and the people of Israel subjecting themselves to the leadership of Joshua after Moses had finished his time on earth. Moses was instructed by God to ordain Joshua as the next leader of Israel by laying of hands (Numbers 27:18); Moses did this ordination of Joshua in this manner (Numbers 27:23); and the people of Israel accepted Joshua as their God ordained leader without any contentions, and listened to him; moreover, Joshua was filled with the Spirit of Wisdom because he had been ordained in the God given manner (Deuteronomy 34:9).
This is the first occurrence in the Bible of ordination of a person by the laying on of hands, under God’s instructions. But this is not the only manner in which God had the leaders of His people ordained; later on, we see that God asked Samuel to ordain Saul to be King by pouring oil on him (1 Samuel 10:1); similarly, David to be King by pouring oil on him (1 Samuel 16:1, 13); Jehu to be King by pouring oil on him (2 Kings 9:2-3), etc.
In the New Testament also we see people being ordained or commissioned for some responsibilities or for being sent on some mission by laying of hands on them. It says in Acts 6:3-6 “Therefore, brethren, seek out from among you seven men of good reputation, full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business; but we will give ourselves continually to prayer and to the ministry of the word. And the saying pleased the whole multitude. And they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and the Holy Spirit, and Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas, a proselyte from Antioch, whom they set before the apostles; and when they had prayed, they laid hands on them;” in Acts 13:3 “Then, having fasted and prayed, and laid hands on them, they sent them away;” and in 1 Timothy 4:14 “Do not neglect the gift that is in you, which was given to you by prophecy with the laying on of the hands of the eldership.” Acts 6:3-6 is about seven men being appointed by the elders in Jerusalem to look after the day-to-day functioning and care of the growing Church in Jerusalem; and the Apostles in Jerusalem ordained seven men for this service by praying and laying hands on them. Then, Acts 13:3 (see verses 2 to 4) is about the Holy Spirit calling Paul (then known as Saul), and Barnabas for being sent out for gospel ministry. And 1 Timothy 4:14 is Paul reminding Timothy of his being consecrated and ordained for ministry by the laying of hands by the elders; and therefore, he should be diligent about this responsibility that has been entrusted to him.
So, here we see from the Word of God the third sense in which this phrase “laying of hands,” or “laying on of hands” has been used – to ordain or commission for some God assigned responsibility. We will continue our study on the use of this phrase, as it occurs in different senses in the English NKJV Bible.
If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Repenting of your sins, and asking the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely, surrendering yourself to Him - is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. You only have to say a short but sincere prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ willingly and with a penitent heart, and at the same time completely commit and submit your life to Him. You can also make this prayer and submission in words something like, “Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sins and repent of them. I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself, paying for them through your life. Because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, and you rose again from the grave on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God and have freely provided to me the forgiveness, and redemption from my sins, through faith in you. Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.
