“बपतिस्मे” की समझ / Understanding “Baptism” - 1

***********************************************************

From today we are starting a new series. With God's grace and guidance, we will consider another subject that is much used but little understood, from His eternally established in heaven, unalterable Word. There are many misconceptions and erroneous teachings found in Christian society about this topic. And these erroneous teachings are caused by misinterpretation of God's Word and because of taking words or phrases from God’s Word out of their context. As is commonly seen with other erroneous teachings found in Christian society, the same incorrect attitude is also seen for the doctrinal teachings and practical application of this topic too. Rather than understand and obey God's Word and its teachings, people have more trust in following what is being preached and taught in their denominations or sects. They don't want to offend the religious leaders and important people of their sects and denominations or community leaders; even if God is displeased; but men should not be displeased!

Starting today, we will begin to learn from the Scriptures about "Baptism." When looking at and understanding what the Scriptures say about baptism, please take note that there is neither mention nor example of practicing baptism of infants and children anywhere in the Scriptures. And a consideration of things related to baptism in the Scriptures also reveal that the practice of baptism of infants or children is neither possible by adhering to God’s Word, nor has it ever been done.

Meaning of the word, and understanding “Baptism”

The word for baptism in Greek, the original language of the writings of the New Testament, is “baptizo”; and it means "to be immersed in a liquid, or to be completely soaked from inside and outside with the liquid one is being immersed into". This word is used to convey ‘to dip into a liquid’; e.g., if we say in the context of our language today, for drawing water from a well by filling a bucket, it will be said "Baptizo the bucket into the well". The words ‘wash’ and ‘washing’ in Mark 7:4 is also a translation of the words baptizo and baptismos.

In the books of the New Testament, the same word is used for Christians to be baptized or receive water baptism in the sense of their being immersed. Although nowhere in the Bible is the Greek word for baptism translated "to dip into" or "to immerse", but wherever it is used to refer to baptism, it is with the meaning of immersion in water. Nowhere is there any mention of baptizing infants or children by sprinkling water, or making a mark on children's heads or foreheads, with a finger dipped in water, and calling it "baptism." Also, another very important point is that baptism in the Bible has always been given to adults, that too only when they voluntarily asked for it, came forward to receive it. It is common sense that infants and toddlers cannot naturally be baptized by immersion in water. So as indicated by the use of the word baptizo, baptism has never been of infants and children, but always of adults.

We will see some Bible verses in this context:

  • Matthew 3:6 - “and were baptized by him in the Jordan, confessing their sins” The people themselves came and were baptized in the Jordan River by John the Baptist.

  • Matthew 3:16 “When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him”; Mark 1:10 “And immediately, coming up from the water, He saw the heavens parting and the Spirit descending upon Him like a dove” - The Lord Jesus came up out of the water, after His baptism.

  • John 3:23 “Now John also was baptizing in Aenon near Salim, because there was much water there. And they came and were baptized” - John used to baptize in a place of much water. (Why would he need a lot of water if baptism was just by sprinkling the water?)

  • Acts 8:36-39 “36 Now as they went down the road, they came to some water. And the eunuch said, "See, here is water. What hinders me from being baptized?" 37 Then Philip said, "If you believe with all your heart, you may." And he answered and said, "I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God." 38 So he commanded the chariot to stand still. And both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water, and he baptized him. 39 Now when they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught Philip away, so that the eunuch saw him no more; and he went on his way rejoicing.” - The eunuch saw a location with plenty of water and expressed his desire to be baptized (verse 36), he would have been carrying enough drinking water to sprinkle, but not enough to be immersed into. Verse 38 - The eunuch and Philip went into the water; Verse 39, He came up out of the water. Why would they need to go into the water, and come up out of it, if baptism was by merely sprinkling of water?

At all places the implication is to go into and come out of water, or, to use a place of much water such as a river, or a reservoir, or pond. There is no mention of baptizing by using the water kept in the house, or by taking water from a well, or by sprinkling water from a small stream. That is, baptism, as that word implies, was given by immersion.

If you are a Christian, it is essential for you to follow the Word of God, not the customs and traditions created by men. Because in the end, you will not be judged by any man, on the basis of any man-made doctrines and teachings, all of which are not only vain (Matthew 15:9) but will also be taken away (Matthew 15:13). But everyone will be judged by the Lord Jesus (Acts 17:30-31), on the basis of His unalterable and firmly established Word (John 12:48). Therefore, it is necessary for you to be pleasing to God, instead of striving to please men; else you will have to suffer the loss of eternal life and eternity. Take a serious account of your life, and whatever things you need to rectify, do it right now, while you have the time and opportunity; procrastinating and postponing it for tomorrow or "later" may be very harmful.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. By asking the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely submit yourself to Him - this is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. You have to say only a short but sincere prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ willingly and sincerely, and at the same time completely commit and submit your life to Him. You can also make this prayer and submission in words something like, “Lord Jesus, I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself for their forgiveness and my redemption from sins. Because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, and you rose again from the grave on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God. Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.
