Understanding "Baptism" - 3

***************************************************************

In our series on understanding baptism based on the teachings of God's Word, we're presently looking at some basic things about baptism. In the last two articles we have seen that baptism was always given to adults, only when having repented of their sins, they voluntarily came to be baptized. Baptism has always been mentioned with going into water and coming out of it, implying that the baptism practiced was only by immersion; which is also the meaning of the original Greek word for "baptism". Baptism does neither makes one righteous, nor a Christian, nor a Believer. To those who have become the disciples of the Lord Jesus, it is the command of the Lord Jesus that they be baptized; and baptism is to publicly acknowledge the internal change that has taken place in the person on becoming a disciple of the Lord Jesus; There is nothing more to baptism, other than this.  In subsequent articles we'll also look at some misconceptions about baptism.

At the same time we have been noting that according to the teachings and examples given in the Bible, the baptism of infants or children has no meaning, no place, no congruency with any of the Biblical teachings about baptism; And there is no example of this in the Bible.

Today we will consider another fundamental question about baptism, with examples and teachings from the Bible, When should baptism be taken or given?

When to Baptize? - On Believing

This question has nothing to do with “baptism” given to infants and children, because neither is that “baptism” actually baptism; Nor do those infants or children have any personal role in taking it. They are brought by their parents to perform a church ritual, and the church officials perform that ceremony, and then all assume that they are "baptized." But there is often confusion in the Lord's Assemblies, in Churches, and among people regarding baptism of adults; an uncertainty as to when one should be baptized. Often the elders of Assemblies, or Churches, and others think that first time they should wait and see the person's life and behavior, and then to baptize him if he “acceptably” appears to be in the faith. Although this sounds quite right from human thinking and perspective, there actually is no example or teaching in Scripture that would support this notion.

John the Baptist immediately baptized all those who sought to be baptized by him after confessing their sins (Matthew 3:6); He did not ask them for any proof of their changed lives. But he forbade the Pharisees and Sadducees who were coming to take baptism as a ritual, without confessing their sins, and asked them to first repent and show that repentance in their lives (Matthew 3:7-9).

In Acts 2, those who were saved by Peter's preaching were immediately baptized (Acts 2:41), without being asked for any proof of their changed lives, or keeping them under observation for some time, and neither was anyone asked to come later and be baptized.

In Acts 8:12-13, Simon the sorcerer, like the others, was baptized with the others; Even though his claim to be a Believer was later not found to be true. But no questions were raised against Philip about baptizing him, nor was it called a hasty decision. Nor is it written or indicated anywhere that by getting baptized Simon received any special authority or blessing.

Paul, then called Saul, and notorious for being a persecutor of churches, was immediately baptized, without being kept under observation or being asked to show any evidence of his changed life (Acts 9:17–18). Even though Ananias, the one who came to him with God's message, had doubts about him (Acts 9:13-15).

The clearest indication of when a Christian should be baptized is probably in the account of the gospel given by Philip to the Eunuch, the minister of the Ethiopian queen, and his baptism (Acts 8:35–38). Here we not only see that baptism was given to him immediately by Philip, but two other things are also written here for our learning.

The first is that the saved or Born-Again person must have a deep desire for it; That is, along with the gospel, there should be teaching about taking baptism after becoming a Christian Believer, so that new believers can learn about it, and obey the Lord. In the above incidence we see that Philip gave him the gospel from the book of the prophet Isaiah. But there is no mention of baptism in Isaiah. So, it apparent that along with the gospel, Philip must have told him the command of the Lord, as per in Matthew 28:19, to be baptised as well. That is why the longing for this came in the Eunuch, and he expressed his desire for it. Hence, the first condition is a person's having a desire for baptism, through understanding the importance of God's command and necessity of obedience to it, and asking for it. God's Holy Spirit will inspire the true believer to have this longing and deep desire to be baptized.

The second is Philip asking him and telling him that if he believes with all his heart, it can happen. Take note that being baptized will not lead to “believing with all your heart”; But whoever believes and confesses with all his heart, he should be baptized. Philip did not ask the Eunuch for any proof of his belief, but simply accepted his word for it.

From this we conclude that whenever the believer considers himself ready to be baptized, and sincerely desires it with a sense of obedience to the Lord, he can be baptized. Therefore, as per the teachings and examples of the Scriptures, there is no need to wait for this, or to ask for any evidence of the sincerity of the claims to believe in the Lord Jesus.

If you are a Christian, it is essential for you to follow the Word of God, not the customs and traditions created by men. Because in the end, you will neither be judged by any man, nor on the basis of any man-made doctrines and teachings, all of which not only are vain (Matthew 15:9) but will also be taken away (Matthew 15:13). But everyone will be judged by the Lord Jesus (Acts 17:30-31), and only on the basis of His unalterable and firmly established Word (John 12:48). Therefore, it is necessary for you to be pleasing to God, instead of striving to please men; else you will have to suffer the loss of eternal life and eternity. Take a serious account of your life, and whatever things you need to rectify, do it right now, while you have the time and opportunity; procrastinating and postponing it for tomorrow or "later" may be very harmful.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Repenting of your sins, and asking the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely, surrendering yourself to Him - is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. You only have to say a short but sincere prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ willingly and with a penitent heart, and at the same time completely commit and submit your life to Him. You can also make this prayer and submission in words something like, “Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sins and repent of them. I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself, paying for them through your life.  Because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, and you rose again from the grave on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God and have freely provided to me the forgiveness, and redemption from my sins, through faith in you. Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.
