Understanding “Church”

Christian life and Ministry can only be understood, properly and worthily fulfilled when one properly and correctly understands the meaning of being a “Christian.” Else Satan will entangle us into many wrong concepts and false notions, unBiblical teachings, and contrived doctrines, through them beguile and mislead us away from God’s ways. Then, under the deception that we are working for God, in a manner acceptable to God, living and doing according to God’s will, we will carry on actually being away from God, and working according to Satan’s devious strategies against us. We have seen in the previous articles that Biblically speaking, to be “Christian” is to be a committed disciple of the Lord Jesus (Acts 11:26). In the literal sense of the word, and as an identity, this is the only and correct meaning of being a “Christian.” It is only according to this meaning or definition that being a “Christian” should be understood and seen, and the responsibilities of a disciple of Christ should be carried out. But along with this, it is necessary to also understand, why the Lord Jesus called out people from the world to be His disciples i.e., “Christians;” why did He give them this honor and responsibility. Through our study on the role of God the Holy Spirit and His Spiritual gifts in Christian life and Ministry we have seen that God has determined some “good work” or the other for each and every one of His people (Ephesians 2:10). The Spiritual gifts that God the Holy Spirit gives to God’s children are according to their God determined works or ministries, to help them carry them out properly and worthily. It is only the Holy Spirit who decides and gives which gifts to give to whom. In the Church or the Assembly of God, every Believer has his own ministry, his own assigned works, and different Spiritual gifts given to them accordingly. Yet, they are all known, recognized, and addressed by one name “Christians.” This means that to be a “Christian” is over and above being known for one’s work, ministry, and gifts; and those who actually are “Christians” are the ones who are given works, ministries, and Spiritual gifts by God. We need to take note of and understand that works, ministries, and Spiritual gifts do not ever make anyone a “Christian”; rather the person’s being a “Christian Believer” brings upon him certain responsibilities, and accordingly, to fulfill His purposes through him God assigns some works, ministries and Spiritual gifts to them, because God has certain expectations from them who are His family, His children. To understand the concept of fulfilling the purposes and expectations of God, it is necessary to understand the concept of the “Church” or “Assembly” of the Lord Jesus Christ.

As we have seen in the previous article, the word “Church” was first used in the Bible by the Lord Jesus in Matthew 16:18 - “And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.” Today, generally speaking, on hearing the word Church, people usually think of a particular building or a particular physical structure, where the followers of the Christian religion gather for their worship, religious ceremonies, feasts, and festivals etc. Often the concept of this building is also associated with a particular shape of the building too. But the word translated as “Church,” in the original Greek language is “ekklesia,” which literally means “the gathering of people”, or, “an assembly of people;” and in Acts 19:32, 39 the word ekklesia has been translated as “assembly.”

In the initial days of the Christian Faith, people would gather in homes and houses (Romans 16:5; 1 Corinthians 16:19; Colossians 4:15; Philemon 1:2), in open places, e.g., a riverside (Acts 16:13), etc. for their worship. In all these instances, the Greek word “ekklesia” has been used to denote the gathering of people for worship. At no place does the use of this word imply or indicate a special building constructed for this purpose. For those initial Christians, the word “ekklesia” simply meant a gathering together for worshipping the Lord God. Therefore, when the Lord Jesus first used this word while talking to Peter, Peter and the disciples would have understood the Lord’s statement “...and I will build my Church” as something like “... and I will gather my people together.” As soon as we place the original meaning of the word into this statement of the Lord and into the other places where “ekklesia” is used, automatically, the very basis of many false notions and wrong concepts, wrong teachings and false doctrines related to the Church gets eliminated, and the vanity, the falsehood of all such contrived, unBiblical teachings becomes apparent, as we will see in the days to come.

In contrast, it is interesting to note that the English word “Church” has actually come from the Greek word “kuriakon” which literally means “the Lord’s House”, i.e., “a place of worship”; and in the original Greek language texts, this word has never been used in the whole of the New Testament. Then how did “Church” come into use in place of “ekklesia”? We will see this when we are considering the various metaphors used for the assembly of the Lord’s disciples. For now, we will only keep in mind that in context of the Christian Faith and its teachings, the Greek word ekklesia has never been used for a physical building or place of worship, nor for any organization of Christians. Rather, in the New Testament, in context of the Christian Faith and teachings, this word has been used with various meanings and implications for a gathering together of the disciples and followers of the Lord Jesus, as we will see in the coming articles.

If you are a Christian Believer, then learn and understand how important it is to see words and teachings as given in the original language. When this basic fact is not kept in mind, it gives Satan an open opportunity to bring in his false teachings and wrong doctrines. Therefore, according to the examples of the Berean and Thessalonian Christian Believers given in the Bible (Acts 17:11; 1 Thessalonians 1:6-8; 5:21), to avoid falling into and propagating wrong teachings, make it a habit to always first cross-check and verify everything from God’s Word, and only then accept and follow it. Do not make the mistake of considering this to be a difficult exercise, or something impossible for the general public to follow and do; these Christian Believers of Berea and Thessalonica were neither scholars of the Scriptures, nor were they students of any Seminary or Bible College. They were all simple, common people like you and me, not much educated either - education was a very limited and rare opportunity in those days. They only had the Old Testament with them, and no expository books and commentaries to explain the Scriptures to them. Being Christian Believers, they were people who had been rejected and cast away by the Scriptural Scholars, the Pharisees, Sadducees, and the Scribes of their times, and could not go to them to ask or clarify or learn anything - which in a way was good, since if they could learn from these Scholars, they would only have learnt wrong things, things against the Lord Jesus and His teachings, and not the actual truths of God’s Word. They were dependent only upon God the Holy Spirit to teach them the Word of God. And, when with a committed and true heart, an honest intention, they spread out their hands to the Holy Spirit to learn God’s Word, then the Holy Spirit not only taught them, but also placed them as an honorable example for us to emulate in the Word of God for eternity.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord Jesus, then to ensure your eternal life and heavenly rewards, take a decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now. Wherever there is surrender and obedience towards the Lord Jesus, the Lord’s blessings and safety are also there. If you are still not Born Again, have not obtained salvation, or have not asked the Lord Jesus for forgiveness for your sins, then you have the opportunity to do so right now. A short prayer said voluntarily with a sincere heart, with heartfelt repentance for your sins, and a fully submissive attitude, “Lord Jesus, I confess that I have disobeyed You, and have knowingly or unknowingly, in mind, in thought, in attitude, and in deeds, committed sins. I believe that you have fully borne the punishment of my sins by your sacrifice on the cross, and have paid the full price of those sins for all eternity. Please forgive my sins, change my heart and mind towards you, and make me your disciple, take me with you." God longs for your company and wants to see you blessed, but to make this possible, is your personal decision. Will you not say this prayer now, while you have the time and opportunity to do so - the decision is yours.
