मसीही जीवन के सात कदम - 3 - बपतिस्मा

अगले लेख में हम यहाँ से आगे बढ़ेंगे और पतरस द्वारा कही गई तीसरी बात - खुद को टेढ़ी और पापी पीढ़ी से अलग करना, पर विचार करेंगे।
यदि आपने प्रभु की शिष्यता को अभी तक स्वीकार नहीं किया है, तो अपने अनन्त जीवन और स्वर्गीय आशीषों को सुनिश्चित करने के लिए अभी प्रभु यीशु के पक्ष में अपना निर्णय कर लीजिए। जहाँ प्रभु की आज्ञाकारिता है, उसके वचन की बातों का आदर और पालन है, वहाँ प्रभु की आशीष और सुरक्षा भी है। प्रभु यीशु से अपने पापों के लिए क्षमा माँगकर, स्वेच्छा से तथा सच्चे मन से अपने आप को उसकी अधीनता में समर्पित कर दीजिए - उद्धार और स्वर्गीय जीवन का यही एकमात्र मार्ग है। आपको स्वेच्छा और सच्चे मन से प्रभु यीशु मसीह से केवल एक छोटी प्रार्थना करनी है, और साथ ही अपना जीवन उसे पूर्णतः समर्पित करना है। आप यह प्रार्थना और समर्पण कुछ इस प्रकार से भी कर सकते हैं, “प्रभु यीशु, मैं अपने पापों के लिए पश्चातापी हूँ, उनके लिए आप से क्षमा माँगता हूँ। मैं आपका धन्यवाद करता हूँ कि आपने मेरे पापों की क्षमा और समाधान के लिए उन पापों को अपने ऊपर लिया, उनके कारण मेरे स्थान पर क्रूस की मृत्यु सही, गाड़े गए, और मेरे उद्धार के लिए आप तीसरे दिन जी भी उठे, और आज जीवित प्रभु परमेश्वर हैं। कृपया मुझे और मेरे पापों को क्षमा करें, मुझे अपनी शरण में लें, और मुझे अपना शिष्य बना लें। मैं अपना जीवन आप के हाथों में समर्पित करता हूँ।” सच्चे और समर्पित मन से की गई आपकी एक प्रार्थना आपके वर्तमान तथा भविष्य को, इस लोक के और परलोक के जीवन को, अनन्तकाल के लिए स्वर्गीय एवं आशीषित बना देगी।

The Seven Steps of Christian Living - 3 - Baptism
In the previous article, we reviewed and briefly stated the principles underlying effective gospel preaching, under the power and guidance of the Holy Spirit. We did this based on Peter’s preaching of the gospel to the devout Jews gathered in Jerusalem to fulfill religious practices, feasts, offerings, in Acts chapter 2. There, we not only saw the essential principles of effective preaching of God’s Word, but also the response that those convicted by God’s Word should have. Then we saw that on the basis of the response of those whose hearts were pricked by God’s Word and the Holy Spirit, Peter asked them to do three things. Those who did those three things got added to the Church of the Lord Jesus, and then these followers of the Lord Jesus continued steadfastly in four more things for their spiritual growth and staying firm in the faith. All of this led to a rapid growth of the Christian Believers and Churches. Of the things spoken by Peter through the Holy Spirit, the first is repentance. We briefly recapitulated about it in the last article, since it has already been considered in detail in the earlier parts of this series. Of the seven things given in Acts 2:38-42, the second of the seven things is Baptism, which also has been considered in detail in the earlier parts of this series, so for now, this topic also we will only briefly recapitulate today.
2. Be Baptized: (Acts 2:38) As is stated by Peter to the Jews here, Baptism follows repentance. This was also the sequence insisted upon by John the Baptist, the man of God who started baptizing people after they repented of their sins and had turned to God, in Matthew 3:6-8. We see from this passage from Matthew that John the Baptist refused to baptize the religious leaders because they had not repented; they only wanted to use baptism as a mere formality to show to others and be pleasing to them. There is something very important to be understood here; that taking baptism does not make anyone righteous or acceptable in the eyes of God; and baptism does not even make them a “christian”. Baptism is only an external expression or witnessing of the change brought within the heart by repentance and acceptance of the Lordship of Jesus. As the Lord Jesus has said in Mark 16:15-16, “And He said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned” it is the one who does not believe, he is damned, not the one who does not get baptized. Implying that though believing and baptism, both are to be preached and taught; but a person is saved by believing in the Lord Jesus, and it is not baptism that saves anybody - the thief on the cross did not get baptized, and yet was promised paradise by the Lord Jesus. Similarly, in Matthew 28:19, the Lord Jesus has said “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” Notice that the Lord’s instructions are to baptize only those who became the disciples of the Lord. And people become disciples of the Lord Jesus by accepting Him as their savior, and repenting of their sins. In other words, baptism does not make anyone a disciple or follower of the Lord; but those who decide to become the disciples or followers of the Lord, they are to take baptism and express their decision to others.
There is this very common misunderstanding prevalent amongst most Christians, that it is baptism that saves. This misunderstanding is based upon the impression that the construction of Peter’s sentence creates in Acts 2:38 “Then Peter said to them, "Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” From this it is generally but wrongly understood that Peter has said that taking baptism is required for the remission of sins and for receiving the Holy Spirit; i.e., for being saved. But actually, what Peter is saying, and is supported by the rest of the Scriptures, is that "for the sake of the forgiveness and remission of sins that you have received from the Lord, you should take baptism." It is the construction of the sentence spoken by Peter, that Satan exploits to create this misunderstanding and confusion. To understand it better, consider the sentence: "let everyone of you be enrolled in the Church for being Christian" - the meaning is obvious - because you are Christian therefore you should enroll yourself in the Church. It would be incorrect to assume that by enrolling in the Church the person will become a Christian. In a similar manner Peter is saying that for the sake of the remission of sins you have received in the name of Jesus Christ, be baptized; and not what is commonly assumed and misunderstood that by being baptized people will receive the remission of sins.
Those who have repented and received the forgiveness of sins from the Lord Jesus, they also receive another gift - the indwelling of the Holy Spirit of God in them permanently. Quite unlike another misconception related to salvation, no one needs to do anything extra or to wait to receive the Holy Spirit as is evident from verses like Acts 19:2; Galatians 3:2; Ephesians 1:13-14; etc. Moreover, there is another related misconception and misinterpretation of God’s Word about “Baptism of the Holy Spirit” and its being a separate or a second experience. Whereas, the Biblical fact is that it is the receiving of the Holy Spirit at the moment of salvation, that has very clearly been referred to in God’s Word as being baptized by the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:4-5; 11:14-17). It is not a separate event or a second experience. This too is a big topic, and this too has been considered in detail earlier in this series along with the topic of Baptism, and in some earlier blog posts as well.
Those who are saved by repentance and forgiveness of sins through the Lord Jesus, become the children of God - John 1:12-13; they become the temples of the Holy Spirit who resides in them - 1 Corinthians 6:19-20, and by obeying the Holy Spirit they escape the lusts of the flesh - Galatians 5:16; Galatians 5:18 and the condemnation of sin - Romans 8:1. These saved or Born-Again children of God are to get baptized as an act of witnessing for their faith in the Lord before the world, and in obedience to the commandments of the Lord.
In the next article we will carry on from here and consider the third thing said by Peter - to separate themselves from the perverse and sinful generation.
If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Repenting of your sins, and asking the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely, surrendering yourself to Him - is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. You only have to say a short but sincere prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ willingly and with a penitent heart, and at the same time completely commit and submit your life to Him. You can also make this prayer and submission in words something like, “Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sins and repent of them. I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself, paying for them through your life. Because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, and you rose again from the grave on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God and have freely provided to me the forgiveness, and redemption from my sins, through faith in you. Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.
