English Translation
Excommunication From the Church – 1
God has made every Born-Again Christian Believer a member of His Church and has placed him in fellowship with His other children since the moment of his salvation. Therefore, every Born-Again Christian Believer is God’s steward in these positions and has the responsibility of functioning in a manner that causes the Church to grow and the other Believers to progress in their spiritual lives. In the previous articles we have seen about the role of the Elders and the fact that every Believer needs discipline; God, through instructions and examples in His Word has shown how this discipline needs to exercised. Sometimes, some stubborn and unrelenting Believer, or someone who has committed some very serious offence, may require a harsher discipline; or, a Church Elder or Pastor may develop irreconcilable differences with some member. Usually, in such situations that Believer is either excluded from the fellowship, or is excommunicated and cast out of the church and fellowship of the Believers, and it may be communicated to other members and other Churches or Assemblies, not to keep any fellowship with such Believer. While this may be the Elder’s, or the Pastor’s personal decision, but what does the Bible have to say for such a situation? Does God’s Word permit such an action to be taken? Are there any God given guidelines and instructions for such punishment to be prescribed?
We see in God’s Word that, to maintain Church discipline, the Lord has given the mechanisms, of how this should be done. The first step is dealing with the situation at a personal level in a spirit of forgiveness with the intention to be reconciled. If there are any mutual differences, or misunderstandings, then the first attempt should be for reconciliation and mutual brotherhood, as is the nature of God, and as the Lord has instructed to His disciples in His Sermon on the Mount, in Matthew 5:23-24. We see from this passage that the Lord is instructing that not the offender, but the offended, i.e., it is the suffering person who has to take the first step, the lead in trying to reach an agreement and for reconciliation with the offender. This shows that the one who has suffered and has been wronged, now he is willing to forgive and be reconciled with the one who has created the problems. Notice that in verse 24 here, the Lord is not saying for the one who has suffered the wrong to go and make the one who has created the problems realize what he has done and how he has caused the suffering; rather, the Lord’s instructions are simple and straightforward – “First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.” This clearly shows that the one who has created problems is to be taken as and treated as a “brother” – a brother in faith, or a brother in the Lord, i.e., a member of one’s family, the family of God, and is to be reconciled with. Reconciliation and forgiveness has to start from here, with the realization and acceptance of this unalterable and irrevocable relationship, that whatever he may have done, he is still my brother, he is still a part of my God given family. In the parable of the Prodigal Son given in Luke 15, the Father uses this perspective to try to make the elder brother come around to being reconciled. With this perspective as the starting point, the Believer has to go to the problem-creator with the intention of getting reconciled; and this can only happen if the Believer is willing to forgive and re-start the relationship.
This is exactly like what the Lord God has done with us, the sinful mankind. We sinned, we disobeyed God, we hurt God, we left Him and went into the world to live a life contrary to what He wants. But it was God, the one who was offended, who made the first move to reconcile us back with Him. It was He who left the glory and majesty he had in heaven, and came down; the offended came down to the offender in humility, to forgive and reconcile us with Himself. Now, that is what He expects us to do as well (Colossians 3:12-13). In teaching His disciples what is commonly known as “The Lord’s Prayer” the Lord had taught them to expect forgiveness from God as they forgive others (Matthew 6:12), and then immediately after the prayer, He reiterated the instruction and told the disciples of the consequences of their being unforgiving (Matthew 6:14-15). The Lord emphasized on being magnanimous in forgiving in His instructions to Peter (Matthew 18:21-22); as well as taught it in His parable of the unforgiving servant (Matthew 18:23-35).
So not exclusion or expulsion, but forgiveness and reconciliation in the spirit of being family and brotherhood should be the first course of action towards the offending Believers. In the next article we will look at the next step, the Lord outlined in Matthew 18:15-17.

Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Repenting of your sins, and asking the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely, surrendering yourself to Him - is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. You only have to say a short but sincere prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ willingly and with a penitent heart, and at the same time completely commit and submit your life to Him. You can also make this prayer and submission in words something like, “Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sins and repent of them. I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself, paying for them through your life. Because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, and you rose again from the grave on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God and have freely provided to me the forgiveness, and redemption from my sins, through faith in you. Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.
