Understanding Baptism - (7) – Holy Spirit Baptism & 1 Corinthians 12:13

In the previous two articles we have seen and understood that being “filled with the Holy Spirit” is not a separate or different experience, nor is it for some select few. We also saw that it is not related to the baptism with the Holy Spirit, nor is it something like it. Today we will consider a Bible verse, a part of which is often misused by those who preach and teach wrong things about the so-called “Baptism of the Holy Spirit”, and we will evaluate their wrong teachings and doctrines through this verse.

The verse for our today’s consideration is 1 Corinthians 12:13 “For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body--whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free--and have all been made to drink into one Spirit”; let us look carefully at what the verse says and ponder over it:

  • Take note, the phrase used in context of baptism here is “by one Spirit”, and not “of the Spirit” - as we have seen earlier through other examples, the Holy Spirit is only the medium into which a Believer is soaked within and without, or baptized; the Holy Spirit does not have His own separate baptism.

  • The second thing, in the Christian Assemblies, different people, coming from different backgrounds, become one people by their coming into faith in the Lord Jesus. In context of this becoming one people, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, Paul while writing to the Christian Believers in Corinth, explains to them the purpose in their being baptized with the Holy Spirit - “we were all baptized into one body--whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free”! It has been written so very clearly over here that the baptism with the Holy Spirit is meant to bring all the Christian Believers into unity, to make them all a part of the one and the same body of the Lord Jesus. In face of this, how can anyone claim that only a select few can receive the baptism with the Holy Spirit? Or, that this baptism is meant to provide some extra power and ability to some to be able to do miraculous works, healings in ministry? Nothing like this, or alluding to anything like this has been written here in this verse. Rather, the Holy Spirit Himself has got it written that through the baptism that the Believers will receive in Him, they will all become part of one body - nothing more, nothing less, nothing other than this one simple straightforward fact. So then, leaving aside this stated purpose, and instead adding other contrived notions and doctrines into this verse and its interpretation, does it not tantamount to adding human thoughts, wisdom, and concepts to God’s Word? Is this not corrupting God’s Word? Is it at all permissible and acceptable? Should true and committed Christian Believers go along with such crafty and deceitful handling of God’s Word (2 Corinthians 4:2)?

  • Consider a third thing written in this verse; it is written “we were all baptized into one body” - God the Holy Spirit has used the past tense in getting this written. The implication is evident, all the Christian Believers (“whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free”) had already received this baptism into the Holy Spirit; it is an accomplished event. Now there is no need to get it repeated or ask for it again; that is vain. Nor is there any instruction given here that the future Christian Believers should also desire this experience and keep striving for it.

Through this verse, once again the doctrinal lies and false teachings of those who preach and teach wrong things related to the Holy Spirit become quite apparent. These people say that Believers should strive to receive “the baptism of the Holy Spirit” and to “be filled with the Holy Spirit” so that they can become more powerful and able to do the ministry. In contrast, the Holy Spirit, in the Word written through His guidance and inspiration, has got it written that the baptism is with, not of the Holy Spirit; and it is meant to unify all the Believers into one body of Christ; nothing else, nothing more. Also, as we have seen earlier, the meaning of “to be filled with the Holy Spirit” is to continually learn from the Holy Spirit who has come to reside in the Believer at the moment of his salvation, remain submitted to Him, and by being obedient to Him to be able to do His works through His strength, wisdom and guidance. Where in the Bible, if anywhere at all, does it say that the purpose of Holy Spirit Baptism or Holy Spirit Filling is to empower the Christian Believer to do miraculous works and healings? These preachers and teachers of wrong teachings and doctrines teach that future Believers too have to strive to receive this baptism and filling; whereas the Holy Spirit has had it written that this baptism and filling has already automatically been given to all Believers without their asking for it or making any extra efforts for it. Now, whose teachings should be accepted as true, eternal, to be believed in and followed - those given by these fallible and full of errors humans, or those given by God the Holy Spirit?

Take note of another thing written in this verse - something directly related to the work of the Holy Spirit in the ministry of a Christian Believer, but something these preachers and teachers of wrong doctrines and teachings never make any mention of. Look at the last sentence of this verse, which says “and have all been made to drink into one Spirit”! Those who so emphatically say and teach so many contrived, imaginary things about God the Holy Spirit, have you ever heard any of them ever say something to the effect “It is essential for us to drink the Holy Spirit; therefore, we should have a thirst for the Holy Spirit, we should learn to develop a thirst for the Holy Spirit”? If they can change “baptism with the Holy Spirit” to “baptism of the Holy Spirit” and then using only a part of this verse as a supporting verse build up so many teachings and doctrines around their own contrived notions, and teach them so emphatically, then why are they silent about this last part “and have all been made to drink into one Spirit” of this verse?

The truth is that this whole verse actually goes contrary to their teachings and doctrines, exposes the fallacy of their teachings. Therefore, they take only a part of this verse “by one Spirit we were all baptized”, out of its context, impose their own meanings and implications upon it, then leaving aside the rest of this verse, lest their falsehood becomes apparent, misuse their misinterpretation to support their self-developed wrong teachings. God has given to us Christian Believers, His Holy Spirit from the moment of our salvation, to guide and to teach us in our Christian life and living through God’s Word, and to empower us for our Christian Ministry to be carried out for His glory. Now it is up to us to properly use God’s provision and become the worthy witnesses of the Lord Jesus.

If you are a Christian Believer, then it is mandatory for you to learn the teachings related to the Holy Spirit from the Word of God, seriously ponder over them, understand them, and obey them. You should learn the truth and accordingly live and behave appropriately and worthily, and should teach only the truth from the Bible. You will have to give an account of everything you say to the Lord Jesus (Matthew 12:36-37). When you have God’s Word in your hand, and the Holy Spirit is there with you to teach you, then how will you be able to answer for yourself for getting deceived by wrong doctrines and false preaching and teachings? How will you justify your giving credibility to the persons, sects, and denominations teaching and preaching wrong things in the name of the Holy Spirit, and being part of their false teachings?

If you are still thinking of yourself as being a Christian, because of being born in a particular family and having fulfilled the religious rites and rituals prescribed under your religion or denomination since your childhood, then you too need to come out of your misunderstanding of Biblical facts and start understanding and living according to what the Word of God says, instead of what any denominational creed says or teaches. Make the necessary corrections in your life now while you have the time and opportunity; lest by the time you realize your mistake, it is too late to do anything about it.

If you are still not Born Again, have not obtained salvation, or have not asked the Lord Jesus for forgiveness for your sins, then you have the opportunity to do so right now. A short prayer said voluntarily with a sincere heart, with heartfelt repentance for your sins, and a fully submissive attitude, “Lord Jesus, I confess that I have disobeyed You, and have knowingly or unknowingly, in mind, in thought, in attitude, and in deeds, committed sins. I believe that you have fully borne the punishment of my sins by your sacrifice on the cross, and have paid the full price of those sins for all eternity. Please forgive my sins, change my heart and mind towards you, and make me your disciple, take me with you." God longs for your company and wants to see you blessed, but to make this possible, is your personal decision. Will you not say this prayer now, while you have the time and opportunity to do so - the decision is yours.
