Users of the Gifts of the Holy Spirit - Helps - Their Necessity

A list of Spiritual gifts for the proper functioning of the Christian Assemblies has been given in 1 Corinthians 12:28. In this list, the first three gifts are related to the Ministry of the Word of God; the next three - miracles, healings, and helps are particularly related to being used for the benefit of other members of the Church, the other Christian Believers, and for the benefit of other people. Two of these three gifts particularly related for the benefit of others, we have already seen in the previous articles. The two gifts that we have seen are those that attract the attention of others towards the person using them, and therefore, he has a very good chance of gaining name, fame, and authority. But we have also seen that if these gifts are not used according to the instructions of God and for His assigned purposes, for spreading the gospel, and if the honor and glory because of the exercising of these gifts is not given to the Lord God, then these gifts and their glory are vain. Today we will see about the third gift in this category, “Helps” - we will see about its necessity today, and about its method in the next article. This is a gift which hardly anyone ever desires or asks God for, in comparison to the other two, even though it has been kept before the gifts of administrations and tongues in this list.

The word in the original Greek language, which has been translated as “Helps” in English, literally means to provide comfort or relief, i.e., to help a person find relief or comfort in their time of sorrows and problems. Everyone is aware of the fact that to provide relief and comfort to others, one has to suffer some discomfort and face problems. But if God has given this responsibility to some of His people, and God the Holy Spirit has given the required strength and ability to do this as a Spiritual gift, then it is very evident that the necessity for this was present in the initial Church, is present today, and will remain. This then implies that in the Christian Assemblies there were, are and will be people who will be in sorrows, problems and discomforts; and in these adverse situations they will need the help of someone who can comfort them, stand with them, encourage them, help them. We have all been through such experiences; and know that even Christian Believers keep passing through different circumstances, good or bad, in their lives off and on. Therefore, the necessity of people with the spiritual gift of “Helps” will always remain in the Christian Assemblies to provide relief and comfort to others.

Recognizing and accepting this fact brings another very important fact before us - the Christian Believers are not untouched by sorrows, problems, and adverse situations. Like the other people, they too have to face all kinds of situations and circumstances in their lives, and pass through them. Under the guidance of God, the Holy Spirit, James wrote, “Elijah was a man with a nature like ours…” (James 5:17); imagine, a prophet of God of the stature of Elijah, went through the same situations and circumstances as anybody else, and his powerful ministry was accomplished by passing through all these situations and circumstances, just as anybody else. Paul wrote, through the Holy Spirit, “Yes, and all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution” (2 Timothy 3:12); and Paul with his companions went around preaching “We must through many tribulations enter the kingdom of God” (Acts 14:22). The life of Paul is testimony to the fact that the Christian Believer’s life is not a life of ease, comfort, luxury, and sitting comfortably while preaching bookish knowledge; rather it is a life of practically living out and demonstrating the gospel and teachings of the Lord Jesus.

In the Christian Ministry done in the will of the Lord, people have to face problems, opposition and suffer, as Paul wrote to Timothy, “But you be watchful in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry” (2 Timothy 4:5). Pain, problems, and sicknesses etc. come upon everyone, at times they are even sent by God (2 Corinthians 12:7-10), and they came upon Paul and Timothy also (2 Corinthians 11:30; Galatians 4:13; 1 Timothy 5:23), and even today everyone in Christian Ministry keeps experiencing them, off and on, at some time or the other.. We see from the examples given in God’s Word that in such times, the Christian Ministers helped each-other, they comforted and encouraged others - they themselves needed the “Helps” or comfort from others, and provided the “Helps” and comfort to others, when the need arose (2 Corinthians 1:3-4; 2:7; 7:13; Ephesians 6:22; Colossians 4:8, 11; 1 Thessalonians 2:11; 3:7; 5:11, 14).

Why is it important for us to know, realize, and acknowledge about pain, sorrows, problems, oppositions, and persecutions being ever-present in the life of Christian Faith? Because those who preach and teach wrong doctrines and false teachings about the Christian Faith, instead of telling and teaching the truth of the gospel, to attract and entice people tell the opposite, they assure the people that if they come into the Christian Faith, all their problems will come to an end, all pains and sorrows will be relieved, life will become convenient and easy-going, etc. - and all of this has no support from the Word of God. If someone comes to be a “Christian” because of this enticement, on facing the reality, it is a very big shock for them. In this situation many people turn away, and start slandering the Christians. Whereas, a true preaching of the Gospel will never hide this fact, but just as the Lord Jesus taught to those who wanted to follow Him (Luke 9:23, 57-62), the people should be clearly told of the price they will have to pay for  becoming followers of the Lord Jesus, and only if they are willing and ready to pay the price, should they take this step.

If you are a Christian Believer, and are involved in Christian Ministry and Gospel preaching, then keep in mind to never ever, in the name of the Holy Spirit, who is “the Spirit of Truth” (John 16:13), use any false assurances and untruths to preach the gospel, the message of forgiveness of sins and salvation through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, who is “the way, the truth, and the life” (John 14:6). Never preach anything false under any pressure or compulsion, but always preach the truth through the power of The Truth, because the Lord Jesus has said, “you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (John 8:32). The world suffering under the pains and problems of sin, and even the Christian Believers facing opposition, problem, and sorrows need a “Help”, someone who can comfort and encourage them, give them some relief from their pains and problems. But the preaching and teaching of The Truth can never be done through false assurances and untruths, because The Truth can never be associated with, and nor can the Lord ever accept or affirm and go along with anything false or untrue.

If you are still thinking of yourself as being a Christian, a child of God, entitled to a place in heaven, because of being born in a particular family and having fulfilled the religious rites and rituals prescribed under your religion or denomination since your childhood, then you too need to come out of your misunderstanding of Biblical facts and start learning, understanding, and living according to what the Word of God says, instead of what any denominational creed says or teaches. Make the necessary corrections in your life now while you have the time and opportunity; lest by the time you realize your mistake, it is too late to do anything about it.

If you are still not Born Again, have not obtained salvation, or have not asked the Lord Jesus for forgiveness for your sins, then you have the opportunity to do so right now. A short prayer said voluntarily with a sincere heart, with heartfelt repentance for your sins, and a fully submissive attitude, “Lord Jesus, I confess that I have disobeyed You, and have knowingly or unknowingly, in mind, in thought, in attitude, and in deeds, committed sins. I believe that you have fully borne the punishment of my sins by your sacrifice on the cross, and have paid the full price of those sins for all eternity. Please forgive my sins, change my heart and mind towards you, and make me your disciple, take me with you." God longs for your company and wants to see you blessed, but to make this possible, is your personal decision. Will you not say this prayer now, while you have the time and opportunity to do so - the decision is yours.
