Understanding Baptism - (5) – Holy Spirit

Baptism “Filling”?

Another wrong notion that is preached and taught about “Baptism of the Holy Spirit” is that it is a “filling” of the Holy Spirit, as in an extra amount of some material being taken and being used to occupy some empty places; but this too has no support from the Bible.

In general use and conversation, the phrase “to fill” or “to be filled with” have different meanings and implications, and we see the same in God’s Word as well. Let us look at some examples of the use of these phrases from the Bible:

  • One meaning is to occupy an empty space and make its presence felt in that space, i.e., to permeate in that space. One example of this meaning is Mary anointing the feet of Jesus with perfume, and the sweet smell of the perfume filled up or permeated in the whole house (John 12:3). Another example of this meaning is in Matthew 22:10, where at the King’s command, “the wedding hall was filled with guests.

  • Another meaning is to come under the control of an emotion or a situation, and do something while in that state of being overwhelmed by that emotion or situation; e.g.:

    • People getting filled up with rage or anger and trying to harm the Lord Jesus and His disciples  (Luke 4:28-29; 6:11; Acts 5:17; 13:45).

    • Being overwhelmed with dismay and fear on seeing miracles (Luke 5:26; Acts 3:10).

    • Becoming overjoyed and overwhelmed with an emotion (Acts 13:52).

In the Bible, in context of the functioning of the Holy Spirit, these phrases have also been used with the following meaning:

  • To receive the Holy Spirit for the first time (Acts 9:17).

  • The doing of miraculous and extra-ordinary works through the power of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:4; 4:8, 31; 13:9-11).

Besides these uses, the phrases “to fill” or “to be filled with” have also been used with other meanings, as they are used in common day-to-day use in general conversation. But, in context of our topic of discussion, nowhere in the Bible have these phrases ever been used to mean or even remotely indicate the receiving the “Baptism of the Holy Spirit” - which is the meaning ascribed to these phrases by the preachers and teachers of wrong doctrines about the Holy Spirt. The common usage in the Bible of these phrases is to show being overwhelmed with or coming under the control of some emotion or power and then doing something extra-ordinary or wonderful under that effect. Therefore, we can safely surmise that the meaning of “being filled with the Holy Spirit” is to be imbued with the power of God the Holy Spirit, and to carry out some work under the control of the Holy Spirit.

In support of their arguments, the preachers and teachers of wrong doctrines often use Ephesians 5:18 “And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit” to claim that the Bible teaches and asks to be filled with the Holy Spirit. But if we step out of the influence of the emphatically and repeatedly stated wrong teachings about the Holy Spirit, and look at this verse with a general, straightforward understanding, and that too in its actual context, then it becomes apparent that there is nothing perplexing in this verse. There is a simple and straightforward meaning to this sentence; here the ability of wine to take control of a person has been used as an example to illustrate another truth, about the Holy Spirit. To understand what Paul has written here under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, this verse can be paraphrased as follows: “Just as a person ‘filled’ with wine, through his drunken and wayward behavior shows that he is under the effect and control of the wine in him, in a similar manner a Christian Believer should demonstrate his being ‘filled’ with and being under the control of the Holy Spirit through his spiritual behavior and works”; and then from verse 19-21 Paul talks about the expected behavior and life of a person ‘filled’ with the Holy Spirit.

Another thing to be noted in this sentence is that Paul has said “... be filled ...” in the present continuous tense; i.e., this has to be a regular, continual process, and not something to be done off and on; meaning always and continually remain under the influence and control of the Holy Spirit for everything in your life. This statement neither implies, nor can be can be taken to mean that the Christian Believer will have to keep on receiving portions of the Holy Spirit to top up and remain ‘filled’. It also does not mean that the Holy Spirit keeps leaking out of a person and he needs to keep filling up to make up for the leak. None of this can ever happen, or be accepted, since as we have seen before, the Holy Spirit is God, a person of the Holy Trinity, and He can neither be divided not broken into bits and pieces, nor given to anyone in parts, and cannot in any way be increased or decreased in quantity or quality in anyone. He is always present just the same in every Christian Believer. Since this is the absolute truth and fact of the Scripture, therefore, the only thing possible is that as soon as the person comes to faith in Christ Jesus and is saved, he receives the Holy Spirit, and is also “filled” with the Holy Spirit at that very moment as well.

This also affirmed from the incidence of the disciples receiving the Holy Spirit, in Acts 2:3-4 “Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance” - when the Holy Spirit descended on those disciples waiting to receive the Holy Spirit, it is written that their receiving the Holy Spirit was the same as their being ‘filled with the Holy Spirit.’ They never had to make any separate efforts to receive the ‘filling with the Holy Spirit’; all of those who were present there, were simultaneously and in like manner filled with the Holy Spirit, nobody was filled different or more or less than any other. The Lord had made it clear in Acts 1:4, 5, 8 that receiving the Holy Spirit is the same as being baptized by the Holy Spirit; and here God’s Word also makes it clear that the coming of the Holy Spirit into the Believer and his being ‘filled’ with the Holy Spirit are one and the same thing. Once the Holy Spirit comes into a person, He comes in His fullness, and there is nothing more or different about Him that can be given or received on some other occasion. He will always remain in the Christian Believer in His fullness, just the same as at the time of coming into him. Therefore, now, the person has to demonstrate through his life and behavior, through practical living under the influence and guidance of the Holy Spirit, the presence and power of the Holy Spirit within him.

Hence, in comparison to any other person, if the works and power of the Holy Spirit is any different from someone else, it cannot ever be due to any difference in quality or quantity of the Holy Spirit - because this difference is just not possible. This difference is only due to the submission and obedience people have towards the Holy Spirit in their lives, and in the manner they live and show their being guided by the Holy Spirit in their lives. These differences in submission, obedience, works, and living under the guidance of the Holy Spirit are not indicative of differences in quantity or quality of the Holy Spirit within them. Those who use these differences to teach about differences in quantity and quality of the Holy Spirit in persons, and then build their own wrong doctrines based on this, show and prove by doing this that they simply do not know or understand the basic Biblical truths about the Holy Spirit. We will look into some more details about these differences in the next article, to understand it better.

If you are a Christian Believer, then it is mandatory for you to learn the teachings related to the Holy Spirit from the Word of God, seriously ponder over them, understand them, and obey them. You should learn the truth and accordingly live and behave appropriately and worthily, and should teach only the truth from the Bible. You will have to give an account of everything you say to the Lord Jesus (Matthew 12:36-37). When you have God’s Word in your hand, and the Holy Spirit is there with you to teach you, then how will you be able to answer for yourself for getting deceived by wrong doctrines and false preaching and teachings? How will you justify your giving credibility to the persons, sects, and denominations teaching and preaching wrong things in the name of the Holy Spirit, and being part of their false teachings?

If you are still thinking of yourself as being a Christian, because of being born in a particular family and having fulfilled the religious rites and rituals prescribed under your religion or denomination since your childhood, then you too need to come out of your misunderstanding of Biblical facts and start understanding and living according to what the Word of God says, instead of what any denominational creed says or teaches. Make the necessary corrections in your life now while you have the time and opportunity; lest by the time you realize your mistake, it is too late to do anything about it.

If you are still not Born Again, have not obtained salvation, or have not asked the Lord Jesus for forgiveness for your sins, then you have the opportunity to do so right now. A short prayer said voluntarily with a sincere heart, with heartfelt repentance for your sins, and a fully submissive attitude, “Lord Jesus, I confess that I have disobeyed You, and have knowingly or unknowingly, in mind, in thought, in attitude, and in deeds, committed sins. I believe that you have fully borne the punishment of my sins by your sacrifice on the cross, and have paid the full price of those sins for all eternity. Please forgive my sins, change my heart and mind towards you, and make me your disciple, take me with you." God longs for your company and wants to see you blessed, but to make this possible, is your personal decision. Will you not say this prayer now, while you have the time and opportunity to do so - the decision is yours.
