परमेश्वर का वचन बाइबल हमें सिखाती है कि परमेश्वर के लोगों की आत्मिक बढ़ोतरी और परिपक्वता उनके द्वारा परमेश्वर के सम्पूर्ण वचन में बढ़ने, उसका पालन करने, और उसे अपने जीवनों में लागू करने पर निर्भर है। जब भी, किसी भी कारण से, यदि परमेश्वर के लोगों ने ऐसा नहीं किया है तो हमेशा ही वे परमेश्वर से दूर हुए हैं, और अनेकों तरह की समस्याओं में फंस गए हैं। दूसरी ओर, उनका इन समस्याओं से बाहर निकलना हमेशा ही इस स्थिति के सुधारे जाने, अर्थात हमेशा ही परमेश्वर के वचन को सीखने, पालन करने, और अपने जीवनों में लागू करने पर ही निर्भर रहा है।
इस श्रृंखला में, हम तीन प्रकार की मौलिक शिक्षाओं के बारे में सीख रहे हैं जिन्हें प्रत्येक मसीही विश्वासी को सीखना और जानना चाहिए, ताकि वे परमेश्वर के वचन में उसकी बढ़ोतरी और परिपक्वता के लिए नींव के समान हो सकें। हम इन तीन में से एक प्रकार की शिक्षाओं, सुसमाचार से सम्बन्धित शिक्षाओं के बारे में देख चुके हैं। वर्तमान में हम दूसरी प्रकार की शिक्षाओं, आरंभिक बातों के बारे में इब्रानियों 6:1-2 से देख रहे हैं, जहाँ पर छः प्रकार की आरंभिक शिक्षाएँ दी गई हैं। हम अभी इन छः में से पहली आरंभिक शिक्षा – मरे हुए कामों से मन फिराने, अर्थात उन धार्मिक और भले प्रतीत होने वाले कामों के बारे में, जो चाहे कितनी भी भक्ति, लगन, और ईमानदारी से किए गए हों, किन्तु मसीही विश्वासी के जीवन में कोई आत्मिक बढ़ोतरी या परिपक्वता नहीं लाते हैं, के बारे में विचार कर रहे हैं। वास्तव में ये शैतानी युक्तियाँ होती हैं जो विश्वासियों को व्यर्थ और निष्फल बातों में फँसाए रखती हैं, ताकि वे परमेश्वर और उसके वचन से दूर बने रहें। अभी तक हमने इस प्रकार के कार्यों के कुछ उदाहरण बाइबल से देखे हैं। अभी तक जो हमने देखा है वह इन कामों की सम्पूर्ण सूची नहीं है, किन्तु केवल यह दिखाने और समझाने के लिए कुछ उदाहरण हैं कि मरे हुए काम, जिन से मन फिराना है, क्या होते हैं; साथ ही यह भी सीख सकें कि शैतान कितनी चालाकी और चुपके से मसीही विश्वासियों को धार्मिक, भक्तिपूर्ण, और भले प्रतीत होने वाले, किन्तु वास्तव में व्यर्थ और निष्फल कामों में फँसा देता है। जब विश्वासी उस में निवास करने वाली पवित्र आत्मा की अधीनता और मार्गदर्शन में परमेश्वर के वचन को पढ़ने और अध्ययन करने में समय बिताते हैं, तब वे परमेश्वर के वचन से ऐसे अन्य व्यर्थ कामों को पहचानने और समझने भी लगते हैं। आज हम एक अन्य प्रकार के मरे हुए काम के उदाहरण को देखेंगे, मसीही विश्वासियों के मनुष्यों को प्रसन्न करने वाले हो जाना, बजाए प्रभु, उसके वचन, और मसीही अनुशासन के प्रति खरे बने रहने के।
गलतियों 2:11-16 में हम प्रेरित पौलुस द्वारा अन्ताकिया में आए हुए प्रेरित पतरस को डाँट लगाने की घटना दर्ज पाते है। प्रेरित पौलुस (शाऊल) और बरनबास भी वहीं अन्ताकिया में रहते और सेवकाई करते थे (प्रेरितों 13:1), और वह नगर अन्यजातियों की कलीसिया का एक प्रमुख केंद्र था। इसी नगर में मसीह यीशु के अनुयायी सब से पहले मसीही कहलाए थे (प्रेरितों 11:28)। यह कलीसिया के इतिहास का वह समय था जब यहूदी मसीही विश्वासियों और अन्यजातियों से बने मसीही विश्वासियों में तनाव बना हुआ था। ऐतिहासिक दृष्टिकोण से यहूदी अपने आप को उच्च समझते थे और अन्यजातियों के साथ मेल-जोल रखने को अनुचित मानते थे (प्रेरितों 10:25-29); और उनके मसीही विश्वासी होने के बाद भी उनकी यह मानसिकता हटी नहीं थी, जैसा कि गलतियों 2:12 से प्रकट है। अन्ताकिया में रहते हुए, आरम्भ में पतरस को कोई समस्या नहीं थी, वह अन्यजातियों में से मसीही बने लोगों के साथ रहता और खाता-पीता था। लेकिन उसके वहाँ रहने के दौरान, कुछ और लोग यरूशलेम से अन्ताकिया आए, जिन्हें यरूशलेम की कलीसिया के एक अगुवे और प्रभु के भाई याकूब ने (गलतियों 1:19; 2:9) ने भेजा था। जब यरूशलेम से ये लोग अन्ताकिया आए तो पतरस ने तुरन्त अपना व्यवहार बदल कर यह जताना चाहा कि वह अन्यजातियों से मसीही बने लोगों के साथ घुल-मिल नहीं रहा है, उन से अपने उचित दूरी बनाए हुए है, जिससे कि यरूशलेम से कोई उस पर कोई दोष न लगा सके। याकूब और अन्य यहूदी मसीहियों को प्रसन्न करने के लिए पतरस पाखण्ड में पड़ गया; और न केवल पतरस, बल्कि उसके साथ कई और, जिन में बरनबास भी सम्मिलित था, इसी पाखण्ड में पड़ गए (गलतियों 2:13)।
इस से पौलुस बहुत नाराज़ हुआ, और उसने उसके इस पाखंड के लिए पतरस को डाँटा (गलतियों 2:11)। हम गलतियों 2:14 से देखते हैं कि पतरस ने ऐसा इसलिए किया क्योंकि ये विश्वासी “सुसमाचार की सच्चाई पर सीधी चाल नहीं चलते” थे; और पौलुस ने ऐसा सब के सामने किया, सार्वजनिक रीति से किया। पौलुस ऐसा व्यक्ति नहीं था जो किसी के भी द्वारा परमेश्वर के वचन के विरुद्ध किए गए काम को चुपचाप ग्रहण कर ले। साथ ही गलतियों 2:4-5 भी देखिए, जहाँ पर पौलुस, जब वह यरूशलेम में था, तो यरूशलेम की कलीसिया में घुस आए झूठे भाइयों के बिल्कुल भी अधीन नहीं हुआ। पौलुस को इस बात की चिन्ता नहीं थे कि ऐसा करने के लिए उसके बारे में कौन क्या कहेगा या करेगा। उसके लिए अपने प्रभु के प्रति सही और खरा होना, और प्रभु को पसंद आने वाले काम करना सबसे ऊपर था (2 कुरिन्थियों 5:9)। इसी प्रकार से कुरिन्थुस के विश्वासियों के नाम लिखी पत्री में वह उन्हें चेतावनी देता है कि प्रभु की बजाए मनुष्यों के पीछे चलने के जाल में न फंसें (1 कुरिन्थियों 1:11-13; 3:3-6)। यहाँ पर पौलुस मनुष्यों के पीछे चलने के लिए विश्वासियों का बच्चों के समान, शारीरिक, और मनुष्यों की रीति पर (अर्थात, अविश्वासियों के समान, या, मसीही विश्वासियों के विपरीत) चलने वाले होना कहता है; दूसरे शब्दों में, वह व्यक्ति होना जिन में आत्मिक बढ़ोतरी और परिपक्वता नहीं है। यह चेतावनी देने के पीछे कारण है कि कोई भी मनुष्य चाहे कितना भी आत्मिक, भक्त, और ज्ञानवान क्यों न हो, लेकिन वह कभी भी सिद्ध नहीं होता है, उस में कोई न कोई कमी अवश्य होती है, वह कभी शैतान से अधिक सामर्थी नहीं होता है, और उसके शैतान द्वारा बहकाए जाने, और फिर दूसरों को भी उसे गलती में डाल देने की संभावना हमेशा ही बनी रहती है। इसलिए मनुष्यों को प्रसन्न करने के लिए मनुष्यों का अनुसरण करने के परिणाम प्रकट हैं; यदि कोई विश्वासी किसी मनुष्य का अनुसरण करने लगता है, तो फिर अनुसरण करने वाला उस मनुष्य की गलतियों को भी सीख एवं अपना लेगा और उनके साथ समझौता भी कर लेगा, और जाने-अनजाने, स्वयं भी उन्हीं गलतियों को करने लगेगा, नहीं तो कम से कम उनकी अनदेखी करने अथवा उन्हें हल्के में लेकर माफ कर देगा, जिस से उस के अपने आत्मिक जीवन में समझौते आ जाएँगे, जो न केवल उसकी आत्मिक बढ़ोतरी और परिपक्वता में बाधाएँ डालेंगे, बल्कि उसकी आशीषों और अनन्तकालीन प्रतिफलों पर भी प्रतिकूल प्रभाव डालेंगे। यही बरनबास और अन्य यहूदियों ने किया, जब पतरस ने अपना व्यवहार बदल लिया (गलतियों 2:13); और क्योंकि वे मनुष्यों को प्रसन्न करने वाले बन गए थे, इसलिए न तो बरनबास में, और न ही किसी अन्य में सत्य बोलने तथा पतरस को सुधारने का साहस रहा था। वे चुपचाप होकर जो भी पतरस कर रहा था, चाहे वह सही हो अथवा गलत, उसी का अनुसरण करने लग गए। केवल पौलुस, जो मनुष्यों को प्रसन्न करने वाला नहीं था, वरन केवल परमेश्वर को ही प्रसन्न करने के प्रयास में रहता था (2 कुरिन्थियों 5:9), केवल उसी में यह साहस और आत्मिक परिपक्वता थी कि वह पतरस का सामना कर सका, और जो गलती वह कर रहा था तथा उसके पीछे अन्य लोग करने लगे थे, उसे सब के सामने सुधार सका।
इसी पत्री में, इस से पहले भी पौलुस ने एक सुस्पष्ट बात कही थी जो मनुष्यों का अनुसरण करने के प्रति उसके दृष्टिकोण को परिभाषित करती है “अब मैं क्या मनुष्यों को मनाता हूं या परमेश्वर को? क्या मैं मनुष्यों को प्रसन्न करना चाहता हूं? यदि मैं अब तक मनुष्यों को ही प्रसन्न करता रहता, तो मसीह का दास न होता” (गलतियों 1:10)। दूसरे शब्दों में, मनुष्यों का अनुसरण करना, और ‘मसीह का दास’ होना साथ-साथ नहीं हो सकता है, यह बाइबल का कथन है। एक विश्वासी या तो प्रभु के प्रति पूर्णतः समर्पित होगा, पूर्णतः प्रभु ही का आज्ञाकारी होगा, और तब न केवल उस में सही और गलत में फर्क करने की समझ होगी, बल्कि प्रभु और उसके वचन की सच्चाइयों के लिए खड़े होने का साहस भी होगा। अन्यथा, यदि विश्वासी मनुष्यों के पीछे चलने वाला, मनुष्यों को प्रसन्न रखने वाला होगा, तो फिर वह समझौते का जीवन जीएगा, जिस व्यक्ति का वह अनुसरण करता है, उसकी कमियों और गलतियों की अनदेखी करेगा और उन्हें स्वीकार कर लेगा, स्वयं भी अपना लेगा, ताकि जिस को प्रसन्न रखना चाहता है उसे बुरा न लगे – प्रभु को चाहे जैसा भी लगता रहे, कोई बात नहीं। लेकिन ऐसे विश्वासी फिर अपनी आशीषें और अनन्तकालीन प्रतिफलों की भी हानि उठाएंगे, क्योंकि फिर वे भी वही गलतियाँ करेंगे जो वह करता है जिसे वे प्रसन्न रखना चाहते हैं, जिसके पीछे वे हो लिए हैं; और इस प्रकार दोनों ही को अपने अनन्तकालीन प्रतिफलों की हानि उठानी पड़ेगी; मनुष्यों को प्रसन्न रखने के लिए उनका अनुसरण करने की एक बड़ी और अनन्तकालीन कीमत चुकानी पड़ती है। साथ ही, जैसा पौलुस ने 1 कुरिन्थियों 3:3-4 में कहा है और हमने ऊपर देखा भी है, मनुष्यों को प्रसन्न करने के लिए उनका अनुसरण करना, विश्वासी का बच्चों के समान और शारीरिक होने, अर्थात आत्मिक बढ़ोतरी और परिपक्वता की घटी होने, का एक चिह्न है – एक प्रकार के मरे हुए काम है जिस से विश्वासी को मन फिराना है और जिसे त्याग देना है। इसलिए प्रत्येक विश्वासी को, हर कीमत पर, प्रत्येक परिस्थिति में, हमेशा ही केवल प्रभु ही के पीछे चलने वाला, केवल प्रभु ही को प्रसन्न करने वाला, केवल प्रभु और उसके वचन बाइबल का पालन करने वाला होना है, न कि उनके बारे में किसी व्यक्ति की व्याख्याओं और शिक्षाओं का पालन करने वाला।
अगले लेख में हम दूसरी आरंभिक बात, “परमेश्वर पर विश्वास करना” के बारे में देखना आरंभ करेंगे।
यदि आपने प्रभु की शिष्यता को अभी तक स्वीकार नहीं किया है, तो अपने अनन्त जीवन और स्वर्गीय आशीषों को सुनिश्चित करने के लिए अभी प्रभु यीशु के पक्ष में अपना निर्णय कर लीजिए। जहाँ प्रभु की आज्ञाकारिता है, उसके वचन की बातों का आदर और पालन है, वहाँ प्रभु की आशीष और सुरक्षा भी है। प्रभु यीशु से अपने पापों के लिए क्षमा माँगकर, स्वेच्छा से तथा सच्चे मन से अपने आप को उसकी अधीनता में समर्पित कर दीजिए - उद्धार और स्वर्गीय जीवन का यही एकमात्र मार्ग है। आपको स्वेच्छा और सच्चे मन से प्रभु यीशु मसीह से केवल एक छोटी प्रार्थना करनी है, और साथ ही अपना जीवन उसे पूर्णतः समर्पित करना है। आप यह प्रार्थना और समर्पण कुछ इस प्रकार से भी कर सकते हैं, “प्रभु यीशु, मैं अपने पापों के लिए पश्चातापी हूँ, उनके लिए आप से क्षमा माँगता हूँ। मैं आपका धन्यवाद करता हूँ कि आपने मेरे पापों की क्षमा और समाधान के लिए उन पापों को अपने ऊपर लिया, उनके कारण मेरे स्थान पर क्रूस की मृत्यु सही, गाड़े गए, और मेरे उद्धार के लिए आप तीसरे दिन जी भी उठे, और आज जीवित प्रभु परमेश्वर हैं। कृपया मुझे और मेरे पापों को क्षमा करें, मुझे अपनी शरण में लें, और मुझे अपना शिष्य बना लें। मैं अपना जीवन आप के हाथों में समर्पित करता हूँ।” सच्चे और समर्पित मन से की गई आपकी एक प्रार्थना आपके वर्तमान तथा भविष्य को, इस लोक के और परलोक के जीवन को, अनन्तकाल के लिए स्वर्गीय एवं आशीषित बना देगी।

Repentance From Dead Works - 9
God’s Word the Bible teaches that the spiritual growth and maturity of God’s people depends upon their growing and maturing in all of God’s Word, obeying it, and applying it in their lives. Wherever and whenever God’s people have failed or fallen short in doing this, they have always fallen away from God and have got into various kinds of problems. On the other hand, their recovery from troubles has always been the rectification of this situation, i.e., has always been their coming back into learning, following, and obeying God’s Word.
In this series, we are learning about the three fundamental kinds of teachings that every Christian Believer must learn and know, as the foundation for growing and maturing in God’s Word, and being able to apply it in their lives. We have already considered one of these three basic kinds of teachings, i.e., the teachings related to the gospel. Presently we are studying the second kind of these basic teachings, i.e., the elementary principles given in Hebrews 6:1-2. Of the six elementary principles given there, presently we are considering the first one – repentance from dead works; i.e., those seemingly religious and good works that do not cause any growth or maturity in the Christian Believer’s life, no matter how diligently and piously they may be done. Actually, they are satanic ploys to keep the Christian Believers away from God and His Word by keeping the Believers involved in vain and fruitless activities. We have seen Biblical examples of various kinds of such works so far. What we have considered is by no means an exhaustive list of dead works, but is just to serve as an illustration of understanding and identifying what the dead works are; and learning how cleverly and insidiously Satan entangles the Christian Believers in these apparently religious, pious, and good, but actually worthless works. As the Believers spend time reading and studying God’s Word in submission to and under the guidance of the Holy Spirit residing in them, they, in God’s Word the Bible, will come across other examples of such vain works as well. Today we will consider another kind of dead works, that of Christian Believers becoming man-pleasers, instead of remaining true to the Lord, His Word, and their Christian discipline.
In Galatians 2:11-16, is recorded the Apostle Paul’s admonition of the Apostle Peter, who had come to Antioch, a city in Syria. The Apostle Paul (Saul) and Barnabas also lived and ministered (Acts 13:1) in Antioch, and the city was a prominent center of the Gentile Church. It was in this city that the disciples of Christ were first called Christians (Acts 11:28). This was a period in the history of the first Church when there were ongoing problems between the Jewish converts and the Gentile converts to Christianity. Historically, the Jews considered themselves superior to the Gentiles and did not consider it appropriate to mingle with the Gentiles; this mentality persisted in them, despite becoming followers of the Lord Jesus (Acts 10:25-29), and is apparent from Galatians 2:12. While in Antioch, initially Peter had no problems staying and eating with the Gentiles. But while he was there, some more men came from Jerusalem to Antioch, sent by James, one of the leaders of the Church in Jerusalem, and the brother of the Lord Jesus (Galatians 1:19; 2:9). When these men from Jerusalem came, Peter immediately changed his behavior, tried to maintain the impression that he was not mingling the Gentile Believers, was maintain a distance from them, so that none from Jerusalem might fault him. To be pleasing to James and other Jewish Christians, Peter fell into hypocrisy; not only Peter, but along with him many others, including Barnabas, fell into this same hypocrisy (Galatians 2:13).
This really displeased Paul, and he admonished Peter for his hypocrisy (Galatians 2:11). We see from Galatians 2:14 that Paul did this because these Believers “were not straightforward about the truth of the gospel”; and Paul did this publicly, before all others. Paul was not a person to put up with anything not in accordance with the Word of God, from anyone. Also see Galatians 2:4-5, where Paul, while in Jerusalem, openly refuses to submit to false brethren who had infiltrated into the Church in Jerusalem. Paul was not concerned about whatever anyone may think of him, say about him or do to him for this; for him being true to his Lord and doing what pleased the Lord came first (2 Corinthians 5:9). Similarly in his first letter to the Corinthians, he cautions the Corinthian Believers against falling into the trap of following men, instead of the Lord (1 Corinthians 1:11-13; 3:3-6). Here Paul calls being followers of men as being child-like, carnal, and behaving like mere men (i.e., behaving like the unsaved, or, not behaving like Christian Believers), in other words behaving in a manner that demonstrated a lack of spiritual growth and maturity. The reason for this caution is that howsoever spiritual, pious, and knowledgeable a person may be, yet he is never perfect, will always have some short-coming or the other, is never stronger than the devil, and is always prone to being misled by satanic ploys and then also leading others into the same errors. Therefore, the consequences of following men are evident; if any Believer starts following any man, then the follower will also learn and put up with that man’s short-comings and either inadvertently follow them, or at the least tend to overlook and condone them, leading to compromises in his own spiritual life, which not only will hamper his spiritual growth and maturity, but also adversely affect his eternal rewards and blessings. That is what Barnabas and the other Jews did when Peter changed his behavior (Galatians 2:13); and because they had become men-pleasers, therefore neither Barnabas, nor anyone else had the courage to speak the truth and correct Peter. They silently kept following Peter and doing whatever Peter was doing, whether it was right or wrong. Only Paul, who was not a follower of men, was not a man-pleaser, but only cared for being pleasing to God (2 Corinthians 5:9) had the courage and spiritual maturity to stand up to Peter and publicly correct him for the wrong he was doing and leading others into doing.
Earlier in this letter Paul had made a categorical statement that defined his perspective on being followers of men “For do I now persuade men, or God? Or do I seek to please men? For if I still pleased men, I would not be a bondservant of Christ” (Galatians 1:10). In other words, being men-pleasers and being ‘bondservants of Christ,’ i.e., living a life fully submitted and obedient to the Lord, cannot go hand-in-hand, that is a Biblical statement. A Believer can either be fully submitted and obedient to the Lord, and then not only be able to discern the right from the wrong, but also have the courage and conviction to stand up for the Lord, for His Word, and for the truths of the Lord and His Word. Or, else the Believer can be a man-pleaser, and then live a life of compromise, accepting and putting up with the errors and wrong-doings of the person he is following, ignoring and condoning that person’s short-comings, so that that person does not feel offended – however the Lord may feel about it, that does not matter. But then such Believers will also lose their blessings and eternal rewards, since they too will be committing the same or similar errors which the person they follow commits, and so both will end up losing their eternal benefits; being men-pleasers, followers of men always comes at a great eternal price. Moreover, as Paul said to the Corinthian Believers in 1 Corinthians 3:3-4, and we have seen above, being followers of men is a sign of being carnal and child-like; i.e., of lacking spiritual growth and maturity – it is a kind of dead work, that needs to be repented of and cast away. Therefore, every Believer, at all costs, in all circumstances, always needs to be one who wants to please only the Lord, be the follower of only the Lord Jesus and His Word the Bible, and obey only them, instead of obeying some person’s interpretations and teachings about them.
In the next article, we will begin considering the second of the elementary principles, i.e., “faith toward God.”

Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Repenting of your sins, and asking the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely, surrendering yourself to Him - is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. You only have to say a short but sincere prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ willingly and with a penitent heart, and at the same time completely commit and submit your life to Him. You can also make this prayer and submission in words something like, “Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sins and repent of them. I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself, paying for them through your life. Because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, and you rose again from the grave on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God and have freely provided to me the forgiveness, and redemption from my sins, through faith in you. Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.
