Excommunication From the Church – 5

Every Born-Again Christian Believer, being a steward of God for the provisions and privileges God has given him, will eventually also have to give an account to God for his stewardship, and will be rewarded by the Lord accordingly. As steward of the Church and fellowship in which God has placed him, the Believer has to ensure the growth of the Church and spiritual progress of the other Believers in the fellowship. For these to happen, the maintaining of discipline in the Church and fellowship is very important; and for maintaining discipline some harsh measures may also be required at times. Presently, from, Matthew 5:23-24 and Matthew 18:15-17 we have been considering the exclusion and excommunication of a stubborn, unrelenting Believer persisting in maintaining his differences and conflicts with some other Believers or Church leaders, and refusing to listen to anyone for correcting himself.

In the last article we have seen what the Lord Jesus meant when he said for such an errant Believer, “let him be to you like a heathen and a tax collector” and we also saw that no man, whoever he may be in the Church or fellowship, can decide about excommunicating him. It is only the Lord’s decision, and we are to only abide by it, implement it. In the preceding articles we have seen that this whole process of disciplining an errant Believer reflects the love, nature, and behavior of the Lord, and of His being omniscient about everyone - from before their birth to after their death. Analyzing the Lord’s statement in its context and through the practices of the Jewish society of that time, we have seen that the statement does not mean to totally cut-off all contact and relationships with the errant Believer and cast him away from the Church, but minimizing socially mingling with him to make him feel humiliated, ashamed, and isolated, so that he may repent of his wrong doings. Today we will consider this a bit further, and see some other associated points about this.

Once the situation has come to the point when there is no other alternative left, but to separate out such a person, God’s Word also shows that this separation should be moderated. The purpose of the exercise is not to totally cut-off the person and that too permanently, but to bring him to realization and repentance. Bringing the errant back into the Church should always be aimed for through forgiveness and reconciliation, as is the nature of God, and as we have seen earlier also when considering Matthew 5:23-24. This is not just in the New Testament, in this period of grace, but was also seen in the Old Testament, in the period of the Law; please see 2 Samuel 14:1-24. We see here, in the incidence of Absalom and David, how the wise woman from Tekoa talks to King David about a characteristic of God relevant to the situation at hand, “For we will surely die and become like water spilled on the ground, which cannot be gathered up again. Yet God does not take away a life; but He devises means, so that His banished ones are not expelled from Him” (2 Samuel 14:14). Once again, we see that God, the offended one, the one against whom the wrongs have been committed, and the one who is aggrieved party, “He devises means, so that His banished ones are not expelled from Him” – God banished, but God takes the initiative to devise means for the offender to be reconciled with Him.

And Paul, under the Holy Spirit has also said the same in 2 Thessalonians 3:14-15 – “And if anyone does not obey our word in this epistle, note that person and do not keep company with him, that he may be ashamed. Yet do not count him as an enemy, but admonish him as a brother.” God has had it written very clearly in His Word that the purpose of not keeping company with a disobedient Believer is to bring him to shame – what we have been learning above and in the previous articles. Along with this, God’s related instructions for further behavior towards this disobedient person are also clear and important – treat and admonish him as a brother, not as an enemy. Once again emphasizing what we have been seeing in the previous articles that no truly Born-Again Believer, i.e., a member of God’s Church, His family, a part of the Body and Bride of Christ Jesus can ever be absolutely cut-off and cast-off from the Church and fellowship. God does not do it, and no man, despite his standing and reputation in the Church or fellowship, has any authority or permission to do it. Rather, after an appropriate period of time, there should be active efforts, initiated by the offended parties, by the Church, to bring this person back into fellowship and be restored in the Church and fellowship.

We see this again from Paul’s example in 2 Corinthians 2:5-10. It seems, from this passage, that someone in the Corinthian Church had said or done something against Paul, and his actions had not only grieved Paul, but also a good number of people in that Church; and then they on their own had decided to put him away from the fellowship. The text neither suggests that Paul had raised the matter of that man’s being offensive towards him in the Church, nor does it say that Paul asked them to do what they did. They, it seems, had acted on their own in this matter; remember that this was a time when the New Testament had not been written, and people were prone to do things according to their own understanding. Now, when the news of what had been done reached Paul, he acted in the spirit of 2 Samuel 14:14, he devised a way to get the person restored back into the fellowship. Paul tells the Church in Corinth that he has forgiven him and asks them all to also forgive and comfort that person, and restore him back to fellowship. Paul does not order them to do this, he only proposes it to the Church in Corinth, leaving the decision in their hands A very important thing to note from this incidence is that the like excommunication, the restoration too has to be through the Church congregation, done in the will of the Church, and not by the personal decision of an individual. Though Paul, at a personal level, is not holding any grudge against that person, has forgiven him, yet, despite his status and reputation, he still wants the Church to be involved in the forgiveness and restoration of that errant person; instead of imposing his own personal decision upon them.

To summarize, in matters of personal differences and conflicts between the Believers, even if these differences are with the Church leaders, God has instructed in His Word that the offended person has to take the initiative and have the matter resolved in a spirit of forgiveness and reconciliation. If the matter is not resolved at the personal level, it should be tried through meditation of one or two others from the Church; and if even they fail, it should be brought to the notice of the Church congregation, and if the errant Believer refuses to listen to even the Church, only then is he to be separated from the general company and socializing of the community, to make him feel ashamed and repent of his wrongs. But at no point of time, is he to be considered totally and permanently cut-off and cast-away from the Church and fellowship, or an enemy. No man has the authority or permission to put anyone out of the Church and fellowship; it has to be done only through the process given by God. Moreover, the intention should still remain to bring the errant one back into fellowship, and the offended person, in the spirit of forgiveness and reconciliation, ought to devise means to have him restored back into fellowship in the Church.

In the next article, we will see some instructions in God’s Word for Believers to withdraw themselves from certain persons, for some given reasons.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Voluntarily repent of your sins and ask the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins; voluntarily and sincerely surrender yourself to Him - is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. You only have to say a short but sincere prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ willingly and with a penitent heart, and at the same time completely commit and submit your life to Him. You can also make this prayer and submission in words something like, “Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sins and repent of them. I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself, paying for them through your life.  Because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, and you rose again from the grave on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God and have freely provided to me the forgiveness, and redemption from my sins, through faith in you. Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.

Excommunication From the Church – 1

God has made every Born-Again Christian Believer a member of His Church and has placed him in fellowship with His other children since the moment of his salvation. Therefore, every Born-Again Christian Believer is God’s steward for these privileges and has the responsibility of functioning in such a manner that helps the Church to be edified, and the other Believers to grow in their spiritual lives. In the previous articles we have seen about the role of the Elders and the fact that every Believer needs to stay disciplined. Also, God, through instructions and examples given in His Word has shown how this discipline should be exercised. Sometimes, some stubborn and unrelenting Believer, or someone who has committed some very serious offence, may require a harsher discipline. Or, a Church Elder or Pastor may develop irreconcilable differences with some member of the congregation. Usually, in such situations that Believer is either excluded from the fellowship, or is excommunicated and cast out of the church and fellowship of the Believers, and it may also be communicated to other members and other Churches or Assemblies, not to keep any fellowship with such Believer. While this may be the Elder’s, or the Pastor’s personal decision; but, what does the Bible have to say for such a situation? Does God’s Word permit such an action to be taken? Are there any God given guidelines and instructions for such punishment to be prescribed?

We see in God’s Word that, to maintain Church discipline, the Lord has outlined the methods in Matthew 18:15-17 and at other places, how this should be done. The first step is dealing with the situation at a personal level in a spirit of forgiveness with the intention of reconciliation. If there are any mutual differences, or misunderstandings, then the first attempt should be for reconciliation and mutual brotherhood, as is the nature of God, and as the Lord has instructed to His disciples in His Sermon on the Mount, in Matthew 5:23-24. We see from this passage that the Lord is instructing that not the offender, but the offended, i.e., it is the suffering person who has to take the first step, the lead in trying to reach an agreement and for reconciliation with the offender. This shows that the one who has suffered and has been wronged, now he is willing to forgive and be reconciled with the one who has created the problems. Notice that in verse 24 here, the Lord is not saying for the one who has suffered the wrong to go and make the one who has created the problems realize what he has done and how he has caused the suffering. Rather, the Lord’s instructions are simple and straightforward – “First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.” This clearly shows that the one who has created problems is to be taken as and treated as a “brother” – a brother in faith, or a brother in the Lord, i.e., a member of one’s spiritual family, the family of God, and is to be reconciled with. Reconciliation and forgiveness has to start from here, with the realization and acceptance of this unalterable and irrevocable relationship, that whatever he may have done, he is still my spiritual brother, he is still a part of my God given family. In the parable of the Prodigal Son given in Luke 15, the Father uses this perspective to try to make the elder brother come around to being reconciled. With this perspective as the starting point, the Believer has to go to the problem-creator with the intention of getting reconciled; and this can only happen if the Believer is willing to forgive and re-start the relationship.

This is exactly like what the Lord God has done with us, the sinful mankind. We sinned, we disobeyed God, we hurt God, we left Him and went into the world to live a life contrary to what He wants. But it was God, the one who was offended, who made the first move to reconcile us back with Him. It was He who left the glory and majesty He had in heaven, and came down; the offended came down to the offender in humility, to forgive and reconcile us with Himself. Now, that is what He expects us to do as well (Colossians 3:12-13). In teaching His disciples what is commonly known as “The Lord’s Prayer,” the Lord had taught them to expect forgiveness from God as they forgive others (Matthew 6:12); and then immediately after the prayer, He reiterated the instruction and told the disciples of the consequences of their being unforgiving (Matthew 6:14-15). The Lord emphasized on being magnanimous in forgiving, in His instructions to Peter (Matthew 18:21-22); as well as taught it in His parable of the unforgiving servant (Matthew 18:23-35).

So not retribution, demeaning, exclusion, or expulsion, but forgiveness and reconciliation in the spirit of being family and brotherhood should be the first course of action towards the offending Believers. In the next article we will look at the next step, the Lord outlined in Matthew 18:15-17.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Voluntarily repent of your sins and ask the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely surrendering yourself to Him - is the only way to salvation and heavenly life.

Laws Demands - 2

In the previous article we had seen the demand of the law, that it is mandatory to obey it in its entirety, one mistake, one error renders everything else vain (Galatians 3:10; James 2:10). We had also seen that it is impossible for man to fulfil this demand (Acts 15:10); no man has ever been able to do so. This impossible demand is associated with another limitation, that the Law is incapable of restoring man back into fellowship with God.

It is a Biblical fact that as soon as a person repents of sins, receives the forgiveness of sins from the Lord Jesus, accepts as Jesus as Lord, and submits his life to Him, from that very moment his body becomes the temple of God's Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 3:16; 6:19); and the Holy Spirit comes in to reside in him (Ephesians 1:13). It was in this context that God the Holy Spirit put a question to the Galatian Christians through the apostle Paul (Galatians 3:1-5), since they had begun to deviate toward the observance of the Law. The question was, "This only I want to learn from you: Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?" (Galatians 3:2); "Therefore He who supplies the Spirit to you and works miracles among you, does He do it by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?" (Galatians 3:5). Through Paul, the Holy Spirit asked that though you have received the Holy Spirit because of believing the gospel of faith; it is by obeying that gospel of faith that you have been accepted and re-established into fellowship with God, and He has started residing in you, with you; so why are you now deviating from the faith and going to the Law? Despite knowing very well that your fellowship with God cannot be restored by keeping the Law?

The question that the Holy Spirit posed to the Galatian Christians, the same question is equally valid for us today; especially for those who want to be justified in the sight of God by observing the "law" of customs, rules & regulations, traditions, festivals, etc. Paul wrote clearly, "But that no one is justified by the law in the sight of God is evident, for "the just shall live by faith" (Galatians 3:11). So, for now, if you are wanting to justify yourself by observing any sort of "law" — whether that of God, or of your religion, creed, community, or denomination — and are trying to make yourself acceptable to God through the works of the flesh; then pay heed and understand that God's Word clearly states, that you become righteous and acceptable to God, are reconciled with Him, not by keeping the Law, but only by following the God given path of repentance and submission to the Lord (Romans 5:1, 11). Therefore, while you have the time and the opportunity, take the right decision, decide on the right path, and leave the useless and fruitless path.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Repenting of your sins, and asking the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely, surrendering yourself to Him - is the only way to salvation and heavenly life.

Growth through God’s Word /

The Elementary Principles – 62

Laying on of Hands - 10

In the previous article, we recapitulated the meanings and implications of laying on of hands, and extending hands towards someone, from the Biblical as well as social behavioral context. We also looked at the way the Jews at the time of the first Church thought about the people of the world, and categorized them. Then we considered an often ignored or hardly ever realized implication of receiving the Holy Spirit from God, that it affirms the recipient’s being a child of God, a part of His family, and a member of the one universal indivisible Church of the Lord Jesus, a part of Lord’s Bride and Body. All of these are essential for us to keep in mind when analyzing and understanding the three verses from the book of Acts that are misused to support the misinterpretation that the Holy Spirit is given by placing of hands by Apostles or a Church Elder, i.e., Acts 8:17; 9:17; 19:6.

The Lord Jesus, during His ministry on earth, had demonstrated His care and concern for all people, whether Jews, amongst whom He primarily ministered; or, the Gentiles, from whom also He not only healed but also commended some for their faith in Him (Matthew 8:5-13; 15:22-28); or, the Samaritans, whom also He interacted with, healed, and shared the gospel with; e.g., of the group of ten lepers He healed one was a Samaritan (Luke 17:12-16), through the Samaritan woman at the well he shared the gospel to the whole village of the Samaritans (John 4), and used a Samaritan as the primary character in one of His well known parables (Luke 10:30-37); and the followers of John the Baptist, who were amongst the Lord’s initial followers (John 1:35-42; Matthew 4:18-20), and were even named amongst the twelve Apostles chosen by Him. In His Great Commission, before His ascension, He had clearly stated that His disciples were to go all over the world, to every people, with the good news of salvation (Matthew 28:19; Mark 16:15; Luke 24:47; Acts 1:8) without any differentiation or reservation. So, the Lord Jesus had made it very clear to His disciples and others, that His way of looking at people was not the same as the Jews, generally speaking, used to look at and categorized people. The Lord Jesus did not differentiate between the Jews and the others, nor did He ignored the disciples of John the Baptist. But still, this Jewish tendency of differentiating and categorizing the people, that we have seen above, continued to persist in the minds of even His disciples.

Had this continued in the same manner, the Church could never have been the one universal Church, the one Bride and Body of Christ it was meant to be, but would have disintegrated into groups and sects based on ethnic background and geography. The first differentiation that the Lord God removed from the minds of the Apostles and Church Elders was the differentiation between the Jews and Samaritans, we will see about this in the next article. The second differentiation that was removed was between the Jews and the Gentiles, which we will consider today. Please read Acts chapters 10 and 11, to understand this. The happenings of these two chapters, briefly stated, are that the Apostle Peter was shown a vision and sent by God to the home of a devout Gentile Centurion named Cornelius. Peter initially was unwilling, but was convinced by God to go (Acts 10:9-24). Even then, on reaching the house of Cornelius, despite being very honorably received (Acts 10:25-26), Peter stated his reservation about coming to a Gentile’s home quite bluntly (Acts 10:28). But still, he was respectfully received, and given the opportunity to preach the gospel to Cornelieus and his household (Acts 10:30-33). Peter shared about the Lord Jesus with them, and hearing God’s Word those present in the house of Cornelius believed in the Lord Jesus, which was affirmed by their receiving the Holy Spirit, and then Peter commanded them to be baptized (Acts 10:44-48).

But Peter’s going to a Gentile’s house and preaching there upset the other Elders of the Church in Jerusalem, and they asked for an explanation from Peter about it (Acts 11:1-3). Then Peter recounted the whole episode to them (Acts 11:4-17), and made it clear that he had gone there under the instructions of the Holy Spirit (Acts 11:12). On hearing the whole incidence, the Apostles and Elders in Jerusalem accepted the salvation of Gentiles, and acknowledged that their being made a part of the Church of the Lord Jesus was a part of God’s plan (Acts 11:18).

Notice some very important things here: Peter was initially unwilling to go to the house of Cornelius, and let alone giving the Holy Spirit, he did not even want to give them the gospel; but eventually Peter went there under the directions of the Holy Spirit. Peter never went with the intention of making sure that he would ensure that those Gentiles too receive the Holy Spirit. There, the Holy Spirit was given to those Gentiles, the household of Cornelius, quite suddenly and unexpectedly, without Peter’s asking for this to happen, and Peter was as surprised on seeing them receive the Holy Spirit, as was anyone else. Peter acknowledged that the Gentiles receiving the Holy Spirit was not something that he had done but was God’s gift to them (Acts 11:16). But take special note of what Peter says in Acts 11:17 “If therefore God gave them the same gift as He gave us when we believed on the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I that I could withstand God?” In Peter’s own words, the disciples, including the Apostles, and those Gentiles, both received the Holy Spirit when they believed on the Lord Jesus. In other words, the receiving of the Holy Spirit by the Gentiles was an affirmation by God of their believing, and His accepting them as His children, as members of the one universal Church, as part of the Bride and Body of the Lord Jesus. And then the other Apostles and Elders also acknowledged this, affirmed this, accepted them (Acts 11:18). Since they openly and publicly received the Holy Spirit, no one was left in any doubt about God’s accepting the Gentiles into His family, and this opened the way for the Gentiles to be accepted into the Church. So now, the Jews and the Gentiles were reconciled, united, and made one in the Church of the Lord Jesus; and in this reconciliation and unification the receiving of the Holy Spirit openly and publicly by the Gentiles had a major role to play.

In the next article we will see about the acceptance and reconciliation of the Samaritans; and then of the others, i.e., the followers of John the Baptist.
