The Elementary Principles – 65

Laying on of Hands - 13

In our on-going study on “Laying on of Hands,” the fourth of the six elementary principles given in Hebrew 6:1-2, in the previous article we had concluded our deliberations on the false teaching and wrong doctrine that some sects and denominations preach and teach on the basis of Acts 8:17; 9:17; 19:6 – that the Holy Spirit is given by the laying on of hands of the Apostles or Church Elders. We had considered various related Biblical things, and then considered these three verses in light of those related things, to understand how the laying on of hands mentioned in these three verses was not for the sake of giving the Holy Spirit, but to express unity, solidarity, and acceptance into the Church of people who were marginalized by the Jews of those times. Their acceptance into the family of God, into the Church was affirmed by God by the giving of the Holy Spirit to them, thereby making them equal to everyone else in the family of God and Church of the Lord Jesus, with no differentiation of any kind from anyone else. This was necessary to maintain the Church as one, universal, indivisible unit, instead of its getting broken into sects based on ethnic and cultural backgrounds and other criteria.

At the beginning of our study on “Laying on of Hands” and in between, it was stated that for some sects and denominations, all that this term means is the concluding activity of baptizing a Born-Again Christian Believer; i.e., after baptism, the Church Elders place their hands on the baptized person, pray for him, and that concludes the baptismal process. If you ask them why this is done; what is its significance; all they can say is because the Bible teaches it to be done, therefore, we do it in obedience to God’s Word. But where does the Bible teach this to be done? Their answer is a small portion of the same passage that we are studying; they quote a portion from Hebrews 6:2 “the doctrine of baptisms, of laying of hands” and claim that here God has put it in His Word that baptism has to be followed by the laying on of hands. But if this was true then why don’t the other two things, i.e., “resurrection from the dead, and of eternal life” mentioned in this verse also follow in the same quick succession? Why does the logic have to apply to only two things mentioned in this verse, and not to the others? They have no answer to that. As we have seen in the earlier articles on these six elementary principles given in Hebrews 6:1-2, these are six different principles that the Christian Believers are to learn about from God’s Word, to have a firm, unshakeable foundation against the wiles of the devil. These are not six activities that Christians have to carry out in the given sequence to justify them before God.

Do other portions of God’s Word support this argument that since in Hebrews 6:2, the laying on of hands is mentioned after baptisms, therefore, every baptism should be followed by the Elders of the Church laying their hands on the baptized person? As we study the various instances of baptisms given in God’s Word, except for one instance, of Paul laying hands on the followers of John the Baptist, after they became Believers in the Lord Jesus and were baptized (Acts 19:1-6), nowhere else has the laying on of hands after baptism ever been carried out. And, as we have seen in the previous article, the laying on of hands by Paul on those Believers, was an expression of unity, solidarity, and their acceptance into the family of God, into the Church of the Lord Jesus. By laying his hands on them, Paul was not fulfilling any prescribed or contrived baptismal ritual. Let us consider the baptisms mentioned in the Bible, in the sequence they occur:

·        Matthew 3 – John the Baptist baptized the repentant, but there is no mention of laying on of hands on anyone after baptism by him, or any of his followers.

·        John 1 – the Lord Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist, but no one laid hands Him, although Jesus took baptism from John saying “Permit it to be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness” (Matthew 3:15) – if laying on of hands was part of baptism, then why was this ‘righteousness’ not fulfilled for the Lord Jesus as part of ‘fulfilling all righteousness’?

·        John 4:1-2 – The Lord Jesus’s disciples baptized in the knowledge of the Lord, but there is no mention of any laying on of hands on anyone, nor of the Lord objecting why it was not being done by them.

·        Matthew 28:19-20 – in the Great Commission, here and elsewhere, although the Lord does say that the new Believers are to be baptized, but nowhere did the Lord ask for laying on of hands was to be done after the baptism.

·        Acts 2:41-42 – From the devout Jews assembled in Jerusalem for the feast, on hearing Peter’s sermon, about three thousand repented and were baptized, and then “they continued steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers” but there is no mention of any laying on of hands for them.

·        Acts 8:1-17 – Through the ministry of Philip amongst them, the Samaritans believed in the Lord, and were baptized; but no laying on of hands on them immediately after baptism has been mentioned. It was much later, when Peter and John came from Jerusalem, that they laid hands upon them. And as we have recently seen, this was to express unity and solidarity with them, and to accept them into the one universal Church of God, into the family of God. The laying on of hands on them by Peter and John was not to complete any baptismal requirement that had been neglected by Philip.

·        Acts 8:36-39 – Through the ministry of Philip, the Ethiopian Eunuch is converted, takes baptism, but there is no laying on of hands on him after his baptism.

·        Acts 9:17-18 – The Apostle Paul, then known as ‘Saul the Pharisee’ is converted after meeting the Lord Jesus on the road to Damascus. In these verses, as we have seen in the last article, Ananias sent to him by God, comes, lays hands on him to express unity and solidarity with them, and to accept him into the one universal Church of God, into the family of God; and then Saul is baptized. There is no mention of any laying on of hands upon him once again, after his baptism.

·        1 Corinthians 1:13-17 – Paul, teaching about baptism, never mentions any teaching related to the laying on of hands practiced by him or others.

·        In other important passages mentioning baptism, e.g. Ephesians 4:5; Colossians 2:12; 1 Peter 3:21; etc., nowhere has laying on of hands been mentioned along with baptism.

So, the Biblical message is quite evident and unambiguous – laying on of hands to be done after baptisms is not an established Biblical doctrine, and Hebrews 6:2 is not teaching that baptism should be followed by the laying on of hands by the Elders of the Church.

As we have seen the previous articles, the laying on of hands also conveys unity and solidarity, accepting the person into fellowship, standing with a person, and it can also be done to comfort and console someone going through troubling times. For conveying either or all of these meanings, if after baptism, the Elders lay their hands on the baptized person, there is nothing wrong in doing so. But then, it should be something done in sincerity, not to fulfill a ritual, or any supposed ‘baptismal requirement’ – which it is not. It should not be said or taught that laying on of hands after baptism is a Biblical teaching and doctrine.

Through this series on this elementary principle, we have seen and learnt many things from God’s Word the Bible; implying that the Laying on of hands in the Bible is not something trivial or inconsequential; rather it has many important meanings and implications, and the Christian Believers should be aware of them. From the next article we will begin considering the fifth of the six elementary principles, i.e., “resurrection of the dead.”

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Repenting of your sins, and asking the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely, surrendering yourself to Him - is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. You only have to say a short but sincere prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ willingly and with a penitent heart, and at the same time completely commit and submit your life to Him. You can also make this prayer and submission in words something like, “Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sins and repent of them. I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself, paying for them through your life.  Because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, and you rose again from the grave on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God and have freely provided to me the forgiveness, and redemption from my sins, through faith in you. Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.

The Elementary Principles – 63

Laying on of Hands - 11

In the previous article, we have seen from Acts chapters 10 and 11 that the Holy Spirit was given to the Gentiles who believed (Acts 11:17), it was given spontaneously, in the will of the Lord God, openly. The giving of the Holy Spirit in this manner served to affirm to the Apostles and Elders in the Church at Jerusalem, that it was in God’s will that the Gentiles should also be joined to the family of God as His children, be members of the one, universal, indivisible Church of the Lord Jesus, be a part of the Lord’s Bride and Body; and because of this the Apostles and Elders in Jerusalem accepted the Gentile Believers into the Church (Acts 11:18). It was the practice in the initial Church that the matters related to the Church were deliberated upon and decided under the guidance of God by the Apostles and Elders of the Jerusalem Church, and all controversial matters were brought to them for knowing the right thing to do (Acts 15:1-6; Galatians 2:1-2). What the Apostles and Elders in Jerusalem decided through prayer, deliberations, and God’s guidance (Acts 15:28), was then conveyed to the other churches and was accepted by everyone as the standard practice for all the Churches (Acts 15:23-31; 16:4). Therefore, it was essential that the Church in Jerusalem accept this inclusion of the Gentile Believers into the Church. Their acceptance served to break down the barriers between the Jewish and the Gentile Believers, and brought them to live together as one in the Church of the Lord.

Today we will consider one of the three verses from the book of Acts which we have been referring to, i.e., Acts 8:17. On the basis of these three verses (Acts 8:17; 9:17; 19:6), some sects and denominations preach and teach a false teaching, a wrong doctrine, that the Holy Spirit is given by the laying on of hands by the Apostles or the Church Elders। Whereas the Bible clearly teaches that the Holy Spirit is received by the Born-Again Christian Believer at the moment of his salvation, i.e., his repenting of sins, believing in the Lord Jesus as his savior, and submitting his life to the Lord, as we have seen in the paragraph above, and from other Bible verses in the preceding articles. The giving of the Holy Spirit is not by any human efforts of any kind by the Believer, or by anyone else for him. In our study of “laying on of hands,” the fourth of the six elementary principles given in Hebrews 6:1-2, over the past few articles we have been building a background for correctly interpreting and understanding these three verses from Acts. We have seen from Biblical examples, as well as examples from our day-to-day life that by placing hands on someone, we also convey a feeling of unity, of solidarity with that person, as well as assuring him of our standing with him, and comforting him for anything that may be disturbing him.

As we have seen in the earlier articles, the Jews did not mingle with the Samaritans. Now in Acts 8 we have Philip ministering among them, and the Samaritans accepting the gospel. It is written in Acts 8:17 “Then they laid hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.” This verse is about the Samaritan Believers receiving the Holy Spirit after the Apostles Peter and John had laid hands on them. Philip the evangelist ministered the gospel, cast out evil spirits, and healed many people in a village of Samaria (Acts 8:5-7), and the people there believed in what Philip preached (Acts 8:11-13). On hearing about this ministry of Philip, the Apostles in the Church at Jerusalem sent Peter and John to see what was happening in Samaria. Having come and seen the results of Philip’s ministry they prayed for these Samaritans who had believed in the Lord to receive the Holy Spirit, and then laid hands on them, and these Samaritans received the Holy Spirit (Acts 8:14-17).  This was done by God to affirm to the Church in Jerusalem that the Samaritans are also the same as others in faith in the Church, and are part of God’s family.

It seems that the giving of the Holy Spirit to these Samaritans, after their coming to faith in the Lord had been held back for a reason. Now, after Philip’s ministry and the works through the Holy Spirit being evident in them, by the Apostles from Jerusalem laying their hands on these Samaritan Believers and thereby conveying their unity and solidarity with them, and God openly pouring out His Holy Spirit upon them, as we have seen about the Gentile Believers in the last article, there was no reason for any doubt left that in accordance with Acts 1:8, the Samaritans too were a part of God’s family and the Lord’s Church. Like for the Gentiles, this too was a ‘one-time’ act; and once this message had been conveyed by God and accepted by the Church in Jerusalem, it was never repeated again. Take note, before laying of hands, Peter and John had prayed for God to give them the Holy Spirit; it was not that the two Apostles took it for granted that on their laying on of hands upon the Samaritans, God would be constrained to grant the Samaritans the Holy Spirit; they were not presumptuous, but were obedient to God. The giving of the Holy Spirit was not because of their laying on of hands, but because of God having accepted the faith of those Samaritans, and was now demonstrating His acceptance of the Samaritans to these Apostles from the Jerusalem Church, so that others too would similarly accept them. In the next article we will consider Acts 9:17 and 19:6

The Elementary Principles – 59

Laying on of Hands - 7

In our on-going study of the six elementary principles given in Hebrews 6:1-2, we are presently considering the fourth one, i.e., “laying on of hands,” in the previous article we have seen that some sects and denominations have misinterpreted some verses from the Bible out of their context and misused them to create a false teaching, a wrong doctrine that the Holy Spirit is given by the laying of hands by the Church Elders. We have also seen that the phrase “laying on of hands” upon a person in context of their being ordained or commissioned and sent for God’s service, and the act extending a hand of fellowship, also implies that the physical act of touching or of placing one’s hand upon another is basically to convey a sense of unity and solidarity with that person, to convey assurance to him of support, and to comfort someone passing through fear or uneasiness. We see this meaning often being enacted out in our day-to-day life, when we embrace or hug someone, or place our hands on their shoulders to convey these meanings of unity, solidarity, assurance, and comfort to them. So, we can see and understand that even in the Biblical usage this laying on of hands, or placing of hands on someone, or extending our hands to someone, essentially conveys to the other person our accepting or acknowledging our unity with that person in Christian fellowship, being concerned about their Christian endeavors, and there being no differentiations or barriers between us and them.

A good illustration of this is the meeting of Ananias with Paul (then called Saul) soon after Paul’s encounter with the Lord Jesus on the road to Damascus. On meeting Paul, Ananias addressed him as “Brother Saul” and laid hands on him, lovingly conveying God’s message to him. Although prior to this, when God had asked Ananias to go and speak to Paul, he had been unwilling and had tried to wriggle out of going and meeting Paul. But when convinced by God, Ananias dropped all his objections and apprehensions about Paul, and went to him with open arms, accepting him into the fellowship of the Believers (Acts 9:10-17). A similar sense is seen in the Apostles laying hands on seven men chosen from amongst them for managing the affairs of the congregation, while the Apostles devoted themselves to prayer and the ministry of God’s Word (Acts 6:1-6). These seven men upon whom the Apostles had laid their hands, were chosen from amongst their congregation, and as per the criteria given by the apostles in Acts 6:3, the seven were already those having a good reputation, filled with the Holy Spirit, and wise, before the Apostles had laid their hands on them; it was not that by the laying of hands on them by the Apostles, these seven men gained something special. So, besides commissioning them for the responsibility, which could just as well have been done by simply by instructing them, praying for them, and committing them into the Lord’ hands for guidance and help, without the laying of hands on them, what did the act of laying of hands on them by the Apostles convey to these seven? In light of the above, these seven would definitely have felt assured that they had the support and backing of the Apostles, for carrying out their responsibilities, and in times of need they could seek their help and guidance without any hesitation. That physical touch of the Apostles hands would have been very reassuring and comforting to them for the work they were being entrusted to do. This understanding of laying on of hands is further affirmed by Paul’s instructions to Timothy “Do not lay hands on anyone hastily, nor share in other people's sins; keep yourself pure” (1 Timothy 5:22). We see from this verse that “laying of hands” on a person conveys the impression of solidarity with them, being party to their deeds, even their sins, because of which inadvertently the servant of God is rendered impure. In other words, the laying of hands on someone implies affirming unity and fellowship with that person, being joined with him, or accepting him as one who is united with the fellowship.

It is very important to realize this implication of expressing solidarity and unity through the use of the phrase “laying on of hands,” and to ponder over it to understand it. In the next part of our study on this subject we will be using this implication for understanding the three verses, i.e., Acts 8:17; 9:17; 19:6 which are misinterpreted and misused to preach and teach the false doctrine that laying of hands is required to receive the Holy Spirit. We will be using this implication and understanding for another very important aspect of the history of the Christian faith, related to these three verses. Realizing and understanding that aspect is also equally important to realize and understand the true meaning of these three verses, and to see how they are misinterpreted and made to say, what they were never meant to say.

It is requested that the readers please go through a previous blog-post on the topic of Receiving the Holy Spirit through this link: https://rozkiroti.blogspot.com/2022/07/blog-post.html since it will help in understanding the subsequent discussion about these three verses from Acts. We will carry on from here in the next article.
