Improper Behavior Towards God’s Word - 5

In the previous article we have seen that God not only wants His people to do what He instructs them to do, but is also equally particular that they do it just the way that He wants them to do it; and not according to their own concepts and fancies. As a practical illustration of this principle, today we begin to look at incidents related to Israel's deliverance from Egypt through Moses. Today we will see about Moses attempting to become the leader of Israel, and later see some other examples as well.

Consider the summary of Israel’s deliverance as stated by Stephen before the Council in Acts 7:22-36. As Stephen recounts this incident, Moses, wanting to express his solidarity and brotherhood with them, had initially gone to the Israelites on his own. There, acting in favor of an Israelite being oppressed by an Egyptian, according to his own understanding Moses even killed the oppressor, and then tried to settle disputes between the Israelites. Probably, his thinking was that because of his royal status and capabilities, the Israelites will accept him as their deliverer from Egyptian slavery. But the Israelites rejected him as their potential deliverer, and he had to run away from Egypt for saving his life. It took another forty years of preparation before God brought him back to Egypt, to deliver Israel from slavery through him.

Though Moses was to be the one through whom God would deliver Israel, yet at that time Moses could not do this according to his desire and by his own methods; rather, in attempting to do so, he jeopardized his life. What Moses was unaware of  was that when he tried to do it on his own, he was still not trained and prepared to carry out this responsibility. God had to train him for another forty years in the wilderness, as a nobody living and working in a very simple manner, as a foreigner dependent upon others. Thereby, God had to break his pride and his royal manner of thinking. Moses had to work with dumb, defenseless sheep, prone to do things their own way without bothering about the consequences. It was only when Moses had learnt patience and developed the heart to care for even dumb animals, that he was sent to deliver Israel.

Also, another thing was that at the time Moses attempted to become their deliverer, God’s determined time for their deliverance had not been completed; and the day this time was completed, God brought them out of Egypt (Genesis 15:13; Exodus 12:40-41). In the incidence of the Burning Bush and associated events (Exodus 4), God had also shown to Moses, that though in his own eyes, and by his own reckoning, he had no qualities and capabilities to deliver Israel from Egypt; but through being obedient to God, he was capable of doing extra-ordinary miracles.

Now, Moses had learnt that for being successful in carrying out this seemingly impossible task, he had nothing of his own by which he could make any claims or even think of accomplishing it; he was totally dependent on God for it. And we know this very well that it was only his unflinching obedience to God, and his complete trust in God for even seemingly impossible things, that was the only thing that made him acceptable to Israel as their leader and deliverer. It was this faith that kept Pharaoh from harming him in any way, although through Moses Egypt had suffered great loss, in the ten plagues he brought upon them (Hebrews 11:24-27).

Having brought them out of Egypt, before leading Israel towards the Promised Land, Canaan, God asked the Israelites to make a covenant with Him, of being obedient to Him (Exodus 19:3-8). After the Israelites agreed to this covenant, God proceeded further, first giving them His Commandments, and then the Law, and then asking them to build the Tabernacle for worshipping Him while they journeyed to Canaan. Take note that the covenant between the Israelites and God was totally dependent on one and only one thing, absolute, unconditional obedience to God.

We will continue considering this Exodus journey of Israel in the next article as well, to continue learning from this illustration that obedience to God means doing the things He has said, and doing them the way He wants them done; and not doing God ordained and instructed things, by methods and rituals contrived by other people, or self.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Repenting of your sins, and asking the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely, surrendering yourself to Him - is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. You only have to say a short but sincere prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ willingly and with a penitent heart, and at the same time completely commit and submit your life to Him. You can also make this prayer and submission in words something like, “Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sins and repent of them. I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself, paying for them through your life.  Because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, and you rose again from the grave on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God and have freely provided to me the forgiveness, and redemption from my sins, through faith in you. Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.

The Holy Communion – 45

English Translation

The Lord’s Table - For Those Obedient to the Lord (1)

Since the last article, we have started studying about the Holy Communion from the New Testament. All the four Gospels give an account of the Lord Jesus’s establishing the Lord’s Table for His disciples, in Matthew 26, Mark 14, Luke 22, and John 13, while celebrating the Passover with them, using the elements of the Passover. In the last article we had seen from Matthew 26:17, how the Holy Communion showed that the disciples of Christ Jesus are one “family”, family as defined by the Lord Jesus in Mark 3:35. As per the Word of God, not anyone or everyone, but it is only this family of God that has the privilege of partaking of the Lord’s Table. Today we will continue with Matthew 26:17 till verse 19, and look at another important teaching related to the Passover and the Holy Communion.

We see in Matthew 26:17 that the disciples came to the Lord with a question, “Where do You want us to prepare for You to eat the Passover?” As we said in the last article, a well-known fact about the disciples of the Lord Jesus is, like the Lord Jesus, they too were all local people, mostly Galileans. Of the twelve disciples, at least four were fishermen, having boats (plural; Luke 5:2) and servants (plural; Mark 1:20) to help them. So, we can surmise that even if they were not very affluent, economically, they were at least in a reasonably good state. Moreover, in response to the disciple’s question, the Lord sent the fishermen Peter and John (Luke 22:8), to go and prepare for the Passover to be observed. But neither Peter, nor John, nor any one of the other disciples assumed and decided that when they and their natural families can do it in their own house, then why should they go elsewhere? We will host the Passover for the Lord Jesus and the rest of the disciples. Peter and John, immediately, as soon as the Lord entrusted the responsibility to them, went, undaunted by the uncertainty of Matthew 26:18 and Luke 22:10-13.

They did not raise any questions or express any doubts, did not offer alternative suggestions, did not feel perplexed at whether or not they will be able to meet the man, or whether the owner of the house would accept the Lord’s statement and give them the room. They just did what was told to them, unhesitatingly, unquestioningly; and then Matthew 26:19 has another statement of obedience “So the disciples did as Jesus had directed them; and they prepared the Passover.” No disagreement, no suggestions or doing anything according to their own ideas, no modification of what the Lord had asked to be done; simple straightforward obedience to the Lord’s command.

Disobedience of God, replacing His instructions with something that seemed more appealing and better than what God had said, doing according to one's own desires instead of following what had been ordered, were the reasons of the first sin, of man falling away from God, into the clutches of the devil. Even today, the most common and most prevalent error in Christianity is replacing God's Word with man-made rules, regulations, and rituals, and then following them, instead of obeying and following original God's Word. Yet, thinking and believing that God will be happy about man's word being given priority and preference over His Word, and will bless those who disobey Him, but obey and follow man and man-made instructions - which actually is vain worship (Matthew 15:9).

In the next article we will see some more about the necessity of this commitment and obedience to the Lord Jesus and Word of God for those who participate in the Holy Communion.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord Jesus, then take a decision in its favor now to secure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. The Lord's security and blessings are present where there is obedience of the Lord, where His Word is honored and followed. If you are still not Born Again, have not obtained salvation, or have not asked the Lord Jesus for forgiveness for your sins, then you have the time and opportunity to do so right now. Ask the Lord Jesus to forgive your sins, and voluntarily and sincerely surrender yourselves into His hands - this is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. All you have to do is say a short prayer, voluntarily and with a sincere heart, with heartfelt repentance for your sins, and a fully submissive attitude. You can do this in this manner, “Lord Jesus, I confess that I have disobeyed You, and have knowingly or unknowingly, in mind, in thought, in attitude, and in deeds, committed sins. I believe that you have fully borne the punishment of my sins by your sacrifice on the cross, and have paid the full price of those sins for all eternity. Please forgive my sins, change my heart and mind towards you, and make me your disciple, take me with you." God longs for your company and wants to see you blessed, but to make this possible, is your personal decision. One prayer said with a sincere and surrendered heart will turn your present and future, your life here on earth and in the next world, forever and make you heavenly and blessed. Will you not say this prayer now, while you have the time and opportunity to do so? The decision is yours.

Growth through God’s Word /

Click Here for the English Translation

The Elementary Principles – 30

Baptisms - 9

The Purpose of Baptism (4) - Conclusion

We have seen in the past three articles that baptism, since its inception, was never a ritual or formality; was never taken or given casually, but was always with a sense of purpose and sincerity. It was always given only after person’s confession of sins and repentance; except for the baptism taken by the Lord Jesus, which, as the Lord Himself said, was done “to fulfil all righteousness,” i.e., for obedience to God. The purposes of baptism can be summarized in three points that we have seen in the preceding articles:

  • Witness - It is meant to be an external, public witnessing of the inner transformation, a changed life, brought about in the person by his confessing and repenting of sins.

  • Preparation - Through taking baptism, the person is conveying to the world that he has placed himself in the hands of the Lord, and is now being prepared by the Lord for the eventual final accounting and judgment that everyone will have to face to receive their final rewards and consequences, for what they have done or left undone in their life, as a follower of Christ.

  • Obedience - Taking baptism is an expression of one’s submission and surrender to God and His Word, of being committed to live in obedience to God - as demonstrated by the baptism of the Lord Jesus. The Lord was sinless and righteous; He did not need any confession and repentance; but still subjected Himself to God’s ordinances, and placed before us His example of obedience to God.

The importance and utility of recognizing and understanding these purposes is in implementing them. As said earlier, at the beginning of this series, just as with the others, baptism too has been reduced to a denominational ritual, a casual formality to be fulfilled to meet the rules and regulations of the denominations, sects, and groups into which Christendom has divided itself. Each of these denominations, sects, and groups insists on baptizing persons according to their own rules and regulations. Through their own contrived rules and regulations, they have all coupled many other things in a person’s life to baptism, so that without being baptized according to their manner, those things that have been coupled also cannot be done for the person. This is quite unlike any such teaching, instruction, or example given in God’s Word the Bible. Such is their commitment and adherence, their fidelity to their own rules and regulations, that to have them fulfilled, they with impunity pay scant respect to the actual teachings of God’s Word, instead they utterly disregard it - all in the name of God!

This is similar to the situation prevailing amongst God’s people the Israelites, before they were severely chastised, sent in to captivity, and dispersed amongst the nations (Isaiah 1:4-20; Jeremiah 7:19; 8:5-9; 22:5-9; 26:4-6; Ezekiel 39:23-24). The Israelites were fulfilling their rituals, feasts, and ceremonies; religious activities were being observed, but God was not happy with them, since godliness was not seen in their lives. They were fulfilling religious formalities, but they were neither witnessing as people of God, nor preparing to be accountable to God and be judged by Him, and obedience to God and His God’s Word had been replaced by obedience to men. When despite several warnings, they refused to mend their ways and conform to God’s Word, God had to deal with them. Much the same situation prevailed at the time of the Lord Jesus’s earthly ministry. The restored and rebuilt temple was there, with all the religious activities, but godliness made evident through witnessing, preparation, and obedience to God was sorely missing. The religious leaders, still did what they had earlier been severely punished for - taught and implemented their own wisdom as ‘word of god’ (Matthew 15:3-9). So abhorrent had the condition become that the Lord had to call the Temple a ‘den of thieves’ (Matthew 21:13); and eventually, the ‘thieves’ of this ‘den’ conspired against the Son of God and had Him caught and killed for speaking out against them, for exposing them for what they actually were. But as the Lord had prophesied (Matthew 24:1-2), because of their stubborn, unchanging attitude within a few years, the Temple was utterly destroyed and the Jews were dispersed to be persecuted all over the world.

For a baptism to be Biblical and acceptable to God, this three-fold purpose of baptism has to be fulfilled - by both, the ones taking and giving it. Anything else, done in whatever manner, or under whichever rules, regulations, and rituals, is not the baptism that the Lord God has given in His Word. Practicing all such unBiblical baptisms, and that too in the name of the Lord, and supposedly in obedience to God’s Word, is knowingly and willfully committing the same offence against God as those Israelites were committing at that time. Therefore, will the eventual consequences be any different? In the days ahead, as we carry on with this study on baptism, the readers should always keep these three purposes in mind, use them as a standard, and to cross-check and verify whatever they are told or they have practiced as “baptism” through them.

Blessed and Successful Life / आशीषित एवं सफल जीवन – 24 – Be Stewards of God’s Word / परमेश्वर के वचन के भण्डारी बनो – 10

Improper Behavior Towards God’s Word – 5

In the previous article we have seen that God not only wants that His people do what He instructs them to do, but is also equally particular that they do it just the way that he wants them to do it; and not according to their own fancies. As a practical illustration of this principle, today we begin to look at Israel’s deliverance from Egypt through Moses, and later see some other examples as well.

Consider the summary of Israel’s deliverance as stated by Stephen before the Council in Acts 7:22-36. As Stephen recounts this incident, Moses, wanting to express brotherhood with them, had initially gone to the Israelites on his own. But the Israelites rejected him as their potential deliverer, and he had to run away for his life from Egypt. It took another forty years of preparation before God brought him back to Egypt, to deliver Israel from slavery through him.

Though Moses was to be the one through whom God would deliver Israel, but at the time Moses could not do this according to his desire and by his methods, rather, in attempting to do so, jeopardized his life. What he did not know was that when he tried to do it on his own, he was still not trained and prepared to accept this responsibility. God had to train him for another forty years in the wilderness, as a nobody, working with dumb, defenseless sheep, prone to do things their own way without bothering about the consequences.

Now, Moses, knowing that for being successful in carrying out this seemingly impossible task, he had nothing of his own by which he could make any claims or even think of accomplishing it; he was totally dependent on God for it. And we know this very well that it was only his unflinching obedience to God, and his completer trust in God for even for seemingly impossible things, that not only made him acceptable to Israel as their leader and deliverer, but also kept Pharaoh from harming him in any way, although through Moses Egypt had suffered great loss.

Having brought them out of Egypt, before leading Israel towards the Promised Land, Canaan, God asked the Israelites to make a covenant with Him, of being obedient to Him (Exodus 19:3-8). After the Israelites agreed to this covenant, God proceeded further, first giving them His Commandments and the Law, and then asking them to build the Tabernacle for worshipping Him while they journeyed to Canaan. Take note that the covenant between the Israelites and God was totally dependent on one and only one thing, absolute, unconditional obedience to God.

We will continue considering this Exodus journey of Israel in the next article as well, to continue learning from this illustration that obedience to God means doing the things He has said, and doing them the way He wants them done.

Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.
