बपतिस्मे की समझ - (2) – आग और पानी से बप्तिस्मा; उद्धार और बप्तिस्मा

पिछले लेख में हमने बपतिस्मे के अर्थ और उससे संबंधित बातों को देखना आरंभ किया था। परमेश्वर पवित्र आत्मा से संबंधित गलत शिक्षाओं का प्रचार और प्रसार करने वाले, मसीही सेवकाई में उपयोगी एवं प्रभावी होने के लिए “पवित्र आत्मा का बपतिस्मा” पाने पर भी बहुत बल देते हैं। इसी संदर्भ में हमने देखा था कि “बपतिस्मा” शब्द का अर्थ क्या है तथा बाइबल की शिक्षाओं के अनुसार बपतिस्मा केवल एक ही है, पानी से दिया गया डूब का बपतिस्मा। यह देखने से पहले कि फिर यह “पवित्र आत्मा का बपतिस्मा” क्या है जिसके विषय बाइबल के आधार पर इतनी बातें की जाती हैं हम बपतिस्मे से संबंधित दो और बातें आज स्पष्ट कर लेते हैं, जो आगे चलकर इस विषय को समझने में हमारी सहायक होंगी।

आग और पानी का बपतिस्मा

मत्ती 3:11 में यूहन्ना द्वारा कही गई बात “वह तुम्हें पवित्र आत्मा और आग से बपतिस्मा देगा” को लेकर भी गलत शिक्षाएं और व्याख्या दी जाती है कि पवित्र आत्मा का बपतिस्मा, आग का बपतिस्मा है। किन्तु वाक्य स्पष्ट है; यूहन्ना यह नहीं कह रहा है कि “वह तुम्हें पवित्र आत्मा अर्थात आग से बपतिस्मा देगा”; वरन उसने कहा कि “वह तुम्हें पवित्र आत्मा और आग से बपतिस्मा देगा” - यानि कि प्रभु के पास दो वस्तुओं से दिए जाने वाले बपतिस्मे हैं - एक तो पवित्र आत्मा से दूसरा आग से। किन्तु जिन्होंने प्रभु यीशु को स्वीकार कर लिया, उस पर विश्वास कर लिया, अर्थात उद्धार पा लिया, उन्हें स्वतः ही, विश्वास करते ही तुरंत पवित्र आत्मा मिल जाएगा, अर्थात पवित्र आत्मा से बपतिस्मा मिल जाएगा। जिन्होंने प्रभु को स्वीकार नहीं किया, उद्धार नहीं पाया, फिर वे अनन्त कल के लिए नरक की आग की झील में डुबोए जाएंगे - उनके लिए फिर प्रभु के पास आग से बपतिस्मा अर्थात कभी न बुझने वाली आग की झील में डाल दिया जाना है (प्रकाशितवाक्य 19:20; 20:10, 14-15)। तो हर एक व्यक्ति को प्रभु के हाथों एक न एक बपतिस्मा, अर्थात एक न एक में डाला जाना मिलेगा - या तो पवित्र आत्मा से; अन्यथा आग से।

साथ ही एक अन्य पद पर भी ध्यान कीजिए: प्रेरितों 2:3 में लिखा है, “और उन्हें आग की सी जीभें फटती हुई दिखाई दीं; और उन में से हर एक पर आ ठहरीं”; किन्तु इस घटना - आग की जीभों का आकर प्रभु के शिष्यों पर ठहर जाना और फिर उन्हें पवित्र आत्मा की सामर्थ्य प्राप्त, को न तो यहाँ पर और न ही कभी कहीं अन्य किसी स्थान पर “पवित्र आत्मा की आग से बपतिस्मा” कहा गया। जब कि यदि पवित्र आत्मा से बपतिस्मा पाना और आग से बपतिस्मा पाना एक ही होते, तो यह सबसे उपयुक्त अवसर एवं घटना होती इस बात को दिखाने और प्रमाणित करने के लिए; क्योंकि पवित्र आत्मा आग के समान उन लोगों के ऊपर आकर ठहरा था और फिर वे सब लोग पवित्र आत्मा से भर गए थे। किन्तु वचन में इस घटना को यह दिखाने के लिए प्रयोग नहीं किया गया है। साथ ही, इसके बाद, न तो कभी बाइबल में, और न ही कभी मसीही विश्वासियों के जीवनों में, या अथवा इसके समान घटना फिर कभी घटित हुई है; उनके जीवनों में भी नहीं जो इस आयात को आधार बनाकर बड़ा ज़ोर देकर दावा करते हैं कि पवित्र आत्मा का बपतिस्मा और आग से बपतिस्मा एक ही बात हैं।

क्या उद्धार के लिए बपतिस्मा आवश्यक है?

यद्यपि बहुत से लोग बपतिस्मे को उद्धार के लिए अनिवार्य हैं और इस पर बहुत बाल देते हैं, किन्तु बाइबल इस बात के लिए बहुत स्पष्ट है कि उद्धार किसी भी कर्म से नहीं है (इफिसियों 2:5, 8-9), बपतिस्मे से भी नहीं। क्रूस पर पश्चाताप करने वाला डाकू ने कौन सा बपतिस्मा लिया, किन्तु वह स्वर्ग गया। अनेकों लोग जीवन के अंतिम पलों में उद्धार पाते हैं, या विश्वास करने के बाद बपतिस्मा नहीं लेने पाते हैं, क्या वे इसलिए नाश हो जाएंगे क्योंकि पश्चाताप और विश्वास तो किया किन्तु एक रस्म पूरी नहीं की? इस वास्तविकता की बारीकी को समझना आवश्यक है कि उद्धार बपतिस्मे से नहीं है; वरन उद्धार पाए हुओं के लिए बपतिस्मा है। जैसा कि मत्ती 28:19-20 में प्रभु द्वारा दिए गए क्रम से प्रकट है - पहले शिष्य बनाओ; जो शिष्य बने फिर उसे बपतिस्मा दो और उसे प्रभु की बातें सिखाओ। कोई भी बपतिस्मे के द्वारा प्रभु का शिष्य नहीं बनता है, यह न तो कहीं कहा, और न ही कहीं कर के दिखाया गया है; वरन जो पश्चाताप और विश्वास लाने के द्वारा प्रभु का शिष्य बनाता है, उसे ही बपतिस्मा दिया जाता है। प्रभु द्वारा दिए गए इसी क्रम का निर्वाह प्रेरितों 2 अध्याय में, पतरस के पहले प्रचार में भी हुआ है, पहले लोगों ने पापों का अंगीकार और पश्चाताप किया, और फिर जिन्होंने प्रभु यीशु मसीह पर विश्वास किया और उसे उद्धारकर्ता ग्रहण किया, उन्हें बपतिस्मा दिया गया; और यही क्रम सारे नए नियम में दोहराया गया है। इससे यह भी स्पष्ट है कि बपतिस्मा बच्चों या शिशुओं के लिए नहीं है, केवल उनके लिए है जिन्होंने प्रभु यीशु को उद्धारकर्ता स्वीकार किया और उसके शिष्य हो गए हैं।

यहाँ पर अकसर प्रेरितों 2:38 का गलत प्रयोग यह कहकर किया जाता है कि इस पद में लिखा है “तुम में से हर एक अपने अपने पापों की क्षमा के लिये यीशु मसीह के नाम से बपतिस्मा ले” अर्थात पापों की क्षमा बपतिस्मे के द्वारा है। किन्तु यह इस वाक्य की गलत समझ है; यहाँ यह अर्थ नहीं है कि पापों की क्षमा प्राप्त करने के लिए बपतिस्मा ले - अन्यथा क्रूस पर पश्चाताप करने वाले डाकू को पापों के क्षमा नहीं मिली। वरन प्रेरितों 2:38 के इस वाक्य का सही अर्थ है कि “अपने पापों की क्षमा प्राप्त कर लेने की बपतिस्मे के द्वारा साक्षी दो”। इस वाक्य में लिखे गए शब्दों के क्रम के कारण इसका अर्थ भिन्न प्रतीत होता है, किन्तु है नहीं। इसे एक उदाहरण से समझते हैं; डॉक्टर बहुधा सफेद कोट पहने और साथ में स्टेथोस्कोप रखते हैं। मान लीजिए डॉक्टरी की पढ़ाई पूरी कर लेने के पश्चात, उन्हें डॉक्टरी की डिग्री देते समय यदि उनसे, प्रेरितों 2:38 के उपरोक्त वाक्य के समान एक वाक्य द्वारा यह कहा जाए, “तुम में से हर एक अपने प्रशिक्षण के लिए सफेद कोट और स्टेथोस्कोप ले” तो क्या इसका यह अर्थ है कि सफेद कोट और स्टेथोस्कोप रखने से वे डॉक्टर हो जाएंगे; या यह कि अब जब तुम डॉक्टर हो गए हो, डॉक्टरी का प्रशिक्षण प्राप्त कर लिया है, तो उसका प्रत्यक्ष चिह्न, सफेद कोट और स्टेथोस्कोप साथ रखो? उस गलत शिक्षा और धारणा से बाहर निकाल कर जब व्यावहारिक जीवन की सामान्य सोच एवं अर्थ के साथ उस वाक्य को देखते हैं तो उसका वह अर्थ प्रकट हो जाता है जो लगभग दो हज़ार वर्ष पूर्व पतरस द्वारा इस वाक्य को कहे जाने पर लोगों ने समझा था। उद्धार बपतिस्मे से नहीं है; उद्धार पाए हुओं के लिए बपतिस्मा है। प्रेरितों 2:38 को और विस्तार से देखने तथा समझने के लिए आप इन लिंक्स का भी प्रयोग कर सकते हैं: “क्या प्रेरितों 2:38 सिखाता है कि उद्धार के लिए बपतिस्मा आवश्यक है?”

यदि आप मसीही विश्वासी हैं तो यह आपके लिए अनिवार्य है कि आप परमेश्वर पवित्र आत्मा के विषय वचन में दी गई शिक्षाओं को गंभीरता से सीखें, समझें और उनका पालन करें; और सत्य को जान तथा समझ कर ही उचित और उपयुक्त व्यवहार करें, सही शिक्षाओं का प्रचार करें। किसी के भी द्वारा प्रभु, परमेश्वर, पवित्र आत्मा के नाम से प्रचार की गई हर बात को 1 थिस्सलुनीकियों 5:21 तथा प्रेरितों 17:11 के अनुसार जाँच-परख कर, यह स्थापित कर लेने के बाद कि उस शिक्षा का प्रभु यीशु द्वारा सुसमाचारों में प्रचार किया गया है; प्रेरितों के काम में प्रभु के उस प्रचार का निर्वाह किया गया है; और पत्रियों में उस प्रचार तथा कार्य के विषय शिक्षा दी गई है, तब ही उसे स्वीकार करें तथा उसका पालन करें, उसे औरों को सिखाएं या बताएं। आपको अपनी हर बात का हिसाब प्रभु को देना होगा (मत्ती 12:36-37)। जब वचन आपके हाथ में है, वचन को सिखाने के लिए पवित्र आत्मा आपके साथ है, तो फिर बिना जाँचे और परखे गलत शिक्षाओं में फँस जाने, तथा मनुष्यों और उनके समुदायों और उनकी गलत शिक्षाओं को आदर देते रहने के लिए, उन गलत शिक्षाओं में बने रहने के लिए क्या आप प्रभु परमेश्वर को कोई उत्तर दे सकेंगे?

यदि आपने प्रभु की शिष्यता को अभी तक स्वीकार नहीं किया है, तो अपने अनन्त जीवन और स्वर्गीय आशीषों को सुनिश्चित करने के लिए अभी प्रभु यीशु के पक्ष में अपना निर्णय कर लीजिए। जहाँ प्रभु की आज्ञाकारिता है, उसके वचन की बातों का आदर और पालन है, वहाँ प्रभु की आशीष और सुरक्षा भी है। प्रभु यीशु से अपने पापों के लिए क्षमा माँगकर, स्वेच्छा से तथा सच्चे मन से अपने आप को उसकी अधीनता में समर्पित कर दीजिए - उद्धार और स्वर्गीय जीवन का यही एकमात्र मार्ग है। आपको स्वेच्छा और सच्चे मन से प्रभु यीशु मसीह से केवल एक छोटी प्रार्थना करनी है, और साथ ही अपना जीवन उसे पूर्णतः समर्पित करना है। आप यह प्रार्थना और समर्पण कुछ इस प्रकार से भी कर सकते हैं, “प्रभु यीशु मैं आपका धन्यवाद करता हूँ कि आपने मेरे पापों की क्षमा और समाधान के लिए उन पापों को अपने ऊपर लिया, उनके कारण मेरे स्थान पर क्रूस की मृत्यु सही, गाड़े गए, और मेरे उद्धार के लिए आप तीसरे दिन जी भी उठे, और आज जीवित प्रभु परमेश्वर हैं। कृपया मेरे पापों को क्षमा करें, मुझे अपनी शरण में लें, और मुझे अपना शिष्य बना लें। मैं अपना जीवन आप के हाथों में समर्पित करता हूँ।” सच्चे और समर्पित मन से की गई आपकी एक प्रार्थना आपके वर्तमान तथा भविष्य को, इस लोक के और परलोक के जीवन को, अनन्तकाल के लिए स्वर्गीय एवं आशीषित बना देगी।

English Translation

Understanding Baptism - (2) – Baptism with Water & Fire; Salvation & Baptism

From the last article we have started looking at the meaning of “baptism” and its related things. The people preaching and teaching wrong things about the Holy Spirit, emphasize a lot on “baptism of the Holy Spirit” for an effective Christian Ministry. In this context we have seen the meaning of the word “baptism”, and seen how, according to the teachings of the Bible, there is only one baptism - with water, by immersion. Before going on to study what the Bible teaches about “baptism of the Holy Spirit”, let us look into and clarify two more related things, which will later help us to understand the topic better.

Baptism with Water and Fire

The statement made by John in Matthew 3:11 “... He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire” is also often misunderstood and misinterpreted. Wrong teachings and doctrines are stated using this statement to say that the “baptism of the Holy Spirit” is the same as “baptism with fire.” But the sentence is clear in itself; John is not saying, “He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit i.e., with fire;” rather, what John has said is that “He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire” - that is to say the Lord has two things, the Holy Spirit and fire, to baptize with. Those who have accepted the Lord Jesus and come into faith in Him as their savior, i.e., have been saved, they immediately receive the Holy Spirit at the moment of their salvation, which is the same as being baptized with the Holy Spirit (As we will see in subsequent articles). But those who do not believe in the Lord Jesus, do not accept Him as their savior, have not been saved, will eventually be cast into or immersed in the lake of fire, into hell - for the unsaved, the unbelievers, the Lord has a baptism with fire, of being cast into the unquenchable fire of hell for eternity (Revelation 19:20; 20:10, 14-15). Therefore, every person will receive one baptism or the other from the Lord; either with the Holy Spirit on being saved, or in hell fire if remains unsaved till death.

Consider another verse regarding “baptism with fire”; it is written in Acts 2:3, “Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them.” But this incidence, of an appearance of ‘tongues of fire’ coming upon the disciples and their receiving the power of the Holy Spirit, neither here nor at any other place has ever been referred to or stated as “baptism of the Holy Spirit with fire.” Whereas, if baptism of the Holy Spirit and baptism with fire were one and the same thing, then this was the most appropriate time and incidence to say and affirm it, since the Holy Spirit had come to be upon the disciples and they were filled with the power of the Holy Spirit. But nowhere has this incidence ever been used to say anything like what it is often misinterpreted as. Also, subsequently, neither in the Bible, nor in the lives of the Christian Believers, anything similar has ever happened; not even in the lives and experiences of those who so vehemently claim that baptism of the Holy Spirit and with fire are the same, and use this verse in support of their notion.

Is Baptism necessary for Salvation?

Although many people very resolutely stress upon baptism being a condition for salvation, but the Bible is very clear about the fundamental fact that salvation is not by any kind of works (Ephesians 2:5-8), not even by baptism. The thief who repented on the Cross, was never baptized, but he went to heaven. There are many people who repent and receive salvation towards the end of their lives, and are unable to be baptized at that time; similarly, many people who believe in the Lord Jesus do not have the opportunity or situations and conditions to receive baptism. Will they be sent to eternal destruction despite having truly repented of their sins and believed in the Lord Jesus, just because they could not fulfill one ritual? It is essential to understand the fine-points about this, that salvation is not through baptism; rather, baptism is for those who have been saved. As is apparent from the sequence given in the Great Commission by the Lord Jesus before His ascension to heaven, in Matthew 28:19-20, the first thing the Lord’s disciples were to do is to make other disciples; then, those who had become disciples, they were to be baptized and taught the teachings of the Lord. No one has ever been made a disciple by being baptized - this has never been preached or practiced; but those who became disciples of the Lord through repentance of sins and accepting the Lord as savior, they were baptized. The sequence set by the Lord Jesus was followed in Acts chapter 2, at the time of the first preaching of Peter; first the people confessed and repented of their sins, and then, those who had accepted the Lord Jesus as their savior were baptized; and this sequence has always been followed throughout the New Testament. This also makes it very clear that children and infants cannot be baptized, since baptism is only for those who have voluntarily repented of their sins, became the disciples of the Lord Jesus, and willingly come forward to be baptized.

Here, very often Acts 2:38 is misused and misinterpreted by saying that it is written in this verse that “... let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins …”, therefore forgiveness of sins is through baptism. But this is a misinterpretation of this sentence; this sentence here is not meant to say that baptism is to be taken to receive the forgiveness of sins - else, the thief who repented on the Cross did not receive forgiveness. Rather, the correct understanding and meaning of this sentence from Acts 2:38 is that “witness your having received forgiveness of sins by getting baptized.” Because of the construction of the sentence and the sequence of the words used in it, it seems to imply differently. Understand this through an example: Doctors usually wear a white coat and carry a stethoscope. Now, having completed their medical studies, cleared their qualifying exams, at the time of being conferred their medical degrees, supposing it is said to them, in line with what is written in Acts 2:38, “each of you for being a doctor wear a white coat and carry a stethoscope”, then is this supposed to mean that they become doctors only because of wearing a white coat and carrying a stethoscope? Or, is it meant to say that “now that you have completed your studies and qualified to be a doctor, therefore, witness for your accomplishment through wearing a white coat and carrying a stethoscope”? When we come out of the confines of the wrong teachings and false notions, and start to consider Acts 2:38 from the perspective of general thinking and practical application, then its meaning becomes apparent, the meaning which about two thousand years ago those initial audience would have readily understood when Peter first spoke this sentence to them. Salvation is not through baptism; but baptism is for those who have been saved. To understand Acts 2:38 better you can look at a detailed exposition through this link: “Does Acts 2:38 Teach that baptism is necessary for salvation?”

If you are a Christian Believer, then it is mandatory for you to learn the teachings related to the Holy Spirit from the Word of God, seriously ponder over them, understand them, and obey them. You should learn the truth and accordingly live and behave appropriately and worthily, and should teach only the truth from the Bible. You will have to give an account of everything you say to the Lord Jesus (Matthew 12:36-37). When you have God’s Word in your hand, and the Holy Spirit is there with you to teach you, then how will you be able to answer for yourself for getting deceived by wrong doctrines and false preaching and teachings? How will you justify your giving credibility to the persons, sects, and denominations teaching and preaching wrong things in the name of the Holy Spirit, and being part of their false teachings?

If you are still thinking of yourself as being a Christian, because of being born in a particular family and having fulfilled the religious rites and rituals prescribed under your religion or denomination since your childhood, then you too need to come out of your misunderstanding of Biblical facts and start understanding and living according to what the Word of God says, instead of what any denominational creed says or teaches. Make the necessary corrections in your life now while you have the time and opportunity; lest by the time you realize your mistake, it is too late to do anything about it.

If you are still not Born Again, have not obtained salvation, or have not asked the Lord Jesus for forgiveness for your sins, then you have the opportunity to do so right now. A short prayer said voluntarily with a sincere heart, with heartfelt repentance for your sins, and a fully submissive attitude, “Lord Jesus, I confess that I have disobeyed You, and have knowingly or unknowingly, in mind, in thought, in attitude, and in deeds, committed sins. I believe that you have fully borne the punishment of my sins by your sacrifice on the cross, and have paid the full price of those sins for all eternity. Please forgive my sins, change my heart and mind towards you, and make me your disciple, take me with you." God longs for your company and wants to see you blessed, but to make this possible, is your personal decision. Will you not say this prayer now, while you have the time and opportunity to do so - the decision is yours.

बपतिस्मा - अर्थ तथा संबंधित बातें - 1

पिछले लेखों में हमने परमेश्वर के वचन बाइबल से मसीही विश्वासी के जीवन और सेवकाई में परमेश्वर पवित्र आत्मा की भूमिका, कार्य, और कार्यविधि को देखा है। हमने उन विभिन्न प्रमाणों को भी देखा है जो बाइबल के अनुसार मसीही विश्वासी में पवित्र आत्मा की उपस्थिति और कार्य को दिखाते हैं। हमने यह भी देखा मसीही सेवकाई में परमेश्वर पवित्र आत्मा की भूमिका और सामर्थ्य के संबंध में भ्रामक, अनुचित, और बाइबल के बाहर की तथा बाइबल की शिक्षाओं से भिन्न बातों की गलत शिक्षाओं को देने वाले लोगों की बातों, धारणाओं, और सिद्धांतों में बाइबल की बातों से कितनी अधिक भिन्नता है। किन्तु ये लोग फिर भी अपनी गलत शिक्षाओं का बहुत ज़ोर देकर प्रचार और प्रसार करते रहते हैं। उनकी ऐसी ही एक और गलत शिक्षा की बात जिस पर वो बहुत जोर देते हैं, उसका बहुत उत्तेजना के साथ प्रचार करते हैं, पवित्र आत्मा का बपतिस्मा है। उनका कहना रहता है कि उद्धार प्राप्त कर लेने के बाद मसीही विश्वासी को पवित्र आत्मा पाने के लिए प्रतीक्षा और प्रार्थना करने पड़ती है; और फिर पवित्र आत्मा प्राप्त कर लेने के बाद, प्रभु की सेवकाई के लिए उचित सामर्थ्य एक अन्य अनुभव, पवित्र आत्मा का बपतिस्मा प्राप्त करने से ही मिल सकती है। इसलिए जो भी प्रभु के लिए उपयोगी होना चाहता है, उसे यह पवित्र आत्मा का बपतिस्मा प्राप्त करने के लिए लालसा और प्रयास करने चाहिए। इन लोगों की अधिकांश अन्य शिक्षाओं एवं धारणाओं के समान, इनकी इस शिक्षा का भी बाइबल से कोई आधार अथवा समर्थन नहीं है। यह केवल कुछ पदों को उनकी बनाई धारणा के अनुसार अर्थ देने और दुरुपयोग करने के द्वारा कही जाने वाली बात है, और परमेश्वर के वचन से जिसका विश्लेषण करने पर उसकी वास्तविकता और खोखलापन सामने आ जाता है। किन्तु बाइबल “पवित्र आत्मा का बपतिस्मा” के बारे में क्या कहती है, उसे जानने और समझने से पहले यह जानना और समझना आवश्यक है कि बपतिस्मा और उससे संबंधित बातें क्या हैं। आज से हम इन्हीं का अध्ययन आरंभ करेंगे, और कुछ मूल बातों को समझने के बाद फिर “पवित्र आत्मा का बपतिस्मा” पर आएँगे।

बपतिस्मा शब्द का अर्थ :

बपतिस्मा शब्द, यूनानी भाषा के शब्द “बैपटिज़ो (Baptizo)” से आया है; नए नियम की पुस्तकें मूल में यूनानी भाषा में लिखी गई थीं। मूल यूनानी भाषा में इस शब्द का अर्थ होता है “डुबो देना” या “अंदर कर देना”, या “अंदर-बाहर से पूर्णतः भिगो देना”। दैनिक बातों में इस यूनानी भाषा के शब्द का प्रयोग किसी तरल पदार्थ, जैसे कि पानी, में से उसका कुछ भाग निकालने, या उस पदार्थ में किसी वस्तु को डुबो/पूर्णतः भिगो देने के लिए किया जाता है। जैसे यदि हम आज अपनी हिन्दी भाषा के संदर्भ में से कहें, तो कुएं में से बाल्टी भरकर पानी निकालने के लिए कहा जाएगा “बाल्टी को कुएं में बैपटिज़ो करके भर लो”।

हमारी वर्तमान चर्चा के संदर्भ में, “बैपटिज़ो” के इस शब्दार्थ के आधार पर, प्रभु यीशु द्वारा यह कहने कि “क्योंकि यूहन्ना ने तो पानी में बपतिस्मा दिया है परन्तु थोड़े दिनों के बाद तुम पवित्रात्मा से बपतिस्मा पाओगे” (प्रेरितों 1:5) में यूहन्ना के पानी में बपतिस्मा देने का अभिप्राय हुआ, पानी में डुबो कर बपतिस्मा देना। प्रभु जब यहाँ शिष्यों से कह रहा है कि “थोड़े दिनों में तुम पवित्र आत्मा से बपतिस्मा पाओगे” तो इससे प्रभु की कही बात की यही समझ आती है कि “थोड़े दिनों में तुम पवित्र आत्मा में डुबो दिए जाओगे; या पवित्र आत्मा तुम्हें अंदर-बाहर पूर्णतः भिगो देगा, अपने में समो लेगा।”

यद्यपि बाइबल में कहीं पर भी “बपतिस्मा देने” की क्रिया को दिखाने के लिए पानी में “डुबो देना” अनुवाद नहीं किया गया है, किन्तु जहाँ भी बपतिस्मा देने का उल्लेख आया है, वहीं पर साथ ही संकेत पानी में डुबोने का भी आया है। साथ ही, बाइबल में कहीं पर भी पानी के छिड़कने के द्वारा बपतिस्मा देने, या बच्चों को बपतिस्मा देने का उल्लेख अथवा उदाहरण नहीं है। बपतिस्मा हमेशा ही वयस्कों को, उनके द्वारा अपने पापों से पश्चाताप करने के बाद स्वेच्छा से उसे लेने के लिए आगे आने पर ही दिया गया है। पानी में बपतिस्मा दिए जाने से संबंधित बाइबल के कुछ पदों को देखिए:

मत्ती 3:6 - लोगों ने स्वयं अपने पापों को मानकर, आगे आकर यूहन्ना बपतिस्मा देने वाले से यरदन नदी में बपतिस्मा लिया।
मत्ती 3:16 - प्रभु यीशु पानी में से ऊपर आया।
यूहन्ना 3:23 - यूहन्ना बहुत जल के स्थान पर बपतिस्मा देता था।
प्रेरितों 8:36-39 - खोजे ने जल का स्थान देखा और बपतिस्मा लेने की इच्छा व्यक्त की (पद 36), छिड़काव के लायक पानी तो उसके पास भी होगा, किन्तु डुबोए जाने के योग्य नहीं। पद 38 - खोजा और फिलिप्पुस जल में उतर पड़े; पद 39, वे जल में से निकल कर ऊपर आए।

प्रकट और स्पष्ट है कि सभी स्थानों पर अभिप्राय पानी में जाने और पानी से बाहर आने, तथा अधिक जल के स्थान जैसे कि नदी, या तालाब, या किसी अन्य अंदर उतर कर डुबकी लेने लायक गहरे जलाशय के प्रयोग करने का है। किसी कुएं में से पानी लेकर या छोटे नाले के जल में से कुछ पानी लेकर बपतिस्मा देने का संपूर्ण बाइबल में कहीं कोई उल्लेख नहीं है। अर्थात बपतिस्मा जैसा कि उस यूनानी शब्द का अर्थ है, डुबो कर ही दिया जाता था।

कितने प्रकार के?

इफिसियों 4:5 में लिखा है “एक ही प्रभु है, एक ही विश्वास, एक ही बपतिस्मा”; पवित्र आत्मा की अगुवाई से पौलुस ने बिलकुल स्पष्ट और बल देकर लिखा है कि बपतिस्मा एक ही है। यदि पवित्र आत्मा का बपतिस्मा कोई पृथक अनुभव या क्रिया होती है, तो फिर पवित्र आत्मा द्वारा लिखवाया गया यह वचन झूठा हो जाता है, बाइबल में विरोधाभास या गलती हो जाती है - क्योंकि तब एक बपतिस्मा पानी का हुआ - जो प्रभु यीशु ने भी लिया, और जिसे देने की आज्ञा भी दी (मत्ती 28:19); और पवित्र आत्मा का बपतिस्मा फिर गिनती में दूसरा हुआ। किन्तु बाइबल तो बड़ी दृढ़ता से एक ही बपतिस्मे की बात करती है। अब क्योंकि पानी का बपतिस्मा तो स्थापित है, इसलिए या तो पवित्र आत्मा का बपतिस्मा है ही नहीं; अथवा इफिसियों 4:5 में गलत लिखा गया है; जिसका तात्पर्य हुआ कि पवित्र आत्मा द्वारा लिखवाए गए परमेश्वर के वचन बाइबल में गलतियाँ हैं!

इस संदर्भ में इब्रानियों 6:2 में प्रयुक्त बहुवचन “बपतिस्मों” को लेकर असमंजस नहीं होना चाहिए। इन पदों के संदर्भ को देखिए; इब्रानियों 6:1-3 मसीह की शिक्षाओं के बारे में बात कर रहा है (देखिए इब्रानियों 5:12; इब्रानियों 6:1); और इफिसियों 4:5 तब तथा आज की व्यवहारिक क्रिया, यानि कि बपतिस्मा लिए/दिए जाने की बात कर रहा है। इब्रानियों 6:2 के बहुवचन को 1 कुरिन्थियों 10:2 (मूसा का बपतिस्मा) और रोमियों 6:3 (प्रभु यीशु का बपतिस्मा) के आधार पर देखना और समझना चाहिए - शिक्षा के रूप में, पुराने नियम में बपतिस्मे का एक उदाहरण इस्राएलियों का लाल सागर में जाना और ऊपर बादल द्वारा ढाँपा हुआ होना - उनका जल से ढँके हुए होना था। और नए नियम के उदाहरण, यूहन्ना बपतिस्मा देने वाले के द्वारा दिए जाने वाले बपतिस्मे (मत्ती 3:5-6, 11), जिनमें प्रभु का बपतिस्मा (मत्ती 3:13-16) भी था, और प्रभु के शिष्यों द्वारा दिए गए बपतिस्मे (यूहन्ना 4:2); ये सब भी पानी में ही दिए गए डूब के बपतिस्मे थे - जिन्हें प्रभु ने आगे भी अपने भावी शिष्यों को देते रहने के लिए कहा (मत्ती 28:19), और जिसके लिए रोमियों 6:3 में “मसीह का बपतिस्मा” लिखा गया है। तो शिक्षा के दृष्टिकोण से, पुराने और नए नियम से, एक ही पदार्थ - पानी से ही, किन्तु दो प्रकार से दिए गए डूब के बपतिस्मे हुए - मूसा का बपतिस्मा बादल से ढाँपे और विभाजित समुद्र के जल से घेरे जाने के द्वारा पानी से दिया गया सांकेतिक बपतिस्मा; और नए नियम में यूहन्ना बपतिस्मा देने वाले और प्रभु के तब तथा अब के शिष्यों के द्वारा पानी में दिया जाने वाला डूब का वास्तविक बपतिस्मा। इसलिए बपतिस्मों से संबंधित शिक्षा के दृष्टिकोण से इब्रानियों 6:2 बहु वचन “बपतिस्मों” प्रयोग किया गया।

इफिसियों 4:5 वर्तमान में मसीही विश्वासी के प्रभु की आज्ञा के अनुसार बपतिस्मा लेने के लिए कह रहा है, इसलिए एक वचन है, और नए नियम का एकमात्र बपतिस्मा है।

Understanding Baptism - (1) – Meaning and Types

In the previous articles we have seen from God’s Word the Bible, the role of God the Holy Spirit in the life and ministry of the Christian Believer. We have seen the various Biblical proofs of the presence and working of the Holy Spirit in a Christian Believer’s life and ministry. We have also seen how different the Biblical teachings on this subject are, from the notions the preachers and teachers of wrong doctrines and false teachings about the Holy Spirit keep preaching and teaching so emphatically, and beguiling people into unBiblical things. Another related false teaching and wrong doctrine that these people emphasize upon is the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Their teaching is that after being saved, one has to “tarry” or wait and ask the Lord for the Holy Spirit; and after obtaining the Holy Spirit, the Christian Believer can only be effective in his ministry after receiving the second experience of the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Therefore, whoever wants to be useful and effective for the Lord, he should be desirous of and strive for receiving the baptism of the Holy Spirit. But like most of their other teachings and doctrines, this too has no basis or support from the Bible; rather it is only a false notion built upon a few Biblical statements taken out of their context and contrived meanings and implications being thrust on those statements to make them support their viewpoint. When we examine and evaluate their teachings about this from God’s Word, their false claims and the hollowness of their doctrines becomes evident. But before we get into seeing what the Bible actually says about “Baptism of the Holy Spirit'', it is necessary that we learn and understand from the Bible what “baptism” and its related things mean and stand for. From today we will begin to study about these things, and after learning and understanding some fundamental things, then we will come to the “Baptism of the Holy Spirit.”

Baptism - it’s Meaning:

The word “baptism” is from the Greek Word “Baptizo”; Greek being the original language in which the books of the New Testament were written. The meaning of this word in its original language is “to dip into” or, to “immerse into”, or to “completely wet, from inside and outside, with something.” In day-to-day use, this Greek word is used to dip into some liquid, e.g., water, to fetch out a part of it, or something from inside it, or place something inside it to be covered by it. If we were to say to someone to fetch a bucket of water from the well, it would be said, “baptizo the bucket into the water in the well, fill it, and fetch the water.”

In context of our current discussion, when the Lord Jesus said to His disciples, “for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now” (Acts 1:5), according to the literal meaning of the word “baptizo” He was saying John was by immersing in the water. Therefore, the Lord’s next statement to the disciples “you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now” conveys the meaning, “in a few days, like it was with water, you will be immersed in the Holy Spirit; or the Holy Spirit will completely cover you from inside and outside, fully take you into Himself.”

Although nowhere in the Bible the act of being baptized has been described as immersing into water, but wherever baptizing someone is mentioned, an indication is always there that this was done through immersion. It is also pertinent to note that nowhere in the Bible is there any mention of sprinkling with water for baptizing, or of baptizing children. Every instance of someone being baptized is always of an adult, and that too after the person had repented of his sins and willingly came forward, asking to be baptized. Please read and consider some verses related to being baptized in water:

Matthew 3:6 - people confessed their sins, willingly came forth to John the Baptist to be baptized in the river Jordan.
Matthew 3:16 - the Lord Jesus came up from the water.
John 3:23 - John baptized in a place where there was much water.
Acts 8:36-39 - The Ethiopian eunuch saw a water body and expressed the desire to be baptized (verse 36); he must have been carrying with him enough drinking water for sprinkling, but not enough to be immersed into. In verse 38 - the eunuch and Phillip went into the water; verse 39, they came up out of the water.

It is evident and clear that at all places the implied meaning is of going into and coming out of water, in a place where there is plenty of water, e.g., a river, or pond, or water body deep enough for people to go into and be dipped into the water. There is no mention of taking some water from a well or a small stream, and then sprinkling it to baptize anyone, anywhere in the Bible. In other words, baptism, as it’s Greek word means, was always given by immersion.

How many Baptisms?

It is written in Ephesians 4:5, “one Lord, one faith, one baptism;” under the guidance of the Holy Spirit Paul has very clearly and emphatically written that there is only one baptism. If the baptism of the Holy Spirit is an additional act, another experience, then this statement, that the Holy Spirit got recorded, becomes false, and there is error or contradiction in the Bible! Because, then there is one baptism in the water - which the Lord Jesus took, and also commanded (Matthew 28:19), and numerically, the baptism of the Holy Spirit becomes a second baptism. But the Bible very emphatically speaks of only one baptism. Now, since water baptism is a well-established and accepted Biblical fact, therefore, either there is no second baptism - the so-called baptism of the Holy Spirit, or else, what is written in Ephesians 4:5 is wrong; implying that there are mistakes in the Bible.

In this context, one should not get confused by the plural use of “baptisms'' in Hebrews 6:2. Consider the context of this verse; Hebrews 6:1-3 is about “elementary principles of Christ'', which the readers of the letter were expected to have become familiar with (Hebrews 5:12). Whereas, Ephesians 4:5 is about the practical taking or giving of baptism, as an act. The plural use of “baptisms'', should be understood in light of 1 Corinthians 10:2 (Moses’s baptism), and Romans 6:3 (the baptism of the Lord Jesus), for teaching and learning - in the Old Testament, there is one example of baptism of the Israelites, as they went through the Red Sea, under the cover of the cloud of the Lord’s presence - covered all around by water. In the New Testament, there were other baptisms - one given by John the Baptist (Matthew 3:5-6, 11), and the Lord Jesus also took this baptism (Matthew 3:13-16), and the baptisms being given by the disciples of the Lord Jesus (John 4:2) - these were all immersion baptisms in water, which the Lord Jesus instructed His disciples to administer to the future disciples too (Matthew 28:19), and for which in Romans 6:3 the phrases “baptized into Christ” and “baptized into His death” have been used. So, from the perspective of learning and understanding about baptism, in the Old and New Testaments, using one substance - water, two kinds of immersion baptism have been stated - an implied baptism of Moses - surrounded by water, under cover of the cloud and walking through the divided Red Sea on either side; and an actual immersion baptism practiced by John the Baptist, the disciples of the Lord Jesus, and commanded by the Lord Jesus. Therefore, from this perspective of learning about the “elementary principles”, the use of plural “baptisms'' in Hebrews 6:2 is justified and correct.

Ephesians 4:5 is talking about a Christian Believer taking or administering baptism, to fulfill the commandment of the Lord, hence it is singular, since it is referring to the immersion baptism, the one and only baptism of the New Testament.
