पिछले लेख में हमने “हाथ रखने,” तथा किसी की ओर हाथ बढ़ाने के अर्थ और तात्पर्यों को, बाइबल और सामान्य सामाजिक व्यवहार की बातों से, संक्षेप में दोहराया था। हमने यह भी देखा था कि प्रथम कलीसिया के समय में यहूदी सामान्यतः सँसार के लोगों के बारे में क्या सोचते थे, और उन्हें कैसे श्रेणी-बद्ध करते थे। फिर हमने परमेश्वर से पवित्र आत्मा प्राप्त करने से सम्बन्धित एक सामान्यतः नज़रन्दाज़ की जाने वाली या संभवतः जिसका कभी एहसास ही न होता हो, ऐसी बात के बारे में देखा था; यह कि किसी का पवित्र आत्मा प्राप्त करना इस बात की पुष्टि करता है कि वह व्यक्ति परमेश्वर की सन्तान है, परमेश्वर के परिवार का अँग है, तथा प्रभु यीशु की कभी विभाजित ने हो सकने वाली एकमात्र सार्वभौमिक कलीसिया, उस की दुल्हन, उस की देह का एक भाग है। प्रेरितों काम पुस्तक में से दुरुपयोग किए जाने वाले तीन पदों, प्रेरितों 8:17; 9:17: 19:6, जिन की गलत व्याख्या के आधार पर यह प्रमाणित करने का प्रयास किया जाता है कि पवित्र आत्मा प्रेरितों या कलीसिया के अगुवे द्वारा हाथ रखें से मिलता है, की सही व्याख्या करने और उन्हें ठीक से समझने के लिए उपरोक्त सभी बातों को ध्यान में रखना अनिवार्य है।
अपनी पृथ्वी की सेवकाई के दिनों में, प्रभु यीशु ने अपने जीवन और कार्यों के द्वारा उन का सभी लोगों का ध्यान रखने और देखभाल करना प्रदर्शित किया था, वे चाहे यहूदी हों या कोई और। प्रभु की सेवकाई मुख्यतः यहूदियों के मध्य में थी, किन्तु प्रभु ने अन्यजातियों में भी सेवकाई की, उन्हें चँगा किया और उन के द्वारा प्रभु में रखे गए विश्वास की सराहना भी की (मत्ती 8:5-3; 15:22-28)। प्रभु ने सामरियों के साथ भी संपर्क और वार्तालाप किया, उन्हें चँगा किया, उन के साथ सुसमाचार बाँटा; जो दस कोढ़ी चंगे किए गए थे, उन में से एक सामरी था (लूका 17:12-16), कुएं पर आई एक सामरी स्त्री के माध्यम से प्रभु ने सामरियों के सारे गाँव में सुसमाचार पहुँचाया (यूहन्ना 4 अध्याय), और अपने एक बहुत जाने-माने दृष्टांत में एक सामरी को मुख्य पात्र बनाया (लूका 10:30-37)। प्रभु के आरम्भिक अनुयायी, यूहन्ना बपतिस्मा देने वाले के शिष्य थे (यूहन्ना 1:35-42; मत्ती 4:18-20), और उन के नाम प्रभु के द्वारा चुने गए बारह प्रेरितों में भी थे। अपने स्वर्गारोहण से पहले, शिष्यों को दी गई महान आज्ञा में प्रभु ने शिष्यों से स्पष्ट कहा था कि उन्हें सारे सँसार के सभी लोगों के पास उद्धार का सुसमाचार ले कर जाना है (मत्ती 28:19; मरकुस 16:15; लूका 24:47; प्रेरितों 1:8), बिना किसी भी प्रकार की कोई भी भिन्नता अथवा संकोच करे। इस प्रकार से हम देखते हैं कि प्रभु ने अपने शिष्यों तथा औरों पर यह बिल्कुल स्पष्ट कर दिया था कि उन का दृष्टिकोण उस समय के यहूदियों के सामान्यतः रखे गए दृष्टिकोण और लोगों को श्रेणियों में विभाजित करने की प्रवृत्ति से भिन्न था। प्रभु यीशु ने यहूदियों तथा औरों के मध्य कोई अन्तर नहीं किया, और न ही उसने यूहन्ना बपतिस्मा देने वाले के शिष्यों को अनदेखा किया। किन्तु फिर भी, उस के शिष्यों के मनों में लोगों को श्रेणियों में बाँटने, उन्हें भिन्न देखने की यहूदियों की ऊपर व्यक्त की गई प्रवृत्ति बनी रही।

किन्तु पतरस के किसी अन्यजाति के घर जाने और प्रचार करने से यरूशलेम की कलीसिया के अन्य अगुवों और प्रेरितों को आपत्ति हुई, और उन्होंने पतरस से इस के लिए स्पष्टीकरण मांगा (प्रेरितों 11:1-3)। तब पतरस ने उन्हें सारी घटना बताई (प्रेरितों 11:4-17), और यह स्पष्ट किया कि वह वहाँ पर पवित्र आत्मा के निर्देश से गया था (प्रेरितों 11:12)। सारी घटना सुनने के बाद, यरूशलेम की कलीसिया के प्रेरितों और अगुवों ने अन्यजातियों के उद्धार पाने को स्वीकार किया, और यह मान लिया कि उन का प्रभु यीशु की कलीसिया का अँग बनाया जाना परमेश्वर की योजना का एक भाग था (प्रेरितों 11:18)।
यहाँ पर कुछ बहुत महत्वपूर्ण बातों पर ध्यान कीजिए: आरम्भ में पतरस एक अन्यजाति के घर जाना नहीं चाहता था; पवित्र आत्मा देना तो दूर, वह उन्हें सुसमाचार भी नहीं देना चाहता था; किन्तु अन्ततः, पतरस पवित्र आत्मा के निर्देश पर वहाँ गया। पतरस इस उद्देश्य से कदापि नहीं गया था कि वह किसी तरह से यह सुनिश्चित करे कि उन अन्यजातियों को भी पवित्र आत्मा प्राप्त हो। वहाँ पर पवित्र आत्मा उन अन्य जातियों को, कुरनेलियुस के घराने को, अचानक ही और बिल्कुल अप्रत्याशित रीति से दिया गया। पतरस ने ऐसा होने के लिए कोई प्रार्थना नहीं की, कुछ बात नहीं की, और उन्हें पवित्र आत्मा पाते हुए देख वह भी औरों के समान ही अचंभित हुआ। पतरस ने यह स्वीकार किया कि अन्यजातियों का पवित्र आत्मा प्राप्त करना, परमेश्वर की ओर से दिया गया वरदान था, न कि उस के कुछ करने के द्वारा हुआ कार्य (प्रेरितों 11:16)। परन्तु प्रेरितों 11:17 में पतरस द्वारा कही गई बात “सो जब कि परमेश्वर ने उन्हें भी वही दान दिया, जो हमें प्रभु यीशु मसीह पर विश्वास करने से मिला था; तो मैं कौन था जो परमेश्वर को रोक सकता” पर ध्यान कीजिए। पतरस के अपने शब्दों में, शिष्यों को, जिन में प्रेरित भी थे, तथा अन्यजातियों, दोनों को पवित्र आत्मा प्रभु यीशु पर विश्वास करने से मिला। दूसरे शब्दों में, अन्यजातियों के द्वारा पवित्र आत्मा प्राप्त करना परमेश्वर की ओर से इस बात की पुष्टि थी कि उन्होंने विश्वास किया और उस ने उन्हें अपनी सन्तान स्वीकार कर लिया है, वे अब एकमात्र सार्वभौमिक कलीसिया के, प्रभु यीशु की दुल्हन, उस की देह के अँग हैं। और फिर अन्य प्रेरितों और अगुवों ने भी इस बात को मान लिया, इस की पुष्टि की, और उन्हें स्वीकार कर लिया (प्रेरितों 11:18)। क्योंकि उन्होंने सब के सामने, खुली रीति से पवित्र आत्मा प्राप्त किया था, इस लिए किसी के भी मन में कोई भी सन्देह नहीं रह गया था कि परमेश्वर ने अन्यजातियों को अपने परिवार में स्वीकार कर लिया है, और इस से अन्यजातियों के कलीसिया में स्वीकार किए जाने का मार्ग खुल गया। इस प्रकार अब प्रभु यीशु की कलीसिया में यहूदियों और अन्यजातियों में मेल-मिलाप हो गया, और वे एक हो गए; और इस मेल-मिलाप होने, एक होने में सब के सामने खुले से रूप से पवित्र आत्मा के दिए जाने की बहुत प्रमुख भूमिका थी।
अगले लेख में हम सामरियों के, और फिर अन्य, जैसे कि यूहन्ना बपतिस्मा देने वाले के शिष्यों के कलीसिया में स्वीकार किए जाने के बारे में देखेंगे।
यदि आपने प्रभु की शिष्यता को अभी तक स्वीकार नहीं किया है, तो अपने अनन्त जीवन और स्वर्गीय आशीषों को सुनिश्चित करने के लिए अभी प्रभु यीशु के पक्ष में अपना निर्णय कर लीजिए। जहाँ प्रभु की आज्ञाकारिता है, उसके वचन की बातों का आदर और पालन है, वहाँ प्रभु की आशीष और सुरक्षा भी है। प्रभु यीशु से अपने पापों के लिए क्षमा माँगकर, स्वेच्छा से तथा सच्चे मन से अपने आप को उसकी अधीनता में समर्पित कर दीजिए - उद्धार और स्वर्गीय जीवन का यही एकमात्र मार्ग है। आपको स्वेच्छा और सच्चे मन से प्रभु यीशु मसीह से केवल एक छोटी प्रार्थना करनी है, और साथ ही अपना जीवन उसे पूर्णतः समर्पित करना है। आप यह प्रार्थना और समर्पण कुछ इस प्रकार से भी कर सकते हैं, “प्रभु यीशु, मैं अपने पापों के लिए पश्चातापी हूँ, उनके लिए आप से क्षमा माँगता हूँ। मैं आपका धन्यवाद करता हूँ कि आपने मेरे पापों की क्षमा और समाधान के लिए उन पापों को अपने ऊपर लिया, उनके कारण मेरे स्थान पर क्रूस की मृत्यु सही, गाड़े गए, और मेरे उद्धार के लिए आप तीसरे दिन जी भी उठे, और आज जीवित प्रभु परमेश्वर हैं। कृपया मुझे और मेरे पापों को क्षमा करें, मुझे अपनी शरण में लें, और मुझे अपना शिष्य बना लें। मैं अपना जीवन आप के हाथों में समर्पित करता हूँ।” सच्चे और समर्पित मन से की गई आपकी एक प्रार्थना आपके वर्तमान तथा भविष्य को, इस लोक के और परलोक के जीवन को, अनन्तकाल के लिए स्वर्गीय एवं आशीषित बना देगी।

Laying on of Hands - 10
In the previous article, we recapitulated the meanings and implications of laying on of hands, and extending hands towards someone, from the Biblical as well as social behavioral context. We also looked at the way the Jews at the time of the first Church thought about the people of the world, and categorized them. Then we considered an often ignored or hardly ever realized implication of receiving the Holy Spirit from God, that it affirms the recipient’s being a child of God, a part of His family, and a member of the one universal indivisible Church of the Lord Jesus, a part of Lord’s Bride and Body. All of these are essential for us to keep in mind when analyzing and understanding the three verses from the book of Acts that are misused to support the misinterpretation that the Holy Spirit is given by placing of hands by Apostles or a Church Elder, i.e., Acts 8:17; 9:17; 19:6.
The Lord Jesus, during His ministry on earth, had demonstrated His care and concern for all people, whether Jews, amongst whom He primarily ministered; or, the Gentiles, from whom also He not only healed but also commended some for their faith in Him (Matthew 8:5-13; 15:22-28); or, the Samaritans, whom also He interacted with, healed, and shared the gospel with; e.g., of the group of ten lepers He healed one was a Samaritan (Luke 17:12-16), through the Samaritan woman at the well he shared the gospel to the whole village of the Samaritans (John 4), and used a Samaritan as the primary character in one of His well known parables (Luke 10:30-37); and the followers of John the Baptist, who were amongst the Lord’s initial followers (John 1:35-42; Matthew 4:18-20), and were even named amongst the twelve Apostles chosen by Him. In His Great Commission, before His ascension, He had clearly stated that His disciples were to go all over the world, to every people, with the good news of salvation (Matthew 28:19; Mark 16:15; Luke 24:47; Acts 1:8) without any differentiation or reservation. So, the Lord Jesus had made it very clear to His disciples and others, that His way of looking at people was not the same as the Jews, generally speaking, used to look at and categorized people. The Lord Jesus did not differentiate between the Jews and the others, nor did He ignored the disciples of John the Baptist. But still, this Jewish tendency of differentiating and categorizing the people, that we have seen above, continued to persist in the minds of even His disciples.
Had this continued in the same manner, the Church could never have been the one universal Church, the one Bride and Body of Christ it was meant to be, but would have disintegrated into groups and sects based on ethnic background and geography. The first differentiation that the Lord God removed from the minds of the Apostles and Church Elders was the differentiation between the Jews and Samaritans, we will see about this in the next article. The second differentiation that was removed was between the Jews and the Gentiles, which we will consider today. Please read Acts chapters 10 and 11, to understand this. The happenings of these two chapters, briefly stated, are that the Apostle Peter was shown a vision and sent by God to the home of a devout Gentile Centurion named Cornelius. Peter initially was unwilling, but was convinced by God to go (Acts 10:9-24). Even then, on reaching the house of Cornelius, despite being very honorably received (Acts 10:25-26), Peter stated his reservation about coming to a Gentile’s home quite bluntly (Acts 10:28). But still, he was respectfully received, and given the opportunity to preach the gospel to Cornelieus and his household (Acts 10:30-33). Peter shared about the Lord Jesus with them, and hearing God’s Word those present in the house of Cornelius believed in the Lord Jesus, which was affirmed by their receiving the Holy Spirit, and then Peter commanded them to be baptized (Acts 10:44-48).
But Peter’s going to a Gentile’s house and preaching there upset the other Elders of the Church in Jerusalem, and they asked for an explanation from Peter about it (Acts 11:1-3). Then Peter recounted the whole episode to them (Acts 11:4-17), and made it clear that he had gone there under the instructions of the Holy Spirit (Acts 11:12). On hearing the whole incidence, the Apostles and Elders in Jerusalem accepted the salvation of Gentiles, and acknowledged that their being made a part of the Church of the Lord Jesus was a part of God’s plan (Acts 11:18).
Notice some very important things here: Peter was initially unwilling to go to the house of Cornelius, and let alone giving the Holy Spirit, he did not even want to give them the gospel; but eventually Peter went there under the directions of the Holy Spirit. Peter never went with the intention of making sure that he would ensure that those Gentiles too receive the Holy Spirit. There, the Holy Spirit was given to those Gentiles, the household of Cornelius, quite suddenly and unexpectedly, without Peter’s asking for this to happen, and Peter was as surprised on seeing them receive the Holy Spirit, as was anyone else. Peter acknowledged that the Gentiles receiving the Holy Spirit was not something that he had done but was God’s gift to them (Acts 11:16). But take special note of what Peter says in Acts 11:17 “If therefore God gave them the same gift as He gave us when we believed on the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I that I could withstand God?” In Peter’s own words, the disciples, including the Apostles, and those Gentiles, both received the Holy Spirit when they believed on the Lord Jesus. In other words, the receiving of the Holy Spirit by the Gentiles was an affirmation by God of their believing, and His accepting them as His children, as members of the one universal Church, as part of the Bride and Body of the Lord Jesus. And then the other Apostles and Elders also acknowledged this, affirmed this, accepted them (Acts 11:18). Since they openly and publicly received the Holy Spirit, no one was left in any doubt about God’s accepting the Gentiles into His family, and this opened the way for the Gentiles to be accepted into the Church. So now, the Jews and the Gentiles were reconciled, united, and made one in the Church of the Lord Jesus; and in this reconciliation and unification the receiving of the Holy Spirit openly and publicly by the Gentiles had a major role to play.
In the next article we will see about the acceptance and reconciliation of the Samaritans; and then of the others, i.e., the followers of John the Baptist.
If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord, make your decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now to ensure your eternal life and heavenly blessings. Where there is obedience to the Lord, where there is respect and obedience to His Word, there is also the blessing and protection of the Lord. Repenting of your sins, and asking the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, voluntarily and sincerely, surrendering yourself to Him - is the only way to salvation and heavenly life. You only have to say a short but sincere prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ willingly and with a penitent heart, and at the same time completely commit and submit your life to Him. You can also make this prayer and submission in words something like, “Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sins and repent of them. I thank you for taking my sins upon yourself, paying for them through your life. Because of them you died on the cross in my place, were buried, and you rose again from the grave on the third day for my salvation, and today you are the living Lord God and have freely provided to me the forgiveness, and redemption from my sins, through faith in you. Please forgive my sins, take me under your care, and make me your disciple. I submit my life into your hands." Your one prayer from a sincere and committed heart will make your present and future life, in this world and in the hereafter, heavenly and blessed for eternity.
