प्रभु की मेज़ - परमेश्वर द्वारा दिए गए आदर और विशेष-अधिकारों की यादगारी 

 

हम यूहन्ना 13 से प्रभु द्वारा फसह मनाते हुए, फसह की सामग्री से लेकर प्रभु भोज को स्थापित करने से ठीक पहले हुई बातों और घटनाओं को देख रहे हैं। पिछले लेख में हमने पद 18-19 से देखा था कि प्रभु यीशु के जीवन में परमेश्वर के वचन का पालन करने का क्या स्थान था; और इसी प्रकार से जो लोग प्रभु भोज में भाग लेते हैं उन्हें भी इस बात में प्रभु का अनुसरण करना है। साथ ही, यूहन्ना 13:19 में प्रभु वार्तालाप का ध्यान शिष्यों की भावी गतिविधि की ओर लेकर जाता है। अभी तक, यहाँ पर, यूहन्ना 13 में, प्रभु यीशु की शिष्यों के साथ फसह से संबंधित बातचीत में, शिष्यों की भावी सेवकाई का कोई उल्लेख नहीं हुआ था। किन्तु संभावित भावी घटनाओं के बारे में बात करते हुए, पद 19 में, प्रभु न केवल उन शिष्यों को आश्वस्त करता है कि वे घटनाएं भी उसके दावों की पुष्टि ही करेंगी; साथ ही प्रभु उन्हें उनके ओहदे और आशीषों के लिए भी आश्वस्त करता है। प्रभु जानता था कि उन्हें आने वाले दिनों में इन बातों का सदा ध्यान रखने की आवश्यकता पड़ेगी, जब वे सुसमाचार प्रचार के लिए संसार में निकलेंगे।

यहाँ, यूहन्ना 13:20 में, प्रभु शिष्यों से कोई नई बात नहीं कह रहा है। वह उन्हें यही बात तब भी कह चुका था जब उसने पहली बार उन्हें सेवकाई के लिए भेजा था (मत्ती 10:40-42)। इसके बाद भी अपनी सेवकाई के दौरान प्रभु ने शिष्यों को उनके ईश्वरीय अधिकार और सहारे की बात बताई थी (मरकुस 9:37; लूका 10:16; यूहन्ना 12:44-45)। अब, उसे पकड़ कर क्रूस पर मारे जाने के लिए ले जाए जाने से पहले, प्रभु फिर से उन्हें इस बात को याद दिला रहा है। इस अनुपम आदर और विशेषाधिकार के बारे में प्रभु द्वारा बारंबार शिष्यों को याद दिलाना, उनके लिए और उनके जीवनों में इन बातों के महत्व का सूचक है; और इस बात का भी कि प्रभु के लिए उनकी सेवकाई में भी इसे याद रखना बहुत आवश्यक तथा महत्वपूर्ण है। उन्हें कभी यह नहीं सोचना चाहिए कि उन्हें एक खतरनाक अभियान पर, बिना किसी अधिकार और सामर्थ्य के भेज दिया गया। वरन उनके पास तो सर्वाधिक सामर्थ्य और सृष्टि की सर्वोच्च सहायता और अधिकार है - स्वयं परमेश्वर से। इसलिए प्रभु यीशु मसीह के शिष्य, परमेश्वर के लोग होकर जीने के लिए उन्हें कभी भी मनुष्यों से डरने और मनुष्यों के बनाए हुए नियमों के अधीन होने की कोई आवश्यकता नहीं है। किन्तु हमेशा ही कोई भी विशेषाधिकार और ओहदा, और सामर्थ्य बिना उससे जुड़ी हुई जिम्मेदारियों के नहीं मिलते हैं; साथ ही उन जिम्मेदारियों को भी लेना और निभाना पड़ता है। अपनी पृथ्वी की सेवकाई के आरंभिक समय में ही, अपने पहाड़ी उपदेश में, प्रभु ने अपने शिष्यों के सामने यह स्पष्ट कर दिया था कि उनसे क्या आशा रखी गई है। उन बातों में से एक थी कि उन्हें “पृथ्वी के नमक” तथा “जगत की ज्योति” के समान जीना है जिससे लोग उनके स्वर्गीय पिता की महिमा करें (मत्ती 5:13-16)।

पौलुस प्रेरित ने, पवित्र आत्मा में होकर मसीही विश्वासियों को याद दिलाया कि वह तथा सभी विश्वासी “मसीह के राजदूत” हैं (2 कुरिन्थियों 5:20), और उन्हें प्रभु परमेश्वर की ओर से संसार के लोगों से प्रभु के लिए बोलना है। प्रेरित यूहन्ना ने लिखा “सो कोई यह कहता है, कि मैं उस में बना रहता हूं, उसे चाहिए कि आप भी वैसा ही चले जैसा वह चलता था” (1 यूहन्ना 2:6)। प्रेरित पतरस ने अपने पाठकों को याद दिलाया कि परमेश्वर ने उन्हें कितना उच्च ओहदा और आदर प्रदान किया है “पर तुम एक चुना हुआ वंश, और राज-पदधारी याजकों का समाज, और पवित्र लोग, और परमेश्वर की निज प्रजा हो, इसलिये कि जिसने तुम्हें अन्धकार में से अपनी अद्भुत ज्योति में बुलाया है, उसके गुण प्रगट करो” (1 पतरस 2:9); वे इसे हल्के में नहीं ले सकते थे, उनकी जिम्मेदारी थी कि “...जिसने तुम्हें अन्धकार में से अपनी अद्भुत ज्योति में बुलाया है, उसके गुण प्रगट करो”। जैसा पतरस ने यहाँ पर कहा है और यूहन्ना ने प्रकाशितवाक्य 1:6 में कहा, प्रत्येक नया जन्म पाया हुआ मसीही विश्वासी, अर्थात प्रभु यीशु मसीह का प्रत्येक शिष्य, परमेश्वर की दृष्टि में, परमेश्वर के लिए याजक है। परमेश्वर के संदेशवाहक होने के नाते, उसके याजक की दो ज़िम्मेदारियाँ होती हैं, “क्योंकि याजक को चाहिये कि वह अपने ओठों से ज्ञान की रक्षा करे, और लोग उसके मुंह से व्यवस्था पूछें, क्योंकि वह सेनाओं के यहोवा का दूत है” (मलाकी 2:7); पहली, उसे “ज्ञान की रक्षा” करनी है; और दूसरी, उसे लोगों को परमेश्वर की व्यवस्था, परमेश्वर के मार्ग सिखाने हैं।

इसलिए प्रभु की मेज़ में भाग लेने की तैयारी करते समय, उसमें सम्मिलित होने वाले प्रत्येक जन को अपनी तथा अपने मसीही जीवन की जाँच इन बातों के लिए कर लेनी चाहिए - प्रभु यीशु का शिष्य होने के नाते, क्या मैं उस ओहदे और विशेषाधिकार को याद रखता हूँ, उसका ध्यान रखता हूँ जो प्रभु परमेश्वर ने मुझे प्रदान किया है? उसके द्वारा प्रदान किए गए इस ओहदे और विशेषाधिकार के साथ जुड़ी हुई जिम्मेदारियों का क्या मैं निर्वाह करता हूँ? क्या मैं मसीह के राजदूत, परमेश्वर के याजक, उच्च ओहदा पाए हुए लोग के समान कार्य कर रहा हूँ जिससे कि मेरे कारण लोग परमेश्वर की महिमा करें?

यदि आप एक मसीही विश्वासी हैं, और प्रभु की मेज़ में भाग लेते रहे हैं, तो कृपया अपने जीवन को जाँच कर देख लें कि आप वास्तव में पापों से छुड़ाए गए हैं तथा आप ने अपना जीवन प्रभु की आज्ञाकारिता में जीने के लिए उस को समर्पित किया है। आपके लिए यह अनिवार्य है कि आप परमेश्वर के वचन की सही शिक्षाओं को जानने के द्वारा एक परिपक्व विश्वासी बनें, तथा सभी शिक्षाओं को वचन की कसौटी पर परखने, और बेरिया के विश्वासियों के समान, लोगों की बातों को पहले वचन से जाँचने और उनकी सत्यता को निश्चित करने के बाद ही उनको स्वीकार करने और मानने वाले बनें (प्रेरितों 17:11; 1 थिस्सलुनीकियों 5:21)। अन्यथा शैतान द्वारा छोड़े हुए झूठे प्रेरित और भविष्यद्वक्ता मसीह के सेवक बन कर (2 कुरिन्थियों 11:13-15) अपनी ठग विद्या और चतुराई से आपको प्रभु के लिए अप्रभावी कर देंगे और आप के मसीही जीवन एवं आशीषों का नाश कर देंगे।

  

यदि आपने प्रभु की शिष्यता को अभी तक स्वीकार नहीं किया है, तो अपने अनन्त जीवन और स्वर्गीय आशीषों को सुनिश्चित करने के लिए अभी प्रभु यीशु के पक्ष में अपना निर्णय कर लीजिए। जहाँ प्रभु की आज्ञाकारिता है, उसके वचन की बातों का आदर और पालन है, वहाँ प्रभु की आशीष और सुरक्षा भी है। प्रभु यीशु से अपने पापों के लिए क्षमा माँगकर, स्वेच्छा से तथा सच्चे मन से अपने आप को उसकी अधीनता में समर्पित कर दीजिए - उद्धार और स्वर्गीय जीवन का यही एकमात्र मार्ग है। आपको स्वेच्छा और सच्चे मन से प्रभु यीशु मसीह से केवल एक छोटी प्रार्थना करनी है, और साथ ही अपना जीवन उसे पूर्णतः समर्पित करना है। आप यह प्रार्थना और समर्पण कुछ इस प्रकार से भी कर सकते हैं, “प्रभु यीशु मैं आपका धन्यवाद करता हूँ कि आपने मेरे पापों की क्षमा और समाधान के लिए उन पापों को अपने ऊपर लिया, उनके कारण मेरे स्थान पर क्रूस की मृत्यु सही, गाड़े गए, और मेरे उद्धार के लिए आप तीसरे दिन जी भी उठे, और आज जीवित प्रभु परमेश्वर हैं। कृपया मेरे पापों को क्षमा करें, मुझे अपनी शरण में लें, और मुझे अपना शिष्य बना लें। मैं अपना जीवन आप के हाथों में समर्पित करता हूँ।” सच्चे और समर्पित मन से की गई आपकी एक प्रार्थना आपके वर्तमान तथा भविष्य को, इस लोक के और परलोक के जीवन को, अनन्तकाल के लिए स्वर्गीय एवं आशीषित बना देगी।

English Translation

The Lord’s Table - A Remembrance for Honoring God Given Status & Privileges  

    

We are seeing the events immediately preceding the Lord’s establishing the Holy Communion from the Passover, using the elements of the Passover, from John 13. In the last article we saw from verses 18-19 the place in Lord Jesus’s life of going by the Word of God; and how the Lord’s Table should remind those partaking in it to emulate the Lord for this characteristic. In John 13:19, the Lord shifts the focus of conversation to something related to the future activities of the disciples. As yet, here in John 13, in the Lord’s conversation with the disciples related to the Passover there had been no allusion to the future ministry of the disciples. But talking of the possible future events, in verse 19, not only does the Lord reassure the disciples that those events will only reaffirm His claims about Himself, but also reassures them of their status and blessings. The Lord knew that they will need to keep them in mind in the days to come, when they step out into the world to preach the gospel.

Here, in John 13:20, the Lord is not saying anything new to the disciples. He had already said the same to them when He sent them out the first time for ministry (Matthew 10:40-42). He had reminded them of this divine authority and backing that they had as His disciples, during His earthly ministry as well (Mark 9:37; Luke 10:16; John 12:44-45). Now, just before His being caught and taken for death by crucifixion, He again reminds them of it. The Lord’s repeatedly reminding the disciples of this unique authority and privilege is an indicator of its importance in their lives, and the necessity of the disciples of the Lord always bearing it in mind, when working for the Lord. They should not think of themselves as being sent on a dangerous mission without any authority or backing; instead, they had the highest possible backing, and they had the authorization to fulfill their mission from the highest possible authority of the universe - God Himself. Therefore, they did not have to fear men or subject themselves to man-made regulations when living as the people of God, the disciples of the Lord Jesus. But privileges, status, and authority always come with responsibilities. Right in the initial stage of His earthly ministry, in His Sermon on the Mount, the Lord had made clear to His disciples, what was expected of them. One of the things they had to do was to serve as “salt of the earth” and “light of the world” so that through them the people of the world would glorify our Heavenly Father (Matthew 5:13-16).

The Apostle Paul, through the Holy Spirit reminds the Christian Believers that he and the Believers, all are “Ambassadors for Christ” (2 Corinthians 5:20), to speak on behalf of the Lord God to the people of the world. The Apostle John wrote “He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked” (1 John 2:6). The Apostle Peter reminded his readers that God had given them a highly exalted status, “But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light” (1Peter 2:9); they could not take it lightly, but in accordance with that status and authority, they had to “...proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.” As Peter has said here, and John says in Revelation 1:6, every Born-Again Christian Believer, i.e., every disciple of the Lord Jesus, in God’s eyes, is a priest for God. A priest, as the messenger of God, has two functions to fulfill “For the lips of a priest should keep knowledge, And people should seek the law from his mouth; For he is the messenger of the Lord of hosts” (Malachi 2:7); firstly he has to “keep knowledge”, i.e., guard or protect knowledge of God and His Word; and secondly, he should teach God’s law, God’s ways to the people.

Therefore, when preparing to partake of the Lord’s Table, every participant should examine himself, his Christian life and living for these things - as a disciple of the Lord Jesus, do I bear in mind the unique privilege and authority given to me by the Lord God? Do I fulfill God’s expectations from me in response to the privilege and authority He has bestowed upon me? Am I serving as God’s ambassador, as His priest, as people to whom He has accorded an exalted status so that they may glorify Him?

If you are a Christian Believer and have been participating in the Lord’s Table, then please examine your life and make sure that you are actually a disciple of the Lord, i.e., are redeemed from your sins, have submitted and surrendered your life to the Lord Jesus to live in obedience to Him and His Word. You should also always, like the Berean Believers, first check and test all teachings that you receive from the Word of God, and only after ascertaining the truth and veracity of the teachings brought to you by men, should you accept and obey them (Acts 17:11; 1 Thessalonians 5:21). If you do not do this, the false apostles and prophets sent by Satan as ministers of Christ (2 Corinthians 11:13-15), will by their trickery, cunningness, and craftiness render you ineffective for the Lord and cause severe damage to your Christian life and your rewards.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord Jesus, then to ensure your eternal life and heavenly rewards, take a decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now. Wherever there is surrender and obedience towards the Lord Jesus, the Lord’s blessings and safety are also there. If you are still not Born Again, have not obtained salvation, or have not asked the Lord Jesus for forgiveness for your sins, then you have the opportunity to do so right now. A short prayer said voluntarily with a sincere heart, with heartfelt repentance for your sins, and a fully submissive attitude, “Lord Jesus, I confess that I have disobeyed You, and have knowingly or unknowingly, in mind, in thought, in attitude, and in deeds, committed sins. I believe that you have fully borne the punishment of my sins by your sacrifice on the cross, and have paid the full price of those sins for all eternity. Please forgive my sins, change my heart and mind towards you, and make me your disciple, take me with you." God longs for your company and wants to see you blessed, but to make this possible, is your personal decision. Will you not say this prayer now, while you have the time and opportunity to do so - the decision is yours.

पिछले लेख में हमने यूहन्ना 13 से देखा था कि प्रभु यीशु ने पहले करके दिखाया और उसके बाद शिष्यों को दीनता और सेवा - यदि आवश्यक हो तो औरों के पाँव भी धोने का पाठ पढ़ाया; अर्थात पहले अपने जीवन में उसे करना उसके बाद किसी से कहना और सिखाना। प्रभु ने इस बात के अंत में कहा, “तुम तो ये बातें जानते हो, और यदि उन पर चलो, तो धन्य हो” (यूहन्ना 13:17)। दूसरे शब्दों में, शिष्य का धन्य होना उसकी परमेश्वर के वचन तथा प्रभु की शिक्षाओं की जानकारी पर निर्भर नहीं है, परंतु प्रभु के उदाहरणों और निर्देशों का पालन करने के द्वारा है। इस बात को बाद में प्रभु के भाई याकूब ने भी अपनी पत्री में कहा तथा इसकी पुष्टि की (याकूब 1:22-25)। जब हम यूहन्ना 13 को पढ़ते हैं, तब यह प्रकट है कि जब प्रभु ने शिष्यों के पाँव धोए, तब उसने यहूदा इस्करियोती के पाँव भी धोए। क्योंकि प्रभु यीशु यहूदा की वास्तविकता को जानते थे, कुछ ही समय के बाद उसे “विनाश का पुत्र” कहकर संबोधित करने वाले थे (यूहन्ना 17:12), इसलिए स्वाभाविक है कि यूहन्ना 13:17 की प्रतिज्ञा यहूदा के लिए नहीं थी। इसीलिए, प्रभु ने उसे तुरन्त ही स्पष्ट भी कर दिया (यूहन्ना 13:18-19)। प्रभु को अंदेशा था कि बाद में जब शिष्य जो कुछ हुआ उस पर विचार और मनन करेंगे, तब अवश्य ही इस बात पर सोचेंगे कि क्या प्रभु को यहूदा की वास्तविकता का पता था अथवा नहीं? और यदि पता था, तो फिर प्रभु ने उसे क्यों चुना और उसे उनके साथ प्रेरित ठहराया (देखिए मरकुस 3:13-19 तथा लूका 6:13)? शैतान इस बात को शिष्यों के मनों में संदेह उत्पन्न करने के लिए प्रयोग कर सकता था कि क्या यीशु वास्तव में प्रभु और परमेश्वर है? यह न केवल उन तत्कालीन शिष्यों के लिए था, वरन उनके लिए भी जो आने वाले दिनों और समयों में उसके शिष्य बनेंगे।

 

प्रभु यीशु ने इस बात को चार बातों को कहने के द्वारा स्पष्ट किया (तीन पद 18 में और एक पद 19 में): पहली, वह सभी शिष्यों के आशीषित होने की बात नहीं कह रहा था। दूसरी, जिन्हें उसने चुना था, वह उन्हें जानता था और उनमें यहूदा का सम्मिलित होना किसी धोखे में आकर या अनजाने में किया गया कार्य नहीं था, किन्तु एक उद्देश्य के साथ किया गया था। तीसरी, यहूदा को पवित्र शास्त्र की बात को पूरा करने के लिए चुना गया था, भजन 41:9 की भविष्यवाणी को पूरा करने के लिए। चौथी, बाद में जब वे शिष्य इन बातों पर विचार और मनन करेंगे, तो ये सभी बातें प्रभु के दावों की पुष्टि करेंगे, कि वो कौन है; उन शिष्यों को आश्वस्त करेंगी कि प्रभु के पीछे चलने का निर्णय करके उन्होंने कुछ गलत नहीं किया। इस प्रकार से प्रभु ने पहले से ही शैतान द्वारा इन बातों और घटनाओं के दुरुपयोग करने और तत्कालीन तथा भावी शिष्यों को बहकाने की संभावना को समाप्त कर दिया।

पवित्र शास्त्र की बातों तथा उसके विषय की गई भविष्यवाणियों को पूरा करना प्रभु यीशु के पृथ्वी के जीवन और सेवकाई का एक बहुत महत्वपूर्ण भाग थे। पृथ्वी पर आते समय प्रभु ने परमेश्वर पिता से कहा था कि वह पवित्र शास्त्र की बातों और परमेश्वर की इच्छा को पूरा करने के लिए आया है (इब्रानियों 10:5-7)। अपने शिष्यों से उसने कहा था कि उसके लिए परमेश्वर की इच्छा को पूरा करना भोजन के समान है (यूहन्ना 4:34)। क्योंकि उसने सबत के दिन चंगा किया था, इसलिए उसका विरोध कर रहे और उसे जान से मार डालना चाह रहे यहूदियों से प्रभु ने कहा कि वह पृथ्वी पर केवल परमेश्वर की इच्छा को पूरा करने के लिए ही आया है (यूहन्ना 5:30; पूरा खंड यूहन्ना 5:17-47 पढ़िए)। उसने क्रूस पर अपने प्राण तब ही त्यागे जब उसने यह सुनिश्चित कर लिया कि जो कुछ उसके बारे में लिखा गया था, वह सभी पूरा हो चुका है (यूहन्ना 19:28-30)। इसीलिए, पौलुस, पवित्र आत्मा के द्वारा, “सुसमाचार” की परिभाषा देते हुए 1 कुरिन्थियों 15:1-4 में, दो बार, बल देकर वाक्यांश “पवित्र शास्त्र के अनुसार” का प्रयोग करता है। प्रभु यीशु के लिए परमेश्वर के वचन के अनुसार जीना और उसे पूरा करना सर्वोच्च प्राथमिकता की बात थी। यही उसके जीवन और सेवकाई का आधार था।

 

यह हम नया जन्म पाए हुए मसीही विश्वासियों, प्रभु यीशु के शिष्यों, के समक्ष अपने जीवनों को जाँचने के लिए एक बहुत महत्वपूर्ण बात को रखता है - हमारे अपने जीवन में परमेश्वर के वचन का क्या स्थान है? हम परमेश्वर के वचन के साथ कितना समय और प्रयास लगाते हैं? हम परमेश्वर के वचन को औरों तक कितना पहुँचाते हैं? लेकिन साथ ही हमें प्रभु द्वारा यूहन्ना 13:7 में कही गई, तथा बाद में याकूब द्वारा दोहराई गई बात का भी ध्यान रखना है - वे नहीं जो परमेश्वर के वचन को जानते हैं, परंतु जो उसका पालन करते, उसका अनुसरण करते हैं, वे ही धन्य हैं। प्रभु की मेज़, प्रभु के जीवन को, तथा विशेषकर क्रूस पर चढ़ाए जाने के लिए पकड़वाए जाने से पहले उनके जीवन की इन अंतिम घटनाओं, निर्देशों, और वार्तालापों को याद करने के दृष्टिकोण से, मसीही जीवन और सेवकाई के बारे में हमें इस बहुत महत्वपूर्ण बात को याद दिलाती है; और परमेश्वर के वचन के हमारे जीवनों में वास्तविक स्थान से संबंधित सभी गलतियों और कमियों को समझने तथा सुधारने का अवसर हमारे सामने रखती है।

English Translation

The Lord’s Table - A Remembrance for Giving Proper Time & Place to God’s Word  

    

In the previous article we had seen from John 13 that the Lord Jesus first demonstrated and then taught His disciples humility and serving others, even washing other’s feet if necessary, i.e., first practiced or demonstrated in His life, and then taught it. The Lord concluded by saying that “If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them” (John 13:17). In other words, it is not the disciple’s knowledge about the Word of God and Lord’s teachings, but obeying the Lord’s examples and instructions that makes him blessed. This was later affirmed by the Lord’s brother James in his Epistle, in James 1:22-25. As we read John 13, it is apparent that when the Lord washed the disciple’s feet, He washed the feet of Judas Iscariot as well. Since the Lord Jesus knew the reality of Judas, whom He addresses as “son of perdition” sometime later (John 17:12), it is obvious that the Lord’s promise of John 13:17 would not be applicable to Judas. Therefore, the Lord immediately clarifies about it (John 13:18-19). He had anticipated that later on as the disciples would think over all that happened, they would wonder whether or not the Lord knew about Judas; and if He did, then why did He allow him to be with them as an Apostle, giving him all the powers and abilities as He did to the others (see Mark 3:13-19 and Luke 6:13). Satan could use this to create doubts in the disciple’s hearts, about Jesus being Lord and God. This would be true not only for those disciples, but also for those who would believe on Him and become His disciples in the days and times to come.

The Lord Jesus clarifies by saying four things (three in verse 18 and one in verse 19): firstly, He was not speaking about all the disciples being blessed. Secondly, He knew the ones He had chosen and Judas’s inclusion with them was not inadvertent or accidental, it was deliberate, it was with a purpose. Thirdly, Judas was chosen to fulfill the Scriptures, the prophecy of Psalm 41:9. Fourthly, later on, as they ponder over these things, the happenings will serve to affirm His claim of being who He said He is; will assure them that they have not made any mistake in following Him. Thereby He nullified the possibilities of Satan misusing these events against Him, to misguide the disciples, those and the future ones.

Fulfilling the Scriptures and the prophecies about Him was an integral and very important part of the Lord’s earthly ministry. At the time of His coming to earth, the Lord had said to God the Father that He had come to earth to fulfill the Scriptures and do the will of God (Hebrews 10:5-7). To His disciples, He had likened His doing God’s will as His food (John 4:34). He said to the Jews opposing Him and wanting to kill Him for healing on a sabbath, that He was on earth to do God’s will (John 5:30; read 5:17-47). He only gave up His Spirit, after making sure that all things written about Him had been fulfilled (John 19:28-30). Therefore, Paul, through the Holy Spirit, in defining what the “Gospel” is, in 1 Corinthians 15:1-4, twice, pointedly, uses the term “according to the Scriptures.” Living by and fulfilling the Word of God was of paramount importance for the Lord Jesus. It was the very basis of His life and ministry.

 

This places before us, the Born-Again Christian Believers, the disciples of the Lord Jesus, a very important point to examine our lives - what place does God’s Word have in our lives? How much time and effort do we spend with God’s Word? How much do we spread the Word of God? But we should also remember what the Lord said in John 13:17, and James affirmed later - not those who hear and know God’s Word, but those who do it, those who obey and follow it - they are blessed. The Lord’s Table, as a remembrance of the life of the Lord and especially the remembrance of the last events and instructions and conversation of the Lord, before His being caught and taken for crucifixion, should make us ponder over this very important aspect of Christian living and ministry, and we should seriously endeavor to correct our deficiencies about the place of the Word of God in our lives.

If you are a Christian Believer and have been participating in the Lord’s Table, then please examine your life and make sure that you are actually a disciple of the Lord, i.e., are redeemed from your sins, have submitted and surrendered your life to the Lord Jesus to live in obedience to Him and His Word. You should also always, like the Berean Believers, first check and test all teachings that you receive from the Word of God, and only after ascertaining the truth and veracity of the teachings brought to you by men, should you accept and obey them (Acts 17:11; 1 Thessalonians 5:21). If you do not do this, the false apostles and prophets sent by Satan as ministers of Christ (2 Corinthians 11:13-15), will by their trickery, cunningness, and craftiness render you ineffective for the Lord and cause severe damage to your Christian life and your rewards.

If you have not yet accepted the discipleship of the Lord Jesus, then to ensure your eternal life and heavenly rewards, take a decision in favor of the Lord Jesus now. Wherever there is surrender and obedience towards the Lord Jesus, the Lord’s blessings and safety are also there. If you are still not Born Again, have not obtained salvation, or have not asked the Lord Jesus for forgiveness for your sins, then you have the opportunity to do so right now. A short prayer said voluntarily with a sincere heart, with heartfelt repentance for your sins, and a fully submissive attitude, “Lord Jesus, I confess that I have disobeyed You, and have knowingly or unknowingly, in mind, in thought, in attitude, and in deeds, committed sins. I believe that you have fully borne the punishment of my sins by your sacrifice on the cross, and have paid the full price of those sins for all eternity. Please forgive my sins, change my heart and mind towards you, and make me your disciple, take me with you." God longs for your company and wants to see you blessed, but to make this possible, is your personal decision. Will you not say this prayer now, while you have the time and opportunity to do so - the decision is yours.

यदि आप एक मसीही विश्वासी हैं, और प्रभु की मेज़ में भाग लेते रहे हैं, तो कृपया अपने जीवन को जाँच कर देख लें कि आप वास्तव में पापों से छुड़ाए गए हैं तथा आप ने अपना जीवन प्रभु की आज्ञाकारिता में जीने के लिए उस को समर्पित किया है। आपके लिए यह अनिवार्य है कि आप परमेश्वर के वचन की सही शिक्षाओं को जानने के द्वारा एक परिपक्व विश्वासी बनें, तथा सभी शिक्षाओं को वचन की कसौटी पर परखने, और बेरिया के विश्वासियों के समान, लोगों की बातों को पहले वचन से जाँचने और उनकी सत्यता को निश्चित करने के बाद ही उनको स्वीकार करने और मानने वाले बनें (प्रेरितों 17:11; 1 थिस्सलुनीकियों 5:21)। अन्यथा शैतान द्वारा छोड़े हुए झूठे प्रेरित और भविष्यद्वक्ता मसीह के सेवक बन कर (2 कुरिन्थियों 11:13-15) अपनी ठग विद्या और चतुराई से आपको प्रभु के लिए अप्रभावी कर देंगे और आप के मसीही जीवन एवं आशीषों का नाश कर देंगे।

The Lord’s Table - A Remembrance for Humility & Service  

   

As has been said in the previous articles, to learn the meaning, teachings, and implications of the Holy Communion from the New Testament, we need to see all the accounts given in the four Gospels, from Matthew 26, Mark 14, Luke 22, and John 13, since different authors have stated different parts of the events. Also, for this study it should be kept in mind, as has been said initially, that the purpose here is not to harmonize the four Gospel accounts and present them chronologically, but to learn from them. So far, we have seen from Matthew 26:17-19, along with the related passages from Mark and Luke, that the disciples ask the Lord about the place to eat the Passover, which they were celebrating together as on spiritual family by faith in the Lord. The Lord sends Peter and John to a specific house, and they prepare to eat the Passover there. After this, Matthew 26:20, Mark 14:20, and Luke 22:14 tell us that in the evening the Lord Jesus reaches the place and sits down with His disciples for the Passover, and then some conversation and events start unfolding.

 

The main narrative of this conversation and events is given in John 13; some Bible commentators are of the opinion that John 13 is about the Lord having a supper at the house of Simon of Bethany before the Passover, and the mentioned conversation and events happened at that time (John 12:1). But others are equally sure that John 13 is the account of the last supper that the Lord had with His disciples, during which He established the Lord’s Table, and was afterwards caught with the help of Judas Iscariot and taken to be crucified. Whichever be true, one thing is for sure - it happened soon before the Lord’s being caught and crucified, and is a part of the final events, during which the Lord’s Table was established. We will learn from the conversation and events of John 13 as happening the same evening when the Lord was eating the Passover, during which He established the Holy Communion, and sometime afterwards, He was caught and taken to be crucified. [For the English readers, another thing to be kept in mind is that though the KJV and NKJV translate John 13:2 as “supper being ended”, but the general consensus amongst the translators is that, as is evident from 13:4, 26, the incidence of the Lord Jesus washing the feet of the disciples happened during the supper; and the appropriate translation is “after the supper was served”, or “during supper”, as the NASB, NIV, HCSB, ESV, EBR, LEB, etc. put it.]

With this in mind, we see a peculiar incidence happening in John 13:4-17 - the Lord Jesus gets up from the supper, takes off His garments, i.e., the outer clothes, girds Himself with a towel, takes a basin of water and washes the feet of the disciples. What prompted Him to do so is not mentioned, nor is this incidence mentioned in any of the other Gospel accounts. Simon Peter protests and does not want to allow the Lord to wash his feet, but the Lord explains to him, and Peter agrees. Then the Lord finally concludes by instructing the disciples to learn from His example, be humble like Him, be ready and willing to “wash each other’s feet”, and assures them that by doing so, they will be blessed (John 13:17). This was the teaching pattern of the Lord Jesus, He first demonstrated through His actions and then taught about it; as Luke says in the opening sentence of the Book of Acts, “The former account I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach” (Acts 1:1). Take note of the sequence of words here, first is “to do” and then comes “to teach”; whereas nowadays, people prefer to “teach” or preach, but hardly ever demonstrate it through their lives. It is very rare to see someone first doing or living by the Lord’s instructions, and then preaching or teaching about them.

This humility and attitude of serving in the promised Messiah had already been prophesied by Isaiah (Isaiah 42:1-4), and Matthew speaks of the fulfilment of this prophecy in the life of the Lord Jesus in Matthew 12:17-21. Later, through the Holy Spirit, in Philippians 2:1-11, the Apostle Paul again affirms it. Throughout the Gospel accounts, and wherever His life is mentioned in God’s Word, we see this attitude of humility and service in the Lord Jesus. The Lord Jesus had established the Holy Communion as a way of His remembrance by His disciples (Luke 22:19; 1 Corinthians 11:24-25); and remembrance of the Lord is to remember for emulation what He did, how he lived and behaved; and to remember His instructions for His disciples to follow them. Even the preparation for the establishing of the Lord’s Table teaches us the virtues we need to have in our lives as people known by the name of the Lord, as the followers of the Lord Jesus. We learn from this section that we, the disciples of the Lord Jesus, need to be those who first practice, and only then preach; humility and service should characterize our lives; and we should be willing and ready to wash the feet of others, as and when it needs to done.
